Third daughter

Third Daughter by Susan Kaye Quinn

Skyships, saber duels, and lots of royal intrigue… and, of course, kissing.

The Third Daughter of the Queen wants her birthday to arrive so she’ll be free to marry for love, but rumors of a new flying weapon may force her to accept a barbarian prince’s proposal for a peace-brokering marriage. Desperate to marry the charming courtesan she loves, Aniri agrees to the prince’s proposal as a subterfuge in order to spy on him, find the weapon, and hopefully avoid both war and an arranged marriage to a man she does not love.

Third Daughter is the first book in the The Dharian Affairs Trilogy (Third Daughter, Second Daughter, First Daughter). This steampunk-goes-to-Bollywood (Bollypunk!) romance that takes place in an east-Indian-flavored alternate world filled with skyships, saber duels, and lots of royal intrigue. And, of course, kissing.

From the author of the bestselling Mindjack Trilogy, The Dharian Affairs is a new series filled with equal doses of action-adventure and romance, meant to appeal to fans of Mindjack.

NOMINATED for the Illinois Librarian’s “Soon to be Famous Author Project” wherein librarians hope to discover local authors whose “work will jump off the page for readers.”

“Third Daughter is vividly breathtaking. Quinn delivers royal intrigue, exotic locations, and sweeping romance. Not to be missed!” – Pavarti K. Tyler, author of Shadow on the Wall

“Susan Kaye Quinn writes characters that leap off the page… Incredibly well written, the vivid setting was crisp in my mind… As the plot raced on, I was cursing real life for not letting me just sit glued to my kindle, punching the touch screen to get to the next page.” – Tiffany on Goodreads

Excerpt

A lone two-wheeled surrey ambled out of the shadows of the Samirian embassy and headed toward her dark corner of the Queen’s estate. Aniri held her breath and silently cursed the full two-moon night. If the carriage came much closer, the occupants would surely see her clinging to the side of the palace like a spider on her thread.

The six-hooved beast pulling the surrey slowed as it neared the giant stone statue of Devkasera. The mother goddess of ancient Dharia loomed larger-than-life, threatening the carriage with a sword and a scroll—the powers of destruction and creation—clasped in two of her six hands. The Queen loved the ancient traditions, so the goddess held a place of respect in the middle of the palace lawns. Aniri preferred the clean streets and steam-driven inventions of modern Dharia to the unwashed feet and mystic religion of her country’s past, but that didn’t stop her from sending a silent prayer to Devkasera—for invisibility for herself or perhaps a sudden loss of sight by the persons in the carriage.

Layers of Veronica banner 7

Napoleon 7

Synopsis

They say that when a student is ready, a teacher appears.

What they don’t say is where to register, and how to matriculate in that teacher’s class.

That is a divine gift.

Veronica had it all:  the looks; the brains; the personality; and the wardrobe.  Not to mention a perfect husband, a fabulous career and two adorable children, until the perfect husband leaves her for another woman.

Thus begin the daily routines of a typical New York City immigrant with ambition whose teachers keep appearing, and for whom divine interventions keep affording new opportunities.

Though it starts like ordinary connections going through the tried and true, each relationship continues to delve into parts of her own universe that Veronica didn’t know existed.  A universe that is suddenly open to her.

This is a different kind of heroine…

Excerpt

“You see the details and you are awed by them.  It shows in your dress, in your manner, in how you look at things, how you eat…  It’s all art.  No amount of money or education can give it to you.  You either see it, or you don’t.”  He took another sip.

He was about to tie it all together for her.  “Our society works in layers…”

“Oh, my god … what did you just say?”  Her eyes opened wide, and she stared at him.  But he didn’t see what was so shocking.

“Our society works in layers.  Notice I didn’t say levels.  It’s not linear.”  This was important.  He needed her to see this.  “Think of it this way.  You consider a person’s worth by their financial statement.  This is how much you earn/own, and this is how much you owe/spend.  Like, John Smith is worth a billion dollars.  With me so far?”

She shook her head … Someone else subscribes to the layers theory? She continued to stare at him.

“You transcend that, Veronica.  There are several more layers of you that you don’t even know.  You know that you are very beautiful, but you also have this magnificent charisma, this affect on people.  You talk with your clients, your friends, your kids, and with me on completely different “layers”… like a napoleon, yes?”

