anything but civil

Synopsis

Traveling secretary Hattie Davish and her trusty typewriter alight on a small town in Illinois, where the Civil War may long be over, but certain mysteries refuse to be buried…

Hattie Davish is delighted to be ably assisting her wealthy employer, Sir Arthur Windom-Greene, an English scholar who is fluent in Civil War history and hard at work putting together a definitive biography of General Cornelius Starrett. Their research takes them to Galena, Illinois, where they quickly learn that time has done little to heal old battle wounds. Distrust and betrayal seem to linger in everyone’s minds, none more so than the General’s pompous son Henry. And Hattie is certain he has something to do with a string of bizarre incidents in town–especially when he turns up dead…

Between her work for Sir Arthur, preparing for Christmas, and unscheduled visitors from her past, Hattie hardly has time to investigate a murder, but soon she is lost in a labyrinth of secrets and deceit that leads to more questions than answers. Henry had a knack for finding trouble and making enemies, and there’s no shortage of suspects–including Sir Arthur. Now, Hattie must uncover the truth while maintaining her civility in a most uncivil situation.

Review

What a great follow up to A Lack of Temperance! I still didn’t guess who did it, BUT I was closer than the first book. I knew something was up with the killer but wasn’t sure what.

I found the information about the Civil War interesting and the author does a great job with the details.

I’m not sure about Sir Arthur – he has no regard for the law and thinks he is above it all. Perhaps it was the time then? It was also more civilized when Hattie was sorting out who was the klller – no one rushed to leave the room or try and kill someone else to escape it all.

We give it 4 paws and can’t wait for the 3rd book to come out in a few months….I’m on a blog tour for that book so check back later.

Review

I like Harlequin romance books because they are easy reading when you are in the mood for an easy read. This book doesn’t disappoint! There is a little tension between Katrina and Julian (the Prince) but mostly because she is looking out for Sampson and Julian has to learn to trust. I do wish there had been an epilogue at the end to sort of tie it all up in a nice package, but it was still enjoyable.

Excerpt 72

“Excuse me ladies.” The voice comes from nowhere and I look around spotting Amber first with her jaw on the ground. She’s speechless, this never happens with her. My eyes roam to find what’s got her in a comatose state and standing right in front of us is a guy in Wranglers so tight it should be a crime and a baby blue dress shirt with those snap buttons. This guy is playing this cowboy part a little too seriously. His boots are even worn like they are the only pair of shoes he owns. Oh brother, is he kidding me? I roll my eyes while Ambers jaw is still on the floor.

She slowly closes her mouth and manages a weak smile. “Hi.”

My eyes feel like they are constantly rolling, this is a damn joke. We’re next at the concession stand and I lean forward asking for a Bud Light. The girl hands me a big plastic cup filled to the brim. Thank you God. I take a big sip letting the cool liquid slide down my throat. I look back to see he’s still standing there and he’s looking at me. Practically staring. His green eyes are sparkling like emeralds and it takes a second before I’m able to tear mine away.

“I’m Wesley.” That drawl in his voice is almost making me swoon but I stop it. He extends his hand out to me. I can practically hear Amber scoff and I’m agreeing with her. Why isn’t this guy talking to her? I am nowhere near ready to speak to another guy.

Baffled, I just stand there trying to decipher what’s going on. “I’m Amber, this is Hope.” Amber interjects and I shoot daggers at her begging her to shut up. She’s smiling, and I know exactly what she’s doing.

“Nice to meet you Hope. I won’t bite, I swear. I may nibble and that’s it.” Oh man Wesley sure has some nerve! I’m rolling my eyes again and I’m really praying he doesn’t notice because I’m not trying to be rude.

“Nice to meet you too,” I mumble.

“I hope you like the rodeo tonight.” He says never taking his emerald green eyes away from mine. The intensity of his stare takes my breath away.

Synopsis

Buried bones, a missing eco-activist, and a deadly fire? It’s not what Maya Rivers bargained for when she moved to the coastal city of Newport, Oregon to reunite with her brother, Harley. Yet when Harley is accused of an unthinkable crime, Maya insists on adding “amateur sleuth” to her career options. It isn’t long before she discovers an eerie clue . . . but the closer she gets to the truth, the closer a murderer follows.

Review

I really enjoyed this mystery. I had my suspicions about a character and turns out I was right. I didn’t have any clues to base this on other than gut instinct was telling me this person was up to something.

