Synopsis

Elated by Annie’s response, Johnny caved to his impulse and pressed his mouth to her sweet lips, sparking a surge of electricity that ricocheted through his entire body, and for one glorious moment swept him up in a wave of emotion that meteorically whisked him to the edge of the universe, past swirling spirals of brightly burning stars — white dwarfs, red giants, entire galaxies. Caught in the rapture, he shed his cocoon of darkness and experienced the light — the wonderful, warm, life-affirming light. He reveled in it, felt alive. He almost believed he was. Almost.

* * *

West Coast journalist Annie Sinclair’s career, not to mention her love life, has been on the skids far too long, when she returns to Logan Point, her small, Indiana hometown. She’s back to make amends with her elderly father, and to delve into the 25-year-old, unsolved murder of her high school classmate for a writing gig with a national tabloid.

Annie’s plans soon go awry, and her mettle is tested — first when her father warns her against digging into the past; and again, when she meets the Logan Point Ledger’s handsome, but exasperating, new editor; and again still, when she reconnects with her first love, who clearly wants to rekindle what once was.

But Annie’s most arduous test appears in the form of the earthbound spirit of a boy she once knew — the boy with the azure eyes accused of the murder she is looking into. He needs her to prove his innocence, so he can break the ties that bind him to the darkness. In exchange, he will set Annie free to realize that the love she yearns for is just within her reach … if only she will open her heart.

Guest Post

Hello? … Anyone there? … Can you hear me? … I’ve been stumbling about in this darkness for what seems like forever, lost, alone, looking for that certain someone to help me break these ties and open the door to the light, the blessed life-affirming, all-forgiving, soul-saving light.

My name is Johnny Lange, and life stopped for me 25 years ago, when I was 18 years old. The last thing I remember is rocketing down the highway toward Logan Point with daddy’s boy Carter McKuen, who was at the wheel and sloshed to the gill. Let me be clear: Carter McKuen was not then, never had been, and never would be my friend. That’d be true even if he hadn’t plowed his Coupe de Ville into that tree and killed me.

Just like life, death is complicated. I always figured that when you die, one of two possibilities await: either it’s lights out, or a representative of your designated Afterlife destination escorts you there. If you figured that, too, you’d be wrong. The Afterlife can get messy, and there are as many possibilities as there are dead people.

In my case, no one was waiting for me, but I was not alone. Once I made the transition, the lost souls were everywhere, as they always had been. I just hadn’t been able to see them. Suddenly, I was one of them and feared I was doomed to this purgatory for all eternity. However, I eventually learned that heaven was waiting for me! To get there, all I had to do was clear myself as the murderer of my high school classmate, Shelayne Goodnight.

First let me be clear — I’m not the one who killed Shelayne! I don’t know who did it, but it wasn’t me. Proving that wasn’t easy, even while I was alive. I had dated her exactly twice. Unfortunately, her father, who I never liked, never liked me either and told the sheriff he suspected me. Rumors started and never stopped — even now, after I’ve been dead 25 years.

Fortunately, I used my free time to hone my communication skills. Regardless of what you’ve seen in the movies, it’s not easy for a ghost — even a friendly ghost — to make himself visible and audible to a living person without scaring the spit out of them.

Thank God, I was able to get through to Annie Sinclair and persuade her to help me. If anyone could prove my innocence and figure out the true identity of Shelayne’s killer, it’s Annie. And once she does, only one hurdle between heaven and me will remain — Annie’s heart.

Thank you for this opportunity to tell you a bit about “Love, Lies, and Azure Eyes” and how I fit into it. (Hint: My eyes are azure.) If you want to join me to learn how the story plays out and who killed Shelayne, the book is available as an ebook for just $3.99. But if you sign up for the give-away, maybe you’ll win it! And if it’s an enticement, I can assure you, my story has a happy ending. •

But with dreams, there can also be nightmares

Lonely and plain-featured, Mona Parker is just another faceless teenager at Spring Hill High School. One day she runs afoul of Lady Anne Golightly, a beautiful and arrogant classmate who turns Mona’s colorless life into a hellish existence. Bullied relentlessly and with nowhere to turn, Mona considers suicide. One night, Thaddeus Finkle, her guardian angel, appears. He offers her a way out—swap lives with another.

