“Yuck.”

Pretty much covered the whole freakin’ day.

A blinding red-white, red-white strobe, reflected in my brand new Wrangler’s rearview mirror, seized my attention. The police. I tossed my hands skyward, ready to surrender. I shouldn’t have been too surprised. Like I’d commented this a.m. to my roommate, Jenny, “Today, anything’s possible.”

My Bad Day checklist included:

– Crappy job interview, one which might have provided desperately needed income.

– Wore gut-busting panty hose on a hot day which had now worked past my waist and strangled my diaphragm.

– A barely blowing air conditioner indicated something had malfunctioned in my new, fun car.

I stole another glance in the mirror, and with great reluctance, flipped the right turn indicator. My vehicle coasted to a stop on the shoulder of Boston Avenue in my hometown of Sommerville, a nice suburb located between two large cities. Four lanes of cars and trucks zipped by as I sat there where every single one of my family, friends, friends’ friends, and their friends—including Rat Fink Suzanne—would see a police vehicle positioned right behind mine. Gleefully, drivers would chant the “Ha-ha, got you, not me” ditty.

How embarrassing.

After killing the engine, I flopped back in the seat. Shooting the morons the finger was an idea. Nah. I’m too exhausted to care.

A litany of: “No, not hiring.” “Just filled the position.” “You’re over qualified.” “You’re under qualified…” tornadoed through my head. Coupled with the intense job search through various outlets like the internet and completing numerous online employment applications, no wonder my body had been depleted of all life force.

Not even a breeze blew to take the edge off the unbearable summertime heat. Tangled wild trees and dry scrubby bushes banked the roadside. The grass had taken on a scorched look. Rolling down the driver’s window, I surveyed my surroundings. Nothing great. Nothing new.

I stole a glance in the side mirror at the policeman who strode purposefully along the shoulder. The gravel crunched under his boots. He looked huge, probably because his uniform, which appeared to be bulked with a bullet-proof vest, made him resemble a buffed-up superhero in size. Exceedingly intimidating.

Sigh. When things went wrong, they were really wrong.

Review

This is a combination of a pretty clean romance story (just 1 almost sex scene) and a smidge of a mystery.

Hattie is pulled over by a police officer, turns out her bumper has been stolen. on top of that he writes her a citation….that isn’t where the fun ends, he is the older brother of her best friend from high school and he is not the same geeky boy he was then. He has grown up and is quite hunky! Of course as you expect, they are attracted to each other and stumble around trying to figure out their relationship.

I thought it was a bit odd that she calls him A. Wellborn. Now I get why, he is a police officer and that is how he signed the citation, but why not refer to him by his name, Allan? Maybe that is how she kept him at bay and kept her feelings for him downplayed?

The mystery part is tied to her temp job at the insurance company. It isn’t too hard to figure out that there is something suspicious going on, but I was a little surprised at how it all played out. kept me on the edge of my seat when that portion came to a conclusion.

All in all I really enjoyed the book and wonder if there will be a second one because of the way the book ended. It does leave you hanging but you can probably guess how it will turn out. I hope there is a second book (at least) so I can see if Hattie remains working with the temp agency or if she goes back to her love of being a buyer for retail stores. And of course what is her relationship with A. Wellborn (aka Allan)?

We give this 4 paws up

~ Book Synopsis ~

Seventeen-year-old Josie is studying journalism and ends up at Sash magazine to do an internship. Josie has little enthusiasm for fashion and wants to be a serious journalist. But she has little choice. It’s Sash or the local cat fancier’s magazine.

Once at Sash, Josie comes to grips with the fact that the fashion industry isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. Plus she has to contend with her fellow interns and the editor, Rae, who is in charge and arbitrary – one day Josie’s her hot new favorite, the next, who knows?

Country girl Josie also has to get used to living in the city, and sharing a small flat with her cousin Tim, and his hotter-than-hot roommate James, is an education. Things come to a head at Sash when Josie manages to connect with Billy, a troubled rock star. But a disastrous episode at a nightclub and the fallout on social media causes Josie to wake up and see the real person behind his glamorous front.

