Synopsis

Who is Dorothy Lyle?

She’s a woman who appears super-normal at first glance. She resides in a modest house in a small Irish town, and commutes to a typical office. She’s a lone parent who misses her children now that they are at college. Yet Dorothy is so much more than the obvious. She is a powerful psychic who has been masquerading as normal for twenty years. She is also a woman who has been avoiding men since a nasty breakup and divorce left her reeling in shock while still in her twenties.

The winds of change begin to blow around Dorothy as she approaches her fortieth birthday. An unfortunate affair of the heart means that her daughter, Diane, has distanced herself from her former home and doting mother. Dorothy wonders if some extra cash might alleviate the immediate problem.

Enter the lottery and one hundred and eight-five million tax free dollars.

How easy do you think it is to hide your true self when you unexpectedly become the fortieth richest woman in your own small country? How feasible do you think it is to avoid all dating and romantic involvements when you are single, and literally rolling in cash? How practical do you think it is to stay safe when so many of those around you seem to resent your good fortune?

This box set contains the following three books:

DOROTHY LYLE IN AVARICE – BOOK 1. Join Dorothy on the first leg of her rollercoaster journey as she discovers what an emotionally charged and complicated experience dealing with unexpected wealth can be. Clairvoyance may in handy on occasion, but it doesn’t help you decide who gets what!

DOROTHY LYLE IN COLOUR – BOOK 2. Relax with Dorothy as she begins to truly enjoy her wealth and changes in fortune. Only for her new-found pleasure to be jeopardised by a tarot card reading of all things! Once again, change is afoot, although this time it’s of a sinister nature.

DOROTHY LYLE IN HELP – BOOK 3. Watch what happens when Dorothy concedes that she cannot protect herself alone, and sets out to hire professional help. Ever wondered what it would be like to come face to face with your other half? The half you weren’t fully aware was even missing. And if he happened to be in a bad mood at that momentous moment, do you think it might colour your judgement? Read on, folks, and find out the answers to these questions and about a hundred more.

Even though Glenda’s bedroom was on the lower level of the Falcon apartment, the bloodcurdling scream from the twelfth floor was so loud, it instantly woke her. Fearful that the Sick Puppy had invaded the apartment, she sat bolt upright and switched on her bedside lamp.

Thinking only of Dorothy and with scant regard for her own safety, she leaped out of bed and rammed her feet into a pair of furry pink slippers. She glanced around for something to use as a weapon, but the only thing she spotted was a curling tongs. She grabbed it and bolted for the door.

There was a security light glowing in the hallway when she emerged from her room. All appeared well on this floor and was deathly quiet. Glenda sprinted up the stairs in a way she had not done since she was fifty and paused at the top, listening for intruders. Silence reigned. Terrified of what she was walking into, she made her way to Dorothy’s bedroom, her feet padding softly on the hardwood floors as she went. She made sure the hall light was fully on, then tapped on the door. Receiving no reply, she pushed it open, her pulse beating so rapidly she was sure she was going to have a heart attack.

In the half-light from the hallway, Glenda saw Dorothy sitting upright in bed. Her face was flushed, and sweat was trickling down her forehead. She was silent and her eyes stared sightlessly at the housekeeper. Willing herself to remain calm, Glenda put down the curling tongs and slowly approached her boss, not knowing if she was awake or asleep.

She turned on the bedside light and dimmed it to a soft glow. She doublet checked to ensure there was nobody else in the room then scampered into the en-suite. She ran a washcloth under the cold tap, picked up a second one from the clean supply and trotted back to the bedroom. Dorothy had not moved a muscle in her absence. Using the damp cloth, Glenda gently wiped away the rivulets of perspiration, then dried her employer’s face with the spare cloth.

‘Everything’s okay now, Boss,’ she said softly, as she wiped. ‘It was only a bad dream.’

‘He’s in trouble, Glen,’ Dorothy sounded calm as she replied. ‘They’re trying to kill him.’

‘No, no, Boss,’ the housekeeper did her best not to burst into tears. ‘You’re the one who’s in danger. Don’t worry, we’re not going to let anything happen to you. Why don’t you lie down now?’

Dorothy obediently lay back on her pillows. Her eyes were wide open and her pupils fully dilated. Glenda was not sure if the other woman even knew she was in the room with her.

