Excerpt

Our heroine, Leighton, finds herself pregnant and alone without any options for employment or housing when a helpful waitress offers some unexpected assistance…

Then her phone screen went black. She found a charger in her purse and plugged it into the wall outlet. The phone woke up, but the icon at the top right showed no cellular service. She cursed under her breath, realizing her parents had made good on at least one of their threats. The acid in her stomach churned, ruining her appetite.

“Can I get you anything, dear?”

Leighton looked up. Her waitress, a middle-aged woman with shoulder-length grey hair and perceptive green eyes, stood by her table with a coffee carafe. “Do you have Wi-Fi?”

The waitress shook her head. “Sorry, dear, we don’t have the Wi-Fi, but we do make a mean stack of pancakes.”

“Thanks anyway. Unfortunately, what I need isn’t on your menu.”

“Oh, that’s too bad. Maybe I can help?”

She wanted to cling on to the offered lifeline and never let go. Was this the feeling of desperation? If it was, she never wanted to experience it again. But she had a baby to think about, and she needed help. Pushing her pride aside, she decided to confess her dire situation to the kindly waitress. “I’m in trouble. I found out I’m pregnant and… I’m doing it alone.” She smiled ruefully. “I need an apartment and a job. Not exactly items on the menu.”

“Actually, I might be able to help you.”

“Really?” Leighton’s eyes widened. “I was not expecting that.”

The waitress smiled, causing wrinkles to form at the sides of her eyes. “My granddaughter is looking for a roommate.” She glanced up when the bell jingled. “And speak of the devil—don’t worry, she’s quite sweet—she’s arrived.”

A tall, striking woman about her age walked toward her table, resembling a glamorous model with long, dark-brown hair cascading down her back, and espresso-colored eyes, accented with perfectly applied eyeliner. “Mémé!” She kissed the older woman on each cheek.

“Jolie, I’d like you to meet—Oh, pardonne-moi, I forgot to introduce myself or ask your name.” She pointed to the tag on her uniform. “I’m Rainy Beaumont. And you?”

“Leighton Carter.”

“Jolie, meet Leighton Carter, my lovely customer. Leighton, meet Jolie Richard, my lovely granddaughter.” Rainy turned to Jolie. “Leighton is also searching for a roommate.”

“An apartment, actually,” Leighton interrupted, hoping she didn’t sound ungrateful. “But an apartment with a roommate would be great.”

Jolie slid into the booth across from Leighton.

Rainy poured coffee into the mug in front of her.

“Merci. Now go away, Mémé, I have a new friend to get to know.”

Leighton barely held back her smile.

Rainy walked away, grumbling a bit to herself.

Jolie focused her attention on Leighton. Under the full force of her (hopefully) new friend’s dynamic personality, Leighton felt a bit intimidated. With some extra effort, she squared her shoulders and straightened her back. This was like a job interview of sorts. Well, a roommate interview. And having a place to live was pretty important. Okay, breathe, Leighton. You can do this.

“So, Leighton, what is your story?”
