Synopsis

When Duty, Honor, and Love Collide

Julian Blunt, a former sea captain and a despised Catholic, is stunned when Queen Elizabeth proposes that he help carry a betrothal locket to Tsar Ivan the Terrible in Moscow. It means an alliance between England and Russia is brewing, and the queen warns that should the locket fall into the hands of the Pope or his minions, it could mean war.

Julian joins the queen’s messenger, the lofty and spirited Jessandra Calcross, in a perilous voyage across the Baltic Sea and into the very heart of Russia. When a papal assassin determined to prevent the royal marriage strikes, Jess turns to Julian as the only man she can trust. Although at odds over religion and station, a slender emotional bond grows. Stalked by the relentless murderer, Julian is soon torn between abandoning his mission so he can better safeguard Jess, and fulfilling his vow to the queen. If he fails the queen he’ll never captain a ship again. But if he and Jess continue on to Moscow, they face a darker peril in the mercurial and sinister Tsar Ivan–a peril that will drive courage and dawning love to the breaking point.

Excerpt

In this excerpt, Jess Calcross is aboard a ship somewhere in the Baltic Sea on her way to deliver a betrothal locket to Tsar Ivan the Terrible in Moscow.

***

A noise woke Jess, panting, from a scabrous netherworld where nightmares scratched bony fingers inside her skull. Shadowy images of walking a London alleyway; of knives spinning out of the night slicing her open until the pale-hued ropes of her innards spilled out; of the knife thrower, ribs protruding whitely through decaying flesh and red hair coiling snake-like, laughing as she hurled another blade. She? Was that wraith Katie seeking vengeance against her for wanting Julian to be close?

Jess jolted upright, the dregs of her black dream loitering in her belly like cheese-gone-bad. The disturbing image of knife-throwing Katie nearly made her puke. She poured a measure of water from an earthenware bottle into a rinsing bowl and dashed the liquid across her face. It didn’t help.

The thumping of feet running across the deck drew her more awake. Voices, muffled at first, became louder. A knock on her door made her flinch. She didn’t even have time to say ‘come in’ when the door banged open and Julian entered. The look on his face told her something was wrong.

“Have the Swedes found us?” she asked, holding the blanket to cover her bosom,

“Not the Swedes, but the Reaper himself,” he replied.

“The Grim Reaper?”

“Aye, the one and only. You’d best get dressed and come to Captain Blackman’s quarters.”

She closed the door after he left and flattened herself against it. God! Now what? If not the Swedes had the Spanish found them? Had Bill Pollard gone berserk? Heart racing, she hurriedly dressed, throwing on a shirt and not even bothering to bind her breasts. She eased into the companionway.

Blackman’s cabin door was closed. Red Michael stood outside, his arms crossed. Furrows troubled his brow and he did not meet her gaze. She shivered.

Michael opened the door. Huddled in a corner, Stryker, the drooling steward, sobbed and hid his face in his hands. Julian stood next to Abel Blackman who laid on his bed, unmoving, his arms at his sides, a blanket pulled to his chin. Blackman’s face looked composed, yet his chest did not rise and fall. Julian shook him. There was no response. He pulled the blanket down and searched above the collar of the nightshirt for a pulse. “Not a beat,” he whispered.

“Let me try,” Jess said. She leaned over him, placing her cheek above his nose and mouth. No breath warmed her flesh. She felt his hands. They were cold to the touch. With a little gasp, she stepped back. Acerbic, bellicose, obstinate Abel Blackman was quite dead.

“Stop bleating, man,” Red Michael snapped at the sniveling Stryker. The steward moaned.

Dark suspicions twisted in Jess’s mind. “When did you find him?”

“The captain missed the dawn bell; that’s when I take over the helm,” Michael replied. “Then Stryker told me that there was something wrong with the captain. This is how I found him.”

Stryker wiped his nose on his sleeve. “Died in his sleep, he did. He … he was fine at supper.”

Together, Jess and Julian bent over the corpse. There was something macabre about the peaceful look to Blackman’s features. Julian pinched the captain’s nose with one hand and opened the stiffened jaws with the other. Jess hesitated and then sniffed, searching for the tart odor of belladonna. There was none.

Michael leaned closer to the corpse. “Did you smell poison? We all heard what had happened to Lady Harcourt.”

“Does any of the wine remain from his last meal?” Jess asked without answering.

Stryker let out a groan. Michael spun toward him. “Damn you, quit your blubbering. Move your bloated arse and bring me any wine left from the captain’s mess.”

Snuffling, Stryker shuffled away. He reappeared a minute later, a corked jug cradled in his hands. Jess took the jug and shook it. It sounded about half-full. After removing the cork she sniffed deeply, but detected none of the lingering taint as she remembered from Rosalind Harcourt’s wine.

“I don’t think it’s the wine,” she said, scratching her head in doubt.

“Now what do we do?” Michael asked.

Julian placed a hand on his shoulder. “Wake the first mate. He’s next to command this ship.”

