seduced by innocence banner

Synopsis:

Seduction comes in many forms.

“Liquid fire poured into me, filling me with the intimate sense of him as he leaned in to claim my lips with his own. I reached for him, needing him closer, but my arms couldn’t close the distance between us, which grew wider with each hitched breath. So close to finally feeling something real, something carnal and deep, I cried out in frustration, dropping my hands as he disappeared. My cries deepened into a frenzy of panic and my eyes flew open. I clutched my blanket and stilled myself to calm my racing heart.

Just a dream. Always just a dream.

Rose Wintersong didn’t have an ordinary upbringing. Raised in what most would call a hippy commune, but what is actually a powerful coven of witches, she never questions the life fate chose for her.

Until she meets Derek O’Conner.

Derek challenges everything Rose believes and forces her to see the secrets hidden beneath the whitewashed walls of her idyllic country life.

Rose knows she should walk away, that the sexy martial arts instructor is bad news bred to create discord in her tight community… but the animal magnetism between them is impossible to fight.

Caught between the passion of first love, and the steady beat of the life she’s always known, Rose must choose between the innocence of her youth or the pleasures of womanhood—but lost innocence comes at a price, and Rose harbors a dark secret that could destroy everyone she loves—including Derek.

Submit to the Seduced Saga as Derek and Rose face their future while unraveling the mysteries of their past.

Look for these books in 2013.

Review:

I think I’ve said before that I normally don’t go in for paranormal but lately it seems like I’ve been reading several such stories and enjoying them.  I guess it goes to show that if you give anything a chance you never know, you might just like it.  This story is one of forbidden love, much like Romeo and Juliet but with Druids and Witches.  Rose is a sheltered witch with a dark power that she tries to hide as much as she can.  Derek is a druid that decided he wanted to see the world instead of joining the family business.  They meet by chance in a martial arts study and you could say it was love at first sight…or maybe that is second sight on Derek’s part.  They don’t know that they shouldn’t like each other and of course that is always when the trouble starts!

This is a gripping story but I will say it leaves you hanging….but never fear, the story is continued in the second book, Seduced by Pain that came out this month.   I have to know what happens!  I read this book in a day (it isn’t long anyway) and give it 5 paws.

Baked Alaska by Josi S. Kilpack

An Alaskan cruise is the setting for amateur detective Sadie Hoffmillers latest adventure. Sadie plans to spend time relaxing with her two grown children, Breanna and Shawn, and her boyfriend, Pete, while enjoying the luxury and cuisine of an elegant cruise ship and helping to plan her daughters upcoming wedding. But even as the crew prepares to leave port, Sadie has suspicions about the voyage ahead and the relationship between her normally easygoing son and a mysterious female passenger he obviously knows but refuses to discuss. When the woman is discovered unconscious during the second night at sea, Sadies apprehension escalates. Over the last few years, Sadie has developed an extreme dislike for secrets and it would seem her son is keeping one from her. *Includes eight new mouthwatering recipes, tested and approved by the official bakers of Sadies Virtual Test Kitchen.
Praise for Baked Alaska

Josi Kilpack has done it again. You would think that all these events that occur in Sadie’s life wouldn’t be natural, but Josi Kilpack has a way of making you believe that it just “happens” and it is normal. I have grown to love Sadie’s character, even if she is a busybody, you can’t help but cheer for her as she attempts to solve a mystery or crime. One of my favorite series. 🙂

Synopsis:

After a case ended badly for Rebecca Carson, she’s losing her mind sitting around her apartment waiting on her superiors to allow her to return to work. Since she was a teenager, the only thing she’d ever wanted was to join the FBI. Now that dream was in danger.

Gage Daniels has made a pretty good life for himself. A nice house. A career he loves. As a professional football player, he’s used to getting almost everything he’d ever want with just the snap of his fingers. This includes women. A well-timed smile is usually all it takes to attract the opposite sex, especially in Nashville.

When a stalker threatens Gage, the team owner calls an old friend, Rebecca’s ex-partner Travis Hansen, to help protect his star quarterback and find the person responsible. Hansen offers Rebecca the job, and she jumps at the chance. It’s work, and it will get her out of her apartment. How bad can it be?

Posing as Gage’s girlfriend, however, isn’t as easy as it seems. The man is relentless. Rebecca must work to protect Gage while staving off his advances. She’s there to do a job, nothing more. The last thing she wants is to be another notch on a hotshot athlete’s belt.

As the stalker continues to up the ante, Rebecca finds it harder and harder to keep her distance from Nashville’s star quarterback. He isn’t what she expected in one of the city’s most notorious playboys. Now all she has to do is keep him safe until they can find his stalker, and hope she doesn’t lose her heart in the process.

Review:

I don’t know if I knew that this was the 2nd book in a series, but it is definitely not a book that has to be read after the first book.  Sure there might be something about one of the characters in the first book, but I think it was a minor character and not one essential to the plot.

