After four years with her boyfriend, Cadie McCaffrey is thinking of ending things. Convinced Will doesn’t love her in the “forever” way she loves him, Cadie believes it’s time for her to let him go before life passes her by. When a misunderstanding leads to a mistake, leaving her hurt, disappointed, and full of regret, she finally sends him packing.

But for Will, the end of their relationship is only the beginning of his quest to figure out how to be the man Cadie wanted him to be. With the dubious guidance of his former pro-athlete work friends and tactics drawn from Cadie’s favorite romantic comedies, Will attempts to win her back. It’s a foolproof plan. What could possibly go wrong?

Bethany Turner takes us on an emotional ride through Cadie and Will’s dating life.  They met on Cadie’s 30th birthday, and as Cadie called it, it was the perfect “meet-cute” moment.  It is what Cadie has been waiting for all her life.  What she fails to realize is that life is not a romance movie or book…well maybe she does since she accepts the fact that “Cary Grant does not exist in my Millennial world”.

The book fluctuates between past and present and I really liked the different chapter titles.  Chapter 1 is Four Years later.  To the Day.,  Chapter 2 is About Twenty-five minutes earlier.,  Chapter 3 – A Day or Two later. Three at the Most.  and so forth.  The fluctuations give us a peek into Will and Cadie’s dating life over the last four years – their expectations, adventures, and desires.  We also see the issues that neither seems to be able to verbalize and I think that is the crux of their issues – lack of communication.  It isn’t as if they don’t communicate, but they don’t talk about the important things like where they see their relationship heading, what they want out of life, and their faith and beliefs.  Cadie is strong in her faith and beliefs, whereas with Will, we know he has beliefs but not sure exactly what they are or to what extent his faith extends.

Fast forward four years later (from the prologue to chapter 1) and it is Cadie’s birthday and their dating anniversary…remember, they met on her birthday.  Anyhow, Will has an opportunity to springboard his career at work and this is the culmination of their conversation issues.  The story really starts at this point and with unplanned sex.  Nothing could ever go wrong there, right?  Cadie and Will had agreed that they were waiting until marriage and considering that Cadie’s parents are church/faith leaders this puts a lot of pressure on her…basically like good ol’ Catholic guilt.  Both Cadie and Will have a lot to learn from this experience and it takes some frank conversations with her parents and with each other before there can be any hope for them.

Will and Cadie have a great support system and it is ultimately what helps them through this crisis, along with some honest and frank conversations.  There is a lot of humor that made me chuckle in various situations and then there are moments where I am holding my breath that all will work out for these two.  One of the lines that I felt summed up the situation for Cadie was “it’s simply a matter of you deciding whether or not you want to spend your life with this man – and what it might take to do that.”  After all that she had learned by this point was she willing to do what it takes?  And was Will willing to do what it takes?

Overall a very enjoyable book.  For a Christian romance, I was surprised that the faith portion was fairly light.  There was a lot of focus on the one instance of sex (that is behind closed doors) and after a while, it started to overshadow what I think was the heart of the issue – communication.

We give it 4 paws up and look forward to what this author has in store next for us.

After tragedy upends her world, Jeannette Mason retreats to the tiny Oregon seaside town of Hope Harbor to create a new life. Vowing to avoid emotional attachments, she focuses on running her lavender farm and tea-room—until a new neighbor with a destructive dog and a forlorn little girl invades her turf. But she needn’t worry. Dr. Logan West is too busy coping with an unexpected family, a radical lifestyle change, and an unruly pup to have any interest in his aloof and disagreeable neighbor.

Yet when both Jeanette and Logan find themselves pulled into the life of a tattered Christian family fleeing persecution in war-torn Syria, might they discover that love sometimes comes calling when it’s least expected?

Bestselling and award-winning author Irene Hannon invites readers back to the charming seaside town of Hope Harbor, where they are sure to find peace, healing, and a second chance at happiness.

