Synopsis

The world of the Lands is filled with dangerous beasts, warmed by lava lakes, full of exotic plants, and infused with the magic of nature. This land is inhabited by very different people, but the most numerous and influential of them are called Igni. Not only do their species have a very distinctive look; their culture and way of life are also quite exceptional. This book will familiarize you a bit with them, their world, and their way of life.

The first story will tell you about Sabiri and Iskrila. One day, their quiet and pleasant life was assaulted, their well-being endangered, forcing them to retaliate. They had to protect not only themselves but their entire village. Just like in old times, they go to war. Yet now the threat came from the most unlikely place. Will Sabiri and Iskrila be able to prevail? To what lengths will they be willing to go? Will they be able to show kindness to their enemies, or will they destroy them in bitter rage?

The second story will tell you about Bacara and Maria. To protect their village from an imminent attack, they go on a journey to find magical artifacts of immense power. Or no power at all. You would need to be a mage to understand such objects and control them. But without a mage to help them, Maria and Bacara have to act blindly, all to gain an advantage against their foes. Will they find their prize? Will the artifacts obey their new masters or destroy them?

«The question»

“Why did it happen?” Maria finally said after a few minutes. “Not like it’s the first time I’ve faced danger…”

Maria looked Bacara in the eyes and leaned forward, trying to find answers in them. “Why did I panic? After everything I’ve done before meeting you? After everything we’ve done together? Why did I freeze now? I even had weapons; I even had my shield… I had you at my side!”

Now Bacara leaned forward and took Maria’s hands in hers. Face to face, they were as close to each other as their horns allowed.

“Are you saying you were always fearless?” Bacara smiled. “Do you remember your first time? When you were in true danger? When you knew that a single mistake could cost you your life? Are you sure you weren’t afraid then? I really don’t know — we hadn’t met yet.”

Maria did not answer.

“How old were you back then? I guess you’d been training for a battle, preparing for it, asking advice, hearing stories about it. But you were not ready for it, not really. You didn’t really know anything about a battle, about danger, about fear, about death. Nothing can prepare a person to face that. Nothing but experience.”

Bacara sat more comfortably and started to clean the dried blood from Maria’s sword.

“Same here. I doubt you’ve infiltrated a village before. Your enemy was always right in front of you. You always knew what was coming. But not today. Every door could’ve opened, every shadow could’ve hidden death, every step could’ve been your last. I think what’s more important is that you haven’t had a clear goal. You always push yourself towards it: you count dead enemies, cleaned houses, killed animals, even covered distance. You don’t count how many push-ups you did — you count how many there are still left to do. I also do that sometimes. Today you were wandering in darkness. But the next time will be easier. You know that!”

Maria looked away and lay down. Her sword was now clean. But Bacara wasn’t about to look away as well. Wasn’t going to sleep while she could see the light, reflecting in Maria’s open eyes. Very slowly, the sky was becoming brighter and brighter. How much time did they have until the village would awaken? How fast would they find out what had just happened? Why? Why did that igni wake up? They didn’t have to kill anyone! If they could’ve just grabbed the thing and gotten out…

“I am afraid of many things, you know that,” Maria broke the silence. “Frightened even. That thing I’m teaching people — ‘Don’t think, just do’ — did it ever work? I mean, in a real situation?” she asked.

“You know the answer,” Bacara said. “You definitely kept saying that to yourself today — and here we are! As safe as we’re gonna be. They won’t see us from the ground.”

“As safe as we’re gonna be? But why?” Maria sat up and looked Bacara in the eye. “Why can’t we be home? I know why I’m here. But why did you agree to this?”

Synopsis

In 1933, before World War II, and the Holocaust, the world was unaware of Hitler’s plans to exterminate millions.

Author Cathy A. Lewis discovered a tattered leather suitcase containing her deceased father’s journal documenting his six-week trek through Europe in 1933 while on his way to the 4th Boy Scout World Jamboree.

Inspired by her father’s historical recount, The Road We Took is the four-day epic tale of a desperate group of Jewish citizens attempting to escape Nazi-occupied Germany.

