They were on their way to the Seaside Bookshop. He’d promised Tate a new book. His son loved books. At night, Tate couldn’t pick just one for a bedtime story, He’d choose four or five. Liam’s mother said Tate was just like him at that age.

Liam wanted to encourage his son’s love of reading. He made a point of reading Tate at least one book each evening. They’d read his small collection of books a number of times already. He planned to expand Tate’s library this Christmas.

As they neared the bookshop, both sides of the street were filled with carts covered with a light dusting of snow. Finally at the end of the block, he found a spot and zipped into it before some other Christmas shoppers could snag the spot.

He slipped Tate’s mittens on and pulled up the zipper on his little blue coat. He wanted to carry Tate but his stubborn, independent son insisted on walking. Hand in hand they made their way to the bookshop.

“We’re going to the bookshop. What sort of book would you like to get?” Liam asked. “One about a train?”

“Fire engines!”

Liam smiled. His son loved fire trucks. They were his favorite toy. It’s why there were at least six of them at home. Each was a different size or different color. Tate played with them every day. He hadn’t met a fire truck he didn’t like.

“What about a Christmas book?” When Tate didn’t respond, Liam said, “You know a story about Santa? Or how about some reindeer?”

Tate glanced up at him with wide eyes. “I like Rudy.”

Liam smiled at his son’s shortened name for Rudolph. He had a problem pronouncing the reindeer’s full name. “Me too. We’ll have to see if they have a book about him.”

The prior evening they’d watched Santa’s reindeer on television. Tate had been mesmerized by the flying reindeer. And then there was the one with the glowing nose. Tate proceeded to pinch his own nose. And when he got bored of that he’d climbed on Liam’s lap to pinch his nose. Repeatedly. And hard. The kid was definitely strong for his age.

Liam gripped Tate’s hand tightly as they made their way up the steps to the bookshop. Tate was adamant that he could climb the steps. It was a challenge for his little legs but he did it without any mishaps.

When Liam opened the door to the bookshop, the aroma of chocolate greeted them. He inhaled deeper. Mm… The hot chocolate smelled amazing and perfect for this cold, snowy weather.