The Highlander winced. “Crofutt will be hard to wake. He was up during the night, but I don’t know the reason. Besides, he’s new to this ship and I doubt the crew will readily follow him, especially with the mess we’re sailing into. You should take over. You have more experience.”

“I’m a Catholic and cannot command,” Julian said, fixing him with a sardonic smile.

Guest Review by Bookgirl Katy

Absolutely riveting and beautifully written historical novel from Ken Czech about a man’s drive to be free and a thrilling journey across the ocean to a foreign land.

Julian Blunt is a former sea captain who lost his wife unexpectedly while he was at sea. The grief is overpowering for Julian and it is compounded by the fact that he recently converted to Catholicism and is now potentially going to be arrested by the guards of the notably Protestant Queen Elizabeth. But, out of the blue, he is ambushed by the queen’s men and taken to meet her, where she offers him a deal. If Julian agrees to ferry a special betrothal locket to the Tsar of Russia, she will not only agree to ignore his religion but allow him to return to his life of captaining ships.

The journey is fraught with peril, Julian must not only face dangerous seas but individuals who are determined to stop him from delivering the locket, thus preventing the royal alliance between England and Russia.

Right from the start, this novel pulled me in. The atmosphere of the sixteenth century setting was perfectly described and well executed. Julian’s grief for his wife, his singular desire to be at sea again, and his fear of being imprisoned or killed were ever present and heart wrenching. The historical detail shone through even in the more subtle scenes. It’s obvious from reading this book that Ken Czech is very knowledgeable about history and his use of that knowledge was evident without being overbearing.

This is both an intricate and complex story that also contains a lot of understated themes. This is a definite must read for anyone that enjoys historical novels or adventure stories. This book will not only keep you on the edge of your seat but it will teach you things along the way.

Focused on a career in medicine and not on romance, Willa Duvall is thrown slightly off course during the summer of 1859 when she discovers a never-opened love letter in a crack of her old writing desk. Compelled to find the passionate soul who penned it and the person who never received it, she takes a job as a nurse at the seaside estate of Crestwicke Manor.

Everyone at Crestwicke has feelings—mostly negative ones—about the man who wrote the letter, but he seems to have disappeared. With plenty of enticing clues but few answers, Willa’s search becomes even more complicated when she misplaces the letter and it passes from person to person in the house, each finding a thrilling or disheartening message in its words.

Laced with mysteries large and small, this romantic Victorian-era tale of love lost, love deferred, and love found is sure to delight.

I’m going to be straight up with you that my review will probably not do this book justice because I am so overwhelmed at all of the intricacies of the story and the family. I was blown away by the twists that were revealed, the history of the characters, and the multitude of quotes that spoke to my heart. So don’t go into this book expecting a sweet romantic story, it is so much more than that as I quickly discovered.

Willa Duvall is a woman after my own heart. She wants to be more than just someone’s wife. She has aspirations to help people with her medical skills and knowledge as a nurse and from working with her father in his clinic. I loved that she was pushing for cleanliness and so much more when that was not the practice of doctors or hospitals. I hated that she was put into a position that she had to barter for her future with her father to pursue becoming a doctor when he just wanted her to be married. As part of the barter, she ends up as a nurse to Golda Gresham, mostly in part due to a letter that she finds in her desk. She doesn’t know who wrote it or who it was meant to receive it, as it was neither addressed nor signed. Golda is quite the character and she does not take any guff from anyone including her children, much less Willa. The interaction between these two started off shaky but in the end, they had a firm friendship and mutual understanding.

Let’s talk about this letter that Willa found. It is one heck of a love letter and I can see why Willa wants to find who wrote it and return it to the proper owner. What she doesn’t expect is for this letter to make its way around the various characters who all think the letter was written for them. The story of this letter is pretty amazing too and just when you think you understand the who and why of the situation, a new piece of information is released changing your whole perspective on the situation.

I enjoyed all of the characters for one reason or another, but I think my favorite is Aunt Maisie or “crazy Maisie”. This woman had firm beliefs and thoughts and I chuckled at her book of words. Words she wanted to use someday so she kept track of them so she was prepared. With the other characters, you had the gamut of personalities from loving, to controlling, insecure to confident. All of these personalities round out the story nicely with just enough tension to make the story engaging.

I can’t forget to mention the romance portion of the story. For Willa, she doesn’t feel like she needs a man to make her life whole but there is one man that seems to fill the bill, Gabe Gresham. They have been friends since childhood and there is something that pulls them together. But don’t think that their path is easy because it is not and that is one of those twists I mentioned. There are several other love stories occurring, but you will have to read the book to discover those for yourself.

Here are some of my favorite quotes (and I did trim the number back – so many more I could have shared!)

“Every day, every moment, I choose you.”

“It was as if God had wrapped his directions up in my friend’s voice so I’d be sure to hear them.”

“You needn’t be afraid of your words, Miss Duvall. Only careful. They’re as easy to gather as rocks, and just as easy to throw about, but don’t underestimate them.”

“Don’t waste a moment when you find the one you love.”

