dogonit

Meet Chet, the wise and lovable canine narrator of Dog on It, who works alongside Bernie, a down-on-his-luck private investigator. Chet might have flunked out of police school (“I’d been the best leaper in K-9 class, which had led to all the trouble in a way I couldn’t remember exactly, although blood was involved”), but he’s a detective through and through.

In this, their first adventure, Chet and Bernie investigate the disappearance of Madison, a teenage girl who may or may not have been kidnapped, but who has definitely gotten mixed up with some very unsavory characters. A well-behaved, gifted student, she didn’t arrive home after school and her divorced mother is frantic. Bernie is quick to take the case — something about a cash flow problem that Chet’s not all that clear about — and he’s relieved, if vaguely suspicious, when Madison turns up unharmed with a story that doesn’t add up. But when she disappears for a second time in a week, Bernie and Chet aren’t taking any chances; they launch a full-blown investigation. Without a ransom demand, they’re not convinced it’s a kidnapping, but they are sure of one thing: something smells funny.

Their search for clues takes them into the desert to biker bars and other exotic locals, with Chet’s highly trained nose leading the way. Both Chet and Bernie bring their own special skills to the hunt, one that puts each of them in peril. But even as the bad guys try to turn the tables, this duo is nothing if not resourceful, and the result is an uncommonly satisfying adventure.

With his doggy ways and his endearingly hardboiled voice, Chet is full of heart and occasionally prone to mischief. He is intensely loyal to Bernie, who, though distracted by issues that Chet has difficulty understanding — like divorce, child custody, and other peculiar human concerns — is enormously likable himself, in his flawed, all-too-human way.

Alex Kosmitoras’s life has never been easy. The only other student who will talk to him is the school bully, his parents are dead broke and insanely overprotective, and… oh yeah, he’s blind.

Just when he thinks he’ll never have a shot at a normal life, an enticing new girl comes to their small Midwest town all the way from India. Simmi is smart, nice, and actually wants to be friends with Alex. Plus she smells like an Almond Joy bar. Sophomore year might not be so bad after all.

Alex is in store for another new arrival—an unexpected and often embarrassing ability to “see” the future. Try as he may, Alex is unable to ignore his visions, especially when they suggest Simmi is in mortal danger.

With the help of the mysterious psychic next door and friends who come bearing gifts of their own, Alex embarks on his journey to change the future.

 Review:

I really enjoyed this book!  I wasn’t sure if I would or not, but it seems like I have been reading more and more sci-fi/fantasy/YA books as of late.  It is always good to step out of ones comfort zone!  While the main characters are teens they have a lot resting on their shoulders.  They have abilities that they are either just learning about or developing with the help of others.  And of course with new abilities comes the trial and error and figuring out what works and what does not.  Some parts don’t seem realistic, but then this is a book and fiction, so you have to allow for that.

Overall I give it 4 paws and if this sounds interesting to you, definitely put it on your TBR list!

About The Author…

From an early age, Emlyn Chand has counted books among her best friends. She loves to hear and tell stories and emerged from the womb with a fountain pen grasped firmly in her left hand (true story). Her affinity for the written word extends to absolutely every area of her life: she has published three novels and three children’s books with plans for many more of each, leads a classics book group with almost five-hundred members, and, of course, runs the whole shebang at Novel Publicity.

The book that changed Emlyn’s life is Harold and the Purple Crayon by Crocket Johnson. It opened her eyes to the world that could exist if only she was willing to create it—a lesson she has never forgotten. While she enjoys all types of novels, her greatest loves are literary fiction and YA. She’s best known for her Farsighted series and is developing a slow but steady following for the Bird Brain Books. She’s eager to see how her women’s fiction novel, Torn Together, will be received by the reading masses.

Synopsis:

Danger lurks at every turn for Katie Greer.

Having escaped death in the past, Katie Greer has taken residence in a New Hampshire town where life appears idyllic, but is far from it. Teaching tangled doodling classes in her art studio allows Katie to reach out to people who require a semblance of peace and tranquility in their lives. If only she could maintain those two things for herself, Katie would be completely happy.

After finding the dead body of the town’s infamous, and most mean spirited, gossip frozen on the bench outside her Tangled Wings Studio, Katie realizes her efforts to hide her true identity and live a normal life are for naught. As the prime suspect of ruggedly handsome Detective Jonah Kilbride, Katie searches for the killer in order to prove her own innocence. Much to her dismay, Katie’s attraction for the relentless detective steadily grows, despite their continuous battles.

Past events threaten Katie at every turn, catching her unaware, and creating havoc in a life she’s desperately tried to establish in the town where she’d briefly found happiness. Can she survive or will she become the next victim on the killer’s list?

