Tour Schedule

The Pitcher

“I never knew I had an arm until this guy called out, “Hey you want to try and get a ball in the hole, sonny?” I was only nine, but mom said, “come on, let’s play.” This Carney guy with no teeth and a fuming cigarette hands me five blue rubber balls and says if I throw three in the hole we win a prize. He’s grinning, because he took mom’s five bucks and figures a sucker is born every minute. That really got me, because we didn’t have any money after Fernando took off, and he only comes back to beat up mom and steal our money. So I really wanted to get mom back something, you know, for her five bucks.”

A boy with a golden arm but no money for lessons. A mother who wants to give her son his dream before she dies. A broken down World Series pitcher who cannot go on after the death of his wife. These are the elements of The Pitcher. A story of a man at the end of his dream and a boy whose dream is to make his high school baseball team. In the tradition of The Natural and The Field of Dreams, this is a mythic story about how a man and a boy meet in the crossroads of their life and find a way to go on. You will laugh and you will cry as The Pitcher and Ricky prepare for the ultimate try out of life.

Review

This is a great book!  It is about one man’s past, one boy’s dreams and a mother’s hope.  But along with those are lessons to be learned by the characters and the reader alike.  For Ricky, if you want something bad enough work for it and don’t let anyone stand in your way.  For Maria, don’t be too proud to accept help.  For the Pitcher, life could be a lot worse and don’t hide yourself away from the world.

These three main characters have a lot to learn from life and becoming involved with each other enables the characters to learn and grow and become better people.  There were times when each of the characters gave up, but another came along to push them so that they would see their value and worth.  I thought this book was motivating and is definitely worth reading!  Sometimes I thought that the story was set in the past, but it is set in modern times as evidenced by music, television and politics.

This book is a Junior Library Guild Selection for Fall and well deserving of that selection.  I think everyone could learn something from this book and that isn’t something I say all the time.  We give this book 4 1/2 paws

The Great Recession. Reality TV. Luxury cosmetics. And a basset hound named Botox. What do all these things have in common?

They’re all essential story components in BEAUTY SECRETS, a sexy romantic comedy novel, written in a style best described as “Jennifer Weiner meets E. L. James.”

Amanda Brown is a high-flying cosmetics executive for Revina Corporation, the oldest and most venerable cosmetics company in America. She comes from a good “old money” family, she went to Swarthmore, and she lives in a beautiful penthouse apartment in NYC’s Meatpacking District. But she’s only successful on the surface—-like many New Yorkers, she’s also financially overextended. Her parents are dead, her trust fund is gone, and when the Great Recession hammers her company, like millions of people across America she suddenly finds her job hanging by a thread.

Enter George Watson, a hedge-fund manager and self-made man from the Midwest who swoops in from Indiana to rebuild Revina Corporation from the ground up. Even if he fired everyone else at the company, he decides to keep Amanda on for her expertise. The two of them are from different worlds, and they can’t stand each other. But that doesn’t stop them from having wild no-holds-barred sex on their first meeting—-for reasons neither of them fully understand.

But this is no ordinary corporate takeover, and the unlikely romance between George and Amanda is no ordinary love story. It involves corporate greed, undercover investigative reporters, a sleazy reality TV producer who puts George and Amanda’s sexual relationship on national television, dark family secrets—-and a dog named Botox.

Murder at the Maples (A Flora Lively Mystery: Book 1)
Mirrorball Books (September 16, 2013)
Genre: Cozy mystery
Number of Pages: 274

Synopsis

A tragic death. A reluctant sleuth. A childhood prank that went horribly wrong.

When Flora Lively inherits her father’s business she’s totally out of her depth. Shakers Removals is in trouble, and manager Marshall isn’t helping one bit – the ex-pat American delights only in winding her up. But Flora has other things on her mind, like Joy: surrogate grandmother and resident of the Maples Retirement Village. When Joy’s pet pug has a brush with death, Flora is pulled into a series of bizarre incidents at the Maples, where fear is starting to take hold.