Click to Read Chapter One

This book is perfect reading when you want something somewhat light, inspirational, and characters that will endear themselves to you.

Jeannette is running from tragic memories.  No one could blame her but God has other plans for her in this world and I enjoyed reading how he spoke to her and gently nudged her to get involved in the community despite her desires to stay on her farm and keep to herself as much as possible.  Logan has been thrown into a situation he never expected to find himself, caretaker to his niece who has lost both her father and her grandmother at a young age.  A Syrian refugee family ends up in town where they know no one, much less speak the language.  Yet these characters are bound to each other in their faith and hope for a better life and their lives intertwine in such a way that each character comes out stronger in the end from the trials and tribulations they experience.

This story filled my heart.  I felt a range of emotions throughout the story and found myself pulled into this small Oregon town wanting to be a part of the community where everyone seemed to care for each other.  I found myself chuckling at Charley, the fish taco truck proprietor, and his seagull friends, Floyd and Gladys, but at the same admiring Charley’s words of wisdom.  I felt for Molly having to adjust to life with her Uncle Logan and coming to terms with the loss of her father and grandmother.  I can’t imagine how hard it is for young children to lose someone they love.  It is hard enough as an adult but you expect it to happen one day. The Syrian family had their struggles and watching them adapt to their new home and deal with their own grief reflects how no one is exempt from experiencing tragedy.

Some of my favorite quotes

“God’s timing isn’t always ours. Sometimes he opens doors we aren’t certain we’re ready to walk through. And it’s fine to be cautious. Not every door that beckons is divinely inspired. But at some point we do have to make a decision – because most don’t stay open forever.”

This line resonated with me because it is very true.  Either you trust that a higher power is looking out for you or you end up full of indecision and in a chaotic world of your own making.

“I can’t change the past, but I have hopes for the future. That’s the beauty of tomorrow – it offers you the possibility of a better day.”

No one can promise us anything in this world, it is up to us to make our way and make it a success and a better place when we leave.

“But people – and animals – die.”

“A very real part of the human condition, no question about it. Nothing on this earth lasts forever. Lives are filled with endings – and beginnings. No matter how hard we try to maintain the status quo, the world changes around us…and changes our world in the process.”

You have to go with the ebb and flow of life around you because as much as things change they stay the same.

While some of this story may have been predictable, it was the right book at the right time for this reader. We give this book 5 paws up.

Each book can be read on its own but if you start at the beginning you can follow a few characters when they pop up in future books and know more about their history/back story.

Irene Hannon is the bestselling author of more than fifty novels, including One Perfect Spring, Hope Harbor, Sea Rose Lane, Sandpiper Cove, and Pelican Point, as well as Dangerous Illusions and the Private Justice and Men of Valor suspense series. Review

This book is filled with mystery, suspense, supernatural, and plot jumps that will keep you on your toes (or the edge of your seat).

This story spans about 20-25 years and follows three children – a boy and two girls, and what they experience because they are different. These three children are almost immortal. Their bodies heal quickly and it alludes to their faith in a higher power. Their parents are scientists and while the science portion is briefly touched upon, it implies that it is a higher level of consciousness that allows the children to stand out from the crowd.

There is a struggle between good and evil and there is a lot of evil especially from a character named Simon. The author does a great job of making him unlikeable and his evil nature is portrayed well.

As the story jumps around in the timeline and between various characters, it is sometimes hard to keep track of who to root for or who we should be wary of, but that is what makes the book intriguing.

The story does just end and I wondered if I was missing pages.  However, I realized as I was reading the synopsis afterward that this is book one in a trilogy which makes a lot of sense because this book left with me with a lot of questions that were not answered especially since this book focuses primarily on one of the girls. I know there has to be more to this story and this book does leave you wanting to know more…at least it did for me!

We give this 4 paws up.

