THE DOWNFALL OF GALVESTON’S MAY WALKER BURLESON

Texas Society Marriage & Carolina Murder Scandal

Jennie May Walker Burleson was envied for having everything a woman of her time could want—the privileged upbringing, the dazzling good looks, the dashing war hero husband. She was admired for demonstrating that a woman could want more, from the front of the 1913 Woman Suffrage Procession to the bottom of a Mesoamerican archaeological dig. But as she stood over the body of her husband’s second wife, gun in hand, society’s envy and admiration quickly hardened into pity and scorn. T. Felder Dorn examines the complicated trajectory of her life as socialite, suffragist, and shooter.

Excerpt from The Downfall of Galveston’s May Walker Burleson

by T. Felder Dorn

Preface

Glenwood Cemetery

Established in 1871 in a then rural Houston, Texas, Glenwood Cemetery quickly became the burial site of choice for the wealthy, for the social elite and for people prominent in their fields of endeavor. William P. Hobby, governor of Texas (1917–19) and publisher of the Houston Post, and his wife, Oveta Culp Hobby, who held the rank of colonel while she was the first commander of the Woman’s Army Corps (WAC) in World War II and who became secretary of health, education and welfare under President

Eisenhower, are buried there, along with James Anson, the last president of the Republic of Texas; as well as Edward Mandell House, an advisor to President Woodrow Wilson who helped negotiate the acceptance of Wilson’s Fourteen Points, and many businessmen of great wealth in fields such as banking and the petroleum industry.

About one-tenth of a mile from the grave site of billionaire Howard Hughes, known for his contributions to the movie industry and aviation, but who became reclusive near the end of his life, is the Walker family plot. At rest there, near the graves of her prominent Galveston parents John Caffery and Clara Wilson Walker, is May Walker Burleson. Mrs. Burleson had a brief period of national fame in 1913 when she served as grand marshal for a parade in the nation’s capital on behalf of woman suffrage. Riding a

black horse, she led a huge procession, with floats, bands and an estimated eight thousand persons, mostly women, down Pennsylvania Avenue from the Capitol to the White House grounds. She continued to work for woman suffrage, and after the Nineteenth Amendment was approved, she was active in the Democratic Party. These accomplishments later were eclipsed, however, by the sensation that resulted when May Burleson fatally shot her ex-husband’s second wife during lunchtime in a hotel cafeteria.

This work covers the roles of both Mrs. Burleson and her husband in their unusual marriage and recounts the bitter divorce proceedings that terminated that union. The narrative then moves to the homicide, to her trial and incarceration and finally to her post-prison years. An “Aftermath” section includes reflections on the lives of both May Walker and Richard Coke Burleson.

This book is the third volume in a trilogy about three women who were convicted of crimes involving homicide in South Carolina. For most of the year 1942, these women, one of whom was Mrs. Burleson, occupied adjacent cells in the Woman’s Prison of the South Carolina State Penitentiary. One of the other two women was Beatrice Snipes, who had been convicted in 1933 of killing a rural policeman by pistol fire the prior year. The third member of the trio was Sue Logue, who was electrocuted in January 1943 for being part of a conspiracy to have killed the man who had killed her husband in self-defense during an altercation. Mrs. Snipes’s story was told in Death of a Policeman; Birth of a Baby: A Crime and Its Aftermath. Mrs. Logue’s story was the subject of The Guns of Meeting Street: A Southern Tragedy.

T. Felder Dorn graduated from Duke University in 1954 with a BS in chemistry and was awarded a Ph.D. in that discipline in 1958 by the University of Washington. He was a member of the chemistry faculty at the University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee, in 1958–69 and then served four years on the program staff of the College Board in New York. From 1973 to 1991, he held administrative positions at Kean University in Union, New Jersey, serving as associate dean, dean, and vice-president for academic affairs. His last ten years at Kean were spent as a professor of chemistry. He retired in 2001. Felder Dorn and his wife, Sara Ruth, have resided in Millburn, New Jersey, since 1973. They have three children and three grandchildren. Dorn has previously published four books: Challenges on the Emmaus Road: Episcopal Bishops Confront Slavery, Civil War, and Emancipation (University of South Carolina Press, 2013); Death of a Policeman, Birth of a Baby: A Crime and Its Aftermath (Xlibris, 2012); The Guns of Meeting Street: A Southern Tragedy (University of South Carolina Press, 2001); and The Tompkins School, 1925–1953: A Community Institution (Attic Press, 1994).

