Review

This new cozy series really pulled me in and kept me guessing until the end.

I really liked Ellie’s character. Part of it is probably her age, she is around 50, but the other part is that she realized that she needed a change from the disaster of her life and her soon to be ex-husband. She was lucky that an aunt remembered her and the good times they had when she was young and left her entire estate to Ellie. This came at an opportune time, but not everything is as they think. Aunt Susie was murdered, but they don’t know who, how, or why. Then, Ellie is threatened, and this makes her even more determined to figure out who is behind everything. And as it is with most cozies, she tends to put herself in harm’s way when trying to uncover the truth.

I loved the paranormal side of this book. While we don’t really how HOW it happened, Ellie is able to talk to Cleo and Lola, her new pets. Apparently, this was something they could do with her aunt as well. Perhaps it is an inherited trait? Cleo and Lola make the book very interesting with their personalities. Cleo is very bossy, which isn’t too surprising since she is a cat. Lola is laid back and likes to bark at everything, and I do mean everything.

I also liked Ellie’s friend, Mia, from her old town. Mia comes to town to help Ellie, but there is more to the story that we don’t find out until near the end of the book. I suspected the truth long before it was revealed.

The mystery was engaging. There are many suspects but only one killer. I never guessed who it was until right before it was revealed, and I mean right before…like sentences!

This is going to be a fun series in this small northeastern town. I can’t wait to visit again and see what the gang is up to.

We give this book 5 paws up.

Synopsis

The little white house on Main Street in Buffalo Springs, Arkansas, is the only home Jackson Nelson has ever known. With college behind him and both his sisters back in town to look after their aging parents, Jackson knows now is the time to make his big move. All he’s ever wanted is to move to New York and lead the high-stakes life of a real estate investor. He’s determined to leave town right after Christmas and never look back.

Cindy Kline has never had a real home or a real Christmas. Abandoned by her father and raised by an unfit mother, Cindy thought she had finally found the family she always wanted when the man of her dreams asked her to marry him; but when his Navy SEAL helicopter went down in a fiery crash before their wedding, Cindy had nothing left to keep her in sunny California. Packing her meager belongings into her old, beat-up car, Cindy drives straight to Buffalo Springs and to the only real friend she’s ever had – Andi Nelson. With Christmas around the corner, Andi, Jackson, and the whole Nelson family convince Cindy to stay through the holidays even finding her a job that may turn out to be a real career.

Just when Cindy is beginning to get into the Christmas spirit, her life is once again up-ended – this time by a series of break-ins and the news that her dangerous father may be lurking nearby. Cindy has no idea that her father’s mysterious past will put her life in jeopardy, and Jackson has no idea that the bright lights of New York are but a flickering flame when it comes to the sparks of the heart.

“And unto you a child is born!” The child actor belted out the play’s most robust line with all the enthusiasm he could muster.

It was all Cindy could do not to jump to her feet and applaud. She laughed and clapped along with the rest of the audience. When the play was over, she went with the Nelson family to the town drug store that boasted an old-fashioned ice cream parlor and soda fountain in the back of the store. The proprietor had kept the doors open late to welcome the theatergoers.

“What would you like?” Jackson asked as Cindy eyed the many choices written on the blackboard.

“There are too many to choose just one.”

Jackson laughed. “Andi is partial to anything with peanut butter, and Helena always goes for something super sweet and fruity like cherry or raspberry. Mama likes plain old chocolate.”

She looked at Jackson. “And what do you like, Jackson?”

She saw his expression falter for just a moment, and a curtain of pink danced across his features, reminiscent of the curtains that closed at the end of the show. He blinked and just as quickly as the odd look appeared, it disappeared, and he broke into a wide grin.

“I always go for a good, old-fashioned root beer float with vanilla ice cream.”

“Would you believe, I’ve never had a root beer float?”

The look he gave her was one of exaggerated shock. “What? That might be the most un-American thing I’ve ever heard.” He clutched at his chest. “A shot to the heart.”

