Synopsis

What if Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland had taken place in New York City? Alice in Manhattan juxtaposes over 60 stunning, black and white photographs with selected prose from Lewis Carroll’s timeless classic and offers a unique exploration for New Yorkers, Lewis Carroll enthusiasts, and anyone looking for a new glimpse at Wonderland.

The photographs transport readers beyond the familiar tourist destinations and into the remote recesses of a complex city. While some photos capture direct Alice references, such as the Alice in Wonderland sculptures in Central Park or the Queen of Hearts mosaic in the 50th Street and Broadway subway station, other photographs take a metaphorical approach.  For example, when the Lory states “I am older and must know better,” we see a father teaching his son how to fish on the bank of Central Park North. When the Queen’s soldiers double up and bend into the arches for the croquet game, we see a Union Square street performer who is bent over backward with his hands on the ground and his feet still midair.

The book’s appendix contains a full listing of each photograph’s location.

Review

If you like the story Alice in Wonderland and creative photography, this will probably be a book you will like!  The photos are amazing and capture Lewis Carroll’s story quite well…and all in New York.  I’m glad that the author shared some of the photos with me so that I could share them with you because I think one look at these photos and you will see it is a book you need to purchase and share with friends and family.

We are giving this book 5 paws up…and it doesn’t hurt that there is a dog in there for April & Gracie!

The son of a Lewis Carroll scholar and collector as well as amateur travel photographer, Dan Hirshon grew up surrounded by bookshelves of Alice in Wonderland adaptations and artwork and walls of photographs taken around the world. If you are looking for a book that will make you LOL, then look no further than this book!

I don’t even know if I can express how much I enjoyed this book. The book had me laughing in quite a few places especially when Molly was writing her blog posts about her date disasters. There were many witty one liners (which I wish I had marked) and I sped through this book gobbling up every word and situation with Molly and her family and friends.

I think I felt like I could relate to Molly in some ways – the dating disasters, starting a blog and having to learn everything, aging parents. I think most people could find something that resonates with them in Molly’s story.

We give this book 5 paws up!

About the Author

I grew up reading everything I could get my hands on from my mom’s Harlequin romances to Nancy Drew to Little Woman. When I wasn’t flipping pages in a library book, I was penning horrendous poems, writing songs no one should ever sing, or drafting stories which have thankfully been destroyed. College and a stint in the U.S. Army came along, robbing me of free time to write and read, although I did manage every once in a while to sneak a book into my rucksack between rolled up socks, MRIs, t-shirts, and cold weather gear. A few years into my legal career, I was exhausted, fed up, and just plain done. I quit my job and sat down to write a manuscript, which I promptly hid in the attic after returning to the law. Another job change, this time from lawyer to B&B owner and I was again fed up and ready to scream I quit, which is incredibly difficult when you own the business. Thus, I shut the B&B during the week and in the off-season and started writing. Several books later I find myself in Istanbul writing full-time.

Review

This movie is a reminder as to why we should Forgive those that have wronged us because we aren’t always blameless in life.

The movie starts out and we see Chris being taken to the hospital and we know there has been a car accident, but you don’t actually see what happened until much later in the movie.  There is a lot of back and forth between present and the past, mostly with Chris remembering bits and pieces of the night that took most of his family, but also of happier times with his wife and children.  Now not all of his children died in the car, his oldest son Michael wasn’t in the car (my guess is he is around 16-18 since he can drive) and one of his sons, Sam, survived the car accident, but not without some serious injuries.

The movie comes across as dark and/or depressing, but that is to be expected due to the subject matter.  However, have tissues ready for about 3/4 of the way through.  We learn some things about Chris and why he is struggling with what was done to his family by Curtis – the 17 year old drunk kid that hit them.  Sometimes a life can be turned around by faith and forgiveness and this might be one of those stories…but you’ll have to watch it to find out the ending.

We give this 4 1/2 paws and it will make me think about how to handle a situation the next time I feel that I am wronged.

Standing ovations never got old. Not for me, at least. As Maestro Hans Clausen flicked his baton to signal the end of Sergei Rachmaninoff’s Symphony No. 1 in D Minor, the audience rose amid a thundering of applause. A thrill of happiness ran up from my toes, right out to the tips of my fingers. We’d pulled off a successful opening of another season for the Point Grey Philharmonic.

My fellow musicians and I stood as one to acknowledge the audience. I soaked in the appreciative applause that filled the theater, enjoying every roaring second. In time the noise died down and the audience members jammed up into bunches as they tried to file out of their rows and head for the lobby.

With the first concert of the new season truly over, I scooped up my folder of music and wended my way through chairs, music stands, and other musicians until I reached the wings of the stage. From there I made slow progress as I headed down a carpeted hallway with at least twenty other members of the orchestra, many of whom were walking slowly to chat with one another and created a human traffic jam.

Eventually I reached the musicians’ lounge where we stored our instrument cases and other belongings during concerts and rehearsals. I tucked my violin and bow safely away in their case and placed it in my locker. I would take my instrument home with me later, but the night wasn’t yet over.

“Ready to head to the reception?” Mikayla Deinhardt, my friend and stand partner, leaned against the neighboring locker.

