“Every tree, plant, flower and herb has an essence. A spirit. A life force.” She gestured to the verdant forest all around.

Issylte raised her eyes to the lush canopy of trees overhead, the blue sky peeking through the fluffy clouds. She inhaled deeply, the green notes of pine mingling with the rich scent of earth and the tangy fragrance of blossoms in the early summer breeze.

“The essence of the forest can be beneficial. Benevolent. Essential for healing.” She picked up a sprig of red clover and handed it to Issylte with a knowing smile. “Yet others are harmful and deadly.” Maiwenn gestured to the alluring deep purple flowers before them.

Issylte’s breath caught in wonder. She sensed an aura. A tingle in her veins.

Maiwenn’s chestnut eyes bore deeply into hers. “Have you ever felt the thrum of the forest in your veins?”

Issylte nodded, her eyes wide with discovery and delight. She held Maiwenn’s gaze, nearly breathless with anticipation.

“That, Églantine, is power.” Maiwenn’s eyes were deep brown, like the nourishing earth of the Hazelwood Forest.

“You, my dear princess, are a forest fairy. Like me.”

With a quick intake of breath, Issylte placed her hands over her mouth in wonder.

“The Goddess has blessed us both with a divine gift. The ability to sense the essence of a plant. To wield its power. The warm, soothing aura of a beneficial herb. The icy sting of a poison.”

About the Author

Enthralled with legends of medieval knights and ladies, dark fairy tales and fantasies about Druids, wizards and magic, Jennifer Ivy Walker always dreamed of becoming a writer. She fell in love with French in junior high school, continuing her study of the language throughout college, eventually becoming a high school teacher and college professor of French.

As a high school teacher, she took her students every year to the annual French competition, where they performed a play she had written, “Yseult la Belle et Tristan la Bête”–an imaginative blend of the medieval French legend of “Tristan et Yseult” and the fairy tale “Beauty and the Beast”, enhanced with fantasy elements of a Celtic fairy and a wicked witch.

Her debut novel, “The Wild Rose and the Sea Raven”–the first of a trilogy– is a blend of her love for medieval legends, the romantic French language, and paranormal fantasy. It is a retelling of the medieval French romance of “Tristan et Yseult”, interwoven with Arthurian myth, dark fairy tales from the enchanted Forest of Brocéliande, and otherworldly elements such as Avalonian Elves, Druids, forest fairies and magic.

Synopsis

Kraken monsters come from the sea. Don’t they?

Devora Kraken seems to have everything under control and all she could ask for. Like the neighbourhood tunnels, where she can hang out with monsters and mermaids both. If sometimes it’s not clear which is which, that’s only normal—right? Anyway, Devi has plenty else to keep her busy, including a good cop, bad cop set of family members. And if all of that isn’t enough, there’s even a cute girl at the new school across town trying to get Devi’s attention!

From the deep waters of the past, something wakes up and marches through Mainland. One terrible night, blood is spilt, and gangs gather in the woods. Devi’s cousin, Jon, leaves for the speak-and-listen trials, and nothing will be the same again.

Devi sets off on a journey of discovery that will take her from her home in Exer City across Mainland and into Craw. It won’t be easy—her brother Korl refuses to talk about the past, or why Jon left. He won’t speak of the gun under the bed or the pile of mermaid figurines. Korl refuses to talk about anything!

What’s a monster anyway? Who better than Devora Kraken to find out?

This is the diary of how a shield spends its days. To be honest, I hate writing, and I’d never keep a dumb diary except if dying of boredom. Yeah. I’m dying of boredom. There’s nothing to do except write, draw, and turn into turnips. We used to be kids, and now we’re shields. That’s about it. Uncle says we don’t have names because shields are all the same (which is stupid). Except Jon, who gets the name of Shield One because he’s oldest.

I’m fifteen. Jon’s sixteen, and my little sister, Devi, is just three. Devi Bumble Bee because she likes buzzing around everywhere like this: bzzz.

I’ll never get used to thinking of myself as a shield. How could I? Does anyone? Lead can’t speak, but when I said so to Ma, she said I should be quiet. I swore under my breath, so it doesn’t count. Sorry, Ma. Anyway, my shield isn’t made of lead but some kind of cheap plastic. It’s useless, but what can I do? As a joke, I told Jon we could defend Craw by reflecting the sun off the plastic into the enemy’s eyes. He didn’t laugh.