Josie starts to wonder if she’ll ever get the journalistic break she longs for …

Excerpt

Most girls I knew, like Kat, spent their allowances or pay on make-up, jewellery, fashion, music, phone credit and magazines.  For me, magazines were a sparkly fantasy filled with smiling, shiny people who looked too happy all the time.

That didn’t stop me from leafing through Kat’s magazines when she was out, but instead of checking out the fashion I was reading the feature stories, scoping out who wrote them and looking for spelling mistakes.

I’d studied hard at high school for six years because I was destined to be a news journalist at a newspaper or radio station. So it had come as a huge shock to everyone, including me, to discover I would be interning at a magazine as part of my uni degree’s second semester.  And not just any magazine. I’d been signed up to (translation: pushed into) a one-day-a-week internship at one of the hottest women’s magazines in the country, Sash.

When I told Kat my news, she was thirteen per cent excited for me and eighty-seven per cent envious. In her world, my inability to use a curling iron meant I didn’t deserve the intern position. Her warning of ‘Don’t say anything stupid to the Sash girls and ruin my chances of working there one day’ hadn’t filled me with confidence.

Unless I underwent the world’s first personality transplant between here and the city, I knew I’d find a way to put my high-heeled foot in it.

Foreign Exchange

By Denise Jaden

Evernight Teen Contemporary/Mystery

Jamie Monroe has always played it safe. That is, until her live-for-the-moment best friend, Tristan, jets off to Italy on a student exchange program. Left alone with her part-time mother and her disabled brother, Jamie discovers that she is quite capable of taking her own risks, starting with her best friend’s hotter-than-hot older brother, Sawyer. Sawyer and Tristan have been neighbors for years, but as Jamie grows closer to the family she thought she knew, she discovers some pretty big secrets.

As she sinks deeper into their web of pretense, she suspects that her best friend may not be on a safe exchange program at all. Jamie sets off to Europe on a class trip with plans to meet up with Tristan, but when Tristan stops all communication, suddenly no one seems trustworthy, least of all the one person she was starting to trust—Sawyer.

Exclusive Excerpt

From the author:

The following is one of my favorite excerpts from Foreign Exchange. It’s the first time that Jamie really takes a risk to let her neighbor Sawyer know she likes him.

Unfortunately when Jamie invited Sawyer over, she didn’t realize both her mother and her disabled brother would be keeping them company. But Jamie has some questions for Sawyer about the foreign exchange program her best friend is on, so that may be enough diversion to keep any romance or flirting at bay.

Or maybe not.

The Excerpt

I take a seat beside Sawyer and scoot my chair an inch toward him.

He has his computer open, but of course he has no idea why I wanted him to bring it. We don’t have any World Architecture homework, other than a small section of reading from our textbooks. The computer takes the romantic pressure off, though. Then again, my mother does that in spades.

Since I don’t know what else to do, I figure I’ll double check that the email for the foreign exchange program won’t work from his computer either. I’ve had things bounce back to my inbox before, so it could be a problem on my end. Probably not on Jennifer’s end as well, but it doesn’t hurt to triple-confirm.

“Can you open your email for a sec?” I say.

He lets out a breathy laugh and reaches for the mouse. “Sure.” After a second he asks what feels like a question that he doesn’t want to ask, but he just can’t let it go. “Checking up on me?”

I hadn’t even thought about that. But now that he mentions it, I feel the urge to have a peek at whom he’s been corresponding with.

“No,” I say with as much surprise as I can muster. “You can even open a new email and I won’t look at your junk if you’d prefer.”

“My junk?” he says, laughing.

My face instantly heats to a thousand degrees. Thankfully I don’t have to reply because Mom pads back down the stairs.

I get a glimpse of his inbox, and don’t see much, other than a few messages from names I don’t recognize, and that one message from Tristan. He opens a new email, and then angles the computer to face me.

“This is what I was thinking,” I say for Mom’s benefit. I angle the computer a little more toward me and try to keep my elbows in while typing in the email address for the foreign exchange program. Then I type a quick test message in the body.

By the time I hit Send, Mom is busy hovering over Eddy, making sure I’ve been doing my sisterly duty, and grilling him on whether he’s eaten and gone to the bathroom lately.

“This email’s been bouncing back,” I say quietly to Sawyer.

He scoots sideways—toward me—trying to see the screen better. Our knees touch.

