A threatening message in Piper’s closet convinces Piper and Sam that they have to find out who is behind all of these disasters before someone gets hurt. Is it Broussard the stuffy concierge? Gladys, the sweet old lady who decided to join them for the weekend? When the smoke alarms go off and the spa erupts into panic, the chaos separates the friends and Piper stumbles into trouble. Will her friends be able to help her in time?

Review

To me, this is a unique cozy that addresses some heavy topics – mainly human trafficking.  I have to give the author major points for coving a heavy issue in this book and I definitely appreciated the information that was shared in relation to a friend of Piper’s from when she was younger.  It was thoughtfully addressed and well explained.  To top it off, it created quite a twist at the end, which I sort of expected but won’t tell you what it is in case you don’t guess!  Then there is the spa, which I inferred was created by a church, and the employees are volunteers but are doing this all for a good cause.  Hence the competition to raise money and Piper and Sam winning the spa weekend by raising the most funds for the charity.

Piper and Sam are each other’s yin and yang when it comes to their friendship and their work environment.  They make a great team in the bakery and many of their desserts sound delicious.  Even the name of the bakery makes the desserts sound sinful.  Piper is a chocolate fanatic and a woman after my own heart. She even brings chocolate to the spa just in case of an emergency.  Definitely someone that I would want to be associated with in case I needed some of that emergency chocolate.

The mystery is a little different – Piper and Sam are trying to find out who is leaving these threatening notes and what do they really mean.  They are threatening but vague and it takes some super sleuthing to get to the bottom of this mystery.  I was surprised at the antagonist as it wasn’t someone I suspected but some clues fell into place when everything was revealed.

As I mentioned, there is a twist at the end, a cliffhanger if you will, that wasn’t surprising but I am curious to see how this plays out in the next book.  I also read in the author’s bio that this is a YA cozy and I don’t think it fits in the YA category.  It is very clean, as all cozies should be, but I am not sure where the YA comes into play since the characters are at least in their 20s.

We enjoyed this book and give it 4 paws up.

Chapter One

“I brought home a surprise!” Rose Buchanan threw her arms out wide as if embracing the world. From the stories she told to the way she entered the room, Rose was exuberant and entertaining and enjoyed being the center of attention.

Isabel Buchanan, who was perfectly content on the fringes, pushed her wavy hair off her sticky forehead with hands that trembled from the nightmare drive through Atlanta to the airport to pick up her mom. Her mom’s trip to Scotland had doubled as both research and vacation. The jammed stop-and-go traffic had left Izzy flustered and already dreading their exit from the airport.

Rolling her stiff shoulders, Izzy stepped around the bumper of the car, popping the trunk open on the way. Her mom had a beautiful plaid scarf of greens and browns and blues tossed over her shoulder and what appeared to be new earrings. Either purchase might inspire her mother to gush, and she would expect reciprocal gushing from Izzy.

Making an educated guess, Izzy asked, “Are those earrings your surprise?”

Without waiting for an answer, she hauled one of her mom’s giant wheeled suitcases closer and prepared to heave it into the back. The sooner they got out of Atlanta, the sooner she could get back to work planning the High- land festival. Or she might pour an extra-large glass of wine and escape into a book. A guilty pleasure, consider- ing how much she still had to get in order in three scant weeks.

“Allow me, please.” A bearded man who had been rolling cases to the curb stepped forward with a grin and an accent Izzy couldn’t place.

She checked her pockets and winced. No cash to tip the man, and no hope her mom had thought of something so inconsequential.

“Do you like them? They’re hammered silver.” Her mom flipped her bobbed matching silver hair to the side and displayed one earring with her fingers. “And as a matter of fact, I did buy them from a lovely shop in Edin- burgh, but I brought something bigger home. Something more exciting.”

“Your scarf? It’s lovely.” Izzy gave her mom limited attention while she watched the man load suitcase after suitcase into her trunk, fitting them together like a puzzle. More luggage than her mom had left with. She waved to catch the man’s attention. “Hang on. That’s not all my mom’s stuff.”

For the first time, Izzy really looked at the man. He was close to her mom in age, and good-looking in a bear-like way with a gleaming white smile highlighted by a salt-and-pepper beard. His full head of hair was a shade darker, but graying heavily at the temples. The expression on the man’s face when he looked in her mom’s direction—a mix of adoration and amusement—cleared the fog of confusion.

