Today I welcome author Peter Silverman to StoreyBook Reviews.  He is the author of Acting Obsessed which I will be reviewing in July.  Today Peter gives us his perspective on becoming an author later in life.

Author bio:

Peter Silverman attended Reed College, Indiana University, Drexel University, and Spring Garden College. Careers have included librarian, archivist, factory manager, and computer programmer. He has performed with semi-professional dance companies, and helped found a local chapter of Families With Children from China. He was born in New York City but has lived in Philadelphia since early childhood, with a brief sojourn in Los Angeles. He has two daughters. Acting Obsessed is his first published novel.

 Act Your Age!

At my thirtieth birthday party an older friend told me, “Peter, the way to stay young is to always act as immaturely as possible.” Joe was a funny man who dispensed good advice. Many years later, my teenage daughter, trying to break out of the cocoon of childhood, asked my mother to “stop treating me like a child.” I sympathized with young Jennifer, but my mother told her, “I’ll treat you like an adult when you start acting like one.” This ticked off Jenn even more, of course, and it made me think about the concept of acting your age.

When you write fiction you deal with human nature in two spheres. In one are your characters; in the other is yourself. Let’s forget about me for now (maybe that’ll be a topic for another blog) and talk about fictional characters. You can make a character as mature or immature or in-between as you like, but they must be believable and work (whatever that means) in the story. When it came to the two protagonists in my novel Acting Obsessed, Ginger and Winston, I realized that the question of maturity might not be as simple as I thought at first blush.

Ginger, an actress, is a creative artist who succeeds or fails in her profession depending on how she projects emotion to her audience. Winston is an IT professional, a hard-nosed, rational vocation where the people who hire him measure success in dollars and cents. So can Ginger get away with not acting her age, while Winston’s demeanor must project maturity? I was also a computer professional at one time, and I worked for plenty of hard-nosed, ramrod-up-their-butt managers, so I knew what Winston was up against. (There was even one ex-Marine VP who walked around the office carrying a swagger stick. One day I was bent over a printout on a table and he swatted me. He didn’t like it when I shot him a dirty look, and I was not surprised when, a month later, they laid me off together with about one-third of the staff. Six months after that the IRS raided the place.)

So who needs to act his or her age (besides that VP)? Actually, it’s the one who wears her heart on her sleeve and needs to emote on the job, not the one who must wear a rational face and bite his tongue about the idiots who run the company (maybe I would not have been laid off if I had stoically kept my eyes on that printout).

Here’s why: There are a lot of immature but successful computer programmers out there; in fact I’ve worked with some of them (and maybe one of them was me). At the same time, the artists I’ve known were required to think deeply about human motivation and emotion. That takes maturity, which a computer programmer does not need. Heck, I’ve seen programmers put up illegible web pages that do the opposite of what the end-user expects and wants. Equally insensitive quality control nerds let the project out the door, and hundreds, maybe thousands, of disgusted customers become frustrated and angry before the problems are corrected.

Of course, an actress or writer can also mess up, but they’re most likely going to learn about it long before any real damage is done. The director, the editor, the gallery manager, or the friend will bring the artist up short. It can be painful, but only to the suffering artist, and believe me it can be painful. And don’t tell me about a movie or play that flops, for example John Carter or Heaven’s Gate. Those are examples of collective brain freezes; if the producers had any sense to begin with they would have realized how bad things were from the start.

My grand insight, which I know you have been holding your breath for, is that you can be an IT professional and an emotional dunce who revels in childishness, but if you are an artist you must have insight, compassion, and wisdom. Surely those qualities are at least part of the definition of “acting your age.” I claim none of those qualities. In fact, I assert that I have been following Joe’s advice for a long time and I feel pretty young. Wait . . . where did that pain in my hip come from?

Synopsis:

Acting Obsessed: a novel of romance and drama, stalking and violence, mystery and intrigue in the historic heart of Philadelphia. In Ginger Brossard’s life the line that divides obsession from passion seems especially thin and easily crossed. As a young and talented actress with a burning ambition to be on the stage, she embarks on a career with a theater company in Philadelphia. An actor in the company soon displays an unwanted interest in her. When she turns his advances aside, meets an intriguing new man, and then receives a costly and beautiful gift from an anonymous admirer, Ginger finds herself entangled in a web of unanswered questions from the past, lethal danger, and the obsession of an unknown person who may have the power to devastate her life. In the end, she comes face to face with betrayal and violent death.

voodoo for two

Synopsis:

Be careful what you wish for…

Determined to marry the most eligible bachelor in the parish to save her family, Lucie LeBieu turns a “love bug” loose to cast its Voodoo spell. What she doesn’t count on is hitting two targets—the golden boy congressional candidate, and her Cajun-hot ex. To set things right, she must undo the spell before she falls into bed—-and back in love—with a certain down and dirty heartbreakin’ cop.

