To combat the winter slump, resilient director Kelsey Cambridge organizes a Maple Sugar Festival, complete with school visits, pancake breakfasts, and tree tapping classes. Kelsey hires curmudgeonly maple sugar expert Dr. Conrad Beeson to teach the classes, despite misgivings over his unpleasant demeanor. It’s a decision she ends up regretting when, before the first tree can be tapped for sap, Dr. Beeson turns up dead.

Review

This is the second in a series about a farm that is used for historical reenactments and educating the town and tourists about the history of that part of Ohio.  This go around, it is tied to making maple syrup (interesting info if you didn’t know how it was made like me!) and the explanation is very educational.  I will never take maple syrup for granted again!

I have enjoyed this series so far, from the historical aspect, to the education side, and even how I am always surprised at who the killer turns out to be, it is never anyone I have suspected..at least not yet.  There is even a little budding romance between Kelsey and Chase; however, there is an added twist with her ex Eddie and his fiancee, Krissie and their upcoming nuptials.  We also learn a bit more about the custody agreement dispute between the two and how it really came into being.  And let’s just say there are some surprises at the end that have me very curious about how the situation will be resolved in the next book.

This is a series worth picking up and reading and we give it 5 paws up!

Review

This is a great story to teach children that it is ok to be afraid to try new things but if they will summon up the courage then they will find that new experiences are not so scary. I love the main character, Fuchsia Fierce, she is what I imagine many children feel like when faced with something out of their comfort zone.

This book is for kids ages 4-8, but the message is for a child of any age!

We give this book 5 paws up.

Review

Carrie is back in this second installment in the Barkery & Biscuits series.

I have enjoyed all of Linda’s books so far and this one was no exception.  The mystery wasn’t as quite in the forefront as other books but there were some twists that I was not expecting at the end.  Of course, Carrie puts herself in harms way (as most protagonists seem to do in cozies!) but at least she called for help.

The story was enjoyable but it seemed like something was missing…maybe it was just too “calm” and while I love my dogs as much as the next person, it seemed like Carrie’s love for her dog was over the top.  Maybe it really isn’t, but that is how it came across to me.  While there was some action, it didn’t seem like much.

As I mentioned before there are some twists at the end when the killer was revealed, I definitely did not see that one coming at all!

We give this 3 1/2 paws up.

East Jesus Cover

synopsis

In the summer of 1969, a small town in west Texas prepares to send one of their finest young men off to fight a faraway, controversial war. A parallel battle of domestic violence erupts at home as a younger generation struggles to reconcile older notions of right and wrong and even fractured family ties with the inevitable price that the fighting demands.

Much like today’s wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the Vietnam war is little understood by those left behind, but the lessons of strength, commitment and duty are timeless, then and now. East Jesus, the story of that national struggle today as well as back in 1969, is a plangent, soulful journey lived through the eyes of a wide-ranging, colorful array of characters, with a conclusion readers will never forget.

There’s more.  “East Jesus,” said one editor, “is a message of hope for our children.” Too often, teenagers who’ve survived a young lifetime of domestic violence believe “this is the hell I was born into, this is the hell I must accept for life.” East Jesus turns that notion on its ear: though there’s a price to pay, there’s a better way that rises above the violence.

The novel is peopled by strong characters, particularly women, in a salt-of-the-earth, small town, west Texas community. The price of a far away, unpopular war always comes due in small town America, then (set in 1969) as well as now (Iraq and Afghanistan). But the lesson of hope, sacrifice and redemption is timeless.

To read East Jesus is to live that story, to transcend the fighting at home and abroad, and to embrace the hope and faith in what’s right above all else.

Experience East Jesus, live the story–you’ll never forget it.

Excerpt

Excerpt from Chapter 2 of East Jesus

Pop had his back turned, pouring a jelly glass full of tequila. He held it up to the window, turning it back and forth with his fingers, looking through it to the street lamp cutting the darkness outside Mason’s.

He growled deep in his throat. “Get ready, Baby-Doll. Put on your pretty face. The Kang’s coming after you.”

Slowly, he put the glass to his lips. I breathed through my mouth, carefully, praying to God that Pop couldn’t hear the thudding of my heart that sent the blood roaring through my ears.

With noisy gulping swallows, Pop drained the glass, gasped and spat in the sink, then wiped his mouth with the back of the slap hand. The fingers on the club hand trembled ever so slightly, then groped for the bottle again, as Pop stared out the window.

He flinched, his shoulders hunched slightly, and the hand froze. I knew the black eyes had locked onto something, either outside or reflected from inside, in the filthy glass pane.

