shattered skies

Synopsis:

Torn between the day and the night, Catalina treads a dangerous, deadly trail among the monsters; sex is her weapon. But what happens when her heart takes over and she falls in love with the head monster, the leader of a new breed of Vampire that is chillingly capable of killing her and the humans she loves?

Courageous Catalina never had the chance to live in the normal world we take for granted. Instead she was born into a world ruled by the alien Vampires that have taken over the planet. Half the human race is dead, the survivors have been raped and pillaged, and the alien Vampire invaders have bred a nearly indestructible new race, the Dominus, a horrific genetic mix of human and vampire.
Catalina and her small family of rogue humans have been led by a brooding Doctor since their infancy. So far, they have managed to live secretly among the new deadly breed of monster, killing when they can.
Then Catalina, the black sheep of the family, rejects the subservient female role assigned her, and demands to be a warrior on the front lines with the men, bedding one Dominus after the next, in a world where sex kills. Hell bent on destroying as many of the Dominus as she can, Catalina is drawn to the bed of the King Dominus, Akia. Her emotions flare in his presence and she feels a strange, tumultuous, magnetic pull towards him and him to her, but this star-crossed attraction can only lead to death. But for whom?

I thought I would stray from my normal cozies that I post on Mystery Mondays and share something a little grittier with you!  This is a series about a LA district attorney and this is book .  You might recognize the author, Marcia Clark, as the lead prosecutor in the OJ Simpson trial way back when.

guilt-by-degrees-200

Synopsis:

Someone has been watching D.A. Rachel Knight–someone who’s Rachel’s equal in brains, but with more malicious intentions. It began when a near-impossible case fell into Rachel’s lap, the suspectless homicide of a homeless man. In the face of courthouse backbiting and a gauzy web of clues, Rachel is determined to deliver justice. She’s got back-up: tough-as-nails Detective Bailey Keller. As Rachel and Bailey stir things up, they’re shocked to uncover a connection with the vicious murder of an LAPD cop a year earlier. Something tells Rachel someone knows the truth, someone who’d kill to keep it secret.

From Marcia’s website:

In Marcia Clark’s gripping follow-up to the highly praised national bestseller Guilt by Association, Los Angeles D.A. Rachel Knight finds her life and her career in jeopardy when she becomes the object of a brilliant psychopath’s obsession.

No one tackles the high stakes murder cases more fearlessly, or successfully than Special Trials Deputy D.A. Rachel Knight. But with her latest homicide investigation, she’s under a new sort of pressure: someone has been watching her every move. Someone who’s Rachel’s equal in brains, but with much more malicious intentions.

It begins when Rachel takes on an impossible case: the murder of an unknown homeless man. Few leads. No reliable witnesses. Rachel is told to stop pursuing the case, but everything changes when she and her best friend Detective Bailey Keller discover that the homeless man’s

killing is connected to the brutal axe-murder of a beloved LAPD cop two years earlier. A murder that ended with the defendant walking out of the courtroom, acquitted by a jury who did not believe that a beautiful woman could have committed such a heinous crime. But the closer they get to the killer, Rachel and Bailey find themselves in the cross-hairs of a remorseless psychopath. One who will stop at nothing to keep her crimes a secret.

Harrowing, smart, and riotously entertaining, GUILT BY DEGREES is a thrilling ride through the world of the streets and courtrooms of Los Angeles with the unforgettable Rachel Knight.

Title:  Off Sides

Author:  Sawyer Bennett

Release date:  February 21, 2013

Genre:  Contemporary Romance

Age Group:  New Adult

Event organized by: AToMR Tours

Amazon * Goodreads

Book Description:

“I’m not sure what possessed me to do it. Maybe it was the impossible expectations I faced, maybe it was my own self-loathing. But I just knew I needed something different to happen. I needed someone…something…to derail me from my current path. Otherwise, I would become lost…a hollowed out shell of a man. So I did it. I approached her, then I pursued her, then I made her mine. And my life was saved…”

Ryan Burnham is the privileged son of a U.S. Congressman and captain of his university’s hockey team. While he is on the verge of fulfilling his dreams to play in the NHL, his parents want him on a different course. One he is expected to accept for the sake of his family’s public image.