I unfastened the clip at the back of my head and let my dark hair fall over my shoulders. “Almost.” I tossed the clip onto the shelf in my locker and shut the door.

As I ran my fingers through my hair to make sure it was free of tangles, first violinist Janine Ko removed a hot pink handbag from her locker. Aggie, a viola player, and Melissa, a flautist, immediately zeroed in on her.

“Oh my gosh! That’s gorgeous!” Aggie gushed.

“Is it a Michael Kors bag?” Melissa asked.

Janine beamed at them. “Yes.”

The women continued to chatter excitedly about the handbag as I secured my locker door with a combination lock.

“Now I’m ready,” I said to Mikayla. But as I turned around, a cascade of blond hair swatted me in the face.

Wincing, I stepped back and hit the bank of lockers. Mikayla grabbed my arm to steady me as I wavered off balance. I blinked and saw Elena Vasilyeva, the Point Grey Philharmonic’s concertmaster, fixing her long and ridiculously gorgeous blond hair right in front of me.

I glared at the back of her head, my distaste for her stemming from far more than getting swatted in the face by her golden locks. Finished with her hair, she now stood with her hands on her hips, talking to two of her fellow first violinists.

“It’s probably a knockoff,” she said, her accented words disdainful. “There’s no way she could afford a real one.”

I realized that she was referring to Janine and her handbag. Unfortunately, Janine realized that too. Her smile faltered and she returned the handbag to her locker, turning her back on the rest of the room.

Anger bubbled up inside of me as Elena swept past Janine and out of the musicians’ lounge, walking—as always—as if she were strutting along a catwalk in a fashion show.

I growled under my breath, my eyes following Elena until she disappeared from view.

Why did she always have to be so snooty? Even if I hadn’t discovered that she was involved with the man I’d fallen for a few months earlier, I still wouldn’t have liked her. She always acted as if she were superior to everyone else. And poor Janine. Elena’s words must have hurt all the more because Janine idolized her. She always hung on the concertmaster’s every word and tried to emulate her hairstyles and fashion choices. Sometimes I wanted to shake Janine. She’d be far better off just being herself.

“Forget about Elena,” Mikayla said, noting my reaction and giving my arm a tug. “Let’s go to the reception.”

Could there possibly be anything nicer in the world than a Curly Wurly?

Alone in the office, Suzy lovingly peeled off the wrapper and admired the dappled chocolate covering. Then she bit into it, her teeth sinking through the toffee, her head twisting from side to side in order to bite off that first heavenly mouthful…oh, and they were sooo much better straight from the fridge…

“Ahem.”

Suzy’s eyes snapped open and she spun around guiltily. Damn, she’d been so carried away she hadn’t even heard the door open and close behind her.

And, double damn, it had to be Leo Fitzallan.

“Mmff…shorry…mmergh…”

“Bitten off more than you can chew?” inquired Leo with a slight smile.

Suzy’s mouth was full—OK, overfull—and the toffee was welding itself to her teeth like quick-setting cement. Waving her hand apologetically, praying the melted chocolate wasn’t about to spill out and dribble attractively down her chin, she chewed and swallowed, chewed and swallowed, threw the rest of the Curly Wurly onto her desk and chewed and swallowed again.

Oh dear, not at all like the girl in the Cadbury’s Flake ad. In fact, more like Waynetta Slob guzzling a pizza.

“Sorry,” said Leo. “I obviously interrupted a special private moment.”

“There.” Suzy executed a quick curtsy. “All gone. Now, how can I help you?”

He was wearing Givenchy aftershave—none of your Tommy Hilfigers or Calvin Kleins for Leo Fitzallan, thank you very much—and an expensively cut dark suit. Suzy wondered if he had chosen the bottle-green shirt and blue and amber tie himself, or whether Gabriella had picked them out for him.

Probably Gabriella. A man who drove a gray Volvo would never be that adventurous. And the dark blue in the tie exactly matched his eyes.

“I thought maybe we should call a truce,” said Leo. “How does that sound to you?”

Blimey, Suzy thought, like a miracle. Quick, give the man a bottle of water and see if he can turn it into Chardonnay.

Aloud she said, “So what’s brought this on?”

“My brother’s happy with you. By Christmas you and I’ll be related. The last thing I want is a family feud. Easier all around if we bury the hatchet now,” Leo said easily. “Put the bickering behind us. What d’you say?”

He was even more attractive, Suzy realized, when he was in a good mood. During the last few days all he’d seemed to do was scowl, sneer, and generally radiate disapproval, which was sexy enough in its own way, of course, but it really was amazing the difference a few laughter lines could make.

“I agree.” Her mouth curled up at the corners. “That’s it then. From now on we’re going to be completely lovely to each other. And I’ll just have to find someone else to bicker with.”

“So long as it isn’t Harry,” said Leo.

“Harry isn’t the bickering kind.” Suzy smiled sunnily at him and perched on the edge of her desk. “This feels quite weird, actually. I’m not sure what we’re supposed to do now. If this were Friends we’d be giving each other a group hug.”

For a split second something indefinable flickered in Leo’s eyes. The next moment it had gone. He pushed his fingers through his ultra-straight dark hair, heaved a sigh and shrugged as if searching for inspiration.
