Synopsis

Art historian Genevieve McKenna, who just lost her museum job, lands an exciting assignment: Trace the path of a drawing the Nazis stole in wartime Paris and restore it to the rightful owners.
Plus, there’s Julien Brooks, whose family claims the drawing. She’s eager to get to know him better — a lot better.
But someone — could it be Julien? — is very determined to thwart her investigation.
And why does she keep having bizarre flashbacks to a place she’s certain she’s never been? Are those moments a sign of the same mental illness that plagued her mother’s life?
On a research trip to Paris, Genevieve must confront her growing attraction to Julien and the truth about her destiny. What she learns might crack the case — or cost her and Julien their lives.

Review

I really enjoyed this book!  The book drew me in from the start and I had a hard time putting it down.  I felt like this book combined a little bit of sci-fi and romance with the mystery within the book.   I liked the history tie in to WWII and the art world.  Seems like I have read several books like this lately and the topic fascinates me.  There are several mysteries in this book and I liked that a mystery was being solved right up until the last chapter.  The “main” mystery was resolved near the end but there were still loose ends that had to be tied up.  There is some action tied into the mystery of the artwork which kept the book hopping.  I will admit that I didn’t expect the person behind all of the happenings with the museum, but looking back it makes sense.  I can’t give away too many clues otherwise I will give away everything.
Now there is one character that should have her own book and that is D.  We don’t know her full name other than Genevieve called her that once in college and was told to never call her that again.  D is a very confident woman and I think she is a good friend for Genevieve who is very reserved and does it by the book.   D gets Genevieve out of her comfort zone.
The romance is not over the top and that is one of the mysteries solved at the end….are Julien and Genevieve destined to be together?
We loved this so much we are giving it 5 paws!  Definitely check it out and enter to win a copy of the book below.

What’s the most amazing thing you’ve ever done?

Take a moment, close both eyes, summon your most exaggerated fantasy, and multiply by 1000.

Feel the extraordinary moment for a minute…then multiply it all by 1000 again.

That’s this story. It’s your story too.

If you were ever a little girl, or even a little boy with a romantic soul, you would have known very early on, that someday love would require you to do wonderfully ridiculous things.

And so, I’m going to explain to you, why the most intriguing thing you will ever want to do, is get on a plane and fly to an exotic dinner, at some elegant trois-étoiles across the ocean in Paris.

First Chapter

Love Is Magic

I want to be in love one day,

A perfect love such that my prince would whisk me off for one enchanted night to Paris!

One reckless night, that we might steal a blissful kiss upon some bridge at dawn,

A kiss we will remember all our lives.

And when we’re back home and all alone, I’d buy him socks; ‘cause he’s my man,

Mine and mine alone!

                                      —A. Phillip-Hautecoeur

But in the meantime, I must relate a fascinating story about an enchanting French woman named Eff.

Don’t be anxious; she’s not enchanting in any Hollywood sort of way; she’s just extraordinarily normal, bordering on blasé. Like you, Eff hasn’t uncovered a remedy for some troublesome affliction; neither, for that matter, invoked an imperative on Pandora to rid the world of all its difficulties. However, just as the moth flutters its wings in Blankpen Forest provoking a tempest ten thousand miles away in Indo-Chine, Eff might double over in a gut-aching laugh, causing a torrential shower to end a drought in far away Eretria. Quite often we’re influenced by events we’re not at all aware of.

I’m convinced that every endeavor has an ultimate. Love has its own ultimate bucket list, with just one item on it.

We all daydream, imagining our one extreme voluptuous fantasy. We all wish to one day say, “I had the most amazing day of my entire life,” about a totally consuming, outrageously enchanting, completely romantic day where we’re transported on a cloud tomorrow going home. We all secretly dream of one exquisite night in Paris.

Imagine the Cinderella story—prince, carriage, and horses with white mice for footmen—finessed into its more modern version, the Pretty Woman movie, especially the part where he takes her out for the night all dressed up to dinner in the shiny jet. You quietly hope that at some point it will be your turn, sailing through a deep dark night, a thousand glittering stars above, smoldering city lights below, an overwhelming promise of romance and enchantment crowned with an elegant dinner, champagne, and a princely dream. And perhaps, innocently unaware, you find yourself humming the opening bars to, “Someday My Prince Will Come,” knowing that the enchanting promise of romance will happen for you—someday.

