Guest Post

Ok so how crazy is this?!   1 year ago today, Laura was visiting my blog and she is back today sharing thoughts on another subject.  AND it is my birthday so Happy Birthday to ME!

Dogs and Cats and Mystery!

Guest blog by Laura Childs, New York Times bestselling author of Glitter Bomb, a New Orleans Scrapbooking Mystery.

When I write a mystery – and I’ve written 42 of them so far in my career – my very first chapters literally begin with a bang. I’ve had dead bodies roll out of wine casks, exploding hot air balloons, Jeeps crashing through store windows, gunshots, stabbings, fires in haunted houses, cemetery murders . . . well, you name it, I’ve probably done it.

From there I try to keep my pace moving at breakneck speed. Sometimes there’s a second murder, an injury, car wreck, or someone pleading for help. Often my main character is threatened or her livelihood attacked. This is why I refer to my books as a hybrid between a mystery and a thriller – a thrillzy.

And, yes, I diligently focus on character, plot, timing, and internal architecture. But there’s one more wild card that I always toss in – a dog or a cat.

I firmly believe that caring for a pet gives my characters a more human side. In my Scrapbook Mysteries, Carmela has Boo and Poobah, two dogs. Her BFF Ava has a cat. In my Tea Shop Mysteries, Theodosia has her dog Earl Grey and Drayton has a recently acquired Cavalier King Charles Spaniel named Honeybee. And in my Cackleberry Club Mystery series, Suzanne has Baxter and Scruff, two dogs, as well as a horse, Mocha Gent, and a mule name Grommet.

You see, even the names in this menagerie make one smile. And three of these critters were rescued from the streets. So it just goes to reason that if one of my characters will go out of her way to help a stray animal, of course, she’s going to help a friend who’s been falsely accused of murder.

Sometimes, a dog or cat can even help investigate a crime. (The dogs and cats in my books are very smart). Or they can guard the home front when the killer shows up to seek revenge.

Dogs and cats are a wonderful plot device – and yet they’re wonderful characters just on their own. They can listen to my protagonist when she’s down or troubled, they can go on walks where ideas are worked out, or act as a perfect foil for “accidentally” bumping into a suspect.

Best of all, it’s just plain fun to toss a dog or a cat into the mix. They’re loveable fur babies with antics that tend to make readers chuckle. And if you as a reader enjoy curling up in your favorite chair, with your dog or cat at your feet, so much the better.

If you’re intrigued by the notion of dogs and cats in mysteries, you’re going to enjoy Glitter Bomb, my newest New Orleans Scrapbook Mystery. In fact, here’s a quick synopsis:

Mardi Gras in New Orleans is in full swing when the King Neptune float explodes, sending a plume of glitter into the night sky and killing a hedge fun bigwig. Scrapbook maven Carmela and her BFF Ava have front row seats to the mayhem – and get pulled in when Carmela’s ex, Shamus, becomes a key suspect. Running her own shadow investigation, Carmela tries to clear Shamus while dodging the watchful eye of her fiancée Detective Edgar Babcock. Haunted cemeteries, fashion show, sports car rally, and hungry alligators round out the humor and mischief.

Thanks for reading me!

Love, Laura Childs

About the Authors

laura-childsLaura Childs is the New York Times bestselling author of the Tea Shop Mysteries, Scrapbook Mysteries, and Cackleberry Club Mysteries. In her previous life she was CEO/Creative Director of her own marketing firm and authored several screenplays. She is married to a professor of Chinese art history, loves to travel, rides horses, enjoys fund raising for various non-profits, and has two Chinese Shar-Pei dogs.

Laura specializes in cozy mysteries that have the pace of a thriller (a thrillzy!) Her three series are:

The Tea Shop Mysteries – set in the historic district of Charleston and featuring Theodosia Browning, owner of the Indigo Tea Shop. Theodosia is a savvy entrepreneur, and pet mom to service dog Earl Grey. She’s also an intelligent, focused amateur sleuth who doesn’t rely on coincidences or inept police work to solve crimes. This charming series is highly atmospheric and rife with the history and mystery that is Charleston.