Lord have mercy, her mother had brought back a six-foot, two-hundred-pound-plus souvenir from Scotland.

Review

I always enjoy this author’s books and this one takes us to Georgia where this little town is as if Scotland had a baby and it moved away and here it now resides!

Isobel (Izzy) and Alasdair is the couple that ends up together but not without a few interesting escapades and experiences.  Izzy is a woman of multiple talents and right now works a job that she doesn’t love and aspires to be an author.  Her problem is that she isn’t writing the right book for her talent.  Alasdair ventures to the US to make sure his Uncle Gareth isn’t being taken advantage of by a woman who happens to be Izzy’s mother.  I think Gareth has it more in hand than Alasdair.

The town is full of unique characters and shops which rounded out the main characters.  The town sounds like one I wouldn’t mind visiting or even living should I choose to get away from it all.

This story had quite a few spots that made me chuckle out loud and I found myself rooting for Izzy and Alasdair to realize what they have in each other and that life isn’t all about a job you don’t love.  There are some rough patches and distrust in the beginning, but the story moved along (somewhat slower than I would have anticipated at times) and I couldn’t wait to see how it ended.  I loved the epilogue especially and it sets us up for the second book in this series.

Some of my favorite lines:

“You might want to practice in the mirror before you unleash it on the tourists.”

“You’re wearing underwear.  I thought Scots went commando under their kilts.”

“No chastity belt. But I should warn you, it’s been so long I might have re-virginized.”

He unzipped her purse and pulled out one, but the rest followed like her purse was a condom clown car.

Overall we enjoyed this book and give it 4 paws up.

Excerpt

Mia stepped out from Ollie’s room to find the main cabin empty. A single lamp was on, and the dwindling fire still glowed in the fireplace. Neither Ben nor Turbo around, and Mia wondered if Ben was done for the night too. A rush of disappointment swept over her at the thought of not getting to say good night to him.

Swallowing it down, she headed to the door with the dogs. The snow boots were all lined up beside the door on two long, thick rugs that were wet from the clumps of ice and snow that had been clinging to the boots when they’d come inside. The cold, wet patches stung Mia’s bare feet as she slipped into hers. She grabbed her coat from the closet and snaked it up one arm, transferred the puppy, then snaked it up the other.

When Mia moved to open the door and realized it was unlocked, she looked closer at the row of boots. Ben’s were missing. Her heart skittered in her chest. She opened the door with bated breath, but he was nowhere in sight.

Feeling the rush of cold air, Sam gave a determined shake of his head. His muscles tensed against her as if he was getting ready to leap. Sadie trotted backward several feet from the door as if to say “No thanks.”

Holding it open wider, Mia encouraged her. “Come on, girl. It’ll be a quick one, promise.”

Sadie whined but reluctantly followed Mia outside to the porch. Blue-white moonlight poured over the yard, bright enough to create shadows from the trees on the snow, and thousands of stars dotted the sky. The puppy squirmed in her arms as she stepped out deeper into the yard, crunching snow under her boots, until she set him down and zipped her coat.

Ben and Turbo were nowhere to be seen. She headed out into the yard, unable to entice Sadie off the snow-cleared porch. Sam trotted along, creating his own path, diving underneath windswept mounds, burying himself completely, then popping up and shaking himself off.

Mia was laughing at his antics when Sadie tore off the porch at something she’d spotted, barking and racing away into the darkness at the side of the cabin. Mia tensed, waiting, squinting to make out something in the darkness while trying to will Sadie back. “Ben?”

“Thank God,” she said when he called out into the night that it was him. She felt a rush of hesitation as he neared. “I thought the dogs might need to get outside another time before I put them in their crates.”

“Ollie’s asleep already?”

“As soon as his head hit the pillow.”

“Fresh air will do that to you.” Ben fell into step beside her as they headed toward the house.

Mia’s throat grew tight, and there was no denying why. They needed to talk. For hours into the night. There was so much to discuss. The only problem was Mia didn’t want to waste another minute of it not kissing him.

She swallowed hard. “Thanks for everything. For coming and all. For being so good to him.”

“I love him.”

