But I specialize in nonfiction,” he protested.

“Not today.  Listen, it’s easy.  The writers line-up and wait their turn.  You signal a green light when it’s time for one of them to sit in front of you.  And then you switch it to red when you are busy during a pitch session.  Repeat for each writer you see.  The buzzer is set for three minutes.  Each writer summarizes his or her story.  You offer honest feedback, well maybe not too honest.”  Michelle laughed at her feeble joke.  “Anyway, you might even want to represent one of them.”

“Hah, I doubt it.  I know jack shit about horror and science fiction.  And I am well aware of what a pitch is, thank you.  I think I can handle this.”  Michelle nodded and smiled.  Her deep set eyes disappeared behind her fleshy cheeks.  She handed him her revised schedule for the rest of Saturday and Sunday and then waddled away, leaving Claude alone with a small line already forming.

Claude slinked into his chair and practiced the off/on switch of the signal and then the on/off switch of the buzzer.  Before committing to the “green” light of welcoming a new writer to sit down, he pulled out his phone.  There were four messages from Veronica.  She probably called to bitch about him being late.  He had the event coordinator to thank for that.  He then glanced at the new schedule-classes that taught elements of steampunk, paranormal romance and historical romance.  Oh great, he thought, I know nothing about this nor do I want to.  At least the Meet-and-Greet cocktail party promised an open bar.  He reluctantly flicked on the green light and an old, thin man appeared in the chair across from him.

“Can I help you?” Claude asked.

The man wore a Star Trek t-shirt with a series of ears ending with Spock’s pointy ear on the front side.  ‘Highly Logical Evolution’ was underneath the picture.  “I’m here to pitch you my novel.”

Claude nodded and turned on the buzzer.  “Go.”

“It’s about an astronaut who runs into a tribe of aliens somewhere around Saturn.  He falls in love with one of the female aliens and then follows her back to the star that she came from.  She then introduces him to her…”

Claude drifted off into daydream land at this point.  He glanced at the buzzer.  Only one minute had passed.  It was going to be a long day.  Finally the buzzer went off.

“So what do you think?” the man asked.

“Honestly, I am not sure.  You have an active imagination and it’s brimming with potential.  Send my agency a copy once you are finished.”  Claude dug inside of his breast pocket for a stack of the agency’s business cards and then handed the man one of them.  He seemed happy and left.

Claude fine-tuned his brush-off speech for the next four writers, all white men and all over forty years old.  Their ideas were way over the top and difficult to follow.  He began losing faith in this so-called opportunity.  Writer number five blathered on about The Grays attacking the United States for the gold in Fort Knox.  He wished he had a bottle of vodka and a vile of cocaine to make the time go by faster.  Maybe some marijuana as well.  An altered state of mind might make the pitches entertaining.  The man with the Gray alien story finished his pitch.  Although Claude didn’t like the story, it was the best one he’d heard since pitch fest began.  “Yes, I think I see where you are going with this.  I think I can sell it.  Email me the manuscript direct.  Let me write down my email.  PDF please and I’ll see what I can do.”

The man smiled and practically floated away.  Claude’s afternoon improved.  Science fiction and horror began to rub off.  There were all kinds of new shows on television that discussed the possibility of aliens and vampires being real.  Science fiction and horror could replace the commission of the diet doctor.  He could hang another bestselling cover in his office.  One of these books could be the basis for a new pilot or even a movie.  For a moment, he felt the same excitement he had once felt at the onset of his career and got excited.  Maybe this was why Veronica sent him here.  He woke up from his daydream and began to take notes.

The first girl science fiction writer sat down in front of him.  She was also the first of the dozen or so writers to be under forty.  He guessed her to be somewhere in her early twenties.  She was short and small with long dark brown hair and amber brown eyes.  Her eyes were captivating.  They were shaped like almonds and outlined with thick eyelashes.  He wasn’t sure about her race, maybe mixed or Hispanic or even Native American-definitely exotic.  She was pretty in a self-conscious sort of a way.  She wore no makeup, a plain black shirt, a crystal necklace, and jeans.  There was something witchy and grungy about her, like she belonged in a novel about witchcraft.

“Okay, are you ready?” Claude asked.  She nodded and he started the timer.  Silence.  “Let’s start this again.”  She nodded but still would not speak.  This was a first.  Out of all of the windbags he listened to, she was the first to be tongue-tied.  “Let’s do this with no timer.  Don’t be nervous.”