Forced to abandon her music career after the heart breaking death of her parents, Danny Cross exists on the opposite side of the tracks from Ryan. She is struggling to make her own way, working two jobs, attending college part time and volunteering in a homeless shelter. She is on a mission to build her own success.

With a chance meeting, their vastly different worlds collide, causing each to evaluate whether they are truly on the correct path to self-fulfillment and happiness. Can their relationship survive? Particularly when others are against them every step of the way. A lot can happen in just ten short days…

Excerpt:

Ryan opens my car door for me and takes my hand. We walk together to my apartment door and I’m looking for my keys in my purse, all of a sudden nervous. A minute ago I was ready to jump in bed with Ryan, but now, in the harsh fluorescent light of the hallway outside of my apartment, I’m faced with the uncertainty of a relationship with a man who is so different than me.

Putting his finger under my chin, Ryan tilts my head up to his and says, “Don’t.”

He knows I’m doubting this and that tells me a lot about how perceptive he is. Before I can respond he pulls me to him and kisses me…hard. And every thought flies out of my head.

My hands snake up his chest and wrap around his neck before slipping into his hair. It’s as soft and silky as I had been trying hard not imagine. Our tongues are swirling…stabbing…and then my teeth grab his bottom lip and bite. He answers me with a guttural sound that vibrates from his mouth into mine.

Without breaking our hold on each other, Ryan pushes me one step backward until my back is pressed into my door. His hands graze down my sides until they reach my hips. His fingers dig in, pulling me tight against him and I can feel his hardness. I am drowning in Ryan, or maybe he’s downing in me by the sounds of his ragged breathing, I do not know. I just know I have never been kissed like this before and something warm is unfurling in my chest in response to this passion.

Ryan finally pulls away slightly, breathing hard against my mouth. “Jesus, Danny.”

I don’t think Jesus has anything to do with the explosion that just happened between us but if He did, I’m heading to church this weekend to thank Him.

Title: Corporate Affair (Small Town Series)

Author: Linda Cunningham

Publisher: Omnific Publishing

Release date: March 2013

Genre: Contemporary Romance

Age Group: Adult

Tour organized by: AToMR Tours

Book Description:

A smart, sexy entrepreneur. A wealthy, arrogant ladies’ man set on purchasing her company. And a hotbed of chemistry neither one of them anticipated.

Aiden Stewart is just going through the motions of running the family business, a mega communications company snapping up all the competition. His trip to a tiny New England town to negotiate the purchase of ChatDotCom is nothing more than an interruption in his plans for his next female conquest. The last thing he expects is for Chat’s CEO M. Jordan Fitzgerald to be a woman who takes his breath away.

Jordan is focused on business, not romance. She’s got too much at stake, working to protect Chat’s employees, as well as making sure her family is taken care of. Falling in love is not part of the business plan, but resisting the man she really should not want is proving impossible.

When a rival wants to take over Chat too, Jordan struggles to keep her personal life from affecting the business deal. With secrets that could ruin everything, she has to decide if she can balance business with pleasure.

Linda Cunningham introduces hot new characters in her second Small Town novel, a steamy office romance set in idyllic Clark’s Corner, Vermont.

Review:

I had not read anything by Linda before and I must say that I did enjoy Corporate Affair!  Sure it has the typical romance plot – boy meets girl and they fall in love….but this was much more.  There was a little intrigue/danger as well and even though you know that everything has to come out all right, there are parts that leave you on the edge of your seat wondering if it really will happen that way.  I thought the interaction between Jordan and Aiden was believable and he helped her see that she doesn’t have to do it all herself and she helped him see that you can have a meaningful relationship, that it doesn’t have to be all about sex.

Overall I give this story 4 paws and can’t wait to see what Linda has in store with the next Small Town series!  (And April and Gracie like her dog and want to be friends!)

Synopsis:

Music critic Claire Abby is a single mom dreading her daughter’s departure for college and worried that turning forty will leave her career running on fumes. She’s floored when she lands a Rolling Stone cover story on 80s British rock legend Christopher Penman. She spent her teenage years fantasizing he was her boyfriend.

