Deconstructing Lila cover

Synopsis

Preservationist Lila Gentry returns to her small Texas hometown to restore the famous Chisholm Trial whorehouse where her great-great grandmother was a madam in the 1880s. On her agenda is winning back Jake, the one that got away. But how do you rope a man who doesn’t want to be wrangled?

Jake lives by one creed: Keep it simple. His ex showing up in town, and rehashing old feelings complicates his life and makes him think about things he’s rather forget.

When Lila’s restoration project is threatened before it even begins, she turns to Jake for help. Working together stirs up old feelings but while Lila and Jake always sizzle between the sheets – or wherever the moment takes them – it will involve some sweet-talking and finesse to bring these two together.

Synopsis

Hairstylist Azalea March is looking forward to a wild weekend in Las Vegas with her friends. Oh, sure, they’re supposed to be there on business, attending the biggest hair show on the west coast, but that doesn’t mean they can’t have a little fun. But fun quickly turns to drama. On the first morning of the show, Dhane, the biggest celeb of the hair-styling world, is found dead. As it urns out Azalea’s friend, Vivian, not only knew Dhane, but the tale she weaves of how they met is faker than a showgirl’s uh… assets. When Vivian confesses to the murder and is arrested, Azalea knows there’s no way she could have done it and suspects Vivian may be trying to protect someone. But who?

Azalea now has to convince Alex, the sexy detective from her past, to help her prove Vivian’s innocence and comb through clues more twisted than a spiral perm. But the truth is stranger than anything found on the Las Vegas Strip, and proving Vivian’s innocence turns out to be more difficult than transforming a brunette into a blonde.

Review

I really enjoyed this first book of what I hope will be a series! I’ve read all sorts of cozies but none where the amateur sleuth was a hair stylist. I loved reading the foray into the world of hair styling and technique. The characters are developed quite well and I found the romance between Azalea and Alex quite nice…..and of course there is Kennedy and does he like Azalea too?

And this is yet another book where I didn’t guess the killer….the killer was quite hidden and you don’t really figure it out until it is revealed…at least there were no overt clues that I could tell.

I look forward to more antics with Azalea, Vivian, Juan Carlos, Alex and Richard!

On Sunday, our Book Club had Rachel Caine as our guest.  My husband met Rachel at our mail box location and struck up a conversation with her when he saw all the books.  Hubby does know what a voracious reader I am so of course that would catch his eye.  She gave him her card and said to get in touch and she would come speak to us.  After months of conversations and a postponement due to weather, we finally were able to meet and have a conversation about her books, publishing, contracts, the production of Morganville Vampires into a web series, her many talents (including web design) and many other things.  It was a delightful 2 hours and I know several of us could have sat there and for a few more hours talking to her about anything and everything.

We all read a book by her and my pick was Working Stiff, the first book in the Revivalist series.  I really enjoyed this book even though urban fantasy really isn’t my normal genre to read.  I did realize pretty quickly that a coworker would enjoy this book, and I was right!  This is the first of a 3 book series so I will be looking for the next 2 in the series so I can see how it all end.  I did give this book 5 paws in my rating system.

Bryn Davis has her whole life ahead of her. A new job as a funeral director. A new start. But when she discovers her boss has a side business reviving the dead with a hijacked government pharmaceutical, she’s not just in danger … she’s dead. Revived, enslaved to the nanite drug to keep herself alive, Bryn finds an ally in mysterious stranger Patrick McCallister … and a new purpose as a spy for the pharmaceutical giant trying to recover its lost property.

You know you have had a busy week when the post you have scheduled didn’t have the review yet and you didn’t have time to go back and add it in!  Sheesh!  I’m sure we have all had days like that…at least I hope I am not the only one.  I featured this book earlier today on my Mystery Monday segment and now for the review.

Review

I haven’t read too many historical cozies but really enjoyed this one. It is set in the early 1900’s when alcohol was taboo to some and others were trying to stop people from drinking by passing laws.  Pretty sure this was before prohibition!  I thought the background on the springs in Eureka Springs and the healing properties that people believed they held was interesting and well written.

