Synopsis

“I found you,” whispered into my ear.

“My life is crumbling away before my eyes while I do nothing to prevent it.  I have visited too many funerals, for too many friends who haunt my dreams.  Everybody dies eventually, right?  No, everybody dies young when they befriend me.  Was I born to die young? I don’t think so.  I’m the only one here with the nerve to stay alive.  I can’t be left alone.  Not with that hollow man, the one who hides his face.  That’s what he wants, me to be alone, because once I’m alone, he’s going to kill me!”

Seventeen-year-old Rosetta Harper is plagued by nightmares of a masked man. With her father’s new career move, her family has just relocated from Florida to the small New England town of Ashwood.   A quiet town and close-knit community where you know your neighbors, and trouble is a word unspoken. But soon after her arrival, her world and the worlds of her classmates come crashing down.

Michael hates his family and feels alone and unloved. He only finds comfort when he’s with his friends, but even they get on his nerves. Everything about Ashwood and his life bores him, until Rosetta Harper moves into town. With her as a new classmate, Michael finally gets the excitement he was looking for, but it may be at too high a cost.

The smell hit me first.  Wet and reeking of dirt, my body twitched from the pointed grass blades stabbing at my skin. Hesitantly, my eyes opened with several tiny blinks to assure myself I was where I appeared to be.  Placing my cut palms on either side of me, I lifted myself off the ground to get a better look at my surroundings. Birds chirped their merry jingle overhead while trees danced in the swift breeze.  Turning every way before concluding I was lost or in the middle of nowhere, I slowly got to my shaky feet. The forest surrounded me and had no end in any direction. “Hello.  Hello!”  Nobody answered, so I was totally lost . . . and suddenly cold.  I wrapped my arms around my chest to keep warm and found, to my surprise, I was still naked.  Covering my privates, I worried about the situation.  Where was I, and how did I get here? I tried to swallow my fear but only tasted blood in return.  In reaction to the metallic taste, I spat any saliva I currently had in my mouth onto the ground. It was red. So, I wiped my face with the back of my hand and pulled it away to see it was covered in blood.  Whimpering, I used my other hand—blood—so I used the palms of my hands—more blood. As I stared in horror at my painted appendages, I realized something terrible must have occurred at the party last night. What had happened? I had taken those stupid drugs from Chloe, swam a bit, had nearly been raped by Tommy, and almost shot by Zach (which had to have been the drugs).  There’s no way Tommy was there, and I doubt Zach would ever shoot me.  But then I remembered the bathroom.  What was that about?

“Rose!  You’re alright, thank God,” somebody said behind me.  I made sure my privates were covered before turning around. Who was it?  “Tommy!” I screamed, removing my hands. Quickly, he looked away and said, “Shit!  Sorry, I didn’t mean to see you there.”  I screamed again at the mutilated corpse and ran in the opposite direction.  “Rose, wait!  Come back!” It’s the drugs!  They haven’t worn off yet, that’s all!  Just keep running, and he won’t catch up. Just keep running . . . I screeched to a halt and shrieked.  Zach was blocking my path, and he was covered in blood.

His neck was torn out to the spine, and flesh dangled from where his left arm used to be.  “Missed me, you bitch?” He sprinted at me with fiery eyes, so I turned and ran back in the direction I had come.  “Where you going, Rose?  I thought you wanted to screw me?” He yelled. I cut myself on a few sticks, and the occasional rock hurt my foot, but nothing would stop me from avoiding the furious zombie behind me. Unless Tommy showed up again! My dead ex emerged from thin air in front of me, so I quickly tried to stop but instead fell forward.  He tried to catch me, but his eyes were closed, and I fell through him anyways. Sliding in the dirt and leaves below stung the entire front side of my body.