The hand moved toward the bottle again, steadily, and found it. Thick, grease-stained fingers closed around the bottle, lifted it, and poured the last few ounces of clear liquid into the drinking glass. He froze, eyes still locked on the window, bottle tipped toward the glass, thick shoulders tensed, a motionless freeze-frame save the tiny, colorless drops that plinked one by one into the amber pool in the glass.

My heart thundered. I fought a shiver that drew every nerve in my body tight.

The dark statue before the window gripped the bottle, frozen save the measured drip that slowed, and slowed, and finally came to one golden drop that stretched, but hung on just the same.

Faint strains of my mother’s ragged humming mixed with my own shallow breathing as I watched the cords on the back of the chop hand bulge and the finger pads whiten against the empty bottle.

I blinked. In that fraction of a second, the tiger leapt and spun, and I heard the air whistle over the mouth of the empty bottle just before the starburst of light and the dagger of pain exploded from my left cheekbone.

I flexed my knees and braced myself forward to resist the charge as Pop leapt over a laundry basket and grabbed my throat. He slammed me against the wall by the stove.

“Boy, you ain’t got the common sense to git while you could of.” His eyes bulged, and he panted short breaths sweetened with the afterscent of tequila and lingering traces of Red Man. “You jest got no sense at all.”

A thumb dug under my jawbone probing, then found its mark. My cheek throbbed, my ears hummed, and the room began to swim. A reedy voice fluttered up from somewhere deep in my heaving chest. “You… ain’t no father… to Bean. And you… ain’t no husband to—”

My feet left the floor, and I sailed across the room, weightless, catching a glimpse of my pale momma, jaw slack and eyes wide, frozen in the hallway. I dropped against the front door frame. Pop vaulted over the cluttered table and landed on his haunches square in front of me, his face in mine.

“You’re goddam right I ain’t,” he hissed, dotting my throbbing cheek with tiny flecks of tequila spit.

The slap hand whipped out of nowhere. Impact sparked another burst of light that made my ear ring and my nose burn somewhere down deep. A warm trickle flowed down my chin, but I ignored it, boring a hole in his eyes with my own.

His lips pulled back against brown teeth. “Who do you think I am a Pa to?”

Starbursts again, on the other side. My skin burned, and that ear rang. Still, I lanced him with my eyes but clenched my jaws tight.

Course hands lifted me and pinned me roughly against the door. Again, I said nothing.

Pop drew ragged breaths. “You best listen to me, boy.” He banged my head off the door. “Pa or no, I’d sooner burn in hell than rot here in East Jesus with the likes of you.”

Dog Collar Couture – Excerpt 5 – May 14, 2016

(Follow the tour to read a different part of the excerpt each day, as they are all part of Chapter One and in chronological order. You can find the list of blogs participating here)

With the walk complete, Lucie gave Fin a good-bye smooch, hopped on her scooter and zipped off. Her day had run half an hour over schedule, and she needed to get home and get cleaned up for dinner.

It had been an interesting couple of months in the Rizzo household, what with Dad home from prison.

Early release for good behavior.

He’d done two years on a tax-evasion conviction, and in that time Lucie had been downsized out of her investment banking job and moved home with Joey and Mom.

Joey drove her insane with his big mouth and constant teasing, but he’d taken care of their mother while Dad was gone. Now, at 29 years old, he’d finally moved out. Which left Lucie and her mom in the minefield known as living with Joe Rizzo, Mob Boss.

But they were adjusting. All of them. Dad might have been having the hardest time. While he’d been gone, his wife had learned a little thing called independence. She’d also learned to tell him to “make his own damned dinner” once in a while.

By five fifteen Lucie walked in the front door of Chateau Rizzo. “Helloooo?” she called in her usual greeting. “I’m home.”

She stopped just inside the door and enjoyed the sensory overload of cooking meat and rich spices. Her mother made the best roast beef ever. And that was no exaggeration. Whatever the secret spice was, it gave the meat just enough of a kick. Lucie often threatened to sign her up for one of those cooking-show battles. Mom versus a famous chef. Mom and the roast would win. No doubt.

“Lucie!” Dad hollered.