She did her best to snip through the strings of connection drawing her to him. She was at a loss for words again, and Ben wasn’t helping them come any easier. She sat a squirmy and excited Sam back onto the ground. They were both quiet as they watched Sam leap and jump in a patch of untampered snow.

“Are you ready to go in? It’s freezing.”

“Mia, I’m sorry I didn’t tell you about the baby.”

They’d each spoken at exactly the same time. Mia bit her lip. “I can see why you didn’t, I guess. Would you have? Eventually.”

“Yeah, definitely. I was trying to find the right time.”

She nodded, conscious of her beating heart and the deep breaths she was taking. “I forgive you. Today’s a day for forgiveness, it seems.”

He shifted Turbo’s leash from one hand to the other. “About the other night…do you remember what you meant by ‘Et tu, Brute’? You texted that.”

Sam trotted off from them and up to the porch, snuggling against his mom, ready to go inside and get warm. Turbo looked off into the woods, not seeming to notice the cold.

Somehow, Mia knew if she told the truth, nothing was going to be the same. A tiny, nearly incoherent fear-filled voice inside her was screaming that she needed to stop this. But even if she couldn’t put it into words, she knew what she was doing. Suddenly her throat loosened, and the words spilled out. “The night Ollie was born, after the accident, you were there. You held my hand because Brad couldn’t. And not just that night. So many other times too. Sometimes I swear you’re the only person in the world who really sees me. When I figured out it was you Stacey was talking about in the letter, it wasn’t just that you knew and didn’t tell me, learning that made me doubt… I don’t know…everything.”

She could see the pain her words caused, and that more than anything was why she let herself step in and press her lips against his. He was four or five inches taller, but on the tips of her toes, she could just reach his lips. And just like before, she liked it. She liked everything about it.

She closed her bare, cold hands over the sides of his face and opened her mouth fully to his. He had strong lips, and she could feel the stubble from one day’s growth of beard against her skin.

He smelled like the Minnesota woods, cedar and pine, and he tasted like the s’mores they’d had in front of the fire. She could taste the sugar and chocolate on his lips and tongue. Her head began to swim, and she wondered if it was a flashback to drunkenly kissing him, or if she wasn’t breathing. Light-headed or not, she couldn’t pull away. She needed his kiss like she needed air, and he was going to have to be the one to stop it.

Only he didn’t. His hands slipped into her hair, and he lowered his face to hers so that she didn’t have to stand on her tiptoes. His tongue met hers, and he pulled closer as if he needed her the same way she needed him.

If he never pulled away, if he’d stand out here kissing her till they froze, Mia wouldn’t complain. Kissing Ben felt more than just good. It felt right. Like she’d been traveling a long time and had finally landed exactly where she should have been all along. It was as if she could feel broken pieces of herself mending together, halves becoming whole.

And somehow, even though she couldn’t explain it, she knew he felt the same way.

Review

I have enjoyed each book in this series for the story but mostly for the dogs.  The series centers around a shelter in St Louis and the various employees and volunteers.  I love how the shelter is very proactive in getting pets adopted and roping in local celebrities to help in their mission.  It doesn’t hurt that some of those well known local names find love in several of these books.

This book is a little sadder than others at least to start.  It focuses on Mia who is a recent widow.  She has a 7 year old son, Ollie, and while she was about to divorce her husband he ended up dying unexpectedly.  Enter Ollie’s godfather, Ben, who has always had a thing for Mia yet a mixup in college created a new path for each of them.  Mia also has some not-so-nice inlaws that seem to think their son could do no wrong.  They are about to find out how wrong they are in that thought process.  While I’m not sure we truly find out their feelings once they know the truth, there is a hint of shock and perhaps it is an eye-opener.

Ben is a very caring man and it is very surprising that he is still single.  That could be due to his interest in Mia all these years, he could be battling some of his own demons about his life, or maybe no one else measured up to his standards.  I love how he takes an interest in a teenager and shows him how to be a kind and caring young man.

Then there are the dogs…we can’t forget them!  A crazy woman lets loose a pack of border collies (around 13 I think).  Mia becomes a foster “fail” when she falls in love with a mother and her puppy that are both deaf.  I loved it and how it really helped Ollie move forward past his dad’s death.