The most amazing day of your entire life—part fantasy, part luxury, all enchanting, all true. I’ve always wanted to nonchalantly say, “Forget the moon; let’s go to Paris for dinner,” as if it were something that anyone would do on a whim. Afterward we’d stroll to the open plaza to watch the twinkling of the Eiffel Tower with a chilled bottle of champagne wrapped in a stolen hotel towel with two borrowed glasses—a passionate and sleepless night at the Ritz, dark coffee, some fragrant, warm, flakey croissants, and then back on a flight towards home.

Every princess deserves a perfectly romantic prince. They deserve to live the promise of one truly amazing day and night together—an incredible fantasy, a doable fairytale where, for a moment, passions cause kisses to conjure frogs into royals.

Because life is love and fairies wings, and somehow a bit short, we all should at least once:

Share an outrageously perfect dinner just for two at a lavish 3-Star table in Paris.

Sip a sublimely effervescent bottle of French champagne (or three).

Be enchanted by the Tower’s sparkle at midnight as reflected light from diamonds twinkle through our lover’s eyes.

Spend one perfect night secreted in a little room for two at the Plaza, Crillon, or Ritz.

Have one flawlessly orchestrated day and night in a place where luxury, history, glittering lights, and fantasy describe the perfect fairytale.

Have room service lay a simple breakfast just for two.

Just once, if only once.…

=========

More than just love, I adore my wife. Seriously. I say that with resolute certainty and fascination. Not like one degenerate drunk to another, avoiding getting off a precariously tilting barstool to delay going home. Falling in love is a matter of immaculate magical hope. And we all hope, deep in our hearts, that we’ll be in love one day and that it will last and last forever.

The trick with magic is that even though it’s improbable, it sometimes happens anyway, usually when you don’t expect it. I certainly never do. Still, to awkwardly stumble upon the woman of your dreams who’s come to New York on vacation from five thousand miles away in Paris…well, that’s a fairly decent trick.

I once read a book by a British author attempting to explain the relative dichotomy concerning randomness and luck. He suggested that there are ways in which to make yourself lucky. Basically his recommendation was; keep a positive attitude, be inquisitively sociable, and remain open and expectant of the wonderful benefaction that life might present. It all seemed perfectly reasonable to me.

Being on time has always been a matter of high principal for me. That’s the only reason I happened to be where I was at the time.

Madison Bistro is an old-ish French restaurant on Madison Avenue and Thirty-Seventh Street in New York City. Business people and familiar friends frequent the drowsy little crevice. Unlike other ultratrendy New York fusion eateries, they keep the lights turned up, and there’s no blaring music, so conversing patrons can hear each other without yelling and constantly repeating themselves. I used to visit quite regularly, meeting clients and friends, but hadn’t stopped by for about a year since I’d started working out of Brooklyn.

Today I was in Manhattan, forty minutes early for a meeting with six guys who planned to take America by storm with a big real-estate investment idea. They knew nothing about financing, and since I’m supposedly a banker, my contribution was to listen and then offer suggestions as to how the money aspect would work.

There are no bookstores or other shops on that stretch of Madison Avenue, so to suck up the extra minutes I thought to have a coffee at the bistro. The restaurant door had been left open as it was a relatively balmy November evening—November 7, to be exact.

There’s the rare instance in everyone’s life when you have the experience that the world, without necessarily stopping, slows so dramatically that you’re absolutely certain you’re on a movie set being directed by an invisible intuition. Approaching the entrance at Madison Bistro was my only such experience ever.

The building isn’t very wide, only about eighteen feet. The entrance is a small, brown, old-fashioned door to the right. Immediately inside, there is a bar to the left that runs for maybe fifteen feet and takes up the entire width of the room, except perhaps a three-foot-wide walkway, leading at its end, to the seating area a few quick steps down.

I’m at the door. The director must have yelled, “Quiet!” since I’m not conscious of hearing anything anymore; and then… “Action!”

About the Author

Andre Phillip-Hautecoeur defines himself as, “…not a writer really.” He simply had an urge to write something about Paris.

It’s the city exactly at the intersection of romance, history, fantasy and enchantment; everyone faces Paris in some form of a dream. He came to know and love Paris hanging onto the hem of his wife’s skirt. She’s Parisian, she’s everything French without constraint; she makes understanding all of Parisness a pleasure. An understanding which made him want to write.

Together they make home between New York and Paris. Shuttling back and forth continues to be the ultimate dream.

His latest book is the contemporary romance, One Exquisite Paris Night.