“Sorry, Rose.  I tried to catch you, but being a ghost and all doesn’t really allow me to interact with the real world.” I scrambled up to my feet, faced him, and backed up into a tree. “Just stay back, okay?” His eyes were still shut and his hands were raised in defense. “Okay, whatever you want.  Listen, I don’t mean to scare you or cause any harm.  I’m here to help.” I was staring at his dangling intestines when Zach ran out of the brush behind him. Tommy quickly tripped him, and we watched him fall into the dirt, same as me.  Zach grumbled on the ground before struggling to get up with his one arm.  “What the hell, man?” “What do you mean, ‘what the hell?’  Stop freaking her out!” “Oh yeah, like you haven’t.  Just look at her.”  Zach gestured towards me. “No, dick, she hasn’t got any clothes on.” “That’s not stopping me.” “Well, you’re a pervert.” “I’m dead, so let me do whatever the f* I want without lecture, please.”  I stared Zach down head to toe.  He wore a pair of bloodstained jeans, nothing else.  Soon, he noticed what I was doing and got real pissed.  “What are you looking at?”

I pressed as tightly against the tree as possible. “Nothing, nothing.” “Good.” Tommy slapped the back of his head.  “Cut it out.” “This is her fault.  I’ll do whatever I want.” Tommy opened his eyes and peered into Zach’s. “No, you won’t.  Because if you keep freaking her out, I’m going to beat the shit out of you.” Zach scoffed. “Go ahead and try. My body expelled all my excrement hours ago.” Tommy giggled. “That’s actually kind of funny. Morbid, but funny.” “F* you, man, and stop laughing.” “Or what, you going to beat me up with one arm tied behind your back?” He laughed again, and Zach dove for him.  They roughed around on the ground for a while until Tommy pulled Zach’s head back far enough for it to get stuck upside down. At that point, Tommy got up from the fight and turned to make sure I was still there. Once he glimpsed me, he looked away and said sorry again. Zach squirmed in the leaves until, finally, he gave up trying to fix his head and resorted to begging Tommy for help. “Not until you promise you’ll leave Rose alone.” He moaned. “That’s unfair. I have every right to haunt her, and torment her, and make her life a living hell.”  Tommy kicked his arm nub, and Zach screamed in pain.  “Fine,” he sobbed, “fine, but this isn’t fair!” “Death’s not fair, so get over it.  Do you promise to leave Rose alone?” “Sure, but why should I?” “I need her.” “Oh, your needs overpower mine.  I see what’s going on.” “No, I just overpower you in general, so you have to listen to me or your head stays on backwards, got it?” “Got it.”

“Good.”  Tommy picked Zach off the ground and helped him stabilize his footing before pulling his head back into the right position. “Better?” Zach cracked his neck twice. “Whatever.” He glanced at me and soaked in the image of me naked. “For someone so beautiful, you are so evil.” I was breathless. What did he mean?  Tommy pitched in.  “Hey, it isn’t exactly her fault.” “The hell it isn’t! She tore out my neck!  She swallowed my arm!  She killed me!  It is completely her fault!” “Fine, I agree, but can you blame her?  You were pointing a gun at her earlier.” “Because she hit me and kicked me in the nuts. Plus, I was insanely wasted and on a little coke.  You can’t really blame me either.” “Yes, you can.  You were in control of your actions; she wasn’t.”  Tommy pointed at me. “How do you know that? Maybe she was and just wanted to kill me. Did you ever ask her that?” “No, but—” “Exactly, you can’t know.” “Then ask her yourself if she meant to kill you, if you want to know.” “Fine.”  Zach faced me again, but I couldn’t speak or even comprehend what was going on.  He sucked in a deep breath. “Did you mean to kill me?” I was dead silent staring between the two ghouls, and it took me about twenty seconds of Zach waiting patiently and Tommy looking away to actually speak. “What?” Zach seemed about to cry and kicked at the ground a bit before coming closer. “Did you mean to kill me, Rose?”  His eyes were watering, and he was shaking his head.  “I have to know.  Did you intend on killing me?”

