Synopsis

With six months until the Olympic Games, seventeen-year-old Harper’s life is pretty much perfect. She’s fighting for the starting spot on Team USA Women’s Hockey, and for the first time ever, she has a crush on a guy who likes her back. She feels like the luckiest girl in the world, until she runs a risky play at practice and breaks her knee, thereby sentencing herself to six weeks in a cast and possibly ending her Olympic dream before it even starts.

Harper

We finish a slow lap around the rink then I tell Rye I want to see him speed skate.

“It’s more impressive when I’m actually racing people.”

“That’s okay,” I say.

“You just want an excuse to look at my butt.”

“No. I’ll just race you then if you’re going to be like that.”

“You’ll still have a nice view of my butt.”

If I were in 100 percent health, I would have punched him in the arm and bolted off, not caring that his skates are better designed for racing, not to mention the years of experience he has, and I would have raced my heart out, but I’m not in 100 percent health. A dull ache crept its way into my knee on the second turn of our slow lap together. It’s not painful. It’s the weakness Tyler was talking about, but nevertheless, that ache is a reminder that comebacks are a multistep process.

Rye takes off, crossing his right leg over his left leg to turn the corner of the rink, picking up speed on the straights. When he passes me, a rush of wind follows him. He rounds the first turn again, fingertips brushing the surface of the ice, body at a 45-degree angle, so low to the ice that if it weren’t for his speed, he’d fall over, too much speed and he’d fall as well. I stand by the rink wall, and Rye whips by again, purposely getting close to me even though speed skaters normally try to stay as close to the inside of the track as possible.

“Show off!” I call, but he’s already coming out of the turn and probably can’t hear me.

Review

Podium Finish is a clean romance novel that had me on the edge of my seat.  The main focus of the story was several athletes and their quest to make it to the Olympics.  As I read this story, I wondered if Alex and Ace would do well in ice dancing. If Harper would make the women’s hockey team.  Plus there were trust issues between Alex and Ace.  Harper, although 17, finds love with Rye, another Olympic hopeful.

The author did a great job of making the reader feel the emotions of the characters.  As they were competing for Olympic spots, I would get nervous and wonder how they would score.  Would the ice dancers beat the others?  I definitely got caught up in the competition and hoped that it would all turn out for each individual.   To top it off, each character was either in their teens (still in high school) or not much older.  It is amazing what athletes will do for their sport!

We really enjoyed Podium Finish and give it 4 paws and recommend this book!

Beth Pond graduated summa cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa from Hendrix College in 2012. In 2013, she taught in South Africa for 9 months as part of a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship Grant. NBC called Greg Kihn “Rock’s True Renaissance Man” and for good reason. As part of the eponymous band he has: toured the globe, had hit records, been inducted into the San Jose Rock Hall Of Fame, opened for the Rolling Stones and jammed with Bruce Springsteen. Review

This is book #5 in the series. I have not read any of the previous 4 (but might have to now) so I was a little lost on how some of the relationships had developed, but the author does a good job of explaining how Shelby could now read minds and sort of filling in some gaps in the personal story. The actual mystery is self contained and could be read on its own. There is an interesting chemistry between Ramos and Shelby, but Shelby is married to Chris and he is a very supportive husband despite the pickles that Shelby finds herself in thanks to Uncle Joey.

It was a really good story and never would have guessed whodoneit. Well written and very fascinating. This is probably a very good series but start with book 1, not book 5 like I did!

Review

Great start to a new series. I love that the main character is a little older and curvy. I was curious how she could be single and not work but support herself, it was explained about halfway through the book. I don’t know how to quilt but always have been amazed by what I have seen and the amount of time it takes to put one together. There are great explanations about the quilting world.

I don’t know if I’m getting better at figuring out who the killer is, but I had a gut instinct and was glad to see I was right at the end. However, the reasoning was not one I would have expected so that was a nice twist!

Overall we give it 4 paws and if you like quilting and cozies, you will like this book!

Today I am featuring the first book in another cozy mystery cooking series…yes, I LOVE food and eating and reading about it.  Sometimes I think I should have been a chef…probably just a personal chef because doing it large scale in a restaurant is just mind blowing!

About the Author

Another winner of a book! I loved loved loved this story and how it tied in with the characters and storyline of Spare Change.   Paul just wants to look out for his sister and just happens to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.  Detective Gomez from Spare Change is out to make a name for himself after being made a fool and does not want to look beyond what he thinks are the facts.  Detective Mahoney knows that there is more to the story and is willing to do the digging that Gomez won’t, even though this is not in his district.  There are so many little things that just tie together in this book and to Spare Change that it is hard not to be drawn into the book!  Plus we get a little peek into what life was like for the miners and how hard it was on all of the families and what they had to do to survive.

I also love when I learn some little piece of trivia. This book is set in the mid to late 50’s and it mentions Olivia having an answering machine.  Of course this was before my time but I wondered when did answering machines really come into the homes?  According to Wikipedia there was one introduced in 1949 but it wasn’t a huge success at $200 and the first one that really took off was in 1960.  Doesn’t mean that there weren’t answering machines, just not a common place item.  But I thought it was interesting that Olivia would have one in her home.

Bette has written another winner and knows how to capture our hearts with her characters. There are some funny and emotional parts, all what makes a good story.

And knowing Bette like I do, I was quite surprised (and ecstatic) to see my name in her book as one of the minor characters!   I actually saw my name and stopped and stared for a good minute or two.  I was touched to see my name, and also the names of a few other of her fans.  Thank you Bette for the honor!!!

Overall, we give this book 5 paws up and highly recommend this series!

