Brody Cover

Synopsis

Historical western filled with steamy romance and the rawness of a growing country.

A letter from a grandfather he’s never met has Brody Yates escorted across the country to work on a ranch rather than entering prison. But his arrival in Oregon proves prison may have been the lesser of two evils. A revenge driven criminal, the high desert, and his grandfather’s beautiful ward may prove more dangerous than anything he’s faced on the New York docks.

Lilah Wells is committed to helping others: the judge who’d taken her in years ago, the neighboring children, and the ranch residents, which now includes the judge’s handsome wayward grandson. And it all gets more complicated when her heart starts ruling her actions.

What the judge called the ranch buildings looked like a small town to Brody. He stood in the wagon counting the buildings. A two-story ranch house, a long low building Lilah pointed out as the bunkhouse, a cabin she said Buster Malone, the foreman, lived in with his wife and their two children, and two large barns. That didn’t even count the smaller buildings scattered around between the other larger buildings. This looked like a town compared to the sparse little buildings that had dotted the one street in Venator.

The wagon stopped in front of the large barn. A tall man with broad shoulders, large arms, and a leather apron walked out of a small addition to the barn.

“Didn’t expect you back until dark, Judge.” The man took hold of the horse on the left side.

“I didn’t expect to come back to thievery.” The judge climbed off the wagon. “Brody, help Lilah down,” he barked.

He leaped out of the back of the wagon and held his arms up to the young woman. He didn’t usually jump when given an order, but when the order allowed him to put his hands on a pretty girl, he didn’t balk.

She blinked a few times, then slowly leaned down into his upraised hands. He caught her at the waist and lifted her down. She wasn’t a wispy girl. He could feel her body was hard from working. He’d held several girls who worked hard every day of their life. They had muscles as hard and strong as men.

He set her feet on the ground and continued to study her. He liked the smattering of freckles, it gave her a youthful appearance. She licked and opened her full rosy lips.

“You can let go of me. My feet are on the ground.”

He released her and stepped back. Glancing around, expecting a lecture from the judge for holding onto Lilah too long, he found the old man in a deep discussion with the man who still held the horse.

USA Today Bestselling Author Shanna Hatfield writes character-driven romances with relatable heroes and heroines. The Romance of Cowboy

cowboy ready to rope

I don’t know about you, but there is something about seeing a cowboy in a pair of dusty boots with his hat settled on his head that makes my heart pitter-patter.

Growing up on farm where I always had a horse to ride, my love for cowboys and the western way of life came naturally.

My oldest brother spent weeks (sometimes months) at a time working on remote ranches next door to the edge of nowhere. He would arrive home full of exciting tales of daring that made me sit up and take notice. He also sometimes brought home a fellow cowpoke in need of a home-cooked meal and a few days of rest before they headed back to the ranch. I’d sit in rapt adoration, listening to them talk about a way of life that seemed to be all but disappearing.

They always smelled like leather and horses and sunshine – a scent I still love to this day.

When I began writing sweet romances, it was a natural fit for me to make most of my heroes cowboys. Some of my stories take place in historical settings, others are modern day, but the common thread is that the men live by an unspoken code I always associate with cowboys.

In The Christmas Cowboy and Wrestlin’ Christmas, the first two books in the Rodeo Romance series, neither heroine wanted to fall for a cowboy. In fact, they fought quite a valiant battle – but as they say, sometimes resistance is futile.

In the third installment of the series, Capturing Christmas, Celia McGraw is determined not to fall for anyone… then she meets Kash Kressley.

Capturing Christmas 2

“Someone like you should be smart enough to know better than to do something that stupid, Miss McGraw.” The man frowned at her as he held her across his lap, riding over to the fence, out of the way of the horses and the men on horseback behind them.

Too stunned to reply, Celia gulped and continued staring at him, gradually comprehending she hadn’t been killed.

At least she assumed she hadn’t died, unless angels wore dusty cowboy hats, dark blue chaps, and were breath-stealing handsome.

Those engaging eyes bore into hers, making her heart skitter in her chest while an entire bushel of butterflies burst into flight in her stomach.

She observed her rescuer. He sat tall in the saddle and had muscles to spare, or so she presumed from the way he easily hoisted her off the ground and onto his horse. A hint of light brown hair peeked out from beneath the brim of his hat. The pale blue shirt he wore almost matched the fascinating shade of his eyes.

Celia experienced the most unreasonable urge to run her fingers along the stubbly expanse of his cheeks, down his square jaw, and over his strong chin. Mesmerized by his full bottom lip, she inhaled a deep breath and nearly choked.

The very scent of him hinted at a lethal combination of freshly fallen snow, a warm winter fire, and sweet seduction rolled into one incredibly enticing package.

About to tumble headlong into a yearning unlike any she’d ever known, Huck ran up to the fence and yanked her back to reality.

Excerpt

May 16, 1875

A fierce wind whipped Grace Ann Cunningham’s hair, yanking at the long strands and pulling them free from their pins. She squinted through the haze of the blustery day and stroked her bulging belly, trying to comfort her baby, who seemed just as agitated by the sudden storm.

Her back ached from sitting on the hard buckboard bench all these miles—much less comfortable than the plush sleeper car they’d enjoyed last week on the train from Illinois to Cheyenne.