Review:

I love a good mystery and I love them even more when I can learn about something new…in this case, a form of art called Zentangle.  Apparently it is a cross between meditation and doodling (but I’m sure those that practice this would insist it is NOT doodling!).  Anyway, I thought this was a pretty good book…yes some parts were not realistic (do people really fall head over heels in love in such a short period of time)?  And this was a cozy to me, which means someone else solves the crime and doesn’t share information with the police….in fact, Katie (despite the fact that she says she loves Jonah) can be hard-headed…but then what female sleuth in a novel isn’t this way?  It wouldn’t be a cozy if that wasn’t a trait of the main character.  I thought there was a good back story on how Katie came to town, it made for an interesting twist to the story.

All in all I really enjoyed this book and hope that it is the first in a new series.  I guess we’ll see if J.M. comes out with more books with this main character.  I give it 4 paws and recommend it if you like cozy mysteries.

open heart tour

Synopsis:

Simmi Shergill’s life is a mess. Her powers of psychic feeling are on the fritz, and Grandon Township’s sudden population boom has brought quite a few unsavory characters to town. She also looks like an over-blown balloon in her size 14 pants, but not even starving herself seems to be helping.

At least she has Alex, the boyfriend who loves her so much he’d do anything for her. Last summer, he even risked his life to protect her from the mysterious boy everyone was convinced wanted to kill her.

Just one problem: she’s not so sure she feels the same way. Is Alex really the man of her dreams? Why can’t she stop fixating on her would-be killer, Dax? Part of her wants to run screaming in the other direction whenever Dax is around, while the other part longs to run into his embrace, no matter whom she’d hurt or what she’d risk.

Simmi’s loyalty is on the line. Whom will she choose—the blind seer who loves her, or the charming telekinetic with “bad idea” written all over him? Emotions run high in the tension-packed book two of the Farsighted series.

Review:

I read the first book and really enjoyed it and had high hopes for the second book.  I’ll have to say that it was good, but in a different way.  These are YA books and deal with some YA issues and in this case, it was how Simmi felt about herself and purging because she thought that would make everything better.  Sadly, eating disorders harm a lot of young women in the world because they see what “society” thinks they need to look like and if you don’t fit that mold you are slapped with a label.  I like how the author brought this subject into the book and perhaps how the character acts and reacts will help another young person deal with the same situation.

There is more to the story that we don’t know yet and probably won’t find out until later books…such as what is Dax’s story and why does Alex really not like him?  Will Simmi come to truly accept her powers?  I guess we will have to read the next books to find out!

Death and Kisses

“My only thought was for Aden. I ran to him, kicking up water and called out his name. He turned and my heart skidded, crumbled and dropped to my feet. Not Aden, but Brad. Then where was . . .?

I looked down to where Brad’s gaze had been focused, down, down, in the murky water towards the center of the pond. No. Noooo! I shouldn’t be able to see him through the stirred-up sediment, but I did. Pascual was drowning Aden just as he had drowned Brad.”

One night changed Kasey’s life forever. The star football player drowned and everyone at school blames her. And oh, yeah, since that night, she can see ghosts. Not that she’s afraid of them. Much. She’s more concerned with staying under the radar as the school’s once-popular, now outcast loner freak. Until the boy she supposedly killed shows up wanting revenge.

Regardless of Kasey’s outcast status, the hot new guy in school, Aden, wants to help her figure out how to get the angry ghost to leave her alone. So what if he also wants to contact his dead brother? And why are all the ghosts suddenly following Aden around?

Author Mary Jane Clark has two mystery series that are very good!  This weeks feature is her Wedding Cake cozy series (at least I consider it more cozy than the Key News thrillers!) and the 3rd book in that series, Footprints in the Sand.  The first book is To Have and To Kill and the second is The Look of Love.

footprints

Synopsis:

It’s the dead of winter and struggling actress and wedding-cake decorator Piper Donovan is thrilled to be in warm and romantic Sarasota, Florida, enjoying the powdery white beaches, soothing seas, and golden sunsets over the Gulf of Mexico. She and her family are there to celebrate her beloved cousin’s wedding. Not only is Piper creating the sugar-sand-dollar-festooned wedding cake, she’s also the maid of honor.

But a cloud seems to be hovering over the whole affair. Shortly after a bridesmaid mysteriously disappears, a kindly neighbor’s car is run off the road and a prospective witness, an innocent Amish teenager, is threatened to keep silent. Then a body is found on the beach where the wedding will take place. With the nuptials threatened, it falls to Piper to unmask a killer. Could it be the wedding planner with something to hide? A doctor and his wife who collect unusual Japanese figurines? The best man, an ex–drug dealer with lecherous eyes and roving hands? What about her cousin’s future stepfather—or even the bridegroom himself?

As Piper gets close to figuring out who’s been covering his guilty footprints in the sand, the cunning killer has already set his sights on Piper as his next victim!

ugly tour

Synopsis:

Everyone knows how all those fairy tales go. The princess gets beautiful, nabs her prince, falls instantly in love, lives happily ever after and leaves her evil stepsisters in the dust.