In person, Christopher is everything Claire feared he’d be—charming, witty and unwilling to address the rumors he’s dodged for a decade. Still, she contains her adolescent fantasies and manages to earn his trust, unearthing the truth and the devastating secret behind it. His blockbuster story is her first priority when she returns home, a nearly impossible task when Christopher starts calling and flirting. She knows she should maintain a professional distance. She knows she should focus on the story. She knows it would be best to simply walk away. But how can she say “no” to the man she could never forget?

Review:

I think we all have had fantasies about one celebrity or another, but here Claire gets to meet her idol…now that is a fantasy come true!  She believes she isn’t good enough for someone like him because she isn’t famous or some knock out blonde bombshell.  But even celebrities want a low key normal life.  I liked the interplay between Claire and Chris, the restraint to not jump into something too fast but when they jump it is with both feet and aware of who they are and what they could possibly have together.  Then there is Sam, Claire’s daughter, and her “boy issues” which is mostly due to her age…who didn’t have those problems when they were a teenager?

I really enjoyed this book and recommend it to everyone!  I give it 4 paws and next time you want a fun romance, check this one out.  Worth the $4.99 pricetag!

Excerpt:

There was no time for my eyes to adjust from late morning on the street to the softly lit lobby before my surroundings faded and my vision focused on a point. The image ahead left me considering an abrupt turn on my heel and a swift escape.

There he sat, no more than ten feet away, reading the New York Times while wearing silvery sunglasses. I decided he must be napping because he didn’t strike me as the type to read the Times.  He wore an artfully distressed pair of jeans and a black t-shirt under a tan canvas jacket, much too light for such a cold day. His short, chestnut brown hair was arranged into a tousled mess.
I mulled over my best approach and then he confounded me a second time by making eye contact, through the sunglasses no less, folding his paper and striding toward me. I looked behind me assuming he must recognize someone else.

“You must be Ms. Abby.” He held out his hand. “Chris Penman.”

Countless thoughts and questions erupted in my head. Wow. I’m glad I wore heels. He’s tall. His accent is different in person. It’s like butter. British butter. Did I remember perfume this morning? Oh crap. My breath. I should have had a piece of gum in the car. Are my hands clammy? Why do they always get that way when I’m nervous?

“Yes. Oh, Claire.” I offered my sweaty hand. “Please. Thank you. Hi.” Cotton candy had graciously stepped in to take over for my saddled brain.

“Oh great, uh, it’s Claire then.” He cocked his head to the side. “Please, call me Chris. I Googled you this morning and found a photo. I like to know what I’m up against.” He chuckled, removed his sunglasses and shook my hand in one seamless movement.

I caught a glimpse of his eyes and everything turned syrupy. I began searching for words, an intelligent response, and it happened—I became tangled up in his eyes, drawn into them because my mind was convinced there was nowhere else to go. The color was so astounding that it deserved its own name, calling them “green” would have been so dismissive, it couldn’t begin to capture the hypnotic nature of the hue. Apple, forest, grass, jade, emerald, moss, clover—somewhere, there had to be a name for his green.

Christopher duly noted my disorientation and nudged the day ahead. “Shall we?” he asked, motioning for the lobby door.

“I’m sorry. I thought we were doing the interview in the hotel,” I pleaded as I shuffled along with him.

“If it’s all the same to you, I was hoping to skip that. A bit contrived, isn’t it?”

“Uh, sure.” I stopped. “I need to check my bag…” My voice feathered away.

“Here.” He plucked my overnight bag from my hand and marched it to the front desk. “Please hold this for Ms. Abby. She’ll be checking in later.” He returned in a flash. “Better?” He towered over me, seeming annoyed.

“Yes. Thank you. Where are we going?”

He didn’t bother with an answer, but instead sent a profusion of warmth over me by hovering his hand near the small of my back as the doorman held the door.