Undercover investigator Ben Boyette is back in Louisiana on special assignment when he runs across his old flame, brewing up trouble as usual. But when hometown threats turn deadly, Lucie’s life is on the line. Determined to protect both her and his politician assignment from falling victim to a murderer, Ben finds that he’s the one who’s falling hard…for the irresistible bayou temptress.

Review:

This is the second in the Cajun Magic series.  The book is set in the same small town with some of the same characters as the first book (which would be expected!).  The main characters from book one have a very minor role and are really just mentioned versus playing a part in this story line.  This book has romance and mystery all rolled up into one which makes for an exciting read.  Lucie thinks that her ticket out of town is the congressional candidate, but her ex-beau Ben has other thoughts.  Lucie thinks that the answer is a love spell but it goes awry since her voodoo skills are not up to her Grandmother’s!

I enjoyed the book and can’t wait to read the third one to see who is features in that book.  We give this 4 paws and if you are looking for a fun read, then check this book out!

You can pick it up on Amazon or Barnes & Noble for just $2.99

Above Rubies

His chivalry was strangling her.

He thought he was helping her—and in truth, he was. She was in desperate straits. But as honorable as he was, he was also breaking her heart.

Her attraction was drowning him.

When World Champion rodeo cowboy Rossen Rockland and his friends rescue a young runaway who has been abused by her foster father and take her home to his parents’ ranch, he expects her to turn out to be a pain in the neck. And sometimes she is.

It doesn’t take him long to figure out that she has way more than her allotment of troubles—and far more than her share of gifts. Lovely, talented, and ravingly brilliant, Kit Star is too young, unbelievably humble, and oh, so loveable. Knowing that she needs his protection and time to grow into her potential, Rossen also figures out that what she really is, is a pain in the heart.

Watch for more of the Rockland Ranch Series!

Review:

I really enjoyed this book!  I did read Peace River first (I’m just funny that way about series) but this definitely could have been read on its own…some of it at the beginning just made a little more sense since I had just finished book 1.   These books are tied to the Mormon faith, but I found it interesting since I like learning about other faiths and what they believe.  I thought it was a good tie in because it showed that the Rockland family had high morals and ethics because of their faith and they didn’t mind sharing that belief with others, including those with no faith.  The only part I found somewhat unbelievable was all these creative talents that Kit has – she creates beautiful sculptures that amaze everyone, she can play anything on the guitar after hearing it once and has an amazing voice….and she is only 18.  Oh and a photographic memory.  But despite that, I still enjoyed these stories and can’t wait to see if writes a story about Joey, I’m almost willing to bet she is next!

We loved these books and give them 4 1/2 paws

Peace River (Book 1)

The police didn’t understand the danger, but she did. Her father had always been abusive, but now, with a ten million dollar Thoroughbred farm on the line, and a powerful bookie leaning on him, her father had become out of control. But how do you get away and take a world famous stallion with you? Carrie was getting desperate when a handsome and honorable but thoroughly cynical rodeo cowboy from Wyoming happened to show up with a horse trailer. He didn’t ride a white horse, but he was definitely a knight in shining armor.

He’ll protect her from the mob, but can she survive falling in love with a bull rider?

 Review:

This first book in the series kept me on the edge of my seat!  A brilliant combination of romance and suspense.  I’d recommend reading this one before Above Rubies, but you don’t have to…..unless you like Above Rubies and then maybe some things will be given way if you go back and read this one afterwards.

Synopsis:

Determined to overcome a dark and tragic past, college student Everly Wallace is only months away from earning her degree in physical therapy. She’s consumed with school, caring for her ailing grandfather, and figuring out how to pay the next bill. The last thing she wants is a relationship, but it just might be the one thing she needs.

Major League pitcher Cole Parker hasn’t fought for anything in his life. He went from a privileged upbringing to a multimillion dollar All-Star career. But when his pitching shoulder starts to give him trouble at only twenty-four years old, he faces the possibility of his injury becoming public knowledge and costing him everything.

In a desperate bid to save his career, Cole decides to hire someone to treat his injury, someone who will keep things off the record and out of the media. He finds the perfect solution in Everly. As mysterious as she is beautiful, she provides an enticing distraction from his pain. Soon, physical therapy is the last thing on his mind.

