animal cracker

Synopsis

Who hasn’t suffered in the workplace with a strangle-worthy boss? With humor and charm, “Animal Cracker” offers up a bunch of smart women who plot to get the goods on their boss at Boston’s venerable Animal Protection Organization.

Animal Cracker’s a comedy and a mystery! Diane Salvi has found the job of her dreams in a pet rescue operation. Her gorgeous boss should be on her side, but instead obstructs her efforts to promote more animal adoptions. Is he merely annoying, or guilty of something much, much worse? Diane, her reporter roommate, and some savvy women in the office join forces to find out.

Readers rave! “Hilarious plot is cleverly crafted around believable characters… couldn’t put it down, found myself laughing out loud through the plot’s twists and turns, and would highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys great dialogue and three dimensional characters.”

More from readers: “Worth missing a night’s sleep.” And “I laughed and cried, but mostly laughed.”

Animal Cracker is the perfect read for anyone seeking sharp writing, clever women, and a great page-turner. You don’t need to be an animal lover to love Animal Cracker, but if you are a champion of animal rights, you can’t miss this one.

Review

Hal is definitely a character you will hate. I suspected what was uncovered near the end (hate to write cryptic reviews but don’t want to spoil anything) and thought that Hal got what he deserved.

Diane is in a job she loves but just has to work for Hal, but at least she has a support network because no one else there likes Hal either.

The characters bring in a myriad of personalities and motivations to round out the story and make it interesting. I enjoyed the story although parts were not very realistic with what we see in today’s world….but this is fiction so the author can take some liberties IMHO!

There were a handful of F* bombs in the book, but thankfully not very many. I appreciate when the author is able to write a book and not use this word repeatedly.

This is a case of where a blogger has turned her daily musings into a book.  I had never heard of this blog, but I found the posts/chapters to be intriguing and even a bit introspective.  I didn’t necessarily relate to many of the posts since I do not have young children, but some of the stories had me laughing out loud…which confused my husband because he thought I was laughing at something on the television.  He should know better!

This was an enjoyable read and if you follow this blog you will probably love the book.

Rachel Stanhope, escaping from a failing marriage, seeks solace at her aunt’s ranch. There she is thrust into the colorful world of birdwatching. With a murder, lies, and secrets haunting her every move, she sets off to solve the mystery and clear her aunt’s good name.

As a favor to her aunt, a bird enthusiast, Rachel agrees to host meetings of the local bird watching society. On her first expedition, however, instead of finding a LeConte’s sparrow, she makes a much more disturbing discovery—a dead body. Identified as a reporter for Birds of a Feather magazine, this man was trying to dig up troubling information on Miriam’s deceased husband and a bird trafficking scheme. Now sweet Aunt Miriam is the prime suspect in this fowl play.

Review

This is a slightly older mystery being reissued (circa 1998 or so) and you can tell by some of the terminology in the book (telecommuting via modem and the computer discs). Despite that, the book was enjoyable and the author did a good job of not letting on who the killer was and why. I was truly surprised at that revelation but it made sense once you knew the whole story.

I did wonder how Rachel was able to leave her job to help her aunt in another state, but was glad to see that was explained a little bit into the book. I don’t know a lot about birds so it was interesting to hear some of the descriptions and learn about birds and what is on the endangered list and such.

We give this 3 1/2 paws up.

~~SUMMARY~~

Out-of-the-Dark-3D-Paperback-eReader

Everyone makes choices in life. Carina Porter may have made the wrong one.

After graduating college, she sits beneath her complimentary blanket in first class dreaming of grand adventures when she lands in Italy. Carina always put others first, but now, she’s resolved to indulge in an extraordinary vacation alone in Tuscany. Finally free from the demands of school and family, she’s determined to break away from her sensible nature and take risks. When a handsome man sits beside her on the plane, those daydreams vanish.

Stefan Savano is dashing and handsome. As he shares tales of his family and vineyard, Carina is swept away by his charm. After a brief courtship, Carina falls hard, but events come to light that make her question whether Stefan is as kind-hearted as he appears to be.

Things aren’t as they seem at Savano vineyard. Carina seeks answers, but it seems everyone is keeping a secret. When Stefan’s nephew, Enzo, pays a visit to the estate she’s drawn to his kind and free-spirited nature, and they form a friendship. Stefan becomes preoccupied with work, and when Enzo’s stay ends, Carina finds herself feeling isolated. It is then that illness and responsibilities require Stefan and Carina to return to his small vineyard in quaint Ravine Creek, New York.