The Scrapbooking Mysteries – a slightly edgier series that take place in New Orleans. The main character, Carmela, owns Memory Mine scrapbooking shop in the French Quarter and is forever getting into trouble with her friend, Ava, who owns the Juju Voodoo shop. New Orleans’ spooky above-ground cemeteries, jazz clubs, bayous, and Mardi Gras madness make their presence known here!

The Cackleberry Club Mysteries – set in Kindred, a fictional town in the Midwest. In a rehabbed Spur station, Suzanne, Toni, and Petra, three semi-desperate, forty-plus women have launched the Cackleberry Club. Eggs are the morning specialty here and this cozy cafe even offers a book nook and yarn shop. Business is good but murder could lead to the cafe’s undoing! This series offers recipes, knitting, cake decorating, and a dash of spirituality.

Synopsis

Behind the Fan by Caroline Walken follows the family of Dorothy Kennedy-Denham as they care for her.  Dottie has lived nearly a century, outliving friends, family and the love of her life Nicky.  She slips into the past often, and the family is at a loss as to how to reach her.  She, however, has found a place that gives her peace and comfort, one where she again celebrates her life and her love.  Her memory lapse allows Nicky the opportunity to connect with her again, holding him in ‘The Void’ where he can only move forward if she joins him.  Dottie would willingly do so, but she has unfinished business to attend first.

After a nearly fatal accident, her family arrives in her home.  The decision made that the safest place for their feeble relative is in an assisted living facility.  However, a discovery in the woman’s memorabilia opens a door no one expected.

The family embarks on a journey that unravels a history they never imagined.  This also gives Dottie an opportunity to share her life’s lessons with those she holds most dear.

This is not just another heartfelt family moment, however; the family may need to embrace a passing entanglement with gangsters and bootleggers, this being only on their grandfather’s side of the family.  They first must recover from the shock that their sweet grandmother was a burlesque dancer and a successful one at that!

In retelling her life story Dottie is able to use her life’s lessons to help the women in her family come to terms with their own battles.  Whether it is love, trust or confidence, Dottie has a treasure trove of examples to use.   Finally, those that she loves find a new path to happiness and she is free to pursue her own.  In her life and in her passing, she touches her great-granddaughter, Maisie the deepest.  A quiet studious girl, she is keen to notice the faint scent of Cigar smoke and questions if Dottie’s ‘moments’ could be more.  Her great-grandmother helps her see the beauty she possesses and gives her confidence to seek her own happiness.   In the end, she will circle back to the same home, electing to begin her family there in the place where she feels loved.

Behind the Fan is more than just a romance; it is a comedy, a story of family and one of hope.  In it, I explore if the state of dementia could be something more, or could it be this is what we simply hope.  The setting of Newport Kentucky based on the city’s rich and interesting history.  I grew up in northern Kentucky and I am not ashamed to say my family may have had a gangster or two in our family tree as well.  I feel the characters are rich and multifaceted and keeping the reader turning to the next page.

The photo shoot…

Behind the Fan by Caroline Walken

The stage lights glare; the runway is polished to a high gleam.  The photographer arranges the lighting to shine at an angle so it won’t interfere with the shot.  Backstage she makes careful preparations.  She concentrates on her make-up and the set of her hair.  All morning, she wears hard curlers until her scalp is sore from them.  She stands before a mirror, brushing her hair to a soft gleam; in the end, she decides the pain is well worth it.  With layer applications, she mops her foundation on heavier than normal, next she strokes on the blush darker to show up better under in the photo.  She borrows false lashes from Lillie; while gluing them in place, she prays they won’t pop loose under the heat of the lights.  Holding her breath, she steadies her hand, carefully she applies black eyeliner to her upper lids; fearing it looks like a black slash against her fair skin.  Straightening she examines her handiwork; pleased that the eyeliner frames her eyes, bringing them to the forefront.  Lastly, she brushes on the pancake powder liberally to ward off the shine.  Her feathered fans are her ‘shtick’ and in the days preceding; she grooms them to perfection.  Behind their shield, her attire will be a skimpy shell pink satin bra, matching panties, and garter belt.  In the poor lighting of the dressing area, Dot carefully rolls the silk seamed hose up her leg, gently snapping the top to her garter.  When her preparations are complete, she stands before the pitted mirror for a critical look.  She doesn’t recognize the woman in the cracked surface.  She does not see the exhausted pseudo-mother working until the wee hours of the morning only to rise again within hours to see Donny off to school.  She is not the girl that prayed in church every Sunday to make next weeks’ rent.  This girl is not the ignorant virgin that laughs at bawdy jokes without knowing why they were funny.