Fascinating characters come together in a narrative of extreme courage, budding adolescent love, and their fight for survival.

Life in Germany will never be the same as Hitler and the Nazis advance their propaganda campaign, to systematically murder the Jewish population.

And this was only the beginning.

Review

This is such an amazing story that is based on actual events of the author’s father’s time in Europe in 1933. Imagine being a young man on his way to a Boy Scout Jamboree and the adventures they must have had at that time. Granted, not everything was wonderful as the characters are thrown into Nazi-occupied Germany and the beginnings of their attempts to rid their country of the Jewish population.

This story is told from multiple points of view and the time in 1933 covers about four days. There are flashbacks to 1925 that give us a deeper understanding of some of the characters and how they became who they were eight years later. I don’t know if I have a favorite character or perspective because each gives us a look at their life and the trials and tribulations they endured from a fanatical rule. It also reminds us what a terrible time in history this was and all those that were harmed because of their religious upbringing.

There is a little bit of a mystery tied into this story, who killed one of the characters and why? The answer is not surprising but I won’t reveal too much, you’ll have to read the book to find out.

It is interesting how all of the lives intersected and came together in the end. I started putting a few of the pieces together but not everything, so it was a treat to uncover details that brought this story full circle. If anything, this reminds us to be thankful for what we have in this world.

We give this book 5 paws up.

Excerpt

When they stepped through the opening, it felt as if they had entered an entirely different house. From here, they could look out over the lake, a view of the valley framed by carved archways of streaked yellow stone that led onto a crumbling balcony. The railing—constructed of a row of winding bronze roses—was badly tarnished, and Fi could see at least one patch where the wooden floorboards had fallen out altogether, leaving her peering down at the deep water below. She made a mental note to be careful where she stepped.

Fi could only imagine how beautiful this place must have been, even just a hundred years ago, before the last Witches had fled. It was the kind of building that probably could have stood another thousand years if anyone had been around to tend to it.

In the evening light, the floating specks of dust from the broken spell burned like flecks of gold, illuminating wall-to-wall bookshelves filled with all the things someone had hidden here: old vials of colored glass; fine porcelain teacups hand-painted with blushing roses; and spools of expensive fabrics dyed burgundy and cobalt, the trademark colors of the silk makers in southern Andar. Fi hadn’t seen craftsmanship like this since the antique shops of Pisarre. Darfell was rich in ore, wood, and wine, but most of its exports were raw materials. Artifacts like this had to be from Andar. The shelves bowed under the weight of ancient books with thick cloth bookmarks spilling over the yellowed pages.

“This is more like it!”

Fi glanced over at Shane, who had gone straight for the treasure. A weathered chest on the far side of the room spilled over with gold chains and ropes of jewels. A silver crown set with pink diamonds already sat askew on the girl’s head. Fi sighed. In that way, Shane was like every other treasure hunter she’d ever known.

Fi had just stepped around a hole in the creaking floorboards, making for the books, when something else caught her eye. A narrow alcove had been cut into the wall near the balcony, and inside sat a long, low table draped in black cloth. Something shone in the table’s center, something that gleamed like shards of white marble. No, Fi realized as she moved toward it—it was bone.

She drifted closer and stared down at the shattered pieces of a bone drop spindle, smooth and pure white as if they had just been polished. She couldn’t tear her eyes away. A few rust-red drops clung to the whorl, and Fi suddenly wondered whether this was the spindle from the story, the one that had been hidden in Briar Rose’s garden.

Her hand seemed to move on its own. Almost against her will, she found herself reaching for the broken piece of the shaft. She hissed as something bit into her finger, making her jerk back. Only now did she notice the snapped-off end of the spindle hidden under the other pieces, sharpened to a point.

Suddenly it was hard to think. Black slanted into the edge of her vision, and all the blood in her body seemed to be rushing the wrong way, leaving her faint. Fi stumbled backward onto the sagging balcony. Her legs trembled as if the floor had begun to shake. A drop of blood welled up on the tip of her finger. Fi stared at it, captivated, the words from the ruin’s door echoing in her mind.

A drop of blood, a drop of hope . . .

