Synopsis

A decade has passed since Lucas Connolly lost his best friend—and the only man he’s ever loved—in World War I, but he still can’t shake his guilt over Jamie’s death. In fact, ever since losing Jamie, Lucas has heard his friend’s voice inside his head—confused about what happened to him, begging him for help. And now, suddenly, it’s not just Jamie’s voice anymore; now, a specter who looks and acts exactly like Jamie did before his death, and who is demanding answers from Lucas about what happened to him, has begun to haunt him.

Concerned about Lucas’s deteriorating mental state, his friend Angela encourages him to move on with his life, and even sets him up with a coworker whom she suspects is also gay. But Lucas is too consumed with the secret he still keeps about the part he played in Jamie’s death to even begin to form a healthy connection with someone new—and as Jamie’s ghost begins to recover his memories and get closer to the truth, Lucas’s obsession only deepens.

Ultimately, Lucas realizes that his only path forward is to first go backward—that only in examining his troubled youth, facing his deepest self, and shining a light on the shadowed parts of his past will he finally be able to set his old friend, and himself, free.

With his other hand, Lucas slowly pulled out his revolver and pointed it at Jamie’s heart. “I love you, Jamie. I love you.” Lucas squeezed the trigger and kept his hand as steady as he could as Jamie’s blood sprayed all over his face. There was a moment of confusion or betrayal that crossed over Jamie’s features, his smile still playing on his lips, his eyes trying to register what had just happened. “Lucas…?”

The steady thrum of his heart slowed quite suddenly, his hand went slack, and the life drained from his eyes. All around them, the war seemed to go quiet.

“Jamie?” Lucas whispered, his voice wavering, his head shaking with disbelief… the gravity of his action began to sink in. What had he done? What had he done!?

“Jamie!!”

He shook his body, Jamie’s blood still hot and slick on his hand. His blond head flopped over to the side, his mouth ajar. Jamie’s beautiful eyes were still open, and Lucas let him drop to the soft wet ground, unable to support his weight any longer.

Jamie’s body squelched in the mud, and Lucas fell to his knees and screamed.

Meow. My name is Mouser. Actually, it’s not. Humans do not possess the wisdom to know better, so they call me that. I am Winston Marshall, the Third, and that is my name, in full. If it brings them pleasure, who am I to interfere and stand in their way? They provide me with food and buy me toys, so I’m willing to indulge them. You could possibly be interested in learning where I live. It is a place within another place. What do I mean by that? Allow me to elaborate on the matter.

First, I “live” or exist in the writer’s imagination, Vikki Walton. But primarily, you’ll find me on the pages of her cozy mystery series. In the first book, Chicken Culprit, I was rescued from a shelter by Kandi. She then introduced me to Anne. I was still a kitten then, but I already knew that there were some occupants in that house that shouldn’t be there. I took care of them swiftly, so that’s how I acquired my name. I have taken the steps to ensure that no mouse would be brave enough to even think about entering my house.

So, Anne grew to enjoy having me around. She is in her forties, however; it is tricky to determine how many years that is in cat years. Ever since she set foot in the town of Carolan Springs, she has been involved in one mysterious situation after another. I often figure them out before she does, but I like the way her mind works. Whenever she’s focused on another mystery, it’s pretty obvious that she’ll pull out the post-it notes. Then she and start jotting down things about means, motive, and opportunity.

Now here comes the exciting part. One particular holiday season, Anne was feeling downcast. She experiences days where her mood is not the best. This is something I have observed in some humans. But she’s better now that she’s drinking some herbal tea her friend gives her. I could tell from her expression that she was bored. She finally brought down some boxes that were red and green. Now, when she opened them, I was powerless to resist the temptation. Those Christmas items were so pretty. There was all this shiny stuff and glass balls to bat at with my paw. What’s a cat to do? If you don’t want me messing with it, don’t put it out for me to play with. But get this, I helped solve a mystery! Yes, me. Winston Marshall the Third. So that was fun. If you want to know more about that mystery, you can check out Christmas Capers. I even got my picture on the book cover! It was about time.