Excerpt

With a slight hesitation, Glory examined the entrance. Using the corner of her jacket she tested the knob, not overly surprised when the door opened easily. Behind her, she could still hear the muffled sounds of the girl’s sobs. Glory stepped one foot through the door and paused. She turned sideways and looked back out into the yard. With one foot inside the house and one still on the porch, she stared at the girl, whose eyes were as wide as her own. The side of her body that remained outside of the house felt light; she could feel the breeze whip her clothing. She raised her hand and, as expected, it lifted easily. Glory looked down at her other arm, the one in the corridor of the house. Sweat drizzled down her brow as she struggled to lift it.

Making sure to keep her voice light, Glory nodded in the direction of the gate. “Go home, I’ll get Mitch and he’ll call you afterwards.” She waited until the girl nodded reluctantly and disappeared.

Feeling a strong urge to leave, Glory turned as quickly as she could and closed the door behind her. Instant darkness. She pulled out the cell phone Dr. Stephens had helped her purchase shortly after she left the hospital, and turned its flashlight on. She had not paid the bill in a long time, so she had no service, but Glory still kept it charged. The corridor was short, maybe two or three large steps long. A staircase, which dominated the space in the narrow corridor, stood against the left wall. Glory shined the light up the steps trying to determine where they led, but the light’s range was too short.

Examining the staircase carefully to make sure it could hold her weight, Glory began ascending. The house had its own gravity; every step felt like moving through quicksand. By the time she made it to the top, she was winded. She leaned against the wall, shining her light around the area while she rested. She stood in another corridor, much larger than the first one. A solid wall lined one side; several doors, some of them mere centimeters apart, lined the other. She pushed herself away from the wall and walked to the first door, covered her hand with her jacket, turned the knob, and pushed the door. It gave way only slightly before it refused to open any farther. She tried pulling the door, but it could only be opened inward. She pushed one more time, shining a light through the narrow opening to see if she could locate the blockage—silently hoping it wasn’t the boy—but nothing met the light. Frustrated, she moved on to the next door, only to encounter the same problem.

By the sixth one, Glory started to wonder if any of them were meant to open. With each door, she put more strength and effort into her shoulders and arms, desperately trying to force her way through. By the twelfth, she was exhausted. She took a deep breath and shoved her shoulder against it. The door swung open, Glory stumbled two feet, and fell through the hole behind it. She fell through one story of the house into an open room and into the much bigger hole in that room’s floor. She fell through another story and into another room with another hole. She hit hard rock and slid until she landed on her back. Her head hit the floor and her eyes instantly clouded from the impact.

Glory’s breath and sight came back simultaneously. Slowly, she sat up with a grunt as she brought her right hand to her ribs. Not only had her pack survived the fall, but she had managed to hold on to her phone. Standing up, still favoring her left side, Glory began dusting herself off. Her hands shook and she took a deep breath to dispel the effects of the adrenaline still rushing through her body. Turning on the light so she could look around, Glory shifted her feet. Taking a small step forward, she tripped on something, but managed sustain her balance with a small hop to dislodge whatever had caught her foot.

Glory turned the light downward to look at the ground and saw a piece of cloth clinging to her boot. Ruffles—the cloth was filthy, covered in dust and grime, but the ruffles still maintained their shape. Forgetting herself, Glory reached out and ran her fingertips over the cloth, smoothing the dirt away so she could see the color. Her fingertips grew warm and her eyes widened as she realized what she had done. Too late, she snatched her hand away.

“This is so exciting!” A young woman in a blue ball gown tightened her grip on her friend’s arm, her gloved fingers long and delicate. Looking a little less interested, her friend, a tall, thin brunette, pried the girl’s hands from her arm, but her friend only returned them with slightly less bruising force.

“Yes, well, if my father knew I was here, it would be the end of me.”

“That’s what these are for, silly.” The young woman flipped her blonde hair behind her shoulders and tapped her masquerade mask with her folded fan.

“I shouldn’t have let you talk me into this. I have a bad feeling.”

“You are thinking far too much. Now tell me how beautiful I look and then let’s go get some refreshments.”