I like saying the rhyme. It’s the only part about war that’s good. When we do it together, I feel brave and good. Important.

It’s been weeks since we left home. Shields live in the Gatehouse now, with the merfolk gatekeeper. Devi has always loved the silly old stone lady, but I’m not so sure I do. To me, she’s moody and angry. I never thought we’d end up living here. When Ma first brought us, Jon was shocked.

Uncle, Ma, and Da. Oops, I mean, the boats go out every morning and come back at night. They lock us in with a big key attached to Uncle’s belt. When I asked why, he said it’s for safety. How is being locked inside a stone hall safe? Some nights, not all the boats come back. Nobody mentions it. I told the little kids they were still out at sea. In a way, I guess it’s true.

We’ve been here fifty days. It seems like fifty years. I’m bored out of my skull, but I’m doing okay. Shield One gets to go outside with the boats. I want to go, too, once I’m trained properly. Shield One has started showing me how to be a shield. I can’t believe he’s a better aim than me, not with hands which won’t stay still.

What else? My little sister doesn’t talk much now. Just sits with the stone mermaid by the door.

I’m a bit worried today. I don’t want to talk about it. Being made of metal and steel like we are, shields don’t have worries. It doesn’t stop me from worrying. When the boats got ready to leave today, Shield One cried and refused to go outside. I was embarrassed for him! I wouldn’t have cried.

Uncle was pissed, so I asked if Jon could stay and teach us to use our shields. When Uncle left, my cousin was so relieved he cried again.

“Halt the tide! What are they even doing out there? Why don’t they come back? Jon?” I know he doesn’t have any answers. I want to hear his voice.

“Who?”

“Ma and Da.”

“Shh! The boats, remember. We don’t say Ma and Da. No names anymore.”

“Why? It’s turnip. Of course we’ve got names.”

I want to wind him up, like before we turned into shields. When we had sun and rain instead of dark windows, and when we could spend all day arguing and messing about.

“Because we’re symbols,” Jon says. “A shield is the Mainland symbol for strength. That’s us! Parents are boats which will carry us to shore.”

“Turnip, like I said. I don’t want to be a symbol.”

He sniffs and might be crying again. Now I feel bad. I still can’t believe Auntie got shot by a sniper. I keep expecting to wake up back in my bed and Ma saying “time for school.”

“Sorry, Jon,” I say. “The boats. Where are they?”

“Don’t say ‘Jon,’” Jon says.

And that’s how it is. It’s ages since Uncle left. I’m cold. I wish I could see what’s going on outside, if the big light of victory has come, the shining light to take us to the land of our fore-parents (whatever it means).

One day, we just said let’s do it! (the beginning)

How does one become a writer? In our case, it was a hangover combined with laziness and a lack of the book we would like to read. When we, or precisely I (Olga), woke up in NewYears’ day 2022 with a raging hangover, I wished for nothing more but a glass of water, peace and quiet, and a book I could immerse myself into. Unfortunately, the more I searched Amazon, the less I liked what I could find there. The books I would happily read, I already read. From the rest, I had a choice between erotica focusing on nothing much but friction moves every three pages or young adults/coming-of-age romance.

At one point, I said to myself, enough is enough. If I can’t find the book I like, I will write one.

I consulted with Mark, and initially, we wanted to do something similar to the roleplay style. You put yourself into your character’s shoes and just write what you think they are saying and doing. Still, after 2 chapters (and you can feel where in the books), we abandon the idea and focus more on me writing the story and Mark editing it and implementing a more masculine male POV of our male heroes and side characters. From this point, it worked really well, although Mark kept complaining about the speed of my writing and how I cracked the proverbial whip over his head, forcing him to work the second job as an editor. Still, we completed the first draft in less than 3 months and sent it to beta readers, which came with very positive and helpful reflections.

We had the ball rolling from this point, and now I’m writing our third book in the series. Mark is editing the second and the first … Well, that’s why I’m here.

