Prussian Counterpoint: A Joseph Haydn Mystery
Cozy Mystery
3rd in Series
Publisher: Foiled Plots Press (March 1, 2019
Paperback: 270 pages

Synopsis

When an enemy makes overtures of friendship, is anyone safe?

An unexpected invitation from wily King Frederick causes composer Joseph Haydn to fear he’s walking into a trap. After all, the Prussian King has never had any use for Haydn’s music. His Majesty seems more intrigued at Haydn’s being the son of a market-judge.

Worse still, the invitation appears to stir up suspicion in the highest quarters in Vienna. So much so that a mysterious, cloaked lady visits Haydn’s Music Room and issues a thinly veiled threat.

Now Haydn is convinced there’s mischief afoot. But not even he can foresee that he will stumble upon the corpse of the imperial ambassador a day after his arrival in Frederick’s Prussia, along with evidence that His Lordship may have been a common thief.

Can Haydn salvage the imperial ambassador’s reputation—and find his killer?

Special Feature

Introduction: I’ve longed admired Empress Maria Theresa, so when the opportunity to give her a larger story role presented itself, I naturally seized upon it. Prussia had in Frederick William’s time always considered itself an ally of Austria—a resentful ally, but an ally nevertheless. That changed in 1740 when Frederick William’s son, Frederick II, challenged Maria Theresa’s succession, reneging upon a promise Prussia had made to her father, Emperor Charles VI. She was only twenty-three at the time, a woman so cowed, Frederick believed, she would easily capitulate. Much to his surprise, she did not. She was heavily pregnant, her coffers drained, her advisors old and afraid, but she had no intention of giving in without a fight.

Maria Theresa never met Frederick the Great in person. Their encounter in Prussian Counterpoint is entirely imaginary.

Excerpt

“You had a pleasant journey, I hope, Your Majesty.” Frederick of Prussia bent his head graciously toward the Empress as he made the enquiry. His smile—benign, friendly—should have put her at ease. A long time ago, it had won her Francis over.

But there was nothing benign about the pale blue eyes that held hers in an unflinching stare.

“It was pleasant enough.” Her response was deliberately curt. She turned her gaze toward the dark, desolate streets of Potsdam. The steady clip-clop of the horses’ hooves beat a relentless rhythm in her brain. Her chest heaved, feeling more constricted than usual.

A friendlier man would have allowed her the courtesy of resting a day after an arduous journey through wintry roads. Instead, the King had barged into Seckendorff’s courtyard, demanding her presence at a supper that her ambassador had clearly known nothing about.

Seckendorff’s eyes had visibly widened and he had started as violently as a gun-shy horse at the unexpected sound of the King’s voice.

“The entire court is so desirous to make Your Majesty’s acquaintance, I had not the heart to keep them waiting a moment longer. I trust Your Majesty is not put out at the inconvenience.”

The air in the carriage was close, suffocating. The Empress pursed her lips, determined not to give her host the satisfaction of knowing how she felt. As always, Frederick had taken her by surprise. There had barely been time for any of her retinue to change out of their travel garb.

“The men and women who accompany me are more inconvenienced than I am.” She turned to face her longtime adversary. “That is my only regret.”

Frederick inclined his head. “Your concern becomes you, Your Majesty. But this is a small affair. A gathering of a few likeminded individuals. No one need stand on ceremony.”

The carriage climbed up the hill and swept into a semi-circular court of honor flanked by Corinthian columns. Snow glistened on the boughs of the trees, but the cobblestones had been swept clean.

“Here we are, Your Majesty. Sanssouci, my private abode, where we may be without care.”

“I pray that we may indeed be that,” the Empress replied as she stepped out of the carriage. Not that prayers could achieve any such thing. Not until they were out of Potsdam, at any event. Nothing but constant vigilance could prevent them from being caught off guard again.

Small Town Settings

I’ve always favored small towns as settings for my stories. Now that I’ve started a cozy mystery series, I can continue to follow that pattern.