Could harmless old Mr. Felix really be the boy from Joy’s past, determined to exact his revenge, or is it Joy’s guilty mind playing tricks on her? And what about the Captain’s death? Accidents happen, even to the most careful people, but Flora’s not convinced the old man simply fell down the stairs … Playing detective seemed like a good idea at first, but before long Flora realises the stakes are far higher than either she or Joy imagined.

Full of warmth and humour, this gripping puzzle will appeal to fans of M. C. Beaton and Edie Clare.

Review

Murder at the Maples is a cozy set in England and is about a moving company that seems to specialize in moving seniors from their homes into a retirement community.  Running the company after her father’s death, Flora has some big shoes to fill and has a manger, Marshall, that while related somehow, is from the US and sees business differently than Flora.  Not that either is right or wrong, they just have opposing viewpoints on how to run the company.  Flora has a degree in psychology and it comes in handy when dealing with the seniors that are moving into the Maples retirement home, in fact she has befriended Joy and is maybe a little too invested in the happenings at the home.  However, this comes to be a benefit when seniors start dying and Flora starts questioning what is really happening.

This book did take a little for me to get in to, but once I did and fell into a rhythm, I couldn’t wait to read what might come next.  Some of the “evil” characters were rather obvious to me, but may not be to everyone.  I think I knew that they were bad in some respect but didn’t know all of the details as to why.  It is a good start to a new series and we give it 4 paws.

My Sister’s Reaper by Dorothy Dreyer

Sixteen-year-old Zadie’s first mistake was telling the boy she liked she could bring her dead sister back to life. Her second mistake was actually doing it.

When Zadie accidentally messes with the Reaper’s Rite that should have claimed her sister Mara, things go horribly wrong. Mara isn’t the same anymore—Zadie isn’t even sure she’s completely human, and to top it off, a Reaper is determined to collect Mara’s soul no matter what. Now Zadie must figure out how to defeat her sister’s Reaper, or let Mara die … this time for good.

Excerpt

“Mara?”

Her door was cracked, flickering candlelight illuminating the frame. I slowed, wondering why she had lit candles in her room. I heard a small sound, a tiny lyrical noise coming from inside her bedroom. My chest felt heavy. I eased the door open and peeked inside.

Mara was crouched in the corner, her knees pulled against her chest, surrounded by a crude semi-circle of flickering candles. She was humming, creepy and off-key. It wasn’t a tune I recognized.

I took tentative steps into the room. “Mara, what are you doing?”

The humming continued. I wondered if she even heard me.

Lilura’s words haunted me. The curse. The Reaper’s Rite. The other night, Mara had said someone was coming for her. Was there really someone—or something—after my sister? Was she sitting in the corner hiding or trying to protect herself?

I turned away from my sister and headed toward the door. Before I reached it, it slammed shut. I stared at the door, my heart thundering in my chest. Mara’s eerie song floated in the air, prompting me to turn and face her.

“Mara?” I whispered. I didn’t know what I was going to say, but I had to try. “You … you don’t have to be afraid. You’re not alone. I can help you. I know what it’s like.”

She stopped humming, jerked her head up, and locked her wide eyes with mine.

“Oh, really? He’s pissed and it’s because of something you did!”

Suddenly, the flames from the candles shot up in straight lines, tickling the ceiling and casting the room in a menacing glow. Mara sat unmoving. Her shadow morphed on the wall behind her, the dark pattern swelling like a macabre shadow puppet, until I stared at the silhouette of a hooded creature carrying a spear. I knew it was impossible, but I felt the shadow turn and look at me. It swept its spear across the violet walls. No, not a spear. A scythe.

A scream stuck in my throat. I ran to the door and turned the knob, my hand slipping from it a few times as panic overtook me. I glanced over my shoulder. The flames slowly sank back to their original size. Mara’s gaze slipped to the floor, and she began to hum again. This time my grip was better, and I threw the door open and ran to my room.

