The Fate of a Marlowe Girl

When twenty-four-year-old Tiffany escapes her sister Kammy’s too wild Cancun bachelorette party, she finds herself in a bar with the unwanted attention of a gorgeous local named Luke.
Luke may be charming but Tiffany is leaving in two days and doesn’t need any complications. But complications are exactly what she gets when the cops show up to raid Kammy’s party. When Kammy is arrested, Tiffany agrees to have dinner with Luke, so he’ll help her get Kammy out of jail. Kammy’s arrest forces her to spend an extra day in Cancun, meaning she’ll miss a crucial meeting, and as an accountant in tax season, she is already drowning in work. Not to mention, every second she spends with Luke makes it harder to leave. With Luke, Tiffany is almost ready to forget about work.

Will the airport be their final goodbye?

Review:

This was a fast read for me, and I don’t think it was too long either.  I find it fascinating the guilt that Tiffany feels when her mother pressures her to host (and pay for) her sister’s bachelorette party when the man she is married dated Tiffany first.  True she was going to break up with him, but what a weird family dynamic!  I did think that Tiffany was a little crazy for going off with a guy she met in Mexico not knowing anything about him.  Perhaps I live too close to Mexico and hear about all the things that happen down there.  There was probably more that we could have learned about the characters before it jumps to the end, but for a shorter story if flowed nicely.  We give it 4 paws.

The Other Marlowe Girl

When twenty-four-year-old dance school drop out Kammy Marlowe is evicted by her mother, she goes to her favorite bar. She finds an unlikely friend in the blunt eye candy, Enrique. But Kammy knows there is no way she and Enrique have a shot because he’s her brother-in-law’s brother and has been privy to her wild past.

Enrique swears he’s only interested in the person she is today, but their relationship is tested when her ex-husband’s drug dealer attacks her, looking for money. With no options and a money hungry drug dealer on her back, Kammy accepts a position as a dancer at a strip club. But when Enrique shows up at the club, their relationship is over. With no reason to stay in Texas anymore, Kammy auditions for the Bolshevik Ballet and gets the opportunity to go to Russia. Only Enrique is determined to stop her.

Will she give up the chance of a lifetime to stay with the man she still loves?

Review:

I started this one right after The Fate of a Marlow Girl, and while the story was good, it didn’t grab me like the other one.  Maybe it is because Kammy and Enrique were the black sheep in their family and it doesn’t seem like they should have gotten together?  The story was still good and I liked that Tiffany and Luke were in this book as well (fairly prominently) and we learn more about what happens after book one and before book two starts.  Kammy is a mess and of course still expecting big sister to bail her out.  Enrique isn’t happy with his life but isn’t taking responsibility for it either.  You just want to take them by the arms and shake them and say “grow up! life is NOT easy!”  However the book ended nicely and sets it up for the third book in the series which is about the other brother.

We give it 3 1/2 paws

When Annie is unexpectedly given the opportunity to see the young man who broke her heart — a man who is now a megastar in the music industry — Annie is faced with choices. Today’s feature of Mystery Monday takes us to New York with the book The Eskimo Hunts in New York by author Stefan Kanfer.

eskimo

Synopsis:

Jordan Gulok is an Inuit, an Eskimo in common parlance, and a former Navy SEAL. In his freelance capacity he can do things—like tracking and on occasion killing malefactors—that are beyond the authority of the uniformed services. Jordan has an expense account and liberty to travel throughout the U.S. In turn, the U.S. government has plausible deniability should he ever get caught stretching or violating the law.

In The Eskimo Hunts in New York, Jordan’s assignment involves stopping a lethal international group who’s manufacturing illegal and sometimes toxic pharmaceuticals and selling them to victims in Africa, Asia, Europe and America. In one of the worst blizzards in the City’s history, subways, buses and taxis become useless. Even fire trucks and police cars are rendered immobile. But for Jordan cold weather is only a minor obstacle; after all, he grew up hunting polar bear and reindeer on ice and snow.

His targets are managing a multi-billion dollar business that has killed thousands, and they soon become aware of him as their Enemy Number One. The idea of a lone man bringing down their organization is unthinkable. In previous cases, Jordan always acted alone, but as the cartel closes in on him, he turns to Rose Ho, a possible love interest and operative in a regional office of the Department of the Navy.

Rose has great connections—for example, her wealthy father is the unofficial mayor of Chinatown—but are all her connections among the good guys? Can she provide the help he needs, or is she trouble in a green silk skirt?