Her thumb tapped the callback option before she even had a chance to check the clock. Three minutes after eleven. He’d be boarding soon. One little phone call should be safe enough.

“Hello.”

His voice was warm and deep and put her in the mood for Barry White music and lamps draped with gauzy scarves. “Plan on visiting any brothels while you’re in the great state of Nevada?”

He laughed. A full, rumbling laugh that did little to dispel the red wallpapered room she’d conjured in her head. “You never know. If the casinos don’t have any good headliners…”

She could see the whole setup perfectly. Of course, her version was highly romanticized and most likely television inspired. Reality was no doubt a fairly businesslike concern, but this was her trip down the rabbit hole. If she wanted piles of pillows, sheets made of satin, and heavy velvet drapes on the four-poster bed she had him tied to in her head, who could tell her no?

“Boarding soon?”

“Let’s get back to the brothel thing,” he teased.

“Not the kind of headline I want to spin. Besides, it’s been done. Promise me you won’t do anything reckless.”

Ty sobered instantly. “My dad is flying out, remember? I’ll probably be playing thirty-six holes of golf each day and listening to the old man heckle me about my slice.”

Dropping onto the bed, she leaned back against the headboard and pulled her knees up under her shirt. “Shift your weight before you start your downswing.”

“You golf?”

“Some,” she replied, relishing his pleased surprise.

“What’s your handicap?”

“The shoes,” she said without hesitation. He laughed again, and she beamed, delighted to have found their easy rhythm once again. “Pick up any good trinkets in the gift shops?”

“I’ve been hanging out in the Captain’s Club.”

“Free drinks?”

“Coffee.”

She nodded. “Good boy.”

“I’m no boy.”

“Man,” she corrected, allowing a sly smile to color the words. “Big, strong, handsome man.”

“Much better.”

“So your dad will be keeping an eye on you. That makes me feel much better.”

“Were you really worried?”

Millie caught a hint of injury in his question and hurried to correct course. “Well, not really, but I wanted to make you feel all badass and loose cannon, because I know guys like to think they are.”

His chuckle told her she’d hit the right note. “Yes, well, I think I perfected my badass loose cannon act last week.”

They lapsed into silence but not the uncomfortable kind. This was easy. Companionable. The quiet was unusual for Millie but not unwelcome. She spent so many hours of the day pitching and talking and promoting, she sometimes found it hard to switch off the ticker in her head. But Ty made the quiet she’d dedicated her life to filling seem almost natural. Almost but not entirely. Nature abhorred a vacuum and all that.

Synopsis

These dogs aren’t the only ones in need of rescue

For devoted no-kill shelter worker Kelsey Sutton, rehabbing a group of rescue dogs is a welcome challenge. Working with a sexy ex-military dog handler who needs some TLC himself? That’s a different story.

Kurt Crawford keeps his heart locked away from everyone. Well, everyone except the dogs who need his help…and always have his back. But as Kurt gets to know the compassionate, beautiful woman he’s been assigned to work with, he can’t help but feel a little puppy love…

Amazon | Barnes & Noble | iBooks | Kobo | IndieBound

Excerpt

It had been years since Kurt had felt genuine peace slip over him after the sun sank below the horizon and stars studded the sky. In Afghanistan and in the jungles of Honduras, he’d rarely been able to relax, even on nights when he was tucked in a bunk and crowded with the sounds and smells of other marines and a handful of dogs not far away. He hadn’t expected to be able to do so here either.

But the calm cradled his skin despite the surprise that accompanied it.

Standing under the stars, Kurt set his beer on the table and headed into the screened-in half of the porch. The pregnant Rottweiler let out a whine as he approached. Kelsey had taken her outside an hour or so before after making sure she ate a plentiful dinner.