Excerpt

Molly had claimed me the night she met me. The night she looked into my eyes and I could read her broken soul like a book you read over and over even, even though you know the story by heart. She claimed me the first time I heard that amazing voice she had, singing songs that were meant for the sad and lonely. She claimed me the night she took a chance on a guy she barely knew and agreed to be my friend. Molly had claimed me with the first look, the first breath, the first word. She had set up camp in my head and my heart, and I had no plans of doing a damn thing about it. I would help Molly get over the mountain of issues she felt she had, because she was worth it; she would always be worth it. I didn’t know all about Molly’s past; there were holes in some of her stories, but I didn’t want Molly’s past; I wanted her future. And no matter how long it took, how hard I had to fight, Molly would eventually be mine. One day, I would be lucky enough to wake up next to this woman, who I was quickly realizing, I couldn’t live without. – Logan Wade

Excerpt

Natasha sighed. “You don’t need to stay until Detective Bentley comes.”

His eyebrows rose. “You want to be alone with the detective?”

Natasha grabbed a glass from the cupboard and filled it with water from the door of the fridge. “I just don’t want Jace and Lily to wait too long.” She turned to face him, taking a sip of the cold water.

Tony held her gaze with his warm stare and edged a step closer. “I wanted to make sure that you’re okay.”

“I’m fine.” Natasha clutched the glass in her palm. “I can take care of myself.” Why was she lying to him? She tried to shoo him away, when she really wanted to beg him to stay until Alex was apprehended and maybe even after that.

Tony set the water bottles on the counter. “Oh, I don’t doubt you can take care of yourself, but maybe it’s time to let someone else help.”

He took two more steps toward her. She could smell his PS cologne. She’d given him a bottle the first year they were married and told him it was her favorite scent. The fragrance brought back tender memories she wanted to displace and plugging her nose right now might be a little awkward. Natasha raised the glass to her lips to try to block the tempting aroma and create some distance between them. Why was Tony still wearing the same brand?

“What if I want to take care of you?” Tony asked.

Sounds wonderful. She took a long drink, but it didn’t quench the heat in her face.

Tony took the glass from her fingers and set it on the counter. “What if I want to take care of you?” he repeated quietly. He gently took hold of her palm and studied her face for the correct answer.

“I think you’re too late,” Natasha whispered, studying his pressed cotton shirt to avoid his handsome face. Her hand tingled. How could he still affect her like this?

Tony tilted her chin up with his free hand. “Look in my eyes and say that again.”

Synopsis

Root for divorced dad Austin Carr, a funny, oversexed scamp who’ll use anything and everything to get his kids back.

Divorced father Austin Carr wakes up every day in a beat-up camper, parked on someone else’s private property. Why? Because his alimony and child support payments were established by New Jersey’s family court system when his income was double, and for the last two years he has failed to earn the legally mandated monthly nut. He’s had his savings drained, his Maxima repossessed, his salary attached, and his visiting rights suspended. He bought the twelve-year-old Chevy pick-up with the rusty camper for $800 last month because another landlord tossed his butt in the street. Will stretching the rules, his own morals, and the boundaries of common sense raise the cash needed to get his kids back? Or will his big mouth and bad behavior set him up for a nasty double-cross? Find out if Austin can redeem himself and win back his children.

Excerpt

My name’s Austin Carr. I’m a stockbroker. The slick expensive business cards in my wallet say I’m a Senior Financial Consultant for Shore Securities, Inc., Members of the American Association of Securities Dealers, but I’m really just a salesman and I work for myself. Straight commission. If I don’t sell, I don’t eat.

“Another margarita, Luis.”

A lot of people in my line of work call themselves investment counselors. They wear two-thousand-dollar Italian suits, carry alligator attaché cases, think and talk about themselves as professionals like doctors and lawyers. In truth, we’re closer kin to used car dealers, only more dangerous because losing your life savings is a tad worse than getting stuck with a leaky transmission.