Baked Alaska by Josi S. Kilpack

An Alaskan cruise is the setting for amateur detective Sadie Hoffmillers latest adventure. Sadie plans to spend time relaxing with her two grown children, Breanna and Shawn, and her boyfriend, Pete, while enjoying the luxury and cuisine of an elegant cruise ship and helping to plan her daughters upcoming wedding. When the woman is discovered unconscious during the second night at sea, Sadies apprehension escalates. Over the last few years, Sadie has developed an extreme dislike for secrets and it would seem her son is keeping one from her. *Includes eight new mouthwatering recipes, tested and approved by the official bakers of Sadies Virtual Test Kitchen.

Review

This is the first book I have read in this series…and this is book #9!  It has been on my wishlist on Paperbackswap.com for awhile since my library does not carry these books.  I was hoping to be able to read some of the earlier works to get a feel for the characters, but it wasn’t in the cards.  That being said this is a typical cozy….a non-police type person manages to solve the crime.  Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE cozies!  If you have seen my Mystery Mondays, they are mostly cozy series.  Anyway, I had high hopes for this series and I found it to be a little better than average.  I think my problem was with Sadie.  She was very annoying.  I understand protecting your kids but she goes overboard (at least in this book).  When she wasn’t freaking out over the situation with the kids, the book was actually quite good and the storyline flowed quite nicely.  There were some interesting twists and I didn’t guess who the killer was until those final clues were revealed.

Overall I would give this 3 1/2 paws.  I’m willing to start with book 1 and give this series another shot!

Praise for Baked Alaska

Josi Kilpack has done it again. You would think that all these events that occur in Sadie’s life wouldn’t be natural, but Josi Kilpack has a way of making you believe that it just “happens” and it is normal. I have grown to love Sadie’s character, even if she is a busybody, you can’t help but cheer for her as she attempts to solve a mystery or crime. One of my favorite series. 🙂

Starseed

Author: Liz Gruder

ISBN: 978-1937178291

Publisher: WiDo Publishing

Published: February 2013

SUMMARY

Kaila Guidry has always known she is different. When she meets Jordyn Stryker at school, she finds out just how different.

Jordyn was born and raised far from Earth, a starseed, one of six new students sent to Louisiana’s Bush High to learn human ways. But Jordyn didn’t count on meeting someone like Kaila.

When Kaila is pushed to her limit by high school bullying and cruelty, Jordyn awakens her to a new reality—and to love. But to prove herself, Kaila must look the other way as the real purposes of the starseeds unfold.

As the horrific plan behind the starseed visit to Earth moves inexorably forward, Kaila and Jordan, caught in an impossible love, must determine where their true loyalties lie.

Praise

“You know from the opening paragraph that something very strange is going on… We see Kaila try to live the life of a normal teen, and we see her “otherness” pull her back into an increasingly tangled web of questions, deceit, and hidden intentions. Liz really shines as a writer, lining the closets and drawers of everyday life with spine-chilling suspense that springs out at you when you least expect it. Starseed is an entertaining read. I highly recommend.”

–Patricia B. Smith. Author “What the Animals Tell Me” and “Fifty Shades of Santa” (clean romance fiction)

“Liz Gruder’s characters come alive through youthful, spunky narrative, and her headstrong heroine, Kaila Guidry, elicits a reader’s encouragement from the first page. Fans of Amanda Hocking will find themselves similarly transported into Gruder’s exploration of the dark sides of faith, love, higher dimensions, and, of course, high school.” –Jadie Jones, young-adult fantasy author

Synopsis:

Hunted, Book One of The Gates Legacy

Deep in the heart of New York City’s underworld, a horrible disease is ravaging the vampire community. The Vampire Council is on a crusade to obliterate those infected, and Harrow Gates is target Number One. The unwitting source of the plague, he suffers from the same nightmarish symptoms as his victims. The world he’d been thrust into was cold, cruel, and intent on eradicating him, and the legions of afflicted vampires he created with his bite.

A bounty hanging over his head, satisfying his hunger has become an enormous challenge for Harrow. The less he feeds, the more hideous and painful his lesions become. Constantly running for his life and learning new tricks to survive, Harrow is in no position to refuse when Pritchard Tack offers him a unique opportunity. Pritchard not only gives Harrow a new beginning, but also a purpose and a chance to rectify the chaos he created in the vampire world. However, the multi-billionaire has an agenda of his own.

