Letting Go – A Real Love Story (Stand Alone)

By Ash Gray

Synopsis

Sunshine.

Warm sand.

Turquoise water.

Hot man.

Those are the ingredients for the perfect summer romance recipe, right?

Wrong when you’re me.

My love life has never been anything to rave about. I’ve been single for way longer than I’m willing to admit. Which has resulted in me becoming a hermit; and I don’t mind it one bit.

My friends and family, on the other hand, don’t like the fact that they see me so little because of the way I live my life.

One trip to the heavenly island of Gran Canaria will change my life forever. Usually, I’m not one to throw caution to the wind and let go of my inhibitions, but I did this one time. I gave my trust to someone I barely knew; and me being me, I ignored all the signs and went into this relationship – if you can call it that – heart first, and it got shattered.

If you’re nosey and want an insight of the very private life – and sometimes highly embarrassing – love life of a thirty-year-old woman, dive into this story that is mine.

***No exaggerations were used in this book, sadly for my sanity.***

Hearts and dreams evolve in the shadow of the once-magnificent Penn Station.

Vera Keller, the daughter of German immigrants in turn-of-the-century New York City, finds her life upended when the man she loves becomes engaged to another woman. But Angelo Bellavia has also inadvertently opened up Vera’s life to unexpected possibilities. Angelo’s new wife, Pearl, the wealthy daughter of a clothing manufacturer, has defied her family’s expectations by devoting herself to the suffrage movement. In Pearl, Vera finds an unexpected dear friend…and a stirring new cause of her own. But when Pearl’s selfless work pulls her farther from Angelo and their son, the life Vera craved is suddenly within her reach—if her conscience will allow her to take it.

Her choice will define not only her future but also that of her daughter, Alice.

Vera and Alice—a generation and a world apart—are bound by the same passionate drive to fulfill their dreams. As first mother and then daughter come of age in a city that is changing as rapidly as its skyline, they’ll each discover that love is the only constant.

Praise

The Way of Beauty is a thing of beauty. The writing is gorgeous, the story is engaging, the characters are amazing. The amount of research that goes into historical fiction just astounds me. Add this to your TBR!”

“If you want to be swept away by a love story set in a fascinating and meticulously researched past, Camille Di Maio is the author for you. Don’t miss this one.”

“A captivating story of love and family that spans several generations.”

“The writing transports you to the time, not so long ago when women had to choose between love and their rights. Camille Di Maio’s dialogue, descriptions, and relationships create a complete picture of the era and struggles. Great book club book.”

If you enjoy historical fiction and love old buildings/landmarks, you will want to read this book!

This story spans several generations and starts in the early 1900s and ends in the 1960s and encompasses two world wars, the women’s suffragette movement, and love. I especially enjoyed learning about Penn Station (which was torn down in the 60s) and how it impacted the lives of our characters. It was a central focus for various reasons and I think my favorite reason was for the adventure and possibilities it held since you could take a train from this building to almost anywhere.

The love story was just the right amount of happiness, sadness, and struggles to reach that point.  Vera and Angelo may eventually find true love together, but it is a path fraught with heartache and even a little misdirection before they are able to start their happily ever after.  I admired Vera for not giving up on her belief that she and Angelo were meant to be together.  Then their daughter, Alice, is torn between two men.  They both proclaim to love her, and she loves both in their own way but which one will be her true love?  Will her path mirror Vera’s?

While I didn’t make note of each one, there are many memorable lines throughout the book that will warm your heart and maybe even make you think just a little bit!  This is one quote that I enjoyed, mostly because I love books and it compares books to buildings:

“There are some things that are better as they age. Wine. Cheese. Books. Who doesn’t love the smell of an old book? That’s exactly why I love old buildings. They have history. The things they’ve seen. A new building is an empty shell. Sure, its plumbing may run smoothly, but has it ever embraced a cheering crowd or housed a dramatic performance or sponsored a ghost?”

Overall this is just a feel good, turn of the century romance that will leave you smiling.

We give this 5 paws up!

Synopsis

Amelia Moore, the founder of the Moore Detective Agency, specializes in missing persons. Her cases have taken her to some interesting places and put her in some dangerous situations, but she always solves the case. With the help of Rick Bonito, her business is flourishing. When Mrs. Brody hires Amelia and Rick to find her missing brother, they find themselves in Bali, Indonesia. They are mystified why her brother quit his job, put his home up for sale, and ran off to this mysterious and exotic island without telling a soul.

Review

What a fun new cozy series! Well sorta new, new to me I should probably say.