Review

LOVED this book!  I hadn’t read the first book and if you have read my blog for any amount of time you know that I MUST read the books in order in a series, if only to understand better the personal stories of the characters.  Well I think this is probably the first book in a long time that I didn’t feel totally lost on the personal story.  I felt like there was enough of the back story to catch me up enough to not feel lost.

That said….while I was reading the book, I was trying to figure out how this was a mystery.  We knew that the council members (or at least a few of them) were corrupt and were being paid off or paying others off to get what they wanted done, or what the developers wanted done.  Boy was I wrong!  Not only was there a HUGE reveal, it was characters I didn’t expect to be “dirty”.  I’m not going to say much more because I do not want to ruin the book for anyone.  Needless to say I was quite shocked at the turn of events.

There are also some fun characters, like Mike Nero – a former classmate of Chelsey’s that has decided he is in love with her and is basically stalking her.  There is Babs, the older lady that calls her and lets her know that the Tooth Fairy is running a cemetery in the land across from her house.  And of course Bonnie who takes no prisoners and tells Chelsey she needs to let her kitten out…her sex kitten that is.

And with any good mystery there is a love romance.  Chelsey is dating (or trying to date) Kris.  They are both single parents so it can be hard actually getting to go on a date but they manage to make it work.  However, there is someone else that comes into the picture that could make it interesting for Chelsey.  He has said that if things don’t work out with Kris to let him know.  I don’t want to say more and I’m definitely not giving you his name because that would ruin some of the book.

We give this book 5 paws and suggest you pick it up at your next change.  Or enter to win a copy below!  Oh and read the first book too, I know I need to go back and find Red Tape myself!

Today I’m welcoming Michele Lynn Seigfriend and her main character in her mystery books, Chelsey Alton, to StoreyBook Reviews and we are going to get some great gift ideas for Valentine’s Day which is just 2 days away!  Ladies, if you are struggling for something to get your fella, take note of these ideas….Lord knows I will be!

Gift Ideas from Chelsey Alton

Guest post by Michele Lynn Seigfried

With Valentine’s Day fast approaching, I started to think about what I could get for my husband, but I was fresh out of ideas. It didn’t help that both my husband’s birthday and Christmas both took place within the past two months! So, I thought we’d get a few pointers from Chelsey Alton the main character in Red Tape and Tax Cut.

Chelsey is a single mom, with a love interest or two. Since she’s new on the dating scene, I asked her what she was thinking about getting for her potential suitors. “I’m not actually in a long-term, serious relationship,” Chelsey said, “so I’m not sure I would expect to get a gift for Valentine’s Day. I’m not sure if I should buy something either. I hate this part of dating…the whether or not I should buy a gift part.” I asked her to make a list of ten things that she would give to someone she was new to dating and here is what she came up with:

* A T-shirt or something with a team logo. It shows you are paying attention to his likes, but doesn’t look overly sentimental for someone I haven’t dated very long. I don’t want to send him running in a panic with a gift that makes him think I’m in love with him after only a few dates.

* Hobby items. If he played golf, I’d get him some golf balls. If he was a chef, I’d get him a new kitchen gadget. For a wine lover, I’d get him an aerator. For a fisherman, new lures.

* Toys. Let’s face it, boys like their toys. I once bought a man a Pez dispenser and he acted like I had given him a million dollars. Star wars figures, Hess trucks, or a dart board are good examples.

* Beer, assuming he drinks. The liquor stores carry unique craft beers in unusual sizes, with fun names, and amusing labels. Or if there is a local brewery, beer from there is unique. You could book a tour of the brewery to go with it.

* Winery tasting/tour. Where I live in New Jersey, there are many wineries. They offer tours and tastings, some of which include cheese or other food items as well. It’s a unique thing to do and it gives you an idea for where to go on a date as well.

* Tickets to local sporting events. The local baseball and hockey teams where I’m from charge very little for tickets. Sometimes, there are local boxing matches and indoor football games at the arena. Two tickets that are somewhat inexpensive for the guy to go with his buddies or to bring me, is a thoughtful way to remember someone on Valentine’s Day or any other occasion.

*  Tickets to a comedy show. Who doesn’t like to laugh?

* Lottery tickets. Scratch-offs are fun and maybe he’d win more than what you paid for the tickets.

* Movie tickets. I never met a guy who didn’t like going to the movies. I’m not saying they don’t exist, I just haven’t met one!

* Something weird or unusual. I once got a “Corkcicle” and I thought it was the coolest thing. Amazon sells them. http://amzn.to/1fR3vPT. They make them for beer too. Once I found a magnesium fire starter at a craft show. That was unique for someone who has a fireplace or likes camping. At a different craft show, I found a ketchup/mustard/salt/pepper holder that was in the shape of a picnic table. Great for someone who likes to grill.

