There are all types of reading material out there for us to enjoy and Poetry is one of them.  I will admit I am usually not big on poetry…well mainly because I don’t get it!  Sure I get the concept but it has never resonated with me but that is ok because I know there are plenty of people that do like poetry and that is what makes this a great world, we don’t all have to like the same thing!

So today I’d like to spotlight some poetry by author Theodore Ficklestein and his book, This Book Needs a Title.

Front Cover

Theodore was also kind enough to share one of his poems with us and you can also read some of them in the preview on Amazon or on Barnes & Noble.

Promoting a Poetry Book

You are promoting a poetry book.
Good luck with that.
Because so many read poetry.
I keep forgetting.
And you are like Bill Shakespeare right?
Everyone will just love your poetry because you are just so good at writing it.
Seriously I just may start calling you Robert Frost.
Yeah.
Okay.
You wrote a poetry book.
What happened you never finished that novel you were writing?
You are a no name author writing in a genre no one reads.
Good luck with that.

If you like this poem, check out his blog for more poems and you can buy his book on Amazon and Barnes and Noble or through Authorhouse

Above Rubies

His chivalry was strangling her.

He thought he was helping her—and in truth, he was. She was in desperate straits. But as honorable as he was, he was also breaking her heart.

Her attraction was drowning him.

When World Champion rodeo cowboy Rossen Rockland and his friends rescue a young runaway who has been abused by her foster father and take her home to his parents’ ranch, he expects her to turn out to be a pain in the neck. And sometimes she is.

It doesn’t take him long to figure out that she has way more than her allotment of troubles—and far more than her share of gifts. Lovely, talented, and ravingly brilliant, Kit Star is too young, unbelievably humble, and oh, so loveable. Knowing that she needs his protection and time to grow into her potential, Rossen also figures out that what she really is, is a pain in the heart.

Watch for more of the Rockland Ranch Series!

Review:

I really enjoyed this book!  I did read Peace River first (I’m just funny that way about series) but this definitely could have been read on its own…some of it at the beginning just made a little more sense since I had just finished book 1.   These books are tied to the Mormon faith, but I found it interesting since I like learning about other faiths and what they believe.  I thought it was a good tie in because it showed that the Rockland family had high morals and ethics because of their faith and they didn’t mind sharing that belief with others, including those with no faith.  The only part I found somewhat unbelievable was all these creative talents that Kit has – she creates beautiful sculptures that amaze everyone, she can play anything on the guitar after hearing it once and has an amazing voice….and she is only 18.  Oh and a photographic memory.  But despite that, I still enjoyed these stories and can’t wait to see if writes a story about Joey, I’m almost willing to bet she is next!

We loved these books and give them 4 1/2 paws

Peace River (Book 1)

The police didn’t understand the danger, but she did. Her father had always been abusive, but now, with a ten million dollar Thoroughbred farm on the line, and a powerful bookie leaning on him, her father had become out of control. But how do you get away and take a world famous stallion with you? Carrie was getting desperate when a handsome and honorable but thoroughly cynical rodeo cowboy from Wyoming happened to show up with a horse trailer. He didn’t ride a white horse, but he was definitely a knight in shining armor.

He’ll protect her from the mob, but can she survive falling in love with a bull rider?

 Review:

This first book in the series kept me on the edge of my seat!  A brilliant combination of romance and suspense.  I’d recommend reading this one before Above Rubies, but you don’t have to…..unless you like Above Rubies and then maybe some things will be given way if you go back and read this one afterwards.

Yesterday Locket Tour

Tour Schedule

Yesterday

Her yesterday was five years ago. What will her tomorrow bring?

When Hannah Kraeger saves a family injured in a car accident, she has no idea she has changed events in the past. Waking the next morning, Hannah discovers her yesterday was really five years ago.

Each trip Hannah takes through time changes the timeline and her own life. With help from Dr. Seth McAllister, Hannah must unravel the mystery of why she time travels and who she actually is before the strange ability costs her future, the man she loves, and even her life.