About the Authors

Olena Nikitin is our pen name. We are an enthusiastic couple of writers who are fascinated by the fantasy/paranormal romance genre. We love humour and a down-to-earth approach to life, and all of this hit a bit of steam and spice you can find in our books Hidden behind the pen name:

Olga – is Polish, armed with a wicked sense of humour and typical Slavic pessimism she is the wicked witch from the East. She has written stories since childhood, initially mostly about her work. As an emergency physician, she always has a story to tell and often not much time to write. She is also known as The Crazy Cat Lady.

Mark is a typical English gentleman whose charm, refined taste and undeniable sex appeal tempted Olga to fly across the sea. Don’t tease him too much; this man has an impressive sword collection and he knows how to use it. He also can fix everything, including Polish syntax in English writing. He got shot in the Gulf War, and if you give him good whiskey, he will tell you this story.

Guest Review by Nora

“Discovery of the Five Senses” is a captivating story from start to finish. Five boys go into the nature preserve in their town, only to discover strange balls of light floating in the air. After the balls of light begin to fly at the boys and explode, they soon blackout and find themselves waking up at one of their houses the next morning with no memory of getting there. But why are they all in so much pain? And why do they seem to each have one sense that has been sharpened to super-powered levels?

This is the question of ‘Discovery of the Five Senses.’ What were those balls of light, and why do they seem to have given the boys one super ability each? Although the teenagers are initially somewhat afraid of their new gifts, they soon have a need to use them, as a young man named Druth from the next town over wishes to use his own gifts to attack their town—and to steal their powers for his own. The boys are helped by a mysterious dark stranger, who seems to have some connection to a time when another group of teenagers received the same gift from the preserve. No wonder their parents warned them to never go into the nature preserve!

I really enjoyed how Smith used the different perspectives to tell this story. Between the five teenagers, Druth, and the dark stranger, the story really benefited from getting to experience everyone’s viewpoint.

This was a riveting YA thriller that kept my pulse pounding for the entire wild ride. I was so concerned for the boys and the residents of Danville Heights that I couldn’t put this book down! Make sure you set aside a block of time to read this, and get ready to add it to your list of favorite books! Five stars for this mesmerizing novel!

What a delightful story for readers of all ages, especially middle-grade-aged children. This book/series would be perfect for my great-niece, 7, who loves to read.

I read the fourth book in the series, Stranger in the Mushroom Patch, but I feel that it can be read on its own without having read the first three. There are a few things that might be easier to understand sooner, but the author does a wonderful job of sharing bits and pieces from previous books so that we understand the different fairies better like Boris and a never-ending supply of moss bombs.

The story centers around a small group of fairies in training: Lilly, Boris, Jack, Rosie, Ivy, and Pearle. This group of fairies is lively and mischievous which would be expected from someone so young. But that doesn’t stop them from having fun and learning all at the same time. From a previous book, Boris won the right to have a continuous supply of moss bombs that are slimy and smelly and just what you would expect a boy fairy to enjoy. But he isn’t the only one that likes them, all of the fairies young and old enjoy a good moss bomb fight and a battle is declared which expands the young fairies’ knowledge and experience when they meet a human child. With the help of their elders, this group of fairies helps the human child back to her parents without revealing themselves to the parents or ending up clutched in the toddler’s hands.

This lighthearted story has a few lessons within the pages for young readers to grasp from compassion for those less fortunate to friendship with each other. The story is well written and would be easy for a younger reader to understand the words within. I can only imagine the adventures that this gang of fairies experienced in the first three books and will continue to explore in future books, including perhaps a fairy ball? It is how this book ends with discussions about it and let’s just say that Boris and Jack are not looking forward to wearing formalwear or learning how to dance.

I really liked Pearle. She doesn’t fly but has a chariot and I believe that this represents someone with challenges, but she meets them head-on. There is a game they play with her that has her spinning her chariot like a merry-go-round until they all fly off and green to the gills. I chuckled at this game because it is something I would have done when I was much younger.

This series will be perfect for any young reader and we give it 5 paws up.

Synopsis

It is the duty of the Vanguard to protect the world from unseen demonic forces.

But what if the organization falls to corruption? Their reformation is up to Cato, a disgraced former member who discovers many of the elite using their powerful positions and martial skills for ill-gotten gains rather than fulfilling their true purpose: aiding mankind in a secret war against their eternal foe.