I had a couple ideas of who might have been the killer but never guessed it correctly!  That is the sign of a good mystery to me.  I went back and forth but this person was never on my radar.

We give this book 4 paws and can’t wait to read the next 2 books in the series!

A Crusty Murder Button Post Size

Synopsis

Who said life was simple, complacent, and boring?

After the man of her dreams, Scotsman Aidan Sinclair, walks into her bread shop, Melina Cameron immediately realizes her life has taken a sharp left turn.

Finding her ill-tempered landlady murdered, only complicates matters.

Melina’s seventy year old grandmother has chosen to take a walk on the wild side of life, and Detective Graham, lead investigator from the Providence Police Department, has taken a fancy to Melina. Too many issues and too little time to adjust to the implications of them all, leaves Melina floundering to keep her business, The Hole in the Wall Bakery, open and running smoothly.

Excitement and danger ramp up when a fellow tenant, in the string of shops in Melina’s building, is found murdered in the same fashion as the landlady. Who would be cruel enough to incriminate Melina, along with her BFF and neighbor, BettyJo Seever, in the crimes? Who’s next on the killers list, and why?

The answers are beyond her reach. Melina finds she’s out of her depth and drowning ever so slowly in the deaths that surround her. Can she and BettyJo prove their innocence before Detective Graham charges them both with conspiracy to commit, murder resulting?   Will they reveal the culprit and find the proof needed to put these deaths to rest?

It’s only after Aidan joins the hunt, that Melina comes face to face with the person responsible for the killings. Fearful that she’s about to become victim number three, Melina takes the killer head on.

Chapter One

Crusty bread protruded for her mouth, a dreadful halo of dark red blood pooled around her head. But, it wasn’t a halo. It was a nightmare scene before me. I peered closer touching the bit of bread. My fingers brushed her skin. I gasped and jumped back. Mrs. Peterson was dead.

I stumbled back, tripping over my own feet in haste to escape the gruesome sight of my landlady. Somebody had dealt her a blow, more than one, judging by the amount of blood on the floor. I scanned the shadowy room for the instrument of death and wondered how to handle this disaster.

“Are you coming back soon? BettyJo has a problem with her bread dough,” a student called from the door of BettyJo’s shop. I’d gone to fetch her cell phone while she prepared her sour dough for baking.

Lost in thought, the words slowly penetrated my brain. “Uh, I’ll be right there,” I called. My voice sounded as wobbly as my knees felt. I grabbed BettyJo’s cell phone off the table and hurried out the door.

When I’d rejoined the class, five people stared at me. No one uttered a sound, at first. Then all hell broke loose.

Madeline, a realtor who needed something less stressful to deal with than real estate in a poor economy, appeared startled. “Are you all right? You’re very pale, Melina,” she remarked.

Aidan, the man of my dreams, stepped forward. He laid a flour covered hand on my arm and said with his Scottish accent, “Lass, you’d best sit down.”

BettyJo, not one to be easily excited, asked, “Was there a problem finding the phone?”

“N-no, it’s Mrs. Peterson. She’s over there,” I thumbed in the direction of her store. “And she’s dead.” That’s when I passed out cold.

Sometime later, I awoke on the floor, a cold, soggy cloth draped across my forehead. Students huddled, gaping, and a worried BettyJo was on the phone.

When I began to rise, Aidan grasped my arms and lifted me to my feet. He motioned to a chair. I gladly slumped into it.

“Lass,” Aidan said with a worried look. “Are ya fine, now?” He handed me a glass of water.

I nodded and tossed the wet cloth onto the table. I sucked in a deep breath and stared at the concerned faces around me.

“I’m fine, really. Just shocked at finding Mrs. Peterson dead.” I murmured, “Who could have done such a ghastly thing to her?”

Heads shook, shoulders shrugged, they hadn’t a clue who Mrs. Peterson was. After all, other than BettyJo, she wasn’t their landlady, was she?

Though shaken by my find, BettyJo insisted that she and I go to her shop. As reluctant as I was, I refused to allow her to go alone. The students hung about, waiting to see what would happen next. I asked that they return to working their dough and said we’d be right back.