Lately, I’ve noticed that man hanging around more. I think his name is Carson. He seems okay, but when he built me a ledge where I can watch the birds, I decided he could stay. Sometimes at night, I’ll see animals skulking along the tree line of the backyard. It’s at those times that I wish I had more access to the outdoors. Or a friend. But then that would mean sharing. Not sure about that. We’ll see what happens in Fungi Foul Play. I can tell that there’s another mystery scheduled as Anne’s back in sleuthing mode.

Now another thing you might want to know is, does the author have a cat? Sadly, the answer is no. She has a sweet dog, but that doesn’t count in my book. They don’t care when their humans give them silly names and they can’t wait for them to come home. The name Mouser at least has some street creed. But Vikki loves animals. Some years back, she decided to become a global house and pet sitter. Thus far, she has sat across the United States, in the United Kingdom, and in Mexico. Things got a bit crazy for a while, so that put off her travels, but she’s back at them again. She has sat for birds, cats, dogs, and fish. She hasn’t sat with horses or goats, but she’s helped with them as well. That’s one reason you’ll often find animals in her books. Each of us has our own personality as well. In her Backyard Farming series, she’s got me, and some chickens, but those are silly birds. In my humble opinion. There are also some other critters, but, well, let’s be honest. I’m the most important. In her Taylor Texas mystery series, she’s got dogs but mainly lots of horses. And in her Viviane’s adventures, that character is also a global house-sitter, so you’ll find all kinds of animals.

I think that’s enough for now. I hear some birds chirping outside and I need to go check on them. I can’t wait to see what’s going to happen in Fungi Foul Play. Maybe I’ll get to help solve another mystery again.

I pointed to a narrow path veering off from the main one. “Do you mind if we turn there?”

“No, though that track extends for a mile at most.”

“That is acceptable.” Once assured of our privacy, I situated Elizabeth upon a fallen log, knelt before her upon one knee, and took her hands. The allure of her amber-flecked irises halted me mid-breath, but I pushed forwards. “My bright and beautiful Elizabeth, you are the only lady I could ever marry. My heart is yours, and I cannot conceive of a future without you. Will you do me the honour of agreeing to be my wife?”

Moisture glistened within her fine eyes. “I thank you for your offer, and I am happy to accept it.”

With my pulse surging, I stood and helped her to her feet. I removed my handkerchief and dabbed at the tears staining her cheeks. Mere inches separated us, and she had never tempted me more. “May I kiss you?”

Elizabeth peeked at me through her eyelashes. “Yes.” She stretched a bit taller, and in doing so, claimed a bigger piece of my heart.

I held her shoulders and met her full lips in an ethereal touch. She rested her hands upon my chest. Before I could lose myself in her enticing softness, I pulled away to peruse her sweet smile. Her eyes remained closed. Our second kiss lasted quite a while longer. She moaned, inflaming me, yet I managed to wrest myself away. Her eyelids fluttered open, and her slightly swollen lips curved up. I sighed. “My love for you continues to soar to new heights. I do not believe it can be contained.”

“I never dreamt mere kisses could be so…powerful.” Her weight shifted from one foot to the other. “My legs feel odd—rather like jelly.”

I gripped her upper arms. “You should sit down again.”

She shook her head. “Let us walk instead. If I feel the need, I shall lean upon you.”

“I am at your service.” I wrapped her arm round mine, and we set off.

“My lips still tingle.” Elizabeth ran a forefinger over her pink flesh. “Do yours as well?”

“Yes.”

“I am glad.”

I pulled my gaze from her alluring smile lest the temptation to capture her mouth again prove too strong.

The remainder of my time with her passed in a fuddled state. On several occasions, I fought the niggling concern that I had been caught inside a blissful daydream disguised as reality.