The choice seems easy, and Mona takes the angel up on his offer. She awakens on Meredith, a parallel world of Earth where magic has replaced technology. Mona discovers she is Alexandria, a woman of breathtaking beauty, and the daughter of a Duke complete with servants and riches.

Then she discovers the price of her bargain.

Trapped behind the Veil, an impenetrable curtain of magic, the Duchy of Wheel is the last major province still unconquered by Marlinda, the creator of the enchanted barrier. Known as the Dark Queen, Marlinda’s cruelty includes a singular fondness for melding men, women, and children, with animals…and she has special plans for Alexandria.

Tal, the Prince and Heir of the Empire of Meredith, burns with an intense hatred for Marlinda and her minions. The Dark Queen’s raiders regularly cross the Veil to prey upon the helpless citizens living near the magical boundary. Despite an elaborate system of Watch Towers along the enchanted barrier, it is impossible for the Empire to stop all the raids. Desperate to protect his people, Tal takes dangerous risks to prevent these attacks. Banished to a remote garrison for his reckless behavior, while on a routine patrol, Tal leads an elite unit that happens upon a group of raiders—one whose leader possesses the means for opening a way through the Veil.

Thus begins the conquest of the Veil.

“The Open Portal is packed full of action from the time it begins in our mundane world, to when it jumps to another. It has all the elements of a good fantasy: a cruel queen; a frustrated prince; and a beautiful girl with a pure heart. There are brave boys, werewolves, white priests, and watchtowers. I can’t wait for the saga to continue.” — Abookanight

Excerpt from The Open Portal

By Michael Scott Clifton

Mona removed her hands from her face and for the first time, studied her reflection.

A stunning woman—perhaps the most beautiful woman Mona had ever seen—stared back at her.

She pulled and prodded her skin, still not quite convinced the flesh was hers.

The image in the mirror did the same.

She leaned closer. Her flawless complexion, creamy with a hint of rose blush, curved gently across smooth cheeks. Delicate eyebrows formed symmetrical arches above thick, long lashes framing eyes of soft, velvet blue. Mona tilted her head to view a perfectly proportioned nose, slightly upturned, perched on her face. Full, sensuous lips formed her mouth. Her slightly parted lips revealed perfect white teeth, beneath which, a strong, yet subtle chin extended. Thick, luxurious hair, the color of spun gold, flowed halfway down her back. In fact, the only imperfection Mona could find was an ugly, purple bruise located just above the right temple. Although obvious her new persona took a blow there, she had no way of knowing how or why.

Mona stood to continue the examination of her body. Tall and statuesque, she wore a thin robe belted loosely at her waist.

She untied the belt.

The robe fell open to reveal she wore only a pair of silky underwear. Red-faced, she quickly jerked the robe shut. A nervous laugh escaped from her lips at how foolish she was acting. This is me—the “new” Mona Parker! A smile tugged at her mouth, and she released the robe a second time to let it fall to the floor.

She posed before the mirror and turned from one side to the other.

Her legs were long and shapely. She ran her hands across a trim, flat abdomen that segued into an hourglass-shaped waist. Slim, tanned arms stretched from her shoulders to end in hands tapered with long, elegant fingers topped by glossy, manicured nails. She twisted to admire the sight of firm, muscular buttocks. Finally, she cupped her breasts, and a wide smile appeared. Large, full, and perfectly proportioned—like the rest of her body.

Mona picked up the robe. Conflicting emotions roiled inside her. Happiness, disbelief, and guilt waged a battle for supremacy in her mind. Part of her wanted to shout and celebrate, while another part stubbornly clung to her new appearance as a hoax, an illusion, with nothing good to come from it.

Mona stepped away from the mirror and studied herself again.

She estimated her height at well over six feet tall. No wonder my body felt so strange and clumsy when I first got out of bed. After all, I’m barely five feet two inches.

It struck her then just how peculiar the whole situation was.

I think of myself as short, but now I’m actually tall. She shook her head and struggled to align her thought processes with the obvious evidence of her eyes. Everything is upside down.

With a deep breath, she did a slow pirouette, her eyes narrowed in concentration at her reflection.

While the new Mona appeared to be a young woman in her early twenties, the old Mona would be eighteen on her next birthday. In fact, the woman in the mirror represented the opposite of everything Mona despised about herself. All the flaws she cursed her body over—acne, bushy wild hair, stick legs, and flat chest—every one replaced by physical features she could only dream about.