Sawyer sees whom I’m writing to and navigates in his browser to the foreign exchange program’s Web site. He checks the contact info, pretty much the exact same thing I did earlier.

But then he does something I didn’t do. He clicks a few places on the screen and somehow brings up the code of the site. I don’t have a clue about coding, but Sawyer helped Tristan design her modeling Web site, so he must know what he’s looking for.

Or maybe he doesn’t. After a few seconds, he sits back in his chair with his eyebrows furrowed. Our knees are still touching.

While he thinks, I have an idea. I open a new Word document and type:

This isn’t what I had in mind for tonight. So sorry!

Then, for Mom’s benefit, I point to the words and say, “What do you think of this?”

Sawyer leans in to look at the screen. I watch for his reaction. A smile plays at the edges of his lips. He reaches up to the keys and types:

What did you have in mind?

He rubs his lips together like he’s trying to keep his smile at bay. My face has barely paled from my moment of talking about his “junk” and I can feel it darkening again.

I put my hands on the keys to type, but I have no idea what to say. I don’t have sexy comebacks and the confidence to go with them like he does. I do better when I can show someone what I mean. And so I type:

More something like this…

I’ve typed it. I’m halfway there, and I’m mentally running my mantra of taking risks like mad. I suck in a breath, move my hand under the table, behind the tablecloth, and place it gently on his leg about mid-thigh.

He looks down. At my hand. On his thigh. I’m leaving it there, being clear I meant to do it. I need to at least try something with Sawyer before I decide I won’t like this, whatever it is. And so far, I admit, I am liking it.

I wait a long time—hours, maybe days—for him to react. I must have had it wrong and he was just being friendly. Maybe because he noticed I was sad and introverted after Tristan left, he felt obligated to rescue me. But still, I’m not pulling away. I can’t believe I’m here doing this, taking a huge risk with Sawyer, while Tristan’s away focusing on her academics. Maybe it’s an exchange program for both of us.

As I’m thinking this, Mom promises Eddy milk and heads for the kitchen. My hand is hidden by the tablecloth and now both of our eyes are on the computer screen, though I doubt either of us is rereading what’s on there.

When she’s through the door, it happens. He takes his hand off the table, moves it down, toward mine, and I’m wondering if he’ll place his over mine…or if he’ll move it up his thigh. Or if he’ll pull it away and give me a look that ensures I’ll never, ever, be able to look him in the face again.

But he reaches past my hand, over to my leg, and gently—so gently—places his fingertips there. He doesn’t just rest his hand there like me. He circles his fingers slowly on my thigh, and goose bumps run all the way up my body, up my arms, along my neck, into my hair. I’ve never felt a sensation like this. A sensation so good.

And then my mother has to wreck it.

She doesn’t just walk through the kitchen door, she bangs through it, milk in hand, and I swear, the sudden noise gives me a headache.

I instantly pull my hand away, and Sawyer does too.

Mom sighs, a loud huffy sigh, when she hands Eddy his milk, making sure the sippy lid is on tight. Then she murmurs something that sounds like, “I wish I could just go to bed.”

Of course she can’t go to bed. She has to babysit her sixteen-year-old who’s doing homework with her neighbor.

Okay, maybe she does need to babysit me, because I have a pretty good idea of where this might lead if she wasn’t here. But the truth is, anything I’m going to do, I’ll find a way to do behind her back. If she hasn’t scared Sawyer away from me for the rest of eternity, that is.

I put my hands up to the keys and type, without stopping to think about any of it first.

I feel like a friggin’ two-year-old. She won’t go to bed while you’re here. I know I’m sixteen and I should tell her that, but I really need to be careful, with my trip to Spain coming up, and I don’t want her sticking Eddy in a daycare with twenty other kids and workers who don’t know or care how to look after him.

I’m embarrassed by my rant, but I can’t help myself. I’ve been holding in so many of these thoughts for too long.

I stare at the screen, with my hands now balled in front of me in defeat.

Sawyer lifts his hands to the keys, and I’m sure it’s to tell me that he has to go, but he doesn’t type. At first I think I’m imagining it, but I watch his fingers and they go round and round lightly over the keys of his left hand, not actually pressing any keys, but just circling. The same hand that had moments ago been circling my thigh.