“That letter had been shaking up the household ever since it had been unleashed here, and now it seemed to have somehow landed with her.”

“These words have a life beyond the page. They’ve taken flight in this house, moving where they will, seeping into the cracks of hearts. It’s woken something up in them, opened them to the possibility that love exists and they are worthy recipients. And that is vital.”

“Allow yourself to be caught by a man, Miss Duvall. The right one is worth the risk.”

“…everyone had a story, some with cracks deeper than anyone could imagine.”

“Matched souls always find their way back to one another, for they seek refuge in the same place.”

Overall, I highly recommend this book. The author takes us on a journey that will not be forgotten and many wise words are spoken that we could take to heart even today.

We give this book 5 paws up.

Synopsis

Political intrigue meets romantic suspense in this high-stakes, split-narrative thriller that follows entrepreneur Ben Johnson as he sets out to find the man responsible for the attempted murder of his lifelong love, Acadia LaFleur.

“The SCOTUS Affair” weaves in a compelling, emotional love story between star-crossed lovers. After a secret affair spanning decades almost ends the tragic death of Acadia, Ben stops at nothing to find the man responsible for sending her down a flight of stairs and into a life-threatening coma. The racial and financial differences and familial obligations that keep them apart complicate Ben’s attempts to protect her and, ultimately, come to a head as Ben discovers her own family is tied up in the incident as they leverage their political power for personal gain.

With the help of his PI friend, Dimase Augustin, Ben risks his own life to ensure justice is served to his life-long love, and his dedication and persistence demonstrate that love is both the greatest motivator and most powerful force in the face of evil.

Excerpt

Dimase thought about the house, which was not somewhere one went on a casual stroll. There were no vagrants in the area, so if the attacker hadn’t been an arbitrary person passing through and there was no obvious motive, that left only one alternative: a contract hit.

Then Dimase saw a third possibility. If it hadn’t been a break-in by a homeless vagabond or a politically motivated hit job, could it have been for love? That idea brought him back to Alphonse. Was it possible Alphonse had known about Acadia and Ben Johnson for all those years? Or maybe he only recently had found out. Could he have hired someone to do the job out of pride, jealousy, or revenge? When he looked at it in that light, Alphonse became as strong a suspect as anyone.

Dimase had been sitting at the desk in his hotel room, manipulating an unlit cigarette between his fingers as he ran different scenarios through his mind and sketched out notes on a small pad. First things first, he decided. It was time to start narrowing down the possibilities. He picked up his phone and made arrangements to meet with the sheriff.

An hour later, he was sitting across from Sheriff Roy, reviewing his thought process from earlier in the day.

“So you actually think it might be a homeless person?” the sheriff asked. “We don’t get much of that around here. It’s not like a big city.”

“Actually, Sheriff, I really don’t think that’s it. I just want to rule it out. Did your boys pick up anyone like that in the days around the attack? Are there any hippies living in the woods or any local drunks who get lost from time to time?”

“No, I don’t think so,” the sheriff replied. “I mean, we have a few habitual drunks, like anyplace else, but I’ve never known any of them to wander out of town in that direction. I’ll double-check the arrest records. I don’t think we picked up anyone like what you’re describing.”

“Okay, I had to ask. If you see anything that should point us in that direction, will you let me know?”

“Of course,” the sheriff replied. “So you think it was a hit?” His eyes were open wide.

“I don’t know,” Dimase said, “but right now, it fits better than any other explanation. Wouldn’t you agree?”

“I suppose so,” the sheriff said, “but who would order such a thing? And why?”

Dimase decided to continue to play his cards close to the vest. He still hadn’t mentioned anything to the sheriff about the partial nail he’d recovered. He also didn’t want to say anything about Alphonse being on his list of possibilities for arranging a hit on Acadia. Sharing that information with the sheriff would probably have been a fast track to getting thrown off the case if the sheriff leaked word back to Alphonse or any of the LaFleurs. “I don’t know, but that’s what we have to find out,” Dimase said, standing and shaking the sheriff’s hand.

Just then, one of the sheriff’s deputies stuck his head in the door. “Sheriff, I’ve got the sheriff from Beauregard Parish on the line. You two are both going to want to hear about this.” Dimase and Sheriff Roy looked at each other, and Dimase sat back down.

“Put him through,” the sheriff said.

“Who are they?” Dimase asked.

“Two parishes over, about sixty miles from here,” Sheriff Roy replied. He picked up the phone on his desk. “Roy here. Yes. Yes, I see. No shit. Jesus H. Christ, you have to be shitting me. You think there’s a connection? All right, send me what you’ve got, and I’ll send you our file. Yeah, check it out, and let’s talk. Okay, right. Thanks.”

Dimase looked at Sheriff Roy expectantly. “What’s going on?”

“You’re not going to believe it,” Roy replied. “We’ve got a murder that might be connected to Miss Acadia.”

Now it was Dimase’s turn to look wide-eyed. “How so?” he asked.