She frowned at the dark roiling clouds that had moved in and quickly blotted out the sun.

What had been a pleasant uneventful morning was now turning into an ominous and unsettling afternoon on the open prairie.

Grace sucked in a breath as the baby again kicked her ribs in protest. Her sweet husband’s sun-browned face tightened in concern as he caught her gesture. He pulled on the reins of the two draft horses—sturdy ones they’d bought yesterday in Cheyenne. Surefooted, the seller had told them. And Monty knew his horses, so she trusted his purchase and assurance that they’d

haul them without incident to Fort Collins. But looking at her husband’s face now, seeing the subtle telltale signs indicating that he hadn’t expected this squall nor felt at ease about it, gave her pause. And her normally talkative husband had been too quiet this last hour, eyeing the sky and listening to the roar of the nearby river, as if hearing their complaints and trying to suss out nature’s intentions.

“The baby all right, darlin’?” He scooted over on the buckboard seat to look her over, then took her hands in his.

Warmth from his gentle grip comforted her, but not as much as the love streaming from his adoring gaze.

“I think so,” she told him, then smiled as he laid his hand firmly on her belly.

Grace thanked the Lord in a silent prayer for this wonderful man who’d married her in a simple ceremony last September. All those years she’d lived with her doting aunt Eloisa in the boardinghouse back in Bloomington, she never imagined she’d be blessed with such happiness.

When Montgomery Cunningham had first stepped into the parlor to take a room before starting college at Wesleyan University, she’d been a shy, giggling girl of ten. Neither of them foresawthe love that would spark six years later when he showed up again unexpectedly, about to head west to explore and survey lands unknown.

Monty closed his eyes, his hand still on the baby in her womb. She imagined him communing with their baby, speaking to it the way he spoke to rivers, to trees, to the land he traversed by boat and on horseback and on foot. Something had happened to him when he returned from the Hayden Yellowstone Expedition. He had changed from boy to man, yes—but it was more than that. He had fallen in love with the West, and with rivers in particular. Although he’d studied geology in college with John Powell, water captured his heart, and he sought out trips that had him navigating whitewater. Nothing made his eyes sparkle more than talking about the way water moved and sang as it cascaded and carved the face of mountains and spilled into waiting valleys. Well, except the way he looked at her.

Monty may have loved rivers, but Grace knew he loved her more. So much more, for he gladly gave up his exploring to settle down and marry and start a family. Although, Grace thought moving to the new town of Fort Collins, Colorado, was adventure enough. She hoped he’d come to see it that way as well and not be into the wild.

Excerpt

Montana, 1888

Elias stood nervously waiting for the train to pull into the station.  He looked down the tracks for any indication that the wait was almost over.  Of course the train was running late.  This, the biggest day of his life, had him pacing and constantly wiping the sweat from his palms onto his trousers.  Maybe I should have dressed a little better, he thought, knowing that his everyday work clothes certainly weren’t fit to greet his future bride.  But he’d run out of time this morning, and he couldn’t very well head to town in his one good suit without arousing suspicions with his family.  He wanted this to be a surprise. He needed this to be a surprise for the simple fact that his family would likely try to talk him out of it.  Nobody in their small town of Hollow, Montana had gone the route of taking a mail order bride, and Elias knew they would likely judge him for not finding a bride in a more traditional manner.
He had tried the traditions of courting and marriage before, with little success.  He married his sweetheart Rachel when he was 20 years old out of equal parts love and obligation, and their relationship ended when she died shortly after their daughter, Lottie, was born.  He later learned of Rachel’s infidelity and confirmed the fact that Lottie was not his blood child.  He didn’t care one bit if she was his; he was her father and he cherished her more than anything in this world.   But she needed a mother.  At just eight years old, Lottie was taking on too much responsibility caring for him.  Elias didn’t want her to feel obligated to take care of his needs.  She needed to run and play and make her own adventures in the vast fields of their cattle ranch. She didn’t need to spend her days doing laundry or cooking his meals. She needed to learn and grow as a child was meant to do. And it was this need that drove him to look for a mail order bride.
Elias looked down the tracks again. Nothing. Several other families seemed just as anxious as he was for the train to arrive. Perhaps they had relatives coming to visit. Maybe they were waiting for a special package or shipment to arrive. He noticed that no other single men stood there waiting for the train.  Of course he didn’t recognize several folks waiting on the platform, so it was possible he wasn’t the only one waiting for a woman. His small town had grown tremendously since the train set up station here just over a year ago.  New people were moving into town and setting up much needed businesses. They now had a dressmaker, a tailor, a hotel, several restaurants, a feed store, and a blacksmith. Two saloons had opened as well, though Elias didn’t appreciate the types of men and women they attracted. But the town appeared to be flourishing with new people and new opportunities.  They had recently completed construction on a new church, and a new schoolhouse would be built this spring.  Several folks had claimed their own homesteads to try their hand at ranching. None were as successful as Elias’s cattle ranch, but he appreciated having more neighbors for fellowship and assistance.
Despite the growth of the town, Elias had minimal luck finding a bride.  Most women who came to Hollow were already married and planning to settle. The ones raised here were either too young or too old to marry a widowed rancher.  That didn’t leave him many options.  He’d watched his brother marry his wife, Hetty, and their happiness was worthy of admiration.  In the five short years they’d been together they’d grown their family with three young boys and another child on the way.  They’d built a life together on a foundation of love and faith. Elias wanted the same thing…for himself and for his daughter.  If the train would ever arrive maybe he could make that happen.
He didn’t expect immediate love from his soon-to-be bride. They barely knew one another, after all.  But he hoped that with time their fondness for one another would grow and possibly turn into a relationship built on mutual respect and love.  He prayed that would be the case. Elias reached in his pocket and took out the advertisement he’d placed last year.
Widowed rancher seeks wife to share land and home in Montana.  Must be of moral character and possess a love of children.
He had received only one response from his advertisement from a young woman named Rebecca. She had written to him stating her desire to come west to settle and start a family. They had corresponded only a handful of times before he had sent her the necessary funds to travel from her home in Ohio to his home in Montana.  Elias had learned she was 22, had no family, and was used to the hard work of a ranch, having been raised on a farm herself.  She had described herself as rather plain, but Elias didn’t care.  Rachel had been beautiful, and look where it got him. Having a wife full of beauty wasn’t important; he cared more about what was on the inside – her character, her faith, and her ability to love and accept Lottie.
Elias nearly jumped from his skin when he heard a sound in the distance. The train? he thought. He removed his hat and ran his fingers through his light brown hair. He adjusted his shirt and used his fingers to remove a bit of dust sticking to his pants. In just a few minutes his future wife would step off the train.  He took a deep breath and smiled to himself. This was just the beginning.