Amelia is a PI that has been hired to find a woman’s brother and the clues take her to Bali. She brings an associate, Rick, with her and while there has always been a spark between them, this trip brings that relationship to the forefront. It is hard to balance work and potential love but Amelia and Rick make it work and I enjoyed watching it unfold.

We don’t know much about why William has gone missing and as they travel across Indonesia to find him, much is learned about why he left in such a hurry and what he is trying to keep safe. It was fun watching the mystery unfold and there are even some humorous parts with the two men that are following them across Indonesia.

One thing I took away from this book is to create a bucket list. Rick has one and encourages Amelia to create one. I chuckled at an item on each of their lists…you’ll have to read the book to find out what exactly they had on their lists.

This was a quick read for me and I can’t wait to delve into the rest of the series. Next stop is Ireland.

We give this 5 paws up.

About the Author

I was raised on a farm surrounded by the rolling hills of southern Idaho and have made my home in southern Utah among the beautiful red mountains and desert heat. I have been happily married for 42 years and am the mother of six daughters and have five wonderful grandchildren.

After my family began to leave the nest, I decided it was time to finish what I had started long ago. I decided to go back to college and get a degree. It had been 30 years since I had been to college and it was one of the most frightening things I had ever done. I had to learn how to study and take tests all over again. The first day of college, I was a nervous wreck and wondered if I could do this, but with the support of my husband and children, I was able to graduate. I received my Bachelor of Arts Degree in Theatre and Music at Southern Utah University and received the Outstanding Non-Traditional Student Award for the College of Performing Arts in 2002. During the meantime, I cut a CD named “Romantic Love Songs of Sigmund Romberg and Victor Herbert.”

I have enjoyed writing short stories and novels for several years but it took a lot of courage to begin submitting them. After “Melinda and the Wild West” was published, I entered it in the Reader Views Literary Contest and my book was chosen as a Semi-Finalist in the “Reviewers Choice Awards 2007.” It was one of the top ten out of hundreds of other entries.

I have traveled throughout the United States, teaching people to write their family history and autobiography. I have traveled to seventeen states and given over 500 workshops. I am the author of six historical sweet romances, four mystery adventure novels, a children’s book, and a new cozy mystery series. All of my books are family friendly.

Southern Charm (Mayson-Dickson Mystery)
Cozy Mystery
3rd in Series
Self Published (February 20, 2018)
Print Length: 272 pages

Synopsis

In their latest adventure, in SOUTHERN CHARM, Emme and Jackie are enjoying, well Emme is enjoying a stroll along the Virginia Beach boardwalk when they attend the Neptune Festival and a sand art exhibit. Jackie tags along reluctantly, then a series of events, sends Emme sprawling into a sand sculpture. But it’s no ordinary sand sculpture; it’s hiding a dead body with lots of secrets.

Complicating their lives are cryptic GPS coordinates that lead them to their parent’s mysterious safe house, where they encounter protective drones. I’ll let you find out what happens next.

Mayson & Dickson, when they crossed the line, it was murder.

Guest Post

Today we welcome author Jocie McKade to StoreyBook Reviews.  I love the names of these characters!  Today she shares with us how she came up with the names and idea for this series.

The seeds for Mayson-Dickson were planted many years ago on a road trip with my mom. She made some off-handed remark about that imaginary line and how I could go from Southern Rebel to Yankee hard-ass in a split second. She was a true Southern lady, and I spent most of my childhood summers in the South.

My cozy mystery series Mayson-Dickson is truly from my heart. You see, my entire family was from the Southern USA, then I – a Yankee – came along. Fortunately, I was an adorable and loveable child so they didn’t hold that against me. LOL My family moved frequently, and I went to school above and below that Mason-Dixon line. I can go from ‘y’all’ to ‘you guys’ in the same sentence. You can say ‘cart’ or ‘buggy’, I know exactly what you mean either way. I’m as equally at home with cornbread and cat-head biscuits, as I am with chowder and sourdough. There are days when my Southern soul will erupt and I can sling that accent like a pickup can sling gravel. Other days, my inner Kate Hepburn erupts sending fear through someone who has annoyed me with just an evil-eyed Yankee glance.

Roll forward a few years, and inspiration hit, right after a large and delicious margarita. You’ll understand that if you read the books. Hubby was driving the pickup truck, and I had the radio turned all the way up, and my margarita fogged brain decided I should sing to the top of my lungs while standing up with my head out the sun-roof. My younger daughter was not only a witness but soon joined me in this concert. The older daughter sank as far down in the backseat as was humanly possible and ignored us.