Failure Is Fatal (Laura Murphy Mysteries)

Creekside Publishing (January 21, 2016)
Paperback: 324 pages
ISBN-13: 978-0997234909
E-Book ASIN: B01AYNXO64

Synopsis

Someone at Professor Laura Murphy’s college appears to be playing a joke on her by planting sexually explicit stories in her research results, but the joke turns deadly when one story details the recent stabbing murder of a coed. Laura’s close friend, Detective Derrick Pasquis from the local police, asks for her help in interviewing the prickly suspects who resist intervention from outside the campus community. Eager to search out clues, Laura ignores warning signs that playing amateur sleuth may jeopardize her newly developing romance with Guy. And of course her usual intrusive manner puts her at odds with everyone on campus—colleagues, the college administration, the head of campus security and fraternity members. Is there no one Laura can’t offend in her eagerness to find the truth? The closer she gets to solving the crime, the more it appears that the past—the coed’s, that of a prominent faculty member and Laura’s own—is the key to the murder. Caught in an early winter blizzard, Laura must choose between wandering the mountains and freezing to death or taking her chances with a killer clever enough to make murder look like the work of an innocent student.

Technology: the Good, the Bad and the Just Plain Annoying

Technology certainly has made my life as a writer easier, simpler, almost cheaper. Well, mostly. It’s a love/hate relationship. No longer do I have to lug an entire manuscript off to the post office and mail it to my publisher. I simply hit “send” and off it goes via email. Rewrites are simple; cut, copy, paste, or delete the whole paragraph. Of course, the downside is that an agent can reject your manuscript in as little time as it took you to hit “send.”

Cellphones are dandy devices for the writer also. My husband uses his to compose work in progress. I don’t because my phone is cranky when it comes to my using its tiny keyboard. When I get close to the surface with my finger, it randomly selects a letter to appear on the screen. I seem to be highly electrostatically charged because no one else had this difficulty with my phone. Or maybe it’s that the phone hates me. I do not write or text on it. I can barely read my emails, and I don’t use it much to make calls. Anyway, I’ve learned that making calls is passé. One sends texts now. One is not me. If a call comes in and I miss it and the person leaves a message, I have no idea how to get to that message although hubby has told me how many times. I am cellphone challenged, and I don’t really care. I carry the world’s tiniest purse and there is no room for a cellphone. I never carry it with me. If I had to make an emergency phone call, I couldn’t. I’m coming to the point of view that my cellphone is a useless bit of technology for me.

The other day when I was in the gym exercising, the guy on a weight machine next to me was on his cellphone to a friend, or colleague, heck, it could have been a total stranger.  He was talking about how many expensive cars he owned. I tried moving to a corner away from him, but the gym is small and no one else was in there. The conversation continued, and, having been trained as a psychologist, I decided to amuse myself by analyzing why he was doing what he was doing. On the side of being understanding and kind, I determined he was insecure and needed to brag both to his phone contact and to me, a stranger. Poor fella. But most likely, he was simply an annoying windbag. Why do cell phone users think they have the right to invade everyone’s space. Do they really believe their lives are so interesting that I want to know about them? I’m keeping a list of people who annoy me in this way and hope I have enough time left in my writing life to make them the victims of some crime in one of my books. I think I’m getting as cranky about cellphones as mine is about me.

But I like cordless other stuff like vacuums and hand held vacs. The devices seem to go together with great ease (or maybe this is my forte—I can assemble devices easily). The only problem I find with these and other objects packaged in that heavy plastic housing is that the plastic can’t be removed unless you have a pair of garden shears or an ax. The manufacturers want you to buy the item, but they lose interested once they have your money in whether you can get it out of the package to use it .

Unfortunately, ninja defiant packaging extend to some items containing food. Here you are taking a break from work on your manuscript and you’re thinking cheese sandwich. You have a new package of Swiss in the fridge. The cheese people have kindly updated their packaging and included a new zip lock closure. All you have to do is “tear here.”, but you can’t. You try to use your teeth. It resists tearing. You find the pair of garden clippers you’ve recently employed to get into the package your new curling iron came in and you apply the clippers to the cheese package. It works. You extract the cheese and zip it back up so it “retains it freshness” just like the package says. It won’t zip, no matter how you attempt to close it. You grab the garden shears once more, cut off the top of the package and insert it into a zip lock bag. It won’t zip. You take the cheese from the bag and decide to wrap it in cling wrap. It won’t cling. You insert the entire 10 slices of cheese into your sandwich and take the mustard out. It’s a new container, so you must open the top and removed the little cardboard round thingy on the top of the bottle. Never mind. You’ll have your sandwich without. Oh, oh. You cell is ringing. You miss the call, and hope it wasn’t from a publisher offering a huge advance on your manuscript. Ah, a message left. If you could only extract it. Oh, well, you have a nice thick sandwich to eat. Something to drink with it? You think about trying to open the pop top on a can of soda and opt for a glass of water. Back to your computer and your work in progress. The screen freezes. You go to the kitchen and get the garden shears. It’s a nice day for cutting dead leaves off your peonies.