“Home invasion. Single woman home alone. Guess what he killed her with? A baseball bat is what it looks like. Beat her to death.”

“Oh shit!” Dimase exclaimed. “That’s nothing,” Roy said. “Guess what her name was?”

“No clue,” Dimase said.

“Acadia LaFleur.”

From the moment Hollis Darby meets Ana Newport, he’s smitten. Even though he’s from a wealthy, established family and she isn’t, he wishes he could have a life with her by his side. But Hollis has a secret: the deep coffers that have kept his family afloat for generations are bare, so he supports himself by writing penny dreadfuls under a pseudonym. If not for the income from his novels, he would be broke.

Ana Newport also has a secret. Though she once had a place in society thanks to her father’s successful business, bankruptcy and scandal reduced his fortune to nothing more than a crumbling townhouse. So Ana teaches music during the day, and at night she assumes the identity of the “Phantom Fox.” She breaks into the homes of the wealthy to reclaim trinkets and treasures she feels were unjustly stolen from her family when they were struggling.

When Hollis’s brother needs to hire a music tutor for his daughter, Hollis recommends Ana, giving him a chance to spend time with her. Ana needs the income and is eager for the opportunity to get to know the enigmatic gentleman. What neither of them expects is how difficult it will be to keep their respective secrets from each other.

When a spree of robberies rocks the city, Ana and Hollis join forces to solve the crimes, discovering that working together deepens the affection between them. After all, who better to save the day than a gentleman and a thief?

“The real joy in Eden’s follow-up to The Lady and the Highwayman (2019) is the furthering of the overarching crime story and the work of the Dread Penny Society as Hollis and Ana pursue a chaste romance. Eden excels at exploring the realities of Victorian life and class differences. Once again, chapters of penny dreadfuls written by the characters are interspersed throughout, with Hollis’ story about a school for ghosts offering particular delight. Review

I have enjoyed this new series by Sarah Eden. I love the historical aspect but what I think I really like are the stories within the story – the penny dreadfuls. They are witty and I can see where these would take a person’s mind off the bad things going on around them. Like they say, get lost in a book!

This is also supposed to be a proper romance. To me, that just means a very clean romance story set in the past when people were more proper and had manners. This book definitely fills that bill but the romance is very light. We know that Hollis and Ana are attracted to each other and have their flirtations and interactions, but I think the book was more focused on other things such as the DPS – Dreadful Penny Society – and their works trying to get urchins and orphans off of the street and away from those that abuse them. There is also the mystery of who is the Phantom Fox. Granted the answer is discovered early on, but I enjoyed watching how that story unfolded as well.

I found all of the characters engaging and they all added something to the story whether it was good or bad. I think that if you like clean, historical novels that you will like this series.

We give this 4 paws ups.

Prologue from STRONG FROM THE HEART

BY JON LAND

Southwest Texas

“There is a house down in New Orleans, they call the rising sun.”

As the famed song played in the single bud still wedged inside an ear, Tom Santiago found himself baking beneath a sun that had risen hours ago, long before his postal rounds brought him to the town of Camino Pass. The mailbag was still slung over his shoulder, a trail of circulars, bills, and typical junk mail left in his three-mile wake across the desert. His other ear bud fluttered by his side, Santiago noticing that no more than he noticed the wind having blown his cap off a mile back, exposing his nearly baldpate to the blistering sun.

His scalp was already scorched red, but neither the pain nor the burn registered with him one bit. He walked purposefully, even though no part of his assigned route awaited him and only bobcats, mule deer and coyote were anywhere about to claim the mail he was toting.

“And it’s been the ruin of many a poor boy and, God, I know I’m one . . .”

Santiago listened to classic rock through the duration of his route, able to time his delivery schedule to how many songs he’d listened to. He could cover an entire neighborhood in the length of one of Bob Dylan’s ballads and a whole street in the time it took to listen to almost any pair of Beatles songs that ranked among his favorites.

Today, though, he didn’t register the song playing in one of his ears or anything else. He walked in an absurdly straight line, as if the desert flora he passed lined his normal route, similarly not noticing the Homeland Security drone overhead. Homeland maintained a fleet of them in the area of the Texas-Mexico border to watch for immigrants making their way north after illegally crossing the border. But the dispatcher who radioed the nearest patrol vehicle currently coming up on Tom Santiago from behind never before had to deal with a wayward mailman instead.

The Humvee with the Homeland Security logo stenciled on both sides came around Santiago and banked to the side to cut him off, only to have him skirt the vehicle and continue on as if it were a natural obstacle. So officers Jim Ochoa and Darnell Reavis leaped down from their air-conditioned cab and caught up with the dazed, barely blinking mailman after a brief chase.

“Hey, buddy, what’s wrong?” Ochoa said, snapping his fingers in front of Santiago’s face and positioned so he could not resume his march through the desert. “You lost or something?”

When this produced no response, Darnell Reavis plucked some mail from the top of Santiago’s bag.

“Isn’t that a crime or something?” Ochoa asked him.

“I don’t think this drunk sack of shit is in shape to care.”