The brunette stood back and pretended to consider her friend. “You look positively stunning as always, Annabelle. Your dress is lovely; I could never pull off so many ruffles.”

Annabelle waved the last statement away. “Nonsense, Sarah, I’m sure you would look just as lovely in ruffles. I don’t know why you insist on wearing such drab garments.” She looked her friend up and down, a frown on her face as she examined the dark green dress that covered Sarah, from its unfashionably high neckline down to the slightly pointed toes of her boots.

Sarah grimaced. “My father does not agree with today’s fashions. He thinks exposing shoulders, wrists, and cleavage is unseemly.” Trying to distract her friend from her dress, she made a show of looking around. “This is an extremely odd house, isn’t it? Why would he build a staircase directly at the entrance?”

“For that matter, why build a staircase that only goes to the top floor when there are four flights in between?”

“We’ve been here less than an hour and I’m already confused. So many corridors and staircases.”

“And how many rooms are there, anyway? There are doors everywhere you look.” The girls spoke frantically now, their intertwined arms squeezing together as they became more excited.

Annabelle turned to her friend. “Let’s explore the house more.”

Sarah looked over her shoulder. “I don’t know. We haven’t even greeted the host yet. It would be bad manners.”

Annabelle shrugged. “It was bad manners for him not to show himself so he could be greeted.”

About the Author

A.L. Bryant was born and raised in St. Petersburg FL. She became interested in writing at an early age; an interest that depending on the circumstance brought punishment (detention for passing out the latest installment of her novella during class) and praise (being chosen for a youth writers conference at the Poynter Institute.)  A.L. Bryant gets her inspiration from both her mother and her Great Grandmother. Her mother recently published an inspirational children’s book under a pseudonym and her great grandmother is South Carolina’s first published African-American female author and playwright.

Until recently writing had simply been a pastime for A.L. Bryant who although she attended several writing courses, graduated with a B.A. in International Business. It was shortly after her second job as a Financial Office Manager at a Goodwill correctional facility that she realized she loved writing more than anything else. It would still be some years before she would convert the short story she wrote in college into a novel.

Besides writing, A.L. Bryant loves traveling the world. God has blessed her with the opportunity to visit a total of seven countries. She has studied abroad in Seoul and has traveled throughout Kenya; two locations she researched for her Blessed series. Her dream is to visit every country in the world.

Her latest book is the supernatural Christian thriller horror novel, Blessed: The Prodigal Daughter.

CHAPTER ONE of WAIT FOR ME

by Susan May Warren

He wasn’t looking for trouble, but if Pete didn’t act right now, at least one person was going to die.

And more than anything, SAR incident commander Pete Brooks was sick of failing, of seeing lives destroyed. Especially on his watch.

“You should wait.” His co-rescuer, Aimee, grabbed the back of his shirt, as if to keep him from sliding down the slope into the churning black floodwaters of the Meramec River. The 218- mile river had overflowed its banks two days ago under a torrent of rain caused by the tail end of a Cat 4 hurricane that ravaged the Gulf Coast, then traveled northward. All six Ozark highland counties, nearly three thousand square miles, sat under grimy waters, and the rain continued to fall.

Pete and his disaster team had spent the past twenty-four hours hauling people off roofs, pulling them from debris, and searching for the unaccounted for.

Now, heading back to their hotel in their SUV, they’d come upon a washed-out bridge. And in the frothing waters, a caravan, drowning fast in the swift current.

Please, let there not be a family inside.

“We don’t have time. We need to move, now.” The SUV headlights scraped over the bridge, most of which was submerged, having taken a hit after an old railroad bridge from upstream slammed into the girders.

Pete had watched it happen, wanted to scream at the caravan edging its way over the swollen waters. He’d pumped his brakes, slammed the SUV into park, and was halfway out when the bridge collapsed.

“You can’t go in there alone,” Aimee said, scrambling up the bank after him.