I found this to be a fun read and I tried to figure out through the whole book who was stalking Gage…trust me when I say it wasn’t anyone that was on my radar!  There is great interplay between Gage and Rebecca and we see her defenses crumble and maybe having a relationship isn’t quite so bad.  It is a fairly quick read and worth the time.  Overall we give it 4 paws.

Praise

“My top pick of 2012 YA… This book is just. plain. fun.”

~Jordan McCollum, author of Saints & Spies and I, Spy

“Sariah Wilson’s new book, The Ugly Stepsister Strikes Back, is hilarious…What follows is a story of fun and romance with some good non-preachy life lessons thrown in.  The voice in the main character, Mattie, makes the whole thing.  I thought it was definitely a book I’d recommend to anyone with teenagers or who just want to read a good teen romance.”

~Julie Coulter Bellon, author of All Fall Down and All’s Fair

“Sariah [Wilson] has written one of the funniest stories I’ve read in such a long, long time. I literally couldn’t put it down. Yes, my poor Kindle’s battery died and I was attached to a short power cord, contorted in a very uncomfortable position while I read to the end…. Sariah Wilson captured the back-biting, insecure, hormone-driven, clique-riddled high school atmosphere so perfectly you’d think she never grew up. I dare you not to laugh as you read this witty and oh, so, romantic story.”

~Debra Erfert of Windows into Writing

“Sariah Wilson writes like the best of/most popular YA teen fiction/teen romance authors – Sarah Dessen, Jennifer Echols, Susanne Collins, Cassandra Clare.  She sucks you in and never lets you go.  I finished the ~194 novel in one night because I just couldn’t go to sleep without knowing the ending!  I hope that Sariah comes out with more novels, I know I’ll be re-reading this one all the time!  She’s extremely talented and needs to be talked about.  I highly recommend The Ugly Stepsister Strikes Back! to anyone (over the age of 12) who wants a YA novel that’s a real modern-day fairy tale.”

~Hilary at Novel d’Tales

“This was such an entertaining story! I shouldn’t have started reading it so late in the evening, because I didn’t want to put it down to go to sleep…This is a book I can see myself reading several times. It’s a fast, clean read with great characters, and I highly recommend it.”

~Andrea of Literary Time Out

The book is wonderful.  It’s quirky and fun.  The story makes you laugh and you fall in love with the characters right from the beginning…This is a well-written book.  It is one that will make you smile and sigh as you remember your first love.  And it has a moral…be yourself, believe in yourself and maybe, just maybe, your fairytale will come true.  Pick up this book.”

~Ana of The Book Hookup

Author Sariah Wilson

Sariah Wilson has never jumped out of an airplane, never climbed Mt. Everest, and is not a former CIA operative. She has, however, been madly, passionately in love with her soulmate and is a fervent believer in happily ever afters—which is why she writes romance. The Ugly Stepsister Strikes Back is her fourth happily ever after novel. She grew up in southern California, graduated from Brigham Young University (go Cougars!) with a semi-useless degree in history, and is the oldest of nine (yes, nine) children. She currently lives with the aforementioned soulmate and their four children in Utah, along with three tiger barb fish, a cat named Tiger, and a recently departed hamster that is buried in the backyard (and has nothing at all to do with tigers).

ONE, my life as I once knew it will never be the same.

TWO, the person I’m in love with might not even exist.

THREE, the deception that has unfolded before me has the power of life and death.

Sixteen year old, Breanna Davis, has heard the saying; life isn’t always what it seems…well, that saying rings true now more than ever. As horrifying visions appear before her, revealing tragedies that will forever change the fate of those she loves, she realizes that she may be the only person who can stop them from becoming reality.

Amongst the chaos of this new discovery, Bre is faced with a stranger, Eve, who moves in on Bre’s friends and begins to follow her every move. As Eve’s true motives begin to surface, Bre must fight against, not only the visions, but the dangers Eve holds close.

 Excerpt:

Walking into the food court, I glanced over at something that caught my eye and abruptly stopped.

“Bre, are you alright? What’s wrong? What are you staring at?” Stephanie paused next to me and looked around the crowded mall. Rebecca and Katie had stopped just ahead of us and turned so they could see what was going on. They stood there staring at me with confusion, not saying anything, just waiting for me to respond. Glancing at Katie, I thought that for the first time in about a year, she actually seemed concerned that something might be wrong with me. I could see the change in her expression as she stared, not knowing what to say. But almost instantaneously, her concern seemed to vanish, and her face dropped into a heavy blankness. She pressed her lips together as she obviously realized who it was that she was concerned about and stopped herself before breaking the silence.

Snapping my eyes back to where the girl was standing, her expression was difficult to read; fury, spitefulness and interest all mixed into one. Her long, straight black hair shimmered from the iridescent lights above. Her skin was a perfect ivory color with a hint of pink to it. Her dark eyes glistened as she focused on my face, not noticing the people around her intruding on her space. She seemed oblivious to everything…but me.