Cindy laughed, and Andi inserted herself between them to grab some extra napkins from the top of the ice cream display case.

“Is this guy bothering you?” she asked with a mock scowl.

Cindy shook her head. “Not at all. This has been one of the best nights of my life, and I’m going to top it off with my very first root beer float.”

Andi smiled. “I think that’s a great idea.”

On their turn, Jackson ordered for them both then reached for his wallet to pay, but Cindy put her hand on his arm.

“Jackson, no, I can’t let you do that.”

“Why not?”

“Because I can pay for my own ice cream. You all have been so generous already.”

“Sorry, Cindy, but my daddy would skin me alive if he heard that I allowed a female to pay for her own ice cream.”

She frowned and said in a firm voice, “Jackson, this isn’t a date. I can pay for my own ice cream.”

Again, she saw his face redden. “I never said it was a date, and you should accept an act of kindness when presented with one.”

The cashier cleared her throat, and Cindy realized they were holding up the line. Embarrassed for drawing attention, she said, “You’re right. Go ahead and pay, but I owe you.”

“That’s fair. On the next family outing, you can buy me ice cream.”

Cindy accepted her root beer float from the young girl behind the counter and took a sip. She didn’t know how to respond to Jackson. She wasn’t part of the ‘family’ and didn’t know if she’d be there for the next outing. Rather than agree, she concentrated on her float and sat quietly while listening to the rest of them banter about Christmas and New Year’s and the June wedding. She couldn’t help but wonder what she would be doing by then and where she would be.

As she ate, Cindy felt a peculiar tingling on the back of her neck. She looked around, peering up and down the streets. Other families hovered nearby, eating ice cream, and several couples walked along the sidewalk. It looked like everyone in town had come out to see the play. None of the other theater goers paid any attention to Cindy or the Nelsons, and Cindy had no reason to be paranoid, but she could not shake the eerie feeling that she was being watched.

Synopsis

Andi’s step-mother is a real piece of work!

But is Ruby a murderer?

Andi Anna Jones, so-so travel agent/amateur sleuth, puts aside her resentment of her father’s widow and books a 60th birthday cruise to Cancun for Ruby and three friends. Never does Andi imagine the cruise will lead to the murder of a has-been lounge singer—or that Ruby will be the main suspect.

Flirting with more than danger after arriving in Mexico, Andi connects with the charming local sheriff, Manual Rodriquez. After an embarrassing night involving the sheriff, too many margaritas, and a Mariachi band, a chance to check out an eyewitness to the murder leads her to Las Vegas.

In Vegas, a mysterious meeting in the Bodies Exhibition, a body preserving in the prep-room, and an evasive owner of a dance studio, give Andi clues to help Ruby. But when Andi is mercilessly drugged and locked in a storage room, she realizes dear old step-mom isn’t the only one in jeopardy.

Review

This was a fun new cozy series for me to start recently…especially since it is set in warmer weather (FL, Mexico, and Las Vegas) while I am freezing here in Texas right now.

Andi Anna has quite an unusual name, and if you say it fast, you might think of a certain film series starring Harrison Ford. The funny thing is that she was really named after her father, just a more feminine name. Andi and her sister have an ex-stepmother, Ruby, that has found herself in a bit of a pickle and has landed in a Mexican jail. Andi seems to be the only one that can go down and help her, and she discovers that maybe she likes investigating things. It doesn’t hurt that there is a handsome Mexican police detective named Manny that has taken an interest in Andi, and Andi in him.

I really enjoyed the multiple locations, trying to solve the mystery, and watching sparks fly between Andi and Manny. There are some red herrings, but a few clues are fairly obvious. However, the main clue eluded me until the end. What a surprise as the killer was revealed.

This book may be on the shorter side, but it is filled with nonstop action, and the race is on to discover the killer before more people die.

The 2nd book is due out at the end of February 2023, and I can’t wait to see what Andi is up to next. I think we haven’t seen the last of Ruby quite yet.

We give this book 4 paws up.