“I’m not an idiot,” Pete snapped, and instantly regretted it. It wasn’t Aimee’s fault he’d had barely four hours of sleep in the past day and a half. Everyone on his team was functioning on raw, serrated nerves, their veins pumping more coffee than blood. “Sorry.” He turned to Jamie Walsh, who was climbing out of the SUV. “Walsh—throw me that rope and tie it off.”

The recruit, ex-navy, all muscle and get-’er-done, pulled the coil of line from the back end and secured it to the jack. He tossed the rest of the coil, plus a harness, to Pete.

Pete pulled the harness on, one eye on the gray caravan as Aimee shined the Maglite on his movements.

“Don’t lose them!” he said to Aimee. He could buckle on his gear in his sleep, for Pete’s sake.

She directed the light across the frothy waters.

He clipped on the carabiner, buckled on a helmet, and grabbed the life jacket Walsh handed him. “Give me two more.”

Walsh loaded him up, and Pete also grabbed another harness.

The roar of the river drowned the thunder of his pulse.

Maybe he should wait. Going in the water was always the last choice. The waters frothed, choked with debris and who knew what lethal underwater booby traps.

But now the caravan lay on its side, half-submerged, trapped fifty feet downstream against a cement pylon that could give way at any moment.

“Turn the truck and keep the lights on the river,” he said to Aimee, then glanced at Walsh.

Good man. He’d anchored himself in with webbing to a nearby tree and would belay Pete into the wash.

Don’t let go. He wanted to say it, but it sounded, well, weak.

Afraid. As if he expected disaster.

Although, with his recent run of luck . . .

Instead, “Call for backup,” he said to Aimee, because, well, he wasn’t an idiot. His simple plan in this torrent was to get whoever was trapped in the car out and wait for help.

The night sky was dark as ink, the drizzle insidious as it soaked his shirt, his canvas pants, and sent a shiver down his back.

He waded into the wash. The current nearly swept his feet out from under him.

He should wait. He nearly turned back, except for the voice lifting from the vehicle, haunting across the waters.

“Help!” A man had crawled out of the van and was waving his arms, screaming, the words eaten by the violence of the storm.

Pete still made out the word child. Went cold.

“Stay put! I’m coming for you!”

This ninety-two-page gift book is a compilation of devotions, poems, prayers, and lists of things to be grateful for. The difference between having what you want and having what you need is a principle some people never grasp. In the reading of this book, you may realize you have much more to be grateful for than you were aware of.  Use this little book as a daily devotional or pick it up at random times to remind yourself that you are a blessed individual.

Praise

“This little gem of a book arrived before we left on vacation, so I took it along. It became our shared devotional and ‘thought for the day’ outlook…and colored our time away with gratitude. This unique discovery is one to treasure.” – 5 Star Review, Amazon verified purchase

This book may not be very long in length but it imparts a lot of wisdom in its 92 pages.  There are some short stories from the author’s life, bible verses, prayers, and reflections.  While you could read this book in one sitting, I found myself spreading it out over a week so I could mull over each nugget and think about how I could apply it to my life or just meditated on the words I read.  This was a nice way to end my day but it could easily be a way to start your day.

As I read the introduction, I felt like she was peeking into my life as I too grew up in a large family and while we may not have been rich by today’s standards, we had everything we could ever want and lacked for nothing.  We had love to spare and we still maintain a tight bond today.  If only more families were like this I think the world might be a better place.

I think one of my favorite inspirational quotes was one by Dietrich Bonhoeffer: “In ordinary life, we hardly realize that we receive a great deal more than we give, and that is only with gratitude that life becomes rich.”

We give this book 5 paws up and suggest picking one up for everyone in your circle for the holidays!

Book Title: Sitting at the Kitchen Table with God by Sandi Smith
Category: Adult Fiction, 192 pages
Genre: Literary Fiction, Christian Fiction
Publisher: Mindstir Media
Release date: May 10, 2017

Synopsis

MARIANNE HAD PLENTY OF TIME ON HER HANDS TO DO NOTHING, so she decided to clean the placemats that she had collected over the past fifty years. Fifty years of a wonderful life together with her husband and best friend, Andrew. Fifty years that should have turned into sixty, but would not even turn into fifty-one.