She nodded her head, still in awe.

“It isn’t that one layer is better than the other, although some will argue that the soaked bottom is best because it has the most flavor; others will say the flaky top is best; still others prefer the middle because it is just the right amount.  But one cannot exist without the other.  I would very much like to see you discover the layers of yourself.  There are many that you have not discovered, and it’s only because no one has taught you.  You excel in things that you do.  You’re quite a virtuoso, and I’d like to teach you about more.  Interested?“

I’m being presented with an opportunity.  Am I even hearing this correctly?  Did he just say that there is another world, layers, that I am worthy of attaining, and that he would like to help me reach and discover these layers?  Wasn’t that what I was hoping for when we first met … to learn from him?   Concentrate, Nika, this is serious.  “I’m more than interested, Jeremy, but I’m unaware of what is required of me.”

He smiled.  “Good question. There are many layers here, but let’s deal with the first two.  First things first… you have trust issues.”

Trailer

Review

The book seemed slow for the first half and I wasn’t quite sure where the plot was going. However it started picking up when Veronica met Jeremy and he wanted to teach her how to gain what he had in life. There was also a good chapter where Veronica steps in to help an old family friend’s daughter stay out of jail. The book does end on something of a cliffhanger because I know it left me wondering what was going to happen next with Veronica.

This book seemed like a cross between 50 Shades (but without the S&M) and Pretty Woman.

We give this 3 paws, the storyline (once it was revealed) made for good reading but other times the books just seemed to ramble or it was gratuitous sex scenes.

There are 2 other books in this series

Fairytales 7

Synopsis of Fairytales

Ever wonder why there is so much gore in the storybooks that we read to our children?  Is it because it is appropriate preparation for life?

Amidst the balls, and gowns and champagne … there are evil stepmothers and death and disease.  There are also valiant princes, and kindly matriarchs and enchanted lands.  There is no alternate reality though.  It is still modern day New York… and Paris, of course.

Still, Veronica needs to get up and go to work, and take the kids to school, and play nice with the ex’s new wife.  But each layer is enchanted with its own romance… and its own lover becomes a benevolent wizard.  There’s Ben… and Jeremy… and Edmonde.  And then there’s KD.  Why choose?

These are the games your mama never taught you.  These are men’s games played by a woman.  And a woman is only eligible to play when she is taught to see the world differently.  It isn’t just a matter of calculations… it is a matter of nobility.  What Jeremy taught in NAPOLEON, becomes a world of experience in FAIRTYATLES.

They say you only love once… but that isn’t a fact for Veronica.   Each of her bedmates offers her and demands from her something different.

What starts out as a parochial life, with known participants and variables, is unveiled with more and more opportunities.  Each comes with a privilege and an obligation – and Veronica has never shirked an obligation.  Not even in a fairytale.

It’s all connected… just on a higher layer.

Petals 7

Synopsis of Petals

The prettiest of blooms commence with the nurturing of the seed?  In PETALS… Veronica’s life goes global, and she unites her family with the aristocracy around her, without self- betrayal.

Physical recovery post trauma is not the difficult part.  How do you heal the other parts of you?   And what if you were stupid enough to throw out the healer in your life?

Every relationship takes work.  Every relationship is a lesson.  Each has a depth.

Where NAPOLEON and FAIRYTALES opened a magical kingdom dominated and ruled by men… PETALS reveals the same monarchy ruled by women.   There is a new perspective on the same world, and the same characters.  Relating to women, and taking your place among the nobility requires a lot… and not at all a marriage or blueblood.

But of course it wouldn’t be Veronica’s life…if there weren’t more lovers, more galas, more jewels and of course… more heartbreak…

It is a fun journey.    What it isn’t — is a known destination.

About the Author

Emilia Rutigliano 2Emilia I. Rutigliano scored fiftieth percentile on her SATs… and on her LSATs… and on her BAR…Sigh…

But she nevertheless survived, and seems to be doing OK. She practices Law (read lore) in Brooklyn, New York (read Nu Yawk). She was born in the former Soviet Union, and emigrated in 1979. She is happily married to the same crazy Italian she’s been with since college, who suffers from a severe addition to travel (still in acute form). Together they are doing a somewhat passable job with their three precious darlings (who are now teenagers, thus elaboration is not necessary).