Day In the Life by Debra Sennefelder

Every day is different for the life of an author. Some days we’re knee deep in edits. Other days we’re writing all the words. And there are some days when we’re bouncing from one task to another while doing countless loads of laundry. Today I thought I’d take you along on my day. Ready?

6:00: Wake up and put on my workout clothes. I’ve been working at getting back into my morning routine and that includes exercising.

6:30: I’m downstairs with Connie (our three-year old Shih Tzu). After she’s settled on the sofa (she’s not an early morning riser), I fill my water bottle and then open up my fitness membership app and select a workout. Today it’s total body strength.

7:15: The workout is over and I’m dropping a K-cup into my Keurig. Time for some coffee and unloading the dishwasher. There’s also a quick tidy up of the kitchen.

8:00: It’s time to make breakfast (for me and Connie) and check in on Clubhouse for the daily chat. Once I finish breakfast, I take my second cup of coffee into my office, and I check emails and review my to-do list for the day. I have three guest posts to write for SLEUTHING IN STILETTOS book release and I have a partial to get together and send to my agent.

9:00: With my plan for the day finalized, I head upstairs for a shower and dress. Then I tidy the bedroom, making the bed. I really dislike an unmade bed.

9:45: I refill my water bottle and head into my office. It’s time to do some work. I begin with the guest posts. I have two that need to be polished, and I need to finish this one. Then I can send all three plus two interviews back to the blog tour operator (Lori is the best!).

11:00: I finish my water and stretch. I’ve worked in Pomodoro sprints, and I’ve gotten a lot accomplished so far. So, I think it’s time to throw a load of laundry into the washing machine. Plus, it’ll give me some extra steps.

11:20: I’m back at my desk. I check my emails again and then social media. I reply to a few comments and then I log into the Sisters-In-Crime forum and check out what’s going on.

11:30: I decide to finish polishing my guest posts before lunch. Woo-hoo. I get both done just a little after noon. UPS just showed up with my 2023 Erin Condren planner!

12:00: It’s time to break for lunch and I whip up a protein smoothie. I engage in a little play time with Connie and then I make another cup of coffee. Back in my office, settle at my computer to watch a few of my favorite YouTube channels. Today I’m watching A Little Box of Happy and BC Sells (two fashion channels).

1:00: I close out of YouTube and open my Word document. There are some final touches I want to make on my partial and then I can send it to my agent.

2:00: My partial is all set to be emailed to my agent. After another check of emails, I send a text message to my mom’s occupational therapist, and I leave my office. I have two errands to run. I need to stop at the grocery story, TJ Maxx and the bank.

3:30: I’m back home and putting away the groceries. Now I have to start prepping dinner but first, I have my 8Greens drink. It’s been a ritual for me for about two years. It’s like my late-afternoon cocktail but only healthier. I drink it as I check my emails for the last time today and I review my plan for tomorrow.

4:00: I’m tying on my apron and starting to prepare dinner. It’s been a productive day. I was able to cross off all my tasks that were due today. Tomorrow will be split between writing and promo work.

There you have it, a day in my life. It’s far from glamourous but I love what I do. And I hope you’ll love SLEUTHING IN STILETTOS.

Before you leave, I’d like to know if you have any daily rituals? If so, share it with us in the comments section below.

Please don’t hesitate to reach out to me on social media or through my website.

Review

Beck O’Rourke is back in the fourth book in this series. Beck’s love for reading mysteries has helped her uncover clues in murders around town and has helped her delve into the world of private investigating. Now she has her first paying gig from her college roommate to uncover who killed her father and why, especially since the police have written this off as a suicide.

This has been a fun series to read, and I like that the author puts clues out there, but you have to really dig for them, and many are red herrings. The choices are limited regarding who might have killed Mr. Greene, and many of them have possible motives. The true answer surprised me, much like this author’s last book. It was the last character that I would have suspected.

