Cerberus: Book 1 of Parish by P.K. Gallagher

Paranormal YA Fantasy

For Kaeden Parish, life in Solace has always followed certain rules—everything makes sense, everything can be planned for, and everything is as it seems. Unfortunately, the secret harbored by his gorgeous, albeit guarded girlfriend is about to shatter all of that. After a successful attack on his life opens his eyes to a world of war, shadows, and supernatural creatures—a world he didn’t plan for—Kaeden finds himself resembling the sort of monster he has always feared. As he desperately struggles to resist a new temptation, danger draws ever nearer, threatening the ones he loves most. A prophecy tells of a final battle and great destruction, and Kaeden must decide which side he is on, a choice that could mean the end of the world. In Book 1 of the Solace Series, P.K. Gallagher pulls readers into a realm where good and evil are at war, and the outcome of it all rests on one young man’s decision to either go and live…or stay and die. This is where the story of Parish begins.

Goodlookin Man copy

Tour Schedule

A Good-Lookin’ Man by Marcia Lynn McClure

Excerpt

However, in an instant—in less than a breath or the bat of an eyelid—the elusive pepper spray hiding somewhere in her purse was all but forgotten. For standing before her—right there before her, not three feet away—was the best-looking, most gorgeous, handsomest man she had ever seen in all her life!

“No, seriously,” she thought out loud with lingering bewilderment at how perfectly stunning the man standing before her was, wearing a worn pair of Levi’s, dusty cowboy boots, and a short-sleeved, plaid-print, snap-up shirt that hung open, revealing a bronzed, perfectly sculpted torso that was simply a mass of muscles. She was so unsettled by the man’s appearance that she wasn’t sure whether she was whispering aloud to herself or her car.

Either way, the man asked, “Beg your pardon, ma’am?”

“Oh…oh, nothing,” Fairlee said as she began rummaging in her purse again. But the man’s presence and appearance had entirely rattled her. As her awe-inspired brain obviously quit sending out instructions to the rest of her body, Fairlee felt her purse slip from her hands—watched in humiliated dismay as its contents tumbled out and scattered over the shoulder of the road.

Review

I just LOVED this novella!  It was funny and sweet and reminded me why I enjoy clean romances so much…the story is more about the people and their relationship and not so much what happens in the bedroom.  I love Fairlee – she is such a sweet and innocent character and isn’t afraid to speak her mind…even when she doesn’t mean to say things out loud.  Lash is the sexy vet who apparently doesn’t mind going around with his shirt unbuttoned!  No wonder Fairlee has a hard time believing that he is a vet and not a Chippendales dancer!  I found myself sometimes relating to Fairlee and how she viewed the world, with such optimism.

We give this 5 paws and highly recommend it to anyone looking for an uplifting story.

John William and the Quest for Copia

John William knew there was something special about the medallion Celeste found. It chimed and sparkled in the sunlight. He was right; the medallion was from Copia, a lost city masked in time. Legendary tales were repeated of a golden city inhabited by Empyrean Wizards that was suddenly plagued by greed and gluttony when a meager fledgling magician by the name of Imperius the Great wandered in. Some did not believe the city ever existed; others who knew better wanted it to stay lost.

John William and Celeste were more than ready for another adventure. The search for Copia seemed to be a perfect opportunity. They were unaware of the dangers until it was too late. Shadow jumpers emerged and grew rapidly in numbers. They wanted the medallion; its power would bring the lost city to life again, unlocking the dark past dormant with in its walls. The young explorers were in a mess of trouble. If they did not fix things fast, Copia’s pestilence of wild creatures would be set free to stir up an evil capable of destroying the realm.

John William and the Bandits of Basswood

We already know Alexander Drake’s story. His father, John William started it all years before when he entered Azra’s Pith. This is his story. John William was born an explorer; just like his dad before him. His adventure really began with the worst year of his life. He lived everyday in misery until his twelfth birthday. He set out to turn things around and find his smile again. A new friend gave him an invitation he could not turn down… follow me and change your destiny. He never imagined being captured by bandits and taken to a ship riddled with river rats was part of his fate. Not just any bandits – the Bandits of Basswood; known to be a ruthless and wild crew of thieves. Trying to escape would be a ridiculous idea. No one has ever escaped and lived to tell about it. Someone should have mentioned that to John William before he snuck off the ship. The chase out of Basswood was on. He took a chance to change his destiny and ended up on a wild ride to save his life.

Gage McKenna has taken a summer-long stint leading adventure excursions for the passengers of various cruise lines that dock for a few days of sightseeing. Excerpt

He answered his cell on the third ring, irritated at the intrusion. “This better be important.”

“We’ve got a situation,” Jeremy said.

He stood and stalked away from the bed. “I thought you were handling the situation.” Isn’t that what Jeremy had promised—to take care of his mistake?

“I was,” Jeremy mumbled. “I am, but . . .”
“But?”
“We’ve hit a complication.”
There’s a shock. It was always something with Jeremy.

Why he’d trusted him to run things this long . . . That was his mistake. “What kind of complication?” He retrieved his whiskey glass from the wet bar.

“Someone sounded the man-overboard alarm.”
“Where are you?”
“There’s no need for you to come. Just tell me what to do.” “Obviously following orders isn’t your strong suit.” He finished his drink in a single draught, the golden liquid burning its way down his throat and spreading across his chest.

“But, boss . . .”