Kurt hooked a leash onto the dog’s collar and led her around the yard long enough to ensure she was calm and obedient, then asked her to sit on command before letting her off leash. Once free from its confines, the Rott—Pepper, as Kelsey was calling her—gave her massive head a shake and trotted off into the yard. Kurt headed back onto the porch for his beer.

Taking a swig of beer, Kurt eyed the silhouette of an owl standing watch on an exposed branch of an enormous oak tree at the back of the yard. If Kurt hadn’t been outside when it let out a series of soft, low hoots, he wouldn’t have known the owl was there. It seemed to be watching the dog sniff around the dark yard as if it had come across an interloper in its nightly hunting spot.

A cool, gentle breeze swept over Kurt’s skin. He was thankful to no longer be living in sweltering lands. The dry oven that was the desert, and the wet, stifling tropics. He wondered how long it would be before he forgot the sensation of the heat rising off the desert sand late at the night as if he were holding his hand over a radiator. Or standing guard in the jungle at night, listening to the howler monkeys crossing the tree canopy while he scoped openings in the thick tropical forest for insurgents. One night he’d spotted a small, wild ocelot hunting at the edge of the base. About the size of a slender coyote, it had unusually large eyes and a sleek coat with spots and stripes.

As he was thinking about it, a very different feline stalked into view. Mr. Longtail. Who knew where the unusual cat had been this evening, but he was headed confidently toward the Rott, in full view of the owl. The enormous Maine coon was too big to ever end up dinner to an owl, but Kurt wasn’t so sure about the off-leash Rott. Setting down his beer, he whistled confidently.

Pepper—the name was sticking even though naming these dogs would create unnecessary emotional attachment—pricked up her ears and looked his way.

“Come here, girl,” Kurt called, half holding his breath as the cat trotted directly into the dog’s path. Like earlier this afternoon, Pepper didn’t disappoint. She dropped into a play bow and woofed. Mr. Longtail stopped mid-step as the hair along his back and tail stood out stick straight. As if he’d had no idea a dog was capable of such a baritone woof. Pepper didn’t seem to notice. She sniffed the cat all over, nudging his hind end off the ground with her strong head.

Kurt emptied his pocket of treats for her. Mr. Longtail followed, walking underneath her, straight to Kurt’s legs to rub against his jeans. The cat meowed, and Kurt was surprised to hear a deep, thrumming purr radiating from his chest.

After getting Pepper back in her kennel, Kurt headed into the kitchen, Mr. Longtail following. He fed the cat and helped himself to a slice of cold pizza. He considered hunting down a notebook and pen and making a to-do list of all the items bouncing around his head, but even if he could find a pen and a notebook, he doubted he’d get halfway through writing the list before becoming distracted. Experience had proven he could tackle projects of almost any size, but he couldn’t make a list to save himself. So instead, he dove into repairs of the Sabrina Raven estate the way he did everything else—focusing on whatever came to the front of his thoughts.

He sorted through a bulky metal toolbox for all the flooring nails he could find. “Come on, cat,” Kurt said to the watchful Mr. Longtail. He slipped the nails into his pocket and fisted the hammer, heading out of the kitchen. “You and I could likely use each other’s company. Let’s see if I can get those stairs to be a bit less of a hazard so I can make it up to one of those old feather beds you’ve been sleeping on.”

With a twitch of his tail, the cat followed him out of the kitchen, and Kurt suspected he was on the way to making an unlikely friend.

Review

I am a sucker for any book that has dogs in it, and this one is loaded with dogs. They were rescued from evil owners that pitted them against one another for what they thought was a sport. You expect the dogs to aggressive to all the humans they come across, but not always.

Kurt is tough and wants nothing to do with training dogs anymore after losing one overseas to an explosive device. It devastated Kurt because there was nothing he could do. He comes back home and gets rooked into helping his mentor rehabilitate the dogs rescued from the fight situation. He initially turns it down, but one look at Kelsey and her optimistic outlook and knowing who was going to come in and help train the dogs got the better of him.