As BettyJo and I reached the door, I found Aidan was hot on our heels.

I glanced at him. His concerned face told me he didn’t intend for us to go alone.

“I’ll be going with you on this,” he said.

The three of us strode toward BettyJo’s back door.

Review

I really liked this mystery. I can say the killer is not someone I would have every figured out and the why is even crazier. I can’t wait to see what the 2nd book in this series is like and how it continues the story.

I just realized I have read another book by this author that I really enjoyed called Tangled to Death and I even another book on my Kindle to read. This is definitely an author to check out.

Dark secrets lie just below the surface of the small town of Lake Porker, Texas. The long-time, yet much-despised mayor has been keeping his job by means of rigging elections with the help of the town clerk, a highly respected woman who secretly happens to be the mayor’s dominatrix lover. The man that most of the town thinks is a successful stock day trader is actually a methamphetamine kingpin. His drop-dead beautiful and supposedly devoted God-fearing wife is not only plotting to kill him and take over his meth empire, but she’s having sex with everyone and anyone she thinks will be helpful in advancing that goal. The new African-American deputy is drawing the ire of the town rednecks and is secretly involved in a May – December romance with the sheriff’s wife. Then there’s Octavio, the oversexed freshwater octopus bred by the brilliant and lonely fish hatchery scientist who has trained him in the ways of pleasure and has taken him as her lover.

The giant octopus periodically escapes the fish breeding lab and roams the lake looking for other targets for his sexual talents, much to the confusing combination of arousal and horror in his victims. Octavio can’t be kept secret forever, and soon he attracts the attention of a cryptozoologist and documentary film producer and his intrepid cameraman out to make their next hit reality television special. All of this plays out in an absurd, darkly comedic romp filled with sex, drugs, and violence.

Welcome to the cold, sticky embrace of The Eight Fingered Fiend Of Lake Porker!

Prologue

It’s homecoming for Abdullah “Abs” White.  The long-time Dallas police officer has moved back to his hometown of Lake Porker, Texas to take a job with the town sheriff’s department.  The return to Lake Porker is not really by preference though.  Abs liked his job in Dallas, but his widower father is getting up in years and Abs decided it was time to move back home so he could help his father as needed.

The African-American lawman knows that the transition won’t be easy.  Abs originally left Lake Porker right after high school because he longed for the big city where there was more excitement and less racism – at least overt racism anyway.   He’s prepared for the fact that there’s still a significant number of the townspeople who are not going to take kindly to a black deputy.

But there’s a lot that Abs isn’t prepared for.  Things could get pretty weird on the mean streets of Dallas and he thinks he’s seen it all in his years as a cop, but that’s about to change.  The sleepy little town of Lake Porker holds some deep, dark secrets, and Abs is about to run headlong into them!

Review

I have to say this book was quite a surprise!  I’m not sure what I was expecting when I read the synopsis, but I’m pretty sure I wasn’t expecting satire!  Now if you are like me and weren’t 100% sure what the definite of satire is, here it is for you:

Satire is a technique employed by writers to expose and criticize foolishness and corruption of an individual or a society by using humor, irony, exaggeration or ridicule. It intends to improve the humanity by criticizing its follies and foibles. A writer in a satire uses fictional character, which stands for real people to expose and condemn their corruption.

A writer may point a satire toward a person, a country or even the entire world. Usually, a satire is a comical piece of writing which makes fun of an individual or a society to expose its stupidity and shortcomings. In addition, he expects that whosoever he criticizes improves his character by overcoming his weaknesses.

The author was right on the money with how he depicted the small town residents.  These characters could have been in any small town, but they were in Texas and since I’m in Texas and have lived in a small town in the past, I felt like I was stepping back in the past.  Sort of like when I saw Greater Tuna on stage.  I couldn’t help but laugh at the antics of the mayor and the sheriff and even BettyJo (BJ).  Helga was an interesting twist, she really wasn’t like the other towns folks.  I liked the interaction between the characters and how BJ was not beyond getting what she wanted by using her body.  I also thought it was interesting that (as like in a small town) everyone knew everyone else’s business, but there were a few that were still clueless.