Mona knew firsthand the experience of being homely and plain. It gave her a perspective an attractive person could never appreciate. A chuckle escaped from her lips.

Take that, Lady Anne! You can’t hold a candle to me!

Numb, Mona sat down on the bench…then leaped up. Arms stretched to the ceiling, she crowed, “I’m beautiful! You hear that world? I’m gorgeous!”

Joy filled her. This isn’t a dream or an illusion. My body is real, and I’m real!

Mona hugged herself and laughed until tears of happiness spilled from her eyes. Although in a strange place, possibly even a different world, it didn’t matter—because I’m beautiful!

Praise

“It’s pure Vegas, told from an insider’s perspective.”- Anthony Curtis, Huntington Press

“A whirlwind romance leads an unlikely pair of newlyweds to Las Vegas, home of every dream and nightmare they can imagine―from predatory developers to a friendly ghost. Rouff spins a guilelessly winsome fable whose charming heroine needs to have everything from her ghost’s personal history to the ritual significance of her newborn’s bris explained to her―which means that the reader gets treated to all these explanations too.”-Kirkus Reviews

“Paragraphs are replete with uproariously sarcastic similes, metaphors, and tongue-in-cheek comments. Narrative hooks, drama, unexpected openings, and cliffhanging chapter endings keep the story flowing. Complicated situations, including confrontations with neighbors and pressure from the casino, build to a significant and unanticipated climax. A fun read from beginning to end, The House Always Wins is an attractive romance with a unique ghostly touch.”-Clarion Foreword Reviews, 5 stars

“Author Brian Rouff has dreamed up a fun little tale, which he describes in a release as “part coming-of-age saga, part mystery and part ghost story.” When it comes to Nevada stories, Rouff knows his stuff. He has lived in Las Vegas for more than 35 years and has also written the Las Vegas-based novels Dice Angel and Money Shot.”- C. Moon Reed, Las Vegas Weekly

“Brian Rouff’s writing of The House Always Wins: A Vegas Ghost Story is impressive. It’s a charming, fast-paced story beautifully narrated by the main character, Anna. It contains wit, mystery, and a bit of nostalgia. Meyer reminisces about his racketeering life and how developed Las Vegas has become. Anna is a strong-minded person who possesses a sense of humour, even when her problems are serious. I thought the road trip was interesting, also the descriptions of the communities that had seen changes, for better or for worse. The author has shown the other side of Las Vegas in this must-read novel.”- Michelle Stanley, Readers’ Favorite

Review

I’m not sure I would have picked this book up to read off a random shelf, but I was very pleasantly surprised. From the love story between Anna and Aaron to Aaron’s crazy best friend Boozer, to the ghostly Meyer. All of these aspects wove together a tale that was unexpected.

I have only been to Vegas a few times but the author makes the town come alive with descriptions of the Strip, the various hotels, the buffets, the people, and the outlying towns. Even if you have never been to Vegas, you might feel like you know the town just a little bit after reading this book.

Anna is someone I could imagine being friends with in life. She is smart but snarky. She is loyal and protective of those around her, all attributes you would want in a friend. Plus she is not someone you want to trifle with as a greedy casino owner finds out after trying to oust her from her home.

Anna does give up a safe life to move halfway across the country with Aaron. But this may be the only way that she would ever make the leap and take a chance with someone she just met. While I’m not sure how many of us would give up everything for someone they just met, it works for her and for them.

The parts where the ghost, Meyer, reveals himself were quite interesting. While Meyer was telling his story to Anna, it did seem to go on forever with no interruptions from Anna which is quite surprising considering her journalistic background. His tale was interesting but it would have been nice to have a few breaks during his monologue. I’m curious about the dog, Lucky, that Anna and Aaron adopt and some comments that Meyer makes about his life. I’ll leave it at that, no spoilers!

Overall I really enjoyed the story and recommend this book.  We give it 4 paws up

House of Ashes: A Haunted Bluffs Mystery
Supernatural Mystery
1st in Series
Crooked Lane Books (November 13, 2018)
Hardcover, 336 pages

Synopsis

A family patriarch’s dying proclamation, an enigmatic disappearance, and a century-old curse converge in the shadows of a majestic home on Cape Cod’s craggy coast.