YESTERDAY is a thrilling Christian Romantic Suspense filled with unexpected twists, mystery, and romance.

Excerpt

Rounding the corner of the hallway to the medical offices, I stopped mid-stride.

“What’s wrong?” Seth asked, concerned.

I pointed. “The medical offices should be right there.”

Instead of a hallway that opened up to a reception area surrounded by doctors’ offices, I was pointing to a solid wall.

I turned around in a full circle. I had an awful sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach as I began to notice other differences. The paint on the walls looked dingy, the tile old, and the pictures on the wall cheap.

“Seth, none of this is right,” I mumbled, nervously fingering Mom’s locket clasped around my neck.

The feeling of dread was rapidly transforming into panic. Nothing was as it should be.

Then I knew.

My mind swirled with everything that had just happened. My eyes swung to Seth’s confused gaze and locked. In that instant, I knew two things. The man I loved, loved me back. And, wherever, whenever I was, he had come with me.

The Locket

Hannah suddenly finds that she has time traveled once again, but this time is different. After helping save a woman’s life, Hannah discovers that she has completely altered the timeline and thrown her very existence into jeopardy.

Facing life-threatening effects upon returning to her own time, Hannah is then given a death sentence: if she time travels again, she will die. Now, Hannah must solve the clues to her own identity and find a way to save her own life before she is once again sent spiraling through time.

Will her mother’s locket hold the key to both her past and her future? Has she just found the love of her life only to lose him? Could God have a plan for Hannah amidst the chaos?

Excerpt

I opened my mouth to ask my guide a question, I wasn’t even sure what, but I felt like I didn’t even know which end was up. Before my mouth and my brain could connect, there was a loud buzzing noise and the double doors in front of us opened.

“Go ahead,” my guide said. “Dr. Blake will meet you down the hall.”

Shouldn’t I protest that there’d been some mistake? Shouldn’t I beg for her to please tell me what was going on? But, I didn’t. Completely dazed, I put one foot in front of the other and went through the doors.

“Oh, Hannah?” At the woman’s voice, I turned back around. She looked directly at me, and I saw a full view of her face for the first time. There was something about her that was familiar, as if I should know her but couldn’t reach back far enough to remember her name.

Her sad eyes were sparkling with what looked like a hint of amusement, and a smile was on her lips. “Say ‘yes.’”

Before I could respond, the doors automatically shut, separating us. Starting to continue down the hall, I suddenly whirled back and faced the doors. Hannah! She’d called me Hannah!

I wanted to run back and pound on the doors until they opened and the mysterious woman gave me some answers. I was instead distracted by footsteps coming from the other direction of the long hall. A small woman with bright red hair and dressed in a white lab coat approached me.

Extending her hand to take mine, she smiled, “You must be Esther Jefferies.”

I opened my mouth in denial, but, suddenly remembering the words of my mysterious guide, I found myself replying. “Yes . . . Yes, I am.”

Review

I loved these two books!  I’m not 100% sure why they are categorized Christian because there is very little reference to religion or God in these books.  But that doesn’t matter because these were great stories!  I loved the time traveling aspect and how one little thing changed the past and Hannah’s life.  I liked all of the characters, although Seth could be a little over protective.  Sure Hannah is younger but she isn’t fragile.  I liked how the different supporting characters changed throughout the books based on where in time she went and what she changed.  I don’t want to give too much away!

When I finished the 2nd book I was hoping that wasn’t all and at the end I found a preview of the next book called Tomorrow….just what I need, another book on my TBR shelf!  But I have to find out how the story ends.

We give this 4 1/2 paws.

Although I loved my job as an elementary school teacher, I am now very blessed to be mommy to three adorable little boys and living my dream of being an author.
I have a vivid imagination and have always been easily entertained by the stories in my head. Fortunately, I also love to paint those pictures with words. I like writing a wide variety of genres, and my current book list includes everything from a Christian time travel / romance series, to an action-packed suspense, to a romance involving a woman who likes to anonymously play matchmaker.