I was dumbfounded, so I looked to Tommy for help, but he didn’t want in on the conversation at all. “Zach, I . . . I have no idea.” “Please, Rose, please, you can tell me.  I’m already dead for Christ’s sake.  Did you mean to eat me?” I stood in front of the weeping ghost, heartbroken.  “No, I don’t even know what you’re talking about.  I don’t even know why you’re here, or why I’m here.  I just woke up in the woods, and now this is happening.” Tommy pitched in. “Wait, Rose, what do you mean you don’t know what happened?  Are you just saying that because it happened so fast or—?” “No, I have no idea what you freaks are even talking about.” Zach, red-eyed, lifted his arm and pointed at me.  “Don’t you dare call me a freak!  The only reason I’m even here is because you’re a f*ing monster!”  Tommy shouted at him to shut up, but he didn’t.  “No, listen, Tommy!  She knew about her condition and refused to accept it!  Now, because of her, I’m here rotting away with wonder boy and hell spawn!”  Zach was crying his eyes out now.  “I just want to be home with my family.  I just want to be home.”  He sat on the dying leaves. “Is that so much to ask?  Apparently, it is for you, Tommy.” Tommy rubbed his eyelids.  “I’m sorry, Zach, but your death is not Rosetta’s fault.  You were at that party, you got drunk, and you lost your cool.  Now you’re dead, and it is only your fault, so stop getting mad at Rose.” “Now you’re on her side again?  Great.” He wiped his snot with his only arm. I tried to absorb what they were saying. “Wait, Zach, what do you mean by my ‘condition’?  And why are you even here?” Zach laughed bitterly. “What do you mean ‘condition’?  It’s such garbage.” He looked up at me and saw I was unquestionably confused. “Rose, you know what we’re talking about, right?” I looked between the two of them and shook my head. “My God, I’m dealing with a complete idiot.”

Tommy turned around with his eyes still shut.  “I tried telling her over and over, but she would never hear me.  Every day, I bugged her, but she never noticed.  Not until you two were in bed, that is.” I was getting annoyed. “You tried to tell me what?  What was it?” Zach raised his arm and got up. “Oh, it all makes sense now.”  He faced Tommy angrily.   “When I was getting in bed with her, she saw you, so she hit me, and I hit her, and now I’m dead.” Tommy rolled his eyes under their lids. “You’d be dead anyways for being stupid.” “Thanks.  Thanks a bunch.  You know you are such a piss poor friend, Tommy.  Here I am dead just trying to get a little angry with the woman who murdered me, and you’re defending her and insulting me at the same time. Real nice.” I intervened before Tommy could argue back.  “What do you mean I murdered you?  And what do you mean I ate your arm?  You said that earlier, and that’s impossible.  I don’t remember doing it, and I sure as hell have no idea why I would.  And this condition you mentioned, what’s that?  Plus, Tommy, what do you mean you tried to tell me?  Tell me now!  I’m listening!” The two ghouls exchanged looks.  “Zach, you want to tell her? You’d be better at breaking the bad news.” Zach scoffed. “What news? She should have known when she was bit. Doesn’t anybody watch movies anymore?” I yelled.  “No, I do not watch movies! Are you happy?  Please tell me what the f* is going on and why I’m talking to two dead people!” “Well, my description of you would be Satan. Yeah, that’s pretty accurate.” I turned to Tommy. He would answer my questions. “Tommy? Please, Zach is no help.” Tommy inhaled and swallowed.  I could see his exposed Adam’s apple move up and down.  “Well, Rose, it started when you and I were attacked in the woods after Brad’s party a month ago.  You see, I died, so I’m cursed to walk the Earth in limbo until your curse is broken.

It’s kind of stupid and doesn’t really make sense, but we have to roll with it because we don’t have another option so—” “Tommy, please, I’m begging you, get to the point.  Why did I murder Zach?” “I’m getting there; it’s just hard to say and sounds pretty dumb, so give me a second, alright?” Zach pitched in. “Dumb? I’m dead because of this so-called dumb curse.” I was really annoyed. “What curse?  What are you talking about?” “Er,” Tommy started, “You see, there isn’t any way to put this logically, so I’ll just tell you.”  He inhaled. “You’re a lycanthrope, Rosetta.” “What the heck is lionthrope?” Zach slapped his hand against his forehead.  “You’re such a moron it’s unbelievable.” Tommy shushed Zach. “Rose, it’s an, um, it’s a werewolf.”  He gave me a crooked smile. I stared at his closed eyes in disbelief for a second and chuckled. “I really am going insane.” I began walking into the woods. What I needed was a therapist. There must be some repressed memories causing me to be delusional; otherwise, I wouldn’t be seeing my dead lovers. “Rose,” he called after me, “I know what it sounds like, but you have to believe me. I’m dead for crying out loud. So is Zach.  Please listen to me.” I stopped walking and turned around. “Listen to you, Tommy, the dead ex-boyfriend slash football player. And who else? Oh yeah, the guy who tried to rape me while I was on drugs. No thanks, I’ll pass on this one.  You’re just in my head, so leave me alone!” I turned to run off, but Zach blocked my path. “I am dead! I am f*ing dead because of you! And you want to blow it off? No way am I letting that happen.” “A werewolf, though? Really?”  I crossed my arms.  “If you wanted me to believe I killed you, you should have said I reacted crazily because of the drugs in my system or something. That’s the condition I thought you were talking about. Not turning into a f*ing monster that howls at the moon once a month.”