Later, on the ride home with Bingley, one realisation hampered my elation: Elizabeth had never said she loved me.

The more I pondered the issue, the stronger my yearning became to hear those words from her. But in time I adopted a more reasoned perspective. While my love for Elizabeth had taken root within me so long ago that my life before meeting her seemed distant and insignificant, her affection for me had developed more recently. No doubt she could not yet identify the sentiment as love. But she would love me—she must.

The bloody suitcase’s gimpy wheel broke off and the whole thing listed to one side. With a tiny scream of frustration, Vaani righted the now muddy suitcase and straightened. She took a deep breath as she stared at the house in front of her.

Her childhood home. The home she’d grown up in, the one where she’d learned to walk, to talk, to do pretty much everything including curling her eyelashes. It looked the same, exactly the same. A bougainvillea plant bloomed along the circumference of the compound wall, the pop of colour painfully bright in her current mood of gloom and doom.

The roof tiles seemed to have been recently replaced, she thought absently as her gaze took in the brick red tiles that gave a cottagey kind of look to the otherwise cream coloured bungalow.

She stood there, her useless suitcase by her side and stared at her past. Memories of banging doors and screaming ‘I’ll never set foot in this house again’ rose up in front of her practically taking on corporeal form.

“I hate you all,” she whispered the words she’d screamed years before. It was the last thing she’d shouted at her family before she’d stormed out of the house, dragging this same suitcase with her. She’d been so sure, so confident, so stupid…

A loud car horn had her startling and her suitcase fell over again. The lid flew open from impact and the overstuffed suitcase disgorged its contents. Vaani stared in dismay as her clothes littered the driveway of her parents otherwise neat-as-a-pin compound.

It was only as her gaze tracked her hot pink bra did she realise that it was draped over a perfectly polished black shoe. The car honking at her! Oh no, her bra was dangling off her father or brother’s shoe. Kill her now. A strike of lightning maybe? But nope, the clear blue skies meant that wasn’t an option.

Slowly, ever so slowly, she looked up at the man standing in front of her. Not her father or brother. Her heart soared in relief at the realisation before sinking like a stone at the sight of his forbidding expression. Angry glower, clenched jaw, nasty scar, and dramatic frown. Yes, whoever this was, he wasn’t impressed by Vaani. All six feet plus of taut muscles and frozen disapproval. Which was a new experience for her. Vaani usually had men falling at her feet in a haze of lust, not tapping an angry foot draped in a hot pink bra at her.

“Who the hell are you and what do you think you are doing here?” the man bit out.

“Who the hell are you?” Vaani tossed back, genuinely bewildered. Had her parents sold the house or something? Even if they had, Rahul Anna would have told her. He was the only family member who still kept in touch with her. Despite being in the Navy and off on a ship most of the time. Which said a lot for her estrangement from the rest of her family.

But that wasn’t a problem for now. Her problem for now looked to be the mountain of muscles who didn’t seem to realise he was wearing her bra on his foot.

“Aditya Khamankar,” he said grimly like that was supposed to mean something to her.

“Okay then Mr. Khamankar,” Vaani replied crouching and grabbing an armful of distressed jeans. “Don’t just stand there. Help me clear up the mess you made.”

“I made??”

“Yes, you!” She stuffed clothes back in her suitcase haphazardly. She would figure out how to fit everything later. “You honked at me and broke my suitcase.”

“I honked at you because you were standing in the middle of the driveway and staring into space. But how exactly do you manage to blame me for your suitcase disaster?”

She noticed he hadn’t moved an inch as she scrambled around on the ground collecting her fashion debris.

“May I have my bra please?” she asked politely, pointing at his shoe and hoping to shame him into being a gentleman.

He glanced down at his shoe, one eyebrow slowly rising at the sight of her bra still elegantly draped over its tip.