Although I enjoy historical, Christian, paranormal, suspense, and everything in between, my books all have one thing in common–I love to surprise my readers with the unexpected. I currently have 7 books available for kindle, nook, and paperback.

A BLUE MOON TOUR BANNER

Synopsis:

Lorrie Duncan, an abstract painter working as a substitute teacher, dreams of making it big in the art world when she’s not busy looking for Mr. Right. She seems on the verge of getting what she wants, at least with respect to her career, because her current boyfriend Marty is a rising star in the L.A. art scene. But when a fortuneteller gives her a medallion with malevolent powers, her life and plans fall apart. Now to survive, she finds herself in a race to discover its secret, before it destroys everything she holds dear.

A Blue Moon is Vanessa A. Ryan’s first novel, a genre-bending literary urban fantasy.

Excerpt:

Madam Grace leaned back in annoyance. “Give me your watch,” she said.

Finding this alarming, I hesitated, wondering if she was going to steal it. But I gave it to her.

She held it to her cheek and closed her eyes. She said, “You are in a state of––how you say?—dull, mediocre. But that will not last. You––”

The doorbell rang and she got up. “Excuse me,” she said. “I must get that. Make yourself comfortable until I return.” Seeing my dismay, she smiled. “Don’t worry. I won’t be long.”

After she left, I peered out the window. A young, sallow complexioned man with dark hair stood on the porch.

I heard Grace speak loudly to him in a language I didn’t recognize. He answered her in that same language. Something about their conversation—not to mention the heat in the room—and the fact that she still had my watch, made me uneasy. It wasn’t because I thought she was after my money or that he might be in on it. That was a given. No, it was something I couldn’t put my finger on. I knew I should have run out then, watch or not, but moments later the woman came back, and it was too late.

“I am sorry you have been waiting.”

“No problem.”

She sat down, closed her eyes, and again pressed my watch to her cheek. Then she opened her eyes and gave me back my watch. Taking a deep breath, she said, “I see that your boyfriend is crude––not civilized.”

“That’s him, all right.”

“He has strange habits. Why do you put up with him? Why don’t you find someone better?”

I sighed. “I don’t know. I’m lonely. I can’t seem to find anyone else. I guess I like having him around and he said he would help me with my career. I like him, though he’s not what you’d call a good catch in the normal sense. What else do you see? Will I marry him? Will he help me with my career?”

“I see that you don’t really know men. You let them treat you like dirt.” She looked down at the cards. “It is because you never knew your father.”

Maybe she was psychic. “That’s true. My father died when I was a kid.”

“Beware. I see danger around you. There is a plot against you. For another fifty dollars, I will pray for you at the church in the mountains. Only I can break this dangerous spell.”

I knew I should have known better. But I was determined to get my money’s worth. “Well, I have only the fifty for the reading. What about my career? I’m an artist. Is my boyfriend going to help me with my career? He has a lot of connections.”

She gave me an annoyed look. “Just keep painting, or whatever it is you do.”

Abruptly, she got up and went to the cardboard box. She took the lid off, reached in and pulled out a small blue velvet pouch. “I’m going to give you something to help you. It’s something I wouldn’t give to just anyone. It will bring you good luck. It is a medallion to wear around your neck.”

She took a necklace out of the box and held it up so I could see it. The medallion was large and irregular in shape. It looked cheap. Fake gold, most likely, and not worth more than a few dollars. The inscription on it was in some ancient language, probably Arabic. The chain, made of the same cheap gold, was much too long for it. It would probably hang down below my waist.

“Here, take it. Put it on.” She dangled it before me. Then she looked away as if she hated to part with it.

“Oh, I couldn’t take this,” I said. “It looks too expensive. I can’t afford to buy it from you either.”

“Please. I want you to have it. For your safety. There is a terrible plot against you.” She held the medallion close to my face. “But if you wear it,” she continued, “you will have nothing but good luck from now on.”

She pressed the medallion into my hand. “Tomorrow night is the blue moon. If you put this on now, your good luck will begin with the blue moon. Take it. It’s your only chance. Since you don’t have the money for me to pray to the church in the mountains, take it. For free. I am only trying to help you.”