Thirty-seven-year-old painter Cassandra Mitchell is fourth-generation to live in the majestic Battersea Bluffs, a brooding Queen Anne home originally built by her great-grandparents, Percy and Celeste Mitchell, and still standing despite tragedies that have swept the generations. Local lore has it that there was a curse placed on the family and the house is haunted, though opinions are divided on whether it’s by malicious or benevolent spirits. Cassie believes the latter―but now she stands to lose her beloved home to mounting debt and the machinations of her dream-weaving ex-husband.

Salvation seems to arrive when a nomadic young couple wanders onto the property with the promise of companionship and much-needed help―until they vanish without a trace, leaving behind no clue to their identities. Cassie is devastated, but determined to discover what’s happened to the young couple…even as digging into their disappearance starts to uncover family secrets of her own. Despite warnings from her childhood friend, now the local Chief of Police―as well as an FBI agent who pushes the boundaries of professionalism―Cassie can’t help following the trail of clues (and eerie signals from the old house itself) to unravel the mystery. But can she do so before her family’s dark curse destroys everything in its path?

Review

There are some days I want to read a suspense filled book and this one did the trick. There were so many stories to unravel, personal histories to understand, and a mystery to solve that I had a hard time putting this book down each night.  I also can’t discount the descriptive words of the town, Battersea Bluffs, the residents in the town, and the area in general.

The story starts off 80 years in the past with the deaths of Percy and Celeste, Cassie’s Great Grandparents that came to the US from England.  Throughout the book we get glimpses of the past which helps us understand the spirits in the home and Cassie’s quest to find the truth about her ancestors, her sister, and her newest friends that have disappeared.  The crux of the book focuses on Cassie’s new friends, Ashley and Vince, who have suddenly disappeared.  Is there foul play involved?  Did they leave on their own accord?  Are they even who they claim to be?  Cassie formed a bond with Ashley and Vince, even if she really doesn’t know the truth about them and their past, so when they vanish she is concerned about them and their safety especially since they left their dog behind.  As a dog lover, I would have thought exactly the same as Cassie, that something has happened because they loved Whistler and wouldn’t leave him behind.

The book moves at a somewhat slower pace which is good and bad.  Good because it layers of the mystery are peeled back like an onion, but bad because I wanted to know what the heck happened to Ashley and Vince!  There are several other minor mysteries encapsulated in this book – why Cassie’s sister Zoe won’t come back to Whale Rock?  Who is behind an art purchase?  Is the house haunted or are the spirits friendly?  What is the real story of the supposed curse on the family?  All of these play a minor part in the story and some even tie in to the disappearance.

There is a little bit of a romance too between Cassie and FBI agent Daniel, but she also has a past with a deadbeat ex-husband and a high school love that she has a fling with when she realizes the marriage is dying.  There is also Brooks, aka Chuckles, who has a thing for Cassie but also dated her sister in high school.  That kind of makes him off limits in Cassie’s mind.

I will admit that Cassie does not have her life together at 37.  Sometimes you just have to wonder how people like her make it this far in life, but at the same time wonder if there is an underlying psychological issue that is the root cause of her actions.

Many questions are answered in the book with some twists I didn’t expect and we might not have known if Cassie didn’t push for the truth from those she questioned about her family and the past, and about her missing friends.

We give this 5 paws ups for keeping us in suspense for the whole book!

About the Author

An author of fiction, Loretta Marion’s writing bridges the genres of mystery and suspense and women’s fiction, always with hints of romance and humor, sometimes delving into the psychological and paranormal. She creates strong but flawed and struggling characters as appealing as the rich atmospheric settings in which the stories take place.

Loretta is a true bibliophile and has loved reading and creating with words since she was a young girl. And that affection for the written word followed her like a shadow throughout her life as she put pen to paper crafting marketing and advertising copy, educational brochures, and newsletters. But her passion for writing fiction evolved from the unlikely world of hospice. As a volunteer, she set out to establish a Legacy Story program to honor and preserve the rich heritage of the fascinating people who were soon to leave this world. The meaningful experience inspired her to create her own interesting characters and stories. Her debut novel, The Fool’s Truth, was a twisty and suspenseful mystery with whispers of romance. Her newest novel, HOUSE OF ASHES – A Haunted Bluffs Mystery, is the first in a series published by Crooked Lane Books.

