You may recognize this author, Bette Lee Crosby. I have reviewed several of her other books here, Spare Change and Cupid’s Christmas, and she sent me Cracks in the Sidewalk to review as well.  Bette is quite the story teller but this book is based on a true story (sadly).  She interviewed the Grandmother and she told me that the actions of the son-in-law were not fictionalized.  I know this sort of thing happens across the world every day, but I can’t imagine it happening to someone I know.

Synopsis:

From the Bestselling Author of Spare Change, comes a powerful story that is a heart-wrenching reminder of how fragile relationships can be. Cracks in the Sidewalk is based on a true story.

Claire McDermott is an old lady when the letter arrives and brings news of the grandchildren lost some twenty years ago.  It also brings sorrowful memories of her daughter’s death and the thousands of letters written over those years.  Not one of them ever reached its destination.  But what if one of those letters actually made it through?  Can a single letter change the lives of four people?

Claire is about to find out, and three young adults are about to discover letters are a journey of the hear that can eventually reach their destination.

Review:

I don’t know what it is about Bette’s writing and the stories she tells, but they capture my interest from page 1.  The stories are told with so much emotion that it is hard to not get caught up in the characters and feel like you are sitting there next to them seeing what they are experiencing.  Cracks in the Sidewalk is no different.  The story starts off with Claire, the grandmother, receiving a letter from a grandchild that she has not seen in over 20 years.  The story then reverts back to a two year (or so) time that tells the story of Elizabeth (Liz) and Jeffrey (JT) along with Liz’s parents, Claire and Charles.  This story tugged at all of my emotions from anger to joy to sadness to disgust for JT’s character.  I will say that I was crying during the last chapter or two.

I give this book 5 paws and highly recommend picking it up if you don’t win the copy I am giving away!

Unfortunately, the gorgeous and playful Luka has other plans.

When Phoenix is caught between her physical and her emotional attraction, she becomes the keeper of a deadly secret that will rock the foundations of an ancient civilization living beneath Barinkoff Academy. Phoenix doesn’t realize until it is too late that the closer she gets to both Demitri and Luka the more she is plunging them all into a centuries old feud.

Review:

I will admit that I normally do not delve into paranormal type books (that is where I am throwing this book whether I am right or wrong!) however, this one sounded interesting and I like getting out of my normal genres.  I picked up this book and had a hard time putting it down!  I didn’t know what the night students were…at first I thought vampires but soon realized that wasn’t right.  I don’t want to give anything away so won’t expand on that anymore…but needless to say it was a fascinating plot twist!  Anyway, there are times where I wanted to smack Phoenix around because she was being very bull headed and not thinking about what she was doing, but at other times that spunk is what helped get her out of some jams.  Overall I give this 4 paws up and encourage you to give it a try….hey, register to win a copy of the book below in case you aren’t 100% sure this is the right genre for you.  It is always good to step out of our comfort zone.

EXCERPT

“So you’re warning me away from you?” I was appalled. “Then why are you doing this…guarding me at all? Why the torment? Why watch over me when you know that…that we should be more?” I felt on the verge of tears, which amazed me. How could pain be so sharp in the afterlife? “Answer me, Eran. Why?”

He sighed. “Because it is my job.”

I gasped, more offended than I’d ever been. “I’m a job to you?” I stared at him and waited for his head to rise but he refused to look at me.

“Yes,” he said weakly, defeated. His beautiful, rugged voice released as a whimper and the pain inside me grew. “You are just a job.”

I didn’t think it was possible but the emptiness I’d felt with Eran being gone those many weeks held no comparison to the magnitude of what I was experiencing right now.

I felt as if I had been gutted.

“No…” I shook my head. “I don’t believe you because you see, Eran, I can feel your emotions run through me. Whether you want to admit them or not, I know how you feel about me.”

Stunned, his head jerked up, his brilliant blue-green eyes drilling into mine. “You feel me too? How can that be?”

“I don’t know. But I do know that I feel in you the same emotions I have.”

