Review:

When Kathy contacted me about reviewing her book, I asked her how much sex was in the book….let’s just say I have been surprised a lot lately.  She said there was 1 scene so I said I would be happy to read and review the book.  I’m not a prude, I’m all for some spicy scenes, but I am trying to keep the blog as clean as possible.  Anyway, this book reminded me of the TV show Fame….high school age students at a dramatic and performing arts school.   The students had a wide variety of personalities, talents and personal histories.  It made for an eclectic group of students.  And of course there always has to be the “mean” girl….trust me you won’t like Letitia!  It was interesting to see how thin the students seemed to stretch themselves in what they participated in during the school year….plays, musicals, dance classes, show choir…the list goes on and on.

Elena, one of the main characters, has a lot going against her from her background to being the subject of ridicule and bullying by Letitia.  She does persevere but without letting her insecurities get the better of her.  I also felt a wide range of emotions from her in the different situations she was placed.

We really enjoyed this book and can’t wait to read book two, Bitter Sweet and give the book 4 1/2 paws.

About the Author:

Kathy Petrakis - color

Kathy was born and raised in Sydney Australia to Greek immigrant parents.  She has always loved the performing arts – dancing, acting and singing but considered them merely hobbies with the expectation of a ‘serious’ professional career.  She won an award at 11 for a short story competition but didn’t pursue any sort of creative writing at that point. Her mother always encouraged her to keep writing but the most she did was entertain friends via emails about her endless travels overseas.

After nearly twenty years in the corporate world, her means of financing her passion for dancing, singing and acting classes, she decided to live in London for an indeterminate amount of time.  She did not know why but found herself with a desire to rekindle the creative writing, the first novel burning in her head. Thus began the birth of the Dancers and Divas Series. It began as one book and has evolved as a trilogy. Since then, she has not been able to stop and has so many ideas constantly begging to be written.

She is also playing with Play and TV Script formats as alternate way of telling stories. Maybe the Dancers and Divas series will be a TV series one day – it is definitely the right type of story for it!

Teaser

Nora hopped into the back and started handing me the heavy boxes so I could bring it all into the house. When it was all unloaded she stood on the tailgate and held out her hand so I could help her to the ground. Instead of grabbing her hand, I wrapped my arms around her thighs to lift her, letting her body slide down mine until her feet touched the ground. I kept my hands on her hips and looked her right in the eye so she would know exactly what was coming.

“Jake – don’t,” she stammered, but didn’t pull away.

“I have to,” I told her, as I leaned forward and gently placed my lips on hers. I held them there for just a moment before pulling back to look at her, and my heart felt like it was beating out of my chest.

“I – I can’t do this, Jake.”

“Then don’t kiss me back.”

I leaned in to kiss her again and tightened my arms around her. Cautiously I moved my lips against hers and brought my hand up to touch her face. I heard her moan softly against my lips and it was all the encouragement I needed. I pressed up against her and when I felt her lips part for me, I let my tongue find hers and tilted her head as I deepened the kiss. As my lips began moving more intensely, she wrapped her arms around my neck and crushed her body against mine.

The need I felt for her turned me completely inside out. I hadn’t planned on kissing her today, but when I looked up at her standing on the tailgate, illuminated from the light of the setting sun, I knew I couldn’t wait. I had to know what it was that I was feeling, and if it was something real or if it was just remnants of the past clouding the present. Still, I wasn’t expecting this. Instead of curbing my appetite for her, it only intensified it. I’d never needed anything as much as I needed Nora.

When I finally pulled away, I brushed my thumb against her cheek and tucked a loose strand of hair behind her ear. “God, I missed you, Nora.”

“This doesn’t change anything,” she said breathlessly, “I still have to go back to New York.”