Beck’s former roommate, Jacquelyn, is quite a handful. She is pushy, bossy, and takes everyone else for granted. I was glad to see that Beck doesn’t let her get away with this attitude for the whole book. The whole family has some unique personalities, and not everything you believe about them turns out to be true.

We don’t see as much of Lizzy and Grandma in this book, and that is ok. This story takes Beck outside of their little community to solve the crime, and we get to see her interact with Devon, and she receives some answers to questions about their relationship. I like their interaction with each other and am glad to watch their relationship blossom.

This has been a fun series to read, and I wonder what the author has in store for Beck next. Only time will tell.

We give this book 4 paws up.

Review

Who killed the tennis pro and why? The answer might surprise you as it did me.

Beck is back in town and was roped into taking tennis lessons. I felt for Beck because I am a lot like her, not athletic, and definitely not interested in tennis. After one of the lessons, she meets Haley reading a book in the club, and they strike up a conversation about books. What Beck doesn’t know is that Haley is a professional tennis player. I think Beck’s ignorance about Haley helps forge a bond between the two since Haley isn’t being hounded for her status. I enjoyed watching their friendship evolve, and books are definitely at the center.

The relationship between Devon and Beck continues to evolve, and by the end, there is a better understanding between the two. There are some humorous moments that I won’t spoil for you since they might give away a little of the plot/storyline. But I appreciated that Devon recognizes Beck’s ability to uncover clues and details to help solve the case.

I enjoy the banter back and forth between Lizzie, Beck, and their grandmother. Lizzie and Beck are opposites, but that doesn’t prevent them from having a good sibling relationship. We also see these characters continue to evolve and have more layers to them.

And we can’t forget Scratchoff and his friend Shirley now working at the cafe. Scratchoff is quite the character and, despite winning a million dollars, is still the same guy he was before. He just helps more homeless people with the money.

This has been a fun series to read and book 4 is next on my list to read. We give this book 4 paws up.

Review

This is such a fun series, and I think everyone needs to rush out and read it and soon!

Paige and Glo inherited an inn from their great-grandmother, and in the basement is a magical library. It takes them and six others in their book club into the book to solve the mystery before they are returned home. In this installment, there is a special guest but no spoilers from me!

The book club is thrown into the Wild West, the late 1800s, and many of the amenities they are used to do not exist. They must adapt to not having a phone or even a camera at their fingertips. Luckily, the inn travels with them, and they can still have some creature comforts from home. I think I’d rather use indoor plumbing than an outhouse!

Turns out that there are a couple of mysteries to solve that are intertwined, but they don’t know this until much later. But the gang does well at finding clues and solving the mystery in the end.

I am always drawn into this series because it is so unique, or at least it is to me. I enjoy the banter between the characters, especially the mother/son duo. Forrest is more worldly than his mother would want to admit, but she still tries to shelter him whenever possible. Frank, the talking cat, can be a bit over the top, but he adds flair to the story. Because they end up in paranormal cozies, no one is surprised when he speaks.

I don’t think I figured out the mystery ahead of time. But I enjoyed sorting through the clues with the characters and wondering where the truth would land.

Definitely a series I will continue to read! We give it 5 paws up.

Death on a Deadline (A Homefront News Mystery)
Historical Cozy Mystery
2nd in Series
Setting – Pennsylvania
Crooked Lane Books (November 8, 2022)
Hardcover ‏ : ‎ 288 pages

Synopsis

Editor-in-chief Irene Ingram pencils in her newest mystery in Joyce St. Anthony’s second captivating Homefront News mystery, perfect for fans of Anne Perry and Rhys Bowen.

As World War II rages in Europe and the Pacific, the small town of Progress is doing its part for the soldiers in the field with a war bond drive at the annual county fair. Town gossip Ava Dempsey rumors that Clark Gable will be among the participating stars. Instead of Gable, the headliner is Freddie Harrison, a B-movie star. When Freddie turns up dead in the dunk tank, Irene Ingram, editor-in-chief of The Progress Herald, starts chasing the real headline.