Review:

I love a good mystery/suspense/thriller novel and this one definitely filled the bill.  It was intense, involved the government and the Russian mafia and one man who thought he could do it all…and pretty much did!  I wondered at different times about several of the characters and their true role in this novel.  Were they who they said they were?  Could they be trusted?  Sometimes the answer was yes and sometimes it was a resounding NO!  Sometimes I wonder if what we read could really happen….sure it is fiction, but could some of it really happen?  I think it probably happens more than we think.

I liked the flashbacks to his life growing up and how Eskimos lived and what he was taught as a child.  I think that contributed to the character’s strengths and maybe some weaknesses.  The interaction with Rose was interesting and I wondered how that relationship would work out.  Lots of great twists and turns in the plot, it will keep you guessing!

We give it 4 paws.

deadlyrecall

Synopsis:

A terrifying memory is locked deep inside her. A killer wants to keep it that way.

Nine-year-old Eden Moran thought she was saying good-bye to her mentor that fateful day in St. Patrick’s. She had no idea she’d witness the nun’s demise, or that her child’s mind would compensate. Now seventeen years later, Albuquerque cops have unearthed human remains, and the evidence points to Eden as being the key to solving Sister Beatrice’s murder. When a hellbent cop applies pressure, Eden stands firm. She doesn’t remember the woman. Unfortunately for Eden, Sister Beatrice’s killer will do whatever it takes to keep it that way.

Review:

In case you can’t tell by reading my blog, I love a good mystery/suspense novel.  Deadly Recall is a good example of the kind of book I like to read…lots of intrigue, red herrings and interesting characters.  I honestly had no clue who killed Sister Beatrice seventeen years ago, or the characters in the present.  It definitely was NOT who I thought it would be and I like that…I don’t like to figure it out until the end when everything is being revealed.  I thought it was interesting bringing in the Catholic Church and making a priest a somewhat “evil” character but really just human.  It’s all in the perception.  The developing relationship between Eden and Kevin was a nice bonus to lighten the book.  And let’s not forget the side drama with her family and why she was somewhat estranged from them tying back to the incident 17 years ago.

We enjoyed this and hope to read more by Donnell and give it 4 paws.

33 Valentines

Synopsis:

All Sophie wants for her thirty-third year is a calendar without a February—and without a Valentine’s Day. The unlucky month haunts her with regrets, loss, and missteps she can never take back. But this year, she’s determined to make a change— and she’s going to start with telling her best friend, Sam, how she feels about him.

But February isn’t making it easy for her. Sam’s got a date with his dream girl, and Sophie finds herself in the hospital. Then there’s her father, who has a surprise that’s about to turn her world upside-down, and her little brother, who doesn’t seem to have any room for her in his life. While everyone else seems to be living life, Sophie is stuck in neutral.

Now, Sophie must come to terms with everything that’s holding her back in order to fight for what she wants before she loses the chance to turn her luck around.

Review:

I was not expecting the heroine to break her arm at the beginning of the book!  It seems to set her up for the rest of the book….how her life isn’t wonderful, how she put a lot of emphasis on how bad the month of February is for her and how she is in love with her best friend but can’t bring herself to tell him.  Sophie is a somewhat complex character…or maybe it is just her flaws?  Sophie is the kind of character that makes you want to shake her to snap her out of it but also comfort her and bring her a cup of tea.  Sophie does grow up over the course of the book and her idiosyncrasies had me wondering what in my life needed to change.

Overall I give it 4 paws.

A girl who needs to undo the past.
A boy who wants to forget it.
In love, there’s no way back.

At high school in Steep Hill, Kansas, Cassie O’Malley and Josh MacBride were the poster couple for quarterback/cheerleader romance until they starred in their own tale of teen pregnancy. No need to say: their shotgun wedding was low-key. But when there was no baby anymore, they went their separate ways.

Five years later, Josh has breezed through Georgetown and is about to finish his post-grad degree at Oxford University. He is set to join a lobbying group on Capitol Hill, owned by his new fiancée’s father. For Josh, the sky is now the limit… only he must first take care of a tiny legal matter: technically, he’s still married to the girl who broke his heart.

Meanwhile, Cassie has been waiting tables in Steep Hill to pay for her sick grandmother’s care. On the day of the old lady’s funeral, Cassie is served with two sets of papers. Josh is asking for a divorce. Her heart squeezes, but, well, he moved on a long time ago. But the second envelope shakes Cassie to the core. So, for the first time, she leaves Kansas and heads to good ol’ England.