“You think he’s drunk?”

Now it was Reavis who snapped his fingers before the mailman. “Or stoned. What else?”

Ochoa regarded some of the mail Reavis had handed him. “Looks like he left a whole bunch of mail to Camino Pass undelivered.”

“Never heard of it.”

“Small town, no more than three hundred residents,” Ochoa recalled.

“Maybe one of them can tell us what happened to this guy. Hey, what’s that song he’s listening to?” Reavis wondered, easing the stray bud into his ear to find out.

“Well, I got one foot on the platform, the other foot on the train, I’m going back to New Orleans to wear that ball and chain.”

***

Both Ochoa and Reavis felt something strange as the town of Camino Pass came into view. Though neither would admit it, both were of a mind not to continue and call in the Highway Patrol instead, especially when Tom Santiago’s eyes bulged at sight of the town and he began thrashing against the bonds of his shoulder harness.

“No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, NO!”

Santiago finally stopped with his eyes frozen open on Camino Pass growing in shape before them, the perspiration that had soaked through his blue postal uniform now gluing him to the Humvee’s leather-like upholstery.

“What do you want to do?” Reavis asked Ochoa.

“Let’s see what we can see,” his partner replied, even though that wasn’t what he wanted to do at all.

They passed by the homes dotting the town’s outskirts and continued toward its small commercial center populated by stores that had been around since either man had been born, some of them closed.

“Hey,” Reavis said, his attention drawn to the right, “there’s an open door over there. A restaurant, I think.”

“Or a bar,” from Ochoa.

“That would explain things.”

“Want to check it out?”

“I’m thinking one of us should stay with the mailman.”

Ochoa threw open his door. “He’s not going anywhere. Come on.”

***

Tom Santiago’s blank stare followed the men passing through the open door, little more than the length of a breath passing before they stumbled back outside, both nearly falling in their desperate rush back to the vehicle.

“No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no,” the mailman repeated over and over again on an infinite loop, as Ochoa screeched the Humvee around and raced from the town with the accelerator floored the whole way.

Reavis grabbed the mic from its stand. “Central, this is Rover Six! Central, come in!”

“This is Central, Rover Six.”

“Central, we’ve got a potential Level One event in the town of Camino Pass. Send . . .”

“Rover Six, this is Central,” the Homeland Security dispatcher said, when Reavis went quiet after using terminology reserved only for the most serious of catastrophes. “Rover Six, we read you. Please continue.”

Reavis swallowed hard. “Send . . . everyone.”

Synopsis

JACK is a thrilling story of conspiracy and murder, celebrating the grime and glory of Britain’s capital city, and the heights and depths of its society.

Jack the Ripper came and went without warning in the second half of 1888, leaving the mutilated corpses of five women in his wake. Despite the best efforts of Scotland Yard, the baffling and gruesome murders remain unsolved to this day.

Over a century later, the discovery of what might be the Ripper’s diary re-awakens the case.

The forces that drove the Ripper to do his grisly work in 1888 are still very much at work today, and just as dangerous. To what lengths will they go to preserve the secret which can destroy the monarchy?

Could a member of the royal family really have been the true culprit of these heinous crimes? With the mysterious case reprised, a renewed investigation falls to the bored, rich and charming, James Kent. James takes on the challenging case, teaming up with the stunning Alice, who has her own reasons to defend the historic doctor’s involvement. Together, with dangerous consequences ahead, they reinvestigate royal links to the notorious serial killer. But, patriotism can be a deadly trait in the wrong hands. And, lurking in the shadows, working to protect the greater good even with murder, is someone who will do absolutely anything in their power to stop the duo from exposing secrets…

With mounting tension and many twists and turns, the book takes readers on an extraordinary scavenger hunt across London and England. Reincarnating the capital’s most intriguing murderer, there are dark forces at play that cast increasing doubt over who is governing the country.

Excerpt from Chapter 11

James watched the rear lights of the second beautiful car he had ridden in within twenty four hours pull away. Then he pulled his key out and went into his building.

He hung his coat on the hook inside his front door and dropped his key and phone into the bowl on the side table. Then he strolled to the living room, turned on the light – and froze.

A man was sitting in one of his chairs. He could have stepped out of the movie Men in Black. He wore a black suit, a white shirt, and a grey tie. Unlike the Men in Black, he had long, black hair hanging either side of his slender face. And he had a gun pointed at James, with a silencer screwed into the end.

“A wonderful evening, Mr. Kent! Now let’s finally get to know each other.”

His voice was clear and cold, without any excitement, as though it was the most normal thing in the world to wait with a gun, at night, in other people’s apartments.

James’s mind spun. If this man wanted him dead, he would be dead already. He could have been gunned down and never known it. Therefore the man wanted something; therefore the man probably wasn’t actually going to kill him.

Though – and James was no expert here, but still – he was pretty sure a man with a gun could inflict a lot of non-lethal pain. But why?

James had faced down bullies at school who were twice his height and half his intellect. He knew how to keep his face straight and his voice level.