Overall this was a great story and I can’t wait to see who might be featured in the next book in this series.  We give it 4 paws up.

Review

Never count a woman out when it comes to defending herself!

There are several aspects of this story that I truly enjoyed – the fact that Kate was no shrinking violet in need of saving; Gary is not really a hero but he is trying; Tim and Will nearly steal the show as junior sleuths; the mystery of Mr. Wendell who is not quite who you think even when you think you have him figured out!

This story bounces back and forth between Kate and Gary’s POV.  Gary is filled with guilt over letting his last client die.  Kate is a bookworm in love with fictional characters (my kind of gal!).  Despite their history and background, these two make an intriguing couple.  While the book is light on a relationship other than friendship until near the end, you can feel the sparks and tension between the two until they give in to each other.  These two are supported by a wide cast – Marcus, Kate’s good friend; Tim and Will, two bookshop clients that want to solve a mystery, ah the joys of youth; Elaina and Ian, possibly star crossed lovers that create a little friction between each other to spice up the story; Percival, Gary’s coworker at the security firm; Ryan Delaney, a twist in the characters; and Great Aunt Rosalyn and her neighbor Penelope.  There are some other minor characters but the previous are the main characters we see the most.

While the story is complex and kept me guessing, the ending was left open.  The mystery was solved but I don’t think there was any real resolution between Kate and Gary.  This could be that there will be another book and it will become a series or at least a sequel.  I do think the story is engaging and there are some intriguing twists that make you think twice about various characters.

Overall we enjoyed it and give this book 4 paws up.

Review

Candles, an Island, and Murder – oh my!

I love reading cozies that have the protagonist in a career that is crafty and one that is intriguing.  Enter Stella and her candlemaking business.  She makes unique candles with handcrafted scents and seems to know what sort of scent would be best for various people.  I’d love to know what she would suggest for me.  She even teaches classes on candlemaking and I would have liked the book to have explored that just a little bit more, or added more details regarding the two classes that were taught in this book.

This mystery has a fair amount of characters but most of them are tied to a wedding that is taking place.  I think we meet about 7 characters that were townsfolk.  That helps when trying to figure out who might be the killer since it is most likely tied to the wedding and its guests.  Speaking of the murder – while I didn’t figure out the killer, I thought the author did a good job of throwing suspicion on various characters so that when the killer was revealed it was quite a surprise to me.  I might have suspected this character but didn’t know how deep the hatred ran and why.

There is also a potential love triangle between Stella, Andy, and Peter.  Andy has a girlfriend but I don’t think she is right for him.  Peter is the new journalist in town and seems interesting but you wonder how much is him or his career choice.  If I had to choose, I’m #TeamAndy because they just seem like they fit together plus they have been friends forever.  But we shall see how the author decides to work this out in future books.

I think this is going to be a good new series and we give this book 4 paws up.

Review

Not everyone is as they seem.  Talk about some surprises at the end of the book that will shake your beliefs about some of the characters.

I love these shorter cozies, lots of action and mystery to keep you guessing.  But just because it is shorter don’t count the book out because a lot happens and it will keep you guessing as to who is the killer, why, and what other secrets will be revealed.

I do have a love/hate relationship with Jolie, the protagonist.  Yes, she has her issues and she admits them, but she also does some really stupid things…like when someone is breaking into her house (picking the lock), she yells that the police are on their way.  Ummm, why not just let the police arrive and catch them in the act and arrest them?  But she has a very caring side of her when it comes to Mirabelle, a young woman with sight issues, and others around town.

I was very surprised when it came time to reveal the killer.  I was not expecting this character in the slightest.  It made sense and there are a few clues that might point you this way, but not many.

Overall we enjoyed this book and give it 4 paws up.

Review

What a way to start a new series – red herrings galore, hidden killers, and mysterious motives.  All of these lead to an unexpected ending.

Exotic pet sitter – someone has to do it and Belinda is up to the task.  While we learn a little bit about her past, she seems quite happy not being stuck in a traditional type job and is building up a pet sitting business for those pets that traditional pet sitters may not want to take on, like a ball python snake.  I can’t even imagine taking care of  snake, but I suppose it helps that Belinda’s father is a veterinarian and she probably grew up around various types of animals.