“Fi, watch out!”

Shane’s shout brought Fi back to herself in a rush. She hadn’t imagined it—the weathered boards under her feet were shaking and groaning. The balcony was collapsing under her weight. A great crack split the air as the support joists snapped out of the divots in the stone wall.

Fi jumped away, but she was too late. She felt a great heave in her stomach as the whole balcony collapsed, taking a large chunk of the room with it.

She threw her rope helplessly toward the carved archways. The metal ring bounced off the stone—and then she was falling, the breath crushed out of her. Shane threw herself down at the edge of the ripped-apart floor, her hand outstretched over the gap. The distance between them might as well have been a mile. All Fi could hear was the echo of Shane shouting her name as she plunged toward the lake.

At least I didn’t take any of the precious books down with me.

It was her last thought before she hit the water.

The Secretive Writer

by Richard T. Ryan

I am of the firm belief that writing is an intensely personal experience. As a result, writers are filled with idiosyncrasies, and many are slaves to a routine. Some have to write 1,000 words a day; others have to finish three pages. Some need absolute quiet while others compile playlist to inspire them during their daily sessions at the keyboard.

While I am not slave to any set schedule, I do have my preferences in that I prefer quiet and I think I do my best work late at night. However, I can write with the TV on in the background and when inspiration strikes, I head to the computer no matter what time it is.

However, I do have one hard and fast rule that I stick to while I am writing. I never discuss the plot with anyone. Fortunately, I have a very understanding wife in that regard, and since she’s the first to read my finished manuscripts, she knows she’ll find out what I’ve been up to before anyone else.

I adapted this practice after talking with a friend of mine who was a very successful playwright. I asked him what he was working on and he wouldn’t tell me. At the time, I wasn’t writing novels, but I was working for a newspaper and turning out weekly articles and editing copy.

However, I filed that nugget away and since I’ve started my Sherlock Holmes books, it has stood me in good stead.

Now, why so secretive? As my friend explained, your friends will either praise your work, in which case that might be all your ego needs so there’s no need to finish. On the other hand, the criticism, although well-intended, might cause you to doubt yourself and thus undermine your confidence.

At any rate, not discussing the plot keeps everything neutral. I don’t have to consider pluses and minuses; I just have to keep writing.

In the past, I’ve often observed that writing is a lonely profession, and keeping secrets just makes you feel more isolated.

However, when the final reveal comes and I deliver a finished book to my wife and my Beta readers that no one knows anything about, it’s refreshing and stimulating to get their honest responses – and some of these have been critical. Still, their reactions are totally forthright in that they haven’t been tainted by expectations based on what they thought of the plot or expected from it. All things considered, that’s the way I’d prefer it.

Every year, all across the planet, people simply vanish, completely disappear and are never seen again.  Some areas of the world are well known for this phenomenon.  Infinity’s Gateway opens with a very famous incident that took place just after the end of World War II with the United States Navy.  The story then jumps to the present day with an unexplainable event that occurs off the coast of Florida, an event that cannot be ignored by the military.

The Navy ship Eclipse and its crew are sent to investigate, but after several days come up empty.  Two days before returning to port, the event reoccurs, and the Eclipse is caught up in something it cannot escape.  The Eclipse and its crew suddenly find themselves completely isolated, all communication lost, surrounded by a terribly hostile environment where each day is a struggle to survive.  Infinity’s Gateway is an intense, action packed story of survival, self-reliance, and discovery.

Praise

Infinity’s Gateway is an engaging science fiction thriller with tones of Michael Crichton Tom Clancy.  To fans of the science fiction genre, it will feel like an old friend with a surprising, and exciting new makeover.”  —Joseph Mauceri, Executive Editor, Fearsmag.com.

Just when you thought the Bermuda Triangle was a myth, along comes a story that makes you wonder if it is real and what might happen if you were caught in this phenomenon.

The story starts during WWII when several fighter planes go missing. Jump forward 50ish years later and some strange energy readings are noted and a research vessel with a supercomputer is sent off to try and figure out what is going on and how it might impact the world. What happens next is nothing anyone could ever imagine.