Her wonderful Andrew was dead. Andrew…her friend and caretaker of her soul and mind and being. Loneliness, darkness, and guilt extended their hungry fingers out for Marianne, desperately trying to pull her even further into their world…a world with no escape. How could she live without her Andrew? She had been so sure that she would be the first one to die in this relationship. But now there was a stronger component to her loneliness and darkness that was starting to make its presence known to Marianne. Anger.

Anger had been a companion of Marianne’s for a very long time, but usually, she had the ability to quiet its demand to be set free. This time, though, Marianne was not sure she would be able to control this anger. It was different somehow…stronger. She was afraid and weak. She had lost her faith in God, and she was so angry with Andrew for leaving her behind. Leaving her all alone in this dark, insane world. A world that was in such a hurry to go nowhere. A world that was in such a hurry to destroy everything in its path. Marianne was in its path, but this time she was alone. Sitting at the kitchen table, Marianne closed her eyes, and then she prayed that today, she would die.

Welcome to Trevelyan Castle, home of the poorest heiress in Victorian England

Tressa Harlowe’s father kept his vast fortune hidden somewhere on his estate in the south of England and died suddenly, without telling anyone where he had concealed it. Now Tressa and her ailing mother are left with a mansion and an immense vineyard and no money to run it.

It doesn’t take long for a bevy of opportunists to flock to the estate under the guise of offering condolences. Tressa knows what they’re really up to. She’ll have to work with the rough and rusticated vineyard manager to keep the laborers content without pay and discover the key to finding her father’s fortune—before someone else finds it first.

“Everyone loves a treasure hunt—pair it with a heroine you can’t help but love, a hero you can’t help but swoon over, and a family mystery that’ll keep you on the edge of your seat, and you end up with A Rumored Fortune. This book is a treasure in itself and one you won’t be able to put down!” — Roseanna M. White, bestselling author of the Ladies of the Manor series and Shadows Over England series

“Politano combines romance and mystery with great skill to create plot twists that will keep readers captivated until the very end.”— Publishers Weekly

“The author has done a great job, offering up a plot filled with wit, charm, action, and a lot of female strength.”— Suspense Magazine

A treasure hunt, faith, and a historical setting round out why you should read this book.

This was my first book to read by this author and I enjoyed the setting, the characters, the storyline, and the romance. Tressa is the protagonist and she has a lot to deal with in this story. Her father is presumed dead, her mother is self absorbed, she has to figure out how to pay everyone without any money, has to search for her father’s fortune which no one knows where it is, and she has to figure out what she wants in her life and in love. Despite all that is on her shoulders, she is very down to earth, has a friendship with her lady’s maid, and befriends many of the workers and their families. She has compassion for all. I also loved the descriptions of her artwork on the walls and ceilings of the estate, I can only imagine her designs and the feelings it evoked.

Donegan Vance has several secrets he is keeping from Tressa and at the same time wonders if she is capable of taking care of business. He is like most men of this time period and thinks that women can’t lead or be in charge. I appreciated the fact that despite his faults (and who doesn’t have faults) that he recognizes the good in others and is able to fall back on his faith in God to get him through the tough times. He too has a strong sense of family which I think is one thing that he clings to in Tressa.

There is a little bit of a mystery, where is the family fortune? And as with many families, the vultures come out to try and find and claim the fortune before Tressa. It is sad when the motives of family members are not in the best interest of everyone. Despite Neville and Ellen’s behavior (these are some of the family vultures), they have reasons of their own for wanting the fortune which is revealed near the end. I would like to have seen more focus on the treasure hunt because that was somewhat light in the story.

The ending does leave me hanging a bit wondering what might have happened next for Tressa, Donegan, and the rest of the family/estate. Still an enjoyable story.