Kelsey may be optimistic but she is a realist too. She loves all animals and the job working at the local shelter is perfect for her. She has a kind heart and we see that when she is checking out the dogs before they can be transferred to their temporary shelter that she will be overseeing. I can imagine seeing any dog in the condition they were in would be hard. It would probably break my heart. But she can be tough when the situation arises.

I enjoyed the evolution of the love story between Kurt and Kelsey. They both have some baggage to wade through and leave behind, but having each other to lean on helps their relationship move forward.

There were a few situations with the dogs that left me with tears rolling down my face. Not for bad/sad reasons, but for happy ones.

Very enjoyable and we give it 5 paws up!

I Will Wait

Guest Post by Judithe Little

My head is always swimming with songs, fragments of refrains, repeating rhythms. So it seemed natural that one of the characters in my historical novel, Wickwythe Hall, a French woman named Annelle LeMaire, would also have a song playing in her head. But what song would that be?

One of the themes of Wickwythe Hall is waiting. Annelle is waiting for word from her brothers, fighters with the French Foreign Legion in North Africa, to know that they’re safe. In France, on the beaches of Dunkirk, British soldiers wait for rescue. In England, where most of the novel takes place, Mabry Springs, an American married to a wealthy Brit, waits for the Germans to come, for the bombs to fall. And Reid Carr, a secret liaison between Downing Street and the White House, waits with Winston Churchill for help from President Roosevelt, praying the U.S will step in and join a war they want no part of.

A popular French song at the time was J’Attendrai, which means “I will wait.” This is the song that plays in Annelle’s head and that she sometimes hums to herself. It’s a beautiful song that evokes the time period, the sense of longing, the melancholy of not knowing what will happen next.

Synopsis

HE LEFT TO KEEP HER SAFE

Believing he’s too dangerous to be among people, feline hybrid Tanner Howland retreats deep into the forests of Washington State—with no choice but to leave behind the woman who’s captured his heart. What he doesn’t know is that she followed him…

SHE WOULDN’T STAY BEHIND

Heartbroken and determined, Dr. Zarina Sokolov tracks Tanner into the wild. Her presence unleashes Tanner’s protective instinct—big time. Locals have been disappearing and he is desperate for Zarina to leave. As the kidnappings escalate, Tanner must embrace the dangerous instincts he fears so much. But with Zarina at his side, he’ll have to learn to control his animal impulses, or lose himself—and the woman he loves—to the beast within.

Sighing, Tanner closed his eyes and leaned his head back against the wall of the cabin again. Zarina didn’t say anything else, not wanting to interrupt him if he was silently saying a prayer of thanks. She frowned a little, realizing she didn’t know whether he was religious or not. Then again, there was a lot about Tanner she didn’t know. He kept a lot of stuff to himself. She wished he didn’t do that. Maybe she could make his life better if she knew more about him. Which, strangely enough, was part of the reason she was so attracted to him. That stoic, stubborn nature of his was alluring—when it wasn’t driving her crazy.

Tanner’s eyes abruptly snapped open, and he pushed away from the wall, completely alert. A moment later, Zarina heard the sound of footsteps approaching the cabin. She turned to see Burt, along with another man and a dark-haired teenage girl who was about eighteen or nineteen. The man was probably the same age as Burt, but his face was more lined and his eyes more weary.

It wasn’t until the trio stopped in front of them that Zarina caught sight of the half-healed scar along one side of the girl’s neck. Four parallel wounds, the two in the middle deeper than the ones on either side. It took Zarina only half a second to recognize those scars had come from a shifter—or a hybrid.

Zarina shot a quick look Tanner’s way, telling herself it wasn’t possible. She searched his face for some indication he was the one who’d hurt the girl, but he merely returned her gaze.

“Zarina, you know Burt already,” Tanner said. “This is Chad and his daughter, Lillie.”

Burt gave Zarina a nod while Chad and Lillie took turns shaking her hand. Zarina should have realized the girl was the man’s daughter as soon as she saw them together. They had the same gray eyes, aquiline nose, and arching brows.