Dottie stands before the mirror looking at the image of a real woman.  She is beautiful; like a goddess, she stares entranced, she doesn’t recognize her reflection.

She is satisfied that she is ready and pulls on her faded flannel robe; she grabs the large fans and heads for the stage.  She explains her routine to the photographer; the thin man nods on occasion between fumbling with his thick glasses and adjusting his camera lens.  She takes this as his approval for her routine.  She glances over at Nicky; the look in his eyes causes her to stop.  No man has ever looked at her like that.  The look in Nicky’s eyes is difficult to resist, hard for her to ignore.  It is clear that she set him back on his heels this time.  He has a thing for her; the man hardly keeps it a secret.  He is an outrageous flirt, and he seldom gives her a moment’s peace.  A considerable challenge now that Donny has taken a shine to him.  Card tricks, Nicky wormed his way in showing the boy card tricks!  Now Donny also campaigns for him!  It won’t do him any good; she has a front row seat to the roller coaster ride a woman took after taking up with one of these boys.  Layoff men are addicted to the action; they raise hell like there is no tomorrow, and run through women like whiskey.  She sees first-hand what the other girls go through.  The last thing she needs is complications from the likes of Nick Denham.

Within the darkness in the back of the runway, she glances at the shadowed form seated at the piano, despite the fact he didn’t smile, she knows that his eyes twinkle.  The butterflies in her stomach flutter; she is uncertain which situation is responsible for this.  Nicky leans forward, and he rolls into a slow, sultry number; the horn player joins in, but it is the piano that takes the lead.  She draws in a deep breath and unties the robe, shrugging her shoulders she drops it; she kicks it beyond view.  Strangely, she feels naked and needs a moment to settle her nerves.  She exhales, and snaps the fans to life; they flare out around her like an angel’s wings as she steps into the halo of light.  The piano meets her, welcoming her to the dance.  Slowly she sways waving the feathered fans around her.  Closing her eyes, she permits the melody to lead her all the while undulating the fans around her nearly nude body.  At last, she finds her rhythm, Dottie opens her eyes to stare not at the photographer, but instead at the camera lens itself.  She intends to provoke the instrument into falling in love with her.  In place of the shuttered lens, she imagines Nicky’s face, envisioning his reaction to her movements.  Secretly she dances for his pleasure, allowing his music to make love to her.  As Nicky runs his fingers up and down the keyboard, she fantasizes how he would run his hands over her body.  Lightening his touch; barely tickling the keys as he teases her, just as she would expect him to do.  In response, she gyrates and lowers her body to the floor, swiveling she rises again like smoke.  Rapidly, twisting and seducing the melody from him.  His fingers now fly across the piano keys increasing the tempo to match.  Dottie spins, arching her back and throwing back her head as the music thrusts its way inside her.  Nick cleverly chases her, never allowing her to escape him as he brings her to the crescendo of the performance.  Hitting the final note, he holds her in there; leaving them both breathless.   She drops the fans to the stage, the clatter echoes in the silent club.  A sheen of sweat glistens on her skin under the glare of the spotlight, her hair in disarray, she pants uncontrollably.

Picking up the fans, she carefully refolds them before retreating to the back of the stage to retrieve her robe.  Quietly the audience begins to converse again, the words muffled by the pounding of her heart.  It is crucial that this had gone well, over her shoulder she calls to the photographer.