None of them looked remotely like a Pinkerton man.  A Pinkerton agent would no doubt be wearing a proper suit.  But the only male who looked the least bit citified was Ike Bruhn, home from his honeymoon with his new bride.
Sandy jiggled at his side.  “Ya see ’im?”
“Nope,” Jerico grunted.
“Maybe he missed the train,” his deputy suggested.
“Naw, must be here somewhere.  Look for a gent in a gray suit.”  Pinkerton men always wore grey to blend in with crowds.  He scanned the thronged station platform again.
“Check inside, Sandy.  Maybe he slipped past me.”
His deputy jogged off and Jericho perused the crowd a third time.  Nothing.  Maybe Mr. Detective had chickened out at the prospect of fingering an elusive outlaw gang that was robbing trains.  He narrowed his eyes and turned to check the station once more when someone stumbled smack into him.
“Oh, I am terribly sorry.”  An extremely pretty young woman carrying a green-striped parasol gazed up at him.
Her voice sounded like rich whiskey sliding over smooth river stones and for a moment Jericho forgot what he’d come for.
She only came up to his shoulder and on her dark, piled-up hair sat the most ridiculous concoction of feathers and stuffed birds he’d ever laid eyes on.
He sucked in a breath to apologize, then wished he hadn’t.  Goddam she smelled good.  Soap and something flowery.Made his head swim.
He stepped back.  “’Scuse me, ma’am.”
She waved a gloved hand and peered at his chest.  “Oh, you are the sheriff.”
“Yeah, I am.”
She smiled and his mouth went dry.  “You are just the man I want to see.”
Jericho swallowed.  “You have a problem?”
“Oh, no.”
She twirled her parasol.  You have the problem.  I have come to help.”  She waited, an expectant look on her face.
“Help?” Jerico echoed.
“Of course.”  The whiskey in her voice was now sliding over some pointy rocks.  “I am Madison O’Donnell.  The Smoke River Bank hired me to help catch the gang robbing their gold shipments.”
Jericho stared at her.
“I believe you were expecting me?”
He snapped his jaw shut.  He sure as hell wasn’t expecting her. The last thing he’d expected was this frilly-looking female with her ridiculous hat.  In her green-striped
dress and twirling her parasol like that she made him think of a dish of cool mint ice cream.
“Whatever is the matter, Sheriff?  You have gone quite pale?  Are you ill?”
He jerked at the question.  Not ill, just gutshot.  “Uh, yeah. I mean No, I’m not ill.  Just . . . surprised.”
She lowered her voice.  “Most Pinkerton clients are surprised when they meet me.  It will pass.”
Hell no, it won’t.
Madison O’Donnell picked up her travel bag.  “Shall we go?”
Not on your life.  “Uh, my deputy’s inside the station house.  ’Scuse me, ma’am.”  He strode past her without looking back.  Inside, he found Sandy talking to the ticket
seller.
“Charlie says nobody’s come in except the two Weatherby women.  You want me to hang around and – ?”

Synopsis

When a legendary predator decides prize horses should be on his menu, Kate takes the advice of her neighbor ranchers and hires a big game hunter to track the mountain lion and remove the threat. The hunter arrives to take up the trail, but instead of the seasoned older man she expects, he’s young and impossibly sexy.

Freshly back from deployment to Afghanistan as a special forces operative, Jakob needs to clear his head of the horrors of war. When his uncle is injured, Jakob steps in to fulfill the older man’s commitment to hunt down a mountain lion on the other side of the state. The prospect of several days in the wilderness with only his horses and dogs for company sounds like the ideal opportunity. Except the infuriating female rancher insists on going along for the ride.

