15 minutes cover

Synopsis:

I have 15 minutes to save my mother’s life….

15 minutes is all the Rewind Agency gives you in the past, but for Lara Crane it’s enough time to race through the city, find her mother, and stop her from being killed in a mugging that happened over ten years ago.

But that’s not how it happened. The story she’s been told all her life is a lie and when Lara takes a bullet meant for her mother, her future changes forever.

The love of her life acts like a stranger. Her simple life is replaced with a giant house, glamorous clothes and a new boyfriend.

Except someone knows her secret. And he will try to stop her at every turn as she races against the clock to unravel a dangerous conspiracy.

15 Minutes is an edgy high octane YA thriller that can be described as Back to the Future meets Inception where the people Lara trusts change in an instant. She is in a timeline she doesn’t understand, and is about to make one fatal mistake as she faces an enemy so familiar, he’s family.

Excerpt:

Locker 63.

My eyes sweep aisle after aisle until I find the one I’m looking for. It’s blue and unassuming, but it could unlock the secret to everything. I lick my lips as I insert the key, close my eyes, and with a prayer, twist.

Click.

The door opens, and inside I find more than documents. There’s also a pink hoodie, a duffle bag, and a fresh change of clothes.

What was I preparing for? What was I doing? I open the manila envelope on the bottom and flip through the documents—a lot of reports, surveillance photos, old newspaper clippings. I don’t have time to go through all of it now, so I stash them in my duffle bag and throw on some new clothes.

A tight-fitting t-shirt, pink hoodie, and comfortable blue jeans are my new outfit. It’s a weird choice for trendy, sophisticated Lara, but she was up to something big. Real big.

I lift the hidden duffle bag out of the locker, surprised at how hefty it is. I unzip it and find money inside. A lot of money. I touch it. Must be thousands of dollars bound together in neat little stacks.

My heart quickens as I wonder where it came from and what I was planning to do with it. If ever there was a moment for a flashback, it’s now. A shining blue cell phone at the bottom of the duffle bag catches my attention. I pull it out and see a note stuck to it. In my handwriting.

Hide in the shower. Move fast.

Wide eyed and with a pounding heart, I slam the locker, grab everything, and run down the hall. I turn into the showers and duck into a stall, the vinyl shower curtain flapping against me. I still it with trembling fingers as I hear heavy steps enter the locker room.

Review:

This is one action packed book!  I never expected to be drawn in to the action, the characters and the storyline, or at least not to the degree that I was!  And while this book may be YA I think it will appeal to a LOT of readers out there, not just kids.  I read along thinking that the story was one thing, and then BAM, the author hits you with a twist in the story….and then BAM, another twist!  You definitely cannot guess what is going to happen next with Lara.  I think she is a good, strong character and handles a lot for her young age.  Her character shows to be more mature than you would expect.  And all of this because she wanted to save her mother from dying.

We give this book 4 1/2 paws and highly recommend picking it up next time you are looking for an action packed book.

I could write this in the third person. I could tell you what I like, where I was born, and what my favorite things are.

But instead, I’ll say I don’t want to write like everyone else. I don’t want to craft stories you’ve read a thousand times before. I want my novels to be a cinematic experience, blending themes, genres, and situations unlike any you’ve ever read.

I want to break the rules. I want you to break out in a cold sweat as you read my books out of fear, love, and excitement. I want my books to be an experience. When you finish, I want you to feel something. Good or bad.  If you do, then I’ll have succeeded. If not, I’ll keep trying.

Book Description:

Sometimes, even the best-laid plans can unravel.

It’s spring break, and Tamara Winters would rather stay on campus and read romance novels than flaunt her size-fourteen body on a beach. But her best friend, Ronni, has other ideas. Against her wishes, Tamara is whisked away to picturesque Maverick Bay, where she’s wrangled into waiting tables with Ronni at the Shore Shack for its busy week leading to Maverick’s Surf Invitational. There she meets fellow schoolmate Xavier Solomon, the Invitational’s organizer and campus womanizer by reputation. From the moment Tamara sees him emerging from the waves like a hero in of one of her romance novels, all she wants to do is run away from the feelings he inspires in her.

Little does she know Xavier has been watching her for weeks now. In fact, after failed attempts at asking her out on campus, he’s concocted a crazy plan: fabricating romantic situations straight out of her favorite books. Xavier quickly realizes that if Tamara gets a whiff of his designs, he might as well spell CREEPER across his forehead. Yet as they grow closer, he’s convinced it’s a risk worth taking. What he hasn’t planned on, of course, is his drug-addicted, alcoholic stepbrother, who decides to join the fun and put a wrench in Xavier’s scheme.

Spring break is proving hotter than Tamara expected. Will her romance novels be able to compete?

Review:

This was such a fun read!  Tamara is a self-proclaimed bookworm (reading up to 3 books per day!  boy wish I had that kind of time) but life is passing her by because she can’t see past the pages in the book because of a trauma when she was younger.  However, she goes on Spring Break with her roommate Ronnie and is treated to a whole new world that has her realizing that maybe all this time spent wrapped in books isn’t such a good thing.  Of course this is all a set up by Xavier because he wanted to get to know her and previous efforts weren’t working.

I liked how the story went back and forth between Tamara and Xavier’s view points.  You could see how she was feeling and what she was thinking in different situations.  The same goes for Xavier.  Plus I think it also gives the reader more of an insight into the characters.  I also liked that Tamara is a curvy female and a size 14.  Not all women are thin but they do find love no matter their body size.

We give this 4 paws and if you are looking for a good beach read, pick this book up!  Doesn’t hurt that they spend lots of time on a beach because of a surfing invitational!

