Synopsis

When a gang of crooks with a wicked sweet tooth hits the resort town of Warner Pier, it’s up to chocolatier Lee Woodyard to give the hungry rascals their just desserts.

A frantic phone call from her right-hand woman, Dolly Jolly, brings Lee to the scene of a break-in at the Warner Pier jewelry store next door to her business, TenHuis Chocolade. To her shock, the main suspect is Mike Westerly, Dolly’s boyfriend and the watchman recently hired to prevent break-ins. Dolly hopes Lee can help straighten out this crazy misunderstanding before Mike ends up behind bars.

Even crazier, the thieves left behind the most valuable item in the store! In fact, nothing was taken except for some snacks. It’s another series of burglaries by a group the media has dubbed the Main Street Cookie Monsters. They’ve been hitting shops selling everything from sunglasses to shoes but taking only sweets. It all seems pretty funny—until the discovery of a dead body. With Mike once again a suspect, Lee must stop one very sour killer before someone else comes to a bitter end.

Despite their good deed in Savannah, Mabel Gold’s ghostly friend Irma remains stuck in Purgatory. So when the plucky sixty-something divorcée pulls her haunted vintage camper into a Nashville campground, she’s expecting Irma to accompany her on the tour of the Grand Ole Opry. But as they two-step into a honky-tonk for some live tunes, they’re shocked to encounter two lost spirits stranded there for the past twenty years after their double homicide.

Though St. Peter hints that solving the long-closed case could get Irma through the Pearly Gates, Mabel has little time to uncover the culprit before she’s due to boot-scoot off to the Badlands. But when shady financials surface and threaten to ruin the honky-tonk owner’s run for governor, trying to help the poor souls pass on could land the fearless sleuth in a whole heap o’ trouble.

Can Mabel collar the killer before she’s singing country-western with choirs of angels?

About 10 years ago my husband and I set out to travel in an RV. We were fortunate to have a Bluebird and we towed our ford explorer. At first, I was apprehensive about traveling in an RV but now that I look back on the adventure I am happy I got over my fear and enjoyed the ride. We gook thousands of pictures and saw so much of this country that you just have to see in person – the Grand Canyon will bring you to tears – wildlife – people you meet out on the road that you would not meet if you just stayed in your safe zone.

I would tell anyone to just do it but don’t wait.

It certainly has come full circle in that I am now writing a series and traveling in an RV is the setting for the series.

We hope to get back out on the road while we can but in a Tesla Cybertruck and one that is self-driving. I tried driving the Bluebird once and it was just too big to handle. It’s also like a boat you just don’t stop on a dime – you have to slow down and stop carefully.

This time it will be more of a destination instead of traveling all over the west. We will pick a location and stay there probably for most of the summer. At least that’s the plan and then head back to a warm climate for the winter.

Like my character Mabel, I will need to learn to drive the Cybertruck or at least not freak out and be comfortable with self-driving. Probably something in the next 5 to 10 years we will see self-driving become more commonplace. Like cell phones and the internet. It will open the world for older adults who otherwise would have to give up driving and the independence that comes with driving a car.

The interesting thing was when we took off in the Bluebird, we stayed in a campground in Fort Lauderdale which is where my husband and I met and got married and we started our life almost 50 years ago. That’s where I decided it was time to write a book. So, I did in the city where it all began. I’m still writing and now camping with Mabel and Irma until I get back out on the road. You never know where life will take you – just keep moving.

Synopsis

When a teenaged girl disappears from an insular small town, all of the community’s most devastating secrets come to light in this stunningly atmospheric and slow-burning suspense novel—perfect for fans of Megan Miranda and Celeste Ng.

The town of Whistling Ridge guards its secrets.

When seventeen-year-old Abigail goes missing, her best friend Emma, compelled by the guilt of leaving her alone at a party in the woods, sets out to discover the truth about what happened. The police initially believe Abi ran away, but Emma doesn’t believe that her friend would leave without her, and when officers find disturbing evidence in the nearby woods, the festering secrets and longstanding resentment of both Abigail’s family and the people of Whistling Ridge, Colorado begin to surface with devastating consequences.