“Stop gaping and give it to me,” she ordered, losing patience with the whole drama. She had to still deal with family drama once she entered the house. She wasn’t interested in driveway drama with random strangers.

“You look familiar,” he said slowly, as he removed the bra from his shoe and held it out to her.

Oh God. Here they went again. Honestly, Vaani was so tired of the fans and their constant requests for selfies and autographs.

“Look, now is not the time, okay?” She made a vague shooing motion with her hand. “I’ll pose for a selfie some other day. Right now, I am here for quality time with my family and don’t want to be disturbed.”

Now, both his eyebrows shot up. She reached for the bra, but he tightened his grip on it and she found herself engaged in a weird tug of war with Muscle Man for her own underwear.

“You’re Shravan Uncle’s daughter.”

Yuck. He knew her father. If that didn’t put him on her shitlist, she didn’t know what would. She pulled at her bra again, but, again, he didn’t let go. He just kept staring at her with that frown on his stupid face.

Okay. It wasn’t a stupid face. It was actually a nice face. All manly and craggy and, she was pretty certain, it was a hundred percent natural. She was sure this man had never injected his face with anything or had any other work done on it. If he had, he would have first fixed that nasty scar on the right side of his face. It extended from his temple to halfway down his cheek, jagged and slightly raised.

She wondered how he’d got it. Maybe he’d held someone else’s lingerie hostage and she’d been attached enough to it to attack him with a knife. Vaani didn’t care quite that much about hers. But, it was the principle of the thing. It was her bra after all.

“Look.” She flashed her trademark pouty smile. “I realise keeping a celebrity’s personal stuff as a souvenir is a thing and I’m sure you’d love to keep this bra for, you know, private bedroom stuff, but-“

He dropped it like it had turned into a live flame in his hand. And then, to add insult to injury, he rubbed his hand on his pant like he was trying to rid himself of the feel of her bra.

Annoyed, Vaani opened her mouth to say something biting and sarcastic, she didn’t know what, but she knew she would think of something good. And then she heard his voice.

“Vaani?”

Of course, he would be the one to find her like this.

Two years ago, when he’d told her she brought nothing but shame and embarrassment to the family and the family name, she’d stormed out of the house vowing to never return until she proved him wrong.

And here she was, standing in his driveway, with a broken suitcase, nothing to her name but the clothes stuffed into it, and a pink bra in her hand in lieu of the white flag of surrender she should actually be waving.

She took a deep breath, squared her shoulders and turned to face the man who’d sired her and deserted her.

“Hi Appa. I’m home.”

Excerpt

“You come into my kingdom, into my castle, and now you command me to hand over my city?” The King chuckled. “You must be mad!” The King slapped his knee, still bellowing with laughter. He raised his eyes back to Velarus. “But if that is the game you wish to play…” Flames drifted from the King’s crystals, swirling around his hands as he wove them together. “Well, we have a special place in the dungeons for your kind.” The fires licked the King’s fingertips. “I will not give up my armies. And I certainly will not surrender my country to you.” The King guided his hands through careful, well-practiced motions, and Velarus soon found himself surrounded by brilliant tendrils of flame. “Besides, even if you were a Blood Sorcerer–as you claim to be–my answer would be the same.” Swaths of golden flames surrounded the King, giving him an almost divine aura. “I have always thought the powers of your kind were a bit… exaggerated.”

Velarus smiled, subtly bleeding his Crystals. This would be a display that the King would not soon forget.

“Exaggerated?” Velarus snorted. “Well, we’ll see about that.”

The King lunged.

Velarus closed his eyes, diving into the depths of his soul. His power awaited him, begging to be unleashed. Velarus grabbed hold of it, and then the blood came.

The King’s flames vanished as the room exploded with black-red energy.

Torrents of blood flooded the chamber, scattering the contents of the throne room. Darkness surged within the air, warping the blood and causing it to levitate. The terrible power thrived, rivers of blood and darkness ravaging the chamber.