Synopsis

Welcome to Mill Pond and small-town country living, filled with fresh air, fresh food, and plenty of fresh gossip—especially when it comes to romance…

It’s impossible not to notice when someone new shows up in Mill Pond. Especially someone as obviously out-of-place as Ian McGregor. His stylish suit and fancy car scream “city slicker.” And when Tessa Lawrence discovers he can’t even change a tire, she has no choice but to help. That’s just what the locals do. And when she finds out Ian’s her new neighbor, of course she’s obliged to invite him to dinner too…

Turns out Ian’s come from New York to open a luxury resort on the property next door to Tessa’s farm, where she grows berries and sells her famous jams and delectable baked goods. But despite their quickly growing friendship and temptingly close proximity, Tessa plans to keep things with Ian strictly neighborly. For one thing, Ian’s got a fiancée who, unlike Tessa, doesn’t have dirt under her nails. Plus, Tessa knows from bitter experience that a guy this gorgeous is all too likely to break a simple country girl’s heart. Even if he’s as sweet as one of her cinnamon buns—and equally hard to resist…

Review

I wasn’t sure how I would feel about this book but I have to say I LOVED it! Yes it is a romance with the usual format (boy meets girl, some sort of issue, issue resolved and they live happily ever after) but it still grabbed me from the beginning and I finished it sooner rather than later.

Tessa has her issues with men, Ian is the hot new neighbor, but he is engaged to someone else. I really liked how Tessa ran her own farm and did a lot of baking….my mouth was watering at mention of the pies! Just wish we had recipes.

Tessa has a good friend, Darinda, who seems like a hoot and kept Tessa grounded.

Ian has his own issues with his fiancee and with starting a resort, but luckily Mill Pond is a small town and everyone watches out for one another.

This is a pretty clean romance with only one bedroom scene and even that was pretty clean.

At the end of my book was the first chapter for the next book. Looks like another enjoyable book!

We give this 5 paws up.

Trouble Magnet cover

Synopsis

Eliza Carlisle has the unwanted talent of attracting trouble, in all its forms. That couldn’t be truer than when she moves into the most bizarre apartment building on the planet. Weekly required dinners with the landlord and assigned chores are bad enough, but the rules don’t end there. Top most on the list of requirements is NO physical violence against the others residents.

There have been issues.

In the past.

The young manager, Sonya, claims that hasn’t been a problem recently, but Eliza comes home from her first day of culinary school to find a dead resident, her next door neighbor looking good for the crime, and a cop that seems more interested in harassing her than solving the case.

All Eliza wanted was to escape her past and start over, completely anonymous in a big city. That’s not going to be so easy when the killer thinks she’s made off with a valuable piece of evidence everyone is trying to get their hands on. The ultimatum that she turn it over to save her own life creates a small problem. Eliza has no idea what the killer wants, or where the mysterious object might be.

If she can’t uncover a decades old mystery in time, surviving culinary school will be the least of her problems.

Review

I love mysteries, especially cozies (which I think this book fits into that category) and this one was fun and kept me laughing at the quirkiness of the characters and just the whole setting. I loved the concept of the building and that each resident has a job to do to save on a maintenance man…but Eliza doesn’t know this when she agrees to take over her sister’s lease. I won’t reveal what her job was and her experience with doing that job, but it was quite humorous!

There is a somewhat limited cast of characters that could be the guilty party in the murder of one of the residents of this building. I was very surprised who it turned out to be and looking back there were a few clues but not many.

And what book would be complete without some love interests for Eliza…and she has more than 1!

Oh and I would be remiss in not mentioning that Eliza is attending culinary school…would love to see recipes in future books.

Overall the book was intriguing, funny and just a joy to read. I am wondering where Eliza will go next in her book.  We give this 5 paws up.

Excerpt

“No time,” turned out to be three hours. Not that anything got squared away since the police still had no idea who killed Ms. Sinclair. All the detectives who took over from Officer Williams were able to figure out was that we all lived in the most ridiculous apartment building on the planet and both Baxter and I had airtight alibis for the time of the murder, which had happened around three in the afternoon.

Knowing I had been in classes all day, seen by several dozen people, didn’t make Baxter any more inclined to be civil, and knowing he’d been in a diversity training meeting all afternoon with twenty of his coworkers certainly didn’t make me think him any less capable of murdering someone. Namely me. I’d be watching my back around him from now on.

