Synopsis

Find out how I, a nobody from the state of Rhode Island, was invited to travel Europe with the son of the richest man in the world at the time. We drove 19,965 miles through 12 different European countries in 10 weeks. We dined with Kings and Queens in Denmark, we gambled with the Shah of Iran in Monte Carlo, we had high tea with her Imperial Highness of Iran Princess Farah in Paris, we were rescued out of handcuffs by Shirley Temple Black during the Russian Invasion of Czechoslovakia, and Brigitte Bardot – The sexiest women in the world at the time – “Would you please dance with me? And that does not even scratch the surface of this mind-blowing adventure of 10 lifetimes that took me an additional ten years just to process.

How did my companion turn a ship around in the middle of the ocean just because we missed its departure? Within 8 hours of sending his dad to Iran, how did 30-$100 bills get hand-delivered to our hotel room in Switzerland even though no banks or wiring offices were open? After being told by the telephone company in Nice, France, to put my call through to the USA, how did my companion from the first payphone have me talking to my dad in the USA in 30 seconds flat?

How did Israel in 1948 get the oil needed to survive when no country in the world could or would sell the oil? Is it true that his father had permission from the Israeli government to build an entire city in Israel to move the total Jewish population from Tehran, Iran, to Israel at his own expense?

I was one of only eight people in the world who knew about this history-changing plan as I saw the actual blueprint of the city, which cost more than I would earn in my lifetime. Wait till you hear of the story of the 100 suitcases or the one about the prisoner who returned voluntarily to Dachau, a German concentration camp after escaping and being free.

If “Nothing Boggles the Mind of Simple Men like The Truth, ” I promise that you will be glad that you read it because as you do, you will come to realize it must be true because nobody could make this story up.”

Excerpt

I got the call at work. I recognized Moritz’s voice immediately from his German accent. His voice was thick with grief. He could barely get the words out.

“It’s Maurice,” he said. “He’s gone.”

Gone? As in dead? I couldn’t seem to process the information. I stared blankly at the wall of my shop, specifically at a poster for Goodyear Tires. “How?” I managed to ask.

“Massive heart attack.”

A heart attack? It seemed such an unglamorous way to go, so incongruous with the enchanting no-holds-barred way Maurice had lived his life. I did the math in my head: he was only fifty-two.

I kept the call brief, thanked Moritz, one of Maurice’s other close friends from Munich, Germany, clearly in a similar state of shock, and hung up the phone.

I sat down in a chair and let the first wave of emotion wash over me. True, I hadn’t seen him in years, but I still thought of him as my best friend, and now that cherished friend was dead—the man who had opened the world up for me in ways I never imagined possible. Now, nearly 26 years after the fact, I had to remind myself that the time we spent traveling around Europe just after college was not a dream, that I did not imagine Maurice. But in truth I knew I had not. In the deepest depths of my mind, I could not have conjured up the times we had together.

Review

Wow is the first word that comes to mind. This stroll down memory lane for a trip taken by Gary and Maurice was terrific. While I would like to say it is hard to believe all of this happened and the details that Gary remembered, I don’t doubt a word that was written.

This is also a story of an unlikely friendship. Maurice is from a wealthy Iranian family, and Gary is from a small New England family. But this is what made it work. They each brought experiences to the table that the other may not have ever experienced had it not been for this friendship. Maurice’s experiences were ones that many of us might only dream of – meeting royalty, staying in nice hotels, and gambling with other people’s money. But Gary brought humble beginnings and family to the table. Despite all that Maurice’s money could buy, it can’t purchase home-cooked meals and close-knit family ties.

Their jaunt around Europe was one that most of us would not experience, or at least parts of it. I believe that most of us touring Europe would see other parts of the countries. However, this was 1968, and the times were different. I loved how you could send mail to a hotel, and they would hold it for you, whether you checked in or not. I’m unsure what sort of mail you would need to have sent this way, but it was intriguing.

This friendship and adventure across Europe was a joy to read. I imagined what taking this journey must have been like and that relieving these memories brought back some happy times.