Though born and raised in the Midwest, Loretta fell in love with New England and has made it the setting for much of her writing. When not whipping out words on her laptop, she is traveling, enjoying outdoor pursuits, or is curled up with a delicious new book. Loretta lives in Rhode Island with her husband, Geoffrey, and their beloved Mr. Peabody, a sweet, devoted and amusing “Corgador” (Corgi-Labrador cross).

Not So Wicked by T. A. Moorman

Published October 30, 2018 by GothicMoms Studios

YA Paranormal/Urban Fantasy

Synopsis

Caught in a realm they know next to nothing about, in a time where they’re hated for not what they are but how they look, these supernatural teens may find it harder to curve their bloodlust than they thought.

Like most teens, even those with supernatural powers and abilities, Elvira thinks that her days at Be Prepared High are a colossal waste of time. Especially Feeding 101, since she’s a cursed vampire that was born without fangs. She and her friends view most of the classes as useless since they never plan on venturing to the human realm. Why would they when Underlayes was made specifically for every factions’ safety, where they could roam free day or night with not a care in the worlds.

But just like her parents always told her, sometimes you’re put into situations you can’t control.

Elvira’s life takes an unexpected turn when a wizard hell bent on misplaced revenge kidnaps her and several of her friends. Not only does she send them with a one-way ticket to Detroit, Michigan, she sends them to a time when the tension amongst the races is at its highest. And having to deal with race issues is the one thing that has never even been so much as a thought to any of them and is the one course not on the roster.

But will everything they’ve learned in school be enough to keep them alive? What will they all do when racism stares them in the face? Most importantly, how will they get back home?

Chapter 1

Once upon a time… Really? I’m not starting my story off with that lame ass cliché. Fat chance. Not when my story is anything but classic. You can think of this as the life and times of a teenage vampire. A real one, not one that sparkles as though we were sprinkled with some type of fairy dust. Oh! And we’re born, not made by just being bitten, consuming blood from another vampire, or any other legend you may have researched somewhere. The bitten one is the most ridiculous theory any of us have ever heard of. I mean really, think about it, if everyone ever bitten by a vampire were to turn into one how could they ever go back for seconds on the same victim, er donor? Could you imagine how large the vampire population would be? Anyway, you wanna hear my story? Just sit back, grab a pint of blood, or milk, and have a listen.

First off, I don’t live in your dimension, I live in a separate one called Underlayes. Where the things that go bump in the night – werewolves, vampires, mermaids, sirens, witches, and so much more – truly are real. Underlayes has regular neighborhoods just like Earth does, we don’t live in a ton of dug out caves, or cryptic looking castles; besides the royals anyway. We used to live amongst you guys, but that was way before my time, and a story way too long and boring for me to bother with repeating. Just know that we all truly do exist and a very few of our number walk alongside you still. So, you may want to think about that before you lay down at night after bullying the school nerd or your shy co-worker. If they’re the silent and quiet type they’re more than possibly plotting your untimely demise and deciding what side-dish you’d go best with. Or what curse to place on you. Something my Mom should have thought about a long, long time ago.

Me? The names Elvira, yea, Mom and Pops have a sick and twisted sense of humor. Which when you come to think of it is actually a very good thing, since Mom was dumb enough to piss off a witch when she was preggers with me and my brother, Dracula (yup, again with the humor), Drake for short. During one of her many mood swings dear old Mom went completely off on an already pissed off witch; something about the witch crossing in front of her, and Mom thinking that would make us come out cross eyed (and you thought your mom was superstitious, Ha!). Miss Witch decided to do her one better and really did curse us both. I was granted with the gift of being the only vampire known of with NO FANGS! Since Underlayes doesn’t have hospitals bagged blood isn’t exactly just lying around. Why not just bite down extra hard you say? Probably because that leaves a big chunk of meat in my mouth and vampires can’t digest meat; we have a strictly all liquid diet. Why not just slit someone’s wrist and pour it in a cup you ask? If you were on an all liquid diet, would one glass a day keep your hunger pains at bay? NO! And draining someone completely dry doesn’t work either, unlike how they portray things in your human movies, blood clots up pretty quickly when it hits air; unless pumped up with nasty anti-coagulants which leave a horrible aftertaste and makes the blood nearly impossible to digest. So the blood shortage on your neck of the veil? Feel free to blame that on us, Mom and Dad had to feed us somehow during the experimental processes of properly bagging and storing the blood the way humans do. But no worries, they haven’t had to raid your neck of the realms in a long time now. The alchemist’s studied the components your scientists used and now have it down pact.