Which is why Emilia writes about Veronica. Veronica, though… is interesting. And Emilia knows interesting.

So she weaved the tale about the interesting characters, places and events from her own life. It is remarkable how if you choose to view a subject objectively, it becomes downright artistically gorgeous. So Emilia views and shows Brooklyn Russians as gorgeous, and the Barese intricacies as gorgeous, and she even tolerates Paris, Singapore, Vietnam and Malaysia for the reader’s interests.

Thank you, dear reader, for tolerating these scenes….

Muse Unexpected

Muse Unexpected

“We’re Muses. Not vampires, not fairies, not werewolves. We’re Muses.” Sophie was sure her mother had reached an epic level of crazy. ‘We’re Muses?’ She thought Muses were lame, not to mention she found the idea ridiculous. However, Sophie couldn’t explain away her physical transformation that made Anne Hathaway in The Princess Diaries look like a bad Walmart make-over, not to mention why her mood swings triggered an uncontrollable ability to shoot powerful bursts of energy out of her hands.

Sophie soon realizes modern day Muses have evolved into powerful guardians of humankind, tasked with keeping mortals on the right path and the original Olympians locked away from the world. But old hatreds don’t die easily, especially for immortal enemies that have an eternity to plot and gather their forces. Well aware of the Fates’ foretelling of another Olympian war, and a young Muse that would rise up as a warrior and defeat them, the Olympians have vowed to either possess Sophie or destroy her. Either way, they will make sure everyone associated with their imprisonment will reap an eternal damnation in the Underworld, leaving the Olympians to restore Mount Olympus and force humankind into a future of never-ending servitude and misery.

Praise for Muse Unexpected

“Ripe with conflict, skin-crawling creepy that is sprinkled with a wonderful sense of humor and a plot fraught with horrific danger in every step taken by Sophie, this book should be on the top of everyone’s must read list. Simply put, I loved it and can’t wait for book 2 to come out.” ~Olive (Amazon Review)

“I remember learning about mythology & Greek gods in elementary school….boring! Well, this fantastic book takes everything you thought about gods/mythology and turns it on it’s ear, sort of like “Wicked” did to the “Wizard of OZ”. At times funny at times gruesome and scary, this story definitely kept my interest. I loved the way the writer made the gods “human”. I also liked the subtle, blink and you’ll miss them hints sprinkled throughout the story. Don’t let the young adult genre scare you away. This is an engaging story that can be enjoyed by all. Can’t wait for the next one!!!!” ~Paula (Amazon Review)

Excerpt

Another servant brought in our lunch on a tray, and I was walking back toward the sitting room to eat when a wave of dizziness overwhelmed me. I recognized the familiar feeling of being outside my body and fought to stop it from happening. The idea of having one of my spells in front of Lucia and the maids in this unfamiliar place was horrifying.

Despite my efforts to avoid it, I dropped to my knees on the floor, holding my head in my hands, and heard Lucia as if from far away.

“What are you doing? Father! Something is wrong with her. What is going on?”

Though I tried my best, I could not stop the vision from coming.

Alone in a luxurious sitting room, I hummed softly to myself while I placed dirty dishes and the remains of a half-eaten meal on a silver platter. When the table was clean, I picked up the heavy platter and left the room, pulling the door closed behind me.

I headed down a dim, narrow, and twisting stairway. After only a few steps, a rat dashed out in front of me and I stumbled. I dropped the tray, trying to catch my balance. Dishes shattered around me. Unable to stop my fall, I tumbled down the stairs for what seemed a very long time, though it was probably only seconds. I landed heavily on the landing at the bottom, my arm twisted painfully beneath me, my back on fire with pain, and lost consciousness.

When I emerged from the vision, Lord Philip was kneeling over me looking alarmed and also slightly curious. Lucia and the maid stood across the room, out of my vision. Lord Philip helped me to sit up. I glimpsed the maid’s shocked face and doubled over with a wave of nausea. Somehow, as I always did in my visions, I knew whose body I inhabited for that brief time. I always saw events from the point of view of the person they were happening too. In this case, I knew it was the kind young maid. Knowing that a horrible accident awaited her, even as she helped me onto the bed I could not bring myself to look her in the eyes.