We give this book 5 paws up.

About the Author

In 1965, Gary Orleck graduated from Babson College—a small but outstanding business college with students from around the world—in Wellesley, Massachusetts, and set out along Route 66, working his way around the US for four months. Most helpful was an agreement he had with the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company that he could work in any store during his travels, but he could not be paid locally. Instead, his pay was sent to his home later. Gary was well-versed in the tire business because his father owned the largest Goodyear Tire and Service store in New England.

For a young boy from Rhode Island, this was a life-changing experience. Gary was present for the Watts Riots and the world premiere of Fantastic Voyage with Raquel Welch and Fernando Lamas at Grauman’s Chinese Theater. He arrived in San Francisco the day topless was approved. The four-month trip wet Gary’s appetite for more traveling. While driving home from California, he made a promise to himself: to drive around all of Europe the next year.

Gary bumped into a college student who graduated with him. The student was from Iran, a country most Americans had never heard of. Gary didn’t know it at the time, but his friend was from the wealthiest family in the world. His friend had lived in Switzerland for four years of boarding school, four years of college in London, and seven summers in the South of France for summer school. He asked Gary to join him that following summer to drive through Europe—his friend offering to be his tour guide since he knew Europe like the back of his hand.

At first, Gary was hesitant because of his friend’s perceived reputation, but he was very persuasive, promising to be the best tour guide ever. Reluctantly, Gary agreed, which led to the most mind-blowing experience—a ten-week trip through 12 countries and 19,920 miles of earth-shattering adventures that included turning a ship around in the middle of an ocean, dining with the King and Queen of Denmark, and the King and Queen of Belgium, meeting The Who backstage, being entertained by the Empress of Iran Empress Farah in Paris, gambling with the Shah of Iran in Monte Carlo, and even being rescued by Shirley Temple Black after being arrested during the Czechoslovakian Revolution in the summer of 1968.

Gary says, “It took ten years for me to process that trip—five years of research plus five years of writing—because I wished to share the greatest adventure a young naïve boy from Rhode Island could ever imagine happening. So, fasten your seat belts for a ride inside the elite world of the rich and famous, and join me on the trip of my lifetime. A trip you will never forget. I promise you that!”

Lyla Fox knows she has a reputation at the SNAP Agency for impulsivity, but when she receives a threatening letter from a man she helped put in prison, she can’t stop herself from going all in to find out why he’s coming after her. Unfortunately, she’s going to need the help of the one person who questions her reckless choices more than anyone else.

Explosives and weapons specialist Nicolás Garcia agrees to help Lyla in order to keep her safe, but her recklessness continues to be a major concern, especially when her investigation into a conspiracy puts a target on her back. Dealing with bombs is dangerous. Working with Lyla is proving to be just as treacherous–to both the mission and his heart.

Natalie Walters closes out her SNAP Agency series with a bang with this nail-biting story of a deadly government conspiracy, an unlikely couple, and an ending that will leave you breathless.

All good things must come to an end, but I certainly don’t want this series to say goodbye! It has been an action-packed series with love and danger rolled into one.

In this final book, we watch the love story of Lyla and Nicolas unfold. It has been some time in the making, and the story does not disappoint. Lyla is impetuous, while Nicolas is steadfast, but when they say opposites attract, they aren’t kidding. These two could not be any different. But I think those differences pull them together and create a relationship that will always endure.

I loved the action that the SNAP agency experiences on a nearly daily basis. While I wouldn’t want to be in their shoes, I can appreciate their training, skills, and dedication to keeping this country safe. I still think my favorite character is Kekoa, but the rest of the cast has wormed their way into my heart.

Lyla and Nicolas have an interesting relationship before admitting they love each other. In one scene, he says he is a partly cloudy and armadillo kind of guy. I loved Lyla’s confusion and Nicolas’ explanation. I got a good chuckle from this interaction between the two, and it sets off a running joke for later in the book. Here is just a snippet of that scene.

“No, I get the partly cloudy. Makes sense because you’re a bit moody, but armadillo? I’m going to need an explanation on that.”