“Bre? Bre?” Rebecca walked up to me and shook my shoulders but I didn’t look at her.

Eyes fixed on Eve, I tried to keep my voice as even as I could, failing miserably. “It’s her,” I whispered. “Why does she keep showing up in my life?  This cannot be coincidence. What does she want from me? Why doesn’t she just leave me alone?”

“Who are you talking about? Who keeps showing up in your life?”

Quickly taking my eyes off of her for a second, I glared into Becka’s perplexed face. I pointed my finger toward Eve, like I was pointing at the Ghost of Christmas Future.

All three girls turned around at the same time to look. When Rebecca saw who I was referring to, she flipped back around. “Do you mean Eve?”

The sheer sound of her name sent shock waves throughout my body and I began to shudder when I looked back at Eve.

“How do you know who she is?” I barely got the words out.

“I met her at the park right after you left. She seems really nice. She told me she had just moved here from…well, everywhere I guess. She really never told me where she came from, just that she moves around a lot.”

Completely taken off guard, I shook my head. “What else did she say?”

“We just talked casually, small talk like: how long have you lived here, I like what you are wearing that kind of thing. Of course, she would comment on my appearance because I looked fantastic that day. Oh, who am I kidding? I look fantastic every day!”

Why was she hovering around my friends? First my dad and now my best friend. Who was this creepy girl who seemed to be following me? I turned back around and stared at Eve.

“Becka, I know that you said she’s nice but there’s something strange about her. Something is just off, I can feel it,” I stated uneasily.

Just then, as I held Eve’s gaze, warmth swept across my body like I was standing under an air duct and they had turned the heat on. The stiffness of my muscles relaxed and all the uneasiness vanished. Impulsively, my eyes shut and I waited until the light had faded. When I opened them, there it was again, invisible to everyone but me.

threesistersThree Sisters by Helen Smith

Three Sisters and Showstoppers are two novella-length stories in the Emily Castles mystery series. The first full-length novel, Invitation to Die, will be published by Thomas & Mercer in October 2013.

The Emily Castles mystery series is set in present-day London. It features twenty-six-year-old Londoner Emily Castles and her neighbor, eccentric philosophy professor Dr. Muriel Crowther.

In Three Sisters, Emily goes to a party in a big house at the end of her street. She’s sure she witnesses a murder, but no one will believe her. She teams up with Dr. Muriel to investigate.

Review:

This is the first book/story in the new Emily Castles Mystery series.  I was overwhelmed at the beginning of this story with all of the description of the party going on at the neighbor’s house.  It did take me awhile to get into the story but when I did, I found Emily and her neighbors to be a bit quirky.    I did have an idea of who did what but did not know all of the details….just one of those feelings.  It was still a good story and I read the second one as well, Showstoppers, which I liked a little bit better.

Overall I give this 3 1/2 stars

Book Description:

LennonsJinxGW-1Sometimes, we don’t get to choose who we fall for.

Lennon spends most of his time raising his little sister Currie while trying to skate through his senior year of high school. He prefers groupies with no-strings attached but finds himself strangely attracted to Jinx, the straight-A student in his choir. Lennon’s curiosity overrules his good sense as he tries to peel away the layers to discover the reason for Jinx’s skittishness.

Jinx conceals the black truth about herself from her friends. She won’t admit to them that she screwed up big time, losing her first love and what she once held most precious.

When Lennon’s band holds auditions to replace their keyboard player, Jinx comes to tryout and almost leaves after seeing Lennon. Despite the fact she despises him, she joins the band to nurture her love of music that will hopefully ease the guilt gnawing away at her.

Like the rest of his band mates, Jinx soon witnesses Lennon battling his infamous father for the custody of Currie. While confronting his pent-up anger at his dad, Lennon exposes vulnerabilities he had no intention of letting any girl ever see, especially Jinx. Their reckless pasts may bring them together or further complicate their already messy lives.

About the Author

Chris MyersChris Myers suffers from an overactive imagination. In second grade, Sister Bernice produced Chris’s first play about pumpkins mauling and eating children. Apparently, the nuns didn’t catch the underlying meaning. This instantly raised Chris to stardom amongst her peers for the several days off from schoolwork while in production. She spent her high school years writing torch songs for fantasy guys then moved onto writing thrillers and young adult. Chris lives in Colorado with her daughter, her better half, and BeBe, a rambunctious Bichon.

Chris literally has very few photos of herself, even though photography put her through college. Here she is with her sisters and daughter. Chris is the one with the vino.

Chris started out as an art major, then moved to bio-chem, hoping to play Victor Frankenstein as a genetic engineer or messing with people’s minds as a psychiatrist. Just as she was about to graduate, she decided being broke for another four to ten years wouldn’t work out for her adventurous spirit and traveling. She ended up with an electrical engineering degree then a masters. As it turns out, she should’ve finished her first novel twenty-five years ago and stuck in the make-believe world where she is happiest.