How do I pick the small town settings? Most of my traveling is done by car, which provides a good opportunity to experience small towns firsthand. When adding a small town to my “collection,” I stay there to get to know the place and absorb the ambiance. As I explore the town, I look for characteristics that make it special and that I might use in a story. What does the town have that might contribute to a plot?

I once visited a town in eastern Washington known for its outdoor wall murals. They definitely characterized the town. How could murals be incorporated into a story that takes place here? I asked myself. Eventually, a plot was revealed: Suppose an artist was commissioned to restore some of the murals? And what if in the process she discovered the murals held secrets? What should she do? The answer to that question became Tell Me No Lies.

When visiting a town, I always add the museum to my list of places to explore. Museums can certainly tell you a lot about a place and can often yield story ideas. One town was experiencing conflict between developers and those who preferred the status quo, a conflict often familiar to small towns. In the story I wrote, Yesterday’s Promises, the museum played a prominent role, not only because the heroine was the curator but also because the museum displayed aspects of the past that were important to the town’s character and that should be preserved.

Murder Between the Pages features Richmond, a small town located north of Seattle. What setting details characterize this town? Richmond is very “artsy,” with an arts center, various bookstores, art galleries, and craft shops. As the town’s librarian, Nina Foster finds herself fully immersed in this culture and uses these resources to solve the crime.

Here is another way in which a setting might be used in a cozy. Take a close look at the word itself. The dictionary defines “cozy” as “giving a feeling of comfort, warmth, and relaxation.” But a cozy mystery deals with murder or some other crime, doesn’t it? How can comfort, warmth and relaxation coexist with the tension and upheaval a crime creates?  In two ways. First, the cozy setting may provide a contrast. For example, after a close call with the murderer, the sleuth finds refuge in the protected garden of a sympathetic town resident. The cozy setting and warmth of the friendly resident wrap around her, offering safety and security.

Or, the cozy setting could work in the opposite way. The sleuth could believe in the innocence of the setting and its owner but later discovers both are a lie, and that the cozy garden hides evil. In both scenarios, the setting is of supreme importance.

In constructing settings, I am very careful about fictionalizing. Although I might use a real town as inspiration, I give the town a fictitious name. Of course, certain geographical characteristics must be left with their true names, but everything else is from my imagination.

A hook-up turned lethal. A spurned, angry cowboy. Can rebel Maggie turn the tables before a killer adds her to the list of lost causes?

Washed-up alt-country rocker-turned-junker Maggie Killian is pulled to Wyoming by an irresistible force . . . former bull rider Hank Sibley, the man who broke her heart fifteen years before. When she unexpectedly meets his Sunday school-teaching girlfriend at a saloon, Maggie seeks liquor-fueled oblivion between the sheets of a younger man’s bed. But after her beloved vintage truck breaks down and leaves her stranded in the Cowboy State, she learns her hook-up died minutes after leaving their rendezvous. Suddenly surrounded by men with questionable motives, Maggie searches for the murderer while fighting the electricity between herself and her old beau, and her new penchant for local whiskey.

When the police zero in on Maggie despite a disturbing series of break-ins at her guest cabin, she realizes she’s got no one to rely on but herself. To keep herself happily in bars instead of behind them, she must stop the killer before the cops realize the man she really suspects is a jealous, angry Hank.

Live Wire is the first standalone book in a trilogy featuring sharp-tongued protagonist Maggie Killian from the addictive What Doesn’t Kill You romantic mystery series. If you like nerve-racking suspense, electric characters and relationships, and juicy plot twists, then you’ll love USA Today best seller Pamela Fagan Hutchins’ Silver Falchion award-winning series.

“Welcome to Wyoming. Consider everyone armed.”

If you live in Texas or like all things Texas, you’ll want to read this book because Wyoming is Texas in the North.  I found myself laughing throughout the whole book whether it was Maggie’s antics or the references to Wyoming and its citizens because I swear they are just like Texans.