Aldous is a Vanguard who fell from grace after being stricken with vampirism by a mysterious figure known as the White Lady. His increasingly vile appetites are tolerated because his knowledge as an alchemist is vital in the Vanguard’s battle against the demons. When those desires lead to the abduction of the woman Cato loves, Cato wages a one-man war against Aldous and his werewolf henchman.

“While This World of Love and Strife will reach horror audiences, it also should be included in fantasy and thriller library collections as a strong example of the strengths that can emerge from a story that embraces different genres with powerful characters and scenarios that are unpredictable and engrossing.- D. Donovan, Midwest Book Review

“The thrills build and build and never let up. The characters feel like real people. Even the vampires and werewolf! Best of all was the protagonist. He starts as kind of an eccentric and a bit of a jerk, but by the end I couldn’t get enough of him. I highly recommend this book for people who don’t mind horror with a heaping dose of action.”- John Martin, Amazon

Guest Review by Nora

This book really intrigued me and kept me guessing! ‘This World of Love and Strife,’ by Shawn Mackey is a one-of-a-kind novel that takes all of the best elements of horror and combines them with a thriller.

The fictional world of Lumina City is such a powerful and vivid atmosphere that, as I was reading, I kept forgetting that it wasn’t a real place—despite the fact that it’s full of demons, vampires and werewolves, of course.

What a world that Mackey has created, and what an interesting plot to set these characters into! The story centers around Cato, a former member of an organization responsible for expelling demons. The organization is called the Vangaurd, and they have members in high political positions all over the world. The Vangaurd’s job is to stop demons from getting into people’s head and controlling their thoughts.

Cato left the organization after a civil war split them apart, and went into hiding, but he still has a bounty on his head from the Vangaurd. Which makes things difficult, because Cato has just received a vision from a disembodied voice that convinced him that humanity is in grave danger.

Further complicating things is the fact that the woman that Cato loves has recently been captured by a vampire. The vampire is another former Vanguard member named Aldous whom Cato has a personal vendetta against.

This book is a wild ride and one that has to be read to be believed. Mackey’s writing is superb and his grasp of plotting is everything a reader could want in a horror novel.

The different character perspectives kept the story fresh and provided a lot of insight into the story that might have otherwise been lost with something so ambitious. This is an incredible five star book in what might seem like an unassuming package. Don’t miss this one!

Excerpt

Maggie went inside, suppressing the urge to run up the stairs, her limbs jittering in anxiety. She stopped at the top floor, bracing for something terrible. Nancy was dead, and if her intuition proved true, Cato wouldn’t survive the night. She continued down the hall, dreading each step. At Cato’s door, she was about to knock, then reached for the knob instead. It was locked.

“Cato,” she said quietly, rapping her knuckles against the door. “It’s me, Maggie. Can you open up?”

After waiting a few minutes, she called his cell phone to see if he was actually home. From the other side of the door, she heard it vibrate against the hardwood floor.

“Hello?” he answered, so low she could only hear him over the phone.

“Open the door, Cato. I’m outside.”

Within a minute, he unlocked the door. Maggie waited for him to open up. A few seconds later, she heard a loud thump, prompting her to barrel inside the room. Cato lay in a heap, pale and trembling. She closed the door, locking it behind her, and then ran to his side.

“What happened?” she asked, feeling his forehead. It was cold.

“I saw it,” he mumbled. She grabbed him by the face and got in close.

“Open your eyes. Look at me!”

“Maggie?” he said, blinking heavily. He shot upward with a gag. She helped him to the toilet, where he continued to wretch, but didn’t vomit.

“Tell me what happened. What did you see? Was it Nancy?”

“Everyone,” he said. When he didn’t elaborate, she shook him.

“Come on, damn it!”

“You have no idea how dire things are. We’re all fucked.”

“Cato,” she screamed, shaking him harder. She slapped him lightly across the cheek. “Snap out of it.”

“How can I begin to explain it to you? You wouldn’t even believe me.”

“Say it in your own words. I’ll figure the rest out.”

“You were a nurse, right?” he asked with a grunt, leaning against the bathroom wall. She noticed a gash on his forehead.