“I can’t tell you how much I appreciate you getting here so fast, Tanner,” Chad said. “And for bringing your friend.” He looked at Zarina. “I don’t know what we would have done without her, except maybe lose Lorraine. How is she?”

Zarina opened her mouth to point out that there would have been a lot less drama if they’d simply taken the woman to a hospital like normal people, but the sight of three huge, fierce-looking men coming toward them made her forget what she’d been about to say.

It wasn’t just the blatant anger on the men’s faces that stunned her speechless. It was the fact that she recognized them. But even as she stood there with her mouth hanging open, she told herself she had to be wrong. There was no way they could possibly be the men she thought they were, because the last time she’d seen them, Stutmeir’s goons had been dragging their dead bodies out of an abandoned ski lodge not more than fifteen miles from here.

“What the hell is she doing here?” one of the men snarled, showing off inch-long fangs to go along with his suddenly flaming red eyes. Dark-haired with a broad nose and full lips, he was nearly as tall as Tanner. “She’s one of those damn doctors who tortured us. I’d know her scent anywhere.”

Zarina was still trying to wrap her mind around the fact that the hybrids were alive when the one who’d spoken strode toward her, his clawed hands itching to do damage. She barely had enough time to get out of the way before Tanner stepped in front of her and stiff-armed the guy in the chest.

“Back off, Spencer,” Tanner growled, his tone more menacing than Zarina had ever heard it. He pinned the other two hybrids with a glare. One had blond hair and a stocky build while the other was a tall, muscular dark-skinned man. “Peter and Malcolm, that goes for you too.”

That warning only got them more riled up. Zarina watched in alarm as Peter and Malcolm snarled and bared their fangs. Clearly, they were ready to go through him to get to her.

Tanner didn’t give them a chance. He dropped his hands to his sides, his claws extending to their full length so fast that blood splattered on the wooden planks of the porch. Then he bared his fangs at the men and roared so loud, people five miles away probably heard it.

Zarina reached out to grab his arm, desperate to stop the fight before it started, but Tanner slipped left and caught the blond-haired Peter in midjump. Latching onto the man’s shoulders, Tanner spun him around and sent him crashing into one of the pillars supporting the porch. Peter slammed into it with an audible crunch. Something told Zarina the sound wasn’t entirely from the wood breaking.

Peter hadn’t even tumbled to the ground before Tanner was moving again. He intercepted Malcolm just as the man lashed out at Zarina’s face with his claws. Their sharp points missed her by mere inches, and she gasped as Tanner ran headlong into her attacker, shoving him away from her.

Tanner and Malcolm went down in a pile, quickly becoming a rolling ball of muscles, snarls, growls, and flashing claws. A split second later, Spencer joined the fray.

Crap. This was going to get so much worse.

Heart pounding, Zarina hurried forward to intervene, but an arm wrapped around her waist, jerking her to a stop before she’d gone more than a few feet. She glanced over her shoulder to see Burt holding onto her. A few feet away, Chad was doing the same to his daughter. All around the camp, people poked their heads out of doors and windows, a few of them venturing out of their cabins to see what the commotion was about.

“You can’t get between them, not while they’re like this,” Burt insisted. “You do, and you’re the one who’s going to get hurt.”

Zarina knew Burt was right, but that didn’t keep her from fighting against his grip anyway. Tanner was in danger. That was all she cared about.

But Burt refused to let her go, so she was forced to watch as Peter joined Spencer and Malcolm. The three hybrids looked barely human now, their eyes completely lost in a glow of red and fangs flashing.

Tanner might be bigger than all three of them and a former Army Ranger to boot, but there was no way he could fight that many out-of-control hybrids all at once. He was so focused on Spencer and Malcolm that he never saw Peter coming at his back. Malcolm gripped Tanner’s shoulder, digging his claws in deep and flipping Tanner over. Peter immediately lunged forward and sank his fangs into Tanner’s free arm, pinning it to the ground and holding him tight. That’s when Spencer leaned in close and lifted his hand, his claws aimed at Tanner’s exposed neck.