Interview with Vanessa:

What inspired you to write this book?

I was recovering from an illness, and writing A Blue Moon was a way to make sense out of my situation.

What background gave you the experience to write this novel?

A Blue Moon takes place primarily in Venice, California, where lived for about nine years. I had read Ray Bradbury’s Death in a Lonely Business and it inspired me to use Venice as a setting for my novel. I am a painter and sculptor, so it was easy for me to use my experiences in the art world as a backdrop. At one time, I also worked as a substitute teacher.

Is this autobiographical?

Not really. The one thing that remotely relates to me is I was a long-term substitute teacher in art, and the school I worked for filled my position with a permanent teacher. Rather than lay me off, they switched me to the English department, though I didn’t have a credential in that subject. And because test scores were low, I suggested at a staff meeting that we teach grammar. Although everyone groaned, because grammar is boring to kids, the principal agreed to offer a mini-course in it, but only in summer school, and only for the smartest students.

 When did you start writing?

I started writing in the early 1990s.

Today I bring you a different type of guest post, or a different type of book than I normally post about!  For those that know me personally, I am NOT in the midst of a divorce or even thinking about it!  However, I do believe in women being prepared should the “D” word ever happen in their lives.  These aren’t the days of our parents where the men mostly controlled the finances, however there are still some marriages where the men does control everything and these are the ones where the women need to be protected.  Even if you share everything, divorce can be hard and as Jeff will tell you, it also becomes very emotional and sometimes we don’t think logically.

So with that said, I welcome Jeff Landers to StoreyBook Reviews!

Every Year, One Million Women Get Divorced . . .

Divorce: Think Financially, Not Emotionally®  What Women Need to Know About Securing Their Financial Future Before, During and After  Divorce

Divorce is an emotional rollercoaster. . .

. . . And if you’re a woman who’s going through or about to go through a divorce, you need to be keenly aware of this.

People tend to make absolutely terrible financial decisions when they’re on that rollercoaster, feeling ”up” one minute and then “down” the next.

Of course, under the circumstances, a measure of indecision and confusion is completely understandable. If you’re in the early stages of divorce, you’re probably experiencing anger, betrayal, loss, shock, numbness, confusion, panic –or a combination of them all. It’s no real surprise that you may not be able to think clearly about financial matters such as how your assets might get divided, tax liabilities and what your living expenses might be ten years from now.

But, here’s the problem:

When you’re divorcing, you simply cannot risk being uninformed, indecisive or bewildered about your finances. After all, the decisions you make both before and during your divorce will directly impact the rest of your life, for better or for worse.

If you proceed with your divorce carelessly and/or impulsively—allowing misinformation, rage, revenge, bitterness, depression, a lack of knowledge or a sense of futility to guide your decisions—the outcome can, and probably will, be financially disastrous.

On the other hand, if you proceed thoughtfully and with a strategic plan, you may find your divorce offers you the opportunity to lock in a secure financial future.

The choice is yours, and the difference lies in how you handle the process . . . and whether or not you can Think Financially, Not Emotionally®.

Someone once said that marriage is all about love, and divorce is all about money. She was right. And when you’re going through divorce, you must keep your emotions in check, so you can negotiate a divorce settlement that financially protects you and your children both now and far into the future.

Unfortunately, thinking financially is not always easy — and this is true no matter how astute you were under previously “normal” circumstances. Many of our clients at Bedrock Divorce Advisors are accountants, lawyers, Wall Street executives and business owners, some with Ivy League MBAs. These women know how to crunch numbers — but during the trauma of divorce, they just aren’t able to focus and deal with financial matters.

No, thinking financially is not always easy. But, it is possible –especially if you have some help. Anyone, no matter how savvy, can benefit from expert advice when she is crossing through treacherous and unfamiliar territory. This book is a guidebook to help you navigate that difficult terrain.

