Escape Through the Wilderness 2

Title: Escape Through the Wilderness
Author: Gary Rodriguez
Publisher: Tate Publishing
Pages: 254
Genre: Teens/Children
Format: Paperback/Kindle

Synopsis

Sixteen-year-old Savannah Evans walks with a slight limp thanks to a gymnastics’ accident that dashed her Olympic dreams, but didn’t stop her from attending an adventure camp in Idaho. At Camp Arrowhead, she quickly befriends Jade Chang and Rico Cruz, but Conner Swift taunts Savi because of her injury.

When the four are teamed together for an overnight white-water river rafting adventure, Savi refuses to get in the same raft with Conner. Unfortunately, the director will not reassign her.

A fun expedition down the river turns into a nightmare when their raft slams into a huge rock and their adult guide disappears down the river.

Without their guide and desperately trying to steer an out-of-control raft, they pass the “last chance” marker and enter the larger rapids. With Jade pinned between the raft and a rock, and Rico clinging to a lifeline, Savi must cut the raft free.

When the four drag themselves out of the river, they’re bruised, beaten, lost, and twenty-five miles from camp. Because of late-night campfire tales of Vexel, a vicious animal that roams the nearby woods, Savi and the others are terrified.

Savi becomes the unlikely leader who tries to guide the group back to Camp Arrowhead. Limited supplies, injuries, and the constant threat of Vexel—who Savi fears is stalking them, complicate the harrowing return trip.

Readers will enjoy dramatic survival scenes and the group working together, solving problems, and learning to overcome adversity.

Excerpt

Suddenly, they heard a loud rustling of bushes and branches snapping downriver not far from where they had set up their makeshift camp.

“What was that?” Savi whispered anxiously. “It couldn’t be Vexel, could it?”

“Quiet.” Rico rebuked her with a hush. He raised the tip of his nearly finished spear.

Again, they heard more noise in the woods. This time they knew it was getting closer.

Review

I wasn’t sure what to expect with this book but it sure wasn’t to be kept on the edge of my seat wondering if the 4 kids lost were going to make it back to camp!

I don’t know if you remember going to summer camp as a kid, but some camps liked to tell ghost stories around a campfire.  Camp Arrowhead is no different, except they tell a story of Vexel, a creature that no one has seen or been able to kill.  Now take a bunch of teens on a rafting trip, have the adult guide get knocked out and fall out of the raft and 4 kids are left on their own going down the wrong fork of the river.

On top of them being on their own, there are personality clashes that started earlier at camp.  2 boys that are trying to be tough, and 2 girls that have their own issues.  However, despite everything these 4 manage to get through those differences to work together to try and make it out alive.

I enjoyed all of the characters and I think that this event changed all of them forever for the better.  Each character has strengths and weaknesses but they all balanced each other out as a group.  There is a little bit of religion thrown in with Savi’s beliefs, but that just rounds out the story to show what faith can do for us.

There is a small twist in the story (I don’t want to give away too much) but it made me wonder why this character didn’t do more than he did to help the teens.  It is hard to be elusive and not give away to much of the story!

The story ends and it looks like this will be a series, so I am interested to see what might be a follow up book to this one.  We give this 5 paws up

love on the slopes

Synopsis

“I’ve loved you for a lifetime without even knowing it, and I’ll spend the rest of my life making certain you never forget that. I love you, Jessa. I always have, and I always will.”

Jessa Hartley is haunted by memories of the night she threw herself at her childhood crush, Dominic DeRenzi – and he turned her away. Years later, Jessa has managed to put the past behind her and climb up the ranks as head instructor of the ski lodge she one day hopes to purchase. Only her plans take a nosedive when the smooth talking Italian shows back up in town. Even worse, he’s planning on purchasing HER lodge.

After surviving a disastrous marriage, Dominic DeRenzi returns to Jackson Hole, Wyoming, hoping to make a fresh start for him and his six year old son by purchasing the old ski lodge. Until a chance encounter with Jessa Hartley throws his well laid plans off track. The once innocent girl from his childhood has grown into the beautiful woman he always knew she would become, and he is painfully reminded of the night he over stepped his bounds and kissed her. Then broke her heart by sending her away.