‘I’m going to sit here until you fall asleep,’ the housekeeper said reassuringly. ‘Close your eyes, Boss. You need your rest. We have a big weekend ahead of us.’

The words sounded totally inane to her ears, although they seemed to do the trick. Dorothy moved her hand until it rested on her heart then slowly closed her eyes.

‘So much blood,’ she murmured. ‘I think he got away this time, but it was a narrow escape.’

‘I’m sure he’s fine,’ Glenda replied helplessly. ‘Try not to think about blood. Think about the lovely new house. Is it true you’re getting a waterbed?’

‘A waterbed,’ Dorothy sighed dreamily. ‘Big enough for a basketball team. Wait until you see it, Glen.’

‘I can’t wait,’ the housekeeper replied truthfully. ‘Bel mentioned a rotisserie, although I expect she was teasing me. She’s naughty like that.’

‘You’re going to love that too,’ Dorothy whispered sleepily. ‘Goodnight, Glen. Sleep well.’

‘Goodnight, Boss,’ the housekeeper replied, as she dashed away a tear.

Dorothy’s breathing changed and Glenda knew she was asleep. There was a wing-backed chair in the corner of the room. She dragged it closer to the bed and made herself comfortable.

‘I’ll sit here for twenty minutes in case you have another dream,’ she told the sleeping form. Dorothy was blissfully unaware of the worry she was causing the other woman and slept on. This time she dreamed of flying.

About the Author

ella carmichaelElla Carmichael was born in Ireland in the 1960’s, but only toyed with writing when she was young. Toyed might be too kind. She goofed about with a pen and paper when she was a child and teenager, but never wrote anything longer than a silly poem. She says, “You really have to fight for your dreams in this life, and I didn’t fight for mine. The thought of doing so never even crossed my mind back then.”

From the age of 20 she worked in offices, and often used to ask herself if there might be more to life than the daily grind. This is one of the few things that she has in common with Dorothy Lyle, the main character of her series, The Miracles and Millions Saga. Dorothy is cheesed off with the 9-5 life and hopes for more. Little does she realize what’s around the corner. Be careful what you wish for!

Ella got the idea for M&M back in 2010. There was lottery fever all over Europe that autumn, yet at the same time there were photographs appearing in the papers that showed hundreds of individuals standing in line for free lunches at the Bow Street mission house in Dublin. It was hard for her to make sense of it all, yet somehow she knew it was important.

She was in a very bad place in her life in 2010, after ending a relationship with a most unsuitable man. Figuring that she had little to lose, she began to write as a form of therapy. Carmicheal tends to be a dabbler by nature, yet when it came to writing she found she was as focused as one of those drones we hear so much about. It took more than thirty years to do it, but she became a writer in the end. Ella hopes any budding authors who are reading this will draw inspiration from that. It’s never to late to give it your best shot.

Once the die was cast, characters literally began to materialize in front of her. The strongest back then was Dorothy, although it certainly didn’t stop with her. The Maddox character appeared over her bed one morning in a cloud of dry white ice. In the earlier drafts, Jack was very much the iceman, but Ella decided to soften him up and make him fall madly in love. Just because. It progressed from there. More and more characters began to show up and soon she had a series on her hands instead of just one book.

Publishers and agents aren’t interested in a series unless the writer follows a number of very strict criteria. Carmichael has broken those rules. Her books are best read in order. The story progresses in each one, and spans the two year period between January 2011 and December 2012.

Once she understood that no publisher would touch her, she decided to go it alone. She felt she was too old to sit around and wait for a letter that will never drop onto the doormat. She signed up with KDP and uploaded every completed manuscript. At the time of writing this bio she has not yet uploaded Book 10. She is struggling to let it go…

★ Take a look at my review of Unravel below:

This was a short suspense story that had me wondering how it was going to turn out for Chella and Mitch. apparently someone wants them split up and their relationship is tested to the max. Will Chella continue to believe and trust Mitch?

Only thing I wasn’t crazy about were the graphic love scenes, so I skimmed through those sections. But that is my preference, I don’t need to read all the details! but outside of that, the story was engaging. I haven’t read the other books so will need to go back and pick those up some time soon!