“I’m so sorry.  I’ll try this tomorrow,” she said and then got up from her chair.  Her eyes watered and her skin reddened.

“Miss, there is no sci-fi pitch fest tomorrow.  Here, look at the schedule.”  Claude slid the itinerary her way before she walked off.  “It’s all paranormal and romance crap tomorrow.”  He got her to smile.  “C’mon, sit down.  Trust me, my opinion on this subject is meaningless.  I specialize in diet books and nonfiction.  I’m here because I was late.  Try your pitch on me, I’m harmless.”

She reddened again, embarrassed at something he must have said.  Hotel workers entered the ballroom and began collapsing the cubicles, putting round tables in their space.  He had a two hour reprieve and then it was cocktail time.

“There kicking us out,” the girl said.  “Guess it wasn’t meant to be.”

“Let me assume you are coming to the cocktail hour.”  The girl nodded.  “How about you drink up some false courage and then pitch me?”  She smiled and nodded.  Claude wouldn’t mind taking her back to his room at the end of the night, but there was something more.  She had his attention.

“I’ll be here.  I’ll be ready then,” she said.

Yes, Vegas was getting better and better.

“Ha! Do you like that?” Vincent laughed devilishly. “You never respected me! But after today, you’ll never win again!” He pushed even more lightning bolts toward Jak. “You’ll have to go home and tell them that you were beaten by your little brother. Everyone will see that you’re not so perfect after all.”

Jak’s blue striker crystallized from the intense heat of the electric bolts. “Aaaahh!” he screamed. He tried to deflect the powerful torrents.

“You are nothing!” Vincent yelled.

Jak wheezed with the last of his strength. His words strained from the bottom of his diaphragm to the tip of his tongue. “It is a shame. Your first victory will be our last moment as brothers.” His face tightened. His brows merged. Moisture soaked his forehead. His knuckles whitened around his striker. His muscles locked up. “You need to know two things.” Jak paused to catch his breath. “I love you. I always have… Aaaahh!” A chilling scream bellowed forth before he could finish.

Vincent’s anger softened once he had won. He tried to release the rail and stop the flow of electricity, but something from beyond held his hand on the track. He vigorously struggled to let go, but it seemed an invisible force kept his hand there against his will.

Jak’s power met its limits. His striker could no longer take the electrical assault. It exploded into fragments of tiny blue shards. The lightning bolts devoured him.

Everything went dark as Vincent collapsed.

A strange, uneasy silence fell.

Face down, Vincent clumsily groped his way through the pitch-black tunnel. With a remorseful tone, he called out to his brother. “Jak, I’m sorry.” He began to stutter. “I was just… I don’t know… I was being stupid and mad about dumb stuff. I’ve never felt that kind of anger before. I didn’t know what I was doing. I swear. I’m really, really sorry. ANSWER ME!”

Excerpt

Katie flagged down the waiter for another round of appletinis. She turned off her phone to eliminate any disruption in the evening’s events. She surveyed the room diligently, nodding in satisfaction. The bar was classy. Oak panels stained deep red layered the floor with matching rafters up above. It was the kind of place that lawyers and corporate business-types frequented. Tonight it was bustling with the usual crowd. Waiters played the dodging game, weaving in and out of groups perfectly without ever spilling a drop. As the waiter brought the drinks to the table, Katie shifted her weight and repositioned her legs. Whether or not she was aware of it, she moved ever-so-subtlety closer to Dylan. Katie had never cheated on Evan before, though she had come close a few times. Flirting and sending the wrong message to guys happened all the time with her. It made guys take chances that crossed the line with remarks and gestures most would consider inappropriate for a married woman. Katie desperately craved attention. The attention of any male in the room. Tonight she had Dylan’s.

Exclusive Excerpt

Five Delta Force operators sitting in a Venezuelan hotel room while awaiting their next mission assignment.

One new team member, Staff Sergeant Melissa Moore. Whose sudden arrival is proving to be surprising to many of the team.

This is especially true for the team’s tech wizard, Richie Goldman, who has managed to unravel his tongue enough to convince Melissa to sit on a couch beside him.

And now is the moment when that Delta Force #2 begins to earn its title. It’s time for: Heart Strike!

There was a sharp knock on the hotel door that shattered the tableau. Not a coded tap, but the sharp rap-tappa-tap-tap of “Shave and a Haircut.” Carla and Melissa both jerked like they’d been slapped.