When an act of betrayal brings the truths they both fear to light, Cole will have to fight for the first time in his life…not just for his career, but for Everly’s love.

Excerpt:

Thirty minutes later, she finally arrived at the restaurant. Between traffic and the unfamiliar area of town, it took her longer than she expected to get there. She thought she had given herself extra time, but she was still five minutes late. When she pulled up, she found herself at a valet stand. Rolling down her window, she flagged the valet who eyed her car as though it had just broken down at his feet. He approached with notable reluctance.

Waving at the twenty-dollar valet fee posted on a nearby folding sign, she asked, “Is there self-parking?”

“No, ma’am,” he replied stiffly.

She swallowed and nodded, getting out of her car so he could park it. She only had twenty dollars in cash, and she had intended to pay for her lunch with it. She knew the bank account was low until she got paid again on Friday, but she’d have to risk debiting her meal. Why hadn’t she thought to set some parameters when Cole suggested the restaurant?

Her headache ballooned as she hurried through the front door of the restaurant and looked around without spotting Cole. Frowning, she approached the maître d.

“Miss Wallace?” he greeted her.

Surprised, she nodded.

“Welcome. Mr. Parker is waiting at your table. It would be my pleasure to escort you there. May I take your coat?”

Damn. She probably couldn’t even afford the free bread at this place.

Giving the maître d a wan smile, she shrugged out of her coat, putting her gloves in the pockets and wrapping her scarf around one of her purse straps. She was sure she was imagining it, but she swore the maître d held her Target-brand garment a few inches away from his body as he turned to hand it off to whoever guarded the coat room.

Shifting uncomfortably when he gave her a quick once-over and lingered disapprovingly on her jeans, she took a deep breath and followed him into the dining room. There wasn’t anything she could do about how she was dressed, was there?

Lord, what a hot mess this was.

As she spotted Cole across the dining room at a table with a beautiful view of the outside terrace, another thought occurred to her. How should she greet him? Should she shake his hand since this was a business meeting? Go in for the awkward hug since she was good friends with his brother?

Bow because he looked like a god in his simple black V-neck sweater and gray pants?

She caught his gaze when she was still about ten feet from the table. A variety of expressions crossed his features, so many that she couldn’t read them all. She definitely caught irritation, though, and was puzzled when he ended up smiling.

OhGodOhGodOhGod…

He stood up. The maître d deposited her with a slight bow, so she ruled out that form of greeting. Then it was just her and Cole.

“Hello, Everly,” he said, his voice as smooth as a buttered biscuit.

“Hi.”

Had that been her voice that came out all breathy? She prayed it hadn’t sounded as ridiculous as she thought.

She started to lift her right hand for a shake, then realized he was tilting in for the awkward hug. To avoid hitting him in the crotch, she adjusted her trajectory. He smoothly used his left hand to continue her forward motion so that her hand ended up encircling his neck.

Then before she knew what was happening, her lips were pressed against his.

GlobalLife Genetics continues to pursue Samantha and they’ll stop at nothing to get her. Sam still doesn’t understand what GlobalLife’s plan is for her but she knows it’s something big. And she knows it isn’t good.

Review:

First off, if you haven’t read book 1, The Samantha Project, READ THIS FIRST!!!  The Golden Couple picks up right where this left off and while you could potentially read the book without having read the first book, I think you would be missing a lot of information.  Plus when I looked online, it was only $0.99 or you can sign up to win the book below.

WOW is about all I can say!  I loved the premise of this series, about people created in a lab with altered DNA and the conspiracy of a global company and their plans to rule the world….isn’t that how all companies are?!  But does everyone that works for GlobalLife really believe in what they are doing?  Or perhaps are they out to help protect the sanctity of life?  Now there are times where I wanted to shake Samantha and tell her to get real, but overall I really enjoyed this book and am going to have to get the third book in this series, A Chosen Destiny.

Synopsis:

On the surface, twenty-two year old Cole Morgan is exactly what any girl would be proud to take home to meet her parents: He’s charming, intensely handsome and goal-oriented…Only he has some secrets of his own, which include provoking bar fights and a former drug-addict of a mother slowly wasting away in a medical facility.

At barely twenty, Violet Lynn is Country Music’s hottest star, until one night of partying gets out of control. Violet ends up in jail and on TMZ. Suddenly, she’s the girl least likely to be invited anywhere. Sick of the drama and keeping secrets, she runs away from the prying eyes of the paparazzi to her grandmother’s home in Forrestville, North Carolina.