Suddenly, it hit me, right after that big bug struck my cheek. Two sisters, a Yankee and a Rebel, thrown together against a common cause. That was when Emme Mayson and Jackie Dickson were born.

Jackie is Boston proud, Harvard educated, with concrete in her veins she is a pure city girl. Her nerves shatter every time Emme says, ‘ain’t’, which is often.

Emme is from Alabama, an Auburn University graduate, she loves NASCAR and the country. She wants to send Jackie back to Boston on a hunt for the lost letter ‘R’.

As you can see, they are a match made in hell. While they are only one fist throw away from killing each other, finding out the truth about their backgrounds, and their parents outweighs their baser urges.

Each book in the series can be read as a stand-alone, but to get the full background it is best to read them in order.

Synopsis

Seventeen-year-old Grace Michaels is determined to be thin, even if she dies trying.

Part of the in-crowd at Providence High, she is steps away from being asked out by the most desired guy at school, winning a prom queen nomination, and her parents’ approval. If she can just get skinny enough, be pretty enough, and popular enough.

But Grace is thin on the outside and fat on the inside. No amount of weight-loss ever seems enough. Convinced the melting pounds will solve her problems, every pound lost brings her closer to her goals. But flesh and bone can only hide the weight of her secret for so long.

Fans of the emotional and thought-provoking contemporary YA fiction, such as Before I Fall, Tell Me Three Things, and All The Bright Places will fall in love with Souder’s heart-wrenching novel, SOMETHING OF SUBSTANCE.

Review

This book takes a deep look at body image and how it affects people today, especially women. The dangers of anorexia are real but it isn’t worth your life.

Grace is a character that you will probably love and hate at the same time. While she was once “fat” (approximately 40 lbs by the text), she decided that she did not want to be overweight so she attends a “fat” camp and works at reinventing herself. However, it spins out of control as she obsesses with her weight, how many calories she is eating, and being a part of the popular crowd. She becomes the person that we all remember from high school – not quite a bully, but not nice either. I think she feels bad about how her “friends” treat those that are overweight as she was once that girl.

Grace’s family is dysfunctional too but you don’t find out some of the real reasons why until the end when her issue is discovered by her family. I do think her parents set her up to be this way because she was not a star athlete like her sister Kelly. We really don’t know a whole lot about Kelly’s life and perhaps a story from her perspective during the same time period could be interesting to see how she deals with her sister’s anorexia. We do have a little peek into her life, but not enough to really get to know her well.

Then there is her best friend Cara. I think Cara knows something is going on but perhaps is too afraid to confront Grace or even tell a parent so that this could have been addressed sooner and before it became almost fatal. But at the same time, it is hard when you are younger to betray your friend even if it is in their best interest.

Of course, since this is a high school there are boys. I am definitely Team Jake all the way. Yes, he is Cara’s younger brother (by about a year) but he had grown up and filled out and knows Grace perhaps better than she knows herself. Luca is a bit of a wild card and many times I wondered what the real story was with his interest in Grace. Was it real? Was it part of a bet or something stupid that boys sometimes participate in with each other? As that story unfolded I knew that it wasn’t going to end well.

This was a book that I loved and hated. Remember how I said you would love and hate Grace at the same time? I loved that this character brought to life an issue that we see all too often – body image and what is acceptable or not acceptable according to society and the media. At the same time, I did not like how obsessed she was with losing weight and wanting Luca. She was self-absorbed through much of the book, but then when interacting with her family I felt sorry for Grace because she wasn’t receiving attention from her parents and the focus was on her sister.

I think a great addition to the end (or in the author notes) would be signs to look for and who to tell if you suspect someone you know is going through the same situation.

We give this 4 paws up

Number of Pages: 320 pages

Scroll down for giveaway!

Pilar, an innocent young wife and mother, is abducted during a fake job interview in Mexico City and forced into sex slavery in Houston. Can she survive the horrors of a world—one which many good Americans don’t see or ignore—long enough for her brother Diego to find her?

Searching for Pilar breaks open the secretive and dangerous world of sex trafficking while exploring human nature and our connections to each another. Diego’s guilt transforms him from a rudderless youth into a man of purpose, and courage. While he searches, Pilar finds a strength that could save herself and a young girl who needs her. The themes of family, love, faith and the law intertwine in this action-packed tale of the Bayou City.