About the Author

Award-winning author Bette Lee Crosby is originally from New Jersey, but now makes her home in Southern Florida where she lives with her husband Richard and a feisty Bichon Frise named Katie. I’d like to give a big ol’ Texas Hug to my pal Bette Lee Crosby.  I’m not sure how she and I became acquainted but I’m glad that we did because she has introduced me to some wonderful books.  They just capture your heart in one way or another.  So Welcome to Bette and sit back and learn a little about this fine lady.

Who or what inspired you to become an author?

My mother, born and raised in the mountains of West Virginia, was not a writer, but, she was a wonderful storyteller. Not realizing that at heart I was my mother’s daughter, I studied art intent upon becoming a graphic designer. My first job was that of a packaging designer, but it was a short-lived career. Faced with an immediate deadline and a blank space where the copy should have been, I began to write. I never looked back, and it didn’t take long for me to realize that my love for words far outweighed any design skills I acquired along the way.

Jubilee’s Journey is Book Two in the Wyattsville Series, but wasn’t Book One, Spare Change, written as a stand-alone novel?

Yes it was. Actually all of my books are stand-alone novels, but after Spare Change was published, I discovered that both I and my readers were not ready to leave Wyattsville and the people living there. That’s when I turned it into an ongoing series. Like many writers, I tend to favor the books that reflect the most poignant aspects of their life. For me, it’s my Southern heritage.

Will there be more books in The Wyattsville Series?

Although I do not have one currently planned, I’m sure there will be. Once you get involved with characters you are fond of, it’s hard to let them leave your life forever. I find that I think of characters like Olivia Doyle, Ethan Allen, Paul and Jubilee as friends. I might not get back together with them for six or eight months, but I always know they are there…waiting for me and ready to start off on a new adventure.

You’ve written six novels, in those books, which character is your favorite and why?

I suppose I’d have to say Ethan Allen of Spare Change and the reason why is because he is the type of kid I imagine my mom being when she was his age. She came from a family of eleven siblings and they were what many of us would consider poor; so she had to be resilient and determined to survive. And although she wasn’t one to toss around obscenities indiscriminately, she could cuss up a storm when she was really mad. When Mama started cussing we knew to step aside and mind our manners.

Is Ethan Allen is modeled after your mom, is there a character that you’d modeled after yourself?

There is probably a bit of me in every character, but the one most like me would probably be Olivia Doyle in both Spare Change and Jubilee’s Journey. Like Olivia, I have quirky ideas about life, I am an eternal optimist and regardless of the odds, I will always go down swinging. When life takes a turn for the worse, that’s when you need to be strong, draw on your Faith and cling to the love of those around you…which is pretty much what Olivia does.

What is your next book project?

I am currently working on a novel titled “Previously Loved Treasures.” Although it is not a sequel, it does dovetail into the mystery that ended “The Twelfth Child.” One of the protagonists in this book is a delightful man of magical talents called Peter Pennington and much of the story centers around a very special second-hand store. I believe this book is scheduled for release in April or May of 2014.

What is your favorite quote?

It probably depends upon when and where you ask me. I would love to be deep and profound like so many brilliant writers, but I’ve learned over the years that I am still my mother’s daughter – sometimes irreverent, always a story-lover, but seldom brilliant. So here is the quote that most closely reflects my own thinking…”The problem with people who have no vices is that generally you can be pretty sure they’re going to have some pretty annoying virtues.” Elizabeth Taylor

What advice would you give to an aspiring author?

Be yourself. Discover what’s in your heart and create characters you love or love to hate. Never allow yourself to follow in the tracks of another author simply because he or she sold a million copies of their book. If you stumble on that pathway, your readers will know; your characters will sound shallow and superficial. But if you’re true to yourself and work to develop your own voice it will ring loud and true with believability. It isn’t something that happens overnight. I wrote four novels before the fifth was published, but the truth is that the first four didn’t deserve to be published, they were all part of my learning curve. So, stay with it and learn from the writers who inspire you, from the books you love, and from the books you hate. You learn something from every book you read, and sometimes that something is what not to do.  Most of all enjoy every minute you spend writing—because if you’re not writing for fun, you shouldn’t be writing.

Tell us about writing Jubilee’s Journey

Writing Jubilee’s Journey was somewhat of a trip down memory lane, not because of my own memories, but the memories of my mother, who so generously passed them down to me.

My mom was born in Coal Fork, West Virginia; as was her sister Ruth. They were two in a family of eleven siblings.  Times were hard and the family didn’t always have the luxury of living under the same roof. Once the girls were old enough, they were sent to live with relatives who needed house help; the boys went to work in the mines or became farm hands for neighbors.

When my mom was not yet twenty, she married a city boy from Charleston and moved away. Her sister Ruth married one of the men who worked in the mines. The part of Jubilee’s Journey that tells of life in the mining community is based on the truth of how it was.

I spent many summer vacations visiting my cousins and the memories I have are truly treasured ones. Despite the fact that Ruth’s family had very few material possessions, they were wealthy beyond compare. They were rich in the things that no amount of money can buy—love, faith, trust and hope. Like Bartholomew, Clifford hoped his boys would never see the inside of a mine…and they didn’t. All four of my cousins earned scholarships and went on to become professionals in the fields of education and ministry.

I have always been inspired by the goodness in the life they led, and that inspiration is what led me to write Jubilee’s Journey. I hope the book inspires others as the truth behind this story has inspired me.

The words were muffled against his neck as she bathed his skin with her tongue, sending coils of raw lust circling through him. Her hand found the front of his pants again, her fingers eagerly groping him. Her touch was awkward, uncertain with her stroke and grip, but he found her inexperience strangely provocative. His body tensed, his muscles trembling from the struggle of restraint. Moisture popped out on his forehead with the effort.