A chance meeting knocks Cole off his feet, but he doesn’t recognize Violet for who she is. In fact no one does and Violet plans to keep it that way.

Circumstances, however annoying, keep throwing Violet and Cole together. Unable to stop themselves they give into the inevitable.

But when Nashville is ready to forgive and forget, Violet is forced to choose between Cole and claiming her spot as the new and improved Princess of Country Music.

Will Violet and Cole have the courage to live for their dreams…Or their hearts?

Review:

I usually want to know everything NOW but the author did a good job of leaving you wondering for awhile what was Rae’s story and what was she hiding about the accident. I’m surprised that she went for Cole, he seems like your perpetual bad boy, but he did have a soft spot for his sister Kelly. So maybe he just didn’t make wise decisions.

I wasn’t wild about the ending because some things are left hanging…don’t know if this means there might be a second book or we are left to our own devices to figure out how the rest plays out.

We give it 4 paws and since this is supposed to be book 1 that hopefully book 2 will maybe fill in some gaps even though it will be about other characters.

Synopsis:

“Classic cars, garden gnomes, and steamy romance? My kind of book!”

~Bestselling Author Kate Perry

Her life took a wrong turn. He’s driven by success. They didn’t count on crashing into love…

Rachel Bennett loved her job until the day she finds herself doubting her choices.  Now she’s hunting for a new career, but starting over isn’t easy.  Her plan is simple—no distractions until she finds her dream job.  She didn’t plan on fate throwing her a curveball in the form of a fender bender with a sexy guy in an expensive suit.

Craig Larsen is a wealthy, successful business owner with a plan of his own: survive his current PR nightmare and stay away from his overly determined ex-girlfriend.  His need for control and personal success is turned upside down when he meets Rach, a sassy redhead who can’t drive.

Soon they find themselves battling with Rach’s grumpy old neighbor, toilet-papering the trees of a high school nemesis, and fighting over the last slice of pizza.  Can two very different people plus one fender bender equal a chance at forever?

Review:

This was a fun read!  It is a romance but with some “childish” antics thrown in…nothing like getting back at those you don’t like by toilet-papering their house!  Craig is so wrapped up in his life that he can’t figure out which end is up…at least not until his run in with Rachel…literally!  Rachel is at a point in her life where she doesn’t know what she wants to do.  She was involved with Social Work, but a bad incident shakes her up and she isn’t sure if that is where she belongs.  I felt like both of these characters were real and who doesn’t have issues in their life?!  And of course there is a dog….so April and Gracie were most excited about that….not sure who likes stories with dogs better – me or my two?  There are cranky senior citizen neighbors too….I love their spark!

We give this book 4 paws and recommend it next time you are looking for a fun romance book to read.

About the Author:

Niecey Roy author bio photo jpegNiecey Roy knew she wanted to be a writer from a very young age, but her moment of enlightenment came after watching the movie You’ve Got Mail. It was then she realized her place in life and happily parked her butt on writing romance. Her dream was to create sexy vixens, hunky, half naked heroes, and above all, romance; lots and lots of butterflies in the belly, breathless first kisses and happily-ever-afters.

When she’s not at her day job where she works as a legal assistant, she can be found at home at a cluttered desk, pounding her tired little fingers away on a keyboard with nothing but black pepper flavored sunflower seeds and Visine as her weapons for mass-romance-novel-creation. When her fingers need a break, you’ll find her at a table with friends, drinking a few martinis and showing off a new pair of (sometimes ridiculous) high heels. She’s usually the loudest at the table and most often the one snorting with laughter.

To complicate matters Nissa experiences all the signs that she’s met the being fated for her. This impossibility distracts her from her purpose. After all, fairies and humans aren’t meant for each other. How can her heart believe otherwise? Can Nissa successfully complete her first assignment as a Fairy Godmother? Will the fates allow Nissa and Levi to be together? And even if they do, will Levi believe Nissa once she reveals the truth?

Review:

I loved this book!  It was a smashup between romance and a fairy tale…literally!  Nissa is a sweet but somewhat naive fairy that just wants to help people.  Vicky is an insecure high school senior with a hunky older brother, Levi.  Vicky is Nissa’s project but what she doesn’t plan on is Levi and the attraction to him and could he be her soulmate?  I like how there are families that help the godparents while they are in this world before heading back to their world until the next assignment.

We give this 4 1/2 paws and highly recommend picking it up next time you want a fun uplifting book to read.  And a bargain at $2.99 for the eBook!