There, Cassie finds that Josh has not just “moved on,” he’s freakin’ engaged to some blue-blooded heiress. The feelings Cassie had buried deep rush back to her. But no matter if he keeps thrusting the divorce papers under her nose, she needs him to save the only person she loves more than Josh, more than life itself…

Show Up

Writing isn’t hard. Well, it can be hard. It can be as hard as you make it, really. But a lot of people shoot themselves in their feet by staring at that blank page, afraid that any word they write down will be set in stone, unchangeable. And if that’s the case, well, it had better be perfect.

Since we’re not perfect, you can bet those words won’t be, particularly first time out, and that’s okay. That’s what edits are for, and read-throughs. Just start. Just show up.

Many people will get a few thousand words in and stop. It’s no good, they’ll think. There’s no continuity. I can’t make this flow. Wrong. The unwritten piece in your desk drawer could be written. You just have to keep writing it. Keep in mind that it doesn’t have to be good. The point is to finish. Write something, anything.

If it makes you feel better, know that many published writers have the skill of a third-grader writing on an i-phone. You’re not alone. They don’t know your/you’re, or there/their/they’re. They confuse then and than. Hell, they float body parts, and have scenes that don’t make any sense at all. That’s what the editors do. So if you think people who are published are handing in these polished works to publishers and agents, and making it big off their massive skills as wordsmiths, you’ve got it all wrong. You’re just gearing yourself up for an excuse not to write.

And that’s okay, too. Just because you start something doesn’t mean you have to finish it. But don’t rationalize your choice by knocking yourself down. You didn’t not do it because you suck at writing. No. You didn’t do it because you didn’t want to finish it. Take some ownership! Owning our decisions is hard, no doubt. It gives us the responsibility and power to create or not to create, and if we are not creating, sure, we could feel like failures. But to replace that ownership with something that automatically makes us a failure in our own eyes is missing the point entirely. Sure, now we’re not responsible for finishing. Now we just suck.

Is that so much better? Is that better at all?

How to finish that piece you are working on:

1)      Start small. Don’t start with your 80,000-word masterpiece. Do a 6,000-word short story first. See if you can finish it.

2)      Write something every day. Even one sentence. Do not let that project go untouched for a day or you will lose touch with it. It’s easier to walk away from something you haven’t looked at in a week. Every day, add a sentence, a word, anything.

3)      Don’t love your work. Start with something you are not personally invested in. If you are the type who gives up, thinking the work is not good enough, you’ll find it a lot easier to motor through it if you don’t give two tosses about the purity of the message. I know this one seems counterproductive, but it’s not. It helps you to practice the art of writing and the discipline of doing it regularly without putting your self-esteem on the line. It’s an excellent shallow end to this crazy pool.

4)      Make your friends look at it when it’s done. Remember, you don’t even really care about it anyway, so if they come back with harsh words, separate the criticism from yourself and attack that silly story you made, using their suggestions. You will make it better. And you will learn how to accept criticism when it counts, when it really is your baby on the line.

5)      Submit it. Who cares if it gets rejected. It probably will. By a lot of people. But sometimes it doesn’t. And the validation / rejection cycle is a really great way to stop feeling like an amateur sitting alone at your desk, and start feeling like a writer engaging in the entire process. Plus, you never know when someone will recognize your “genius.”

Long story short, the only thing that’s keeping you from writing or from being a writer if you want to be one…is you. So get yourself out of the way, and start writing. The most important part of any job is simply showing up.

Synopsis:

When Graciela Merced fumbles a package she’s delivering for her mysterious and sexy boss, Gene Hardy, she finds out he’s more than just a wealthy photographer. Prepared to lose her job, she confronts him…and ends up embroiled in the tricky takedown of a powerful drug cartel pushing cocaine into the heart of New York City.

Marco Valencia is an undercover agent, working against time—and against Gene Hardy—to crack Angel’s Drug Cartel before the story makes it to the press. When Hardy’s luscious Venezuelan messenger literally falls at his feet, he has no idea just how well he’ll get to know the beauty or how difficult it will be to drop her.

Hardened by experience, Gene Hardy takes his undercover work seriously, and charges a hefty price. When Grace makes a careless mistake and hurls him back into the visage of Marco Valencia, he must either fire her, or involve her in a twisted plot that could kill them all.

As the two men battle over their feelings for Graciela—and their attraction to each other—one thing becomes perfectly clear. Grace is much more than just the messenger.