My whole body gets shivers again, just from watching him. My eyes are transfixed on his hand. His perfect, beautiful, smooth fingers that he won’t touch any other girls with. Finally he stops and types:

For the record, I don’t think you’re anything like a two-year-old.

I stare at the words and swallow.

His hands are still in place, and he types some more.

I get it. Sometimes parents are just…not people we’re proud of.

I look at him. He meets my eyes, smiles a little, but it’s a sad smile. He types again.

I probably should go, though. Your mom’s just going to get more irritated and then she’ll take it out on you and Eddy.

My smile turns sad too. Then he adds:

It’s not like we can’t do this again.

After a pause:

Right?

Like I said, I’m better at showing things than with words. I slip my hand under the table, onto his leg, and lightly stroke up and down a few inches along his rough jeans. Moving my hand on him is a whole new sensation, at least for me. And I suspect for him too. His eyes close for an ultra-long blink.

I lift my hand away and type:

Absolutely.

Synopsis

Two strangers. One clandestine wedding. Many hidden stories.

Discouraged by his limited prospects and tired of trying to find a bride in a traditional manner, Elias Wheeler places an advertisement requesting a mail-order bride and mother for his young daughter. Rebecca Malone, eager to escape an abusive past, travels to Montana to become Elias’s wife despite only exchanging a few letters. Learning to care for one another proves easy; learning to trust proves much more difficult. Elias and Rebecca must navigate the waters of blending families while learning to depend on one another with confidence, loving support, and faith. Together they must learn to rely on each other and what they hope to build while accepting that perfection isn’t the goal; love is.

Excerpt

Montana, 1888

Elias stood nervously waiting for the train to pull into the station.  He looked down the tracks for any indication that the wait was almost over.  Of course the train was running late.  This, the biggest day of his life, had him pacing and constantly wiping the sweat from his palms onto his trousers.  Maybe I should have dressed a little better, he thought, knowing that his everyday work clothes certainly weren’t fit to greet his future bride.  But he’d run out of time this morning, and he couldn’t very well head to town in his one good suit without arousing suspicions with his family.  He wanted this to be a surprise. He needed this to be a surprise for the simple fact that his family would likely try to talk him out of it.  Nobody in their small town of Hollow, Montana had gone the route of taking a mail order bride, and Elias knew they would likely judge him for not finding a bride in a more traditional manner.
He had tried the traditions of courting and marriage before, with little success.  He married his sweetheart Rachel when he was 20 years old out of equal parts love and obligation, and their relationship ended when she died shortly after their daughter, Lottie, was born.  He later learned of Rachel’s infidelity and confirmed the fact that Lottie was not his blood child.  He didn’t care one bit if she was his; he was her father and he cherished her more than anything in this world.   But she needed a mother.  At just eight years old, Lottie was taking on too much responsibility caring for him.  Elias didn’t want her to feel obligated to take care of his needs.  She needed to run and play and make her own adventures in the vast fields of their cattle ranch. She didn’t need to spend her days doing laundry or cooking his meals. She needed to learn and grow as a child was meant to do. And it was this need that drove him to look for a mail order bride.
Elias looked down the tracks again. Nothing. Several other families seemed just as anxious as he was for the train to arrive. Perhaps they had relatives coming to visit. Maybe they were waiting for a special package or shipment to arrive. He noticed that no other single men stood there waiting for the train.  Of course he didn’t recognize several folks waiting on the platform, so it was possible he wasn’t the only one waiting for a woman. His small town had grown tremendously since the train set up station here just over a year ago.  New people were moving into town and setting up much needed businesses. They now had a dressmaker, a tailor, a hotel, several restaurants, a feed store, and a blacksmith. Two saloons had opened as well, though Elias didn’t appreciate the types of men and women they attracted. But the town appeared to be flourishing with new people and new opportunities.  They had recently completed construction on a new church, and a new schoolhouse would be built this spring.  Several folks had claimed their own homesteads to try their hand at ranching. None were as successful as Elias’s cattle ranch, but he appreciated having more neighbors for fellowship and assistance.
Despite the growth of the town, Elias had minimal luck finding a bride.  Most women who came to Hollow were already married and planning to settle. The ones raised here were either too young or too old to marry a widowed rancher.  That didn’t leave him many options.  He’d watched his brother marry his wife, Hetty, and their happiness was worthy of admiration.  In the five short years they’d been together they’d grown their family with three young boys and another child on the way.  They’d built a life together on a foundation of love and faith. Elias wanted the same thing…for himself and for his daughter.  If the train would ever arrive maybe he could make that happen.
He didn’t expect immediate love from his soon-to-be bride. They barely knew one another, after all.  But he hoped that with time their fondness for one another would grow and possibly turn into a relationship built on mutual respect and love.  He prayed that would be the case. Elias reached in his pocket and took out the advertisement he’d placed last year.
Widowed rancher seeks wife to share land and home in Montana.  Must be of moral character and possess a love of children.
He had received only one response from his advertisement from a young woman named Rebecca. She had written to him stating her desire to come west to settle and start a family. They had corresponded only a handful of times before he had sent her the necessary funds to travel from her home in Ohio to his home in Montana.  Elias had learned she was 22, had no family, and was used to the hard work of a ranch, having been raised on a farm herself.  She had described herself as rather plain, but Elias didn’t care.  Rachel had been beautiful, and look where it got him. Having a wife full of beauty wasn’t important; he cared more about what was on the inside – her character, her faith, and her ability to love and accept Lottie.
Elias nearly jumped from his skin when he heard a sound in the distance. The train? he thought. He removed his hat and ran his fingers through his light brown hair. He adjusted his shirt and used his fingers to remove a bit of dust sticking to his pants. In just a few minutes his future wife would step off the train.  He took a deep breath and smiled to himself. This was just the beginning.

