The Physicists’ Daughter: A Novel
Historical Fiction
Poisoned Pen Press (June 7, 2022)
Paperback ‏ : ‎ 352 pages

Synopsis

The Nazis are no match for the physicists’ daughter.

New Orleans, 1944

Sabotage. That’s the word on factory worker Justine Byrne’s mind as she is repeatedly called to weld machine parts that keep failing with no clear cause. Could someone inside the secretive Carbon Division be deliberately undermining the factory’s war efforts? Raised by her late parents to think logically, she also can’t help wondering just what the oddly shaped carbon gadgets she assembles day after day have to do with the boats the factory builds…

When a crane inexplicably crashes to the factory floor, leaving a woman dead, Justine can no longer ignore her nagging fear that German spies are at work within the building, trying to put the factory and its workers out of commission. Unable to trust anyone—not the charming men vying for her attention, not her unpleasant boss, and not even the women who work beside her—Justine draws on the legacy of her unconventional upbringing to keep her division running and protect her coworkers, her country, and herself from a war that is suddenly very close to home.

Review

While I love math, sometimes science was beyond me. I didn’t let that stop me from picking up this book and enjoying the heck out of it! Justine is a formidable character with her intellect and past experiences. She was raised well by her physicist parents and godmother. She has a keen curiosity and doesn’t stop when confronted with a puzzle. However, her parents were killed in an automobile accident and she has been on her own for a few years now. Since it is the WWII era, she is working in a factory on an assembly line but is able to do some welding when the machines break down. What she discovers is that it isn’t normal wear and tear but someone is trying to sabotage the plant.

Justine has never been one to make a lot of friends, but she befriends another woman at the plant, Georgette, who happens to also live in the same rooming house. Georgette may be from the bayou and not gotten past the eighth grade, but she has a thirst for knowledge and laps up the algebra homework Justine assigns her and reads science books until she understands the basics. Georgette helps Justine with normal interactions with others which can be a bit awkward for Justine.

There is also Justine’s godmother, Gloria, who is an intellect in her own respect but she sees conspiracies all around her. She won’t leave her house in fear that someone will come in and bug it and spy on her. But she has a heart of gold and helps Justine however she can in her quest for what the plant is manufacturing and what it could mean for the war efforts.

There are two mysterious characters, Fitz and Mudcat. What we know about them is that they are both trying to recruit Justine to work for their governments…but what governments do they represent? Are they good or bad guys? We know that one of them is from Germany so we have to assume he is trying to recruit her for his benefit and not her own. We are even told that he has convinced someone else in her department to assist him in gaining information and knowledge about what the plant is producing. We don’t know who this person is until near the end and I never would have suspected this character. As the truth unfolds it surprised me because it was not what I was suspecting and a few incidents led me down another path which was a dead end.

This was quite an enjoyable book from the math and science, social interactions, secrecy, and even perhaps a little paranoia kept the story moving forward and interesting. There are even some potential romantic situations and I loved the scenes in the dance club and could picture the club in my mind.

I am thrilled that there is going to be a follow-up book considering how it ended and can’t wait to read that one when it debuts.

We give this book 5 paws up.

When Leah Miller’s entire Amish family was murdered ten years ago, the person believed responsible took his own life. Since then, Leah left the Amish and joined the police force. Now, after another Amish woman is found murdered with the same MO, it becomes clear that the wrong man may have been blamed for her family’s deaths.

As Leah and the new police chief, Dalton Cooper, work long hours struggling to fit the pieces together in order to catch the killer, they can’t help but grow closer. When secrets from both of their pasts begin to surface, an unexpected connection between them is revealed. But this is only the beginning. Could it be that the former police chief framed an innocent man to keep the biggest secret of all buried? And what will it mean for Leah–and Dalton–when the full truth comes to light?

USA Today bestselling author Mary Alford keeps you guessing as two determined souls plumb the dark depths of the past in order to forge a brighter future–together.

This is the first book I have read by this author and now I’m wondering why! This Christian Suspense novel has everything I look for in a book: developed characters, fascinating backstory, a bit of mystery, a hint of romance, and action-packed scenes that will have you wondering if you can put the book down or if you will need to continue reading the book.

I haven’t read a book that included Amish characters in some time and I forgot how much I enjoy the simple life, slightly different language, and the close-knit ties they have in their communities. I have read about rumspringa for the teens and how that can influence their desire to stay in the Amish community or venture out on their own. The downside to this is that the teens can be easily influenced by western culture since it is very different from their own. We see that with several of the female characters that are taken in by the killer’s charm and don’t realize that what he is portraying is not right.