This action-packed adventure will take you on the ride of your life. It is hard to tell you much about what I liked without giving away too much of the story. The details were amazing and I feel like the author did a lot of research to get some of the details correct…and here is where I can’t say what without giving away too much.  The characters are diverse and multi-faceted and each one brings a special something to the story. I enjoyed the interaction between the characters and their actions and reactions to the crazy situations that they found themselves in and how they handled the unknown. I thought about how I might react and I don’t think it would have been as well as these characters.

And then the ending…talk about a cliffhanger! OMG, I am now so intrigued as to what might happen next for the cast of characters. There are so many possibilities and I can only imagine where this story might go next.

If you are a fan of science fiction, adventure, perhaps just a bit of the supernatural/paranormal, and staying up late to finish the book then you will want to add this one to your to be read list.

We give this book 5 paws up.

Every now and then author James S. Parker has a vision.  And, when he does, he sees people and places off in the misty distance.  Sometimes these visions are futuristic and filled with danger.  Most often they are mystical, with good and evil and a cast of characters who beautifully represent both.

In his high school years, James experienced a spine-tingling brush with the supernatural.  That single event – complete with the sound of heavy footsteps and an invisible visitor – etched forever in his mind the idea that life is much more mysterious than we oftentimes admit — that the spiritual world is all around us, and that its impact on us cannot be denied.

Though he sees through a glass darkly, he writes as though he has been granted a glimpse into the unknown, one that has informed his novels and their powerful stories of good and evil and the struggles we all face every day to assure that good wins.

Infinity’s Gateway, the first book in a fascinating sci-fi adventure trilogy, is his latest work.  James lives in San Antonio, Texas with his wife Margaret. He is available for in-person and online book club visits.

All the Cowboys Ain’t Gone is the rollicking adventure story of Lincoln Smith, a young Texan living at the beginning of the twentieth century, who thinks of himself as the last true cowboy. He longs for the days of the Old West, when men like his father, a famous Texas Ranger, lived by the chivalric code. Lincoln finds himself hopelessly out of time and place in the fast-changing United States of the new century. When he gets his heart broken by a sweetheart who doesn’t appreciate his anachronistic tendencies, he does what any sensible young romantic would do: he joins the French Foreign Legion. On his way to an ancient and exotic country at the edge of the Sahara, Lincoln encounters a number of curious characters and strange adventures, from a desert hermit who can slow up time to a battle with a crocodile cult that worships the god of death. He meets them all with his own charming brand of courage and resourcefulness.

Want to be taken on a wild adventure? Imagine a cross between James Bond and Macgyver, throw in the Wild West and North Africa, and the result will be this book.

“I like gettin’ out and see what’s stirring with the new day, while it’s still fresh and wild, before others get a chance to mar it’s newness.”

I started reading this book and wasn’t sure what to expect. We meet Lincoln Smith, a young man that loses his father to some outlaws in the wild west of Texas in the late 1800s. His father was a role model for Lincoln and he did his best to emulate his father all his life. I have to admit I could relate a little bit to Lincoln and how he did not like things to change. He didn’t like the trains coming through his town and definitely did not like the horseless carriages he encountered as a young man. He even says he was born too late and should have been born about 50 years earlier.

Lincoln decides after a Wild West show closes that he is going to join the French Foreign Legion to see places he has only heard of and places he hasn’t. We have all heard of this outfit and I have to admit, I really don’t know much about them other than they are a military organization. Apparently, this organization still exists and I could find myself going down a rabbit hole reading about the group but stopped myself. Anyway, Lincoln makes his way to France to join up in the early 1900s and meets Jake and Johnny, two men that will have his back more times than he can count. What follows is their adventure.

Lincoln has some crazy good luck throughout the book. He manages to wriggle his way out of tough situations and while it may seem impossible, it is what made this book so fascinating to me. I think Lincoln is a bit naive and could have easily been taken advantage of (and probably was a few times) but luckily he met various characters that took him under their wing and watched out for him.