I’m not really sure if Drake’s curse is worst or pretty much just as bad. Him? He goes into a full-blown shock at the very sight of blood; fainting spells, seizures, black outs, the works. Though lucky for him rarely all of those at once. Lucky for Mom and Dad, he could still at least savor the taste and smell of it. But talk about being seriously dependent upon someone else, hard to nourish yourself when you can’t even look at your food. And as a baby? You try putting a blindfold on an infant, especially one with fangs, and let me know how well that works out for you. Ah, but it made for some fangtastic pranks when I was thirteen, which also ended in a lot of punishments. But they were so worth it!

So that’s us, Elvie and Drake, two of the only known vampires forced to live on bagged blood. Though Drake may get lucky one day and be able to savor a neck or two, as long as he keeps his eyes shut tight and doesn’t dribble.

Can’t we just break the curse you ask? Ask Aunt Flo that one. Did I fail to mention the witch in question was, and still is Mom’s best friend? She’s also a witch with more power than she can handle who needs to watch what she says at ALL times. The curse was supposedly never intentional and trying to undo it has proven pretty much impossible.

Mom, Trinity Alkaev, is a beautiful creature with a body neither skinny nor large, but what one describes as buxom perfection. Also, one of the most patient females you will ever meet, and a truly ferocious beast, fangs and all, when pissed. Dad, Borya Alkaev, is the strong not so silent type, with a chiseled chin and sculpted cheekbones in which I heard would give Michaelangelo a run for his money. Born after the creation of Underlayes, he’s only two hundred years old, so I never understood how he ended up with such a thick accent as if he just left the great Motherland of Russia. The exact opposite of Mom when it comes to patience, but the best dad any set of unorthodox twins could ask for. Neither of them were an only child, but both are the youngest and only surviving children from both of their respective lines. Many died before the dimension of Underlayes was made, some during the move. And Aunt Flo, I’m not even getting into that one. And as far as looks go Drake and I are a perfect combination of the two, with the exception of the fact that I have no fangs.

THUD. CRASH. SCREAM.

What in Hel’s name was that?

“Elvira Esfir Alkaev!” Moms blood-curling screams vibrated through the floorboards, “How many times do I need to tell you not to leave your blood bags lying around? Get down here and help me clean up this mess. And carry your brother to his room!”

Well there you have it, the usual beginning of a day in the house of Alkaev.

“Now young lady!”

Electric Prose Publications (September 28, 2018)

Synopsis

It might be a murder from decades ago, but it still has its claws in the present…and someone seems determined to drag Anna into it.

It’s way too soon to be returning to a haunted mansion, and Anna’s favorite cowboy ghost does his best to talk her out of it. But the opportunity to pick from the beautiful antiques left to her in a Crocker resident’s will is just too tempting for Anna and Pratt to pass up. So they’re going in…

They’re prepared to deal with a few cold spots. Maybe the occasional flickering light. But what Anna and the boys weren’t counting on was bumping up against the ghost of Josiah Bumgartner, a contemporary of Joss’ from the 1800s. And when Josiah claims the old woman who lived in the house hid his bones around the place, Anna agrees to help him find them. But something much darker is at work there. And, unfortunately for our happy little gang of antique hunters…Anna seems to have unwittingly stepped right into the middle of it.

“So when should we introduce ourselves?” asked Sarna. She sat in the passenger seat of the car.

Jasper stared out the window of the driver’s side door toward the driveway of the house. They could see little. It was night and the house sat farther back into the woods. The only reason they could see anything was because the moon and the front porch light partially illuminated the home. They’d been there an hour, parked across the road, but had seen no movement.

“Soon,” said Jasper.

“How soon?”

Jasper sighed. “We can’t just barge in there.”

“Why not?” she asked. “Why are we waiting so long?”

Jasper threw a hand up. “You know why. This may take a while. We needed to acclimate anyway. Get comfortable here. Plus, it helps to watch. Study the area and him. It will help once we make contact.”

Sarna shook her head. “We’ve acclimated enough.” She rested her elbow on the car door. The window was open and the breeze blew her hair. “You’re stalling.”

His head whipped toward her. “I’m not stalling.”

