Why mysteries matter…

Someone recently asked me why I read and write mysteries. I didn’t have to think too long before I had an answer.

I write because I have to tell the stories, and I read mysteries because I love to solve the puzzle.

When you pick up a cozy mystery, you know that you’re going to be entertained, you’ll probably learn something new, you’ll meet new characters. And it will take your mind off what’s happening in real life, at least for a little while. You can pick up a book and read for ten minutes or an hour. Bring your book with you to an appointment and read while you wait. Have to bring your kids to a game? You can read while they’re practising or getting dressed for their game.

With everything happening in the world these days, mysteries provide readers with an escape.

With cozy mysteries, the main character is usually an amateur sleuth and a woman. As a reader, you meet women who are put into situations where they have to take charge of in order to either save themselves or someone they care about from going to jail or from getting hurt.

Mystery authors drop clues throughout the story. This allows readers to find the clues and try to solve the puzzle along with the sleuth.

You know that by the end of the book, justice will be served. The criminal will be caught and dealt with. All will be right in the community where the story took place. And that can be very satisfying.

In my book Death at the Scottish Broch, Mia Reid finds herself in a position where she needs to figure out who was responsible for her friend’s death and who is behind artifact thefts. Mia is a strong, independent woman accustomed to working on her own and figuring things out. But on the Isle of Skye, she also has to depend on Luke Forbes, an Interpol agent with whom she had a relationship with several years ago. She needs to learn to trust him again.

Thanks for reading my post. What do you enjoy about reading mysteries?

SBRFor me, it is solving the mystery or the puzzle. Who did it and why? Sometimes, I can guess the answer, sometimes not.