Among those secrets: Abi’s older brother Noah’s passionate, dangerous love for the handsome Rat, a recently arrived Romanian immigrant who has recently made his home in the trailer park in town; her younger brother Jude’s feeling that he knows information he should tell the police, if only he could put it into words; Abi’s father’s mercurial, unpredictable rages and her mother’s silence. Then there is the rest of Whistling Ridge, where a charismatic preacher advocates for God’s love in language that mirrors violence, under the sway of the powerful businessman who rules the town, insular and wary of outsiders.

But Abi had secrets, too, and the closer Emma grows to unraveling the past, the farther she feels from her friend. And in a tinder box of small-town rage, and all it will take is just one spark—the truth of what really happened that night—to change their community forever.

Review

I have mixed emotions about this book. The characters are small-minded, racist, homophobic, and misogynic. Very few of the characters are likable outside of the children. Even then I’m not too sure because they aren’t painted with the best brush either. What happens throughout the book could happen anywhere and the twists kept me guessing.

The book does jump back and forth in time, but not in any specific pattern. We see bits of pieces from the past that shapes the characters into who they are today.

What we know – Abi has gone missing but what we don’t know if she is dead or alive. There are some tidbits of information that might lead you to believe one way or another as information is shared. What unfolds would shock most towns and people. I know I was dumbfounded that people can act this way (and there are too many examples to list) because it goes beyond human decency. I suppose I shouldn’t have been too surprised because there are many people out there that live in a bubble and don’t know what to do outside of that bubble.

I did feel for Noah, Abi’s brother because of how he was treated by his father for being gay. And his brother Jude? That was an even sadder story. Their whole family was dysfunctional from day one and it did not get any better. Emma is Abi’s best friend and seems to be the only one that really wants to find out what happened to Abi. Unfortunately, what she uncovers will devastate many.

It did take me a bit to get into this book. It was harder for me to read because of the characters. At least the story is somewhat wrapped up at the end, but not completely.

Overall, we give it 3 1/2 paws.

Review

Such a great series set in the Low Country. This book in the series features, Becca and Happy (Harper), who are visiting Palmetto Island because Becca doesn’t have good news in her life and wants to give her daughter a memorable summer. There are also other main storylines featuring Hannah, Sydney, and Amelia.

The crux of this book focuses on PTSD, fear, sorrow, and joy. The phrase “it takes a village” could not be any more appropriate for this book. No one should have to live alone or without the help of others, but sometimes it takes the influence of those around you to help one realize that life isn’t meant to be traveled alone. We all need the support of friends and family to make it through.

I like that the characters deal with real-life issues. Anyone reading this book will probably be able to relate to one or more of the characters and their situation. Of course, there are also characters to not like or be frustrated with their actions. But it adds conflict and tension before everything is resolved.

We give this book 5 paws up!

Stay positive. That’s everyone’s advice, as if enduring optimism is some kind of elixir. Lately, positive doesn’t cut it.

The antique clock’s ticking pulse fills the room. It’s been thirty- two seconds since he’s said a word. I watch his reflection on the sleek mahogany desk scan my resume up and down. Up and down. What’s he looking for? Waldo? We’ve already established I’m well qualified for this position. I cross my fingers, keeping them hidden beneath my padfolio.

This guy’s view of the city stretches all the way to the East River. The window alone is half the square footage of the apartment I share with two roommates. He shifts again in his plush leather chair, grazing his bristly mustache with his fingertips. Twelve seconds later, he peers over the rim of his glasses and draws in a slow breath while I hold mine. Monty Fuhrmann is one of the top investment banking firms in the world. Landing a position here would mean being a part of larger- than- life deals with a paycheck to match. It’s more than a job. It’s a dream come true.

Okay, Delia. Stay positive.

“Mrs. Reese,” he says, sliding the stiff paper forward.

“It’s Miss, or you can call me Delia. It’s very important that you know I’m a Miss. I’m not married. No children. I don’t even have a boyfriend. Who needs the distraction? Am I right?” I say as if handing him a good- ole- boys brandy.