“…And an armadillo because of its built-in Kevlar.”

“…you realize you could’ve picked a crocodile or a rhino for the same reason?”

“True. But can they roll into a ball like a Transformer?”

Another scene that adds humor to this story is a visit to the Rage room. If you haven’t heard of these, you go into a room with items you can destroy with a bat, hammer, etc. It is an excellent way to get out your anger or frustration. This comment from Lyla definitely made me smile.

“I was just, um, thinking it wasn’t fair that I came out of there looking like Clifford the Big Red Dog licked my head. And you pop a baseball cap on your head and suddenly your MLB’s poster boy.”

The crux of the story kept me guessing and wondering who was behind the case they were investigating. I never suspected how this would play out and some news that Lyla would learn before it was all over regarding her family.

I am sad to see this series end, but I realized I had not read the first book. So I will have one more encounter with the SNAP agency. While you don’t have to read this series in order, I highly recommend that you do to follow the SNAP agency, and each book builds off of the previous one.

We give this book, and the series, 5 paws up.

In 1988, Sloan Hadfield’s brother Ridge went fishing with their father and never came home. Their father, a good-natured Vietnam veteran prone to violent outbursts, was arrested and charged with murder. Ridge’s body was never recovered, and Sloan’s mother— a brilliant ornithologist— slowly descended into madness, insisting her son was still alive.

Now twenty years later, Sloan’s life is unraveling. In the middle of a bitter divorce, she’s forced to return to her rural Texas hometown when her mother is discharged from a mental health facility.

Overwhelmed by memories and unanswered questions, Sloan returns to the last place her brother was seen all those years ago: Crow’s Nest Creek. There, she is shocked to hear a crow murmuring the same syllable over and over: Ridge, Ridge, Ridge.

When the body of another boy is found, Sloan begins to question what really happened to her brother all those years ago. What she discovers will shock her small community and turn her family upside down.

Secrets. Lies. Betrayal. Revenge. These are characteristics that will draw me in every time to a book.

This is the second book by this author, and I can safely say she brings a sense of intrigue to everything she touches. The books are filled with drama, family, mystery, and conflict.

This book has alternating timelines, much like her first book. We are taken back and forth in Sloan’s life, where we see the pain she felt at losing her brother but not really knowing what happened to him, to 20 years in the future, where she is dealing with the fallout from the past. Not to mention the secrets about her past that are slowly introduced to us throughout the story. So many surprises that kept me guessing throughout.

I felt for Sloan and all she was enduring in the present. I think that much of her past impacted how she acted and reacted in the present. Especially as more details were coming out about missing boys from the past, was her brother one of them?

The author also addresses tough topics like PTSD, mental health, and trust. Nothing is held back, and we see Sloan work her way through the issues that are keeping her from living a happy life. She may not see it that way, but considering everything that happened in the past, it isn’t surprising when her marriage doesn’t last and her reactions to those from her past. She also must face her past when dealing with her mother and her mental health issues. That can be hard, and I didn’t envy her in the least.

This book may resonate with some, and even if you cannot relate to portions of the story, it will hold you captive until you are left wrung out from the onslaught of emotions.

We give this book 5 paws up.

Review

This tragic yet beautiful story reminds us of the horrors that Jewish people endured during WWII and the Holocaust.

This story follows two individuals, Inge and Rudi. They are on opposite sides of the war, he is part of the Nazi brigade, and she is a Jewish woman interned at his camp. Yet, there is something in both of them that speaks to the other on a deeper level. Rudi is humane and isn’t fond of his position, but he knows that he can’t make massive changes without arousing suspicion. Inge is one voice of reason in his head, and she challenges him to treat all of the prisoners humanely, that he wouldn’t treat a dog like how he treats these people just because they are Jewish.

My heart hurt for all that these women endured at the camp. They were beaten, starved, and forced to work long hours. No one cared about them; they only cared about how much work they could get from them until the women perished from their living conditions. The guards were cruel on top of that and took any opportunity to flog and beat the women.