There are plenty of suspects and little evidence. Ava’s sister Angel, who was married to the dead actor, is the most obvious. The couple had argued about his affair with the young starlet Belinda Fox, and Angel was the last person to see Freddie alive.

Irene discovers there’s more than one person who might have wanted Freddie dead. As Irene draws on her well-honed reporter’s instincts to find the killer—nothing is what it seems in Progress, and now her own deadline could be right around the corner.

Guest Post

I’m always at a loss about what to write when I have to come up with a guest post. Do I write about the book? The characters? The research? Myself? The writing process? Since I’m unable to narrow it down, I’m afraid you’re going to be stuck with all of the above.

Death on a Deadline is the second book (and I hope not the final one—I’m waiting to hear) in the Homefront News Mysteries. It features intrepid reporter and editor in chief, Irene Ingram. The book is set in June and July of 1942. When we visited with Irene last she had just solved the murder of one of her reporters, which was connected with some things going on at the local factory.

As Death on a Deadline begins, Irene is involved in planning the upcoming county fair. Town gossip Ava Dempsey swears that Clark Gable will be one of the stars headlining the war bond drive at the fair. It turns out that instead of Gable, they’re stuck with B-movie actor Freddie Harrison. Freddie happens to be married to Ava’s actress sister Angel. Freddie’s been doing the horizontal tango with Belinda Fox, who is also on the tour. When Freddie ends up dead in the dunk tank at the fair, well—you’ll have to read it to find out what happens.

The research for this one wasn’t quite as intense as what I did for Front Page Murder. I still researched the war and what happened on each particular day to correspond with the days in the book. It was just after the Battle of Midway, so the death of one of the boys in town is part of the plot. Just like the research I did for Front Page Murder, there were a few things that surprised me. In real life, there was a Nazi plot called Operation Pastorius. The goal of the men who landed was to blow up certain landmarks, one of which was the famous Horseshoe Curve in Altoona, PA. I already knew about Operation Pastorius, but what I didn’t know was that after these spies were arrested, the FBI rounded up two hundred and fifty enemy aliens in Altoona! Two. Hundred. Fifty. Now if you’re familiar at all with Altoona, it’s not that big. It simply amazed me. And if you’re anything like me, you’re going to sign off now to check Google. See you later.

For those who have stuck around, you should know that Joyce St. Anthony is my pseudonym. I wrote a previous series under my own name—Joyce Tremel. That series was the Brewing Trouble Mysteries (To Brew or Not to Brew, Tangled Up in Brew, and A Room With a Brew). If you haven’t already, I hope you check them out. They were all nominated for the RT Reviewers Choice Award for Best Amateur Sleuth and books two and three won the award. While I’m waiting to hear if the Homefront News series will continue, I’m writing the first book in the Cider House Mysteries, tentatively titled Deadly To the Core. It features a young widow who inherits her uncle’s fruit orchard and opens a cider house. Of course she has to investigate a murder, too. It should be out in a year or so.

That’s it for now. I hope you’ll pick up the books and let me know what you think. Happy reading!

Synopsis

Just when Fawn Malero was getting comfortable in her new life….

Fawn was enjoying her new-found career as a Supernatural P.I., settling into a relationship with the Werewolf, Logan, and figuring out how to interact with all the supernatural creatures living in the Seattle area. But it never occurred to her the water off the shore was also under her administration…that was until they started crawling out to beg for help.

Before she knew it, Fawn was on a quest to learn who was attempting to steal the magical properties of the ocean, where a powerful Vampire’s daughter was being held captive. And could she catch the Magician who’d been selling dangerous items to humans?

Of course, she wasn’t alone. The posse she’d collected were still with her and determined to help. If she was going to make it as a P.I. she wasn’t going to do it without backup.