Author Stefan Kanfer is back with his second book in this series called The Eskimo Hunts in Miami.  I read and reviewed the first book, The Eskimo Hunts in New York and found it to be quite suspenseful and a good read.

A few months back I highlighted a book that author Shawna Seed sent me to read and review called Identity.  I finally worked my way (a little bit) through that massive TBR pile and got to this book.  Wish I had gotten to it sooner!

identityshawnaseed

Synopsis:

Sharlah Webb thinks her luck is finally turning, until her boyfriend, Brian, is jailed on drug charges. Now a hurricane is bearing down, she’s broke, and Brian’s secrets have put them both in danger. Can she trust Brian? The police? Sharlah begins her own search for answers, launching a mystery that will take years to unravel. Identity: A novel of suspense, love and finding your true self.

Review:

I enjoyed this book a lot!  You get to see Brian and Sharlah’s story from teens (17+) to later in life.  The story does have something of an abrupt ending and it leaves you wondering how some things turn out. That can either be a really good thing or a bad thing, guess it depends on how you like the story to end. I think it does leave it open for a sequel should the author choose to follow up and let us know how certain situations were resolved.  I found myself rooting for different characters and hoping that all would turn out well.  You don’t really know until the end how things will truly play out which I think is a good thing.  I couldn’t guess how the book would turn out.

There were a few editing type things that could have made the flow better. At one point the story switches from Sharlah’s point of view to Brian’s. At this point it is 4 years later but it takes a few pages to realize that it is 4 years later. Then it switches to another person’s point of view and that is about 10 years later. Also the chapters were really really long.

Aside from those 2 things, I thought the book was written very well and I was able to feel the emotions of the characters.  We give it 4 paws.

Ixeos Rebellion

With rebel leader Darian free at last, the humans and outsiders on Ixeos must find a way to join forces and defeat the Firsts. The problem? All slaves are tracked with GPS, the Firsts are the only ones with power, and roving gangs hate the rebels just as much as they hate the aliens. As Darian and the outsiders from Earth travel the globe through the mysterious tunnels in Paris, they learn that the Firsts are preparing to launch another wave of biological warfare. With a transporter that will allow the aliens to target any city, anywhere on the planet, the rebels know they must stop them at all costs.

As things get more dangerous on Ixeos, the outsiders find that they’re pushed to their limit. Will they fight for freedom, no matter the price?

Ixeos

The McClellands are enjoying a lazy summer vacation at the beach when they are lured from our world into Ixeos, an alternate Earth. Finding themselves lost in a maze of tunnels under Paris and surrounded by strangers, they discover that they have been brought to Ixeos for one purpose: to take the planet back from humanoid aliens who have claimed it. With the aid of the tunnels and a mysterious man named Landon, the teens travel the world seeking the key that will allow them to free Darian, the long-imprisoned rebel leader. But the aliens aren’t the only problem on Ixeos — the McClellands have to deal with brutal gangs, desperate junkies, and a world without power, where all the technology is owned by the aliens, and where most of the population has been killed or enslaved. The worst part? There’s no way home.

Excerpt

He rested his hands on her shoulders, but didn’t say anything.

“This is where I make my stand,” she told him. “If I don’t, I know I’ll regret it for the rest of my life. I have a chance to make a difference, to get justice for Philip.”

He let out a breath. “I know about wanting to make a difference, but what if you don’t make it out? Is it worth your life?” He gently turned her around to face him. “Because I don’t know if it is.”

She held her hand to his cheek, her brown eyes intense and searching his face. Putting a hand at the back of her neck, he pulled her to him, brushing his lips over hers. Her arms slid around his neck and she melted into his arms. His feelings that he hadn’t consciously admitted he had for her surged to the surface and his mouth pressed into hers, no longer gentle. She responded with just as much fire and Colby could barely suppress a groan. His hand slipped to her back, running the length of it. His entire body felt like there was nothing else, just her, and without her there was nothing.

Review:

This is not a very long book, I think I read it in about an hour….but don’t let the length fool you.  I was amazed at the amount of mystery and suspense that was in this book!  Lily meets a handsome man in the coffee shop and things seem too good to be true.  At the same time, a co-worker insists she is someone names Laurel and she thinks he must be delusional (and crazy!).  There are a lot of clues along the way to tip you off to what might be happening but they weren’t all obvious to me…maybe I just preferred enjoying the book versus trying to solve the mystery.  I thought the writing was well executed and I will definitely take a look for more of Fran’s books.

sweptupby the sea

Synopsis:

Determined to seek his fortune, Percival Taylor leaves behind his sleepy hometown and sets out to become a legendary pirate—only no one at the roguish seaport of Blackshore will allow him any- where near a ship!

Percival must find other means to win the heart of the beautiful Tuppence Magrathia-Paddock, who has mistaken him for a pirate rogue out of one of her romantic tales. She is entirely willing to swoon into his arms if he can prove his buccaneer soul—and she is willing to arrange her own kidnapping to prove it.

Percival eventually finds himself captain of a broken-down ship, complete with a crew of pirates who make their living selling fake treasure maps, a jilted fiancee, a reclusive Master Shipwright, and an old professor with a secret that could kill them all. It’s Pirates of Penzance meets Princess Bride as this motley group of characters sets sail for treasure and romance.

Review:

I have to agree 100% with the comment above that it is the Pirates of Penzance meet Princess Bride!  This isn’t your boring historical romance novel, there is a lot of humor with a little bit of fantasy thrown into the mix.  There is a great cast of characters, each with their own issues that managed to get resolved by the end of the book.  I don’t want to say too much and spoil the book but I don’t think you would be disappointed if you picked up this book to read.

We give it 4 1/2 paws, I think these authors have a hit on their hands.