There, Carina meets Stefan’s entire family and the time she spends with Enzo becomes more frequent. She tries to deny her traitorous feelings for him, but their attraction grows each day.

When Carina experiences a tragedy, she learns what true love means and must choose between an unhappy existence and a life of passion.

Her decision could do more than destroy a family—it could be fatal.
~~Review~~
Where to start – Carina has just graduated from culinary school and is taking a trip to Italy when she meets a man on a plane and he asks her to come with him to his house…and she goes with him.   At least for her foolish choice she didn’t end up dead.  And then she ends up staying with him at his home.  Ok, maybe he is handsome and charismatic, but where is her common sense?!
There are several shady characters in the book and I was very surprised at some of the actions until I got closer to the end and realized why some things happen the way that they did….don’t want to give away too much!
There are quite a few F* bombs in this book and some fairly graphic sex scenes.  Just a heads up if you prefer to avoid these types of books.
We give this book 3 1/2 paws.  While I enjoyed the basic story line (despite Carina’s foolish choices!), I felt like there was something missing.  I can’t really tell you what though…just something I can’t put my finger on.

Review

This book has action pretty much from the beginning, I just felt a little lost with the characters and what was happening at times. Maggie and Allie have an excellent mother/daughter relationship and it is nice to see them enjoying spending time with each other…even when it is under not so great circumstances.

I do wonder if this book was to be set about 10 years or so ago because Maggie takes pictures with a camera that uses film. Although they do have cell phones, so maybe she just prefers this type of camera?

There is a variety of interesting characters and I was very surprised at who the underlying “bad guy” turned out to be. The storyline keeps you hopping and wondering what situation Maggie might find herself in next.

We give this 3 1/2 paws and will be interested in seeing what the next book holds for Maggie.

Review

This was a good start to a new series.  I had my suspicious as to who and what was used to cause the murder, but not from any clues but just something in my gut.  Turns out I was right!

The book was well written but it felt like the characters were all over the place in the beginning..I can’t put my finger on anything, but it took awhile for me to get into the book.  But once I did the book moved along nicely and there was no shortage of characters to pin the murder on!

I do wonder if there will be a romance brewing between Detective Green (aka Dashing D) and Rory.  Only future books will tell!

We give this 3 1/2 paws.

Synopsis

Death, discovery, and dilemma set the tone in the first three chapters of this fiction novel set in South Chicago, 1977–1979. The Williams family moves to Chicago due to a job transfer. Seth is a commercial airline pilot with a wife and two sons.

Bribes, greed, jealously, infidelity, and intrigue challenge this Christian family, who find out at closing that their house is in a homeowner’s association with rules which must be followed. The accidental death of a neighbor’s child and the murder of a volunteer board member keep Sally Williams busy after she becomes a board member and then president, by default.

Many homeowners do not know this neighborhood is built over one of many former garbage dumps from Chicago’s trash in the 1950s and ’60s. Follow this family through two years of mishaps, mayhem, and murder as they try to live a normal family life filled with school, sports, and home-ownership problems. Not all neighbors live a life with Christian morals–some of them leading sad and shocking lifestyles which create a challenging environment.

This novel is the first of a series.

Review

This is a nice clean book about a housing community and the lives of several families in the community. To top it off, the community was built on top of a garbage dump that had been closed.  It is supposed to be a Christian book, but there aren’t a lot of religious mentions in the book.  There are a few that reference bible verses, but nothing too heavy.  The characters are very realistic and since the book is set in the 1970’s, the author did a good job of setting the scene for that era.  The characters are likeable and while I have never lived in a community with a homeowner’s association, I felt like the author showed what a HOA can be like and the problems that can arise.

There were some interesting twists – long lost loves, murder and blackmail. I was surprised at a few of the twists and how the book ended but I felt like it didn’t really tie everything up, so perhaps that means a follow up book?  It does say that this is the first of a series so I guess time will tell!

I give this 3 1/2 paws.