Belinda has just moved into a cottage on a larger estate in Greenwich and she is barely there a day when she discovers a dead body.  Most people would probably move out faster than the Energizer Bunny, but she takes it all in stride and starts to investigate alongside Stone the Fifth, the son of the manor.  I was surprised at how quickly Stone and Belinda seemed to connect to start investigating the murder, it seemed like that part of the story was rushed.  That said, Stone and Belinda make a great team and play well off of each other around potential suspects and witnesses.

Speaking of suspects….I think I briefly suspected the killer but not long enough for this character to stay in the “guilty box”.  In fact, I strongly suspected another character and was taken by surprise when the ending came about and the killer was revealed.  The author does a great job of throwing multiple characters under the bus as suspects and hiding the true one.

There is a little bit of potential romance between Belinda and Stone, but there is also another character, Jonas, that might come into play as well.  However, Jonas lives by her parents in upstate New York so not sure how that might work out considering the distance…but guess we will find out in the next book!

Overall we enjoyed this book and look forward to the second in this series.  We give this 4 paws up.

Synopsis

-Houston, 1961
Texas’ slickest politician loses his presidential bid to a good-looking naval hero from Massachusetts. President Kennedy wants to put a man on the moon, and the Freedom Riders are raising morale for local civil rights activists.

Sleepy backwater Houston finds itself short on air conditioning just when things are heating up. In a seedy downtown office, a well-dressed out-of-towner hires P.I. Harry Lark to tail two D.C. visitors looking to build NASA a space center.

The more Harry finds, the more he suspects he’s working for the wrong side, and vows to wash his hands of the case. Meanwhile, Harry’s twelve-year-old daughter Dizzy is puzzling over a mystery of her own—she’s running a lost-and-found out of a suburban garage and is unexpectedly hired to find a missing dad who’s supposed to be dead and buried.

When Harry’s client turns up dead in his office, and mobsters start hounding him for cash, Harry realizes he needs all the help he can get—even if it comes from his daughter. As Harry and Dizzy’s cases converge, one thing is clear: someone wants Houston to look like a lawless Wild West Cowtown.
Together, Harry and Dizzy are going to find out who.

Review

If you like gritty PI books set in the 1960s when private investigators were a different breed, then this is a book you will want to pick up and read.

This book has all the characteristics of a Sam Shade novel but add in a 12 year old girl that is channeling Nancy Drew, the hot city of Houston, and the mafia and this all sets the scene for some fascinating reading.

The book switches POV from Harry to Dizzy.   At first it was a little confusing until I understood the relationship between the two and because the story would jump around in time a day or two based on the POV.  The stories intertwine and I enjoyed how the stories merged into one and that despite the times, Harry did not discourage Dizzy from doing what interested her, even shooting guns. This is Texas after all!

The story also hits on racial issues as this is the beginning of desegregation and there are several scenes that highlight those fighting for equal rights.  Crooked politicians and the space race round out the plot lines in the book.

I was pulled into this story wondering how it was all going to play out and as the storylines merged, along with Harry and Dizzy’s interactions, I couldn’t wait for the climax and I was not disappointed.

Some of my favorite lines from the book:

“We still had plenty of vice and crime, of course, but it was the homegrown, loony Lone Star variety.”

“You pulled off Barbie’s head?” I asked. Further proof that my daughter was not a typical girl.

The mismatched file cabinets looked like they had been salvaged from Davy Jones’s locker.  There was something on the floor that resembled green carpet, but in places it had given up trying to cover the floorboards altogether.  The venetian blinds had slats missing and slats hanging at odd angles like drunken sailors.

“It’s like stirring up a nest of fire ants.  You’re bound to get stung, and it doesn’t matter how many ants you step on, there’ll be more ants.”

This was an engaging book and we give it 4 paws up.

Named 2016 Best Mystery Series by Texas Association of Authors.

When Madison Reynolds finds herself widowed and penniless before forty, she does the only thing she knows to do – she packs up her teenage twins and moves back home with her eighty-year-old grandmother. Life in The Sisters, Texas has not changed much since she’s been gone, but at least her best friend Genesis is there to soften the transition back into small-town life.