Praise

“Patricia Holmes fictionalizes the heartbreaking reality of cross-border sex trafficking in her novel, Searching for Pilar. This cautionary tale should be required reading for high school classes to foster awareness, understanding, and ultimately solutions to this horrific epidemic.” –Joanne F. Phillips, author of Revenge of the Cube Dweller.

“In Searching for Pilar, Patricia Hunt Holmes makes us aware of the terrible nature of sex trafficking in the context of a fast-paced, exciting Houston story that moves from affluence and glitz to barrio cantinas and the federal courthouse. The charitable, can-do nature of Houston is reflected in the wide cast of residents who help a young man on an extremely dangerous mission to find his kidnapped sister. This book will be an added weapon in our fight against sex trafficking.” –Sylvester Turner, Mayor, City of Houston

Diego

Chapter Four Excerpt from Searching for Pilar

By Patricia Hunt Holmes

Entering the station, Diego saw four police officers standing around the room smoking cigarettes. The air in the room was thick and harsh with smoke. There was a small television propped on one of the desks and they were all watching a fútbol game. It took a few minutes to get their attention. He yelled, “Pardon, señores!”

“What do you want?” a short, burly officer with a cigarette hanging out of his mouth finally asked Diego, while looking over his shoulder at the television. He sounded irritated at being interrupted. The other men cheered a goal. “I am Lieutenant Juan Carlos Ruiz Perez, in charge of this station,” he said. Annoyed at having to look up at Diego, he straightened himself to his full height, though he still had to look up.

“Señor,” Diego said, loud enough to be heard over the noise. “I need help. I drove my sister into the city today. She wanted to shop for a surprise for her husband while I did some business for my father and went by the Estadio Azul for a few minutes. She was supposed to meet me at four at the Monumento a la Revolución. But she never came.”

“Hmmm, how old is your sister?”

“She is nineteen. She has a husband and baby in San José and she wanted to be home before dark. They don’t know she was coming into Mexico City.”

“Why not?” the lieutenant asked.

“She said it was a secret.”

“From whom?” The lieutenant’s curiosity was piqued.

“From everyone.”

The lieutenant turned his head to cough a deep cigarette cough. Then he said, “Did she tell you where she was going to shop?”

“No, señor.”

“It seems strange she did not give you an address or ask you to stay with her. Mexico City is a dangerous place for young women alone.”

“She said she didn’t want to hold me up on my business.” After hesitating, he added, “She knows I like to watch the professional fútbol clubs practice. She was being considerate.”

“It doesn’t seem like you were being considerate of your sister, leaving a young woman from a small town alone in this part of Mexico City,” the lieutenant said sharply.

“I guess not, sir,” Diego replied, realizing how thoughtless he had been.

“Do you see any clothing shops or markets in this neighborhood?” the lieutenant asked Diego, taking his cigarette out of his mouth and looking hard at him. He was not smiling. “If the surprise was for her husband, why did she ask you to keep it a secret from everyone else?”

Diego looked down and shuffled his feet. Nevertheless, he tried to answer in a strong voice, “I don’t know, señor.” In the context of the lieutenant’s questions, he was starting to realize the oddness of Pilar’s actions and that his own conduct had been careless at best.

“You don’t know much, do you?” Lieutenant Ruiz stated as he walked into his small office and motioned for Diego to sit down in the chair across from his desk.

Sinking into the chair, Diego looked pleadingly at the officer. “Will you help me find her?”

“It’s too early to consider her a missing person,” Lieutenant Ruiz replied in his gruff voice, flicking the ashes and taking another drag on his cigarette. “That is, if she is lost. Perhaps this is just another case of a pretty young woman who got tired of living in the country and talked her brother, who doesn’t have a brain in his head, into helping her make a getaway to the city. She is probably meeting her lover here and you will never see her again. On the other hand, she may get homesick or the lover may beat her, and she will run back to her husband in a few days. We see situations like this every day.”

“Pilar wouldn’t do that, señor,” Diego protested.

“Is her husband wealthy? A gang could be holding her for ransom.”

“No, he does not have any money. He lost his job recently.”

“Women have left their husbands for less,” the lieutenant sneered.

Lieutenant Ruiz seemed to be mulling over something, but then he abruptly said, “In any case, it’s late. Before you get into trouble yourself, go home and wait at least twenty-four hours. If she shows up, all is well. If she does not, come back and I will fill out the paperwork for a missing person. Eventually the paperwork will get to headquarters and maybe a search will begin. Now I need to get back to the game.”

Diego felt like a fool. He could hardly make his legs walk out of the police station. He knew that Pilar had not run away with another man.