Paige Tyler’s sexy, action-packed SWAT series is back this August with the release of Wolf Trouble! To celebrate this latest release, Corporal Xander Riggs has agreed to sit down for a Q&A with us:

If you could go back and change one thing about your past, what would you change?

“I would have left the narcotics squad I was in back at the KCPD before things went to crap. Of course, if I had, I wouldn’t be a werewolf right now.”

Excerpt

Xander had to pick his jaw up off the floor of the training room when Gage introduced the newest member of the SWAT team. He didn’t know what to expect, but it sure as hell wasn’t Officer Khaki Blake. Tall with an athletic build and just enough curves to fill out the SWAT T-shirt, she had the biggest brown eyes and softest looking lips he’d ever seen. She had her dark hair back in a bun, so he couldn’t tell how long it was, but he’d bet money it fell past her shoulders. She smelled way too good to be believed, too—like a slice of frosted spice cake in a uniform.

Shit. He was practically panting. If he didn’t get a grip soon, he was going to start drooling.

He gave the other guys a covert glance to see how they were dealing with her scent and was stunned to see that none of them reacted at all. Why not? His nose wasn’t that much better than theirs. He knew for a fact that several of the other guys—Cooper Landry and Jayden Brooks specifically—could smell a hell of a lot better than he could.

Maybe everyone was so mesmerized by finally getting to see a female version of their kind that the rest of their senses had stopped working.

Gage had left it up to Xander to fill the guys in on what had gone down at the meeting with Deputy Chief Mason while he’d headed home to get ready for his trip to Washington State. While the guys had been pissed that the top brass was playing politics with the team, they’d been intrigued at the idea of adding a female werewolf to the Pack.

They’d bombarded him with dozens of questions, none of which he could answer. Was she as fast and strong as they were? Did her abilities manifest themselves in completely different ways? Would she be as aggressive as they were and able to handle herself in a fight? Were there more like her out there, or was she the only one?

Not all the questions were so general. Brooks wondered what she would look like, Max Lowry wanted to know if she would smell like them, and Eric Becker… Well, Becker just wanted to know if she liked to wear yoga pants. God, that kid had an obsession with those things.

Xander had told them what he knew—that no one except Gage knew a damn thing about female werewolves. And Xander wasn’t so sure how much their commander knew, either.

While Xander was lost in thought, Gage turned the floor over to Khaki, who was currently explaining how much she appreciated the opportunity to be in SWAT.

“I know I won’t be handed anything, but I look forward to proving to every one of you that I belong in the Pack and on the team.” She spoke in a light, lilting voice that surprisingly filled the large classroom. Xander could definitely pick up the Midwest accent, so she probably wasn’t originally from the Pacific Northwest. “I’m not asking for anything from you but a chance to do prove myself.”

Synopsis

After her foster mother’s unexplained death six months ago, fourteen-year-old Isla Timearth just wants things to go back to normal for her and her twin brother, Monty. But “normal” can only go so far for a closed-off girl with abandonment issues and an anxious boy that gets frequent nosebleeds. Still, the troubled redheads give it a shot by returning to the summer camp they’ve been going to for years.

Aside from her crush showing up unexpectedly, the summer starts out as Isla expected: she participates in multiple activities with her friends, while her brother shies away from doing anything with anyone. But camp traditions get rained on when their biological mother shows up unannounced and, as far as Isla’s concerned, unwelcome.