The story moves at a steady pace and picks up near the end when the situation is coming to a head. There is a twist at the end that I probably should have expected but did not. The interactions between all of the characters made me feel like I was right there experiencing this situation.

The story is also about friendship and love. We are shown that even two people on opposite sides of a situation can look deeper into the other and find common ground and love.

I was captured by this novel and had difficulty putting it down. It is a book that could remain on one’s mind long after the book has been read. We give this book 5 paws up.

She can’t help wondering if there’s something more out there for her. And she doesn’t understand why her mom won’t support her going to Nashville to find out.

Meanwhile, Bonnie threw in the towel on her love life long ago, but Loretta sure hasn’t. She’s determined to be swept off her feet, and she wants the same for her daughter. When the hunky new owner of The Drunken Sailor turns the tables on the band and Avril announces she’s leaving Moonlight Harbor, Bonnie’s comfortable life seems to be drifting away. Review

If you ever had the fantasy of writing music or singing, you will be able to relate to many of the characters in this novel. Three generations of women have a band called The Mermaids, and they are quite a hit in town. Don’t mess with small-town favorites; it will cause you problems. However, the youngest wants to follow her dreams of being a songwriter, the middle one doesn’t want to let her daughter go because she knows the heartache it might cause, and the oldest believes that everyone should follow their dreams…and find a good man!

Parts of this story sent up red flags, and what I thought would happen did happen. You will probably be able to figure it out, so I won’t mention which character or the situation. There is enough drama, along with love, that it rounds out the story nicely.

Bonnie, the middle one, has had a life that wasn’t quite what she expected. She doesn’t want her daughter to fall into the same traps, but at the same time, she wants her daughter to be happy. I was glad to see that Bonnie started opening up to men again. I had to chuckle at the voices in her head that made up “Team Estrogen.” These voices added quite a bit of humor at different times. Let’s just say they wanted to see Bonnie with a man and getting some action. The man that has his sights on her is JJ, the new bar owner in town. They are attracted to one another, and a mistake on JJ’s part when it comes to the house band in his bar nearly causes issues. I admired that he held back, treated Bonnie respectfully, and didn’t rush her into a relationship. I think he recognized that it would take time to break through her walls.

I really enjoyed this town, the characters, and the music. This is the seventh in a series. While it can be read as a standalone, you are better served to start at the beginning to follow the characters in this town and understand the relationship of everyone. I need to go back and read the first few books and learn more about some of the other characters in town.

We give this book 5 paws up.

Review

This was an action-packed, informative, and entertaining novel. This is perfect for anyone that loves space or the thought of being an astronaut.

While some of this is based on fact, it brings to life what could happen on a trip into space. It isn’t like Star Trek or any other sort of sci-fi show, but it outlines the dangers and pitfalls, along with the wonderment of all things beyond our atmosphere.

A small number of teenagers are chosen, via a contest, to go into space and around the moon. They train for all possibilities, and it isn’t guaranteed that they will end up in space; it all depends on how well they do learning the ropes. All four of the teens are gifted in their own right and bring a lot to the table. We see this as they encounter many obstacles on their journey. However, these events help bring them closer and team up to help everyone survive. I came to respect each of these teens. While they might have had the typical teen angst, they were also bright and had their own issues they were dealing with at the time.

This is not a superficial story; it delves deep into the fears, hopes, and desires of all of the teens, especially Fin since he is the main character. I found myself on pins and needles, wondering how events would turn out for them. I can’t even imagine being as brave as these characters are in the book. Heck, I can’t even imagine going into space.

I do think that this book is geared toward those slightly older than middle grade only because of the technical terms and equipment that are mentioned throughout the book. I used my great-niece as a guide, she is an advanced reader, but even she would have to ask about different words in the book. This isn’t a bad thing, and it would open up dialogue between children and their parents. However, this is still a very fascinating book that anyone will enjoy.

We give it 5 paws up.

Review

If you enjoy a good mystery and discovering new authors, this is a great book for that. Not only do you get top-notch stories, but you might also find a new favorite author in the mix.