“Wyoming is an eat what you kill state.”

While the wildlife might be more plentiful in Wyoming since they have fewer residents, Texans do love to hunt and eat what they kill…whether it is a deer or a squirrel, so this line resonated with me because of the people I know and their love for hunting.

“Revenge sex only makes her feel better until it’s over.”

Maggie is caught in a whirlwind now knowing what she wants or thinking she might know what she wants (aka Hank) but does he want her?  And will having a one nighter with someone else be in her favor or not?  Sadly, this time it ended in murder.  So not sure it was worthwhile.

“The sun is rising. Red. Orange. Yellow. Pink. Sedimentary layers of flame glow above the dirt and rock, like a Technicolor stage set.”

It’s descriptions like these that paint a picture of Wyoming, the towns and the people that make me want to visit (maybe not move there) and capture these images for myself.  We have some spectacular sunrises in Texas too.

“Riding Lily sounds Zen. Or as close as she can get to it, with her life like a swarm of mosquitos in a bug zapper.”

Lily is a horse (if you couldn’t figure that out) and a pregnant mare at that!  I loved all of the interactions between Maggie and Lily and felt that a bond was forged over cookies….after all, what woman doesn’t enjoy a good cookie, even if she is a horse?

I have to admit this is the first book by this author that I have read but it will not be the last.  Each page pulled me further into the story, rooting for Maggie and hoping she would get together with Hank again, wondering who killed Chet and is causing other problems, and wondering will Maggie want to stay in Wyoming or return home to Texas.  I love when there is a mystery embedded in the story (who killed Chet) and is with most mysteries, the small town sheriff wants to point the finger at Maggie which forces Maggie to investigate the crime.  We all know how this is going to end – Maggie will put together enough clues, give it to the sheriff and they will arrest the killer.  Now what I’m not telling you is that the killer is someone I NEVER suspected!  Heavens!  The killer was hiding in plain sight and kudos to you if you figure it out before they are revealed.

The interaction between Hank and Maggies is riveting.  There are times where I thought they might get back together, times when I was surprised Maggie was still in Wyoming, and times when I wondered if either of them would get on the same page.  Since there are two more stories in this series about Maggie, I have to suspect that it is a possibility but with certain events near the end of this book, I do wonder if I am right or wrong.

Run (don’t walk) to your nearest bookseller and grab a copy of this book or even all of the books she has written, I don’t think you will be disappointed.

We give this 5 paws up and will be reading some of her other books that I already have on my Kindle!

Broken Bone China (A Tea Shop Mystery)
Cozy Mystery
20th in Series
Berkley (March 5, 2019)
Hardcover: 336 pages

Synopsis

Theodosia Browning serves tea and solves crimes in Charleston, a city steeped in tradition and treachery in the latest Tea Shop Mystery from New York Times bestselling author Laura Childs.

It is Sunday afternoon, and Theodosia and Drayton are catering a formal tea at a hot-air balloon rally. The view aloft is not only stunning, they are also surrounded by a dozen other colorful hot-air balloons. But as the sky turns gray and the clouds start to boil up, a strange object zooms out of nowhere. It is a drone, and it appears to be buzzing around the balloons, checking them out.

As Theodosia and Drayton watch, the drone, hovering like some angry, mechanized insect, deliberately crashes into the balloon next to them. An enormous, fiery explosion erupts, and everyone watches in horror as the balloon plummets to the earth, killing all three of its passengers.

Sirens scream, first responders arrive, and Theodosia is interviewed by the police. During the interview she learns that one of the downed occupants was Don Kingsley, the CEO of a local software company, SyncSoft. Not only do the police suspect Kingsley as the primary target, they learn that he possessed a rare Revolutionary War Union Jack flag that several people were rabidly bidding on.

