Deadly Fun

Deadly Fun by Pam Richter

To everyone aboard the luxury cruise ship, Dan and Linda Duncan are the perfect couple; married, gorgeous, and in love. But Lo is actually working in disguise and undercover, with an assumed identity. She routinely uses her unusual beauty to seek out information for an independent detective agency associated with the FBI. Her boss understands she has a checkered past, with time spent in prison, but she’s also smart, and has a law degree.
During this investigation of a deadly enforcer for the Mob, they discover murderous ties to Linda’s own family. By the end of the voyage she has chased suspects through the tropical islands, been in physical confrontations with knife, fist and firearms; the deck is awash in blood.
Can she survive the deadly fun cruise—and her boss—who may prove more deadly than the Mafia men she uncovers?

Excerpt

Being weak was such a new experience Lo was bewildered by her body, which she’d always been able to rely on.  One thing she knew for sure…Dan had been in a knife fight.

After she heard the nurse’s footsteps leave down the hallway, Lo struggled to stand again.  And then Dan was in the doorway.  He rushed over to her, held her arms, held her up, looking deeply into her eyes and then pulled her into a great hug.  They stood like that for a long time.  He felt so warm.  Lo didn’t know how cold she was until she felt his arms around her.  She breathed and let the warmth envelope her.  It was so deeply wonderful.

“You always were too handsome,” Lo said.  She could feel him laughing as he held her.  “That scar will look so rakish, all the girls will swoon.”

Praise from Amazon Reviewers

A fun read, yes. Darkness, danger, and death lurk within the labyrinth of corridors, passageways, and public attractions spread throughout the upper and lower decks of a large cruise ship.

Exciting, page turning! Passengers with hidden identities and agenda. Mafia mayhem. A little romance and a lot of action. Pamela Richter keeps you wanting more.

Deadly Fun was a fabulous book. I loved how the characters were so easy to fall in love with. I felt like I was reading a wonderful spy adventure that took place on a cruise ship. Who says it is against the rules to fall in love with a co-worker. Lo and Lance fight their feelings for one another over the course of this book.

Review

What a fun and great start to a new series. I love that it is about dogs and a dog spa…and that owners are called pet parents. As I was reading, I tried to figure out who the killer might be.  I had a few guesses but this character never hit my radar as being the killer.   The author does a good job of not revealing too much for you to guess the killer until he/she is revealed at the end.  I think there is a nice love story in the mix too! Well the start of one anyway.  It will be interesting to see where it goes.

We give this book 4 paws and look forward to the second book.

As a private investigator, she was accustomed to facing unpleasant situations and sifting through others’ lives. Unfortunately, this time to do that, she had to face her own.
Soon, she herself is being followed. A handsome stranger insinuates himself in her life. Everything she believed and thought she knew is called into question beginning with…can she turn her curse into a gift?

I love the Psychic Eye series by Victoria Laurie!  I don’t know what it is about this series, but it has grabbed my interest and I look forward to each new book.  I am a little behind as this is book 11 which came out in 2013 and book 12, Fatal Fortune is due out July 1st…in just a few weeks!!

deadly forecast

Synopsis

As her wedding day approaches, Abby Cooper has a disturbing premonition of her fiancé’s murder. Her husband-to-be, FBI agent Dutch Rivers, has been assigned to a suicide bombing case, and Abby’s spirit guides warn her of imminent danger. Abby vows to do everything in her power to keep Dutch safe and get him to the altar. But on the morning of the ceremony, she finds herself in a dire situation with time running out.

Review

LOVED it!!!  Abbey & Dutch are FINALLY getting married…or are they?  They are pulled into a case during the two weeks prior to their wedding and the way things are going they may not make it to the altar.

This book has a different format than the previous books – it flips back and forth between 2 weeks prior and the wedding day.  It took a little bit to get used to the format, but once I got in the groove I had a hard time putting the book down.  There is a lot of action and it kept me on the edge of my seat wondering if they would figure out who the killer was before time ran out (and it was quite the surprise as to who the killer was, I definitely didn’t see this one coming!)

We give this book 5 paws

moving day

Synopsis

Forty years’ accumulation of art, antiques, and family photographs are more than just objects for Stanley Peke—they are proof of a life fully lived. A life he could have easily lost long ago.

When a con man steals his houseful of possessions in a sophisticated moving-day scam, Peke wanders helplessly through his empty New England home, inevitably reminded of another helpless time: decades in Peke’s past, a cold and threadbare Stanislaw Shmuel Pecoskowitz eked out a desperate existence in the war-torn Polish countryside, subsisting on scraps and dodging Nazi soldiers. Now, the seventy-two-year-old Peke—who survived, came to America, and succeeded—must summon his original grit and determination to track down the thieves, retrieve his things, and restore the life he made for himself.

Peke and his wife, Rose, trace the path of the thieves’ truck across America, to the wilds of Montana, and to an ultimate, chilling confrontation with not only the thieves but also with Peke’s brutal, unresolved past.

Review

The concept/plot for this book is great – a con man steals people’s possessions that are moving. However this time he messed with the wrong person, a 72 year old survivor from Germany.

The book is pretty well written, but there are times where it just seems to ramble on and there isn’t a clear picture of why the author chose that moment to flash back.