Leah is familiar with both worlds and is able to bridge the gap when needed. However, the death of her family dredges up memories when new girls are found murdered and notes are left behind for Leah. I wondered throughout the book who was behind all of this and I did start to figure it out but not until closer to the end when a few clues are provided. I still didn’t grasp the full impact of those clues until all was revealed. I thought Leah could be reckless when it came to her own safety at various times throughout the book, but thankfully Dalton, the new police chief, did his best to keep her safe. However, sometimes the killer had the jump on Leah and Dalton which just added to the tension in the story.

Dalton may be the new chief but he has another motive for his move to St. Ignatius. It is hinted at but we don’t find out the true reason until much later in the book. There are some twists regarding his secret and the outcome but you’ll have to read the book to find out what.

While this is a Christian-based book, the religious aspect is minor, but it brings in the faith that Leah and Dalton have that everything will turn out ok and that a higher power is watching over them.

This was a fantastic read and I will be investigating more of this author’s works. We give it 5 paws up.

Old Bones and Ice Cream Cones: Destiny Falls Mystery & Magic Series
Paranormal Cozy Mystery
6th in Series
Better Beginnings, Inc. (May 20, 2022)
Print length ‏ : ‎328 Pages

Synopsis

A boyfriend who’s missing. Or was. . . Or is. . . A boat full of old bones. A community ice cream social. A friend in trouble, a spiteful witch, and an angry villain. The mysteries and fun abound in Destiny Falls. Hayden, Latifa, and their family and friends are up for the excitement and adventure.

Old Bones and Ice Cream Cones follows the series format of combining two stories that blend into one. A murder mystery and the island mystery.

The Island Mystery: Hayden’s boyfriend Han is missing. But she swears she saw him zoom by in his car. She’d thought it was a surprise, and that he was home early from his secret service case. She was wrong. The surprise is that his signal isn’t pinging, and no one knows where he is. There appears to be black magic behind his disappearance. Can they learn who’s responsible and bring Han safely home?

The Murder Mystery: A pile of old bones is found in an ancient fishing boat. They could be tied to the disappearance of two young women years ago, back when many of the Destiny Falls people where in high school. Many of the citizens had bad history with the missing students. Do the bones belong to them, and what happened? Were the they murdered? And could the murderer be living among them?

Hayden and Latifa’s many adventures in Destiny Falls will keep you guessing with each book in this fun and intriguing series.

Review

Welcome back to Destiny Falls. This magical town is full of wonderment and you get to try and solve two mysteries while enjoying some ice cream and other treats in the process…or at least enjoy reading about them.

Hayden is settling into her role as a conduit on this island. She has a strong family circle around her and a handsome boyfriend. However, nothing is ever easy and there is always mischief from Nemmy or the likes. She doesn’t let that get her down and forges on; but as she learns from Gasper and others, she must have patience and not jump the gun on everything.

I enjoy so many different things about Destiny Falls from the library with the different themes, Vessie’s cafe, the interactions of the family and friends, and how the mysteries are cloaked and while you might have some of the pieces you don’t have them all. And we can’t forget the SCS – Secret Cat Society. This is made up of all the cats and Cleobella and now Bob the olm. They tend to go off on wild tangents that I would expect from a cat.  The humor sprinkled throughout adds to my enjoyment of this book and series.

I also enjoy watching the characters come into their own. They continue to grow a little more with each book and add additional layers to their personalities. I don’t know if I have a favorite character yet even though this is the 6th book. Each one is endearing in their own way.

We give this book 5 paws up.

Synopsis

From New England’s Storyteller, Steven Manchester, comes the nostalgia-filled sequel to Bread Bags & Bullies; a novel about growing up in a whacky family during the 1980s. Boom boxes, leg warmers, and Rubik’s Cubes—it’s all there. A hysterical walk down memory lane!

It’s the summer of 1984, a season of dodging lawn darts and chugging lemonade—or at least the discolored tap water Ma tried to disguise as lemonade.

Growing up is never easy, no matter what era you do it in. For generations, teenagers have suffered peer pressure, bullying, fear of rejection, and a sadistic obstacle course of one unexpected challenge after the next. Three brothers, Wally, Herbie, and Cockroach, learn that the past can be filled with questions—even shame and regret—while the future might be shrouded in worry and fear. But staying in the moment, now that’s where the sweet spot is.

Review

This story took me back to my high school days and many times I found myself nodding and reminiscing about the music (which I still listen to), the stores, and just life in general in the 1980s.