Intrigued, Theodosia begins her own investigation. Was it the CEO’s soon-to-be ex-wife, who is restoring an enormous mansion at no expense? The CEO’s personal assistant, who also functioned as curator of his prized collection of Americana? Two rival antiques’ dealers known for dirty dealing? Or was the killer the fiancée of one of Theodosia’s dear friends, who turns out to be an employee—and whistle-blower—at SyncSoft?

INCLUDES DELICIOUS RECIPES AND TEA TIME TIPS!

In a rehabbed Spur station, Suzanne, Toni, and Petra, three semi-desperate, forty-plus women have launched the Cackleberry Club. Guest Post

All of the Witch City Mysteries are set in—where else?–the famous Witch City itself, Salem Massachusetts. That magical city also happens to be my birthplace, and as the publicity folks at Kensington Publishing were delighted to learn, I was born there one dark and stormy Halloween eve!

I’m so glad I chose Salem for my background locale. Of course, it helps that I know my way around there pretty well, but mostly I’m finding that Salem’s rich history is a never-ending source of inspiration for plot twists and intriguing details for my characters to discover.

Many of the places I mention in the books are real. I actual streets and buildings as much as possible. Even the house on Winter Street where my heroine Lee Barrett and her tech-savvy librarian Aunt Ibby live is based on a real house. I enjoy sending Lee and her detective boyfriend Pete Mondello to restaurants Salem people recognize like Dube’s or Bill and Bob’s or Gulu-Gulu.  The couple often visits the Salem Willows Park or take long walks on Deveraux Beach in nearby Marblehead. Some of the places are made up, of course. Lee is a field reporter at WICH-TV. There is no such station—but shouldn’t there be?

Sometimes I rearrange things to suit my storyline. In Final Exam, I needed some deep old granite pits so I put some a lot closer to Salem than actually exist there. In the next book in the series, Late Checkout, I completely rearranged the interior of Salem’s main library. One of the joys of writing fiction is the ability to move things around in time and space.

Every cozy mystery heroine needs a dependable “side-kick.” Lee’s best friend is a practicing witch I named River North. (River’s name is a little “in-joke” for Salem readers. The North River flows through Salem!) River is also a Tarot Reader with her own show and the beautiful Tarot cards often provide clues for Lee to interpret—usually with the help of her wise (and maybe psychic) cat, O’Ryan.

Though I live in Florida, my husband Dan and I try to visit Salem at least once a year—preferably when the weather is pleasant. However, I still often use Google Earth to find my way around the city so that I won’t send Lee in her blue Corvette convertible up any one-way streets the wrong way.

I hope my readers will enjoy a fictional visit to my magical city along with a good mystery. Perhaps you’ll even want to visit there someday for real!

Carol J. Perry knew as a child that she wanted to be a writer. A voracious reader, whose list for Santa consisted mostly of book titles, she never lost sight of that goal. While living in Florida, Carol was on assignment for Southern Travel Magazine, preparing an article on the world’s largest sand castle which was being built near her home. That combination of events inspired her first young adult novel, Sand Castle Summer. That book was soon followed by half a dozen more.

Carol has always been an avid reader of mysteries. Her debut mystery novel is set in Salem and involves O’Ryan, a most mysterious cat, several witches and some strange Halloween happenings. Review

If you enjoy Mediterranean food (like I do) and like a good mystery, then this is a series you will want to read.  From the characters to the tantalizing dishes, everything falls into place and makes this a fantastic read.

This is the third installment in this series and I have enjoyed watching the characters develop, the family dynamics, and the mysteries being hidden in plain sight.  Well, maybe not quite in plain sight because I have yet to figure out the killer.  There are twists and turns that I didn’t expect which kept me on the edge of my seat wondering what could possibly happen next.

I enjoy the potential love triangle between Lucy, Azad, and Michael.  Granted, Lucy claims that Michael is just a friend but I think if he had his way they could be more.

This series continues to improve so we give it 5 paws up and perhaps one day I’ll try one of the delicious recipes that tease us in the book.