We give it 4 paws up.

The Theory of Happily Ever After

According to Dr. Maggie Maguire, happiness is serious—serious science, that is. But science can’t always account for life’s anomalies, like why her fiancé dumped her for a silk-scarf acrobat and how the breakup sent Maggie spiraling into an extended ice cream–fueled chick flick binge.

Concerned that she might never pull herself out of this nosedive, Maggie’s friends book her as a speaker on a “New Year, New You” cruise in the Gulf of Mexico. Maggie wonders if she’s qualified to teach others about happiness when she can’t muster up any for herself. But when a handsome stranger on board insists that smart women can’t ever be happy, Maggie sets out to prove him wrong. Along the way she may discover that happiness has far less to do with the head than with the heart.

Filled with unforgettable characters, snappy dialogue, and touching romance, The Theory of Happily Ever After shows that the search for happiness may be futile—because sometimes happiness is already out there searching for you.

“. . .the sweet will-they-or-won’t-they of Sam and Maggie’s courtship will please readers. . .”   –Publishers Weekly

“Billerbeck returns with a light Christian chick-lit novel just in time for the summer beach-read season, taking on stereotypes of femininity, intellect, and worth within an exciting cruise-ship setting with plenty of sunshine and gelato.”  –Booklist

“Billerbeck’s latest is full of memorable characters and witty dialogue. . . .The overall story reminds the reader that sometimes happiness will find you, no matter what you may do to avoid it.”  –RT Book Reviews Four Star Review

What in life makes you happy? There are many possibilities but only you can know what works for you.

Maggie is having a hard time figuring out what makes her happy and if you look deeper into her history/childhood you will understand why she has such issues. I’m amazed she is as stable as she is considering she lost a sister and her parents’ personalities appeared to have done a 180 when they lost their other daughter. While it is understandable, I can’t imagine growing up in that sort of family. Maggie’s behavior/thoughts are hard to take because she is one hot mess, but when you realize that this story takes place over a week,it is a little easier to understand and accept because you can’t have a complete turn around in just a few days, or at least not the kind that Maggie needs especially after wallowing for two months in her apartment with the Hallmark Channel and gelato!

Maggie’s two best friends, Haley and Kathleen, are interesting characters and add a dynamic to this story. Haley does become unlikable later in the book all because of a man. I had a hard time with Haley’s attitude and was surprised that Maggie tolerated it at all. I appreciated some of Maggie’s observations about Haley, that perhaps she was spoiled because no one ever told her no because it helped make sense of Haley’s actions and comments. Kathleen is a hoot and apparently an adrenaline junkie. I admired that spunk and she rounded out the trio of friends nicely.

The story would not be complete without a couple of hunky men. Brent the bartender from Texas teaching a mixology class on the cruise, and Sam, the man that doesn’t think intelligent women can be happy. Let’s just say that statement doesn’t bode well for his happiness. But there is more to his story and he is immediately taken with Maggie. Because of his misstep at the beginning of the cruise and Maggie’s insecurities, it takes quite some time before they are on the same page. But the road to that place was interesting between Maggie’s desire to prove him wrong (she is a scientist after all) and Sam’s desire to get on her good side. I wasn’t sure whether I should root for Brent or Sam to end up with Maggie. Brent was great for the impulsive and daring side that I think Maggie wanted to have, but Sam was more grounded and has similar beliefs to Maggie.

There is a little bit of suspense too when it comes to the ex-fiance, Jake, and some of his actions back home. The one conversation that happens between Jake and Maggie explains a lot of Maggie’s insecurities. There are some twists regarding Jake but you’ll have to read the book to find out those details.

Overall this story has some laugh out loud moments, along with some thoughtful lines that gave me additional insight into all of the characters.

We give this 4 paws up!

