Review

I really enjoyed this book and when the killer was revealed I could not have been more surprised!

I’ve always been curious about astrology and what all it means when Mercury or Neptune are in your house, and while you won’t learn exactly what all of that means, there is a lot of discussion about charts based on your birthday and birth place. I’ve had a chart done in the past but it has been awhile so this has me curious about what the stars say for me.

I did guess a few things but wasn’t sure exactly how they tied in to the whole story until the end. And of course my suspect was someone else entirely.

I also liked how they had to deal with a “cult” where the leader had many people in power snowed and thinking he was a good guy when he really wasn’t and what it took to uncover his deception.

We give this book 5 paws up.

Review

I’d give this somewhere between 2 to 3 stars.  Overall the plot was interesting but it got muddied down at the beginning.  The murder didn’t happen until a third of the way through and a lot of that beginning third could have been trimmed out.  Yes some of it was necessary for some background and to tie in later facts germane to the story, but I skimmed through a bunch of it.  Plus there were pages of articles from a journalist in there that could have been cut out.  I couldn’t find a point to those articles other than some history…but once again they could have been shorter or summarized.

Now I have an advantage to having worked in the mortgage lending business that I understood a lot of the terminology about how loans were recorded etc and am very familiar with the mortgage loan crisis, but I think that while we needed to know some of the information to tie the story together, not all of it was necessary.

This could be a good series with some editing.

Review

This is the second in a series about a farm that is used for historical reenactments and educating the town and tourists about the history of that part of Ohio.  This go around, it is tied to making maple syrup (interesting info if you didn’t know how it was made like me!) and the explanation is very educational.  I will never take maple syrup for granted again!

I have enjoyed this series so far, from the historical aspect, to the education side, and even how I am always surprised at who the killer turns out to be, it is never anyone I have suspected..at least not yet.  There is even a little budding romance between Kelsey and Chase; however, there is an added twist with her ex Eddie and his fiancee, Krissie and their upcoming nuptials.  We also learn a bit more about the custody agreement dispute between the two and how it really came into being.  And let’s just say there are some surprises at the end that have me very curious about how the situation will be resolved in the next book.

This is a series worth picking up and reading and we give it 5 paws up!

Review

I LOVED this book…ok, maybe because it has to do with wine and the wine country in California, but it was also a very engaging book with several twists and turns that I didn’t see coming…especially when the killer is revealed.

Each chapter lists a different kind of wine and what a good pairing might be for that particular wine. I had not heard of some of these varietals so I learned something as well. I might be seeking out a different kind of wine next time I am looking for something new.

Katie does have some burdens she is carrying in regards to her friend Tessa, but she does come clean about the past which I think only strengthens her friendship with Tessa.

The conversations between various characters are engaging, and even witty at other times. There is a love interest or two for Katie to spice things up.

This was very enjoyable and I can’t wait to read the next book in this series, but I’m going to have to wait a bit.  We give it 5 paws up

What the fudge?

The branch creaks alarmingly as I test my weight against it. For a second I think it might snap but then my foot slips and we part company anyway. Bark scrapes another layer off my grazed skin and to my horror I find myself tipping backwards, falling, falling…

Far beneath me my daughter Sophie gives an unwitting squeal, Henrietta’s twins shriek in unison and I hear son Josh call out ‘Mummeeee!’ when as much by luck as design my left arm catches a forked limb long enough for me to grasp it and come to a bone-jolting, shoulder-wrenching stop. Sweat drips down my body, my knees shake uncontrollably and something’s poking between my ribs like a sharpened spear, causing an actual hole through clothes into flesh.

Dangling, I somehow hook one leg round the main trunk and cling there like my life depends on it. Which, for the record, it does.

‘Hang on, Mum!’ Sophie yells for perhaps the fifteenth time. She’d wanted to climb up here but I’d told her it was too dangerous. When will I listen to my own advice?

I stop panting long enough to call down. ‘I’m OK, sweetheart. Perfectly safe.’ How long since I last clambered up a tree? Me, an overweight, unfit middle-aged, mother-of-two in not so skinny jeans. And what did I promise my family – that I’d avoid potentially risky situations? That any cases I took on would absolutely not involve capturing murderers or exposing criminals? Not that our patch of North London known as Crouch End is inundated with killings, just that I’ve somehow succeeded in entangling myself with two in the last eighteen months. And now the simplest of mundane jobs has turned an everyday school drop-off into what could possibly be my final farewell.

A terrified glance below shows Sophie clutching on to her younger brother’s arm, their long-standing feud forgotten as they contemplate their mother’s plight. Lauren, Henrietta’s eldest by two seconds, is hopping from foot to foot, pale with anxiety while her sister’s nervously studying her watch. I wonder what’s upsetting them most – the thought of Aunty Cathy’s untimely demise or being late for class. Yet again.

Three feet above me, inches from reach, a tortoiseshell cat stares down with baleful yellow eyes. I hold out a coaxing hand. ‘Here, Fluffy. C’mon, kitty. Pishhh whishh.’

Disregarding me entirely, he licks his paw before stalking further out, balancing on a twig, with the arrogant grace of a tightrope walker. Oh how I wish I’d ignored him when I saw that distinctive white-tipped tail swagger across the zebra crossing. But I’d spent weeks scouring backyards, crawling on hands and knees, peeking under parked cars, over hedges, listening to sweet old Mrs Thompson choke back sobs as I admitted failure.