Review

This book has good potential to become a great series.  The main character, Aggie, is nearing 40 and isn’t model thin (many of us can relate!) with a proclivity for trouble.  She has gone back to school and is studying aging which tie in nicely with the column she writes and her desire to start working out.  Aggie has three close friends: Meredith, her neighbor Grace and Sam, who she has been good friends with since she lived in Chicago.  There is a LOT more to the Aggie and Sam story but I won’t share any of that.  You might be able to figure it out before it is disclosed about halfway through the book, but maybe not.  I didn’t guess!

Overall I enjoyed the book but felt a little lost in the beginning.  For the first book in a new series, I expected more of a character set up at the beginning versus the middle of the book.  I was also surprised to see Aggie jump into this mystery as to who killed Holly when she just met her.  I also didn’t realize that Aggie had that much of a desire to get involved in investigating homicides.  As with most cozy mysteries, Aggie puts herself in harms way many times and is lucky to not get herself killed…but then it wouldn’t be a series if she did die.  The author does a good job of throwing a lot of possible murderers at the reader and managed to keep me from guessing who the killer might be from the list of suspects.  I never suspected the killer.

We give this book 3 1/2 paws since I felt a little lost in the beginning and didn’t think the book gave a good background on the characters until further into the storyline.  I will be reading the second book and feel like now that I have a handle on the characters that it won’t be as hard to understand the back story of their lives.

As a marketing expert, Jenna wants to make sure the grand opening of the Cookbook Nook draws a crowd, and no one is better at getting attention than her old college roommate, celebrity chef Desiree Divine. But when Desiree arrives in quiet Crystal Cove to do a cookbook signing, the diva stirs up more trouble than business…especially when she turns up dead.

Known for stealing husbands and burning bridges, Desiree left behind plenty of suspects—including Jenna. Though the celebrity’s life always appeared to be an open book, Jenna will have to read between the lines in order to clear her name, and catch a killer before another body is served cold.

Review

It was good and I enjoyed it, but the main character got on my nerves. I liked a lot of the other characters and perhaps it was just getting to know Jenna and her story, but she seemed really nervous/jumpy and while I know being accused of murder is enough to make everyone batty, she seemed a little over the top.

Now there is a hunky man who is a former chef, Rhett Jackson. I think he will be Jenna’s love interest since her husband went missing/died several years back..but wouldn’t it be a real twist if her husband wasn’t really missing and he pulled some stunt to get away from people? Only future books will tell us more about this.

That said, I have started book 2, Inherit the Word, and Jenna seems to have calmed down and I am enjoying it more.

I give this 3 1/2 paws.

prime deception

Synopsis

Poised to print headlines so scandalous they would have rocked the entire nation…now the front page of every newspaper starkly proclaims only one word: MURDER

John Quinn, an investigative journalist on England’s biggest-selling and most notorious tabloid newspaper, is about to write the story of his life – a scandalous exposé of one of the country’s most powerful men. But the story dies when Lorna Thomas, the kiss in his kiss-and-tell, kills herself on a quiet country road.

For six months Laurie Thomas’ twin sister had been the Deputy Prime Minister’s secret mistress – and following sister’s footsteps to London, and to the heart of government, Laurie grows more convinced that Lorna did not take her own life.

But if Lorna didn’t kill herself, who did? There’s only one person who can help Laurie – the very man who’s bed her sister had illicitly been sharing

Review

The book started off interesting…a reporter is finally going to get his due but his source Lorna, a young woman involved with a “big wig”, has ended up dead.  The “big wig” is the Deputy Prime Minister of England, Charles.  Of course he is married, but when does that ever stop people from having affairs?  There is a flashback to how they met and then back to the present (6 months later) when Lorna’s twin sister, Laurie shows up and believes her sister didn’t commit suicide and wants Charles help her figure out who killed her.

Then the book seemed to hit a lag right after Lorna’s death.  Charles seems to be in a funk and thought about their times together, but it seemed to drag on a bit.  Then enter Laurie, the twin.  Their interaction at first was rather strained and tense and rather odd.  Of course, Charles’ assistant, Faye, didn’t help matters.  She knew about the affair he was having and thought this was more of the same.

The story continued on and finally in the last two chapters the story really hit a high point and kept me engaged until the very end.  I was very surprised at the ending, definitely did not see this one coming.

Overall we give it 3 1/2 paws.  I might have given it 4 paws if it hadn’t been for the dragging in the beginning.