Chad and Duane were already on the move back into their rooms. They’d be out of sight with weapons drawn in case force was needed. Richie swept his radio gear and computer into a sack he’d kept handy and kicked it under the couch.

He brushed his fingertips across Melissa’s shoulder, partly to get her attention and partly because he wanted to. There was a shock, like one of deep recognition. She felt…amazing, even from that light brush.

She spun to face him in surprise—whether at the touch or if she felt the same thing, he couldn’t tell.

“There are a pair of silenced Glock 23s behind the sofa cushion you’re leaning on,” he whispered. Then stretched his arm along the back of the couch. It would look as if they were a couple, but it placed his hand ready to plunge down and grab a handgun if needed.

Melissa studied him for just a second, shook her head more like a wet dog than a surprised cat, and nodded. In that instant, Richie was overwhelmed by the blueness of her eyes. There was a depth there normally reserved for dark-eyed women. Her eyes said, “I’ve seen some shit,” then they turned calm and cool as the operator clicked into place.

As Kyle rose to his feet, checking the room with a single glance before heading to answer the door, Melissa did the strangest thing.

She turned and leaned back against Richie’s chest as if they were indeed a couple.

Strategically, it was a good move. First, it provided her with a natural reason to turn and fully face the entryway that had been off her left shoulder. Second, it would look casual to anyone who entered. And third, it placed her hand close beside his, just above the hidden guns, without inhibiting his own line of fire.

And fourth, it totally overwhelmed him. If brushing his fingers along her shoulder had been a shock, having her lean back against his chest was a body blow. She was warm…hot…radiating, as if she was a part of his own bloodstream or nervous system or something. It felt as if she’d always been there, and if he were to place his arm around her waist instead of hovering it over a hidden Glock 23, they’d be just as they were meant to be.

Her head rested back against his shoulder, brushing half of his face with her hair. It was soft and smelled of shampoo and plane flights—also of icy mountaintops and warm fires on a dark night. He buried his face in her hair and breathed her in.

“Hey!” She tried to twist around to look at him and impacted his nose with her temple.

“Ow! Crap!” His eyes crossed at the sudden flash of pain.

“God damn it!” Carla was swiveling in their direction to see what was happening and had her own pistol drawn.

That, in turn, had Melissa grabbing for her hidden weapon.

Chad and Duane rolled into the room with the HK416 assault rifles raised to their shoulders and seeking a target.

Richie heard the distinct snick of the HKs’ safeties coming off.

Everyone was holding a weapon except for Richie, who was holding his nose.

Kyle stepped back in from the short front hall and stopped. A tall thin man peeked over Kyle’s shoulder. He looked familiar, but Richie’s eyes were still watering and he couldn’t see clearly.

The man surveyed the tense situation.

“I don’t think they’re glad to see me.”

The girls ran off. Zack and Diana were left looking at each other. Neither spoke.

“I think I’ll move to a safer area before I get singed by the fireworks,” Jen said.

They turned to look at her. Both had forgotten she was there. “There aren’t any fireworks, Jen,” Diana said, confused.

“Sure there are, hon. You just haven’t seen them yet.” She patted Diana’s arm and walked away.

***

Diana felt her face get hot as understanding dawned. “She didn’t mean us, did she?”

“Afraid so.” Zack’s lips twitched with barely contained amusement. “If you wanted to ask me out you didn’t have to set the girls up to do it,” he teased.

“I seem to remember you asking me to dinner,” Diana said. Did the man eat testosterone for breakfast? He looked delicious. His khaki shorts made his tan legs look lean and muscular, and with a red, button-down shirt and brown leather sandals, he looked like he was ready for a walk on the beach.

“So how did I end up at your house with you making me dinner?” He winked at her.

Touché,” Diana said.

“However, you do have the set up part right. But it wasn’t me. It was Jillian who got the girls to set us up on a date.”

“Oh.” She suddenly felt deflated. “You don’t have to go. I can take them. I’m sure you have better things to do with your Saturday night.”

“Better than taking the three prettiest girls in town to a movie? Not a chance. Cassidy and I will pick you both up at six.”

“You do realize it will be me going, not Liz?”

“Of course,” he said, confusion marring his brow.

“You said prettiest, I thought you meant Liz,” Diana said. He stopped walking and looked over at her. She found it hard to hold his gaze. She hated feeling vulnerable, being compared to Liz had always made her feel that way. Slowly he cupped her cheek. “I was talking about you. It’s always been you, never Liz. Got it?”