I clear my throat, resenting the fact that as a woman in this industry it’s better for me to admit that I have no life. And no prospect of having one either. He’s probably wanted to ask me ever since my resume came across his desk. But legally . . . he can’t.

He says nothing.

Maybe if I tell him that I’ve spent the last three nights in bed with a pint of Häagen- Dazs, he’ll hire me on the spot.

“What I mean to say is that work is my life, and I will make this job and this firm my life if you hire me.” My fist falls softly on my padfolio. I wish I had the balls to bang it on his shiny desk.

He raises his brow. “Right . . .”

Right.

Of course that’s all I get.

It’s typical in this industry for men to dismiss women. To them, we’re temporary fixtures around the office, bound to meet and marry Prince Charming, experience the miracle of childbirth after a miserable nine months of sobriety, then ultimately crumble under the pressure of balancing mommyhood with an intense career. We’re gone as quickly as we arrived; off to spend our mornings watching cartoons with small people, cleaning messy faces, and running bake sales with the other career abandoners. But that’s not me. I have as much potential as the applicants wearing neckties. And I’m dedicated. The most dedicated, in fact, and yet, I have to sit here beaming pleasantly and plead my case.

Mr. Mustache returns a smile. “Your resume’s very impressive. Any firm would be happy to have you on.”

That sounds promising.

“It was nice to meet you, Miss Reese. We’ll let you know.”

Right. Translation— we’re not interested. I catch myself frowning and immediately force a smile. Staying positive is like a full- time job in itself. I was optimistic after I was laid off, hopeful when I went on my first five interviews. But I’m not sure how much longer my bank account will stay positive.

He rises and extends a hand. I jump to my feet so I can meet his eye line, or meet it as best as I can. These heels give me an extra three inches.

I muster my solid I’m as good as any man handshake like it makes a difference. “I’ll look forward to your call.”

Walking back through the polished waiting area, I see nothing but suits and ties. The only other woman is the receptionist behind the front desk. I swipe my lips with a fresh coat of Fierce Crimson on the elevator ride down to the thirty- second floor. That’s where I’ll find Eric. He’s my friend and colleague from the Howard Brothers Group. We were laid off along with a bunch of others after the merger. That was four months ago. Eric’s been employed here for three. Rows of desks set up with bright LED monitors and ergonomic keyboards fill the floor. Young underwriters talk into their headsets while typing away into sophisticated software programs. I catch tiny fragments of their conversations— capital, prospectus, issue price, shareholder, syndicate— dialogue that always energizes me. That’s how this industry is. Never a dull day. For a moment, I forget I’m not one of them anymore and hold my head high. This is my playground.

When I was little, Giggles candies were my favorite— specially the watermelon flavor. Every paper wrapper had a silly saying written on the inside, almost like a funny fortune cookie. My favorite one said, “A bank is a place that will lend you money, if you can prove that you don’t need it.” Out of all my fourth- grade friends, I was the only one who got the joke, which made me feel special. Granted, my dad is a financier with his own firm.

He took me to the Giggles candy factory once for a private tour. I sampled so many sweets that day that I couldn’t stomach dinner. Dad explained that it was his company that helped Giggles grow so big that lots of kids like me could enjoy those funny treats. His eyes radiated pride as we walked the factory lines that day. That’s when I decided that I wanted to help companies grow too. And I wanted to be the best at it because if I were the best, maybe he’d look at me with the same pride. That’s why I came to Wall Street, to play with the big boys, which now that I think about it doesn’t leave much room for big girls like me. And my current circumstances are proof of that.

Eric peeks around his own monitor, catching me with his alluring eyes. My breath gets stuck in my throat. I don’t usually go for the whole blue- eyed- blond thing, but he makes my temperature rise like a bull market.

“Hey, Delia!” There’s something thrilling about the way he says my name. I could listen to him say Delia all day long and never get sick of it. “Did you kill it? You’re starting Monday, right?”

Kill it?

Sure. A little piece of me dies every time I have to fake it twice as much as any guy interviewing for the same position.