Excerpt

A faint noise drew Jakob from the twilight that precedes waking, straight into full alert. Unsure what disturbed him, he lay still and allowed his eyes to open a bare slit. Just his luck that mountain lion would be prowling through camp. Unable to spot anything out of place, he sat up, careful not to move too quickly and get his head injury in an uproar again.

Splashing, louder than the stream flowing over the rocks, drew his attention. Fascination froze him in place for an instant, forcing him to just watch. At the creek, Kate straightened and squeezed water from her hair, then flipped it back to swing down her naked back. Water droplets clung to her pale skin like crystals, refracting the light and mesmerizing him.

She half-turned to retrieve something from the ground, revealing the curve of one breast. The sound of Jakob’s agonized groan must have carried, because she straightened and turned to face him, moving too quickly, and lost her balance.

Head wound forgotten, he leaped up and dove across the small camp area in an attempt to catch her before she could fall into the icy water. She recovered just as he reached her, and stood facing him, breathing hard. Something in her face had changed and for the first time since meeting her, Jakob felt as if she actually saw him. The unreachable Ice Queen was gone, and in her place…

About the Author

As an English major in college, I took a summer job as a proofreader for a small town newspaper, and got hooked on editing. I also worked my way through college training horses. After graduation, I landed a job for a small independent editing firm, and stayed there for 15 yrs. An old friend, Lucian, approached me to edit his special fiction project, and I got hooked. After an insane few months editing his Dom Wars series for him, Lucian convinced me I should try my hand at writing as well. I’m his co-author for Round Six, the final Dom Wars installment, and we will co-write the White Knight Academy series as well. And in Sept 2014, I’ll release my debut solo work, an Erotic Western with BDSM elements, “Big Game: A Hunted Love Novella”. In addition, I have a military series in the planning stages.

Title: One Last Letter
Author: Pema Donyo
Genre: Historical romance, Western
Pages: 171

Synopsis

A romantic hardened by reality…

Evelyn Lancaster turned her back on her love for ranch hand Jesse Greenwood when she was sixteen to pursue a career and marry into wealth that could save her father’s struggling ranch. Now twenty-three, she works hard to keep the property afloat, but no suitor has stirred her heart the way Jesse did. After her father falls ill, she needs all the help she can get to keep the ranch running.

A cowboy returning to what he left behind…

After making his fortune, a newly wealthy Jesse has returned home to see his younger sister married. Still smarting from Evelyn’s rejection, he finds the tables have turned, and now only his investment could save the ranch that he vowed to never step foot on again.

When he agrees to help her salvage her family legacy, they must overcome their pride and painful past to work together. As long-held emotions rekindle, Jesse pretends indifference, only to admit his true feelings in an unsigned letter left on Evelyn’s porch.

Evelyn finds the missive and writes back, beginning a furtive correspondence. She dares to hope her mystery admirer is Jesse, but then another man comes forward to claim the letters as his own. Will one last letter give them the courage to say yes to love on the wild Texas plains?

Deleted Prologue

Texas

“You have to promise me.”

“I promise.”

“No! Say it like you mean it.”

“How else am I to say two words?”

“With emotion! With passion!”

“Reckon I don’t need words for that.” Jesse flipped Evelyn over on the pasture and pressed his lips against hers. She arched her body toward him as his hands fell to her hips.

“Not so fast.” He grabbed her wrist in a light hold, and she laughed. He pulled her tighter to his chest, and after an exaggerated huff of breath, she settled beside him.

She caught herself smiling as she nestled next to his body on the green grass. A slight breeze blew through his hair, ruffling the brown locks that fell forward into his face a bit. Jesse’s sharp cheekbones had always seemed aristocratic to her. The angular planes of his face didn’t belong on a cowboy, they belonged on a prince.

Evelyn brushed her fingertips over his clean-shaven jaw. “Still. Promise me.”

He pulled her against him until she was sitting on his lap. “I promise you.”

“Say it! Say the promise.”

He sighed. “All right, fine. I promise you, Evelyn Lancaster, Eve, the crazy one…”

“Hey!”

She felt a lock of her hair pull as he wrapped one of her wavy tendrils around his finger. His voice was low. “I promise I will never stop writing to you while you’re away in the Old States.”

Her heart thudded in her chest at the reminder. The East Coast seemed so far away. She leaned her forehead against his. A desperate plea tugged at her lips. “You cannot make me go to that female seminary. Why must one travel so far for school?” The tears she’d managed to hold back threatened to surface. “I cannot leave you. I cannot leave the ranch.”

“The year will be over before you know it.” Jesse’s thumb brushed over her cheek. She grabbed his hand and kissed it, then leaned forward to peck him on the lips.

He tilted up her chin between his thumb and forefinger. “Now Elle, you have to promise me something.”

“What?”

“You won’t forget me.”

As if she could! She leaned closer against him, burying her face against her shoulder. His shirt fabric felt rough against her cheek, but all the dust and dirt of the ranch could have covered his clothes and she still would have embraced him. “Forget you? Never.”

“Promise?”

“I promise you, Jesse Greenwood, that I will never stop loving you.”

He averted his eyes, as if working up the courage to say something. “What if we just eloped? Run off to California and never come back?” He kept his tone light, but Evelyn thought she could spot a hint of sincerity in his eyes.