There are some surprises with Peke’s kids, one that I never suspected near the end, that’s for sure!

I would give this 3 1/2 paws.  I think there are some minor editing/rewriting that would improve the book but it is still enjoyable.

Synopsis

British hotelier Ian Gregson had it all – wealth, good looks, power, and a share in his family’s worldwide, multi-billion dollar luxury hotel chain. His very name was synonymous with sophistication and elegance, and any woman he wanted could be his with just a look. But the only woman he truly desired was strictly forbidden to him for too many reasons to count.

Tessa Lockwood was young, beautiful, and lonely, despite the fact that she was a married woman. Her life had not been an easy one, and the extravagant world she caught glimpses of as an employee of the Gregson Hotel Group was far beyond anything she could ever dream of. She could no more imagine herself ensconced in that sort of luxurious lifestyle than she could attracting the attention of her handsome, debonair boss. Ian and Tessa secretly long for each other from afar, never daring to reveal their forbidden attraction to the other, until circumstances bring them together in a very unexpected way. And from that point on, nothing will stand in Ian’s way to finally make her his.

AUTHOR’S NOTE – despite what you might be thinking at this point, there is NO cheating in this story – just an incredibly romantic hero who will make you swoon with the way in which he sweeps the heroine off her feet.

Review

This was a fun read.  Brook may be a counselor but that doesn’t mean she knows how to take her own advice when her own relationship goes south.  It doesn’t help that a lot of things happen at once to throw Brook for a loop – news from her parents, losing her office, her relationship with her boyfriend.

The book is well written and I think any of us could see ourselves in her shoes.  The book captured my interest from the first chapter and I’m not sure if she is going to write more about the other people in the book (like Sasha) but I will definitely be looking for my books by this author.

We give this book 4 paws up!

Today’s edition of Mystery Monday brings you a book by author Stone Patrick called The Fallen Body.  I really do like it when authors contact me about their books (despite my current backlog) because there are so many great authors out there that just need a little exposure.  So I like to help out when I can and of course when the book is set in Texas (where I live) I usually want to read it because I want to see if they get it right.  I have to say that Stone got it right (which I would hope since he lives in North Texas!)….and it was really neat to see my alma mater mentioned in the book – Texas Wesleyan University.  That was quite the surprise and it was just a quick reference to a character, but honestly, how many authors mention small universities that are real?  Ok, so I don’t go check out all universities mentioned in books, but I always assume they aren’t “real” schools.

Anyway, check out this book if you have the chance.

Review

This book was quite the surprise mostly from some of the references, but because it drew me in right from the start.  I wondered about Sarah and turns out my inklings were somewhat correct about her.  I like how Taylour took an interest in her nephew and let him move in with her for the short term while things at home for him were sorted out with his father and pregnant step-mother.  There is one character that disappeared that I wish had been resolved or mentioned what happened to this person.  I thought the characters were all pretty well developed, the mystery/suspense kept me on the edge of my seat and there was just a hint at romance to round out the story.

I am not sure if this will be a series or not, but I could see it turning into more books in this town of Malinsville – it is close enough to the Dallas/Fort Worth area that the author can bring in action from the “big city” as he did in this book.

We give it 4 paws up!

Synopsis

Sometimes life smacks you right in the kisser with a whole lot of ohhhh craaaaap.  Just ask Darcy Walker.

100 Proof Stud picks up four months after No Brainer’s cliffhanger ending, and Darcy discovers the aftermath pales in comparison to the crisis her heart is in. All of a sudden it’s raining men, and this teenage heroine’s personal life turns her inside out.

Before she can sort out her feelings, she chases a spray-painting vandal and stumbles upon a case of identity theft right in her own backyard. Darcy jumps into the fray headfirst to prove she can hang with the big boys.

But it’s not just to hang…nope, she’s chasing reward money.

Tapping her band of misfit brothers for help, she turns Valley upside down trying to unearth the criminals. Problem is, the cloak and dagger goes high-octane, and she raises the bar on “crazy” in the process.

Bullets ring out…dead bodies appear…and Darcy rubs shoulders with the ultimate sociopath. In the midst of murder and mayhem, will she finally follow her heart or build a fortress of lies around it? Will she even get the chance?

Review

Darcy is a typical teenager, or is at least portrayed that way.  More concerned about having an iPhone than making good grades despite her high IQ.  Then there is the usual teenage angst.  I will say that Darcy does have some great one-liners and I do get a chuckle out of those.  There were some unanswered questions (for me anyway) in books one and two that were answered in this installment.  It is also good to see Darcy continue to flourish and even grow up a little bit from book to book.  The book does jump around a lot and it left me feeling like I needed Ritalin.

This is the third book in the series with Grade A Stupid and No Brainer as the first two.  I will say that I personally thought that Grade A Stupid was about 100 pages too long (it is 424 pages).  No Brainer improved on the page count somewhat and the writing seemed to flow better.  This book was almost as long as the first book at 397 pages and really could have been trimmed back by 50 pages or more and would have been just as good.

We give this 3 1/2 paws.  The books are good but sometimes if felt like there was just too much…maybe I just have low tolerance for teenage antics?!  If you do check out this series definitely start at the beginning to get a sense for Darcy and the gang.