I have not read the book that this is the sequel for, but I don’t think that is necessary. I enjoyed Walt, Herbie, and Alphonse (aka Cockroach) from their interactions with each other, their parents, and how they dealt with life in general. This is a good coming-of-age story as well as we see Herbie start to spread his wings more and Cockroach, well, he is a hot mess but a smart kid too. I had to laugh at how their mom kicked them out of the house and said to be back when the street lights come on. I think many can relate to this if they are like me. And the trip to the S&H Green Stamp store? What a flashback! I think my first iron was from this store.

Who remembers lawn darts? Those things could take an eye out or GI Joe might become a mangled mess once these boys get done with him.

This story is about love, memories, friendships, and family. The author is a masterful storyteller and you won’t be disappointed if you decide to pick up this book.

We give it 5 paws up.

Review

I have read multiple books by this author and they have time travel down to a science. Their stories weave together seamlessly and I get lost in the historical time periods imagining what it might be like to live back then.

Roxie is an amazing singer and piano player but is overlooked in 2019 because there are so many singers out there. By some weird twist of fate, she ends up in 1925 which is the perfect decade for her voice. However, how she gets there and what she encounters are out of this world. She isn’t the first to go through this portal and probably won’t be the last.

I loved how Roxie tried to adapt to the 1920s and I don’t envy her having to deal with the neanderthal mentality of some of the men. This was right around the time that women got the vote, but that doesn’t mean that men didn’t try and keep them down. I was rather disgusted with Frankie who thought he owned Roxie just because he gave her a place to sleep, food to eat, and clothing. Of course, he held her prisoner so that didn’t help. But it did help Roxie meet the man of her dreams, Jake.

Jake and Roxie don’t have an easy relationship because of some baggage on Jake’s side and the whole truth of Roxie’s situation. This doesn’t stop them from admitting their attraction to one another and trying to figure out a relationship. It won’t be an easy road but true love always wins.

While this story is complete, there are some things that I don’t think were resolved or finalized but probably will be in the next book. But that is the way to end a novel, leaving us wanting more. Plus I don’t think we know all of Dr. Hall’s story or perhaps there is more to come for her. If you have read any of this author’s earlier books, you will remember the clinic for women and children in New York. It might have been a different time and doctor, but something resonated with me regarding this clinic.

If you are into time-travel novels and romance, you definitely need to read this book. We give it 5 paws up.

Review

This story about Gwen could be a great teacher to young children to be thankful for what they have instead of what they don’t.

Gwen has a lunch that doesn’t thrill her but at least she has a lunch because some children do not. She throws a tantrum when she doesn’t get a toy, her jacket isn’t washed, and her mom won’t help her with all of her math homework. Let’s just say Gwen needs an attitude adjustment. But by the end of the book, she realizes that she is wrong and maybe she should be thankful for what she does have in her life.

I enjoyed the lessons that Gwen was being taught and the illustrations defined the scene quite well. The pages are colorful and will hold a child’s attention.

We give this book 5 paws up.

Synopsis

Small-town romantic suspense from USA Today bestselling author, Ashley Farley

Casey Hobbs has never met her father. She doesn’t know his identity or where he lives or whether he has children. She’s spent the past three years at her mother’s sickbed, watching cancer eat away her organs and their bank account. Upon her mother’s death, Casey receives a letter containing clues about her mysterious father. With nothing left for her in New York, Casey packs her meager belongings in her mother’s old convertible and heads off in search of Daniel Love.

Casey finds the Virginia mountains charming and the small town of Lovely quaint. Buying time while she determines how best to approach her father, Casey accepts a job as a graphic designer with Foxtail Farm, a boutique winery conveniently located next door to Love-Struck Vineyard. On her first day, she discovers her new boss is at war with the Love children, Casey’s half-siblings.

Weeks pass before Casey meets her father. Casey reminds Daniel of her mother, the true love of his life, and he welcomes her with open arms. But Casey’s half-siblings want nothing to do with her. The stakes are high, and they want her gone. They’ll stop at nothing to protect the family dynasty.

Review

I am never disappointed by Ashley’s books and this one is no exception. It is a spinoff series of the Hope Springs series and features Ollie and Fiona and a whole new crew of characters including some shady ones from the Love family.

We meet Casey who has ended up in Lovely searching for her father after her mother’s passing. He is also the father of some scoundrels that are harassing Ollie and the land she bought next to their vineyard because she won’t sell it to them. Needless to say, this is going to cause a bunch of friction between many of the characters because Ollie has a hard time separating the bad seeds from the whole family.