Knowing that Mother Nature is the mother of all mood swings, Isla isn’t all that surprised to find out that her temperamental biological mother is the terrestrial goddess. What does surprise her is that Monty, the favorite twin, already knew but never told her. Despite being annoyed that such a huge secret was kept from her, Isla has always questioned the loyalty of her own flesh and blood. But once more family secrets start to unravel around her fellow campers, Isla finds out whether blood really is thicker than water.

That doesn’t answer my question,” I said. “But don’t worry. I used to care, but I got over it.” I’d grown sick of Mona playing favorites between Monty and me, and it was amazing how much better I felt once I stopped trying to compete for her time.

“It’s not as straightforward as you think, Violetta.”

“Oh I’d say it’s pretty straightforward, Mona.”

“Well maybe you’ll change your mind after you see this,” Mona said as she pressed together her middle finger and green-tinted thumb. As soon as she snapped those two fingers, the downpour stopped cold turkey. “You see? I’m not just your birth mother, Violetta, I’m Mother Earth as well. And there’s nothing straightforward about being a child of Mother Earth.” Well, that explained why Mona told us when we were younger that she didn’t have a stable home or income that would support us full time. Not that it really made a difference anyway; the fact that Mona chose the weather over her biological children was inexcusable in my book. “Isn’t that right, Montrose?”

“Wait, you knew about this?” I asked my brother.

“I thought we weren’t gonna tell her,” Monty said to Mona. He looked just as shocked as I was, but obviously not for the same reason.

I pushed open the mahogany doors and entered our suite. Ray was sitting on the bed wearing a black button down shirt with matching slacks.
“Happy birthday, babe…surprise!”  I announced throwing up my hands in the air.
He sat as still as a statue staring at me in disbelief as I rushed over to him jumping in his lap laying a kiss on his perfectly full lips. He didn’t respond to my touch and instead took my hands and gently scooted out from underneath me.
“Sid. What are you doing here?”  He said in a hushed tone. Climbing to his feet, he nervously glanced toward the closet doors.
As my brain began to slowly process the fact that Ray was not happy to see me, I heard the door to our closet open and out walked a strikingly sexy young woman. She had vivid red hair, the color of a fine burgundy wine, full of fire and exotic danger. Her hair perfectly complemented her catlike green eyes which were deep set inside of her perfectly oval face, reminiscent of a delicate porcelain doll. She was breathtakingly beautiful.
She was my worst nightmare.
I was mesmerized; I couldn’t take my eyes off her. She was wearing an expensive black gown with a neckline cut seductively low, which perfectly accented her full breasts and flowed downward to reveal a sensual hint of her long, toned legs. Her dress was sprinkled with Swarovski crystals woven into the fabric to make it truly stunning, not to mention memorable.
I suddenly recoiled in horror…
She was wearing my dress!
I resented the fact that she looked so good in it.
Her cat green eyes were focused on me. She was appraising me and silently saying, “We both know I look sexier in this dress than you ever could.”
I looked at her and then back at Ray still trying to understand why this woman was in our room with my boyfriend and wearing my dress. My boyfriend was sitting daftly on the bed trying to comprehend the feminine connection between me and this goddess who had turned my entire romantic life upside down.

Excerpt

I woke with a start. I was sweating and my heart beat as if I had just run a marathon. The nightmare that had haunted me as a child was back. The fear of the dark and the demons taunting me were back…in spite of the therapy.

I bolted up, but saw nothing. I must be going blind. I shut my eyes and tried opening them again. There wasn’t anything but a black nothingness like the disconnected hole my life had become.

I pulled my hand from beneath my covers and brought it to my face but couldn’t make out my five digits or the sparkle of the custom made Esmeralda Designs ring my father had given me for graduation. I glanced toward my nightstand, but the alarm clock didn’t greet me with its tall, bright, neon numbers and its faint hum was silent. I shifted my gaze to the left and looked toward the window on the far side of the bedroom where the lights that illuminated the driveway should have been shining into my apartment, but the windows weren’t visible.