Thank you Chelsey Alton!  I think these sound like great ideas, not only for Valentine’s Day and not only for a new love interest!  I’m sure my brother or my husband would love to get some of these gifts! I hope you also found this list useful! Check out what Chelsey is up to in her life in my new novel, Tax Cut, a cozy mystery that will keep you guessing and make you laugh!

Reign Supreme

A Reign Supreme by Richard Crystal

When a copper deposit is discovered on the land of the Makenda tribe in eastern Kenya, a young king, Ule Samanga, is told to relocate his people to a refugee camp in Nairobi or risk imprisonment. When all appears lost, the young king discovers the existence of Curtis Jackson, a mysterious half-brother presently living in New York. Believing this unexpected news is an omen from the spirit of his ancestors, he eagerly seeks his help to save their sacred tribal homeland. A struggling mortgage broker and former jazz prodigy, Curtis initially has no interest in developing a relationship with his newly found African family. But when he’s presented with an intriguing business offer, he embarks on a journey to Africa that becomes a spiritual odyssey, changing him in ways he never imagined.

In this assured debut, Richard Crystal weaves a complex story of contemporary moral imperatives conceived during Obama’s victorious election as America’s first black President. Themes of corporate malfeasance and exploitation will resonate with readers of The Constant Gardener and Blood Diamond. But beyond the various political machinations, readers will find a heartwarming story infused with the strains of Coltrane, the history of jazz and the enduring power of family.

Praise for A Reign Supreme:

“Mr. Crystal has fashioned a tale of virtue and vice in the modern world. It deals with corporate greed, the politics of today’s African economic scene and how they test the people who have to make their living in that environment. And it’s all backed by the mellow sounds of modern jazz. I’m sure it will intrigue all.”
– Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, legendary basketball star, author and jazz aficionado

“From the streets of New York to a remote tribal village in Kenya, A Reign Supreme is a moody, intriguing and emotional story. Our hero’s journey from teenage jazz prodigy, to a man haunted by his past, to accepting his surprising fate of heritage, is a terrific read.
I’m not just Richard Crystal’s brother, I’m his fan.”
– Billy Crystal, actor, comedian and writer

“As you read ‘A Reign Supreme’ you will wonder if the author is a jazz musician from the streets of New York or was raised in a village in Kenya. The language of the characters is perfect and real. The descriptions of locations are both factual and extremely visual. Richard Crystal takes you on an adventure involving family loyalty, greed, life changing decisions and much, much more. Something for everyone.”
– Lou Adler, award winning music and film producer, recently inducted into the Rock n’ Roll Hall of Fame

“John Coltrane constructed his four-part magnum opus A Love Supreme as a harmonic journey meant to convey an ascendancy to spiritual enlightenment—the musical statement of one man meant to inspire and uplift all. With deep appreciation for that inspirational source, Richard Crystal has been inspired to create a story in four sections that follows that same path to a personal awakening, a return to one’s roots, and realization of one’s purpose. A Reign Supreme is a rare example of a powerful literary work drawing its spirit from a timeless musical classic, with a deft, reverential touch that avoids cliche or overstatement.”
– Ashley Kahn, jazz historian and author of A Love Supreme: The Story of John Coltrane’s Signature Album and Kind of Blue – The Making of the Miles Davis Masterpiece.

“In “A Reign Supreme”, Richard Crystal creates a multi-dimensional experience for the reader such as I’ve rarely experienced. Besides creating a fascinating and suspenseful plot that keeps the reader turning pages and transports him or her to Kenya with details you can taste, hear and feel so well you would swear you were there, he has, through his own musical experience, created descriptions of jazz that enables the reader to actually hear the music. It’s extraordinary.”
– Andrew Neiderman, Author of The Devil’s Advocate and the worldwide V.C. Andrews literary franchise

Excerpt

It started to drizzle. Cold, steely drops that threatened to morph into sleet. The rain hit Allison’s windshield, slithered in rivulets to the corners, and turned to ice, so that she had to scrunch down and squint to see the road. She fingered the envelope that sat on the seat next to her. Her head ached.

Home. She turned the word around on her tongue, flipped it backward and forward, and swirled it around until the nausea passed. At home lived a different Allison.  Fat ankles. Uneven bangs. A preference for peanut butter right from the jar.