But what happens when you’re the ugly stepsister and your obnoxiously perfect—read pretty, smart, and, worst of all, sickeningly nice—stepsister is dating the charming, tall, devastatingly handsome guy you’ve had a thing for since you were nine years old?

Quirky, artistic and snarky Mattie Lowe does not lead a charmed life. Her mother is constantly belittling her on Skype. Mercedes, the school mean girl, has made it her personal mission to torment Mattie. But worst of all? Her stepsister Ella is the most beautiful, popular girl in school and is dating Mattie’s secret longtime crush, Jake Kingston.

Tired of being left out and done with waiting for her own stupid fairy godmother to show up, Mattie decides to change her life. She’ll start by running for senior class president against wildly popular Jake.

Ella can keep her Prince Annoying. Mattie’s going to rule the school.

And no one, not even a cute and suddenly flirty Jake, is going to stop her.

Review:

Lately I have really gotten into YA books.  I’m not sure if it is because it makes me think I am younger than I am or something else.  The title of this book  is what piqued my curiosity…after all, who wouldn’t want to see what the Ugly Stepsister’s point of view.  I LOVED the story.  Mattie isn’t really the Ugly Stepsister she thinks that she is and Ella isn’t Cinderella…well maybe a little bit, but she has a big heart.  Mattie reminded me of my high school days (which I am find not reliving thank you very much) and the cliques and how some people can be petty and downright mean.  Dad doesn’t seem to be tuned in much to his kids, at least not at first but he eventually comes around with the help of his new love interest which can only be good for Mattie and Ella….nothing worse than an absentee father.

Over all I give this book 5 paws and highly recommend it.  Pick it up next time you are out at a book store, shopping on Amazon or at the library.

Pearl is the first novel for author Malory Thomas.  Malory contacted me about reading and reviewing her book and I love to read first books for new authors.  Sometimes they are good and sometimes not.  I’m happy to say that Pearl fit into the good category (but more on that shortly)!  I also did a short interview with Maloryher, I always like finding out more about new authors and what makes them tick (well to a degree!)

What inspired you to write Pearl?

I took a creative writing class in graduate school for fun and I wrote the first few chapters of Pearl in that class. At the time, Pearl was meant to be strictly a short story, but I became fond of her, and wanted to explore her life further by putting her beliefs to test through her relationship with Austin.

In terms of the setting, I actually briefly worked in a convenience story in Vermont while I was in college.

Are any of the characters based on people that you know?

Bits and pieces of the characters remind me of someone I know. Pearl reminds me of a relative; Vern reminds me of a former boss, and Austin was inspired by a younger co-worker that I had an an and off quasi-romantic relationship with.

Is this your first published book?

I have actually published a dozen science library books under another name. Pearl is my first novel.

Who are some of your favorite authors?

Wow, where do I start? My list is huge, but recently I found a few authors that I have fallen in love with: Maria Semple (Where’d You Go, Bernadette), Matthew Quick (Silver Linings Playbook), Liz Moore (Heft), and Carol Rifka Brunt (Tell the Wolves I’m Home)

What books are on your nightstand (or what are you reading right now)?

Right now I’m reading Book of Illusions by Paul Auster and This Is How You Lose Her by Junot Diaz is up next on my nightstand. On my e-reader,the two up next are Pretty Little Liars (Sara Shepard) and Waking Up Married (Mira Lyn Kelly). I love the depth of literary fiction, but I also like the dialogue and quick-pacing of genre fiction, particularly romance.

Pearl

Synopsis:

Pearl, a married 30-year-old convenience store worker, longs for change and excitement. Believing she can find it in the purchase of a Mustang, she soon learns that her co-worker, Austin, a recent college graduate, offers the thrill she’s missed out on.

When circumstances force the two apart, Pearl faces the difficult decision of repairing her marriage, thereby staying true to her religious beliefs, or disrupting her entire life to explore something life-changing.

Review:

At first I thought this book would all be told from Pearl’s point of view, but there are also sections where Austin and Vern tell their story.  I think this helped round out the story, because as the saying goes, there are always 2 sides to every story (or 3 in this case).  Pearl married young to leave a not so good situation, but she didn’t realize that marrying Vern may not be the best option.  When she ventures out and gets a job and starts working with Austin, she realizes that perhaps there is more to life out there than keeping the house clean and making a meal for someone that doesn’t appear to appreciate the effort.  I like that Pearl learns to stand up for herself (of course that also gets her into a little bit of trouble initially) and to seek out a better life than what she has had until that point.  Vern also manages to grow in the novel.  It is always nice to see people learn from their mistakes.

Overall I give it 4 paws and suggest checking it out if you have an eReader (or get the Kindle app for your PC).