“Sir, did you get the photos you needed?”

When she received only silence she turns, the photographer is mopping his face with his handkerchief; all he does is nod.

About the Author

Caroline Walken has several titles in publication currently; Ell’s Double Down, Reggie’s No Limit, Nowhere on the Map and the latest, Behind the fan. The latest novel, Nowhere on the Map was accepted for the 2018 Reader’s Choice Award in the Romance category.  Additionally, her entry In Hiding was the winner of the Writer’s Assembled Short Story Competition in 2017 and is included in the release, Behind Closed Doors on Amazon.  There are plans to expand In Hiding into a full-length novel in the future.  This past June, Rejected Manuscripts published her short story, The Rule of Ten, on their site and it has remained in the top ten since publication.

The consensuses by readers are that her writing is gripping and the characters compelling.  The women love the female characters; appreciating their spunk as well as their flaws.  With a craving for action and adventure, her romance novels are not your typical girl meets boy romances.  Often intertwined with mystery and lawbreaking the stories keep the reader engaged.  Look for other novels by Caroline Walken as her imagination continues to run wild.

Synopsis

Executive, wife, and mother of an outgoing first-grader, Sydney Clayton crushes her day-to-day obligations at work but flounders in the cutthroat world of parental politics.

She manages to avoid the local drama until she’s faced with an ultimatum: join the Forest River PTA or risk her daughter becoming a social outcast. Sydney reluctantly becomes treasurer, and takes the recently vacated position of the president’s sidekick. If protecting the children’s freedom of speech, one best friend ban at a time, isn’t complicated enough, Sydney and her husband receive an unexpected offer for their house they don’t think they can refuse.

Embroiled in the deception and manipulation rife among the elementary school moms, Sydney struggles. Should she sell the home she worked so hard to build in a town where betrayal runs rampant? Or should she stay put to avoid the fallout from uprooting her child? As Sydney focuses on what is best for her daughter, and lets go of her judgments, she finds friendship can develop in very unexpected ways.

Warm, witty, and wise, Go On, Girl dramatizes the dilemmas of life in the suburbs and the bonds shared by women. Perfect for fans of Class Mom and I Don’t Know How She Does It.

Review

Another fun book by Hilary! She writes books that make me laugh and sympathize with the characters.

I had a love/hate relationship with Sydney. Many times she made me insane with her need to be around her child or available to her child all the time and how much she catered to her daughter. I grew up in a different time with a different mindset and believe that a child will be better off if they have to deal with certain issues on their own, even at age 6!

But as I delved further into the book, it was more about Sydney’s transformation from a helicopter parent with no friends, taking on a role she didn’t want (PTA Treasurer), to gaining several friends, and relaxing and reducing her rigidity (is that even a word?!) I appreciated her growth as a mother, wife, and friend. I like that she took no prisoners in certain situations and broke through some defenses for herself and her friends.

Craig, Sydney’s husband, may have a minor role in this book but he comes out strong and I really felt like I knew him. Several times he was roped into doing something he may not have normally done because of his profession as a lawyer, but we never see him complain. He even puts up with Sydney and her antics at various times.

I feel like this story could have continued, but where it ended what a good place and leaves it open for another book should there be more story to tell.

We give it 4 paws up!

Cozy mysteries: ‘Tain’t What You Write (It’s the Way That You Write It)

(With apologies to Jimmy Lunceford)

I write cozy mysteries, and I know that cozy is what my readers expect. Which is why I put this disclaimer into the description of my latest Professor Molly mystery, The Perfect Body.

The Perfect Body has

* no swearing

* no explicit sex

* no graphic violence

However, it does have

* descriptions of the new-mom experience, including diapers and breastfeeding

* conversation about a transgender character

* lurid descriptions of the inner workings of a public university

Why the warning? Because every reader has a different definition of what a cozy is. Personally, I think breastfeeding is fair game. But I didn’t want anyone to slam the book shut in disgust when, for example, we find that Molly has accidentally shot her poor husband in the eye (nursing moms, you know what I’m talking about).