I loved the start of this new series. It was nice to revisit some characters but also watch them come into their own and create a new adventure for themselves. The book focuses mainly on Casey but we also get a peek into Ollie and Fiona’s life with this new vineyard. Ollie does seem distracted throughout the book and that could be due to the Love brothers that seem to think that bullying will get them what they want. However, some of her reactions were over the top considering she didn’t stop to ask questions of Casey and what she was or wasn’t doing with her father now that they had met. Hopefully, she calms down in future books because holding onto that much anger does not do her any good.

I enjoyed watching the interactions between Casey and her new family. While she gets along great with her father and brother Sheldon, the other three siblings are spoiled entitled brats. Tables are turned on them by their father and I enjoyed watching them squirm. I can’t wait to see how this progresses in future books.

The synopsis says that this book is romantic suspense and I don’t think it is, at least not the suspense part. To me, it is more family drama than anything else. That doesn’t mean this is a bad book, just don’t expect any real suspense (or at least not the kind I am used to reading).

We give this 5 paws up and can’t wait for the next book in this series, Blind Love.

Synopsis

She has one last chance to prove she chose the right course for her life.

In 1908, young Dorothy Tuckerman chafes under the bland, beige traditions of her socialite circles. Only the aristocracy’s annual summer trips to the Greenbrier Resort in West Virginia spark her imagination. In this naturally beautiful place, an unexpected romance with an Italian racecar driver gives Dorothy a taste of the passion and adventure she wants. But her family intervenes, sentencing Dorothy to the life she hopes to escape.

Thirty-eight years later, as World War II draws to a close, Dorothy has done everything a woman in the early twentieth century should not: she has divorced her husband—scandalous—and established America’s first interior design firm—shocking. Now, Dorothy returns to the Greenbrier with the assignment to restore it to something even greater than its original glory. With her beloved company’s future hanging in the balance and brimming with daring, unconventional ideas, Dorothy has one more chance to give her dreams wings or succumb to her what society tells her is her inescapable fate.

Based on the true story of famed designer Dorothy Draper, The Greenbrier Resort is a moving tale of one woman’s quest to transform the walls that hold her captive.

Review

I know I am not going to do this book justice with my review, but this book is AMAZING! The book captured the old-world elegance of the early 1900s when everyone was much more proper, women were presented to society, and marriages were arranged, but sometimes the heart falls in love with another person or place. That is the case for Dorothy Draper, an infamous American Designer from 1923 until the 1960s.

I do love a good historical fiction book about a real person from history. I learn so much about the time and the person. While it is fiction, many of the basic facts are true such as her career and the company she created, and her marriage, divorce, and children. I always love to read the author’s notes when it comes to a book like this to learn where they drew their information, what is fact vs fiction, and what twists they added to make it an intriguing story. If nothing else, this type of book always has me searching the internet for more details about the main character.

The early 1900s was an elegant time where women were dressed to the nines, men were in suits, and people would vacation for months at a time at resorts like The Greenbriar which is depicted in this novel. I loved reading about the dances, races, picnics, and so much more that were part of their daily lives.

The fictional part of this story is a love connection between Dorothy and Enzo during the summer of 1908. They don’t end up together (well because he is not real) but the story is beautifully told and while I suspected the ending, I almost thought it wasn’t going to be as I imagined due to some other factors that came into play.

I admire Dorothy and what she stood for and really pioneered the way for women designers. I loved that she wanted color and for a room to be fun and relaxing and not dark and dreary as The Greenbriar was prior to her makeover after WWII. There are times when Dorothy acted like a child, but I understood her frustration with life and what was expected of her as a woman at that time. I thank her and all of the other women that came before me that made an effort to make sure that we were heard and not taken lightly or dismissed out of hand.

I had a hard time putting this book down and highly recommend it and give it 5 paws up.

In 1964, a group of scientists called the Los Alamos Five came close to finishing a nuclear energy project for the United States government when they were abruptly disbanded. Now the granddaughter of one of those five scientists, aerospace engineer Elinor Mitchell, discovers that she has highly sensitive information on the project in her possession–and a target on her back.

SNAP agent and former Navy cryptologist Kekoa Young is tasked with monitoring Elinor. This is both convenient since she’s his neighbor in Washington, DC, and decidedly inconvenient because . . . well, he kind of likes her.

Natalie Walters sucks you into the global race for space domination in this perfectly paced second installment of her SNAP Agency romantic suspense series.