“In her promising first novel, Fordham assembles an endearing cast of characters in the rugged Midwest plains for a tale about surviving and thriving. . . .Fordham depicts heartbreaking emotional and physical suffering, while beautifully illustrating the power in simple acts of kindness to foster healing, hope, and happiness.”—Booklist

“A deftly crafted and compellingly entertaining historical romance that is all the more impressive when considering that it is author Rachel Fordham’s debut as a novelist, “Hope of Azure Springs” is certain to be an immediate and enduringly popular addition to community library collections.”—Midwest Book Reviews

“This delightful book about the resilience of the human spirit and the power of love will keep you turning pages until the very end.”—Jennifer Beckstrand, author of A Courtship on Huckleberry Hill

“A tender story about loss, life, and the beauty that lies within each of us.”—Stacy HenrieUSA Today bestselling author and RITA award finalist

True love always wins, but sometimes you have to search for love because it can be elusive.

Life seems somewhat simpler back in the 1800’s, but then I think I would miss some of the conveniences like air conditioning! There would still be the different personalities of people that you would see today – those that are self absorbed, those that are obsessed with money and wealth, those that are kind and help everyone, and those that just want to be happy.

Em and Caleb both fall into the last two categories – they are kind and help those around them and just want to be happy. They may not know what it will take to make them happy but they keep searching. My heart went out to Em after hearing about the orphan train and losing her sister Lucy at a previous town. And then to learn what Em went through by the person that took her at the last town, she lived in squalor and food was scarce, it was heart breaking but not unexpected all things considered.

Caleb had his own share of sadness by losing his brothers to war. That was just as hard on him as it was his parents and you wonder if it affected them equally or if it hit one person harder than the other. There are some wonderful scenes when Caleb visits his parents with Em. I think once the visit was complete everyone had a better understand of what the other felt and that no one person’s grief was greater than another.

The story is sweetly woven and the interactions between Em and the various characters showed her grit and graciousness. The romance that evolves from Em and Caleb started in friendship which is the best place to start. There is even a lesson taught to Eliza by Caleb which is a lesson many could stand to learn in this world about being humble.

There are wonderful supporting characters such as Milly and Mae, twins that can’t get enough of princess stories. Margaret is unique but much loved by the people in the town despite her eccentricities.

The epilogue will have you a bit misty too.

We give it 4 paws up.

PROLOGUE

Iowa, 1881

She dead?”

Em heard a man’s voice from somewhere above her. A strange thumping pulsed through her with each word he spoke. Her throat burned, screaming for water, but she could not cry out.

“There’s life in her. Not much of it though,” a second, raspier voice answered. She felt a hand press against her throat and then move over her body, gently probing. “She’s bleeding pretty bad.”

“Gunshot?” the first voice asked.

If only her eyes would open, and she could see them. Straining, she struggled to pull her heavy eyelids open. Finally, bits of light darted in front of her eyes, but she could not focus. The faces above her were fuzzy and indiscernible.

Fear swept through her, suddenly waking her battered body. Afraid the men from before had returned, she opened her eyes wide, finding strength that only moments before she had lacked. With thrashing arms, she flailed at the men. Her arms flopped about but offered little defense—she was too weak from blood loss. And then they moved no longer, subdued by large, strong hands.

“Easy, girl. We aren’t going to hurt you. We just want to help. Take you into town, that’s all. There’s a good doctor there.” The man’s deep voice sounded gentle, but still she did not trust him. Voices could be deceiving. Arms could hurt as well as help. She knew these things well.

Soon she felt her body being raised above the ground, and moments later the hard planks of a wagon became the resting place for her injured frame. Too weak to move, she lay looking at the sky, wishing there were a way to end the agony, but knowing that for Lucy she would fight on.

Once the wagon lurched forward, she lost track of everything again. The wheels bouncing over ruts made her pain so intense that everything closed around her and then faded to black.

Rachel Fordham started writing when her children began begging her for stories at night. She’d pull a book from the shelf, but they’d insist she make one up. She hasn’t stopped since. She lives with her husband and children on an island in the state of Washington.