“Yes. You are. You’re nervous about meeting him, aren’t you?”

He started to speak, but hesitated.

“He’s no different than you. He’s not better than you either.”

“I didn’t say he was.”

“You didn’t have to.” When Jasper didn’t reply, she asked, “What’s holding you back?”

Jasper shrugged. “I’m not sure what we’re going to say to him…what to tell him.”

A squirrel ran across the dark driveway. Sarna tapped her fingers on the window frame. “I’d say let’s start with the truth.”

Jasper started the car and took a deep breath. “I doubt he’ll believe us.”

Sarna rested her head back. “Why wouldn’t he? He’s half-human. His father is from another planet. He has unusual abilities that no one else has. I’d say he’ll be more open to us than you think. In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if he expected us.”

“Maybe…” Jasper ran his hand through his hair. “But he won’t know whether to trust us.”

“He can sense us just as we can sense him. He’ll know.”

Jasper raised a hand. “So we tell him everything? Right up front?”

“Wasn’t that the plan?”

Jasper stared through the windshield. “I’m having second thoughts.”

“Then let’s play it by ear,” she said. “We’ll see how it goes.”

Jasper pointed a finger at her. “You let me take the lead, okay?”

Sarna widened her eyes. “What do you mean? You think I can’t handle myself?”

Jasper raised an eyebrow. “I know you can’t handle yourself. Especially after that scene at the store.”

“That guy threatened us. He deserved it.”

“He was no threat to us and you know it. You just didn’t like him.”

“No. I didn’t. Or that crazy woman that was with him. This planet has some unstable people.”

Jasper huffed. “Like ours doesn’t? Why do you think we’re here?”

Sarna didn’t answer but looked out across the dark road. “You ready to go?” she asked. “Seen enough?”

Jasper put his hand on the wheel. “Yes. I’ve seen enough.”

“Tomorrow then,” she said. “We’ll talk to him.” She shifted in her seat. “And then we get the hell out of here and go home.”

Jasper gripped the steering wheel. “Okay. Tomorrow.” He put the car in drive. “And hopefully when we leave, he’ll be with us.”

About the Author

Born and raised in Dallas, TX, J. T. Bishop began writing in 2012. Inspired by a video that theorized the meaning of the end of the Mayan calendar, J. T. began the Red-Line trilogy. The video surmised that the earth was the central hub of activity for extraterrestrials thousands of years ago. J.T. didn’t know whether that was true or not, but it did spawn an idea. What if those extraterrestrials were still here? Two years and a lot of work later, the first three Red-Line books were complete, but she’s not done. The Red-Line saga develops as she continues to write new books.

Synopsis

A meth cook is dead, and when Baxley visits her beyond the Veil of Life, she determines that the woman was murdered. Baxley pities Mandy Patterson, a single mother with aspirations for her teenage son Doodle. Unconcerned about the death of a criminal, the authorities pursue the drug-supply chain angle. Baxley worries about Doodle and vows to find out who killed his mother.

As the case grows more baffling, Baxley struggles against her attraction to Sam. Although her husband is missing and declared dead, she does not feel free to love again until she is sure of his fate.

Two suspects have the strongest motive, but Baxley has reason to believe they are pawns in a deeper game. And unless she can stop them, the world will never be the same.

Review

I have not read the previous books in this series so when I picked this up I must not have realized it was the 5th in the series. While this book could be read on its own, it is very helpful to read the previous books to understand Baxley and her talents and the other characters. There is enough detail about past books where it is not hard to understand the characters, but as is with any series you are better starting off at the beginning!

That all said, this was quite a change from the cozies books I normally read. It felt more “hardcore” vs cozy. I’m not sure if I can pin it down exactly, but it was a feeling that I had while reading the book. I enjoyed getting to know Baxley and her ability to find out from the dead what exactly happened or get answers to questions that their loved ones might have back on earth. The spirits are not always cooperative as Baxley discovers when visiting the spirit realm.

The mystery itself was well written and while I suspected who the “bad guy” was, I didn’t know why. This character just set off my radar…but when it was revealed with the all the details – WOW is all I can say! Quite a twist that perhaps I might have expected had I read the first four books but perhaps not.

There is a romance between Baxley and Sam, but Baxley holds back due to her missing husband. There is some resolution to that situation in this book and it will be interesting to see where it goes from here.

We give it 4 paws up