Daddy Warbucks

Title: Finding Daddy Warbucks
Author: David Hwa
Publisher: Wellworth, LLC
Pages: 180
Genre: Christian Fiction
Format: Ebook

Synopsis

We never know how God may lead us. The twists and turns of life often leave us confused and deflated. For 10-year-old Haley, the unexpected loss of her father was such a twist. When all is lost, a little light in the darkness can make all the difference. The world is a big place for a little girl. For that matter, it’s a pretty big place for anyone who has lost their way.

Hayley finds her solution in a modern day prince, but she can’t pull off this miracle by herself. Nick, an attorney struggling to save his job, wouldn’t seem to be much help to a little girl trying to create a miracle. But life has a way of bringing us the people we need most, at just the right time. Still, there is so much that could go wrong, especially when her headstrong mother doesn’t fall for the prince. But there’s something Hayley doesn’t see coming, something she can’t see. Something she doesn’t want to see, something that hides in the dark where she can’t go, something unspeakable.

Follow Haley’s journey into the light and see how redemption is there for anyone, even the condemned. And see how love can find you-even through the darkness.

Excerpt

Hayley steps out of the 7-Eleven into the morning sun. Dressed in her National Academy tartan uniform, her giraffe backpack, Stanley, dangling off her shoulder she looks very much like a lost prep-school munchkin. Stanley looks a little tired today, but that’s normal for him. He has a short neck, very un-giraffe- like, but that doesn’t bother Hayley. She fell in love with him the first moment she saw him. She circles around the store to the side parking lot where a group of high school boys mill around with their skateboards smoking and laughing. She approaches the tallest one whose hair looks especially chaotic.

Review

This is a fun fast read. What happens when 3 kids go looking for a husband for their mom? Craziness, that’s what! Hayley is the ring leader and is in the 5th grade. She has a younger brother and sister who go along with things but she is the one that finds Nick and “Daddy Warbucks” who is actually Sir John, a wealthy business man. Hayley things that Sir John is the answer to the problem, but is he really? and is he ready to take on 3 kids?

there were some very funny/cute parts in this book and while it is labeled as Christian, I only recall a few paragraphs near the end where it references the Bible and a few verses. This is a sweet and clean story that will have you shaking your head at some of the kid’s antics and even the adults!

We give this 4 paws up!

Pageflex Persona [document: PRS0000032_00026]

Synopsis

When CIA agent Merry Wrath is “accidently” outted, she’s forced her into early retirement, changes her appearance, and moves where no one will ever find her—Iowa. Instead of black bag drops in Bangkok, she now spends her time leading a young Girl Scout troop. But Merry’s new simple life turns not-so-simple when an enemy agent shows up dead at scout camp. Suddenly Merry is forced to deal with her former life in order to preserve her future one.