“Almost. A nurse’s aide,” she said, looking through his medicine cabinet. It was filled with empty bottles of unlabeled pills. She tossed them one by one into the garbage, searching for disinfectant.

“You understand how prevalent bacteria are.”

“You certainly don’t. I found bandages. Got rubbing alcohol?”

“Not anymore.”

“Then this will have to do,” she said, sticking a bandage on his wounded head after a light wash with soap and water. It wasn’t very deep. “What about bacteria?”

“Evil seeps into this world as pervasively as bacteria. Like diseases, it takes on forms—”

“What are you babbling about?”

“I thought you wanted to listen?” he snapped. She lapsed into silence, and he continued: “As nurse, you’ve got plenty of protocols to adhere in order to prevent bacterial infections. The same goes for evil, only the procedures are much more difficult. It takes more than surgical gloves and disinfectant to stop Nergal. Plentiful food won’t save you from Pazuzu and frugality isn’t enough to fend off Mammon. These demons, billions of them, maybe trillions, are more pervasive than bacteria. Their influence can’t be understated. They squash human will to such a degree, I doubt we’re any more than golems for these creatures. I can’t even trust my own thoughts.”

“These creatures,” Maggie said, feigning calm. She was aghast by the nonsense he spewed, but the concern for him trumped it enough to humor him. “You call them creatures. Can you see them?”

“They manifest all over the world. I’ve killed some before. So has Reggie, unless he lied.”

“Reggie never told me about this.”

“He hasn’t seen what I’ve seen.”

“Explain.”

“I saw Hell,” he said, then after a long pause: “Human souls cling to the bottom like dead insects, and the ones with the courage to escape are battered down by a legion of demons. It’s going on right now and will continue for all eternity. I’ll never know a moment of peace ever again.”

“It sounds horrible. Do you remember what happened before this?”

“No.”

“I saw an ambulance and police cars at Nancy’s apartment. Do you know anything about it?”

“No.”

“Are you sure?”

“The only thing I’m sure of is what I saw, and what I’m going to do from here on. There’s a spiritual sickness that needs curing. I won’t let my soul stay bound. I’m going to destroy Hell.”

“That’s a—” she started, but didn’t know how to finish. Cato closed his eyes and rested his head against the wall. “Cato, are you okay?”

“No.”

“What can I do for you?”

“Save yourself. Don’t trust me to do it for you.”

“How?”

“To start, stop viewing things through the eyes of the world. Someone told me that a long time ago, and I didn’t listen. I’ll never do that again.”

“Who?” she asked. He covered his face with his hands and let out a groan. There was a sad tinge to it. Maggie considered probing further, but it was best not to agitate him. Nothing good ever came from questioning Cato’s past. She crawled forward and caressed his head. “Let’s go to sleep.”

“That’s a good idea,” Cato said, standing. He nearly stumbled into Maggie. She helped support him to his bed, tucking the blanket in and pulling it over him, then laying by his side.

“Will you tell me about Nancy in the morning?” she asked. He nestled his head on her shoulder and muttered something incoherent. Rather than ask him to clarify, Maggie closed her eyes. She was exhausted, and rather than linger in this maddening night, closed her eyes and quickly fell asleep.

Review

This was a delightful short story to read. The story follows Luce and her retelling of events that happened when she was 13 to a “board” ten years later. She recounts the events that led to the fall of her town of Craw and how her family banded together to extract them from the war that was happening. She also shares her insights as a teen and how the war impacted her life and what she experienced during that time. I loved that she had a puppy, Bluebell, that gave her comfort during this time. Also, her friend Adu was there which helped her cope with the situation. I loved how they took the characters from a children’s book about mermaids and used those as coping mechanisms, and to teach Bluebell different tricks.

I think many of us could relate to her experiences just from what we see happening in the world today. We may not have personal experiences that tie to Luce’s, but empathy with her plight and with those in similar situations. Luce may have been naive at 13, but then who wouldn’t have been, but it helps shape her as she grows up and shares her story ten years later.

If you want to read more about this world created by the author, then check out the first book, I Volcano.

We give this book 4 paws up.

Synopsis

A new quirky young adult horror fantasy novel from the author of James Rhyder and the Cave of Dreams.