Book Title: All the Way to Italy: A modern tale of homecoming through generations past
Author: Flavia Brunetti
Category: Adult Fiction, 222 pages
Genre: Women’s Fiction (can fit into YA Fiction as well)
Publisher: Ali Ribelli Edizioni
Release date: April 21, 2018

Synopsis

Until her dad died, Little considered herself a Californian. Now, thanks to half a letter, a symbol she can’t quite remember, and writer’s block, she finds herself back in Italy, the country of her birth. In a headlong rush to return to her beloved San Francisco, Little will journey throughout Italy, hoping to find the answers she needs to move on with her life so she need never look back. She’ll enlist the help of the woman who raised her, Sira, her father’s sister; but Sira has secrets she’s kept for decades, and Little underestimates the power of the country she fled years before.

In this powerful story of mixed cultures in a world trying to globalize, one girl’s struggle to leave her home behind will lead her back to the women in her family and the memories each of them has safeguarded through the generations. From war-torn Italy to the belpaese of today, All the Way to Italy is a tale for those in search of a balance between wanderlust and the necessity to come home, a reminder that although we may be fragments, we are never a lost cause.

Overcoming writer’s block: the Rome edition

I want to tell you that I never have writer’s block; that while I wrote All the Way to Italy I simply flitted from chapter to chapter, full of words and ideas and the ability to merge those two until I had a book.

The truth is quite different (as it often is). It involved a lot of pacing the hallway, re-reading the same sentence over and over, and staring at myself in the mirror repeating mantras like, “now you will sit down and write something,” and “get it together. You love. Editing. You. Love. Editing.” I thought it might be helpful to share some of the things that helped me deal with not just writer’s block, but writer’s frustration. And since All the Way to Italy is set largely in Rome, I’m including a few local tips!

  1. Walk it out

There will come a point when you’ll have been staring at the same spot on the page for forty-five minutes (no? Just me?), or even worse, when you’re rewriting, you’ll reach that moment where suddenly the entire paragraph, chapter, nay, half the book, must immediately be deleted. Do not do this. Get up and walk it out. Fresh air is always a good thing (good general life advice), and if you’re in a suggestive city like Rome, just having a stroll is an inspiration. Stop thinking and walk/jog/run. Bring your notebook, ‘cause inspiration always strikes when you’re all the way out in Appia Antica, nowhere near any writing materials, and you will end up trying to write your idea down using pebbles from the side of the road. Hypothetically.

Rome edition: the Pantheon, Colosseo, Appia Antica.

  1. Pick up the phone and call someone you trust

Sure, we can do things on our own. But, in my experience, really great results come from outside input, from calling up that friend you trust wholeheartedly and saying, what do you think of this? We all bring our individual skillsets to the table, and it makes us, and our writing, richer. Tip: pay it forward! The next time a fellow writer or friend needs your input, be on the listening side, and then give encouraging guidance, as only you can (see point 4!).

  1. Park it

This is similar to number 1, except we’re doing more lolling. Grab a picnic and a book, find a nice park, and give your mind a break.

Rome edition: Villa Borghese, the Orange Garden, Villa Pamphilj, Villa Torlonia.

  1. Have a talk with yourself

Most of the time, we’re our own biggest critics. No matter how much we do, it’s very rarely enough. Take a moment to look yourself in the eye and remind yourself that you’re following a dream, a commendable endeavor in itself, and that you are fantastic and driven. Do a little dance. Acknowledge yourself!

As frustrating as the writing process can be, we all know it’s worth it, that there’s nothing quite like finally getting that short story exactly how you envisioned it (or even better, the surprise when it becomes an entirely new thing that you didn’t know you wanted), or that moment when you’re first holding your novel in your hands, or even when you’ve written a blog post you’re really happy with.

And so, happy writing (and reading!), my friends. I wish you nothing but the best of luck with all of your endeavors!

Since his mother’s passed away and his girlfriend’s left him, there’s been no music, no feeling…nothing. While on a run, he witnesses what a appears to be a young woman who needs help and finds himself hopping on a Greyhound Bus headed for Las Vegas.
Hope Jones does not need a celebrity super star’s help and when he gets on the bus and tries to make friends with her…she turns him down flat. But when she discovers he’s fleeing from a stalker….she decides to listen to his story. Too bad … he lied about it to get her talk to him. Good thing she tells him to go away!
But after reluctantly sharing dinner with him at a bus stop, breaking down in Rawlin’s Wyoming, and hypothesizing about having thirteen children together and living in a broken down fire station, she finds herself more and more intrigued with the famous Country Music Star.