She laughed. Surely he’d been teasing. She tried to cup his cheeks with her hands, but he inclined his head away and she dropped her hold.

When he spoke again, his voice sounded bitter. “No doubt your father will pressure you to find someone else. Someone who owns land, no doubt.”

“There is no one else! I want you.”

“I don’t belong in your world.” His tone chilled her heart like a winter night. “Your father knows you could make a better match than with a ranch hand.”

She shook her head with resolve. “You and me, forever.”

Excerpt

Evelyn Lancaster wanted to run away as fast as possible.

It was a mistake. It was one colossal, gargantuan mistake. Worse than Athens ordering the death of Socrates. Worse than Persephone being kidnapped by Hades. What did she think she was going to do? Seconds ticked by as she found herself unable to say anything more. Her mouth felt dry. What was she supposed to say?

He’d changed, more than she would have ever imagined possible. The boyish frame was filled out, and extra years working on the ranch had defined the muscles in his arms under his coarse brown shirt. He’d even grown taller—past six feet, she guessed. His shoulders were broader, and his cheekbones seemed more pronounced than before. His face carried even more of an aristocratic air, but his body seemed undeniably more masculine.

Yet the expression was the same. Jesse Greenwood’s same reticent, admiring expression hadn’t changed as he continued to stare at her like she was hand-blown glass. His brown hair still flopped lightly in front of his eyes, causing him to brush it away.

“Hey, Eve.”

She winced. She hadn’t heard that nickname since she’d left Hamilton, Texas, for the female seminary in Massachusetts. No one there ever called her Eve. During classes she’d been “Miss Evelyn” and “Miss Lancaster.”

She cleared her throat. She’d anticipated the awkwardness but not the simple difficulty in forming words. “I returned home a few hours ago. I thought I should stop by and say hello. Is Preston here? Are any of the other ranch hands here?”

Jesse blinked. He didn’t respond for a few seconds. The adoring expression morphed to one of disbelief. “Eve, did you get my letters?”

She bit her lip. “I did.” Evelyn resisted the urge to embrace him. Doing so would only make it harder to answer his questions with a lie. Instead, she stood rooted to the spot. She wouldn’t move a muscle; there was too much she could regret. “They were nice letters. Thank you. But I burned them.”

His eyes became cool steel, all traces of admiration in his eyes melting away. “Burned them? But you . . .” His jaw was set. “Eve, why didn’t you write me back?”

“I was busy.” She tore her eyes away from Jesse’s searing gaze and tried to look behind his shoulder. The sinking feeling in her chest was surely no more than an echo of the past. She needed to leave before all rationality left her. “Just let all the other ranch hands know I stopped by.”

“Stop. Eve, I said stop.” Strong hands grabbed both of her shoulders, and she looked up in alarm toward his furrowed brow and confused expression. His voice was so much deeper than she’d remembered. “That’s all? You couldn’t once respond to me?”

She struggled to push against him, but he held her in place. His tone was rough. It increased in volume, rising with each word that tumbled out of his mouth.

“What about the promise I made to you? When you told me that you wanted to marry—”

“Enough!” Evelyn yanked herself out of his hold and glared. She breathed deeply, as if the extra air would give her the courage she couldn’t truly conjure up. “I remember what you are referring to. I did receive your letters. I thank you for them. But I did not respond to you because whatever we had before I left for school . . .” She gulped. The polite tone of indifference faded. “This has to end.”

Excerpt

Standing quietly in an upper bedroom of the beautiful Garland Mansion, Hattie Morran gazed out the open window over the lush, green grounds known as the Silver Creek Estate.  Her wedding dress and auburn hair fluttered lightly in the soft Missouri breeze as she sighed dishearteningly.  The cold steel of her Colt 45, nestled among the flowers of her wedding bouquet, belied the picture of a beautiful bride awaiting her once in a lifetime moment.

Without breaking her gaze, she began talking to her sister, who sat silently on a sapphire blue settee in the middle of the ornately decorated room.  “So help me God, Dakota,” Hattie said with great conviction, “if Abner does not come across with my demands this time, this will be the shortest marriage on record!”

Knowing Hattie was not one to mess around, Dakota leaned forward with concern.  “What do you plan to do, Sis?”

Turning in Dakota’s direction, Hattie slowly lowered her bouquet, reached in, and cocked the revolver.  “Put it this way . . . if he doesn’t, the man is goin’ to meet up with an untimely death . . . or I am goin’ to shoot off the only thin’ in life that Jackass holds dear.”

Hearing the revolver being cocked, Dakota replied in shock, “You wouldn’t!”

“Oh wouldn’t I?  Just you hide and watch, Sister Dear.  Believe me, I’ve taken just about all I’m goin’ to take from Abner Garland.  At this point, I’d just as soon kill him than look at him!  Of course, I can’t do that because I love his Mama so much, and even though he is a despicable person, he is her son.”  With her feelings for Abner’s mother, Rebecca Garland, calming her, Hattie reached back into her bouquet and uncocked the revolver.

Tilting her head to one side, Dakota let out a long, labored breath.  “To tell the truth, I can’t blame you, Sis.  With all that Abner has put you through, I understand perfectly your wantin’ to kill him.  I just hope everythin’ goes exactly as his mother has planned.”  Then, rising to her feet and walking in Hattie’s direction, Dakota held up a small handkerchief edged in lace.  “Is this the blue one?” she asked, staring straight ahead.