Synopsis

Detective Danny Mancini is on a case, following a murder suspect. When he catches him, he finds out that the perp isn’t even human: he’s a 200 year old rogue vampire!

The department doesn’t believe him, and puts him on early retirement, despite his many years of service to the Chicago Police Department, which sends him into a downward spiral.

Two years later, Danny gets an invitation from the beautiful, young and very attractive Detective Angelica Cross to join a secret branch of the FBI to help her track down Vincent, the wayward vamp.  But renegade werewolves, meddling immortal witches and Danny’s strange visions of a life lived a century ago with Angelica make things more difficult than it should be.

“Should I…say something? A prayer?” he asked Angelica, uncertain.

“Only if it makes you feel better,” she said. “Better off saving your breath until you’ve finished your duties. After that, say all the prayers you want for your friend.”

He sighed, and started reciting the Hail Mary in his mind, if only to distract him and steady his nerves for what he was about to do. He held the stake in place with his left hand and swung the hammer down with all his strength with his right. He felt the crunch of bone and the pressure of the muscles before the stake lodged itself into Camille’s heart.

Dark, cold and rancid blood spewed out of the wound, hitting him in the face. He didn’t tear his eyes away, however, from the hideous sight that was formerly his best friend. Her eyes–formerly bright green–snapped open; the whites were reddish and the irises were gone, it was all black pupil. Her formerly wide and friendly mouth opened. He watched, as if in slow motion, the jaw widen and distend beyond any lengths humanly possible, as Vincent’s had two years prior, as he had attacked that girl. The fangs were fully extended and as sharp as the very stake he’d used on her. But was the absolute worst, above the aforementioned atrocities, was the shriek that emitted from her throat. It started out softly, like a kitten whining, but it steadily and rapidly got louder until it resembled a cross between nails on a blackboard, a bat’s call and a demonic crow’s caw. He wanted to cover his ears, close his eyes, and rock like a baby until the men in the white coats came to take him away. But he couldn’t. He knew that he needed to save Camille’s soul before he lost whatever remained of his mind.

He dropped the hammer to the floor of the grave and grabbed the dagger Angelica handed him. The shriek stopped, mercifully, but the sound still reverberated in his ears. He wondered idly if he’d have hearing damage. He looked at Camille. Blood was covering her uniform, splattered on her hands, arms and face. Blood also trickled from her mouth (where she’d gnashed her fangs against her lower lip) and nose. Her eyes followed his movements, filled with blind hate and hunger. Her fanged mouth was set in a vicious grimace. Any pity he’d had for Camille vanished. This thing was not his partner and he was going to rid the world of this abomination once and for all.

He brandished the dagger and Camille looked at him even more hatefully. With a simple swipe, he severed the head from the body. Blood oozed out below the head and onto the white lining of the coffin before the eyes faded back to Camille’s natural green and the fangs retreated back into her gums. She was no longer a monster and her soul was set free.

About the Author

Lily Luchesi is a young author/poet born in Chicago, Illinois, now residing in Los Angeles, California. Ever since she was a toddler her mother noticed her tendency for being interested in all things “dark”. At two she became infatuated with vampires and ghosts, and that infatuation turned into a lifestyle by the time she was twelve, and, as her family has always been what they now call “Gothic”, she doesn’t believe she shall ever change. She is also a hopeless romantic and avid music-lover, and will always associate vampires with love, blood and rock and roll. Her interest in poetry came around the same time as when she was given a book of Edgar Allan Poe’s complete work. She then realized that she had been writing her own poetry since she could hold a pen, and just had not known the correct terms. She finished her first manuscript at the age of fourteen, and now, at twenty-one, has two contributing credits in anthologies and a debut novel, Stake-Out, is soon to be published by Vamptasy Publishing on May 19th, 2015.

Dead Girl Blues
By Joyce and Jim Lavene

• Genre – Cozy Mystery (PARANORMAL)

When Nashville cop Skye Mertz and her husband, Jacob, are killed in a wreck, Skye is given the opportunity to come back for twenty years to raise her five-year-old daughter, Kate. With her ghostly mother-in-law’s help, Skye hopes to be there until Kate is old enough to take care of herself.