Review

I was drawn to this book because I totally understand where Delia was coming from trying to break into the world of finance as a woman. That was me a few years back. It is definitely a “boys” world and it is hard to be taken seriously. It can be done but the attitude that surrounds you can be tough to take at times.

Delia just wants to be recognized for her intelligence and what she can bring to the table. However, she is often overlooked because of her gender and that is a mistake for those companies because they can’t see what they are missing out on by not hiring her. In a strange fluke, she is changed into a man (on her birthday no less). It is quite comical to see her trying to deal with the male anatomy and how it sometimes has a mind of its own. She also isn’t sure how to act around the guys as a guy. I had to chuckle at some of her attempts to start a conversation with the guys around the water cooler. What does she try and talk about? You’ll have to read the book to find out and perhaps it will garner a chuckle or two from you.

What it all boils down to is having the confidence to be yourself and go for what you want in life. It is sage advice she receives from a woman that she admires that has made it in the finance world. I have to agree with the advice, be confident no matter what you attempt and you will be taken seriously.

While the concept isn’t anything new, the writing style, humor, and supporting characters make this a book worth reading. There is even a romance brewing between Delia and Eric if they can both be open with each other….and assuming that Delia isn’t forever stuck in a male body.

We give this book 4 paws up.

An Idyllic Chocolate Shop. An island with endangered species. And a murder.

Felicity Koerber’s bean to bar chocolate shop on Galveston’s historic Strand is bringing in plenty of customers – in part due to the notoriety of the recent murder of one of her assistants, which she managed to solve. Things seem to be taking a turn for the better. Her new assistant, Mateo, even gets along with Carmen, the shop’s barista turned pastry chef. Felicity thinks she’s learning to cope with change – right up until one of her friends gets engaged. Everyone’s expecting her to ask Logan, her former bodyguard, to be her plus one. But even the thought of asking out someone else still makes her feel disloyal to her late husband’s memory — so maybe she hasn’t moved on from her husband’s death as much as she thought.

Felicity isn’t planning to contact Logan any time soon. Only, Felicity finds ANOTHER body right outside her shop – making it two murders at Greetings and Felicitations in as many months. That night, Mateo disappears, leaving Felicity to take care of his pet octopus. The police believe that Mateo committed the murder, but Felicity is convinced that, despite the mounting evidence, something more is going on, and Mateo may actually be in trouble.

When Logan assumes that he’s going to help Felicity investigate, she realizes she’s going to have to spend time with him – whether she’s ready to really talk to him or not. Can Felicity find out what happened to Mateo, unmask a killer, and throw an engagement party all at the same time?

Calling all chocolate lovers! This cozy series will keep you entertained and salivating over truffles, chocolate bars, and many other treats that are whipped up in the Greetings and Felicitations shop in Galveston. Too bad it isn’t a real shop that I could go visit in the future!

This is the second book in this series and it does help to read the first book to get a feel for all of the characters and their back story. Felicity is running a shop that was supposed to be with her husband before he died unexpectedly. She still has many fond memories of her husband and their plans, but she moves forward without him but not without some sad moments. Logan is the potential new guy in her life that we met in the first book. They both have reservations and there are some good conversations between them and what they might be able to have going forward. Of course, there are some misunderstandings and dates with others before they get to that point. Felicity is set up with her ex-boyfriend’s girlfriend’s brother, Wallace. Wallace is a bit of an odd duck and really doesn’t knock Felicity’s socks off. It is an awkward situation for sure considering all involved parties.

I really enjoyed the variety of characters and their quirkiness. The author does a great job of bringing in multiple cultures, beliefs, interests, and personality types. It is hard to know which character to like or dislike and are they involved in the murder of Fabian found outside the front door of Felicity’s shop? It takes a fair amount of digging by Felicity and Logan to get to the bottom of the murder. I had to crack up at one of the characters that Felicity called “Fake Leslie.” This woman knew what she was doing and what she wanted to discover and wasn’t afraid to use anyone else to get the information she needed.