I have heard of a few of these authors, but not all, so I was excited to read stories to learn their writing styles and if these would be new authors for me to add to my ever-growing TBR list.

Each story is complete, with clues hiding or in plain sight and intriguing characters. Since these are short stories, there is not a lot of depth to the characters, town, or mystery; but that is to be expected since they are all short stories. There were a few that I wanted to know more about or be able to continue the story in other books. That may or may not be possible. I will have to look at the specific books to see if those characters continue into other books.

This is a great book to read over lunch or while waiting at a doctor’s office or other places. The stories are just long enough to keep you engaged but wrap up quickly if you are short on time.

Overall we give this 5 paws up.

Review

I really enjoy reading speculative books because, many times, the truth is buried somewhere in the book or at least one viewpoint of the world we are living in.

Imagine being able to kill one person with no repercussions. Who would you want to eliminate and why? Lynell Mize has her sights set on an abusive stepfather. No one would blame her since he does not appear to be a worthwhile individual. Now imagine you are there to register who you want to take out, and you hear your name. That has to be very unsettling. What do you do? If you can elude the person for two weeks, they can’t kill you after that time, and they have lost their opportunity. I know I would try and escape or hide from that person and pray for the best.

We learn a lot about Lynell during this time once she hears her name and tries to avoid being caught by the person that registered her. However, we learn that multiple people have registered her, and she is being hunted. Who does she trust? Can she trust anyone? When the truth came out about why she was being hunted, it blew my mind! I admired Lynell even more at that point and everything she endured to try and uncover the truth.

Lynell is the type of woman that I think many of us hope that we can be – strong, intelligent, and willing to protect those that she loves. There is a slight mystery along with the suspense of this book. I figured out part of it but still didn’t know how it all would come together in the end.

I was also rooting for Lynell and Danny’s relationship. Would they be able to get back on track? Some secrets come out that could make or break their relationship.

This was a riveting story, and now I’m curious what the movie will be like and if it will live up to the book.

We give this 5 paws up.

Welcome to the hometown everyone wants to call their own.

Gloria Bachman, a retired bank executive, has eight weeks to flip a location on Comfort’s High Street into a boutique chocolate shop. Defying expectations for “women of a certain age,” Gloria rediscovers talents and a sharpening of skills. If only she could read people as well as she does a spreadsheet. Even with the renovation in good hands, the subsequent struggle to name the shop brings Gloria and her business partner into conflict with a shady citizen. While Gloria is capable of remaining in her retirement rut while opening a business, two competing social groups try to lure her into their networks, causing Gloria to wonder if she ever knew Comfort at all. A murder rocks the community and revives investigative instincts honed by years in the banking industry.

Mason Lassiter, a disgraced CEO, has his own dramas to escape, and the offbeat town seems the perfect place to recover his self-esteem. What was to be a quick reversal of fortunes becomes a quest to right a deeply felt injustice. Fascinated by the women driving the energy of Comfort, he extends his stay to find out why the small town is the backdrop to their best tales. Tangling with his neighbor Gloria becomes his favorite pastime and the key to unlocking the mystery of his past—if he can convince her to trust him.

Chocolate and joy become the glue bringing an unlikely cast together, which just might change Gloria’s and Mason’s course for the better. With characters familiar from previous Comfort novels and introducing fresh names, Sweet Comfort will entertain those who like their stories seasoned with coziness and sweet, second chances.

Ahhhh, the town of Comfort is calling, and I answered! If you haven’t read any of this author’s Comfort series, you are missing out. While this includes many of the characters from those books and continues the story, there are new faces in town that we can come to love as much as the others. Plus, there will be chocolate!

Georgia is a woman that I definitely admire. She has dealt with some issues in her past work at a bank in the area, including being forced out thanks to the male ego and more. Being burned by a man has soured her outlook on men for the most part. However, enter Morgan Lassiter. A hunky man from Dallas has caught her eye, and she has caught his. However, she is reluctant to be more than friends, but maybe he will wear her down. I love when a new romance takes its time for the characters to experience each other and what they could potentially bring to the table and the relationship.