He groaned and turned away. “That’s not possible…” he muttered, pausing. When he spoke again his voice was strained, determined. I drew in a breath as the intensity of these emotions ran through me. “It doesn’t matter. I won’t let this happen. This will not happen…I will not let us be together.”

“Because you are my guardian? Then let me make it easy on us…You’re fired.”

“It doesn’t work that way, Magdalene,” he said, quieter but still resolute.

“I didn’t want you to watch over me, Eran. I never asked for it.”

As if he’d become an entirely new person, his reply was flat and detached. “You’re a messenger. You require a guardian. It’s as simple as that.”

“Then we’ve just solved the issue, didn’t we?” I said causing him to finally look up. “This will be my last message. It’s from me to you…goodbye Eran.”

Turning swiftly, I walked away just before the tears came.

Heart of the Ocean

by Heather B. Moore

A dark secret . . . a grieving ghost  . . . a handsome stranger  . . .

What more could Eliza Robinson want?

Except for maybe her life.

In Heather B. Moore’s enthralling 1840’s historical romance, Heart of the Ocean, Eliza Robinson has turned down the very pretentious Mr. Thomas Beesley’s marriage proposal. As a business partner of Eliza’s father, Thomas quickly discredits the family and brings disgrace to the Robinson name.

While her father scrambles to restore his good name in New York City, Eliza flees to the remote Puritan town of Maybrook to stay with her Aunt Maeve. Although relieved to be away from all- things-male and unforgiving gossip columns, odd things start to happen to Eliza, and she is plagued by a ghostly voice. Her aunt’s explanation? That Eliza is being haunted by a woman who died of a broken heart twenty years ago.

After Aunt Maeve is tragically killed, Eliza’s life is put in danger as she tries to uncover the mystery of her aunt’s death. She encounters Jonathan Porter in Maybrook, whose presence in the town seems suspicious, yet she finds herself drawn to him. When she discovers that Jonathan’s dark secrets may be the link between the dead woman who haunts her and her aunt’s murderer, Eliza realizes that Jonathan is the one man she should never trust.

eires captive moon blog tour button

Today’s Excerpt is by author Sandi Layne for Eire’s Captive Moon

Having been a voracious reader all her life, Sandi never expected to want to write until the idea was presented in a backhanded manner. Once the notion occurred to her, though, she had to dive in the deep end (as is her wont) and began by writing historical fiction. She has since written more than twenty novels—most of which will never see the light of day.

Sandi has degrees in English and Ministry, has studied theology, spent years as an educator, has worked in escrow and sundry other careers, but research is her passion. She won an award for Celtic Fiction in 2003, but as well as history, she is also fascinated with contemporary research and has self-published several novels in the Inspirational Romance genre.

She has been married for twenty years to a man tolerant enough to let her go giddy when she discovers new words in Old Norse. Her two sons find her amusing and have enjoyed listening to her read aloud—especially when she uses funny voices. A woman of deep faith, she still finds a great deal to laugh at in the small moments of the everyday and hopes that she can help others find these moments, too.

Synopsis:

Éire’s Captive Moon, the first book of Sandi Layne’s Éire’s Viking Trilogy, brings you to the unsettled era of the early Viking raids along the coast of Éire – today’s Ireland.

A wounded refugee from the violent Viking raids on Éire’s coast is healed so well by Charis of Ragor that Agnarr captures the moon-pale woman for his own and takes her home to Nordweg to be his slave.

Also captured is Cowan, a warrior gifted with languages. He is drawn to the healer of Ragor and finds himself helpless before her. In more ways than one!

Through the winter, Charis plans a fitting vengenance upon her captor for the men he killed. She also prepares to return to Éire and the children she left behind.

But will her changing feelings interfere with these plans? When two men vie for her heart, will she give way before either – or both?

Trailer:

Excerpt:

Her men. More tears burned her eyes as she probed the wound, so she stopped for a moment to clear her vision. My men.

Revenge burned inside her and for a moment—just a moment—she considered killing the patient before her and then using the same spear in the young man to pierce her captor.

But no, her men would expect more from her. Charis remembered that, sealed it in clay, and put it deep in her heart. Later. Revenge would come, she promised herself. Later.