There is a surprising animal that could have stolen the book, Clive the octopus that is Mateo’s pet. I learned a bit about this breed and how you could have an octopus as a pet. Not that I want one, but fascinating information. The author also sheds life on sea turtles and how some are on the road to becoming extinct which is a shame.

The mystery is not an easy one to solve but I have to say that I did suspect the right character, I just didn’t know why or at least not all of the potential details. I don’t want to spoil anything so it is hard to share too many details about why I suspected this character. The character’s behavior near the end, when discovered, was a bit strange, but made sense all things considered.

There is so much to like about this series and I look forward to future installments and learning more about hand-crafted chocolate. We give this book 5 paws up.

Review

The message in this book is to stay true to yourself. At least that is what I took away from this story.

The book follows Jess and her quest for a necklace that her dying grandmother has asked her to find. It was made by her grandmother and they believe it is the necklace of true love, that whoever wears it will find their soulmate. Jess is lucky and finds it at an auction but loses out to another bidder. The story takes an interesting twist and Jess does her best to convince the winner to sell it to her without much luck. However, as she delves deeper into the history of the necklace, it sends her on another journey to uncover her family’s past and she learns much about her ancestors and herself in the process.

This was a fun book to read and watching Jess evolve from an injured woman to one that embraces life once again. It takes about 1/3 of the book to find out why she had to walk with a cane and once you do, there is another look into Jess’ life and who she might really be and not who is portrayed initially. Is her relationship with Tim really the one she is meant to be in or is there someone better out there waiting for her? You’ll have to read the book to find out.

Overall, we give it 4 paws up.

Siblings Laura, Jeremy, and Ashley pursue fun and adventure. All form strong friendships with the Prices, a mysterious mirror-image family that lives next door.

Billionaire Robert Devereaux could not care less. Reeling from the theft of his million-dollar devices, he sends a hit man to the past to retrieve his property and rid the world of his former business partner and his troublesome clan.

Randy Taylor, who programs the machines, is determined to stop him. He tries to undermine his boss and save the Lanes, even as he tries to help his mother beat a deadly illness. He pines for the day he can join his fugitive friends and rekindle a promising relationship with Laura Lane.

Filled with romance, humor, and heartbreak, SEA SPRAY follows a modern family on the adventure of a lifetime as they navigate their way through the exciting and often dangerous world of Lindbergh, Gershwin, and Fitzgerald.

Review

If you enjoy time travel novels, this is a series you will want to pick up. The books follow the Lane family who jumps back in time to escape a crazy business owner that has other ideas for these time boxes that may not be altruistic. The Lane family has become fugitives to this man and has narrowly escaped an assassin that has jumped back in time. Luckily they have inside help!

This book focuses on their jump to the roaring ’20s. This is a time that they feel comfortable until they are discovered. But their adventures along the way make for some great memories. Who wouldn’t be interested in going into the past with the knowledge we have today? While I wouldn’t personally want to change my past, there are a few things that I wouldn’t mind doing a little differently. But to meet some famous people from the past, visit a speakeasy, and so much more.

Each of the characters endures some trials and tribulations in this book. From forming new friendships to finding new love.

I always find myself engrossed in this series and can’t wait for the next book that finds them in Hawaii in 1941 right before the bombing of Pearl Harbor.

We give this book 5 paws up and highly recommend this time travel series.

In this third novel in the Jackson’s Pond, Texas series, fifty-five-year-old Melanie Jackson Banks encounters racism, intolerance, and violence both in her family’s distant past and in current day Jackson’s Pond. She leads family and community efforts to create reconciliation for past wrongs and also to demonstrate strength and defiance in the face of vandalism, cross-burning, domestic violence, threats to Jackson Ranch’s operation, and kidnapping. In the midst of this stormy period, she finds allies in her mother’s long-time companion, Robert Stanley; her mother, Willa Jackson; her daughter Claire Havlicek; and many others.