Things You Might Not Know About My Book

By Kathryn Long

A Deadly Deed Grows has a few secrets beyond the plotted mystery. I find it interesting to learn more about books I read, the trivia or quirks that belong to them. Here’s a list of ones you may not know about mine.

1) This was my first and only attempt so far at romantic suspense. I’ve written mysteries for years. Sometimes a bit of romance is thrown in. It’s hard for me to write outside my comfort zone, so I guess this would be as far as I’d go!

2) The original story started as a project in the 2008 NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) conducted every year during the month of November. Anyone can participate. The objective is to write a 50,000 word novel in thirty days. If you succeed, you get a nice certificate. It’s fun. It’s crazy. And the result for me was a first draft that had to be transformed, revised, and practically reborn before it was ready for publishing!

3) The setting for the novel is the Florida Panhandle where Port St. Joe, Cape San Blas, and Apalachicola are locations where events take place. I’ve vacationed there on the Cape several times and I found it inspiring to use as a romantic setting – warm, tropical, the beach, beautiful sunsets. What more could you ask for?

4) One of the places where Mira and Sean dine is the Sunset Bar and Grill in Port St. Joe. My hubby and I have eaten there. They have excellent seafood. I’ve always enjoyed my meal, unlike Mira in the story. Of course, in her case it had nothing to do with the food!

5) The local library carries a copy of my book, and this past spring I visited. I spent a half hour with the library’s reading group. It was a fun time with a great group of ladies!

6) The restaurant on the cape where Mira and Sean stop for ice cream is really called Coneheads. I only changed the name because of what happens there in the story. I didn’t want to give it a bad reputation! Coneheads is a nice little place to eat a meal, have dessert, and even take your dog along. Cape San Blas is totally a pet friendly beach. You’ll find doggies everywhere!

7) The novel started out with…let me see. Five points of view? Like I said, it went through many changes! My editor suggested I narrow it down to three – Mira, Sean, and the evil antagonist Bradley Lane end up telling the story.

Okay, that’s it! If you want to view photos of the cape and surrounding area, visit my Facebook page. Or better yet, take a trip there! It’s a beautiful place to vacation.

About the Author

kathryn longKathryn Long’s passion is writing mysteries, creating the intricate details and weaving them together into the clues which the reader will enjoy collecting to solve the crime. However, she’s worn many hats over the years – bookseller, teacher, mom, wife, and author. Many of her works include Native American elements and hints of the paranormal. She loves a scary ghost story!

Her writing inspiration began with reading about Nancy Drew and the heroines of romantic suspense authors such as Victoria Holt and Mary Stewart. Her first creations were short stories meant to entertain anyone who’d listen or read. Playing the guitar led to song lyrics, which she insists taught her the rhythm and pace of writing prose.

Writing took a serious turn several years ago when she had her first book published. To date readers can find her self-pubbed cozy Lilly M Mysteries, and her traditionally published work: paranormal mystery, Dying to Dream, and latest, a romantic suspense, A Deadly Deed Grows at online retailers and in bookstores.

Always striving for better and greater achievements, Kathryn has recently signed with literary agency, Golden Wheat Literary and agent Jessica Schmeidler who is working diligently to sell Long’s latest mystery,Grave Maker Blues.

When writing and the creative muse take a break, this author loves to travel, watch Castle, and of course, read mysteries. Oh, and there’s always an author event or two she will attend in order to – you got it – talk about mystery. Kathryn lives in a small burg located in northeast Ohio with her husband and little pooch, Max.

Genre: Contemporary Romance/Romantic Suspense

Pages/Words: 507/ 137,000

Format: Ebook & Paperback

Synopsis

Eight years after her fiancé was murdered, attorney Megan Kole has fully reconciled two areas of her life: her intelligent son, who never knew his father, and the thriving law practice that is her late father’s legacy. The remainder of Megan’s world stalled in a paralyzing grief that she effectively compartmentalized until a transfer to Seattle brings a handsome, mysterious billionaire into her life.

Daemon Ros has been an outcast since the day he was born. His parents’ lavish but emotionally-vacant lifestyle prompted him to assert his financial independence at a young age. His ailing brother is the only connection he allows to penetrate the vault he has built around his heart, until a devoted mom and her precocious son introduce him to the true meaning of family bonds.