Right now I can’t afford to hire staff, so I need to use my time wisely.’ Letitia ‘Tish’ Tarragon, dressed in slim, dark-wash cropped jeans, a black short-sleeve T-shirt, and a pair of leopard-print canvas sneakers, balanced herself on the top step of her vintage red kitchen step-ladder and went about mounting the last of eight whitewashed shelves upon the sage-colored walls of her new restaurant and catering business, Cookin’ the Books Café.‘

Honey, I live right down the road. I can help you. Mary Jo is just the next town over. I’m sure she’d help too.’

‘Hmm, maybe for Halloween? That’ll give me two months to settle in.

’‘Halloween would be perfect. The whole business district shuts down and parents bring their little ones for trick or treating. You’d make a killing! Er, no pun intended.

’‘I got it,’ Tish laughed.

‘You truly couldn’t pick a better spot for your business. It’s kismet.’

Located on a quaint main road halfway between Richmond and Fredericksburg and with access to the interstate, the early twentieth-century white clapboard building once served as the first general store for the town of Hobson Glen, Virginia. In time, the general store closed and the building was repurposed as a delicatessen, then a butcher’s shop and, in its most recent incarnation, a specialty bake store. Indeed, a sign reading Cynthia’s Baked Goods of Distinction still hung over the front porch.

‘From your mouth to God’s ears,’ Tish answered hopefully.

‘No need for prayers. Once people get a taste of your food, they’ll be lined up outside the door. What you got planned for opening day?’

‘A Hogwarts-inspired back-to-school menu: Dobby’s pasties, cheese broomsticks, Butterbeer cakes, Sorting Hat pita bread and hummus, and miniature steak-and-kidney pies. I’ll also have my usual range of salads and sandwiches.’

‘Sounds delicious. Kids and parents should love it.’ Jules fanned himself. ‘Just one little word of advice? Air conditioning. Switch it on. The only thing keeping me from fainting on the spot is the cool relief I feel by having my butt planted up against these refrigerated cases.’

Review

I have always loved cozies especially when paired with food/cooking and books and this new series wraps all those up into one tidy package.

This new series finds us in Hobson Glen with protagonist Tish and her two college friends, Jules and Mary Jo.  They are the three musketeers and find themselves embroiled in discovering who killed the unlikable Binnie Broderick.  There is no shortage of possible suspects and because Binnie was killed at a dinner that Tish was catering, she is on the hunt to make sure she or her business is not implicated in the murder.  In their quest for the truth,  there are many secrets revealed about various town citizens and Tish even finds a potential love interest.

I really enjoyed the characters, the town, the mystery, and the food!  I loved the names of the dishes that Tish comes up with for her cafe and while I’m not 100% sure on some of those sandwiches, the creativity is unique and worth exploring.  I wish there was a cafe like that in my town.

The mystery was cleverly disguised and I have to admit I didn’t figure it out until near the end.  Now that is my kind of book.

I think this is going to be a fantastic series and can’t wait for the next book to come out.  We give this 5 paws up and suggest picking it up next time you are looking for a new cozy series.

Fresh from solving her third mystery—and saving Dunmullach’s firstborn males from a vengeful ghost—Gethsemane Brown’s ready to relax and enjoy her summer. Her plans include nothing more dangerous than performing in the opening ceremony of the annual rose and garden show and cheering on Frankie Grennan, who’s entered his hybrid rose into the competition.

But when a mysterious stalker starts leaving Frankie floral bouquets as coded messages, Gethsemane fears a copy-cat may be planning to recreate the still-unsolved murders of the infamous Flower Shop Killer. Then Frankie’s main competitor in the rose show—and the reason his marriage failed—turns up dead in Frankie’s rose garden. Frankie takes first prize in the category “prime suspect.”

So much for a relaxing summer.

As bodies start dropping like rose petals, Gethsemane must judge the other suspects and find the real killer. Or rose bushes won’t be the only things dead-headed in Dunmullach.