Interesting mix of characters, good balance between good and bad characters. Sometimes I wanted to shake Maya and tell her to not do what she was doing because it could get her in trouble or hurt/killed!  But that is what makes a mystery…the main character not “thinking” about safety and just wants to figure out who did what.  I can’t blame Maya because she was trying to figure out what happened to her brother and why he is being framed.

Tip of a Bone

The Dark Side of Setting

When we arrived on the Oregon coast for our honeymoon, I had no idea this wild seascape would one day become the setting for my first mystery novel. But you know how that goes . . . a place captures your heart and you can’t forget it.

We spent five magical days in Newport, a small city halfway down the coast. My new husband and I—both water scientists—studied sea creatures at the aquarium, pondered the octopus at the science center, searched for agates on the beach, watched gray whales, visited lighthouses, and compared fish-and-chip joints. It was a blissful, relaxing vacation, with Newport as a scenic backdrop.

So when it came time to choose a setting for Tip of a Bone, my debut mystery, I knew the right spot—and doing book research would be the perfect excuse to travel there.

I took full advantage, visiting Newport 13 times. I sampled microbrews at the Rogue Ales Brewery (a site featured in two book scenes) and watched barking sea lions in Yaquina Bay (another book scene). I photographed the Bayfront, marina, forests, and beaches for setting, and tasted local specialties, including salt-water taffy and fresh-from-the-boat halibut and chips.

But this friendly, touristy vibe offered only one side of Newport’s story. And the more I visited, the deeper I dug under the surface.

One night at 2 a.m., I drove the same river road my main character, Maya Rivers, had. It was a terrifying trip. The road twisted and turned through the darkness, offering hairpin curves and an abrupt drop-off into the brown waters of the Yaquina River. I understood what Maya would have felt that night, driving alone through dense fog with a truck chasing her—and nowhere to escape.

On another dark, rainy night, I headed to the Bayfront, wanting to see it with the crowds gone and shops closed. The place was eerily quiet and isolated—and I knew I’d found the perfect spot for Harley (Maya’s brother) to put himself in danger.

During several visits, I experienced Newport’s violent winter storms, with drenching rain and gale-force winds. Adding this bad weather could only enhance the story – it’d make life harder for Maya, testing her inner strength.

To complete my research, I traveled the Fishermen’s Memorial Walk, a trail that commemorates more than 100 locals who’ve lost their lives at sea. It gave me deep appreciation for those who venture into the ocean so we can enjoy fish and chips.

The more I got to know Newport, the more real it became. The “dark side” added layers of complexity to the “light” surface, and I hope that comes through in Tip of a Bone.

So I’m curious to know: Have you read a story set in one of your favorite spots? Did it capture the full setting?

Excerpt from the first chapter

500 BC

Captain Patteleo’s face was a cloud of concern. A cold sweat broke out just below his hairline and panic pounded in his temples. They were going to die. “Commander, we’ve lost power. The fire fatally damaged the control panel.”

The commander pressed his lips hard together, trying to remain calm. Damn! “Why didn’t the backup power come on?”

“I don’t know, but the ship is descending at a rapid pace. If I don’t get the power back on, we’ll hit the ocean in minutes.”

“Turn on the tracking device.” The tracking device was located on top of the ship and had its own power source that could last centuries. At least our people can locate our ship and recover our research, he thought.

Their ship struck the water at eight hundred miles an hour. The impact was so powerful that a spray of white water soared a hundred feet into the air, sending the team hurtling through the ship, violently crashing into walls and equipment. When Commander Tallaios regained consciousness, he lay in a fog. What happened? He looked around, but the room was spinning and his head was throbbing. He squinted his eyes in confusion. Nothing made sense. The control panel was hanging from the roof upside down. Then his memories came flooding back—the fight, the blast, the fire, and then the crash. He realized the ship had landed upside down. The ramifications hit him like a bolt of lightning. The tracking device won’t be able to emit a signal.

He clenched his teeth and slammed his fist down hard in frustration. Now the mission’s a complete failure. He closed his eyes in disappointment. He thought about the other team members. He needed to search for survivors. He struggled to get up, but his legs wouldn’t budge. He lay back down in despair. Probably a broken back. “Can anyone hear me?” he yelled. No answer. Maybe no one else survived.

He sighed heavily in acceptance. He was going to spend the remainder of his short life entombed two miles down at the bottom of the ocean. He had nothing to do but think—think about how horribly wrong everything went.