Had she ever seen that intense look in his eyes? She nodded. Message received all the way down to her toes. Jen had been right. There were fireworks, and she’d just gotten singed.

Top 10 Fun Facts about As Rich as a Rogue

1. As Rich as a Rogue was inspired by Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austin.  Can you say, duh? Everyone who writes and reads regency romance loves Austin’s work. But I was listening to an audio copy of Pride and Prejudice when I had the strongest desire to write a story based on an absolutely rude incident at a party.  Just like in Austin’s book, the heroine overhears the hero being awful, but then I made it more confrontational. She chastises him face to face and both of their lives are forever changed. Each spirals in a different way from that one incident. So, in short, P&P was the basis for my book!

2. This series has an animal character in every book. 50 Ways to Ruin a Rake features a turkey that gets mistaken for a dodo bird. I wanted the publisher to put pictures of little turkeys in between every scene, but they refused. L One Rogue at a Time features a pig who gets drunk and forces all sorts of mishaps in the mud. I just love bathing in the creek scenes. And then As Rich as a Rogue features a bet about a rude parakeet. Hero and Heroine are racing to see who can teach the parakeet an appropriate phrase first. So in my mind (and because I’m awful with titles) the books were the turkey book, the pig book, and the parakeet book.

3.  I am notoriously terrible at titles. In fact, my editor once called my title suggestion the worst she’d ever heard in 30 years of publishing. Guess what the original title of this book was.

A. The Duke’s Cunning Plan

B. That Nobody Chit from Hull

C. Of Birds, Brides, and Men

D. Megan and Peter’s Book

Answer: C and D – Option A, The Duke’s Cunning Plan was the original title for 50 Ways to Ruin a Rake. (Damon Suede changed that to the Duke’s Cunning Linguist which made my editor blush). That Nobody Chit from Hull was dubbed the worst title ever and became One Rogue at a Time. Birds, Brides and Men was just a cute thing I made up and used in my brain interchangeably with Megan and Peter’s book.

4. I’ve had lots of great covers in my career. After 50 books, some of them have been absolutely stunning, but As Rich as a Rogue is probably my favorite. Guess why.

A. Red and gold were my high school class colors. So of course, this would be my favorite cover!

B. Doesn’t the hero look hot? Enough said!

C. Her facial expression. She looks wickedly mischievous and I love that!

D. My name. Big, bold, and gold! Yes sir, I do have an ego!

Answer: C – The colors are awesome, but that has nothing to do with my class colors. The hero looks hot, but without man chest, it’s just nice. And I do have an ego, so it’s great to have my name so large, but that’s not why I love the cover. It’s all about her face.

5. One scene in As Rich as a Rogue was built directly from my Downton Abbey imagination. Guess which one.

A. The love scene of course. I’ve built lots of love scenes in my imagination with the handsome male cast of Downton Abbey.

B. The scene where the Cook and Housekeeper share tea with the hero and give him important information on the villainous things his father is doing. I set the scene in Mrs. Hughes’ tiny office and imagined her and Mrs. Patmore trying to tell Matthew Crawley something sensitive.

C. In my mind, the ball was set in the Downton Abbey ballroom. Where else would it be?

D. We’re able to visit a few lower class pubs in Downton Abbey and in my book. My imagination grabbed the seediest pub and put it into my book.

Answer: B – In my imagination, the hero’s Cook and Housekeeper worked in Downton Abbey’s belowstairs. So that setting was lifted directly into my book (minus certain appliances). All the other options above didn’t quite translate to the Regency time period.

6. All of the Rakes and Rogues books have a silly side to it. A part of the plot that is designed for humor and inevitably spirals out of control.  In 50 Ways to Ruin a Rake, every person in the book has a plan that goes horribly awry. A zillion competing agendas clash in hilarious ways! In One Rogue at a Time, the heroine believes something that no one else does. Her insistence becomes funnier and funnier until the world aligns with her. In As Rich as a Rogue, I played with all the things we do to maintain or fight appearances until it becomes incredibly silly. Great fun to read, but OMG it was hard to write. Finding that spot of funny without becoming too silly is a difficult target to hit. I think I managed it, but you’ll have to decide for yourself.