“May I know what you’re looking for in my apartment? And how did you actually get in? Who are you?”

“My name doesn’t matter, and I will ask you a few questions. If I don’t like the answers…” He waggled the gun. “I have ways of showing it. Do we understand each other?”

“I think we do,” James said carefully.

“Now. Why are you looking into Jack the Ripper?”

The question was so unexpected that James’s resolve to take the man seriously couldn’t stand up to his sense of absurdity.

“Well, I like to solve puzzles! I can do the Times crossword in fifteen minutes!”

The gun was aimed a little more firmly at him, but the man waved towards a side table. With his mind taken up by the intruder, James hadn’t noticed Anderson’s file spread out there. He had left the papers neatly stacked. His visitor had gone through them thoroughly.

“These records originally belonged to Sir Robert Anderson. Who gave them to you?”

George Anderson, what the hell have you got me into? James thought. But he wasn’t going to give his employer’s name. The one thing worse than this nutter with a gun being here was the thought of him threatening a helpless old man with it. Minus the gun, James and this guy would be equally matched, he reckoned – if he could just work out how to get past it.

“No one,” James said promptly. “I’m acting on my own behalf.”

The man stood up and aimed the gun directly at James, sighting down a straight arm and over the barrel. The movement looked professional – he had been trained to do this. James could see a gold signet ring on his right hand. He tried to memorize the design so that he could Google it later – if he got out of this in one piece.

“You don’t get hurt if you tell me what I want to know,” the man promised, and James realized he was not supposed to be leaving this room alive, one way or another.

He clicked his tongue, as though he was admitting defeat.

“The folder arrived this morning. I’ve no idea who sent it. You know I’m a journalist? We get sent all kinds of crap anonymously.” He went on, warming to his theme. “I guess you’ve at least looked me up already? I write for Time Out. Why would I want a pile of crap about Jack the Ripper?”

The man’s eyes narrowed.

“That is at least plausible. Next question. Who was the blonde woman at Old Scotland Yard?”

Now James was frightened. So he knew of Alice’s existence. If he learnt her name then she too would be in danger.

“Her? She was a tourist. I showed her the way there…”

The man fired the gun. It gave a small cough and a small crater appeared in the floor just in front of James’s left foot. Every muscle of James’s body froze.

“Every lie from now on, Mr. Kent, and I aim one inch higher than the shot before. I know you were together in the archives looking for the year 1888. So, who is she?”

“Okay.” James’s heart pounded, but he made himself sound cool and collected, and nowhere near as terrified as he felt. “I’ll tell you two things that are true.” He paused, then held up one finger. “One, I’m not going to tell you.” He held up another finger, with his other hand, bringing his hands within inches of each other in front of him. “And two, if you kill me, you’ll never know who she is.”

The man smiled faintly.

“I really don’t think you appreciate how much pain can overcome the strongest man’s resolve, Mr. Kent, but you clearly need to learn, so–…”

“Okay!” James said quickly. He was still holding his hands up. Careful not to make any sudden movements to provoke a shot before he was ready for it, he stood with palms out, the classic gesture of appeasement.

“Okay,” he said again. “You’ve got me. Where should I start?”

The man relaxed, just a fraction.

“Start at–…”

James clapped his hands together, and the apartment went dark.

Title: THE ANCESTOR

Author: Lee Matthew Goldberg

Publisher: All Due Respect

Genre: Thriller / Mystery

Synopsis

A man wakes up in present-day Alaskan wilderness with no idea who he is, nothing on him save an empty journal with the date 1898 and a mirror. He sees another man hunting nearby, astounded that they look exactly alike. After following this other man home, he witnesses a wife and child that brings forth a rush of memories of his own wife and child, except he’s certain they do not exist in modern times—but from his life in the late 1800s. After recalling his name is Wyatt, he worms his way into his doppelganger Travis Barlow’s life. Memories become unearthed the more time he spends, making him believe that he’d been frozen after coming to Alaska during the Gold Rush and that Travis is his great-great grandson. Wyatt is certain gold still exists in the area and finding it with Travis will ingratiate himself to the family, especially with Travis’s wife Callie, once Wyatt falls in love. This turns into a dangerous obsession affecting the Barlows and everyone in their small town, since Wyatt can’t be tamed until he also discovers the meaning of why he was able to be preserved on ice for over a century.

A meditation on love lost and unfulfilled dreams, The Ancestor is a thrilling page-turner in present day Alaska and a historical adventure about the perilous Gold Rush expeditions where prospectors left behind their lives for the promise of hope and a better future. The question remains whether it was all worth the sacrifice….