But a chance legal encounter where Megan acts as mediator in a Ros family business dispute leads to far more than either expected. When a shocking truth leads to a love affair between Megan and Daemon that is forbidden in every conceivable way, the barely-restrained chemistry that scorches between them threatens an injunction on everything and everyone they hold dear. As pasts cross, memories threaten, and lies surface in a trial far more deadly than anything inside a courtroom, an arbitration of the heart could prove the only way for them both to make it out alive.

Excerpt

The following evening, I slip into a dress with a plunging neckline, but I have second thoughts and change into a loose-sheath mini dress instead. I’m not sure how I feel about Chase all these years later. So much has changed in my life since college. I don’t want to convey the wrong impression by wearing an overtly sexy outfit.

I pull into the porte cochère of a restaurant named Canlis. The valet welcomes me and takes my keys. Through the trees, Emerald City’s lights reflect against the water. The building is contemporary with lots of glass, and I already know the views will be superb.

Beyond the glass doors to the building, Chase waits, smiling. I may not have been on the dating scene for the last eight years, but I can tell by the look of this place that he’s trying to impress me. It reeks of money—the type of place that would be reserved for a proposal or an extremely special occasion. If this is what he has planned for the first date and there will be a second it makes me wonder what’s next.

Moments later, we’re seated in this cubed jewel of a place, surrounded by glass windows.

“This is spectacular. Thanks for inviting me.”

“I thought you’d like it. The owners are our clients. They were booked tonight, but thanks to them, I get to come whenever I want.”

And here I was thinking I was so special.

“Nice. Lucky you. So you bring all your women up here?”

He nearly chokes on his wine. “All these years and you haven’t changed. Still as feisty as ever.”

“Have you transferred your college tendencies to the firm, Mr. Hot-Man-on-Campus?”

“You remember that?”

“How could I forget? At one point, you had dated every single girl in our Global Studies class.”

“Except you.”

“Looking to add me to your score card?”

A nervous stutter leaves his lips. “You’re not going to go easy on me at all tonight are you?”

“Should I? You’ve brought me to this beautiful place. We know each other fairly well. Why don’t we just skip through all this mellifluous crap and get straight to your intentions.”

“Spoken like a true lawyer.”

“No. Spoken like a mother.”

“I assure you my intentions are hon—”

A woman wearing a skimpy black dress interrupts us at that moment, “Chase, nice to see you so soon. Still on for Valentine’s day?”

I glare at him. You were about to tell me something about honorable intentions? Valentine’s Day is a few days away.

He looks at me, completely flushed.

She leaves, scrutinizing me with a provocative stare.

“Look Chase, I know by now you’ve gone and looked me up, and found out all you can about me. Therefore, I know that you know what the last few years of my life has been like. So if you want to do this, realize that I’m a mom. While, for you, the days of being a playboy are still very much alive, it’s not for me. I have a son, and I’m a responsible mother. Let’s enjoy the rest of tonight and reminisce as old friends.”

Guest Post

I’ve often been asked what inspires me when I write my books or is there a specific author that inspires my writing, and the short answer to that is no.

Sometimes, the inspiration comes from something I see in the news, or a documentary I’ve watched. I’m writing my 5th novel now, and I still hear my editor/mentor in my head saying Conflict! Conflict! Conflict! So if I see something in the news I twist it in my head to… I wonder what would happen if… a D.A. fell for the murder suspect that he’ll be taking to trial. Love, Lies & The D.A. came out of that thought.

Sometimes an idea will be triggered from one book, and I will put it aside for my next. That was the case while writing my second book Love, Lies & The D.A. The relationship my heroine Jada McLean shared with her brother Bobby was so close, one of those what if scenarios popped up in my head and so Love M.D. was born—Imagine if a woman fell in love with the doctor she thought was responsible for her brother’s…

When my editor then (now editor/mentor) read the very first draft of my very first book ever, Uncorked she told me that as it stood, it lacked conflict. Meaning—the battles we or our characters have within ourselves (inner conflict) and the outside forces that create conflict in our world (outer conflict).