We give this book 4 paws.

Thousand perfect things

A Thousand Perfect Things

In this epic new work, the award-winning Kenyon, whose work has be compared to Larry Nivens and Stephen R. Donaldson, creates an alternate Earth in the 19th century. This Earth is ruled by two warring factions—scientific Anglica (England) and magical Bharata (India).

Tori Harding, a Victorian woman, whose heart aches to claim the legendary powers of the golden lotus, must leave her reasoned world behind and journey to Bharata. In pursuit of the golden lotus, Tori will be forced to brave its magics, intrigues, deadly secrets and haunted places, to claim her destiny and choose between two lovers in two irreconcilable realms.

As a great native insurrection sweeps the continent of Bharata—Tori will find the thing she most desires, beautifully flawed and more wonderfully strange than she could have ever dreamed.

Praise for A Thousand Perfect Things

“This has become my favorite of all Kay Kenyon’s books. The science-driven men of Anglica have constructed a marvel of engineering-a bridge that crosses the ocean-but they don’t understand the mystical forces they’re facing in the dangerously seductive country of Bharata. As usual, Kenyon offers flawless world-building and a diverse cast of characters driven by conflicting and wholly believable desires. This is a rich, gorgeous, and marvelously detailed tapestry of a book.”
— Sharon Shinn, Author of Troubled Waters and Royal Airs

“Kay Kenyon has once again created a world into which one blissfully disappears, replete with magic and monsters, romance and reigning dynasties, set upon the fragile social scaffolding of mid-nineteenth century England. The story is, literally and figuratively, a bridge between the mystical and the very real, with a young heroine who a delivers a deliciously vicarious ride. Brilliantly told with elegant yet occasionally jarring prose, A Thousand Perfect Things is a masterwork from the mind of one of our best authors of compelling alternate realities.”
— Larry Brooks, Author of Story Engineering

Review

Such a cute romance novella. Olivia is a wannabe actress and lands a roll on a home improvement show (similar to Love it or List it on HGTV). The cohost, William, is the realtor (who thinks he is a god) and she is the designer. Sure she has a background in it, but she really isn’t the designer, but rather has to put up with a designer with a HUGE ego!  Pete is the hunky contractor that believe in her more than she believes in herself.  He also has dreams for his life and started a non-profit organization to help remodel homes for those with family members with disabilities but without the means to do the repairs themselves.

We really enjoyed the first book in this series and give it 5 paws up!

Fortune Cafe

The Fortune Café

a novel in three parts

MIS-FORTUNE: Emma, a waitress at The Fortune Café will do anything to avoid opening a fortune cookie. Each fortune is rumored to somehow magically come true. Being a girl grounded in reality, she doesn’t have time for that kind of nonsense. But when trying to prevent a food fight at the café, Emma accidently cracks open a fortune cookie: “Look around, love is trying to catch you.” If there is one thing that Harrison, her former best friend in high school is good at, it’s catching her unaware.

LOVE, NOT LUCK: Lucy has always been lucky . . . until her parents meet her fiancé’s parents at a disastrous lunch at The Fortune Café, and she breaks her lucky jade necklace. Even worse, her fortune cookie reveals that “True love is for the brave, not the lucky.” How is she supposed to read that? She’s always considered it lucky how she met her fiancé. But after breaking her necklace, Lucy’s luck takes a dive. And when her fiancé dumps her, the only person she can turn to is Carter, the unluckiest guy she knows.

TAKEOUT: Stella is content in her new life of taking over her mom’s jewelry shop. No more boyfriend to worry about, and as long as she stays busy, she doesn’t have to dwell on her non-existent love life. When Evan comes into the shop with his young daughter, Stella is charmed. But she is reluctant to complicate her straightforward life, so when she reads her fortune after ordering takeout from The Fortune Café, she completely ignores it. After all, how can a fortune as vague as “Do the thing you fear and love is certain,” apply to her?