I mentioned chocolate. Georgia and Kali are opening a high-end chocolate store and are working non-stop to get everything done before their grand opening. There are some setbacks, as would be expected, but each one just strengthens what we know about these women and the skills that they have that they don’t even realize. I love when people learn more about themselves and what they are capable of in the process of a new venture. I am glad I don’t live in Comfort (although sometimes I wish that I did) because I would be there every day indulging in the truffles, bars, and other assorted chocolates. This author speaks to my heart when she includes chocolate in the mix.

There are a few minor mysteries included in this book. The first is who killed Ted Bodine. Georgia has an analytical mind, and it is evident as she susses out the clues and the facts as different situations present themselves. Now the mystery doesn’t really start until 40% into the book, so I would say that this is less mystery and more romance and second chances. There is also the mystery of Mason’s wife. She is supposedly deceased, but signs point other ways. Will Georgia and Mason determine if she faked her death or is truly gone? These add a twist to the story and create more depth.

I love the rivalry between the Knitters Club and the Bunco ladies. While there is some tension between various characters, it is also nice to see them come together in times of need, no matter which club they belong to. Plus, it adds some spice to the story. I’m not sure I’m Wanda’s biggest fan, but she does add some complexity to the story.

This story made me smile, laugh, drool (over chocolate), and engaged my brain to sort out the mystery.

We give this book 5 paws up.

Synopsis

Just when everything is returning to the calm that Quinn Caine and her sidekicks, Ruff Barker Ginsburg and Sister Daria, are used to in their beloved town of Vienna, a Broadway star crash-lands into their peace and quiet. Former ‘player’, Chad Frivole, is Vienna’s prodigal son—the once notorious lothario has returned a Broadway star, ready to make a different kind of mark on his hometown.

Not everyone is celebrating the Tony-award-winner’s return. Chad’s a triple threat—with a cast of characters lining up to seek their revenge on him. So, when he turns up dead in his car, trapped with a sack full of snakes, Quinn can’t say she’s surprised—but promises handsome detective Aiden Harrington that she’s staying out of this local mystery.

That is, until someone starts threatening her brother’s life. It’s true, Sebastian ‘Bash’ Caine used to be a womanizer, just like Chad. And the killer doesn’t seem to care that he’s not that man anymore. Bash Caine is in the killer’s sights, and unless Quinn and her crew can find the killer in time, whoever it is will drag her brother into his final act on this mortal coil.

Review

I think this might be a new favorite series! I have a lot of those if you follow any of my reviews. But this one has engaging characters and a mystery that kept me guessing until the very end.

Normally, I’m a stickler for starting a series at the beginning. However, this is only the second book, and I felt like there was enough backstory that I didn’t feel lost in any of the personal relationships that occurred in the series. The story is also told from two perspectives, Quinn and her cousin Daria. I had read books before that had multiple points of view, and they didn’t seem to work, or at least I was always confused when the voices changed. That is not true with this book. It was obvious to me when it was Quinn or Daria because they are very different. Daria is a novice nun; however, she is tested by Lucas and their attraction to one another. Will she go through with her vows, or was she just running away thinking that the convent was a safe place? There is a bit of a cliffhanger at the end regarding Daria.

Quinn had a rough start in the first book; however, it has led to her relationship with Aidan, the local police detective. I really enjoyed watching their relationship and the respect that they have for one another. Quinn is inquisitive but manages to end up in the thick of things, even when she isn’t trying.

I also enjoyed the dog training that Daria and the nuns do at the convent. While that is just a small notation in the book, I thought it was a nice twist for that to be an area that they help in their community.

If you are squeamish about snakes, spiders, and other creepy crawlies, just be forewarned that there are some scattered throughout the book. It added an interesting twist to how people were murdered, especially once the killer is revealed and the truth comes to light.

I am looking forward to reading the next book in this series, but I will probably have to wait a while!

We give this book 5 paws up.