“We’ll see,” I said simply.

osteoblasts tour

Tour Schedule

Osteoblasts to the Rescue

Merrin and Pearl are at it again! This time these two young Human Body Detectives are exploring the skeletal system.
With the ability to jump in and examine the various systems in the body, Merrin and Pearl’s adventures are fun stories and helpful tools to educate children.
In Osteoblasts to the Rescue, Merrin and Pearl navigate their friend, Lily’s, broken arm and learn all about bones.
As the fourth in The Human Body Detectives series, Osteoblasts to the Rescue can also stand alone as a book that’s sure to inform, engage, and inspire readers of all ages.

 Excerpt:

We do have the gift of going into other people’s bodies to help them feel better, but being a Human Body Detective is a big responsibility and no one seems to need help right now, Merrin thought.

They landed on a hard smooth surface. Happily, they were still together. As their eyes opened, Pearl looked around and Merrin gasped, “Pearl, where are we?”

Pearl leaned over to Merrin and felt along her spine. Merrin shivered a bit. “Those bones you feel when I touch your back are the spinal processes.”

“We need to get to Lily’s left arm, the one that is broken. I want to see the break and understand how the body will fix it. We might be in for a journey, Merrin! Most of the vertebrae have these spinal processes and if we climb up toward her head, we’ll find Lily’s left clavicle, which will lead us to her left arm.”

Oh my, Merrin thought.

Merrin realized Pearl’s shoelace was untied and bellowed out, “Pearl slow down and tie your shoelace!” But she was too late. Pearl tripped and then… She tumbled.  She landed on her stomach, her feet dangling off the rib.

They both looked up and noticed the sternum bone was completely vertical. They would need rock climbing gear to have any chance of getting to the top.  They both looked at each other and wondered if they were brave enough to do it. Who knew where they would land, let alone if they fell off the bone?

At that moment, osteoblasts came storming out from everywhere! They were all over the place. Merrin and Pearl tried to jump out of their way, but the osteoblasts were on a mission and didn’t even notice them.

“Well, I hope Lily is eating enough foods with calcium and phosphorus. Actually, what food does she need to eat to get more of these nutrients?” Merrin asked.

I have always been passionate about healthy foods and exercising. Growing up in Toronto, Canada I would exhaust my allowance at the health food store and write school papers on spices and herbs. It was no wonder I found myself studying biology at Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, Florida. I loved animals as well so I initially focused on wildlife conservation and animal biology, however, with some exposure to naturopathic medicine, this health care philosophy rang true for me. I switched to pre-med and I graduated in 1993. I earned my doctorate at the from the National College of Naturopathic Medicine in Portland, Oregon before moving with my family to Hawaii where I became licensed and continue to practice today.

Everything I learned in medschool came into fruition when my children were born. I realized the importance of teaching them, by example, about healthy food and lifestyle. Telling them what to eat was not enough, so I created and wrote educational adventure stories that explain the physiological systems in the body. Not only did my kids love the engaging and interactive stories but so did their friends.

I love seeing kids have fun learning to understand their bodies and how food helps them run faster and be smarter. My focus is on preventative health. I am passionate about encouraging families to seek the value of a simple lifestyle and offering tools to assist them at being proactive and confident in their daily living. I am constantly inspired seeing people make positive changes in their lives. With my website, I am excited to reach more families in a way that will manifest healthy living.

Excerpt
It was a busy Monday morning.
I was looking out at the line of waiting customers when he walked in. I gasped,
shut my thumb in my cash drawer, and then tried not to cry while Mr. Sandoval
from a hearing aid store asked me if I was okay.
When I finished Mr. Sandoval’s
transaction, I looked at him again. He was taller than anyone in the room. Of
course. His hair was dark and a little disheveled. It was hard to see from
where I was, but his eyes looked like they were blue. And best of all, he
didn’t smile. He looked gorgeously unpleasant and impatient. He looked around
the room and his eyes met mine. Still he didn’t smile. My heart was racing. He
looked perfect.
I did my best to time it so I’d be
his teller. I went a little too fast with one customer and accidentally shorted
her a twenty dollar bill. I tried to concentrate as I corrected the
transaction. I slowed way down on the next customer, but just when I thought I
was finished and would be able to help him next, my customer asked me to break
a ten into change. He walked up to Courtney’s window while I counted out
nickels and dimes. Furious, I stomped my foot. Not too loudly but enough to
release a little of my frustration.
I listened closely as Courtney helped
him to see if I could learn anything, but he hardly spoke. He gave a terse nod
when Courtney thanked him for coming in and turned on his heel and left. He had
excellent posture and a nice, confident stride.
I finished with my customer, and then
before anyone else could step forward, I picked up the phone and dialed
Courtney’s extension. She glanced at her phone’s display and looked over at me
curiously.