There is one character that I didn’t like at first but came to admire and that is Amanda. She is the daughter of an Ambassador and she is very hard-headed and insists on doing what she wants despite the potential danger. But I think that is what attracts Lincoln to her and there could be a romance brewing but only time will tell.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and once the action really picked up about halfway through the book, I had a hard time putting it down. Sure, some of it may seem impossible but that is the great thing about books, they make the impossible possible and let us imagine a world other than our own.

We give this 5 paws up.

Though John J. Jacobson didn’t join the French Foreign Legion after being jilted by a girlfriend, or over his displeasure of missing the last great cattle drive, he has, borrowing Churchill’s phrase, lived a rather variegated life. He was born in Nevada, grew up in the West, surfed big waves in Hawaii, circled the world thrice, survived the sixties and seventies, corporate America, and grad school. Among other degrees he has an MA in Renaissance literature from Claremont Graduate University.

Review

This is the follow-up book to First Fate which I just loved and had me rethinking about ever taking a cruise again. I had high hopes for this book and it did not disappoint.

In this book, the small number of survivors from the cruise ship end up on an island. Sadly, the island is deserted which means they have to use all of their skills to stay alive. Thankfully, there are several in the group that have the skills needed to find food, water, shelter, etc. There is tension between some of the survivors and Zon is definitely a loose cannon. He was in the first book and he doesn’t change his tune in this book. The only thing that keeps him going and assisting everyone else is another survivor, Jessie. Perhaps she is using her feminine wiles on him, or maybe she really does like him.

While a lot of the book seems to focus on Zon, we do have more insight into the other main characters. I am still on the fence about Gabby. She is more concerned about herself and the kids than everyone else especially when her husband, Mac, wants to jump in and help everyone else. It is his calling and she doesn’t quite seem to understand that. However, she does have a redeeming moment when she realizes that perhaps she is not pulling her weight the way she should.

Gunner is still a leader at heart and he has learned how to manipulate everyone to help make sure everyone survives. I use the word manipulate, but not in a bad way. He can read people and understands what makes them tick and how he needs to approach them to ensure that everything is handled as situations arise.

The death count continues to rise on the island and the discovery of a small yacht gives them hope that perhaps they can still be rescued. No one knows what is going on anywhere else in the world as the EMP has knocked out all communications and even the discovery of HAM radios doesn’t raise anyone to find out what is going on in the world. I am amazed at the hope that everyone has that they will still be rescued.

I don’t want to divulge too much, but the ending….oh my goodness! It definitely helps fill in a few blanks and leaves you hanging for the last book in this series. I cannot wait to read that one and see how this all ends.

I stayed up late reading this book and could not put it down. I have to give it 5 paws up and highly recommend this series.

Both a frightening apocalyptic story set in the southern United States and a character-focused, deeply moving literary thriller.

What would happen if technology all over the world suddenly stopped working?

When a strange new star appears in the sky, human life instantly grinds to a halt. Across the world, anything and everything electronic stops working completely.

At first, the event seems like a bizarre miracle to Seth Black–it interrupts his suicide attempt and erases gambling debt that threatened to destroy his family. But when Seth and his wife, Natalie, realize the electricity isn’t coming back on, that their food supplies won’t last, they begin to wonder how they and their two sons will survive.

Meanwhile, screenwriter Thomas Phillips–an old friend of Natalie’s–has just picked up Skylar Stover, star of his new movie, at the airport when his phone goes dead, and planes begin to fall from the sky.

Thomas has just completed a script about a similar electromagnetic event that ended the world. Now, he’s one of the few who recognizes what’s happening and where it will lead.

When Thomas and Skylar decide to rescue Natalie and Seth, the unwilling group must attempt to survive together as the world falls apart. They try to hide in Thomas’s home and avoid desperate neighbors, but fear they’ll soon be roaming the streets with starving refugees and angry vigilantes intent on forming new governments. It’s all they can do to hold on to each other and their humanity.

Yet all the while, unbeknownst to them, Aiden Christopher–a bitter and malignant man leveraging a crumbling society to live out his darkest, most amoral fantasies–is fighting to survive as well. And he’s on a collision course with Thomas, Skylar, and the Black family…

Excerpt from Chapter 2 of HOUSE OF THE RISING SUN by Richard Cox

In this scene, screenwriter Thomas Phillips has just picked up actress Skylar Stover at DFW International Airport. They’re on the phone, speaking with a man threatening to commit suicide, when the call mysteriously drops.