Hattie looked down at the pale blue handkerchief and then at her sister.  “Yes, Honey, it’s the blue one, thank you.”

“I really wish I could see you in your weddin’ dress, Hattie,” Dakota said somberly.  “It’s times like this when I really miss bein’ able to see.”

Hattie thought for a moment and fell silent.  She was so used to her sister’s condition that she tended to forget how hard it was for her.  Dakota Jayne (often referred to as Cody) had tragically been left blind by an unknown illness at the tender age of six, but through time, sheer determination, and a staunch refusal to be limited by the hand she had been dealt in life, Dakota had learned to cope very well.

To the casual observer, Dakota appeared perfectly normal.  Strangers, in fact, were stunned when informed of her blindness, as her beautiful blue eyes looked healthy and moved about freely yet deliberately, appearing to survey everything with the thoroughness of a sleuth.  In addition, the family made sure that her surroundings remained constant, and in doing so, Dakota knew instinctively how many steps to chairs, tables, and the doors.  Her familiarity with her environment coupled with an extremely keen sense of hearing that allowed her to place people by the sounds that they made enabled Dakota to move about with the greatest of ease.  It was only when she was in new or unfamiliar places that she became unsure of herself.  On the arm of a trusted friend, however, she handled herself with poise and elegance, never letting on to her handicap.  Always the life of the party, Dakota was quick-witted, had an effervescent smile, and was even a delightful dancing partner.  Looking at her sister with deep admiration, there was no doubt in Hattie’s mind that Dakota’s strong character and deep faith in the Lord allowed her to persevere where others would have surely failed.

The silence between them was broken as Laville, their elder sister, burst into the room and rushed to the window.  Raising her hand and pointing enthusiastically at the guests who were arriving, she exclaimed, “Hattie!  Hattie!  You won’t believe who just arrived!  It’s the Governor, his wife, and their party from the Capitol!”

Before Hattie could respond, Rebecca Garland and Hattie’s mother, Minerva Morran, entered the room as well.  Rebecca, a dainty woman with blonde, flowing hair, pale blue eyes, and fair complexion, was the epitome of elegance.  Smiling brightly, she replied to Laville’s youthful enthusiasm with her patented southern flair.  “I should certainly hope so!  I invited him, as well as many other dignitaries of Missouri society.  This will, after all, be the state’s most prominent wedding of the year.”

Rebecca was right; the wedding between her son, Abner, and the beautiful, young Miss Hattie Morran was indeed known as the social event of the summer of 1896.  Rebecca had spared no expense and Minerva had left no stone unturned in making this mockery of a wedding appear genuine.

Joining Laville and Hattie at the window, the two mothers looked down over the stunning gardens of Silver Creek.  The gardens were by far the most awe-inspiring part of the estate, as they were the home to nearly every tree, shrub, and flower known to man.  Rebecca went to great lengths to keep the vast gardens immaculately maintained, and in doing so, it was often referred to by the locals from the nearby town of Gallatin as a latter-day ‘Garden of Eden’.  For today, however, the usually tranquil gardens were alive with activity, as they served as a magnificent backdrop for the wedding.

Gazing down into the shaded court area, Rebecca secretly wondered if there would be enough seating, as it appeared there were more people arriving than had been invited.  But then, as if she had been reading Rebecca’s mind, Minerva nodded her head reassuringly and whispered, “Everythin’ is perfect.”  It was a beautiful sunny day this July 25, and the illusion that they had worked so hard to create was at last complete.

Turning their attention from the outside, Rebecca and Minerva set their gazes upon Hattie.  Moving directly in front of the young bride-to-be, the two mothers looked adoringly at Hattie, bathed in the morning sunlight.  It’s warm, gentle rays streamed through the open window, surrounding her in a soft, white aura, perfectly accentuating her auburn hair.  A petite girl with a tiny nineteen inch waist, Hattie stood only five foot two inches tall.  On this day, however, with the morning sunlight cascading down around her in such splendid grandeur, she appeared larger than life.  Rebecca sighed as she took in the picture of beauty in front of her.  “Hattie, my dear, you are breathtaking.”

Flattered, Hattie smiled graciously, turned, and looked outside again.  She, like the rest of the family, could not get enough of the elegance of Silver Creek.

During the next few minutes, the women busied themselves making final touches on the wedding dress.  As they did, Hattie’s mother, Minerva, a moral, strong-willed woman with dark brown hair and blue eyes, thought back to the terrible morning when her husband, Newton, an immoral, average-sized man with red-brown hair, brown eyes, and rugged masculine features, informed her of the circumstances which eventually led up to this whole sordid affair.  In her mind, she could still hear him screaming at her as she sat silently at the kitchen table, turning her coffee cup around and around in her hands.

Pacing back and forth like a caged lion in the small kitchen of their modest farmhouse, Newton’s voice boomed like thunder.  “Damn it, Minerva, do you hear me?  Hattie has no choice in the matter!  She will marry Abner, and that’s all there is to it!”

