Synopsis

Beck O’Rourke’s younger sister Lizzie has cajoled her into taking tennis lessons in the middle of the summer in South Florida. Beck not only suffers from the heat but from her snooty classmates who are more interested in the handsome tennis pros than learning how to hit a backhand. But things get serious when one of the racquet club’s pros is killed by a hit-and-run driver. Beck takes advantage of her inside knowledge of the tennis club to try to help handsome police detective Devon Mathis catch the killer.

Review

Who killed the tennis pro and why? The answer might surprise you as it did me.

Beck is back in town and was roped into taking tennis lessons. I felt for Beck because I am a lot like her, not athletic, and definitely not interested in tennis. After one of the lessons, she meets Haley reading a book in the club, and they strike up a conversation about books. What Beck doesn’t know is that Haley is a professional tennis player. I think Beck’s ignorance about Haley helps forge a bond between the two since Haley isn’t being hounded for her status. I enjoyed watching their friendship evolve, and books are definitely at the center.

The relationship between Devon and Beck continues to evolve, and by the end, there is a better understanding between the two. There are some humorous moments that I won’t spoil for you since they might give away a little of the plot/storyline. But I appreciated that Devon recognizes Beck’s ability to uncover clues and details to help solve the case.

I enjoy the banter back and forth between Lizzie, Beck, and their grandmother. Lizzie and Beck are opposites, but that doesn’t prevent them from having a good sibling relationship. We also see these characters continue to evolve and have more layers to them.

And we can’t forget Scratchoff and his friend Shirley now working at the cafe. Scratchoff is quite the character and, despite winning a million dollars, is still the same guy he was before. He just helps more homeless people with the money.

This has been a fun series to read and book 4 is next on my list to read. We give this book 4 paws up.

Praise

I found the mystery interesting and liked the slow unraveling. It’s not that the pace or the mystery itself is slow but more that as readers we start out knowing almost nothing so there’s so much to learn and figure out. ~I Wish I Lived In a Library

As always, Ms. Hollon has written as excellent mystery. Detailed, riveting, and a hard one to guess! I was happily stumped all the way to the reveal. ~Lisa K’s Book Reviews

Author Mary Jane Clark has two mystery series that are very good!  This weeks feature is her Wedding Cake cozy series (at least I consider it more cozy than the Key News thrillers!) and the 3rd book in that series, Footprints in the Sand.  The first book is To Have and To Kill and the second is The Look of Love.

footprints

Synopsis:

It’s the dead of winter and struggling actress and wedding-cake decorator Piper Donovan is thrilled to be in warm and romantic Sarasota, Florida, enjoying the powdery white beaches, soothing seas, and golden sunsets over the Gulf of Mexico. She and her family are there to celebrate her beloved cousin’s wedding. Not only is Piper creating the sugar-sand-dollar-festooned wedding cake, she’s also the maid of honor.

But a cloud seems to be hovering over the whole affair. Shortly after a bridesmaid mysteriously disappears, a kindly neighbor’s car is run off the road and a prospective witness, an innocent Amish teenager, is threatened to keep silent. Then a body is found on the beach where the wedding will take place. With the nuptials threatened, it falls to Piper to unmask a killer. Could it be the wedding planner with something to hide? A doctor and his wife who collect unusual Japanese figurines? The best man, an ex–drug dealer with lecherous eyes and roving hands? What about her cousin’s future stepfather—or even the bridegroom himself?

As Piper gets close to figuring out who’s been covering his guilty footprints in the sand, the cunning killer has already set his sights on Piper as his next victim!

A few months ago I reviewed the first book in the Sherri Travis series called Margarita Nights by author Phyllis Smallman.  The book showed promise for a new series set in Florida so I decided to check out the next two books in the series, Sex in a Sidecar and A Brewski for the Old Man.  The following synopsis are from the author’s website.

Sex in a Sidecar

Florida has two seasons. The rainy season brings hurricanes, the dry season delivers tourists – both can be nasty.

Sherri Travis is tending bar at the Bath and Tennis Club where two women have been murdered. A rich socialite, who comes in daily for her quota of side-cars, decides to commit suicide by being the next victim, but first she has to decide who the murderer is.

Sherri pours the drinks and listens to the stories, trying to make sense of it all.

A Brewski for the Old Man

The story of the return to Jacaranda of Ray John Leenders, the man who abused Sherri when she was a child. Back in town he’s living with a woman who has a young daughter. Sherri doesn’t want to get involved; it’s none of her business – except, except – she knows the woman and her daughter and it’s impossible to stay uninvolved.

Review:

These two books were a fairly quick and easy read.  It continues the life of Sherri but since she received an insurance settlement from the death of her husband in the first book, she is able to purchase the bar she worked at, Sunset, with another investor, Clay who also happens to be her love interest.

I know that these are a cozy mysteries but sometimes I wonder how these characters get themselves into so much trouble!  Granted most of the time she isn’t looking for that trouble but manages to find her anyway.

I was surprised that despite everything that has happened in the first two books and how Sherri has managed to solve or help solve these crimes that Detective Styles always seems to think she is involved more than she really is and automatically thinks she had something to do with the death  of John Ray in the third book.  Hasn’t he learned anything yet?  Or is he just looking for an excuse to get close to Sherri?  Granted there is a lot of circumstantial evidence but we all know you can’t make assumptions.

If you enjoyed Margarita Nights you will enjoy these next two installments.  The pace is quick and the cast of characters which follows each book will keep you hopping trying to decide who can or cannot be trusted.