The Fawn Malero Mysteries Book 1

“A Life with Beasts is a story of intrigue and attraction that is especially recommended for mystery readers who enjoy more than a light dose of paranormal encounters and a touch of romance.”-D. Donovan, Midwest Book Review

“a fun adventure/mystery. Courtney Davis brings a fresh perspective to the supernatural creatures we are all familiar with without sacrificing the original ideas associated with them. She creates an exciting world of werewolves, vampires, witches/warlocks, magicians, trolls, and many others.
The book is easy to read and fast-paced. It’s a great read for the summer holidays or when you want a light, fun read. Can’t wait for the sequel!
Also, there is a healthy dose of romance, which can tend to be a bit much for those who don’t read romance (like me). However, Davis has done a great job of making the romance central to the plot, so I found it quite enjoyable.”- Writa Bhattacharjee, GoodReads

“This was a fast read and I really enjoyed it. It gave me some high school Twilight memories but brought more supernatural beings into play. There were several mysteries and problems being solved but they didn’t feel. I found the characters likeable and funny.”-Sara, GoodReads

Guest Review by Nora

“It started about a month ago. A weakening among all of the supernaturals in the ocean. It’s like something is pulling the power out of the ocean and with it, our life forces. I don’t know how long until it’s too much, we could all die.”

This was a great read and one that I cannot stop thinking about!

It is evening in a bar for supernaturals in Seattle when a dripping-wet, naked woman stumbles through the door. Her mission: find Fawn Malero.

As the only private investigator for supernaturals in the area, Fawn feels compelled to help the woman, Eldoris, find the missing artifact that she is looking for. The artifact is a stone that was supposedly given by Poseidon to his daughters. The stone is supposed to have the ability to control the seas, but it was recently stolen by a human.

Fawn is not only compelled to help because of her profession but because she is a supernatural herself. Coming from a family of magicians, Fawn is also blessed (or cursed, depending on your outlook) with an empathy for the plight of other supernaturals.

As well as an ability to understand the thoughts of animals (and the half-dozen animal companions that this naturally draws) Fawn also has super-bendability and some healing capabilities. All of this combined makes her an excellent candidate for a private investigator, and she makes quick work of this case, soon finding the human who has taken the stone. But more problems begin to crop up, and Fawn is soon burdened with the decision of who, exactly, the stone is supposed to be returned to.

On top of this, Fawn is also dealing with a new vampire who has recently come to town searching for his daughter. But there is something suspicious about this vampire that sets Fawn on edge, even as she feels a strange attraction to him.

This is a madcap adventure that you are bound to have fun reading! Five stars for Fawn Malero!

It wasn’t more than ten minutes later that my next mission walked into the bar.

The bar door burst open and a woman walked in, dripping wet, naked, and wrapped in a towel. She looked like she had just crawled out of the sound. There were bits of seaweed dangling from her red hair, she wore a seashell necklace, and her emerald green eyes practically glowed. The entire bar turned to stare at her, she was beautiful and frantic, running across the room, clutching her towel and her bare feet left water marks on the floor. There was an odd sucking sound when she walked that I couldn’t explain and as she passed, I was hit with a smell I couldn’t at first identify.

“What the hell?” Logan whispered next to me, his eyes were wide, and he was watching the woman as close as anyone else.

I had a moment of jealousy but then saw his nose bunch, he didn’t like the smell of her either. It wasn’t like the rotten smell of a Troll; it was just unusual. The woman practically threw herself against the bar in front of Lila. Lila’s eyes went a little wide, but she was doing a very good job, I thought, of hiding her shock at this woman.

“I am looking for Fawn Malero,” the woman said, and Logan growled.

Her voice was surprisingly deep for such a small body and the sound of my name coming out of her mouth was jarring. If I had been drinking at that moment, I probably would have done a spit take. Lila pointed at our table; we were all still staring.

“Traitor,” Logan growled at his sister quietly.

I put a hand on Logan’s leg, hoping to keep him calm. This woman definitely didn’t look dangerous, and she certainly looked like she needed help. I could already feel something inside me waking up, my need to help a helpless creature activating. I stood as she hurried over, “I am Fawn, what can I do for you?” The rest of the bar seemed to still be listening though many were now being more subtle about it.

