āThereās other news,ā Justin said. āWe made contact with a man driving an army truck.ā
āThe army?ā
āSomeone with the army?ā
āThereās an army?ā
āWhose army?ā Peteās voice rang above the excited babble.
āThatās the right question,ā Justin said. āWhose army? He might have been wearing a uniform and claiming affiliation, but I have my doubts.ā
āHe claimed to be from the US Army?ā
āClaimed,ā Justin said, stressing the word hard. āAnd his claim had a few inconsistencies. I was in the Army, and I know. Whatever this guy is a part of, itās not the army as we knew it.ā
āWhat did he want?ā
āSaid he was out scouting and saw the smoke. He agreed to leave a message outside of Clayton if his people want to get in contact with us again. And I would imagine they will.ā
āLast thing we need is another fight,ā Grady said. He took off his hat and wiped the sweat from his forehead. āYou think they know where we are?ā
āGeneral area. We wouldnāt be that hard to find if someone was really searching for us. If theyāre really army, then yes, they know exactly where we are as we speak. But as I said, I have my doubts.ā
āThink it will come to a fight?ā Pete asked.
Justin scratched his chin. āI really canāt say. What I can say is that we always need to be prepared for it, prepared to defend what is ours.ā
āWhat if they really are the army? Would we be America again?ā
āWait. When did we stop being America?ā
āAmerica is dead.ā This came from David, his voice as blunt as a dropped stone. āWe all saw it die two years ago. I donāt know what we are now, but the Constitution sure aināt in effect anymore. Thereās no government. Thereās no social contract holding us together. Thatās what America was, you knowāa collective agreement of the people. Now weāre justāā He sliced a hand through the air.
āIf the army is still active, that would mean there is a government, which would make this still America,ā Grady said. āTheyād be the governmentās representatives, establishing order.ā
Justin shook his head. āYouāre thinking way too far ahead. Even if they are US Armyāand thatās a very big ifāthey donāt have control of the whole country. There is no centralized government, no law enforcement. Theyāre not coming to rescue us.ā