Another way she put it was: What is the one reason in the world that these two characters should never fall in love?  Or why should these two characters not be together? Once I have that answer, I have my next book and it’s crazy, but when I start the book, I never know how the problems will work themselves out.

Since then whenever I start a book, all I know is the major conflict in a book, and it can usually be summed up in one of those imagine if or I wonder what situations.

In my most recent release, A Problematic Love many of my readers fell in love with two of the characters from my previous book and I got tons of Facebook messages from them literally begging for their story.

The only problem was one of the characters they wanted to know about was dead, and I am not a paranormal romance author so he was out. The other problem was because they knew the outcome of their story from my previous book, there would be no real suspense.

But, I wanted to make my fans happy, while still making sure I could answer the question what is the one reason in the world that these two characters should never fall in love. And that novel A Problematic Love was born and it gave me all sorts of problems and conflicts in many ways.

Unfortunately I can’t share more, the blurb was the hardest to write without giving the juicy details away but let’s just say, this relationship was soooo problematic I had the think long and hard about how to sort their conflicts out.

So, what inspires Rebecca Rohman when she writes? In a word—conflict! The harder the problem in the hero and heroine’s relationship the more fascinated I am to answer wrapped up in a steamy romance within the pages of my books.

Pimpernel

Pimpernel by Sheralyn Pratt

They seek him here; they seek him there. For centuries, the elite of the world have sought the Pimpernel everywhere. Some want to kill him, others want to hire him, but Jack Cavanaugh knows that the love/hate relationship comes with the job title.

At present, Jack is trying to dismantle an investment scheme centered in Las Vegas, but “trying” is the operative word. It’s been a month since he put the face of the scheme behind bars, yet the scam is still going strong. As Jack tries to uncover who has stepped in as the new head, what miniscule evidence there is all seems to point him back to Claire Ramsey, an introverted PhD student studying at UNLV.

If ever there as an unlikely head of a investment scheme, Claire’s it. She has a genius IQ, but from all Jack has seen, Claire’s intelligence is as much a blessing as a curse when paired up with her acute OCD. Claire can barely make conversation with the cute guy down the hall, which makes it hard to believe she could be the charismatic salesperson who is getting international businessmen to invest $5—50 million a pop.

So what is Jack missing? What is the real story behind Claire Ramsey? And once Jack learns it, will he be able to walk away?

Review

I thought this was a fascinating book with several twists and turns that I didn’t see coming and were a bit of a surprise. I’m not going to say too much because it will give away part of it but not to worry, what I am hinting at happens fairly quickly into the book.

When introduced to Claire, I immediately thought of the show “Lie to Me” because she was very in tune with micro-expressions people make. She also reminded me of “Rainman” because of her OCD tendencies and because she could remember long streams of numbers when not on her meds.

I also liked how a small group of people took down the “bad guys” (with the help of some others…but don’t want to give away that info either!).

I really enjoyed getting to know Jack, Ren, Margo and Claire. Hopefully there will be more books featuring these characters.

We give this 4 paws up!

SheralynAbout the Author

Some describe Sheralyn as a girl who’s been around the block and worked at every shop. This isn’t far from the truth. Writing is what she loves most, however. There’s a magical power in stepping into new perspectives time and again, and seeing the world through different eyes. Few things increase empathy more than walking in another’s shoes for 100,000 words or so. At least that seems to be the trend so far.
Some random things to know about Sheralyn:
* She’s a wanderer (geographically)
* She can write a novel, but doesn’t have the attention span for one page in a journal
* She vehemently disagrees with Stephen King’s stance that authors should not watch TV
* She is pretty much incapable of sleeping before midnight

Excerpt

“Thank you for coming with me. I don’t know if I would have been able to do what you did.” Matthew smirked, trying to lighten the mood. “At least, not with the same results.”

Cali blushed and Matthew almost lost it. He wanted to touch her, to crush her body against his and kiss her within an inch of her life.

Instead, he backed toward the elevators. “I’ll see you tomorrow.”

She grinned and began walking to her car.

He hesitated, then shook his head and continued toward the elevator.

As he waited for the elevator to reach him, he heard an engine rev. A small smile pulled at his lips as he thought of Cali heading home.

The elevator dinged right as a squeal of tires caught his attention. He whirled around in time to see a dark blue sedan he didn’t recognize speed up the exit ramp.