“I need your help, Fawn,” she said looking around nervously. “I am Eldoris, I was sent to find you.” Her peculiar scent was strong now and I felt like I had smelled it before, maybe this type of creature had been around my father’s house at some point when I was growing up.

“Why don’t you have a seat, Logan see if Lila has some clothes this poor woman can borrow.” I motioned for Eldoris to take my seat and gave Logan a pointed look. He frowned but left to do as I asked. “Can we get you something to eat? Or Drink?”

“No, thank you.” She took my seat and I sat in Logan’s.

We were secluded enough that a whisper wouldn’t be readily heard over the loud music that Lila had thoughtfully just turned up. I looked at the woman and smiled, I noticed now that she had a strange pattern to her skin along her inner arms and palms, her fingers were longer than normal and as she touched the table, I heard that slight sucking sound again. I was beyond confused, what the hell was she?

“I came out to find you,” she said a little frantic still. “I didn’t know who else to come to for help, we are all suffering.”

“Who? Suffering what?” I asked, deeply concerned.

Eldoris looked around, nervously.

“Who told you to find Fawn?” Drake asked quietly.

“Fanlin,” she said simply.

“The Elf?” I said incredulous. Fanlin was the leader of the Water Elf clan that was technically part of my father’s territory, however they kept very separate and lived northwest of Seattle, farther out on the Olympic Peninsula near the water.

“Yes, Fanlin and his clan are caretakers of the ocean and he told us that you were the one to speak to here about what’s happening.” She was speaking quietly now.

“What exactly is happening?” Logan asked, handing her a pile of clothes.

“Oh, thank you…” she looked around, nervous again. “I’m sorry this was all I could find to cover my body on my way here. I’m not used to being around such prudish creatures as you all are up here.” She dropped the towel revealing her completely nude body, much to the delight of many males in the room. Her stomach and chest were covered in the same odd circular pattern I had noticed on her arms and palms. Drake and Zin moved fast, putting themselves between her and the crowd even as a few brave males moved closer. Logan rushed to grab the towel and held it up to give her a little cover, not that she seemed to care. “How do I work this?” she said holding up a t-shirt. I tried to hold back my frustration as I grabbed it from her and pulled it down over her head. “Oh neat!” she giggled, smoothing it over her body, her wet hair immediately soaked the thin material which clung to her in a very revealing way.

This was not going to work. I handed her the leggings. “Pants, like this.” I mimed putting on pants, I was not going to do that one for her.

“Fun!” she said, pulling up one leg and then the other and ending with a loud snap as the stretchy material hit her stomach. “I can’t believe I am wearing clothes like you guys!” She twirled and lifted one leg then the other.

“What are you lovely ladies up to this time of night, in a place like this?”

Betina and I both jumped at the voice, we spun around and I pulled out my stun gun. When I bought it, I wasn’t sure if I would be able to use it, but standing there in the dark I did it without a second thought. I would do whatever necessary to protect Betina and myself. As the buzz lit up the shadow so did the smell of rotten milk and fish, Betina was defending us as well. The man shook, groaned, and hit the ground hard.

We both stared, unmoving for a full minute. The man didn’t move either. We leaned close. “That’s no human,” Betina said.

“I can’t even think right now,” I said. “Can you tone down your magical stench?” When I could concentrate again, I had to agree, this was no human. “A Vampire?”

“Maybe he’s just pale because you shocked the crap out of him,” Betina suggested.

“Take a closer look, if he was human, I might have killed him.”

“You take a closer look!” Betina whispered harshly.

I held the stun gun ready and leaned closer to the body. “He’s not breathing.”

“Dead not breathing, or Vampire not breathing?” She asked.

“How am I supposed to know?” I whispered a little too harshly, this was not part of the plan. In fact, this was exactly why I didn’t want to carry weapons. If I start killing humans I’m going to end up in my father’s basement behind bars.

“Feel for a pulse, Vampires have a pulse, don’t they?”