HOLY SHIT THE SKY IS FALLING

“Dude,” Seth said in a weak voice, “I told you everything you need to know. Can’t you just let me be done with it?”

“Don’t do it!” shouted Thomas, surprised at the sudden empathy he felt for this man he’d never met. “I can help you. You don’t need to do this.”

“Help me with what?”

“With money! With whatever you need.”

“If this is about money,” Skylar offered loudly, “I’ll help, too.”

“Who is that?” grunted Seth. He sounded lethargic, like he’d woken from a deep sleep.

“We just want to help you. You don’t need insurance. You don’t—”

“It doesn’t matter. Even if you paid every last dime of my debt, I still have to live with what I’ve done. And I can’t. I won’t. It’s too late.”

“It’s never too late, Seth. Let me help you.”

“Just come here when it’s over. Please.”

“Seth.”

“Promise me, man. Promise me you’ll come here and take care of my family. Please.”

Seth was crying. His voice was hoarse, and he coughed as if his lungs were failing him.

“Please, man. Promise me.”

“I promise, Seth. Just stop and I’ll do whatever you want.”

Now there was no answer.

“Seth?”

Thomas pressed the phone to his ear, trying to dampen the sound of the wind, but it was no use. Eventually he looked at the display again and saw it was dark. He swiped and tapped the screen, but nothing happened.

“Thomas, look out!”

He glanced up and saw he was about to rear-end a white Ford sedan that was either slowing down or stopped. He quickly checked his mirrors and veered into an adjacent lane. Jammed his hand on the horn.

“What the hell is wrong with you?” he yelled involuntarily. “This is a highway!”

“Thomas, again!”

He looked back at the road and saw they were rapidly gaining on a black pickup truck rolling on four enormous tires. Thomas changed lanes, sliding just past the truck and the noise of its monster tread.

“What the hell is going on?” he yelled.

“I don’t know, but something is weird. All the cars are slowing down. Look over there. It’s the same thing on both sides of the road.”

Skylar was right. Everyone was slowing down, but no one seemed to be using their brakes. Well, wait. In the far-right lane, about fifty yards ahead of them, a small car came to a screeching stop and Thomas heard the dull thunk of bumper-to-bumper contact.

“He totally hit that truck!” Sky yelled. “Why is everyone stopping?”

Thomas had slowed down and was switching lanes almost continuously as vehicles around him came to rest. When he looked briefly at Skylar, he saw something in the sky above her, something so odd and unexpected that he could hardly make sense of it.

People were beginning to climb out of their vehicles. Others stood in the road, gawking at the sky. Thomas moved toward the inner shoulder, trying to divine a clear path, but other drivers were having the same idea. Ahead, a woman stood beside a giant Lexus SUV and gestured to him.

“Skylar,” he said. “Look in the sky on your right.”

Thomas was rapidly approaching the woman on the shoulder. She was tall and thin, wearing a yellow sundress and flip flops. Maybe thirty-five years old.

“What is that?” Sky asked.

“Looks like a star, doesn’t it?”

“Yeah…except you don’t usually see stars during the day.”

They reached the woman in the sundress. She approached the driver’s side door. Her face was drained of color.

“Excuse me, sir. Do you know what’s happened?”

“I’m not sure. But I would guess it had something to do with that.”

Thomas gestured toward the new point of light in the sky, which was twenty or so degrees above the horizon, brilliant and white. It was bigger and brighter than any nighttime star but much smaller than the sun, which was almost directly above it. In different circumstances, like if he had been on his back porch, looking at it over the lake, the new star might have been the most amazing thing Thomas had ever seen. Instead, Natalie’s husband was trying to kill himself and the airport freeway was a war zone and the whole world seemed to have lost its mind. No vehicle was operational except his and people were noticing. Especially because, aside from the rumble of his engine exhaust, the airport was quiet. Eerily quiet. Nothing else mechanical was running.

