My Own Mr. Darcy
After being dragged to the 2005 movie Pride and Prejudice by her mother, sixteen-year-old Elizabeth’s life changes when Matthew Macfadyen’s Mr. Darcy appears on the screen. Lizzie falls hard and makes a promise to herself that she will settle for nothing less than her own Mr. Darcy. This ill-advised pledge threatens to ruin any chance of finding true love. During the six intervening years, she has refused to give any interested suitors a chance. They weren’t Mr. Darcy enough.
Coerced by her roommate, Elizabeth agrees to give the next interested guy ten dates before she dumps him. That guy is Chad, a kind and thoughtful science teacher and swim coach. While she’s dating Chad, her dream comes true in the form of a wealthy bookstore owner named Matt Dawson, who looks and acts like her Mr. Darcy. Of course she has to follow her dream. But as Elizabeth simultaneously dates a regular guy and the dazzling Mr. Dawson, she’s forced to re-evaluate what it was she loved about Mr. Darcy in the first place.
Review:
I LOVED this book! The story of a girl, that has in her mind what her Mr Perfect would be like and it turns out that she wants Mr. Darcy from Pride and Prejudice! And not just any one but one that looks just like Matthew Macfadyen’s portrayal in the movie she saw when she was 16. Luckily she has a friend that tells her that she is missing out on life and makes her go out with Chad, the guy she met in the supermarket, at least 10 times and to give him a fair shot. She does and realizes that while he doesn’t look like Mr Darcy, he is very nice and fun to be with….until one day when HE walks into the bank where she works as a teller. Yes, the HE is Matt Dawson who looks just like the actor in the movie and he even has the same personality as Mr Darcy…brooding and somewhat rude. However, Elizabeth doesn’t let that stop her, she firmly believes that he is the one!
The story has a lot of twists and turns and some hard moments for Elizabeth when she must decide between the two. Is Matt Dawson really who she wants, or is it Chad? It is a tough choice she has to make during the book but it hits home for many women, choosing the right man. I like how the various characters force Elizabeth to look at reality and not fantasy, because thinking she wants Mr Darcy, is that realistic? Probably not because after all he is just a character from a book. Plus Elizabeth experiences various emotions and learns some things about herself and what she is willing to accept or not accept for her life. Does she want a life full of compromises or one filled with happiness.