7. True or False: I wrote this book without benefit of coffee.

TRUE!  I hate having to search for coffee when travelling. Sometimes I have to get up incredibly early during conferences (well early for me), and adding in time to find a café for a soy latte is a real challenge. So I decided to go coffee free and see how I felt. Answer: TIRED! They say everyone has a drug of choice, and mine is caffeine. This book took a month longer than usual to write and I felt like I had to work twice as hard to be witty. All of that was magically solved the minute I went back on a morning cup of joe!

8. My very first published regency romance, Rules for a Lady, featured a young street boy adopted by the heroine. He was a delightful source of a disagreement between hero and heroine. It works because the heroine has a very soft heart and picks up strays all over the place. In As Rich as a Rogue, I turned that around. The very practical-minded hero ends up adopting a street boy and trying to justify his tender heart. Plus, this street boy is a great deal more savvy than in my first book, so there’s a few more challenges there. Great fun!

9. The first sexual encounter (more than a kiss) in As Rich as a Rogue had to be completely re-written several times. That’s extremely unusual for me. Normally love scenes are relatively easy for me. By the time the characters get sexual, I’ve built up the tension so high that the hero and heroine just implode together. But in this case, I couldn’t get the tone right. In the first go round, what started as a funny scene becomes hero dominant fast. That wasn’t right, so I lessened the funny and it just didn’t work with the lighter tone of the book. I tried fully funny and ended up with slapstick. OMG it was a mess. Finally, I just stopped and re-read the book from beginning again. I flowed deeper into the heroine’s mindset and managed a balance. My editor didn’t have one correction on the scene, so I think I finally got it right!

10. Mari, the heroine of As Rich as a Rogue, appears in an earlier ebook novella titled Winning a Bride. In fact, that’s my favorite novella of all that I’ve ever written, but it has a significant error. It features a character named Megan when that name didn’t come into use until the twentieth century. Oops! So rather than perpetuate the error, I changed her name to Mari and wrote her story with that name.

“I never imagined that I would have to fight so hard for the woman of my choice.”

“Because you are a wealthy lord?”

“Yes.”

She sighed and kicked idly at a stone. “If you wish to pursue this, you need only speak to my father. He will put me on bread and water and lock me in a dungeon until I accept your proposal.”

His eyes narrowed. “Your father would do that?”

“Probably,” she said with a laugh. Her expression was easy despite what she was suggesting.

“So your father is a harsh man,” he pressed. This was something he needed to know.

“What? Papa? Well, no more than the usual, I suppose. He’s considered merciless in business.”

“How merciless?” In his experience, a man’s business practices could be very ugly indeed. “I need particulars, Miss Powel.”

She faced him squarely. “Then you should talk to my father.”

He took a deep breath. “Very well,” he said. “I will.” It took her a moment to process those words and then another breath before she grabbed his arm in alarm. “Oh no. I misspoke. My father is the gentlest man in the world, and you should definitely not speak to him.”

Now they were getting somewhere. “Afraid of bread and water, are you?”

“Yes! Well, no, not literally. Good God, why are we speaking of my father? You are correct, he is the one who wants the title and would do a great deal to see me wed to you. But after the vows are exchanged, you would not be shackled to him. It would be me in your bed. Day in and day out with a wife who spends most of her time wanting to throttle you.”

He heard her words, but most of them were lost under the fantasy of her in his bed. Of her beneath him night after night and well into the morning, when he could wake her with sweet kisses and bold thrusts. “My lord?” she pressed when he had been silent too long.

He forcibly drew himself out of his reverie. “So what is it that you want in a man, if it isn’t a title or money?”

She glanced at him but quickly looked away. “Shall I name for you the countless well-heeled peers who would be a nightmare as a husband? There are exactly fifty-three.”

“Are those the eligible gentlemen?”

She shuddered. “Goodness, no. The unmarried or widower titles number thirty-seven. Beyond that, there are over a dozen in my acceptable column, and exactly none who wish to court me, a wayward Welsh cit.”

“Lord Rimbury is courting you.”

“Well-heeled, my lord.”

“I am courting you.”

“You are in my nightmare category.” He turned to her. “Why?”

“And here we are full circle. I have explained to you that we do not suit. We fight constantly. You make me want to do violence. Every single one of my good intentions fly to the boughs the moment you enter a room. You make me insane, my lord, and—” He did not allow her to say more. He knew her words were meant to dissuade him, but he heard what she didn’t say. He heard that she lost her careful plans when he was around. That she was mad for him. And if they were wed, she would be this creature who challenged him at every turn to speak better, to think more clearly, and to act in every way better than the lummox he had been. That he often still was.