“Self-reinvention is the key to survival,” Mia had told her when she was first hired by her mentor’s image-consulting firm. “In this line of work and in life.”

“Yeah, right. There’s no escaping the past,” Allison had wanted to say in response. But she’d been twenty-five, poor, and disillusioned. Funny how an empty bank account can make one into a believer.

And so she’d Jennifer Aniston-ed her hair and painted her lips and learned the difference between Gucci and Prada, first for herself and then for her clients. She traded her third-floor studio in Ardmore for a two-story townhouse in Wayne and learned to navigate ten courses worth of silverware. Eventually she married Jason, her mentor’s son, a man with a nice, normal American surname and then divorced him, keeping the name as a booby prize. Chalupowski would have looked awful on a book jacket.

At times, she missed the old Allison. She missed the energy of idealism and the ease with which someone who has nothing can move through the world. She knew this new life was based on the perpetuation of a lie, of a million little daily lies. But the lies, if told often enough and with enough enthusiasm, could become truth.

Just look at her.

Allison kept one hand still on the steering wheel and used the other to peel back the flap of the envelope. Wedged between the stiff edges of her mother’s official documents sat the sickly yellow of an old newspaper clipping. She knew without touching it, without reading the bold-lettered headline, what it said. Man Drives over Embankment in Apparent Homicide/Suicide Attempt. Her father. Her mother. And over twenty years later, the pain still blanketed her like a low-lying fog.

She pushed the article back into the packet. Miraculously, her parents had lived through the ordeal with few serious injuries, but the emotional wounds had never really healed. Your mother has Alzheimer’s, Allison, her father had said back then, as though that simple fact explained everything. It’ll be uphill from here. So the years before that, the mom-has-a-migraine-and-is-in-her-bedroom-make-us-some-dinner-watch-your-sister-Allison years, were the easy ones?

Allison shook her head. The contents of that envelope didn’t tell the full story any more than a pile of individual timbers resembled a finished house. Where were the court hearings, the social workers with their shopworn empathy and mind-fuck questions, the belt beatings, the experimental drugs and doctors’ visits and furtive glances when the electricity went off because no one had paid the bill?

The rain stopped.

Allison flicked off her wipers and made a left onto her parents’ street. Tiny ranch house after tiny ranch house, all with tiny yards and chain-link fences. She pulled up to their home, behind a grit-sprayed Ford. From the outside, nothing much had changed. Same peach-colored stucco, same white stone-filled flower beds, same crumbling walkway. Though it was nearly spring, a woven-wicker doe and fawn, leftover Christmas decorations, remained in the front yard. The doe lay on her side. The fawn stood over her, as though in mourning.

What a great book!  I really enjoyed getting to know the characters and how their lives intertwined.  Plus it was nice to see characters that were not with out their faults and own family issues.  Allison has issues with her sister Faye, her mom has dementia and her dad is on the way down too.  Vaughn may seem like he has it all together until you see into his past and how it has shaped who he has become today.  I thought Maggie was an interesting character.  She is the daughter of a Senator but doesn’t fit into the mold that her dad seems to have set out for her.  It is refreshing to see how Allison helps her realize that maybe life isn’t as bad as she thinks.

There were many suspects with their own reason to kill the “divorce” lawyer…but none that I could figure out!   But that is all I’m going to say because I can’t spoil it for you!

We enjoyed this book and give it 4 paws.  Pick it up next time you want a mystery with some complex characters.

Today I am lucky enough to have Wendy Tyson join us and give us her thoughts on writing.  Wendy is the author of Killer Image and The Seduction of Miriam Cross, both books I was lucky enough to receive a copy to read and review.  I think Wendy is on a roll with these two and I can’t wait to see what she comes out with next.

Making Time to Write

I just finished the second novel in the Allison Campbell Mystery Series.  The book is called MURDEROUS LOOKS, and it marks the first time I had to write under a deadline.  Until now, I’ve always had the luxury (and yes, I now realize it was a luxury) of writing at my own pace.  But once you’re under contract, the game changes.  It’s exciting–but it presents a whole new world of time management challenges.

I’m the mother of three boys, work full-time and have an hour-long commute.  One of the questions I hear most often is “How do you find time to write?”  The truth is, I never find time to write–I make it.  And, frankly, some days it’s really, really hard.  Like many of us, I have a million other things vying for my time: lacrosse and soccer games, work demands, dinner-making, laundry, last minute book reports.  You get the picture.