By the time I made it home and collapsed on Bernadette’s couch, I figured it was probably time to call my sister back and explain a few things.

“I have been trying to call you for the last three hours!” Bernadette exploded as soon as she picked up. “What on earth has been going on? The last thing I heard from you was ‘He killed her,’ and then nothing!”

“Sorry.” I honestly couldn’t remember when I’d hung up on her, but I hadn’t even thought about her again until the police had cut me loose a little while ago.

“Explain,” Bernadette demanded.

Knowing this was going to take a while, I lay down on the couch and settled in. “Ms. Sinclair is dead. Murdered. Somebody stabbed her…more than once it sounds like.”

“And you know who did it?” Bernadette gasped.

“Well…I thought I did.”

Groaning, Bernadette pieced the one comment she’d heard earlier with my hesitation to continue. “You didn’t, did you? Please tell me you did not accuse Baxter of killing Ms. Sinclair.”

“Well, honestly, what else was I supposed to think?”

“Nothing! It’s not your business who killed her. Stay out of it, Eliza, for your own safety, and because you barely know any of the people you might accuse. Baxter would never hurt anyone. I can’t believe you told the police he killed her.”

“I can’t believe you’re taking his side!” I snapped. What happened to the sister who understood me and tried to help me through tough stuff like this? When did she turned into this person who tricked me into living in an apartment I was more likely to get murdered in than have a repair made without something blowing up just so she didn’t have to pay higher rent?

Bernadette sighed, and I knew she felt bad. “I’m not taking Baxter’s side, but you really shouldn’t have accused him of anything. I know he can be intimidating, but he’s really a decent guy. Most of the people in the building are. All the weird rules and requirements just tend to get everyone riled up now and again, and people like Ms. Sinclair don’t help the situation.”

Her claim of Baxter being a good guy wasn’t going to win me over any time soon, but I knew that last part was definitely true. I couldn’t believe so many people were willing to put up with this bizarre place just to have cheaper rent.

“Maybe it wasn’t Baxter who killed her.” I was willing to admit that. The rest was still up for debate. “Somebody did kill her, though, and as soon as that sinks in, I’m really going to be freaked out. What if it’s someone who lives here?”

“I doubt it’s anyone who lives in the building, Eliza,” Bernadette said in the comforting tone I was accustomed to.

I wanted to let her words sink in and work like they usually would, but it wasn’t going to happen. Not this time. “Her door was locked.”

“What do you mean?”

“I mean her door was locked when they found her.”

“How did they find her then?” she asked.

I shuddered thinking about it, glad I hadn’t come home any earlier and seen it without being prepared. “The lady who lives next to her saw blood seeping out from under the door. She called Sonya, who opened the door, and they found her there in the entryway. The police thought the murderer must have gone out the window, but…”

“Ms. Sinclair doesn’t have a fire escape because it’s too close to the neighboring building to fit one,” Bernadette finished.

“Plus, the window was still locked, too,” I said, “which means…the person who killed her had access to a key.”

Bernadette was silent for a long time. When she spoke, I could hear fear thick in her voice. “It could have been a family member’s key, or she could have lost her key. Sometimes she’d leave them stuck in her mailbox downstairs.”

“Yeah, maybe,” I said, but neither of us really bought that. “The police said her keys weren’t in her apartment anywhere.”

“I’m so sorry, Eliza. I never would have suggested you move in if I didn’t think it was safe. You shouldn’t have to deal with something like this again.”

She really did sound contrite this time. Not like earlier when we’d talked about the non-murderous brand of craziness of this place. Sure, my sister may have willingly led me into the ultimate nuthouse, but she’d never knowingly put me in danger.

“You don’t think…” I hesitated, trying to shove my fears back down into the deep recesses where they had lived for the past five years. “It couldn’t be…him. Right?”

“Of course not,” Bernadette said quickly. “He’s gone. Even the police agreed you were safe now.”

Like that meant much. I took a deep breath, working to convince myself that my sister was right. I would never have left the bakery and my safe but lonely life if it hadn’t been true. This was something else entirely.

She wrote her first novel when she was sixteen years old, but spent ten years rewriting and perfecting it before having it published.

Native to New Mexico, DelSheree and her husband spent several years in Colorado for college and work before moving back home to be near family again. Praise for Her One and Only

“Down-to-earth, in-depth characters give the story an authentic feel. Dru, being the youngest Porter, is headstrong and sympathetic, and when she matches wits with Gray, their connection is as electric as their budding romance is sweet. A delightful read.”—RT Book Reviews