So he kissed her.

He jerked her into his arms and put his mouth on hers. He wrapped her tight against his chest, knew the glorious feel of her breasts flush against his torso, and when her mouth opened on a gasp of surprise, he thrust his tongue inside.

Review

I managed to catch up on this series (was only 3 books behind!) over the past few weeks so that I could read this book that will be released on Tuesday. (thank you Netgalley for an early copy!)

I have loved this series from the very first book. It has hooked me with the witty dialogue, action and the books have even been a little educational! Many times I found myself chuckling out loud to various situations that Tara found herself in only to have my husband ask what was so funny. Sadly I couldn’t really tell him because it would take longer to set up the situation to explain a 1 liner and then he probably wouldn’t understand. Maybe he needs to read the books!

These books are also educational and provide some good tidbits about the IRS and how to not find yourself crosswise with them. Pay your taxes!

Tara and Nick are a dynamic couple and one of these days they might get hitched….only time will tell. They have their own quirks but fit together quite well. I really enjoy all of the characters in the book(s) and they just round out the storyline.

While you can read these books out of order (or read a later book without reading the first books) I don’t recommend it. Start with book 1 and work your way up to this one. You can thank me later!

We give this book (and series) 5 paws up!

Excerpt

When you stop and think about it, I mean, our lives don’t make sense. We couldn’t have always lived up here, right? It gets me pretty antsy thinking about it because, I mean, this is a tower, so we had to have come up the stairs at some point. Didn’t we?

I don’t know, and thinking about it gets me frustrated. When I’m in this kind of mood, I go to the rooftop and look out. You can actually see other towers rising up in the distance. Some aren’t even that far from ours. I stare at them, and I’m just like . . . is anybody over there? Is anybody looking back at me? Does anybody know or remember we’re trapped in this place?

Or are we all that’s left?

After I’ve gotten myself sufficiently depressed, I’ll stare over the edge of the roof, trying to see how far below I can look. Thing is, it’s impossible to see much. This tower just vanishes into the Darkness. Nobody, and I mean nobody, even knows why. It’s just blackness down there.

Oh, about Floor 12. Yeah, that’s where the Creep really starts. The Creep? It’s this . . . gunk. Super-disgusting stuff that you shouldn’t touch because it makes you feel weird, and the lower down the Tower you go, the more you see it. It starts to cover the walls, and it’s kinda gross. It’s really slick, like saliva, and it looks all muscle-y. Almost alive. Good thing you don’t have to worry about it when you’re higher than Floor 11. Still, I wonder what it is. We all do. I know that when you touch it, you can start hallucinating. I did once. Well, okay, I’m lying. I’ve touched it a few times when I’ve been on the lower levels, which is why my parents made the rule that I couldn’t head down there in the first place. I mean, I don’t pay attention to them, but I get why they don’t want me going that far below into the Tower. The Creep makes you see . . . things. Shadowy things. Sometimes they’re right in front of you, but most of the time, they’re in the corner of your eye. They say that by Floor 21, you don’t even have to touch the Creep to hallucinate, which is a total trip. Must suck to live down there.

Review

Dog spirit guides can take many forms and in this book it is a 5 lbs Yorkie named Prozac.  He took this assignment not knowing what the TBD could possibly entail just so he could play Sandy in a revival of Annie sometime in the future.  He definitely was not expecting Meredith – a woman that lost her fiance 3 years ago and was still grieving.

This story goes back in forth primarily from Prozac and Meredith’s point of view.  I think there might be a few chapters from Helen or someone else’s POV, but not many.  It took me a couple of chapters to understand the flow, but once I did, I enjoyed the back and forth and especially when it was Prozac’s chapter because I found him to be a bit arrogant, but considering his history that he lays out for you in an early chapter, it isn’t too surprising.  Despite the arrogance, I think he learns something from Meredith’s pain and current situation, that perhaps there is more to the human emotions than he has experienced throughout time.

Meredith is another story, she is a mess!  Yes her fiance was killed in a brutal manner, but life goes on and one can still grieve and miss a loved one and continue with life.  However, it takes her petsitting Prozac and meeting a few other people to turn that life around.

There are some witty characters, along with some that learn lessons along the way.  I think this book touches many emotions and creates many learning moments for many of the characters.

We give this 4 paws up!