Review:

When you read the synopsis above you don’t necessarily realize this is a VERY spicy/steamy book!  So just putting that out there right off the bat, if you prefer tame sex scenes, probably shouldn’t read this book.  But if you like to spice it up a bit then definitely consider this book.  With all that said, I started reading the book and the first chapter was really good…then something happened during chapters 2 and maybe 3, it seemed like something was missing or the story jumped ahead and I wasn’t on the same page.  However, once I got through those two chapters the rest of the book flowed nicely.  There is a great back story/plot that held my attention probably because it was suspenseful!  When I got to some of those aforementioned steamy scenes, it was interesting trying to picture it in my head….should I have even admitted to that?!

We give it 4 paws

If there’s one thing Madison Lukas understands, it’s pain. The pain she feels when her mother ignores her completely. The pain her best friend endures as her parents starve her as punishment. The pain of a dangerous boy whose mother has to be carried away by law enforcement on a regular basis.

She gets it. She feels the pain of others as if it were her own.

But when a mysterious man claiming to be her long lost brother appears with promises of relieving her suffering, trusting him could reveal more truths than Madison is ready for. Because the truth can hurt, too.

Hades and the Helm of Darkness (Heroes in Training Book 3)

The Heroes in Training are entering the Underworld—if Hades can conquer his canine fears, that is.

The Underworld usually isn’t really meant to be a fun place—but tell that to Hades! He loves the dark and the stinky smell of sulfur. However, there is one thing that Hades is not a fan of: dogs. And when Zeus and his fellow Olympians encounter Cerberus—a snarling, three-headed dog—Hades must conquer his fears and tame the hound so everyone can continue into the Underworld and deposit their Titan prisoner, Oceanus, back where he belongs!

But with magical water that causes forgetfulness, hot beds of lava, and another epic battle with two more Titans standing in their way, will Zeus and his heroes make it out of the Underworld with everyone intact?

Zeus and the Thunderbolt of Doom (Book 1)
After pulling a magical thunderbolt from a stone, ten-year-old Zeus goes on the adventure of a lifetime in this thrilling start to a brand-new series! The terrible Titans–merciless giants who enjoy snacking on humans–have dominated the earth and put the world into chaos. But their rule is about to be put to the test as a group of young Olympians discover their powers and prepare to righteously rule the universe….

Ten-year-old Zeus is mystified (and super-annoyed) by the fact that he keeps getting hit by lightening. Every. Single. Year. He also longs for adventure, as he has never been far from the cave where he grew up.

Zeus gets his wish–and a lot more than he bargained for–when he is kidnapped by dangerous, giant Titans! In self-defense, he grabs the first thing he sees–an actual thunderbolt he pulls from a stone that is covered in mysterious markings. Zeus is the only one who can decipher the markings, and sets off on a quest to rescue his youthful fellow Olympians from the evil Cronus. Armed with his trusty thunderbolt (named Bolt, of course), Zeus is on an adventure of a lifetime–and a journey to fulfill his destiny as King of the Gods.

Poseidon and the Sea of Fury (Book 2)

A young Poseidon must triumph over aquatic terrors in this Heroes in Training adventure. The merciless Cronus and his Titan buddies are in hot pursuit of Zeus, Hera, and Poseidon, who plan to travel across the treacherous boiling sea in order to save a fellow Olympian. They have a boat, but they also have a problem: Poseidon can’t swim and is terrified of the water (well, really of the creatures that lurk in its depths). The group faces danger after danger as they battle singing sirens, a fishy and ferocious Titan named Oceanus, and people-eating monsters sent by Cronus himself. Can Poseidon overcome his fears and help his fellow heroes escape Cronus and his cronies?

I graduated from college in Texas with a fine arts degree, and then freelanced as an art director at a graphic design firm for eight years. I dreamed of working in children’s books, so I moved to New York City and became associate art director in Scholastic trade books, where I designed books for children and worked with editors and illustrators. It was a great job.

I illustrated my first published children’s book in 1992 and soon began illustrating full time. I began completing manuscripts and mailing them out to publishers in the early 1990s. In 1996, I sold my first two manuscripts — Boo Who? A Spooky Lift-the-Flap Book (Scholastic) and Pen Pals (Grosset & Dunlap). Yippee!

Now I write full time and have written and/or illustrated over 130 children’s books. Creating books that entertain, inform, and interest children (and me) is a fabulous job that I truly love.