Sixteen-year-old Chase Addams just had the worst birthday of his entire life. He was terrorized at school by a death god, spent the evening in a haunted house, and even faced off with an urban legend in the flesh. If this wasn’t enough to ruin the average person’s day, it ended with his best friend and girlfriend, Asra Saitou, being dragged off into the abyss by a mysterious arm wreathed in flames. Chase soon discovers this kidnapping is part of a hidden war between the lands of the living and the lands of the dead. What’s even worse for the self-described uncoordinated, sarcastic, smartass is everyone thinks he’s something called a guardian —one of the heroic spirits who are summoned to not only fight in the war but keep the conflict from spilling out into the different realms of existence.

Now, Chase must come to terms with what it means to be a hero, avoid the terrors prowling in the lands of the dead, maneuver the politics of an interplanar war, and of course try to find Asra. All of this before a lurking darkness consumes both worlds. However, in this cosmic conflict, nothing is quite what it seems.

Review

This book is billed as a quirky YA horror fantasy novel and I would have to agree 100%.

The town of Witchland harbors all sorts of creatures and no one seems to think twice about it until Chase’s girlfriend is kidnapped and he discovers he may be a Guardian which helps protect these creatures (or some of them anyway) and he sets off on a quest to find his girlfriend and rescue her from whoever is holding her. He runs into all sorts of creatures/beings on this journey and learns a lot about himself in the process.

I chuckled at different scenes as he is learning how to use his powers, especially his new “weapon” which is a ring. I found that the various creatures/beings that they encountered could be quite frightening or your new best friend.

This book is not short on action either and for only being 16, Chase manages to get himself out of many scrapes that could have turned out worse for him.

While billed as horror, I didn’t find it frightening (like Stephen King) but I can see how it has a horror twist to the story with the different species Chase encounters and what they might do to him.

While not my normal genre, this was a fun read and we give it 4 paws up.

Synopsis

’Dragons in the Clouds’’ is an epic adventure that takes place in the land of Albian during a time when Dragons were alive and freely roamed the land.  The people during this time were being devoured by a particularly vicious species of dragon. To protect his people, the ruling King finally orders the total annihilation of all living dragons. A powerful wizard, named Merlinus, who is a friend to the king, does not agree with the King’s order. Merlinius knows all Dragons are not what they seem. So he does what he must to protect a family of dragons that he has befriended. To protect his dragon friends, Melinus performs the spell of weightlessness and tells the dragons to fly up and to hide in the cover of the clouds.  An unforeseen ability of the dragon’s weightlessness spell is that a Dragon’s fire now looks like lightning to the people below, and their roar is like that of thunder. Melinus tells the dragons to live within the clouds and to only come down at night to eat.  Merlinius’ apprentice wants his master’s power and has grand ideas of his own. He has a plan for evil dragons that he has hidden deep within a mountain cavern. Now enters a young boy, who has befriended a very young dragon. The two suddenly find themselves caught between the King’s order and a battle that has begun between two species of dragons. A battle ensues that will determine control of the skies above the Kingdom of Albian.  As a result, Merlinius’ apprentice’s plan has consequences that may bring the Kingdom of Albion and perhaps the very world we live in today, to a devastating end.

Excerpt

Inside the laboratory, the two wizards were still battling. David was startled by a loud crashing sound made by a large cabinet that Merlinius magically sent flying toward Odious. Odious ducked and scrambled behind some knocked over tables, causing Merlinius to momentarily lose track of him.

“Where are you? You coward!!” shouted Merlinius.

Odious jumped up and threw a crystal rock at Merlinius, hitting him in the head. Merlinius screamed in pain as he fell hard to the floor. David, seeing that Merlinius had taken a severe hit, immediately went to him to help him get back on his feet. Odious ran to retrieve the mallet he had lost earlier. Seeing David helping Merlinius, Odious went after him to try to scare him off. But brave David didn’t run. Instead, he started throwing bottles at Odious. While many of the bottles hit the wall behind Odious, some hit their mark, slowing Odious down considerably.