But like anything you feel passionate about, if you want to write, you write.  And so I make the time (and sacrifices) for writing.  Each day.  The same way I make time for brushing my teeth and exercise.  (Okay, maybe not the exercise.)  And with a deadline looming, I realized recently that carving out–and keeping–that writing time was going to be even more critical.

So what’s my advice for aspiring writings who, like me, want to fit writing into a hectic lifestyle?  After much trial and error (read: hair-pulling and tears), I came up with a few things that have helped me along the way:

Take a hard look at how you spend your time.  I’m the queen of procrastination.  When I took an honest look at how I was spending my days, I realized that I’d found time for television shows and mindless Internet surfing–things I could easily sacrifice.  If you really want to write, you may have to give something else up, but chances are, the time is there for the taking.  You’re probably not as busy as you think you are.

Schedule writing sessions–and keep them.  At the time I started writing novels, I had two toddlers at home.  Once they were awake, our house was not a bastion of peace, and I could barely hear myself think much less produce a coherent sentence on the page.  To counter that, and to deal with the fact that I’m useless mentally at night, I decided to write early in the morning.  Figure out a time to write that works for you–and make it a habit.  Can you write at lunchtime?  Early mornings?  An hour before dinner?  Set a time every day and make it a priority.  Sessions don’t need to be long.  Some days I only have 30 minutes to write.  But for those 30 minutes, that’s all I do.

Identify other writing-related tasks and schedule time for them, too.  Unfortunately, there are a lot of activities that writers must do that take them away from writing.  There’s research, editing and proofreading.  Before publication, there are agent query letters to write and send, writers’ groups to attend and writing samples to prepare.  And after a deal is made, there are blog posts to write, promotional materials to create, marketing campaigns to organize, and the all-important social media to master.  If you already have a day that’s full of other important tasks, where do these jobs fit it?  For me, these tasks were best left for evening, when I would typically be sacked out in front of the television.  I’m not writing the Great American Novel at that hour, but I can easily do research, etc. while the kids are asleep or finishing homework.

Engage family and friends.  I asked for my family’s support, and they gave it to me.  When you make something a priority, you’re demanding time for yourself.  That can be hard.  Many of us are used to doing for others around the clock, and asking for “me-time,” especially for something that’s not yet earning income, can feel uncomfortable.  But if this is something you want – if you, like me, need to write – it’s important to make that priority known.  You may be surprised at how encouraging your friends and family will be.

Be patient with yourself.  Writing is a craft that has to be learned and honed over time.  Set realistic goals and remember to enjoy the journey.  Rejection is part of the game.  Many authors have written multiple novels (me included) before getting published.  Impatience can lead to frustration–and frustration can lead to quitting.  But if you want to write, you have to keep going.  Ernest Hemingway said, “We are all apprentices in a craft where no one ever becomes a master.”  So even when the last thing you want to do is sit your butt in a chair and write–do it.  Keep the pen moving.  Slog along.

Make time for fun.  Most writers write because they love it.  When my work-in-progress begins to feel too much like a chore, I know it’s time to set it aside and do something else.  For me, that something else can be a bike ride or hike with the kids, a family movie night, a weekend away with friends.  It’s important to keep the joy in writing – and in life.  And knowing when to take a short break (and even put that manuscript aside for a bit) can mean fresher writing, a sharper eye and a happier you.

This month our book club read this book by Swedish author, Jonas Jonasson.  Definitely an interesting book!

100 yr old man

Synopsis

It all starts on the one-hundredth birthday of Allan Karlsson. Sitting quietly in his room in an old people’s home, he is waiting for the party he-never-wanted-anyway to begin. The Mayor is going to be there. The press is going to be there. But, as it turns out, Allan is not… Slowly but surely Allan climbs out of his bedroom window, into the flowerbed (in his slippers) and makes his getaway. And so begins his picaresque and unlikely journey involving criminals, several murders, a suitcase full of cash, and incompetent police. As his escapades unfold, we learn something of Allan’s earlier life in which – remarkably – he helped to make the atom bomb, became friends with American presidents, Russian tyrants, and Chinese leaders, and was a participant behind the scenes in many key events of the twentieth century.

Review

This was our book club read this month. I found it quite amusing tied in with a lot of history. Sometimes it seemed like the author rambled on, but it did all eventually tie in together. On the back of the book it compared it to the movie Forrest Gump and I’d have to agree. It seemed rather ludicrous that a Swede would find himself in the company of many heads of state throughout his 100 years of life, but that is what made it interesting. Look at it as a history lesson disguised as fiction.

I gave it 4 paws.