Amanda Flower, writing for Publishers Weekly, tells us the essential ingredients of a cozy are:

An amateur sleuth, an unsuspecting victim, a quirky supporting cast, and trail of clues and red herrings.

Just as important is what a cozy doesn’t have. According to The Cozy Mystery List, a cozy contains

no graphic violence, no profanity, and no explicit sex.

Notice: No graphic violence. No explicit sex. It’s a matter of style rather than substance. It’s not what you’re telling the reader, it’s how you’re saying it.

While truly disturbing topics are off-limits (I can’t imagine a cozy about child soldiers, for example), I believe a cozy author can write about some fairly dreadful subjects, as long as the author keeps a light touch.

Consider the appalling behavior hinted at in this passage from one of Sarah Caudwell’s Hilary Tamar mysteries.

[Waiters] are an overworked and exploited profession, who have to spend much of their energies running to and fro carrying drinks and so on, so that the duration of the pleasure given is not always commensurate to the enthusiasm with which it is offered. If the coffee brought me by the pretty waiter had been cold by the time he left, I should have been willing, in the particular circumstances, to forgive him; but my forgiveness was not called for.

–Sarah Caudwell, Thus Was Adonis Murdered

When Caudwell’s characters aren’t indulging in unregretted liaisons, they’re stumbling into impromptu bacchanalia:

It was in many respects an admirable bathroom—marble walls, gold taps, and a bath the size of a paddling pool. It did not, however, afford the privacy which was my objective. The bath, you see, was full of people—I can’t say exactly how many, since they were rather tangled up together.

.― Sarah Caudwell, The Shortest Way to Hades

People are drowned, poisoned, and pushed off balconies. Straitlaced bankers are found chained to beds. A couple indulges in an afternoon frolic, unaware of the body stashed in the bedroom.

None of this spoils the mood. Through it all, we readers smile and occasionally burst out laughing.

In a tense psychological thriller, any setting can take be terrifying. A bake sale or a bridal shower can turn into a disturbing nightmare.

But in a cozy, any situation can be whimsical—regrettable dalliances, inconvenient deaths, and perhaps even the mysteries of new motherhood.

About the Author

Like Molly Barda, Frankie Bow teaches at a public university. Unlike her protagonist, she is blessed with delightful students, sane colleagues, a loving family, and a perfectly nice office chair. She believes if life isn’t fair, at least it can be entertaining.

In addition to writing murder mysteries, she publishes in scholarly journals under her real name. Her experience with academic publishing has taught her to take nothing personally.

Review

This is a very short story and gave me a good introduction to Michael Quinn. While we don’t know a lot about him, we do know he is a ex-Navy SEAL which means he has some skills that I wouldn’t want to come across in a dark alley.

What to say to not give away too much of the story since it is only 35 pages long. Michael meets up with a former professor at this dive hotel and takes Rebekah under his wing in a way – he is teaching her how to play pool. However, she is a math prodigy so she picks this up quite quickly. Unfortunately there are 4 locals that don’t take to Michael and want him to leave but without Rebekah. For some reason this sets off his radar which sets off a chain of events that bring those Navy Seal skills into play.

The book is action packed and kept me on the edge of my seat the entire way. I now want to check out some of the other books in this series.

We give this 5 paws up.

Cozy Mystery

Superior Shores Press (September 21, 2018)
Paperback: 232 pages

Synopsis

Sometimes the past reaches out to the present…

It’s been thirteen months since Calamity (Callie) Barnstable inherited a house in Marketville under the condition that she search for the person who murdered her mother thirty years earlier. She solves the mystery, but what next? Unemployment? Another nine-to-five job in Toronto?

Callie decides to set down roots in Marketville, take the skills and knowledge she acquired over the past year, and start her own business: Past & Present Investigations.