Outside, in the sky, Zindetha was in hot pursuit of Rago and was gaining ground, getting closer and closer. Zindetha thrust his large wings harder and harder as he zeroed in on Rago. His eyes grew bigger with excitement as he was almost upon his target. 74 David Blair Rago, seemingly running out of gas, began to slow down. Zindetha could almost taste his breakfast, his mouth watering with anticipation. Suddenly, Rago veered downward toward Merlinius’ castle, tucking his wings for maximum speed. Zindetha was angered by this unexpected burst of Rago’s pure will to survive, helping him to streak downward at incredible speed.

“You can’t get away!!” Zindetha roared, as he also tucked his wings for maximum speed downward.

Once again, he started to close in on Rago, this time at a much faster rate. Rago swiftly changed direction in hopes of eluding his capture. Rago is now heading straight for the castle, while Zindetha, oblivious to his direction of flight, is focused entirely on Rago. Zindetha failed to realize that he was headed straight for the castle wall. Rago spied a small porthole, difficult to see, but possibly big enough for Rago to fit through. The smaller dragon soared in the direction of the small porthole. Zindetha, still oblivious that he was headed for the wall, followed in full pursuit of Rago. At the last minute, Rago tucked his wings as tight as he could and shot right through the castle porthole. But foolish Zindetha, like a runaway train, collided horribly into the castle wall. The crash brought boulder-sized bricks down on top of Zindetha, practically covering the large dragon. Zindetha lay immobile on the ground. Seeing Zindetha hit the wall and collapsing, the other meat-eating dragons took flight and started circling above Merlinius’ castle.

Synopsis

January Cole’s job just got a whole lot harder.

Not that running security at the Paradox was ever really easy. Nothing’s simple at a hotel where the ultra-wealthy tourists arrive costumed for a dozen different time periods, all eagerly waiting to catch their “flights” to the past.

Or where proximity to the timeport makes the clocks run backward on occasion—and, rumor has it, allows ghosts to stroll the halls.

None of that compares to the corpse in room 526. The one that seems to be both there and not there. The one that somehow only January can see.

On top of that, some very important new guests have just checked in. Because the U.S. government is about to privatize time-travel technology—and the world’s most powerful people are on hand to stake their claims.

January is sure the timing isn’t a coincidence. Neither are those “accidents” that start stalking their bidders.

There’s a reason January can glimpse what others can’t. A reason why she’s the only one who can catch a killer who’s operating invisibly and in plain sight, all at once.

But her ability is also destroying her grip on reality—and as her past, present, and future collide, she finds herself confronting not just the hotel’s dark secrets but her own.

At once a dazzlingly time-twisting murder mystery and a story about grief, memory, and what it means to—literally—come face-to-face with our ghosts, The Paradox Hotel is another unforgettable speculative thrill ride from acclaimed author Rob Hart.

Review

This book packs a lot into the pages with a diverse character group, addressing issues we see today, and even a little bit of a mystery thrown in to boot.

This book is not one that you will sail through because of the complexity of the plot and the vast amount of characters. However, it is well worth the read especially if you like science fiction and fantasy rolled into one.

January Cole is a whipsmart character that isn’t afraid to tell it like it is. Accompanied by a robot/drone that helps keep her in check, these two make the story quite fascinating. They play off of each other and the snarky comments add levity to the situations at hand. January does have an advantage, or perhaps disadvantage, as an Unstuck person. She can see snippets of things to come which aids her in doing her job and what to look for, but at the same time, it hinders her because of the prejudice from those around her.

This story delves into time travel and what it might be like to travel back in time to a historic event and watch it live. Granted, the TEA has to watch out for those that might be trying to alter history or profit for themselves. There is a scene where 3 dinosaurs are caught running around the hotel and the story of how they arrived in the present only adds to the mystery of what is going on at the hotel.

As I mentioned, the characters are diverse and range from LGBTQ+, nonbinary (which is still hard for me to get used to They/Them and not expect it to refer to a group of people vs just one), entitled wealthy individuals, and even some down to earth characters. Each adds something to the storyline even as a minor character.

The mystery comes in trying to find out who is erasing video and other data files, who might be trying to kill some of the super-wealthy, and just creating general havoc that keeps January and the rest of the staff on their toes.

I enjoyed the book and while it might not be for everyone, I think many might just enjoy this book. We give it 4 paws up.