Nothing.

The woman’s face was slack, her mouth wide open. She seemed to be holding back tears. Next to him, Skylar whispered words he couldn’t hear.

Something was terribly wrong about the silence. It was never quiet on this road, ever, not even in the middle of the night, because D/FW was one of the busiest airports in the world. The sound of jet engines and traffic was so ubiquitous you never even noticed it.

Until it wasn’t there at all.

“I’m sorry,” he said to the woman. “We have to go.”

Thomas inched his car forward. The woman’s eyes widened.

“Wait! Can you help me? I’m stuck here.”

Thomas kept driving, watching the stalled cars carefully. He picked up speed. Changed lanes often.

“Don’t you think we should have helped that woman?” Sky asked.

“Help her do what?”

“I don’t know. Get home. Something.”

“We only have so much room. We can’t take them all.”

Thomas realized why his car worked and the others didn’t. Honestly, he’d known it all along.

Excerpt

Three girls and a man crashed to the ground in a tangle of limbs. Phoebe groaned, rolled away from the thing poking her in the back, and reached up to the knot forming on her throbbing head. The pain was a good thing: it meant she was alive. But alive where? Had Rhea’s black hole deposited them near their home in upstate New York? Not likely. She glanced around the gloom—woods, a forest maybe. Even some strange, savage land would be okay as long as that crazy man they’d barely escaped from hadn’t tracked them here.

Phoebe reached out into the dark with her mind. Could these be the woods they had often visited growing up? The National Forest near Seneca Lake was big enough to get lost in for days. And then there was that story of the wild man living there. An urban legend maybe. Phoebe wasn’t sure. Weird that Rhea would bring them here. She reached out with her mind again. No one.

Nothing seemed broken, so she got to her knees and saw Dione lying flat on her back a few feet away. She looked paler than usual, like death. Steven Dryer lay sprawled to the left. She studied his still form, regret bubbling up in her. He’d discovered the triplets by accident. He hadn’t known of their power, but had gotten a good taste of it since meeting them. Too bad for him. They’d captured him and with their abilities forced him to help. It was a debt he owed anyway after stealing from their mother. There was no way he could escape them, but he’d slowly come to understand his purpose in all this. He was meant to help their family, and because Phoebe had gazed into his mind, she knew him, all his predilections, every nuance of him. She knew he would keep helping even without her control. And because of this knowledge it wasn’t much of a gamble to trust him. He’d come through big time and been brave in the face of that bastard’s attacks at the museum.

Only Rhea seemed to have managed a smooth landing. Phoebe reached out with her mind, feeling for Rhea’s aches and pains. She knew then that her knees had taken a beating. She’d been thrown to the ground with enough force to break them, but Rhea seemed ok otherwise. The four of them were still alive, and that was the only thing that mattered. Not their tattered nightclothes or soiled appearance.

Phoebe managed to stand on shaky legs and tried to get some sense of the direction they’d taken, of the length of time they’d been borne aloft. It was useless. She doubted even Rhea would know. The disturbance that had been their grandmother’s quantum trace and the explosion that had destroyed the museum had eliminated such sensory perception.
She managed to shuffle to where Rhea was bent over Dione, crying. Di was unresponsive, the result of the attack earlier that very night. Phoebe went to Dryer next and tried to stir him with a mental probe but gave up soon after. Her skills were still new. She wouldn’t risk damaging him.

About the Author

Stanley P. Brown always had heroes as a child. Born in Plaquemine, Louisiana to Joseph Harry, a painter, and his wife Vivian, a homemaker, these heroes mostly took the form of his big brother, Harry, and those populating the pages of Marvel Comics. Realizing he didn’t have the right stuff to be a superhero himself, he concentrated on academics at Louisiana State University and The University of Southern Mississippi, where he earned his doctorate in Exercise Physiology. He went from there to his first academic post at The University of Mississippi. Others followed, as did many scientific publications and several textbooks. But the call of storytelling remained strong in him, and he answered that call with publication in 2017 of his debut novel, The Legacy. Veiled Memory and Fallen Wizard followed in 2018. The Third Factor, the sequel to Veiled Memory, came in 2020. The completion of the trilogy, The Stonehenge Chronicles (VM and TTF and the Untitled final), will be done next year. A fourth fictional world is in the children’s chapter book, The Captain of Tally Ho, which is not yet published. Sequels are planned for all his novels.