I knew enough about Vampire anatomy to know that was true, they didn’t have to breathe but their blood pumped through their body, full of oxygen from the blood they drank from humans. “Okay, take the stun gun. If he moves, shock him again.” I handed Betina the stun gun and she moved to stand on the other side of the body. She held the stun gun close to his stomach, ready. He was dressed in black slacks and t-shirt, boots and a leather jacket, goth enough to be a Vampire. The clothes looked a little out of date, but not enough to be overly obvious, Vampires didn’t tend to dress with the times, but more in a timeless fashion. I was starting to feel hopeful, shocking a Vampire into unconsciousness wasn’t a crime. “Okay, here I go…” I reached down and pressed two fingers to the side of his throat and waited. “Yes!” I said, a little too loud apparently because Betina got spooked and shocked the poor Vampire again. The smell of rotten milk and fish was again assaulting my nose and burning my eyes.

“Uh-oh, well if he wasn’t dead before, he might be now.” She dropped the stun gun and stepped back.

I stepped away too, mostly from the smell Betina was emitting. I wasn’t afraid of the stunned Vampire at this point. “He’s a Vampire, the shock won’t kill him, but I don’t know how long he’ll be out, we can’t leave him here where the sun could get to him.” If I were in any way responsible for a Vampire’s untimely death, that would mean serious trouble with Cassius Vamprose, the leader of the U.S. Vampires and a very scary being.

“And what do you suggest we do, drag him to the car and shove him in the trunk?” Betina said. I looked at her and shrugged, I didn’t have a better idea. She sighed, “I’ll grab his legs, I don’t want to be anywhere near that mouth when he wakes up.” I grabbed under his armpits and Betina lifted his legs then we shuffled back to where we had parked Annabel’s car. “You know, he’s kind of cute.”

“In an almost dead I want to rip out your throat and suck you dry kind of way?” I said sarcastically.

“Exactly!”

We dropped his body in the trunk and I slammed the lid. I stepped back slowly, half expecting it to burst open and the Vampire to come out in a rage.

“What if hottie Vampire wakes up in there?” Betina asked.

“Well… hopefully we aren’t in the car when he does. He can just bust out and walk away, that would be great.” I didn’t add what I was really thinking, which was hopefully he’d leave without figuring out who we were or trying to get any kind of revenge for the harsh treatment. I didn’t need the Vampire community thinking I was prejudice or afraid of them, though I was.

“What if he’s friends with Drake or Zin and they bring him to the house one day and he’s like oh my god you tazed me and locked me in a trunk.”

I looked at Betina like she had lost it, because in what world would something like that happen. “Let’s go back to watch the docks.”

“It could happen,” she mumbled.

Synopsis

When a mysterious bookshop visitor dies under murderous circumstances, the Christie sisters and their cat Agatha call on all they’ve learned about solving mysteries from their favorite novelist in this new series debut.

Ellie Christie is thrilled to begin a new chapter. She’s recently returned to her tiny Colorado hometown to run her family’s historic bookshop with her elder sister, Meg, and their friendly bookshop cat, Agatha. Perched in a Swiss-style hamlet accessible by ski gondola and a twisty mountain road, the Book Chalet is a famed bibliophile destination known for its maze of shelves and relaxing reading lounge with cozy fireside seats and panoramic views. At least, until trouble blows in with a wintery whiteout. A man is found dead on the gondola, and a rockslide throws the town into lockdown—no one in, no one out.

He was a mysterious stranger who visited the bookshop. At the time, his only blunders were disrupting a book club and leaving behind a first-edition Agatha Christie novel, written under a pseudonym. However, once revealed, the man’s identity shocks the town. Many residents knew of him. Quite a few had reason to want him dead. Others hide secrets. The police gather suspects, but when they narrow in on the sisters’ close friends, the Christies have to act.

Although the only Agatha in their family tree is their cat, Ellie and Meg know a lot about mysteries, and they’re not about to let the situation snowball out of control. The Christie sisters must summon their inner Miss Marples and trek through a blizzard of clues before the killer turns the page to their final chapter.