“Give me your coordinates. Now.” He kept his voice even, tight. No sense losing his temper until the matter at hand was resolved.

Jeremy gave up the coordinates.
“I’ll see you soon.” He cut off the call.

Review

This is the third book in the Alaskan Courage series and while could be read on its own, I highly recommend reading the first two books to get a sense of the characters and who they are and what they are all about.  I did not read the first two books and felt like I was missing some history of the characters.  I like Darcy’s character, she wasn’t willing to give up on her friend Abby and wanted to know what in the world happened to her and why she disappeared.  Gage has his own issues and those are conflicting with what he feels for Darcy.  There was quite a few references to prayer, God/being saved and other similar religious undertones.  IF this sort of thing would bother you, don’t pick up the book.  It didn’t bother me and was interesting to see how the beliefs of the different characters impacted how they acted and how they were portrayed.  The book does have quite a bit of suspense and you really aren’t sure who the “bad” guys are and I think some will surprise you!

Overall we give it 3 1/2 paws.  If you like romantic suspense, I think you might like this book.

Rocky Road

It was supposed to be a girls’ weekend in scenic St. George, Utah that would include shopping, trying out the local cuisine, and participating in a breast cancer fundraiser. The fact that one of the organizers of the fundraising event, a local doctor, disappeared two months ago was not supposed to be Sadie’s problem. In fact, she refuses to participate in the grassroots investigation her friend Caro, and Caro’s cousin, Tess, have put together prior to her arrival. But then she meets the ex-wife of the missing doctor. How could she not ask a few questions . . . that lead to a few more questions . . . that lead to a small town and yet even more questions. Before she knows it, Sadie is in the middle of yet another murder investigation and trying to piece together a convoluted trail of good intentions, hidden motivations, and philanthropy turned big business.

Excerpt

As soon as she stepped outside, the heat was forgotten due to the amazing smells coming from the two Dutch ovens. One had chicken and the other a potato type casserole. Sadie had to swallow in order to keep her enthusiasm in check. Really, her food obsessions were a bit out of hand.

“This is wonderful,” Sadie said after Paul slid into his seat at the head of the table. She’d already enjoyed a few bites of both the chicken and the potatoes. They were both delicious.

Paul grinned his appreciation for the compliment but said nothing, probably because his mouth was full. She waited for him to finish before asking about the recipe, which he said he’d be happy to share. Sadie would have to buy a Dutch oven and make it for Pete sometime. Maybe after they were married. Zing.

“Oh, I forgot the rolls.” Tess jumped up and headed for the kitchen, returning seconds later with a basket of rolls that completed the meal perfectly. Tess also put a small bowl of what looked like strawberry cream cheese in the center of the table.

“When we got married Paul’s mom gave me a whole cook book full of her families favorite recipes including this one,” Tess explained as she returned to her seat. “It’s from a restaurant called Maddox in Northern Utah—that’s where Paul’s from. They’re especially good with raspberry butter.”

Raspberry butter, not strawberry cream cheese.

Sadie was happy to give the rolls a sampling and spread both halves with a generous helping of the raspberry butter. “These are delicious,” Sadie said one bite later. “Is it a batter roll?” The roll was so light it couldn’t possibly be from a traditional kneaded dough.

“It is a batter roll. They’re my go-to roll recipe—so easy to whip up and so good. I’m glad you like them.”

Review

While this may be the 10th book in the series, this is only the 2nd book that I have read by Josi.  I will admit that I did not like the previous book, Baked Alaska, a whole lot.  It wasn’t bad, just wasn’t my favorite book.  But I always like to read a second book by authors just in case…and am I VERY glad that I did!  I LOVED this book!   I was on the edge of my seat trying to figure out what happened to the missing doctor and how Sadie was going to solve this one.  There were some good twists and turns and I never expected the book to turn out how it did.  I liked how Sadie tried to let the police solve the case…until they asked for her help.  I don’t think the police knew what they were getting in to when they asked for her help, but it is a good thing they did ask!

There are also some yummy recipes in this book, I might just have to try one out to see how it fares in my kitchen!

We give this book 5 paws and highly recommend it if you are a fan of cozies!

Author Joan Holub

I graduated from college in Texas with a fine arts degree, and then freelanced as an art director at a graphic design firm for eight years. I dreamed of working in children’s books, so I moved to New York City and became associate art director in Scholastic trade books, where I designed books for children and worked with editors and illustrators. It was a great job.

I illustrated my first published children’s book in 1992 and soon began illustrating full time. I began completing manuscripts and mailing them out to publishers in the early 1990s. In 1996, I sold my first two manuscripts — Boo Who? A Spooky Lift-the-Flap Book (Scholastic) and Pen Pals (Grosset & Dunlap). Yippee!

Now I write full time and have written and/or illustrated over 130 children’s books. Creating books that entertain, inform, and interest children (and me) is a fabulous job that I truly love.

Author Bio

I’ve always been an avid reader.  Majoring in English Literature was a no brainer.  Becoming a teacher and instilling my love for reading into my students was also a no brainer.  I’ve spent the last ten years teaching and I’ve loved (mostly) every minute of it.  When I was home on maternity leave for my third son, I discovered a new genre that sparked my creativity.  My passion for writing sprang from my love of reading and once I knew I had a story to tell, I couldn’t wait to get it out there.  I only hope that my readers enjoy reading my story as much as I enjoyed writing it.