Velarus knocked the guards to the ground with nothing more than a thought. The hell-storm raged, knocking down braziers, tearing apart the soft carpet, and wreaking havoc on even the pillars themselves. Dark energy smashed into the walls, causing the whole palace to quiver.

The cyclone of blood magic quickened, growing stronger with each passing second. Velarus smiled. With a wave of his hand, the frenzy of horror receded slightly before him, leaving in its place a single person…

The King writhed on the marble floor before Velarus, his vermillion robes flapping in the raging storm of blood magic. Velarus approached him, forcing the King to his knees with a twist of his finger.

“You are nothing,” Velarus whispered, his face mere inches from the King’s. “You will always be nothing. You cannot even imagine the power my people hold.”

“Please.” The King wept, trembling beneath the spikes of pain Velarus pulsed through his body. “Why are you doing this?”

Velarus paused. “Auris is in danger, and it seems I am the only one who can save it. You and your people have made it clear that you only respond to force,” he breathed. “We are your last hope. Even your most powerful Summoners don’t stand a chance in the face of the Resurgence.” Velarus released him. The cascades of blood and darkness vanished in an instant, fading into nothing.

The King fell to the floor. He was mostly unharmed—as were the guards—but Velarus had no doubts that this would be a day they would never forget.

“You have six weeks,” Velarus said. “Surrender the city by then… or suffer the consequences.”

The King offered no response.

Velarus turned, gliding toward the doors through which he had entered. As Velarus passed through the entrance, the only sound in the enormous chamber was the gentle crackling of the flames, a reminder to the King that, even surrounded by the very element which he controlled, he was powerless.

Synopsis

In one of his most accomplished, compelling novels yet, acclaimed New York Times bestseller Jeff Shaara accomplishes what only the finest historical fiction can do – he brings to life one of the most consequential figures in U.S. history – Theodore Roosevelt – peeling back the many-layered history of the man, and the country he personified.

From the mid-nineteenth century to the early twentieth century, from the waning days of the rugged frontier of a young country to the emergence of a modern, industrial nation exerting its power on the world stage, Theodore Roosevelt embodied both the myth and reality of the country he loved and led.

From his upbringing in the rarefied air of New York society of the late 19th century to his time in rough-and-tumble world of the Badlands in the Dakotas, from his rise from political obscurity to Assistant Secretary of the Navy, from national hero as the leader of the Rough Riders in the Spanish-American War to his accidental rise to the Presidency itself, Roosevelt embodied the complex, often contradictory, image of America itself.

In gripping prose, Shaara tells the story of the man who both defined and created the modern United States.

CHAPTER 1

December 25, 1918

Sagamore Hill, New York

“The president was received by, well, some estimates say two million Frenchmen turned out, waving flags and whatnot.”

Roosevelt turned away from her, said, “My sister visits me to bolster my spirits, and this is what she brings. On Christmas Day yet. Woodrow Wilson is a hero for the ages, while I lie here as a lump of bacon fat.”

“Dear Teedie, I only tell you what you will read in the papers. And you will read them, despite Christmas, or whatever affliction you have today. I have never known you to ignore any news that might annoy you.”

He turned to Corinne, saw a smile. “Fine. My sister insults me. But I cannot scold you. You’re one of my caretakers, after all.”

He flexed his aching fingers, the pain a sudden shock. He looked at the splint around his hand. “When did this happen?”

Edith was there now, a hand on Corinne’s shoulder. “Last night. The doctor said the splint would help keep your hand and wrist immobile. You complained woefully about the pain in your fingers.” She paused, said softly, “You don’t recall?”

“Of course I recall. I’m no invalid, you know.”

The word hung between them, and he knew his protest had been overblown.

“No, of course you’re not. We’re just pampering you until you’re completely not an invalid. What should we call you in the meantime?”

“Bull Moose will do.”