Jordan is a reluctant new vampire and a woman on a mission. After the demise of her family and her own transformation at the hands of Goran, the ruthless leader of the Vampire Council, her only focus is revenge. Constantly faced with one frustrating dead-end after another, a stroke of luck leads her to an underground facility that she suspects is the lair of the monster for whom she is looking.

Upon learning more about the truth behind the secret bunker, Jordan must fight against her growing feelings of friendship and concern for the facility’s inhabitants. One man in particular threatens to pull her heart away from her sworn mission. There is something behind Harrow’s dark lenses that unsettles the hardened female. Once again, she trembles and hungers for something other than red-stained revenge. Is love strong enough to override her hate-fueled thirst for vengeance?

Excerpt:

“There really isn’t a second scenario, we’re dead set and conceptually right about the first one.” Pritchard chuckled. Harrow hissed under his breath, unable to control his hunger any longer. “You need to feed. I know Tor rudely interrupted your dinner. Intel confirms that needle in your pocket, meant you’re not advocating the spread of the disease, am I right?”

Harrow shuddered before nodding. His could feel his strength fading and there wasn’t a damn thing he could do about it. This human, in all of his infinite wisdom, should give him his neck and be done with.

“I know what you’re thinking Harrow,” Pritchard laughed without humor. “I’m not the enemy here, or your dinner. I will take you to a cell for now, where you will be fed donated blood until we find a cure for that ailment.  Neither of you are prisoners here, but until we are certain that you’re not a threat to us humans, you will not be allowed to move around freely.”

Pritchard rose to his feet. “Follow me,” he told Harrow.

“What about these damn cuffs on our leg, we’re not animals you know.” Tor said and his voice thundered through the room.  He was already up on his feet and facing off with Lambert, who was sporting a push dagger, notably of Dangeran material.

“They are trackers, in case you are out there,” Lambert motioned with his hand. “We will know how to find you.”

“Just like we’re dogs, right?” Tor said distastefully.

“Yes, but very special dogs,” Lambert said, taunting as he grabbed Tor’s elbow and shoved him forward to follow Pritchard and Harrow.  They were already walking down the long corridor that eventually led them to a windowless suite. The furnishings were top-rated, lavish to be exact. There were two king-sized beds, a state of the art sound system sitting next to a giant television, expensive looking art adorned the wall, and plush carpeting to boot.

Written in forty-five days, the grueling writing schedule was a personal challenge, even though she thought it was madness at first.

She enjoys dabbling in different genres with an intense focus on angst and the redemption of flawed characters. Her fascination with romantic twists is a mainstay in all her stories.

She currently lives in California with her husband, children, and two demanding dogs. Lorenz spends most of her free time writing while also working as a Business Office Manager for a skilled-rehabilitation hospital.

“Well written and very fast paced. You won’t get bored or find your mind wandering. I’d love to see a sequel to this collection and see what happens next. I give this book five out of five donuts.”

“This book starts off dipping its toe right into the heart of the story, not unlike Ms. White’s YA novel Elemental, and the story never really slows down to a lazy pace; making it a very easy and fast read.”

“Ms. White wonderfully succeeded in instilling humor into ten short stories about vampires, zombies, ghosts, and one mad scientist. Each story is brilliantly linked. The Victorian era setting delightfully adds to the humor.”

“This is a wonderful mix of Steampunk and Horror written in Emily White’s unmistakable brilliance and style. Does it get any better than that?”

About Author Emily White

Emily White lives in NY, wedged between two of the Great Lakes and a few feet of snow and ice. She’s spent most of her life running away from the cold, and even spent a year in Iraq, but now contents herself with writing her characters into warm, exotic places in faraway galaxies. When not tapping away at her computer keys, she can be found reading, reading, and reading some more. And when she’s not doing that, she’s usually playing video games with her husband, peek-a-boo with her kids, or walking through her garden, wondering why the bugs insist on eating all her vegetables.