Zarina’s heart seized in her chest. Oh, God. Spencer was going to kill him.

Review

What I like about this first book in a new series – it has food, a blogger, and a murder!  Yup, all my favorite things to happen in a cozy mystery.  Ok so maybe there are more things I like, but I found this new series to be intriguing.  Hope has had her 15 minutes of fame on a reality television show and now she is quite content back in the town where she grew up, writing a blog, and creating new recipes.  She has had some hard knocks in her life.  She has a strong character and s fiercely loyal to her friends and family.  She even fancies the local sheriff, a long time friend and now possibly more.

I liked that there was no shortage of suspects.  There were quite a few people at the party that could have killed Peaches, but her sister is not one of them despite being the prime suspect in Peaches murder.  I kept trying to rule out characters but it was tough, and when the true murderer was revealed I was quite shocked!  The author did a great job of hiding the true killer until the end.

I always enjoy reading the first book in a new series because you never know if there is a winning idea behind the series or not.  I think the author has a great series and I can’t wait to see what happens in the next book.

We give this 4 paws up!

Hunter, it turns out, is opening a fancy new restaurant and bakery right on the waterfront—Emma’s competition. Excerpt

“You.” A woman’s voice called behind him, and he turned to see the cupcake girl marching toward him. She was still wearing that black-and-white frilly apron. With her blond ringlets flying around her delicate face and flinty sparks in her gray eyes, Hunter felt like he was about to be attacked by a sexy Goldilocks.

He searched behind him as she approached, to make sure she wasn’t talking to someone else. “Me?”

She stopped in front of him, a little out of breath from her march down the street. Her chest lifted and fell intriguingly over the white apron lace, but her rosebud mouth was pursed tightly and Hunter took a step back. He had seen that look on women before. Goldilocks was not happy.

“Yes, you,” she said through gritted teeth. “You lied to me. You’re not a tourist.”

“Uh,” Hunter glanced around for a moment. “I’m not?”

“No, you’re not.” She stepped in close, grabbing the pastry box out of his hand. She peered inside and glared up at him in accusation. “And of course. You had to go and eat all three of them, didn’t you?”

He blinked. “But, I paid for them, remember?”

“That’s not the point. You. Ate. Them.”

“Yes,” he said carefully. Maybe Goldilocks liked to spike her morning porridge. “They were delicious?”

Ugh.” She stomped her foot and he tried not to smile. She was irritated, yes, but so damn adorable. Even if she was a little bit odd.

“You shouldn’t have eaten them because you weren’t being honest with me. You’re not just a tourist passing through. You’re the new owner of that.” She pointed to the empty waterfront building that would soon be his fancy new café and restaurant.

“Yes.” He held out his hand and gave her his best smile. “I’m Hunter Kane.”

She frowned back at him, ignoring his hand. “I know who you are. And you should have told me that before I gave you those Sweet Success cupcakes.”

“Why?”

“Because I own Fairy Cakes, and now your business is going to take away all my customers.” She looked so upset that Hunter felt a twinge of pity for her, even though she was being ridiculous. Competition was the name of the game in any industry, and restaurant ownership was no exception. “Look, I’m sorry you feel that way, but it’s just business. And why would my eating your chocolate cupcakes be a problem anyway? It’s not like I’m going to steal the recipe or something.”

“Ha,” she scoffed. “As if you ever could. My cupcakes are special, and everyone on this island knows it.”

“Oh . . . kay.” He still wasn’t quite sure what she was getting at.

“And now you’ve gone and eaten them.” She threw her hands up in the air.

Hunter frowned down at her. “Well, excuse me, ma’am. I thought that was the whole point of buying them.”

She jammed her hands onto her hips. “First of all, I’m twenty-five years old. Don’t call me ‘ma’am.’ Save it for old ladies with lapdogs.”

“Fine, Cupcake.” He shouldn’t have said it. He knew it. But something about her righteous indignation made him want to tease her. She gasped, her eyes narrowing on him like an angry feline. He was so dead.