It doesn’t help matters that the CIA sends in her former, sexy handler to investigate…or that the hot new neighbor across the street turns out to be the local detective in charge of her case. And when Merry is forced to take on a roommate in the voluptuous form of a turned KGB agent/bimbo, things become trickier than wet work in Waukegan or cookie sales in the spring. Nothing in the CIA or Girl Scouts’ training manuals has prepared her for what comes next…

For the first week this book is just $0.99 – a bargain!

Review

Leslie is one of my favorite authors and I think she has the makings of another hit series. I know it has to be hard to top the Bombay Assassins series (at least in my mind) but this book is full of similar wit and craziness that will have you hanging on until the very end.

The characters are a bit zany and I didn’t expect the curve thrown at the end as to who was the “evil” character. Merry is going to be an interesting character to watch, having to deal with her past as a spook with the CIA and trying to fit into suburbia with her best friend Kelly….which includes leading a girl scout troop. And there are even a couple of potential love interests for Merry….her ex-handler Riley and the hot detective, who also happens to be her neighbor, Rex.

I give this 5 paws up and can’t wait for the second book!

About the Author

Leslie Langtry is, in fact, a mom and a Girl Scout leader, but she has never assassinated anyone, either professionally or for recreation. Okay, she knits, but she almost never garrotes anyone with the circular needles. She loves puppies and cake (but she will not share her cake with puppies) and thinks praying mantids make everything better.

Instead, she lives with her husband, Tom, and two children, Margaret and Jack, in the Quad Cities – with no immediate plans to train either child as an assassin. She wants to make that perfectly clear.

Sure, Tom is a professional bodyguard, but he is not from Australia – nor has he ever been there. Seriously, he can’t even do the accent properly. And yes, she has a Pug (named Lucy) who has never, ever tried to seduce anything other than the sofa. She also has a basset hound and two cats – none of which possess any killer instincts whatsoever.

So there, you see, this book in no way mirrors Leslie Langtry’s life. That’s her story, and she’s sticking to it.

Leslie Langtry is the author of the Bombays Greatest Hits series, The Adulterer’s Unofficial Guide to Family Vacations, The Hanging Tree Tales as Max Deimos and several books she hasn’t finished yet, because she’s very lazy.

Leslie’s favorite color is orange and her favorite flavor is sugar.

The Murders at Astaire Castle

Genre: Mystery
Format: Paperback/Kindle

Mac Faraday Meets the Wolf Man!

Never tell Mac Faraday not to do something.

In The Murders at Astaire Castle, Spencer’s police chief, David O’Callaghan, learns this lesson the hard way when he orders Mac Faraday to stay away from the south end of Spencer’s mountaintop—even though he owns the property. It doesn’t take long for Mac to find out what lies on the other side of the stone wall and locked gate, on which hangs a sign warning visitors to Keep Out!

Topping the list of the ten most haunted places in America, Astaire Castle is associated with two suicides, three mysterious disappearances, and four murders since it was built almost a century ago—and Mac Faraday owns it!

In spite of David’s warning, Mac can’t resist unlocking the gate to see the castle that supposedly hasn’t seen a living soul since his late mother had ordered it closed up after the double homicide and disappearance of Damian Wagner, a world-famous master of horror novels.

“Halloween has always been a fun time,” best-selling author Lauren Carr explains in a note at the beginning of her fifth Mac Faraday mystery. “It’s the time to break out and be someone else. As a child, I would pretend to be one of the Bobbsey Twins searching for clues to lead me to a secret treasure. If I was lucky, it was made up of chocolate. As a teenager, I was Nancy Drew. Always, when October rolled around, I craved mysteries with something extra added—something beyond the normal—something supernatural. As an author, I couldn’t resist taking this one Mac Faraday Mystery on a scary Halloween adventure.”

In this latest installment of Carr’s hit series, what starts out as a quick tour of a dusty old castle turns into another Mac Faraday adventure when Astaire Castle becomes the scene of even more murders. Mac is going to need to put all of his investigative talents to work to sort out this case that involves the strangest characters he has run into yet—including a wolf man. No, we’re not talking about Gnarly.