His sister laughed, but Edith kept a frown.

“They’re still pushing you to come back, you know. More letters this morning. Bull Moose indeed. They want you to run. I do wish you would tell them once and for all to leave you alone. This is not the time for such foolishness. I’m not certain that agreeing to this writer’s request for an interview is a good idea at all. You need your rest.”

He didn’t want this, not now.

“My precious Edie, the 1912 election was my final hurrah, or perhaps my final whimpering farewell. Regardless how many love the term Bull Moose, I do not. I’m not going to run for anything, not president, not local constable.” He paused, fought for a breath. “But it is flattering, yes? They still love me. I rather enjoy holding on to that. If Mr. Hagedorn wishes to write about me yet again, dig into all my wonderful accomplishments, should I complain? I think not. The public does adore me, after all.”

Corinne laughed.

“I see that your gift for sarcasm hasn’t been damaged.” She looked up at Edith. “He’s right, though. Is there harm? They want him to run because he’s beloved, and Mr. Hagedorn can sell books about Teedie because people want to read them. There is no harm, Edie.”

Edith lowered her head.

“Of course. It’s hard to argue against any of that. We’ve all seen the crowds.” Edith clapped her hands, bringing him to attention. “All right, that’s it for politics. You want to wind yourself up, wait for Mr. Hagedorn. This young man has been begging to see you again since you’ve been home. But be prepared for him to press you, and hard. I’m only concerned for my husband. The doctor will be here in about an hour, and I don’t want you holding back anything. Not now. Please, Teddy.”

He looked at them both, saw soft fear, drew more pain from their concern than from the ridiculous agony in his hand. He flexed his fingers again, habit, flinched again from the sharp pains.

“I hurt. But it is not necessary for you both to mother-hen me like this. I am no child.” He paused. “Well, usually. But right now, I just hurt. And I think I’ve got a fever again. You’re a little blurry too. Or perhaps that’s just me.”

Edith bent low, a hand on his forehead. She said nothing, but he knew the look.

“Fever it is, then. My wife can hide nothing from me. I suppose you should hurry that doctor along if you can.”

He rolled slightly away, stared at the brightness of the window, too bright, closed his eyes.

Corinne said, “I’ll leave now, Edie. Maybe he can get some rest. Call me if you need me.”

She was gone in a rustle of her dress, and Edith sat now, her hand on his arm. He wanted to turn, facing her, but there was no strength, no energy at all. He tried to open his eyes, the sun blinding him again, the weight of his fever swirling through his head.

“Thank you, Edie. I’ll sleep now. My hand hurts.”

* * *

HE HEARD A familiar sound outside the window.

“That singing. It’s a cardinal, a male.” He paused, his mind drifting, the sound of the bird filling him with the kind of joy he had always felt when hearing such a variety of songs, identifying every kind of bird, a talent that even master naturalists had found astonishing.

“God, I remember it all. My father did that, opened a marvelous door to everything about nature. Egypt, the entire family absorbing so much, but none enjoyed that trip as much as I did. If I could, I would return right now.”

The images were in his mind, Egypt and the great river, so many birds, the excitement of the hunting excursions, trophies he never could have imagined. Close by, the cardinal serenaded him again, brought him home. He fought through the blurriness, tried to see Edith.

Excerpt

It’s 5:55 p.m.

I’m losing it. God, I’m losing it.

“F* it! I mean they didn’t even wait a few days, even a few hours, to tell me that my presentation sucks. They spit it out right in the middle of it.” I whine vehemently as I say this. I simply do not have the capacity to calm down right this minute because the stakes are too high.

The demand letter from the bank is like a ticking time bomb inside the purse that hangs tauntingly under the bar, proving me powerless. “We demand that you send us the four months of missed mortgage payments within thirty days or you will need to vacate the property fifteen days after the grace period indicated above.” My heart tightens. I have $427 to my name and maxed out credit cards that are all in default. My beat-up car, parked somewhere in Jersey City, looks like my next housing option if I don’t get this all figured out. Homelessness is real, and it can happen to anyone. I’m on the brink of it.