“Who was
that?” I whispered when she picked up the receiver.

“Elizabeth, look how many customers
there are.”
“I know. Just tell me who that was.”
I watched as Courtney picked up her last transaction slip.
“His name is Matt Dawson.”
“Is he married?”
“I have no idea,” Courtney said.
“Was he wearing a ring?”
“I didn’t look. What’s going on,
Lizzie?”
“I just need to know about him.”
“Well, I don’t know anything about
him and Delia’s watching us. I’ve gotta go.”
Matt Dawson. Matt. Matthew. Like
Matthew Macfadyen. Dawson. It was pretty close to Darcy. The only way it could
be better is if his name was Fitzwilliam but I’d never met a Fitzwilliam in my
life.
Matt Dawson.
This had to be a sign.

Review:

This is quite a charming story….and by charming I mean funny!  It was like a comedy of errors reading the trials of Piers and Sidney and Little and Large (you’ll have to read the story to figure that one out!).  I truly enjoyed this and this is the kind of book I like, one that draws me in and is funny and makes reading the book seem like a flash.  I know I was sad when the book was done and hope that Nigel will be writing more books like this one.

We give it 4 1/2 paws and suggest you sign up to win a copy for yourself and if you don’t, well then go buy a copy!

Last month, author Geoffrey Gluckman was a Guest Blogger here to tell us about his latest work, Murder of Sex.  I finally was able to work through my backlog and get to his book (too many books, not enough time).

murderofsex

Synopsis:

An incendiary tale of lust, passion, love, betrayal, and loss. Intimate sexual relationships may never be the same.

When Dr. Josh Flagon, a professor of literature at a moderate sized liberal arts Nevada university, is drawn to an irresistible co-ed, Rebecca Reaper, little does he know it will take him on a lustful, passionate, life-changing ride. It will also jeopardize all that he values—his career—and all that he seeks—freedom.

While teaching classes and writing, Flagon uncovers a secret that boils beneath his cool, scholarly veneer. Rebecca, a brilliant student and sensual siren, reveals that mystery and much more to the professor through their passionate tryst. But at what price?

While the couple vacation on a secluded Hawaiian Island, a mysterious incident occurs that further challenges their relationship. From that point, Flagon’s life spirals out of control until be-friended by the unlikely, yet ever-wise Puerto Rican gangster, Jorge Luis Juarez.

In a haunting tale that weaves the literary with street smarts, passion with desolation, imprisonment with emancipation, and the desires of mankind with its origins, there thrives something to savor for every adult who has entered the intimate relationship arena and sought deeper answers to life’s questions.

This is one story that will make some gasp, many others smile, and take you into realms beyond.

Review:

I’m not sure what I was expecting but this was a pretty intense book.  I did have to read the first chapter twice to try and figure out what he was trying to impart to the reader.  I ended up giving up and moved on.  Once I did that and got into the heart of the story it picked up and I enjoyed it more.  The story reminded me a little bit of Fatal Attraction – the obsession and the jealousy.   As I was reading I kept wondering why Josh was in jail.  What did he do that landed him there and why was he getting out (besides for good behavior)?  The characters are gripping and you aren’t sure who to like and who to hate.

There are quite a few F* bombs, but in most places it was appropriate (jail scenes) and it seemed to fit in other situations, but still a heavy use of the word. Also quite a few sex scenes but it fit in with the storyline. (just a heads up if you don’t like that sort of thing in your book)

The book is less than 200 pages but it sure does pack a lot into them!

We give it 4 paws and hope you’ll give this book a chance next time you are looking for a suspenseful book.