Kendall was sitting by the window at the coffee shop staring blindly out when a familiar voice said, “May I sit?”

Kendall had been deep in thought and didn’t see or hear Jack approach her. She was slipping. She knew better than to daydream or let herself mentally wander off in a public place. There was so much going on in her mind and she hated feeling like she wasn’t making progress or in control. It seemed lately everything in her life was going in circles. Nothing was making sense and Jack being here sure as hell didn’t make sense. “Jack. What are you doing on this side of town?”

“Looking for you. I’ve been worried about you and haven’t heard from you lately. I was on my way to your house but stopped here for coffee. They have my favorite.”

Kendall picked her phone up and checked it. She shook it at Jack. “Still works and you’ve never come to my house before. How often have you been in this coffee shop? What’s going on? Got work for me finally?”

“Whoa! So many questions at once. I wanted to see you for myself and I need to talk to you about your next assignment if you are ready to come back to work. First things first. What’s going on with you?”

“I’m not sure what you mean? I’ve been staying busy enjoying my time off. Reading a lot. Visiting new places. I may make visiting every coffee shop on the east coast my next venture. I’m fine, Jack.”

“You were pretty lost in thought when I walked up. I haven’t heard from you since you canceled dinner a few weeks ago.”

“Just busy with…. busy and finding new things to do.”

“Kendall, you can fool some of the people some of the time. You can never fool me. Not going to tell me about the new boyfriend?”

“How did you know about him? Seriously, are you following me or having me watched? If so, then you would know that was over as fast as it started.”

Jack didn’t miss the sadness in her eyes and thought to himself, “What do you know, Kendall Thomas has feelings after all.”

“You know I keep tabs on you, Kendall. Protecting my asset. It was a lucky guess because I don’t think we have ever gone this long without keeping in touch.”

Kendall needed to change this subject and quickly. “I’m more than ready to get back to work. What am I doing and please don’t tell me it’s another long-term assignment? You know I like the short ones or the quick in and out.”

“We have a few quick in and outs coming up. I know you prefer those.” Commitments were hard for Kendall and Jack agreed the quick assignments were better for her. Less time for her to get ideas of her own.

“Perfect. Let me hear about it.” They left the coffee shop and headed for Jack’s car.

“We need you to go to Dallas next week. There have been lots of secret meetings and our client is not liking them. He’s not a nervous guy but this has him way over the edge. We need to know where they are pulling money from and you will go in and see what you can find. This one is a little tricky. Top security. You will need to get into an office building and also a home office. You will need a partner to go in with you. No chance you want to take Tall One?”

“Is he still around? And no, I don’t want to take Tall One.”

“That’s too bad. He asks about you often. Broke the poor guy’s heart. I’ll be in touch.” With that, Jack waved her out of his car. She had barely gotten out when Jack drove off.

Kendall now had more to think about. She had been mentally reviewing all that she knew about Jack, Langston Corporation, Elle, PJ Enterprise and the house on Langston Drive. She hadn’t followed Jack since the night she tailed him to the house with the dog on Langston Drive. She didn’t miss the connection between Langston Corporation and the house on Langston Drive. She figured she would lie low for a bit. May have been a smart decision if Jack were having her watched. She had to ask herself, would Jack have her under surveillance? Something more to consider.

Her computer had been connected to the disposable phone when Jack joined her at the table. She didn’t make a quick move to put it away as that would have drawn more attention to it. She was sure that Jack noticed it as he was very well trained. She was also sure that he wouldn’t say anything to her but he would be checking things out with regards to it. He wouldn’t find anything. Then again….

Kendall doubted Jack got lucky with a reference to the boyfriend. She was actually thinking about him in between thoughts of Jack and his companies. If Jack had been watching her, he would know that the boyfriend hasn’t been around for a few weeks, much to her dismay.