Book Excerpt:

Prologue

November 2002 – Astaire Castle, top of Spencer Mountain, Deep Creek Lake, Maryland

Shivering, Rafaela turned up the fan for the heater in her old Plymouth. The weather channel was calling for snow. With an eye on the storm clouds heading straight for Spencer Mountain, she picked up the speed a notch. Her car bumped along the worn road cut through the trees and rock to take her to Astaire Castle.

The notion of being trapped at the castle by a winter storm made her curse the day she had accepted the job as housekeeper at the Astaire estate. The young illegal immigrant thought her prayers had been answered by landing the job at the luxurious estate. Not only was it prestigious to work in a castle, but lucrative since Damian Wagner was paying almost twice her normal hourly wage.

What a gem to put on my housekeeping resume! To be hire by only one of the world’s most famous authors of horror books—even more famous than Robin Spencer—to clean an honest-to-goodness castle. So what if the Astaire Castle has a reputation of being haunted? I’ll be making a bundle for cleaning five days a week in the daylight. Besides, I don’t believe in no ghosts.

Rafaela regretted her decision the first time she walked into Astaire Castle.

At first, she dismissed her cleaning supplies moving from where she had left them as forgetfulness. Then there was the time she kept hearing someone whispering her name. She had looked around, but never saw anyone. Same with doors closing or opening or footsteps coming up behind her, and the old-time music and party noises in empty rooms when no one was there—she tried to tell herself that it was all her imagination.

None of that was anything compared to the Wolf Man who she had seen in the dining room mirror while she was cleaning it.

She had heard all about the Wolf Man who lived in the woods surrounding Astaire Castle. The woman with two teenagers who lived in the apartment next to hers was quick to tell her about him. Rafaela had dismissed it all as ghost stories made up by her neighbor’s kids to scare her—until she had seen him with her own two eyes.

That day she ran out of the castle. She returned only after Genevieve, Damian Wagner’s daughter, had promised that her father finish his book and be moving out of the castle by the end of the year—at which time he would pay her a handsome bonus that would give her enough money to visit her family in Brazil for Christmas.

Rafaela caught her breath when her Plymouth entered through the gate at the end of the road to pull into the front courtyard and fountain.

The fountain was off. Damian Wagner had never bothered to turn it on. He wouldn’t notice if it was. He spent his time banging away on his computer in the study on the top floor. He wouldn’t eat if it weren’t for his daughter bringing food to him.

Then there was the editor—Mr. Jansen.

He reminded Rafaela of a bird with his bony frame, high cheekbones over a pointy chin, and thick eyeglasses with his blinking eyes magnified behind them. He sounded like a squawking bird with his high-pitched voice no matter what his mood or what he was saying. Ready to pounce in anticipation of any need from Damian Wagner, he was always lurking nearby.

Damian’s daughter, Genevieve, was as charming as beautiful. She often asked Rafaela about her family in Brazil and about her life in Deep Creek Lake. For the new immigrant to America, Rafaela felt as if she was making a friend who would give her good references for more housekeeping jobs in the resort town of Spencer—more millionaire estates to clean—estates that weren’t haunted.

Rafaela pulled her car around the circular drive and parked at the bottom of the steep steps that led to the front door. When she got out of her car, the wind howled and whipped her long dark hair around her head. The wind actually seemed to want to rip her thin coat off her body. Grabbing her box of cleaning supplies, she squared her shoulders, and sucked up her nerve to go inside.

Need to make this quick. They don’t have enough money to make me stay here during that storm.

The wind yanked the heavy wooden door from her grasp to slam it against the side of the house.

“Stupid door!” Rafaela set the box inside the foyer and went outside to grab the door and pull it shut. “Mr. Wagner! Mr. Jansen! Genevieve! It’s me, Rafaela! Hope I’m not disturbing you.” She picked up the box and made her way through the foyer.

“Raf-aela …”

She stopped. With wide eyes, she peered up the staircase to the second floor balcony. “Is that you, Mr. Wagner?” She paused to listen. “Genevieve?”

“Get out. Now.”

Has to be my imagination. She reassured herself. “There’s no such thing as ghosts. There’s no such thing as ghosts,” she muttered over and over to herself while hurrying to the back of the castle.