Praise

“Lee Matthew Goldberg is an animal—there is no other way to say it. His prose is heavyweight ambitious, as visceral as a sweaty-toothed dog at your throat. He evokes Robert Louis Stevenson as much as he does a modern thriller novelist. And I’ll be honest: I expected a crime novel, but I got a spell-binding epic, an epistolary revelation, a tale as rich as a paying gold mine. The Ancestor is more than a novel. It’s an ode to the rich tradition of adventure storytelling…seasoned with ample spice of love and violence and greed.” —Matt Phillips, author of Countdown and Know Me from Smoke

“In The Ancestor, Lee Matthew Goldberg masterfully weaves together a story involving family and violence set against the backdrop of an unforgiving Alaska of both past and present.” —Andrew Davie, author of Pavement and Ouroboros

“From the icy opening battle of man vs. wolf, you feel yourself in the hands of a master storyteller and that feeling never lets up.” —SJ Rozan, bestselling author of Paper Son

“This thrilling novel is rich in descriptions of the vast, snowy, and deadly wilderness of Alaska; it ably captures the type of person who chases gold.” —Foreword Reviews

“A story that blends the familiar and the supernatural in a manner that calls Stephen King’s work to mind. That said, Goldberg’s book possesses a flavor all its own—a distinctive mélange of the sincere and the strange.” —Kirkus Reviews

“Beautifully written, and capturing the unforgiving grit of Gold Rush Alaska, Lee Matthew Goldberg’s The Ancestor is a thrilling page-turner with an ache in its heart. I’m a huge fan.” —Roz Nay, author of Hurry Home and Our Little Secret

“A suspenseful historical thriller.” —Indie Reader

“One of the year’s best thrillers. Blake Crouch fans will love Goldberg’s Alaskan opus.” —BestThrillers

Review

I enjoy a good time travel novel but usually the ones I have read go from the present to the past. This book is the opposite and Wyatt finds himself transported 120+ years into the future. What a surprise that had to be for him. He manages to adapt better than I expected he would, but perhaps that is because they are in a small town in Alaska, and while there is some newer technology, the bulk of the town seems to be working class and sometimes struggling to get by.

The story focuses on Wyatt and Travis, two men that seem to look a lot alike and that could be because Wyatt is Travis’ great great grandfather. Or so we are told. Wyatt struggles with what he has lost including his wife and son and to find his ancestors is probably mind-boggling for him to grasp. But once he does, he wants to know everything he can about his family and what happened to them. He is able to discover some information which I think helps him accept what has happened to him. I found his interactions with Aylen interesting. I think they are both searching for more to hold on to in their lives.

Travis has dreams of his own and wants to be more for himself and his family. I think he wrestles with the memory of his brother and how that impacted his family. But he has a wife that adores him and a son that is a hoot. I love that he calls Caribu, boo. Travis’ father, Stu, has issues as well and I felt like he was obsessed with discovering what happened to his son that died.

While the book really revolves around the men, the women in their lives are strong competent characters. They don’t take any flack and will stand up for their family. I like that about Callie, Cora, and Lorinda. While they may realize that options are limited in their town, they don’t let that hold them back or down.

This story moved along at a pretty steady pace with some peaks of excitement. I liked the journal entries that shared more of Wyatt’s journey to Alaska. It gives us a better insight into the man.

This was an enjoyable book and we give it 4 paws up.

Excerpt

Chapter 1

One eye open, the other frozen shut. He knows what an eye is, but that other “I” remains a mystery. Mind scooped out and left in ice. Words are hunted, slowly return. Blue sky, that’s what he sees. The sun twinkling like a diamond. Tundra, there’s another recalled word. Packed snow on all sides as if the world succumbed to white. The air a powerful whistle. A breeze blows, not a friend but a penance. It passes right through and chills to the core, this enemy wind. Limbs atrophied, no idea when they last moved. Boil of a sun thaws and prickles. Tiny spiders swinging from leg hairs, biting into flesh. He cries out but there is no sound. For it feels like he hasn’t spoken in centuries.

Back of throat tastes of metal. Blood trapped in phlegm. A cough sends a splatter of red against the stark land, a streak in the form of a smile. When was the last time he ate? His stomach growls in agony, a good sign. Organs working, or at least attempting to work. His one eye scans to the left and the right, no sign of anyone, not even an animal. No chance for a savior or sustenance.

He gums his jaw, the first inkling of movement. Aware of his scraggily beard coated in frost. Crystals spiral from his chin, collect in his lap. Now he sees his hands, luckily in gloves except they are a thin brown leather, rather useless. Bones crack as he maneuvers to remove the gloves. Fingers tremble once hit with fresh air and numbness subsides. Massages his legs, gets the blood flowing, an injection of life. The spiders accelerate and then relent, toes wiggle, and he sits up. Around his neck rests a notebook and a fountain pen, the tip crusted in flakes. He feels an object in a front pocket and pulls out a silver compact mirror, the back embroidered with floral patterns, ladylike. This is not my mirror, he decides, but then has a more important realization. Who am I? With trembling hands, he brings the mirror up to his face for a glance.

The reflection of a stranger. All beard save for some features that emerge. A bulbous but authoritative nose, green eye flecked with gold, a mane of dark hair cascading to his shoulders. Handsome in a grizzled way. Shades of a bear in the roundness of his cheeks and a wolf in his stare.