His heart pounded in his chest as he took off at a full-out run.

Cali.

Review

I don’t think I read this book before it was rewritten and content added…so have nothing to compare it to which isn’t a bad thing.

This is romantic suspense and there is definitely both of those elements in the book. I’m on the fence about how fast the romance part seemed to happen – seems like it is always so fast and so early in books. Now that isn’t to say that Cali and Matthew were in bed early on, but there was an attraction between the two from the moment they met. I think the tension between the two built for a bit before they succumbed to the passion they felt for each other.

As for the suspense portion…..who was stealing the shipments? This had to be an inside job…not to give too much away, but there are several people involved. I figured out one pretty easily….well suspected really. I was a bit surprised by some of the others involved.

All in all an enjoyable book with a few twists and turns (all good) and I really felt like the characters had some depth to them. We give it 4 paws up.

About the Author

sherri hayesSherri spent most of her childhood detesting English class. It was one of her least favorite subjects because she never seemed to fit into the standard mold. She wasn’t good at spelling, or following grammar rules, and outlines made her head spin. For that reason, Sherri never imagined becoming an author.

At the age of thirty, all of that changed. After getting frustrated with the direction a television show was taking two of its characters, Sherri decided to try her hand at writing an alternate ending, and give the characters their happily ever after. By the time the story finished, it was one of the top ten read stories on the site, and her readers were encouraging her to write more.

Nearly eight years later, Sherri is the author of eight full-length novels, and two short stories. Writing has become a creative outlet that allows her to explore a wide range of emotions, while having fun taking her characters through all the twists and turns she can create.

Synopsis

Seven days have passed since Naples real estate agent Megan MacKenna has heard from her twin sister, Madeline, who was vacationing on the beautiful, Caribbean island of St. Croix. Though authorities are not convinced there is a case to solve, Megan knows with all of her heart something happened to Maddy. When Megan receives a direct warning to leave the island or end up like her sister, she turns to the only person who has taken her seriously since she arrived, Gabe, a breakfast cook at a local diner.

Undercover DEA agent, Gabriel Walker has been building his cover for months, waiting for the opportunity to work his way into the infamous Torrez crime ring. When Megan shows up asking questions and Gabe realizes her twin’s disappearance might be linked to the Torrez men, he has to convince her to go back to Florida before she becomes their next victim.

The closer Megan gets to the truth, the more Gabe begins to suspect he is missing a huge piece of the puzzle. And someone is closing in on Megan…

Excerpt

Megan peered out at the vast expanse of ocean gleaming in the bright morning sunshine before her. The turquoise waters seemed to go on forever. From the Caribbean Airways in flight map, she had noted the islands of Puerto Rico, St. Thomas, and St. John were in the far off distance. She had been told a faint view of the densely populated St. Thomas could sometimes be seen on a perfectly clear day, but no matter how she strained her eyes, she couldn’t quite see it today.

Had Maddy hopped on a sailboat and continued her travels to another island as the police officer had suggested? It wasn’t like Maddy not to check in. Her cell phone had been going straight to voice mail since the last photo Maddy had sent, and according to the cell company, the cell phone was out of service range. Something had happened to her sibling. The last communication with Maddy had been an unexplained picture of an iguana. No message, no text, nothing. Just an enormous, slimy, dragon-resembling lizard. Megan sunk her head to her chest. Where in the world was her sister?

“Everything okay, Miss?”

Startled from her hopeless thoughts, Megan sat upright at the sound of the low voice. Her eyes scanned the length of the man standing before her, and she pursed her lips together. She guessed he was probably about six-foot-two.

As she sat silently, observing him, the man repeated his question, “Are you okay?” His tone bordered on cautious, but concerned.

“Everything’s fine,” she finally managed with a tight voice.

With a smile, his concern faded away, and he reached behind his back to untie a grease-spotted apron. He folded the apron up, pulled out a chair at the table right next to Megan’s, about a foot and a half from her, and sat down.

An internal alarm went off, making Megan feel extremely uncomfortable with his proximity, and she fidgeted with her hands as he stared at her, finally forcing them into her lap. How could a voice so soothing go with a gruff-looking character like him? And what in the world was he doing sitting down so close to her?

Cali.