But three years into her twenty-year service to Abraham Lincoln Jones, the man who gave her the extra time, Skye is beginning to think life might have been easier before she died.

Abe asks her to investigate the murder of his sorcerer, Harold the Great, a man who was a victim of too many snakes. And the Life Extended People (LEPs – a nice term for zombies) who work for Abe have begun turning into ghosts and disappearing. Only Lucas, the possibly evil, amnesiac sorcerer who lives with Skye and her family, can save her from being the next victim of the deadly curse.

To make matters more complicated, Skye has found a lead in solving the riddle of her husband’s death. She has never believed Jacob died as a result of the crash, but hasn’t been able to prove it. Many other people have lost their lives in the same lonely stretch of highway that he did three years before. Skye goes against Abe’s express wishes to discover the truth with a crazy man bent on vengeance.

Review

This was a very different type of mystery but not sure if I would classify it as a cozy, but very close. A majority of the main characters are zombies – but not the “want to eat your brain” types. They act and look like normal humans other than they don’t need sleep or have to eat food. There are also ghosts, sorcerers, werewolves and even a few “normal” humans. Skye became a zombie 3 years ago so that her daughter wouldn’t have to be raised as an orphan when Skye and her husband Jacob were in an accident and killed. Her MIL, Addie, is a ghost and lives with Skye and Karen. There is also Lucas, Skye’s love interest even if she doesn’t realize it despite them living together. he is a sorcerer that can’t remember his past but knows that he loves Skye.

There is a good balance of characters and several “mysteries” to figure out. The ending is a good cliffhanger setting it up for another book.  Of course I didn’t realize this is the 2nd book in the series which explains why some parts of the story were glossed over because they happened in the first book.  This is why I don’t like to read a series out of order!  It didn’t detract from this book but I think the history of Skye and other characters would be better understood.

We give it 4 paws up and if you like paranormal books you will like this series.  Just start with book 1.

Indiana Shamira has a dark secret that could shatter her version of reality and get her killed in the process. Now if only she could remember what it is…

Not only does Sam know all about her previous life, but he seems intent on seducing her as well. Of course her boyfriend, Kurt, has different ideas – like making her open the portal to hell!

And then there is the nagging suspicion that Indiana is not entirely human, now she can see ghostly images from the Otherworld. Or could it be from the life she can no longer remember? They include the flickering effigy of Kurt and a redwood forest that conjures up deeply repressed magic.

Not only will Indiana have to risk everything to keep the door to another dimension closed, she will have to decide whether she is ready to lose her heart to someone who has more secrets than herself.

“It is time.” Her voice purred like a kitten, but Indiana suspected she was really a feral animal on the inside.

“For what?” Her voice was raspy, hesitant and unsure if she really wanted to know the answer. Somewhere, deep inside, she suspected she already knew.

“Just remember I’m doing this for us,” Sam whispered into her ear. “So we can be together forever.”

Before Indiana could question him further, she felt a flurry of hands over her body. Indiana tried to open her eyes, but a warm hand reached up and carefully covered them.

Indiana was bitten – hard, and she groaned in pleasure. Shocked by her unexpected display, she clutched her hands outwards. Feeling the writhe of skin on skin, she tried to pull herself free. The tickle of fingers across her neck and down her spine calmed her with their warm familiarity.

“It’s okay, Indiana.”

The feathery words danced across her skin, warm like a summer breeze. She stilled and let Sam’s fingers intertwine with her own, relieved by his simple touch.

Time seemed to move forward and Indiana was presented with brief snippets of fleeting images; Camilla biting Sam, biting her. Indiana enjoying the pain of Camilla’s sharp teeth as they gnashed at her neck, her thighs and her wrist. The flurry of skin and hands and teeth as they writhed together in the height of passion. Pale hands slithered over her own luminescent skin, then Sam’s darker skin brushed against her own, warming her and protecting her but against what she was unsure.

Then Camilla poised over Sam, a knife in her hand. A flash of blood as it splayed out from a gaping neck wound. Indiana’s involuntary gasp and then choking sob at the sight of the cavernous hole. Hungry sucking as Camilla drank her fill. A warm hand, its fingers still laced through hers, slowing turning ice cold.