Aghast at her husband’s behavior, Minerva implored, “Stop screamin’ at me, Newton!  And lower your voice, the girls are still in bed.”  He glared at her with eyes as cold as a Siberian winter as she pleaded desperately.  “Tell me, Newton, how in the world did you ever get yourself into such a mess, and why in heaven’s name did you involve Hattie?  She is only fifteen and too young to marry anyone, let alone the likes of Abner Garland!”

“And just what the hell is wrong with Abner?  His mother, Rebecca, is your best friend.  The boy’s well educated, and he comes from the wealthiest family in the state of Missouri, if not the whole damn country!”

Minerva knew trying to reason with Newton once he’d made up his mind on something was like beating her head against a brick wall.  “What’s that got to do with the kind of man he is, Newt?  As I recall, you used these same words last year when you tried to convince me to let Laville marry John Anderson, and look what a horrible mess that turned out to be.”

Disgusted, Newton muttered, “Hattie ain’t nothin’ like Laville, and you know it.”  Walking to the open back door and venting his frustration, he kicked it shut, shaking the walls of the kitchen.  “You know damn well Laville never intended to cooperate with me.”

“And just what makes you think Hattie will?”

“Hattie’s always been obedient.  She’ll do exactly as she’s told.”

“And what do you have your money grubbin’ hands after this time, Newton?”

“Never you mind!”

Disgusted that he wouldn’t level with her, Minerva slammed her cup down and held the determination of an ox.  Weary of her husband’s deplorable behavior, she had taken all she was going to take.  “Well, the fact of the matter is that she’s only fifteen years old.  As for Abner’s mother, she may be my best friend and Heaven knows she loves Hattie like her own, but what has that got to do with your puttin’ our daughter in the hands of a man like Abner?  You know, just as I do, that Rebecca had to send him back East to school because she and Jess couldn’t do a thin’ with him.  He’s worthless, Newton, and you know it!”

Feeling he was losing ground, Newton tried another tactic.  “Now Minerva, you’re takin’ this all wrong.”

“Oh, no, I’m not!” Minerva replied in anger.  “Hattie ain’t somethin’ for you to bargain with, especially if it’s to get you out of some kind of trouble.  I won’t stand for it!”

Newton was absolutely furious as he glared at her and again raised his voice.  “Listen, Woman, I’m not askin’ you for your permission!  I’m tellin’ you!  Hattie will marry Abner Garland!  I’ve already given Jess my word on it.”

Minerva pushed her chair away from the table and stood in defiance before her husband.  “Your word!  Hah!  Since when has your word ever amounted to anythin’?  Get this through your thick skull, Newton.  The only way she’ll marry Abner is over my dead body!”

In the bedroom above the kitchen, Hattie, Dakota, and Laville listened in disbelief.  Laville turned to Hattie.  “Did I hear what I thought I heard?  Please tell me this isn’t happening again!”

Angrily throwing her hairbrush on the bed, Hattie tried in vain to control her emotions.  “You heard right, Sis.  It looks likes Pa ain’t gonna be happy till he ruins all our lives!”

Worried for the safety of their mother, Dakota tried to calm her sisters.  “Look, you two, I know you’re both angry, but I think we better get downstairs.  Laville, find Curtis and have him go for the boys.  I heard them leave for town a while ago, but they couldn’t have gotten far.  I got a feelin’ we’d better get ‘em back to the house before this all blows up in Mama’s face.”

As Laville opened the door to Curtis’s room, she found him frightened and huddled with his three younger brothers on the floor.  He, like them, was tired of being scared of their tyrannical father.  With urgency in her voice, Laville instructed, “Curtis, go after your older brothers, and make it fast.  They’re on their way to town, but you should be able to catch them if you hurry.  Don’t bother going down the stairs and through the kitchen.  Instead, crawl out your bedroom window, across the roof, and onto the shed.  Take my buggy; Robert said he would have it ready for me early this morning.  When you find the boys, tell them I said to hightail it back here as fast as they can.  Then, get right back up here and make sure that Mark, Barry, and Miles stay safe.”

Curtis, sensing the seriousness in his sister’s voice, was out the window and gone before she could say another word.  After making her way back to Hattie and Dakota, Laville grabbed a robe then waited while Hattie and Dakota got themselves presentable, as they had all been in their sleeping garments.  “I’m the oldest, so I guess I better do the talking,” Laville quipped, as the girls made their way out of the bedroom and started toward the stairs.

Not about to let Laville fight her battles for her, Hattie grabbed Laville’s arm and whirled her around so that they were face to face.  “Oh, no you won’t, Laville!  This is about me.  This time I’m doin’ the talkin’!”  Moving quickly, they started down the stairs and reached the bottom just in time to see their Pa drawing back to strike their mother.  Terrified, Hattie ran to her mother’s aid, jumped in front of her father’s flailing fist, and screamed, “No, Pa, stop!”

Following through without a second thought, instead of striking Minerva, Newton struck Hattie square in the face.  The blow came with such force that she spun across the room like an out of control top, struck the wall, and fell into a heap on the floor.  Laville rushed past their father to Hattie and, bending down next to her, wiped away the stream of blood that was now trickling from her sister’s mouth.  Angry beyond the point of common sense, Laville screamed, “What’s wrong with you, Pa?  Have you completely lost your mind?”