Rekindling the flames of their past isn’t part of the plan, yet Dominic and Jessa soon find they’re helpless to stop the fire that burns brightly between them. He broke her heart the first time he left, but can he make her see this time around he’s here to stay?

Review

Every now and then I like to pick up a book that is what I like to call “fluff”. a feel good book that might have a little drama/tension but not much. This book fit the bill and I read it pretty quickly.

The story between Jessa and Dominic started when they were much younger and hanging out as kids. But as they got older, graduated from high school, they went their separate paths and lead separate lives. Then Dominic decides he has had enough and wants to move back to the small town where he grew up, not knowing that some of his decisions would impact his life the way they do.

Jessa has a crazy family (and I know this is the start of a series and other books will feature her siblings) but a loving one. It is probably what makes life as stable as it is with the support of her family.

Sometimes the relationship between J & D didn’t seem real, but you have to keep in mind that they knew each other as kids and so the normal “getting to know you” phase isn’t really here in the book because they already know each other, but not how they have evolved over the last 10 years. Plus there is Dominic’s child and of course a little excitement with the ex-wife which adds some good tension at that point.

We give it 4 paws up and look forward to the books about Jessa’s hunky brothers!

I’m Felicity Stone, a twenty-five-year-old with my whole life ahead of me. Well, until recently.

I didn’t do it. Why would they think I did? Why would I want my twin brother dead? Why is everyone looking at me like I’m a criminal?

Well, everyone except him… Hayes Peyton, the charmingly beautiful stranger I met in the park at midnight—a totally legitimate place to meet the man of my dreams. Plus, he knows I’m innocent.

Believing him is easy. So very easy. Maybe too easy?

Excerpts

“Hi,” I said as I stood in the doorway, Jo’s body visibly tensed as she stopped what she was doing but didn’t turn to face me.

“Can we talk?”

“I’m doing something,” she replied quietly. As she began fiddling once again with a blanket, her body stiffened further.

“Jo, please turn around and look at me.” Jo continued to make the cribs up and remained silent until she had placed all of the bedding neatly into the cribs.

“What do you want to talk about, Blake? The fact that you missed our appointment? Or the fact that I don’t even know who you are anymore?”

“Both,” I replied honestly.

Jo turned slowly to face me, I could see that she had been crying at some point, her eyes were now dry but the signs were visible. I took a few steps towards her, she had needed me and I hadn’t been here for her.

“Don’t.” She said firmly, “I don’t even know who you are anymore Blake, so I don’t want you coming over here and holding me like you care when you clearly don’t.” She snapped.

“Jo, it isn’t like that.” I said gently.

“What has happened to us Blake? How did we end up like this when only a couple of weeks ago we were so happy and so close? I can’t stand the fact that we have become so distant at a time when we should be so close to each other. You have shut me out of your life, Blake. We can’t continue this way, I can’t continue this way, and as much as I love you Blake, I can’t help think that we would be better off spending some time apart.” Jo’s voice hitched as she finished her sentence.

sad woman in depression and despair crying on black dark background

“I am trying to protect you Jo,” I said, trying to remain calm.

“Protect me from what, Blake? Please tell me, because I have absolutely no idea what or who it is that I need protecting from!”

“Me!” I yelled, finally ready to let my emotions take over. “That is what I am trying to protect you from Jo; I am trying to protect you from me because I am losing control! Damn it Jo, I have already lost control! The two people who I love more than anything are both suffering and it is out of my control, and it is killing me that I have no way of controlling the outcome. I am the fixer Jo; I am the person who always knows what to do to make things better, but now? Now I don’t have a clue what I am going to do to help anyone, I want to help both of you, I want to take away any problems, any risks and any danger that both you and my mother face but the fact that I can’t? I hate myself so much because I have let you both down! The whole thing has been building over time, and I now realize that everything bad that has happened has all been my fault and the way that I am going to be punished is by having you and my mother taken away from me. Don’t you see that?”