It’s hard to sport illusions about yourself when you live in a camper. And I’ve always treated my clients with honesty, to the point of aggravating every sales manager I’ve ever had. Even so, keeping my self respect, I have not been thinking about this job in a favorable light. In fact, in the years since the market crashed, ruining my sales numbers, my finances, and more recently, any chance of being with my two children, Ryan and Beth, I’ve been wracking my brain, trying desperately to figure another way to earn a living.

“Another double?” Luis says.

“Por favor.”

Although no solution to my dilemma has yet presented itself, I’ve discovered it helps to ruminate in a positive setting: Luis’s Mexican Grill on Broad Street in Branchtown. The decor reminds me of home, Los Angeles, and Luis has an authentico Mexican chef, Cruz. Best of all, Luis works the bar himself every day.

“You are not going to work today?” Luis says.

“Careful, Luis. Your query borders on insult. In fact, I have already called work, only to discover that my monster client delayed our scheduled discourse until this afternoon. I stayed here this morning to spend some quality time with you and Cruz.”

“I recommend this be your final cocktail,” Luis says.

Dealing with numbers all the time is an ache in the ass, definitely, but my biggest problem with being a stockbroker is having to spend all day on the money machine, dialing for dollars, calling busy people at the wrong time, apologizing because the back office screwed up a check, downplaying the risks of an investment to exaggerate the benefits, dancing investors from one asset to another so I can take part of their principal as commission. To be a successful stockbroker, you have to be slightly larcenous.

I lick the wet salt from the rim of my still empty margarita glass. Of course I never worried about little things like morality while I was netting five- to ten-thousand dollars a month. It’s only been since my income dropped by more than half, and mainly since I lost physical contact with my children that I search for the social significance of securities sales.

Review

I was interested in this book because at one time I worked in the securities business.  I wasn’t working with customers and their portfolios, but I was involved with other aspects so I wondered how this story would play out.  Austin is a down on his luck broker living out of a truck with a camper and has a restraining order against him until he pays his back child support….but that doesn’t stop him from trying to see his kids anyway.  Now his biggest customer is at death’s door and his “wife” wants to move some money into her name so that she is not left in the cold when he dies.  Yeah, she isn’t married to him.  Of course she is a beautiful red-head and Austin is in lust.  He thinks that this is going to be an easy (or at least easier) thing to do as long as she is willing to do things that aren’t 100% legal.  Of course the story doesn’t end there and I don’t want to giveaway the twists and turns, many that threw me for a loop!  I did not see many of them coming.  The writing was good and the storyline interesting, but it didn’t grab me like other books.  I did still enjoy the book because I was definitely surprised at some of the twists that occurred.  I can’t say too much because that would give it away..so you’ll just have to get a copy for yourself, or enter to win the copy I am giving away at the end of this post!

A Bargained-For Bride by Marcia Lynn McClure (Novella)

Excerpt

“You’re the sweetest girl in Mourning Dove Creek, you know?” Jack mumbled as he paused in kissing Jilly a moment.

Jilly smiled. “And you’re the handsomest man in Mourning Dove Creek, you know,” she flirted in return.

Jack smiled. “I do know,” he said.

Jilly giggled. Jack Taylor was so predictable—and a little conceited. He really did think he was the handsomest man in Mourning Dove—and he was, for the most part.

Secretly, however, if Jilly ever allowed herself to be completely honest about it (which she tried to avoid), there was one other man in Mourning Dove who always crossed her mind when the subject of the handsomest man in town arose. Yet there was no lingering on thinking of that man—no sirree! Not for a moment! Not for any reason—ever. And so Jilly just kept telling Jack that he was the handsomest man in Mourning Dove Creek. Besides, it was almost true—being that the other man lived outside of town and not right in town the way Jack did

Egypt Rising

Some ancient secrets should remain buried.

An American teenager in Cairo finds herself in the middle of the Egyptian revolution fleeing militant Islamic extremists. She leads her worst enemy and the boy she thinks about much too often on the adventure of a lifetime. When she discovers an ancient artifact that was buried for thousands of years, she learns that very powerful people will stop at nothing, including murder, to learn the secrets of a long-dead civilization.