Showing no remorse, Newton stepped toward them, his hand drawn back again.  “Shut up, Laville, or you’ll get some of the same.”

Hattie, knowing that it might come to this, had slipped her pearl-handled revolver in her robe before coming downstairs.  As she reached in and pointed the gun toward the picture of evil that was her father, shivers ran down her spine.  It was as if she was looking at the devil himself.

Seeing the revolver, a smirk crossed his face.  “You wouldn’t dare use that on your own Pa, now would you Hattie?”

“Just try me,” Hattie said daringly, as Laville helped her to her feet.  Then, quite abruptly, she pulled the trigger twice, splintering the wooden floor directly in front of his feet.  Jumping back to the window, Newton could see Hattie’s jaw firmly set and her eyes aflame with anger.  “That’s the last time you are ever goin’ to hit one of us!”  Holding her revolver steady, she ordered, “Stay right where you are, Pa.  The boys will be back any minute, and when they are, we’ll get to the bottom of this mess.”

Testing Hattie again, he took one step forward but stopped when he heard Minerva call out his name from behind.  Turning around, he saw that she was now standing in the doorway with a rifle.  “Stop where you are Newton, or so help me God, if Hattie doesn’t shoot you, I will.  She’s right; we’ve taken all we’re goin’ to take from you.”

“Who do you think you’re kiddin’, Minerva?  Why, the law would hang you.”

Looking at him as if she could see right through him, she replied, “Don’t you think for one minute, Newton, it wouldn’t be worth it, to get you out of our lives.  I’m plum fed up with your takin’ advantage of us.  As far as I’m concerned, the depths of Hell couldn’t be any worse than you are.”

Showing no emotion, he replied arrogantly, “You can’t hold these guns on me forever.”

“You’re right, Pa,” Dakota said matter-of-factly.  “We could just go ahead and shoot you.  Then we could drag your body out in the woods, bury you, and all of us swear we didn’t know what happened to you.”

“Stay out of this, Cody; this is none of your affair.”

“Wrong, Pa!  Everythin’ that happens to us is my affair.  Don’t think we didn’t learn our lesson after what you did to Laville.  No one said anythin’ when you married her off to John Anderson.  But this time we ain’t standin’ by while you try to ruin Hattie’s life, too.  How do you think we felt when we found out that you forced Laville into marryin’ John just so you could get your hands on their farmland?”

Before he could answer, the back door swung open and Newton’s three older sons, Shannon, Robert, and John, stepped inside the kitchen.  Shannon, being the eldest, was very protective of his mother and sisters.  Demanding an answer, he asked, “What the hell’s goin’ on, Pa?”

Crossing his arms in front of him, Newton refused to speak.  Gaining composure, Minerva explained the situation, and as she did, the boys became enraged.  Taking in all that his mother had to say, Shannon could only shake his head in disbelief.  “What are you after this time, Pa?”

Newton had a reluctant look on his face, but he knew now with the whole family present he’d have to fess up.  “If you must know, I owe Jess Garland a lot of money.”

Shannon’s blood was boiling.  “You can’t keep expectin’ the family to bail you out every time you get yourself into trouble, Pa.  We love Hattie too much to see you use her to pay off your gamblin’ debts.”

Newton glared at his eldest son.  “She has too as she’s what Abner wants, and if I was to give him everythin’ we owned, it still wouldn’t be enough.”

“My God, Newt!  How could you do such a thin’?  How much do you owe ‘em?” Minerva questioned, heartsick.

“More than we got.  But that ain’t all.  Jess said if Hattie doesn’t marry Abner, Laville and Dakota just might meet up with some sort of accident.”  Newton was lying, but with the whole family in opposition of him, he was desperate.

Stepping farther into the kitchen, John couldn’t help but think that there had to be a better way to solve the situation.  “Why don’t we just go to the Sheriff, Pa, and explain the whole thin’?”

Thinking quickly, Newton retorted, “Wouldn’t do us a bit of good.  It’ll just be our word against theirs, and they carry a lot of weight in this county.”

Discouraged but not willing to give up, Minerva slowly lowered her rifle.  “I’ll go to Rebecca myself.”

“I wouldn’t if I were you.  She can’t control Jess or Abner, and you know it.”

“Then it’s hopeless,” she conceded, her voice full of despair.

Newton, seeing things turning in his favor, took advantage of the situation.  “As I see it, we ain’t got no choice in the matter.  No choice at all.”

Hattie looked at Laville, then Dakota, who were both now sitting at the old wooden table in the middle of the room and couldn’t bear the thought of anything happening to them.  Seeing no other solution and wanting desperately to protect her family, she said reluctantly, “If that is what it will take to get us out of this mess, then . . . then I’ll marry him.”

Review

I thought this book was a sweet western romance! Apparently this is a series but isn’t one that necessarily has to be read in order but always good to not spoil anything!  I think the previous book is about a different family member and his story on how he met his wife, but I don’t think that it has to be read to enjoy this book.

Communication seems to be the biggest problem between Hattie and Maxwell (isn’t that always the case?!) plus Hattie is very proud and stubborn and Maxwell has a problem talking to women, which is actually kind of sweet!  Despite everything they work through their issues to find love.

We give it 4 paws and suggest it next time you are looking for a western romance book.