It’s not long before Callie and her new business partner, best friend Chantelle Marchand, get their first client: a woman who wants to find out everything she can about her grandmother, Anneliese Prei, and how she came to a “bad end” in 1956. It sounds like a perfect first assignment. Except for one thing: Anneliese’s past winds its way into Callie’s present, and not in a manner anyone—least of all Callie—could have predicted.

I don’t know about you, but I love libraries and book clubs!  I belong to a book club and use our public library especially now that I can check out eBooks!

Libraries & Book Clubs: A Winning Combination

Judy Penz Sheluk

Do you belong to a book club? I have to admit that, despite being an avid reader (I average a book a week), I’ve never belonged to one. As an author, however, one of my favorite things to do is meet readers—especially readers who like my books! Since the publication of my debut novel The Hanged Man’s Noose, I’ve had the good fortune to be a guest author at a few local book clubs. The idea is that if a club selects my book, on the day of their monthly meeting, I show up and answer questions. I don’t charge a fee (although I do love homemade cookies) because it’s nice to know that the group has selected and read my book. The hope, of course, is that they’ll want to read my other books, and I’m always grateful for reviews on Amazon and Goodreads. A couple of times these visits have led to paid speaking engagements.

It helps that my local library owns two book club “sets”—one set of The Hanged Man’s Noose, generously donated by a group in memory of their late founder, and the other, Skeletons in the Attic, donated by me because I love libraries and book clubs in equal measure. It also helps that I live in an area that appears to have a lot of active book clubs.

I’d like to tell you that my book club visits generate rave reviews from every member, and in most cases, that’s been the case (or at least the members were too polite to criticize the book in my presence). This past winter, however, while visiting a local Senior’s residence, it became clear that “amateur sleuth mysteries” did not meet up to the standards of previous Pulitzer Prize winning literature they’d been reading. One woman went on to tell me that there were “too many dead bodies,” before sniffing loudly and bringing the conversation around to an NHL hockey player, long dead (of natural causes, I assume, though I’m not entirely certain).

But for every dead hockey player, there have been far more wonderful experiences. This past Spring, a book club held a “Hanged Man’s Noose Pub Night” in celebration of reading The Hanged Man’s Noose, complete with Treasontinis, Full Noose Nachos, and shortbread. (You can find the recipes on the Food & Drink page of my website:  http://www.judypenzsheluk.com/recipes/).

Authors tend to be solitary creatures that make up stories in the comfort of our own preferred space. Getting out there with others can help fuel our imagination…or at the very least, reassure us that someone out there is reading what we wrote.

If you are part of a book club and would like to select one of my books, please contact me. At the very least, I can send your group bookmarks, and answer your questions by email after you’ve read the book—we may even be able to set up an online visit. For those book club members with long commutes, most of my titles are also available on Audible, iTunes, and Amazon.

Griffin Holloway is desperate: the Maverick Ranch has been in his family for generations, but lately, it’s a money pit. He’d sooner marry one of his horses than sell the ranch. Marriage, though, could be a solution. If he can woo a wealthy bride, he might save the ranch—just in time for Christmas. Jaxon O’Grady likes his solitude just fine, thank you very much. But when a car accident brings the unexpected to his door, he realizes just how much one person can need another. Crossroads is the perfect place for Jamie Johnson: avoiding nosy questions about why she’s single, she’s happy to keep to her lakeside home. So she’s baffled when she gets the strangest Christmas present of all, in the form of a Mr. Johnson, asleep on her sofa. Who is he, and why does everyone think he’s her husband?

In this uplifting novel, three unlikely couples discover just what Crossroads, Texas, can offer: romance, belonging, and plenty of Christmas spirit.

Praise

”Deeply poignant moments and artfully rendered characters create a rich story that transports readers to an idyllic place.” – Publishers Weekly

Three (soon to be) couples in three stories whose lives intersect in this small Texas town. Now by three stories I don’t mean there are three separate books, but three different plots. I know when I first started reading this book I was a little confused but I quickly fell into the flow and loved each and every character. They all have their issues, but love helps them overcome and become better people.