I’m gathering my courage and strength to scale higher when my mobile rings. I wedge my bum into a crevice between branch and tree, tighten my hold and, with a few contortions worthy of the great Houdini, extract my phone from my pocket to peer at the screen.

Caller’s number withheld. Should I answer it?

Review

There is something about this series that I really enjoy. I don’t know if I can put my finger on anything specific but I have enjoyed each book that I have read and wonder what news reporter Carol Childs will get involved with next.

I like that Carol isn’t afraid to search for the truth using her investigative skills as a “cub” reporter for a chick-lit news station, they don’t report the gruesome news but do keep their listeners informed. She does have a young son and her love interest is Eric who is a FBI agent.

The mystery in this book is a little different as no one was meant to die, at least not initially. The thief also reaches out to Carol and seems to have some sort of connection to her and that is what helps her figure out part of the mystery.

Review

This is the first book by this author I have read and it was quite enjoyable. When I first started reading it i wasn’t sure because it seemed odd that Alexandra (or anyone) would just jump in and say Yes to helping the DEA capture someone. Or if they were going to use a civilian you would think that it would take more convincing since this was not going to be a “safe” case since she would be impersonating the sister of the person they wanted to capture and bring back to the US for trial.

Part of me thinks that Alex jumped into this because of her love for her business partner and the impression that he was a ladies man and not interested in her when that was the furthest from the truth.

I felt like the story really took off in the last half of the book when Alex was impersonating Daniela and how that situation went down and was then resolved. I did like that she had no problems relying on her faith to help her through the tough spots and to give her courage in this adventure.

This was a captivating Christian Suspense book and worth reading.  We give it 4 paws up

Review

This was definitely a different type of historical cozy for me as the main character is a Quaker and it took a little time to get in groove of the “thee and thy’s”. However, I enjoyed reading a book where the protagonist is a midwife and of the Quaker faith, it was interesting to learn a bit about this faith.

Now when it comes to the murders….I had no idea. I had some suspicions but those suspicions jumped from character to character as the story progressed. I don’t think I ever suspected the correct person!

Rose does have a suitor for her affections and I will be very interested to see how this plays out in future books since he is not a Quaker but has no problems with her faith. His mother may be another story!

We give the book 4 paws up and await the next installment!

Hi, I’m the author of the Pismawallops PTA mysteries, and I want to thank Leslie here at Storeybook Reviews for inviting me in to chat! She said I could talk about anything I want, and since I’ve heard a lot of people wonder about the setting of my PTA mysteries, I thought I’d talk a bit about Pismawallops Island.

Some writers like to use real places for their stories, but I enjoy inventing my own. My Ninja Librarian series is set in the highly mythical town of Skunk Corners. Some stories need to be set somewhere no one can double-check for accuracy! Likewise, I consider Pismawallops Island (like Lillian Jackson Braun’s Moose County which is “400 miles north of everywhere,” or Lake Wobegone, lost in the surveyors’ errors) to be just a bit out of reach of reality.

I grew up on an island in Puget Sound—Vashon Island, which stretches between Seattle and Tacoma. Though both are accessible only by ferry, Pismawallops is a lot smaller and more isolated than Vashon. That makes it more fun as a setting for my mysteries—it’s a small town, with some interesting constraints on it due to limited access and sharply defined boundaries. Because Pismawallops is so small and isolated, it often feels more like the Vashon of my childhood (a few decades back, and no, I’m not going to say how many!) than like anyplace in 2016.

The gradual development of the setting is part of the fun of writing a series. In the first book, with so many characters to introduce, only a few places became real. The school was the focus of that book, so Pismawallops High is the main place that gets developed. With Death By Trombone, the second in the series, I got to develop the town that’s grown up around the ferry landing. I haven’t drawn a map of the island, though, mostly because I’m hopeless at that. So sooner or later I’m sure I’ll made a huge mistake! I do keep careful notes, and though I can’t draw a map, the island is getting more and more clearly laid out in my mind. In this day and age, it’s nice to own some real estate.

In Death By Ice Cream, JJ MacGregor says that she believes the name “Pismawallops” is an Indian word meaning “useless hunk of glacial detritus in the water,” or something along those lines. And, like most of the islands in the Sound, it’s all of that—a gravelly ridge, or moraine, left behind when the ice-age glaciers retreated. But JJ loves it, just like we all secretly loved “The Rock” we couldn’t wait to get off when we were in high school. Being in her 40s instead of 16, JJ has enough sense to know when she has it good. She’s staying, whatever it takes.

A word about that name, by the way. I made it up, but I figure Washington State gives me the right: any state that has places called Dosewallops, Puyallup, and Humptulips (seriously) is just crying for a Pismawallops. I consider it was a public service to provide it. Maybe someday my old home state will properly appreciate what I have done for them.

In the mean time, Pismawallops Island is my own private playground. With each story, I have developed it a bit more, pulling bits from my own history and the Vashon of my childhood, and making up the geography as needed (the flora and fauna, however, are pure Vashon). I’ve tried to people the island with characters (that to say, the sort of people of whom we say, “He’s a real character,” meaning “what an odd sort of fellow”), because places like that seem to attract people like that (or possibly to grow them. I’ve never been sure)  (Note: My mother was born on Vashon Island. I grew up there. Not sure I dare go any farther with this “islands and odd characters” business). I hope you enjoy them all as much as I do!