Synopsis

An undercover FBI agent and an independent coffee shop owner must team up when a local barista is found dead and danger circles their coastal Texas town in this new romantic thriller from New York Times bestselling author Laura Griffin.

With two brothers on the police force, Leyla Breda is well aware of the rising crime in her small beach town, but she never expected it to show up on her doorstep. When Leyla finds one of her employees murdered in the alley behind her coffee shop, she’s deeply shaken, and as a new law enforcement officer in town begins to circle her place of business, her instincts only sharpen.

Sean Moran is on an undercover mission: The seaside community of Lost Beach may look like a picturesque postcard, but his team suspects it’s a point of intersection for several crime syndicates that the FBI has been investigating for years. Even so, when the brash and beautiful Leyla Breda starts bossing him around, he’s immediately intrigued. He knows her brothers want him to back off, but every time he sees her, he feels more of a spark.

Leyla’s connections in the local community and Sean’s skills allow them to go deeper into the case together than they would be able to go alone. But when a single crime spirals into something much darker, Sean’s carefully planned mission takes a deadly turn.

Sean Moran slipped away from the party. The bride and groom had left under a shower of rice, but people were still milling around beneath swags of white lights, drinking the couple’s booze and enjoying the breeze off the water. Sean would have liked another drink, but he needed to get back to his condo. As he crossed the wooden bridge spanning the sand dunes, he spied a woman on the beach with a champagne flute in hand.

Leyla Breda.

Her formfitting dress looked silver in the moonlight, and it shimmered against her body as she strolled toward the surf. Nearing a piece of driftwood, she dropped her shoes to the sand and sat down. She nestled the flute at her feet, then lifted her arms and twisted her dark hair into a knot at the top of her head.

Sean stopped at the end of the bridge. He had about a hundred things left to do tonight, including contacting his boss.

Instead, he walked over to Leyla.

“How’s the champagne?”

She jumped and turned around. Recognition flickered across her face, and her shoulders relaxed.

“It’s good.” She held up her glass. “You didn’t have any?”

“Nope. Can I get you a refill?”

She smiled. “What, are you a waiter now, too?”

He stepped closer. “I’m Sean Moran, by the way.” He held out his hand. “We never actually met.”

“Leyla Breda.” Her handshake was brisk and businesslike, but the warm look in her eyes gave him hope.

“Joel’s little sister,” he said.

“That’s me.”

He turned toward the water so he wouldn’t be tempted to stare down the front of her dress.

“I didn’t get a chance to thank you earlier,” she said. “Things got really hectic.”

“Looked like you had your hands full.”

“So, are you here for Joel or Miranda?”

He looked at her. “Joel.”

She tipped her head to the side as she gazed up at him. “And you know him from . . . ?”

“Work.”

She frowned. “Here?”

“No. We go way back. We were in the same academy class in Houston, spent some time at HPD together.”

“Oh. That was a while ago.”

“Yeah.”

“So . . . the vice squad, then?”

“Yeah. Mind if I sit down?”

“Not at all.”

Sean lowered himself onto the other end of the sandy log. He didn’t like the direction the conversation had taken so he steered it back to her.

“So, how long have you been a caterer?” he asked.

“Hmm . . . let’s see. I guess it’s been about three weeks now.” She turned and smiled at him, and he felt a hot jolt of attraction. “Why? Can you tell?”

“Not at all.”

“Right.”

“Well, the timing seemed a little bumpy.”

“Just a little.” She rolled her eyes. “We had several staffers no-show. It happens a lot in this business. People are flaky. Despite all my planning, you could say we were a bit rushed.”

Rushed was right. No woman had ever clapped at him before. He’d discovered it was a turn-on.