“I am…,” his lips try to say, but there is no answer. Often one can wake from a dream and the dream seems real for a moment, but a sense of self never vanishes. Whoever he was has been long gone, unlikely to return anytime soon. At least while he remains freezing in the wilderness.

I must make it out of here.

It’s relieving that he thinks of himself as an “I”. Whoever he is, he is someone. A mother birthed and fed him from her breast. A father taught him.…taught him what exactly? Survival skills? How to hunt? If he had a father worth his while, he’d know how to do this.

And then, a caterwauling from the depths of his soul, a fawn-in-distress call that plants a trap for curious predators. He knows this sound well, meaning he’s lured prey before. His daddy schooled him like a good man should.

The waiting game. Another call erupts, a coyote’s howl this time. He can recognize the difference. Then it comes to him that he needs to know what to do should an animal appear. He pats down his pockets, no weapon but his fists. And then, the clinking of sharp nails against the ice sheet. A majestic wolf, eyes like the sky, shimmering coat the color of clouds. Its charcoal nose twitches; the blood he hacked up in plain sight. He and the wolf lock into a dueling stare, neither wanting to be the first to flinch. A vision of death with baring teeth, or the start of his new life if victorious. The wolf doesn’t give him a chance to contemplate, lunging with a mouth full of saliva. He catches it in a brutal embrace and becomes knocked off his heels, slamming his back against the hard ground. They skitter down a slick snowcap, snapping at one another like angry lovers. The wolf is relentless, a worthy opponent, a test of wills. He gets the beast in a headlock, trying to crack its neck, but the wolf is too slippery. Breath fumes from other kills circle into his nostrils—this wolf has never lost a battle before. Blood splashes, no clue which of them has been wounded. They spin in the snow like a tornado. He makes a fist, jams it in the wolf’s mouth. Teeth marks scrape against his knuckles as he rams his fist farther down the wolf’s throat. The wolf heaves, chokes, attempting to chew off his hand but its strategy is futile. It has only come across other animals, never a human mind that can think steps ahead.

Now he attempts a headlock again with his left arm, squeezing off circulation. The wolf lets out a whimper that reverberates through his wrist. They lock into a dueling stare again, except this time he does not see the many kills of the wolf through its gaze. He visualizes its sadness, its inevitable end. And then, the sound of a heavy branch snapping, the wolf’s neck broken, his blood-soaked fist removed from the back of its throat. Its dead tongue lolling out of its mouth against the icy bed. He pets its beautiful coat, this formidable foe, now a present wrapped with a bow. Delectable to quench his all-consuming hunger.

He needs the clearest block of ice he can find. Using the wolf’s teeth to carve a fine translucent round piece, he creates a magnifying glass. He rubs the dirt away and keeps rubbing until enough moisture flecks off. There’s a bed of whittled grass at the slope he and wolf ended up in, and he holds the ice over the dry grass, propping it against two logs until a brilliant rainbow prism shoots through and ignites a fire. He rips off all the breakable branches he can locate to stoke the flames. While it continues to spread, he procures a rock to blunt out the wolf’s teeth, then uses them for the painstaking task of skinning the fur. He does it carefully so a semblance of a coat remains, which he dips into a nearby brook to wash away any lingering blood and sinew. The sun has mostly dipped behind the mountains and he wears the wolf’s coat to mask the chill, then roasts its carcass over the roaring fire, breaking off legs and gnawing while the true flesh still cooks.

The meat is a godsend to his empty stomach and also an immediate poison that his body rejects by throwing up. But he sucks on some ice and the queasiness diminishes. By the time it’s fully cooked, darkness reigns and he feels more like a shell than anyone has before. Except with each chew, this lessens and soon he becomes human again. But the loneliness isn’t as easy to fight off. There are souls that feel lonely, he assumes, but at least they have themselves for company. They can rely on memories to help them through cold nights. He searches his mind for a wisp of the past, any nugget, wading through a never-ending sea. The horizon seemingly attainable, but with every stroke just as far away. He’d cry but the tears are frozen in his ducts, and his one eye still sealed shut.

When enough of the wolf has been eaten so his belly distends like a newly pregnant woman, he feeds the fire with more broken limbs and curls up to its warmth, his only confident in this harsh wilderness, possibly his only companion forever—a lifetime of attempting to be caressed by flames and nothing more. He wraps himself tightly in the wolf’s fur, hoping that when he wakes again he’ll know who he is. The nightmare vanished along with the sun rising like a bride’s pretty little hand on his grizzled cheek.

Synopsis

A shocking murder in an affluent Helsinki suburb has ties to the occult in this thrilling US debut from Finnish author Max Seeck.

A bestselling author’s wife has been found dead in a gorgeous black evening gown, sitting at the head of a formally set dinner table. Her most chilling feature—her face is frozen in a ghastly smile.

At first it seems as though a deranged psychopath is reenacting the gruesome murders from The Witch Hunter, the bestseller written by the victim’s husband. But investigator Jessica Niemi soon realizes she’s not looking for a single killer but rather for dozens of believers in a sinister form of witchcraft.