“Making It Home could not be a more timely book… We live in an imperfect world, but it is still possible to think, imagine and make things better. The cast of characters in this strong family affirms this through their hope, decency, and tenacity!”  Eleanor Morse, author of Margreete’s Harbor

“Jones’ talent for creating indelible characters endures, as does her way with a compelling plot. … This is a timely page-turner.”  Robin Lippincott, author of Blue Territory: A Meditation on the Life and Art of Joan Mitchell

Teddy Jones is the author of three published novels, HalfwideJackson’s Pond, Texas, and Well Tended, as well as a collection of short stories, Nowhere Near. Her short fiction received the Gold Medal First Prize in the Faulkner-Wisdom competition in 2015. Jackson’s Pond, Texas was a finalist for the 2014 Willa Award in contemporary fiction from Women Writing the West. Her as yet unpublished novel, Making It Home, was a finalist in the Faulkner-Wisdom competition in 2017 and A Good Family was named finalist in that contest in 2018.

Although her fiction tends to be set in West Texas, her characters’ lives embody issues not bounded by geography of any particular region. Families and loners; communities in flux; people struggling, others successful; some folks satisfied in solitude and others yearning for connection populate her work. And they all have in common that they are more human than otherwise.

Jones grew up in a small Texas town, Iowa Park. Earlier she worked as a nurse, a nurse educator, a nursing college administrator, and as a nurse practitioner in Texas, Colorado, and New Mexico. For the past twenty years, she and her husband have lived in the rural West Texas Panhandle where he farms and she writes.

Synopsis

How do you win a game that’s trying to kill you?

A twenty-nine year-old clerk at a games store in the Appalachian hamlet of Jett Creek, Tennessee, Callie Myles lives for the weekly RPG sessions run by her beloved brother and gamesmaster, LB. Under his watchful eye, she and her friends wage war, harness magic, and battle evil. When the dice are rolling, they are heroes, and all of Callie’s anxieties slip away. The fun stops the night LB burns to death in a bizarre fire.

Asked by her friends to keep the weekly game alive, Callie does her best to set her grief aside. She puts on the monocle LB wore during sessions and finds herself sucked into a life-sized recreation of her brother’s game. Inhabiting the body of her beloved character, the legendary Arabeth, she thinks she has found the ultimate escape. Her paradise is spoiled when she discovers that something inside the game killed LB—and one of her fellow players was in on it.

To save herself, to avenge her brother, Callie Myles must pull on her armor and beat LB’s game from the inside out. If she gets killed along the way, well, at least she’s having a great time.

A fast-paced hybrid of mystery and adventure, CRITICAL HIT captures the breakneck joy of tabletop gaming, where life and death depend on the whims of a plastic die.

Review

I always enjoy a book that teaches me something new or opens me up to a world that I might have heard of but know very little about. In this case, it is the world of RPG – Role Playing Games. You might be familiar with the term Dungeons and Dragons. My only experience with this game is on an episode of The IT Crowd. It is a short clip but gives you some basics.

Callie is a young woman that is very involved with this world thanks to her brother. He has drawn her into this game since she was young and it is only fitting that she works at a game store where they use the back room to hold their game sessions. Her brother, LB, is the game master and runs the game for this diverse group of characters. The story starts out as they are playing a game and things aren’t going well and then all of a sudden, Callie pulls out some tricks with her character, and perhaps not all is lost. It is just a game after all….or is it? After the session that evening, LB ends up dead from an explosion and Callie goes down a rabbit hole to figure out what happened to him. What she doesn’t expect is to be pulled in and tries to solve LB’s murder. This is where the story takes a crazy twist and everything you might have believed is now flipped upside down.

The author really knows how to engage the reader. I was invested from the first page trying to figure out who killed LB, and then when Callie goes deep into the RPG world. I don’t want to give anything away but I found it very informative and fascinating how the RGP world might look or be played. There is a cast of supporting characters that help to mold Callie and her adventures. When the killer is revealed at the end it was a surprise but at the same time, it wasn’t. There aren’t any obvious clues that pointed to this character, there was just something in the back of mind that wondered if this character was more involved than they portrayed.

The book is filled with action, adventure, mystery, and humor. It is a well written novel and one that anyone could enjoy whether they are familiar with this world or not.

We give this book 4 paws up.