“My things!” she called loudly, finally turning to Cowan. Impatience held nausea at bay. “I need them! If I can’t go to my home, the—the Northman can bid farewell to his man.” The prince nodded, and turned to the Northman. He didn’t speak their captor’s language, but he did manage to make himself understood, Charis observed. Good for him. I will never learn that tongue. Never!

Four thick-muscled men surrounded her and one pulled her to her feet once more. Charis steadied her guts and clenched her fists for the walk to her home. It was harder than almost anything she could remember doing.

Moans of the wounded as they died. The grunts and cries of rape. Smoke burned her eyes, smoke from burning mounds of hay and thatched roofs. Blood smeared on faces, arms, bodies, and the discarded garments of the dead and dying. The smells! Stirred earth, spilled innards, and the sharp scent of terror swirled like invisible smoke around her. But Charis tried to bury that. Her home was in front of her and she resolved she was not going to cry again in front of the invaders. Maybe, if she did as they asked, they would let her stay and help—

Help the children. I hope they’re staying hidden! Stay! She tried to push the words in their direction, hoping beyond reason they would know what to do. She kept her gaze from the distant little fire of the old blacksmith’s hut. Stay hidden!

“Charis! Healer, help!”

Muscled arms prevented her from leaving the Northmen and she seethed, hatred for them roiling inside her like old, stewed tea heated anew. Bitter. Strong. She swallowed it down. She had to.

Her home was before her. Sweet, precious memories seemed to flow from the broken door to greet her, taunting her with the love of two men who would never hold her again. Never tease her, pretend to fight over her, or try to coax her from her herbs in the summertime. Never again.

The pain was overwhelming. Swooning, Charis made a concentrated effort and remained upright, blinking back tears. Into her home she went, followed by the four invaders.

“What happened in here?” Charis bit out, her jaws clenched against the choking sorrow.

No response beyond being shoved roughly toward the scattered hearth.

She wanted to spit.
All about her, the tables were overturned, small boxes and packs dumped

clumsily on the floor. Her dishes had been broken, for they’d been of clay and wood and had no value to the despoilers of her rath and home. But there on the shelf, her medicines had been left alone.

She didn’t wonder why, but thought it might have something to do with the linked iron circles her husbands had had made for her, years past. As a wedding gift. She had brought the home to their marriage, so they had made things for the home they would have together, to demonstrate their fidelity. It was the way of the marriage of the first degree, between equals of status or wealth. The most honorable, in her opinion.

She had planned on handing down the circles to her children, but her womb had never quickened.

The children! For the space of a heartbeat, her fingers stilled as they ordered her herbs and surgery elements. Needle. Thread for the wound. Mandragora. Chamomile for once she’d stitched him up. Yarrow—leaves picked fresh yesterday—to fight swelling and fever. The children! She had to protect them. She had brought about Devin’s death by her intemperate behavior; she could not allow that again. Don’t look in their direction! she warned herself as she blankly tucked her medicines into a satchel. Keep their attention on you, not the children. They have to be safe!

This program works (see testimonials below). And this year, we’re giving our new 2013 Fit & Fabulous podcast series FREE to those who sign up with a friend! Both of you receive weekly podcasts and posts on weight loss/energy gain tips and strategies. Jill Holmes, our online marketing director, has lost and kept off 50 POUNDS! She’ll share her personal tips and secrets to make weight loss work for you, even eating chocolate daily.

Here’s what women have said about the 8-week Challenge:

“I have learned so many things about who I am and what I want to do in my life. I have also gained a new sense of happiness. My husband and girls have noticed just in the last week the change in my attitude and they have told me that it is nice to hear me laugh again.” C.Adams

“Thank you so much for giving me the needed push to do something I’ve wanted to do for months & never completed. That has never happened for me with goal setting. THANK YOU!” B.Bird

“If I wouldn’t have been doing the challenge I never would have thought to [accomplish this goal]. I am so glad I did this 8 week challenge! I want to continue these small goals for the rest of my life.” C. Rose