Throughout the following chapters, I’ve compiled important information to help you better understand how to:

• Shore up your financial position so you enter the divorce process prepared;

• Gather your important financial documents and records;

• Build a top-notch divorce team;

• Determine the value of a small business or professional practice;

• Decide between regular alimony and an up-front lump-sum alimony payment;

• Keep your marital house (if it makes financial sense to do so);

• Get the child support you’re owed;

• Avoid the top mistakes divorcing women make;

• Understand the difference between marital and separate property;

• Protect any alimony and/or child support payments with life insurance;

• Protect your business, intellectual property and personal assets;

• Divide your assets in a way most favorable to you from a tax and financial point of view;

• Deal with pensions plans, 401(k)s, and other retirement accounts;

• Decide whether to legally separate or divorce;

• Disinherit your husband;

• Determine if your husband is hiding assets;

. . . and much more.

Ultimately, your goal should be to emerge from your divorce in the best financial shape possible. You’re going to get off that emotional rollercoaster eventually. And when you do, you’ll want to begin your single life knowing that you have made the thoughtful decisions required to help establish your long-term financial security.

Start today. Let me help you Think Financially, Not Emotionally® as you look ahead to a bright future for yourself and your children.

Today I welcome Jen Greyson, author of a fascinating new book called Lightning Rider.  She is here to tell us about this new genre that I see all the time with book review requests but was afraid to ask!  So on with Jen’s post!

A huge thank you to Leslie here at StoreyBook Reviews for letting me come visit. Today I wanted to talk about this new genre popping up everywhere, new adult.

What the Heck Is New Adult?

There’s a lot of excitement surrounding the newest genre to hit the shelves, but it’s leaving some readers confused as to what new adult really means. Is it YA with sex? Is it YA with old people?

New adult is a little bit of both, and a lot of neither. NA is to YA what YA is to MG (GAH! Jr. high math!)

New adult is similar to young adult in that the characters are still dealing with firsts. YA characters are dealing with first kisses, first cars, first jobs, first betrayals. In NA the stakes are higher because the characters are older. NA characters are now dealing with life during or after college, first place, first “real” relationship, first step toward a career. Now the repercussions of choices are bigger, the stakes are larger. Skipping a day of work holds more weight than skipping a day of school. Sex does show up in NA books, but it’s not the focus. Characters are maturing, they’ve moved out of puberty and realize they’re on the cusp of adulthood. One of my favorite parts of writing and reading new adult is that these characters have the world at their feet. Life is full of endless possibilities and they’re no longer hampered by the restraints of high school and parents. Most of them have “left the nest” for the first time and they’re now responsible for their own choices. Sometimes they make good choices, a lot of times they make bad ones..and now those bad ones have serious repercussions.

Young adult characters are usually between the ages of 12-18, but are classified more by the issues they’re dealing with, same goes for NA. The NA characters are usually older—18-26, but some YA books can cross-over into NA based on what, and more importantly, how, the characters are dealing with issues.

To learn more about NA and find some amazing reads, there are a couple of great resources. Goodreads has a New Adult Book Club and NA Alley is a great site to find some fantastic reads as well.

My new adult fantasy, Lightning Rider, released May 31 and features a Latina who had her life all figured out until she claimed her birthright as a time traveler. Now she’s battling the repercussions of her future-altering power as it affects her business, her family, and your future.

Heiress to a time-traveling dynasty, Evy Rivera is finally claiming her birthright as a lightning rider. Problem is, she’s forced to learn it alongside Constantine, a prickly, obstinate Roman warrior who constantly challenges her to be the woman he sees in her.

Thrown back into ancient Spain, Evy must rely on guts and instinct to wield her lightning as a weapon and outsmart Ilif, her quasi-mentor who believes time traveling should be left to the Rivera men.

During her training, Evy and Constantine battle the push-pull of their explosive relationship, aware the 2,000-year span between their lives is an unavoidable hurdle.

Caught between a centuries-old battle rife with secrets, Evy must learn whom to trust before she risks everything and the wrong history repeats itself. When the heritage her parents have suppressed mingles with the past, Evy must find answers . . .

Which history is the right one? And who is she becoming?