Lord Philip ordered Lucia and the maid to leave the room so that he could speak with me in private. They seemed happy to oblige after witnessing my odd behavior.

“Did you have a vision, Anabel? Is that how it always happens?”

“It was a vision. It does usually happen this way. Sometimes I can sense it and find a safe place to hide before it happens.”

“I can see why you would want to hide. I imagine people have not always been understanding.” I was surprised at his sympathy, but did not respond. “Can you tell me what you saw?”

“It was not about the king, if that’s what you’re wondering. I will tell you if that ever happens. The rest, I cannot tell you. I never tell anyone.”

Synopsis

For Annemarie Whitted, her youngest sister’s engagement starts as a happy event, and ends as a slap in the face when she comes to the harsh realization that she’s a failure at relationships, a person in stasis. Annemarie is motivated and organized, a woman on a mission, and she’s getting married now.

Her Rules of Engagement ensure she’ll make the right choice, and her committee will find her potential eternal companions. She assigns the job to her closest sister, Lisa, and Lisa’s husband, Tanner. Of course, Tanner comes with baggage— his brother, Ben, Annemarie’s lifelong nemesis.

The war between the two of them gives a brand new meaning to Annemarie’s Rules of Engagement, and his presence isn’t helping her at all. Especially when he disapproves of her methods and questions every step she makes. Especially when their forced proximity makes each of them really see each other for the first time. Especially when she discovers that her heart has secret corners she never knew, and that the Rules might have been her biggest mistake of all

Review

Loved this clean romance. Annemarie doesn’t think she is capable of love so she sets off to find someone to marry with the help of a Rules of Engagement committee which includes one of her sisters, her brother-in-law and his brother. What ensues is hilarity, I can’t tell you the number of times I started laughing out loud at some of the dates she went on. I liked how at the beginning of new chapters there was the list of her requirements and how items are added or crossed off as she figures out what she does not want. And then there is Ben (brother to her brother-in-law and long time family friend). He is just as awkward as she is (after all he is a Nobel Prize winning Physicist). It is no surprise that these two butt heads during this whole process. Will they realize what is in front of them?

I will say that I don’t understand what wards are in the Mormon faith, but that doesn’t make this book any less enjoyable.  I have another book of Amber’s to read, Glitch, which is the first in this series.  Luckily I didn’t need to read that first to enjoy this book!

We give it 5 paws and highly recommend it!

His desires run deep—and dark—and he wants to teach Lucy what wicked really means.

all that glitters

All That Glitters by Jackie Sonnenberg

Genre – Urban Fantasy/Crime

Synopsis

A jewelry thief is on the loose in the town of Wickerwire, Iowa. He leaves behind no trace except for his newly-established calling card: candy in place of the jewels he steals, the media giving him the nickname of “The Candy Caper.”  He makes his mark and vanishes, and no one seems to have any leads on him whatsoever. He won’t give up until he finds his special item…but what exactly is he looking for? And what exactly is in it for him?

Said to be a “backwards superhero story” telling the story of a would-be villain, All That Glitters is a satisfying read for everyone and anyone who has ever fantasized about having a double life, a secret identity as well as a special ability…and whether this ability is seen as a gift or a curse.

Review

Overall this book has a great storyline. Nick is a dentist but is also a kleptomaniac and has been since he was a kid. Bridget is a new jewelry store owner in town…a town that has just seen a rash of robberies of jewelry stores and the calling card by the thief is candy in the empty cases. There is also lore that there are pieces of jewelry that turn negative aspects into something positive.

There are a host of other characters that add to the storyline – Detective Anthony Massey, the wrestling icon Thunder God (who is seeking the good luck jewelry!), Dustin and Cheryl (Dustin works with Nick) and Alex who works with Bridget and is her loss prevention specialist.

I had some small problems reading the story because it took me a little while to realize whose POV the story was coming from.  Was it The Candy Caper?  Was it Nick?  Was it Detective Massey?  The author used “he” a lot and it took awhile to figure out who “he” was at that moment.  However, as the book progressed and we learn who The Candy Caper is, then the book became a little easier to read.

We give this 3 1/2 paws