Fatal Code is reminiscent of cold war spy thrillers and riveted me to the page as I rooted for Kekoa and Elinor to expose secrets, survive danger, and fall in love.” — Elizabeth Goddard, bestselling author of the Rocky Mountain Courage series

Action-packed with loveable characters, swoony men, and despicable antagonists…a winning combination.

Not having read the first book in this series, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. But diving in I discovered a whole new world with a team of agents that had each other’s backs and complemented each other with their various skill sets. Kekoa is haunted by the death of his brother fourteen years ago. He blames himself and when you hear the whole story it might just break your heart. However, this causes problems within his family primarily because he thinks that everyone blames him for the accident. It takes some strong conversations with his father and family to realize that he has been blaming himself for something that was beyond his control.

I think I have found a new favorite character, Elinor! I love her nerdy geeky side especially when it comes to her t-shirts and jokes. They cracked me up throughout the whole book. I also appreciated the love for her grandfather and her interest in ciphers that he taught her so many years ago. While she isn’t trusting of everyone, she seems to be a little naive when it comes to other people and their motives. Luckily, The SNAP Agency is on her side, especially Kekoa. She won’t know it at first but he believes in her innocence despite what the data reveals.

There is a historical aspect that brings in Los Alamos and the Hydrogen bomb. While most of us might know a little bit about it, the details help expand our minds and imagine what the men went through creating a device that could destroy the world. These men went to great lengths to protect that knowledge but someone has discovered their secret and will obtain it at all costs. I was shocked when all of the pieces fell into place with who was involved and why. I never would have guessed and it is true that sometimes you can’t trust anyone around you.

Outside of the action piece, there is the romance between Kekoa and Elinor. It is not a fast-moving relationship and they take it very slow which I enjoyed because it is nice to see people getting to know one another before jumping into the deep end. But that could be because they both had a few things to work through before they could come together. They both bring different nuances to the relationship and it takes their interactions to a new level.

I could not put this book down and kept wondering what could possibly happen next, would Elinor figure out what her grandfather was hiding in his journals, and would Kekoa find forgiveness?

This book can be read on its own, but I would highly recommend reading the first book, Lights Out, to truly understand the SNAP team and their relationships with each other.

We give this book 5 paws up.

Synopsis

A gym nemesis pushes a fitness influencer to the max in Amy Lea’s steamy debut romantic comedy.

Curvy fitness influencer Crystal Chen built her career shattering gym stereotypes and mostly ignoring the trolls. After her recent breakup, she has little stamina left for men, instead finding solace in the gym – her place of power and positivity.

Enter firefighter Scott Ritchie, the smug new gym patron who routinely steals her favorite squat rack. Sparks fly as these ultra-competitive foes battle for gym domination. But after a series of escalating jabs, the last thing they expect is to run into each other at their grandparents’ engagement party.

In the lead up to their grandparents’ wedding, Crystal discovers there’s a soft heart under Scott’s muscled exterior. Bonding over family, fitness, and cheesy pick-up lines, she just might have found her swolemate. But when a photo of them goes viral, savage internet trolls put their budding relationship to the ultimate test of strength.

Review

This book was quite a surprise and I can’t tell you how much I enjoyed this story. I could relate to Crystal as a curvy woman and I applauded her career choice and the people that she was helping find a better fitness routine. Then she meets Scott who acts like a neanderthal when they first bump into each other. I loved Scott’s explanation once they got to know each other, that he was just bowled over by her and lacked the words to say something. I love it when a guy gets tongue-tied!

I enjoyed watching the relationship between Crystal and Scott grow. It wasn’t without its challenges and misunderstandings but for the most part, they worked through them. But there wouldn’t be some tension in the book without hurt feelings and disagreements. But these incidents are what help them grow as a couple and learn to navigate feelings and expectations. It also helps Crystal find her true path and what is or isn’t working for her as a fitness trainer and promoter.

They both care about their grandparents, so when his grandfather and her grandmother connect and end up engaged it forces them together until they find that rhythm together. You could say it strengthens the relationship that they embark upon.

There is a touching moment when Crystal confronts her father and his continual pestering for her to find a job. They are two different worlds when it comes to what defines success and neither is right or wrong, they just see things differently. However, there are some things that Crystal learns about her father that she didn’t know before which enables her to understand where he is coming from. The moment also helps her father realize that maybe she does have things together, more than he realizes.

This book will make you laugh out loud and perhaps get a little sentimental too at different times. Overall, I loved the book and can’t wait to see what the author comes out with next. We give it 5 paws up.
