May 1940. The Germans invade France and the course of three lives is upended. Annelle LeMaire is a French refugee desperate to contact her Legionnaire brothers. Mabry Springs, American wife of a wealthy Brit, is struggling to come to terms with a troubled marriage and imminent German invasion. And Reid Carr, American representative of French champagne house Pol Roger, brings more than champagne to Prime Minister Winston Churchill. Their paths entwine when Churchill and his entourage take refuge at Wickwythe Hall, the Springs’ country estate hidden from the full moon and German bombers beneath a shroud of trees. There, as secrets and unexpected liaisons unfold, Annelle, Mabry, and Reid are forever bound by the tragedy they share.
Part Downton Abbey, part Darkest Hour, Wickwythe Hall was inspired by an actual confrontation between the British and French navies in July 1940 and is a story of love, loyalty, and heartrending choices.

I Will Wait
Guest Post by Judithe Little
My head is always swimming with songs, fragments of refrains, repeating rhythms. So it seemed natural that one of the characters in my historical novel, Wickwythe Hall, a French woman named Annelle LeMaire, would also have a song playing in her head. But what song would that be?
One of the themes of Wickwythe Hall is waiting. Annelle is waiting for word from her brothers, fighters with the French Foreign Legion in North Africa, to know that they’re safe. In France, on the beaches of Dunkirk, British soldiers wait for rescue. In England, where most of the novel takes place, Mabry Springs, an American married to a wealthy Brit, waits for the Germans to come, for the bombs to fall. And Reid Carr, a secret liaison between Downing Street and the White House, waits with Winston Churchill for help from President Roosevelt, praying the U.S will step in and join a war they want no part of.
A popular French song at the time was J’Attendrai, which means “I will wait.” This is the song that plays in Annelle’s head and that she sometimes hums to herself. It’s a beautiful song that evokes the time period, the sense of longing, the melancholy of not knowing what will happen next.