To make ends meet, Madison opens In a Pinch Temporary Services. Her first real client is Ronny Gleason, but when she shows up for the first day of work at the Gleason Poultry Farm, Madison makes a gruesome discovery. The dead body she finds belongs to Mr. Gleason. When a local man is arrested for murder, Madison takes on the job of proving his innocence. Even though she is not a private investigator, both mothers are desperate: Lucy Ngyen to clear her son’s name, and Madison to pay her bills. But as she begins asking questions around town, her interference is not welcome.

With a daughter determined to go back to Dallas, a son settling into small town life, a feisty grandmother who knows all the town gossip, bill collectors calling, and now someone trying to keep her silent, Madison has no time for re-kindling her high school crush with police chief Brash deCordova. She has her hands full just trying to stay alive.

If she survives her amateur investigation, Maddy has a decision to make. Will she go back to her life in Dallas, or will she build a new life here in The Sisters?

$0.99 KINDLE COUNTDOWN DEAL 6/19-25!

You know a book is going to be good when it starts off:

“Finding a dead body was never good.  Finding the dead body of your newest client – particularly on the first day of the job – was decidedly worse.”

Welcome to The Sisters, Texas.  Where rumors run rampant, small town bias is still alive, but where you will find some of the nicest people…well most of them anyway unless they are a killer!   Madison’s daughter, Bethanie, sums it up quite nicely:

“This is Juliet, the most boring town in the state of Texas.  Of course, there were more rumors. It is, after all, the favorite pastime of rednecks near and far.”

This story has so much going for it – small Texas town, dysfunctional/quirky characters, a killer on the loose, old loves, close friends, and family.  I quickly grew to like Madison and her best friend Genesis. They have the kind of relationship that everyone should have, a best friend that will go to the ends of the earth for you…and maybe even jail should you get caught doing something a little crazy!  Considering everything Madison has gone through, that friendship is one of the things that holds her together as she puts her life back together with her children.  Madison has flaws but I see great potential for growth in her character over the rest of the series.

The mystery was well written and I was quite surprised when the killer was revealed because I don’t think there were any (or very few) clues to point us in this character’s direction.   I have to say I will never look at a chicken quite the same way and learned things about raising chickens that I never knew.  Considering Madison’s job is running a sort of temp agency, I think she realizes that perhaps this isn’t the sort of career she wants to pursue full time.

There is the beginning of a potential relationship between Maddy and her crush from high school, Brash.  There are some assumptions on Maddy’s part regarding Brash which throw her for a loop until correct information is provided to her.

I also appreciated the history regarding the two towns and how they came to be in existence.  There was enough history to visualize and understand, but not so much that it detracted from the basic plot line.

There are a few things that I am predicting for the next book and eagerly await finding out if I am right or wrong.  We give this book 4 paws up and if you are looking for a cozy series, definitely check this one out.

Synopsis

What happens when doctor and patient find themselves in the same sinking boat, yet rowing in opposite directions—one clinging to the past, and the other unable to move beyond it?

Sam returns home from a business trip a day before his son’s thirteenth birthday to find his world cruelly shattered in one fell swoop. Initially thinking he can cope on his own, Sam finally seeks the help of Cynthia, an experienced therapist. What he doesn’t know is that Cynthia herself is trying to recover from a debilitating divorce and the sinister shadow of her ex-husband. In the midst of it all is Lily, Cynthia’s daughter, who harbors a secret that has the power to explode the lives around her.

Taut with tension and intensity, Dark Blossom explores what lies beneath the surface of the lives of apparently “normal” people.

Review

This is a suspense/thriller novel that while at times is predictable, the ending is not.

I can’t imagine what it would be like to return from a trip to find out that your family has been killed in an accident. That is what Sam find outs at the beginning of the book. Throughout the rest of the book, we see his interactions with Cynthia, a counselor/therapist, who is dealing with her own demons and a petulant daughter, Lily, that is rebelling against a tragic situation.

I was surprised at how much Cynthia let Lily get away with considering she is only 17. I would never have been allowed to act as she did to my parents. But time heals all wounds, along with honesty, as the pair discovers.

As Sam and Cynthia continue sessions and as Sam reveals a bit more each time, I felt something wasn’t quite right but did not know what the answer was in this situation…until the end. The ending throws quite a punch and was not one I expected. It explained a lot.

This story will take you on an emotional roller coaster ride. Enjoy the ride!

We give it 4 paws up.