“I don’t suppose you had any trick-or-treaters last night, did you?” she called out to ease her nerves with the sound of her own voice. “Not up here I suppose.”

She waited for an answer. She heard footsteps on the floor up above.

The smell of burnt meat came to her nose. It smelled like steak that had been left on the grill for too long.

They must have grilled steaks last night.

“Lots of little children stopped by my apartment.” Feeling braver as she rattled on, Rafaela set the box of cleaning supplies on the kitchen table and gathered together her duster and furniture polish.

Best to start in the living room. The antiques, wood, and silver takes the longest.

Admiring the decades-old priceless china encased in the china closet, she went through the dining room. With her cleaning lady’s eye, she gauged what needed to be addressed on this visit that she may have missed before. She stopped when the blotch of red on the doorframe through the kitchen caught her eye.

What’s that? Catsup?

It wasn’t until she spotted a spot on the floor that she first considered that it wasn’t a condiment, but something much more sinister. She spotted another. Bigger this time … and another.

There was a red pool in front of the kitchen door that opened out onto the back patio and deck that projected out over the rocks to provide a massive view of the valley down below. All of the drops and splatters and pools led to the common source—the fire pit outside.

She saw the flames and smoke wafting in the wind whipping around her where she stood in the open doorway. She stared at the blackened objects in the pit. What at first appeared to be a burnt log projecting out of the flames took shape.

The hand and fingers reached out to her.

The index finger was pointing at her.

Through the rapid beating of her heart, Rafaela could hear the footsteps behind her coming closer.

“Get out!”

His image was reflected in the glass pane of the door. The wild hair. The crazed eyes.

It’s the Wolf Man!

I am not a huge movie goer but do love movies and while I missed this one in the theaters a few months back, I am excited to be able to offer a copy of this movie to a lucky fan of StoreyBook Reviews. There have been a lot of movies recently about WWII, but I think this movie goes to something that isn’t really talked about – the segregation of blacks and white servicemen even in the face of battle.  I think this sends a powerful message of what many endured during the war even though they were fighting for our freedom.

Plot Summary

Germany, May 1945, the twilight of WWII. On a final mission deep in the Harz mountains a U.S. tank crew discovers a platoon of Germans, including three infamous Panzer tanks, preparing to ambush allied supply trucks.

Before the war, Sergeant Jesse Owens, was a product of segregation and racial discrimination. Forced by law to ride in the back of the bus and disenfranchised from the political process. As the Germans bear down on the Americans, Owens fights the Axis powers for a freedom he and his fellow African American soldiers have never felt.

With a deadly game of cat and mouse quickly unfolding, Owens and his predominantly white tank crew find themselves out-gunned and out-manned by the German Panzer tanks. Several in Owens’ crew are reluctant to put their faith in a black tank driver despite their dire circumstances. With tension and fear beginning to manifest Owens knows they must put aside their differences to stop the enemy from their deadly plan. Knowing that a victory over the Nazis means a victory for racial justice, Owens and his men find a way to work together to save hundreds of lives in a desperate battle against the greatest odds they have ever faced.

Excerpts

A photo depiction of a scene from Robert, a novel from the Fallen Angel series by Tracie Podger

I watched her undo the belt at her side and shrug her shoulders, the dress falling to the floor. She slowly turned. She wore black lace panties and a matching bra. I strode towards her, taking her face in one hand, turning it to the side, giving me access to her neck.

I heard her breath quicken. I felt her hands on my chest, loosening my tie. I pulled her bra down, releasing a breast and sucked on her nipple while she fumbled with the zipper on my pants.

“You are one mean bastard,” she said.

“So I’ve been told, many times,” I whispered as my teeth bit down hard on her earlobe.

************************************************************************************

Travis left and I headed for the shower. I closed my eyes and let the water run over my face, tilting it towards the shower head. I tried to conjure up some feeling towards what we had done, but nothing came. Was I so heartless that I couldn’t feel even the slightest remorse? Even killing a man for justifiable reasons deserved some feeling. There was no doubt Padriac was a threat to me and my family and that threat had to be dealt with. He couldn’t be allowed to blackmail or talk, but what was more important, he had beaten and abused my brother. I wouldn’t allow anyone to hurt my family and live after.