I am not sure which one of these was my favorite because they all grabbed a piece of my heart in different ways. Jax, who was a victim of a fire and is leaving a hermit life until he sees a car crash close to his home. Sunlan, she has lived her life being sheltered or controlled by her parents and finds a way to escape that and be her own person, but at what cost? Wyatt, he has a tough life in the military but through a misunderstanding by the local sheriff finds that maybe life isn’t meant to be lived alone. There are many other characters but this just highlights a few of them.

This book touched my heart, made me laugh, and even raised my protective instincts. It had everything I like to see in a book and enjoyed every moment in Crossroads.

Here are some of my favorite lines:

“Then you’d better come back soon. I’m not sure we speak the same language. Some guy in tight pants rushed down a while ago and asked me if I’d seen a sangria pillow. When I looked blank, he added real slow, ‘Sangria-colored pillow.’ I thought that was a drink, not a color. I told him I saw it riding off on a whiskey horse with a brandy mane toward a tequila sunset.”

“A pool would sure be nicer than the pond. Last time I went for a swim I came up for air, and a cow licked my ear so hard I didn’t get the snot out for a week.”

A fifth-generation Texan, New York Times and USA TODAY bestselling author Jodi Thomas chooses to set the majority of her novels in her home state, where her grandmother was born in a covered wagon. A former teacher, Thomas traces the beginning of her storytelling career to the days when her twin sisters were young and impressionable.

With a degree in family studies, Thomas is a marriage and family counselor by education, a background that enables her to write about family dynamics. Honored in 2002 as a Distinguished Alumni by Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Thomas enjoys interacting with students on the West Texas A&M University campus, where she currently serves as Writer in Residence.

Commenting on her contribution to the arts, Thomas said, “When I was teaching classes full-time, I thought I was making the world a better place. Now I think of a teacher or nurse or mother settling back and relaxing with one of my books. I want to take her away on an adventure that will entertain her. Maybe, in a small way, I’m still making the world a better place.”

When not working on a novel or inspiring students to pursue a writing career, Thomas enjoys traveling with her husband, renovating a historic home they bought in Amarillo and checking up on their two grown sons.

With the temperature dropping and leaves turning colors, it’s time to get ready for the cool days of fall. And what better way to prepare for the long nights ahead than to download a great whodunit novel with a dash (or heaping helping) of romance. Below we have crafted a quiz to help you find your next great read, but be warned, the titles all have mysteries that need to be solved and villains that must be brought to justice. So grab a thick blanket, a cup of hot cocoa, and answer the following questions to discover which romantic mystery you will want to “fall” into next.

  1. Where is your perfect romantic mystery set?

a) In “small town USA”. The everyday setting makes the violent crimes all the more shocking.
b) The rolling hills of Texas where there are lots of places to hide.
c) In a historic mansion near the choppy waters of Virginia, giving the story a Gothic feel.

  1. I want to read about a heroine who is …

a) …one hundred percent devoted to her family yet balanced enough to find success in her chosen career.
b) … intelligent and diligent, with a pressing drive to help others.
c) … currently in mourning after losing a loved one, but strong enough to take on any challenge.

  1. Is your heroine in peril?

a) She may face down a bad guy (or two), but thankfully her significant other is always there to guard her with his life.
b) In my fictional world nobody is safe. NOBODY!
c) The heroine doesn’t face physical danger, but her emotions take a severe beating as she learns terrible secrets from the past.

  1. When your heroine needs backup, who is she going to call?

a) Her BF who just happens to be a private investigator that solves crimes for a living.
b) A steely-eyed Texas Ranger who is known for delivering justice.
c) The town leader who is a successful businessman and pillar of the community.

  1. My ideal hero is….

a) …totally and completely devoted to supporting his woman.
b) …dependable and incredibly strong, however, he has suffered a loss and every once in a while his vulnerability shows through.
c) …steadfast, principled, and dedicated to his community.

  1. When sitting down to read a mystery, the crimes should be…

a) … studied in a clinical, professional manner.
b) … frequent and terrifying! I want something that keeps me up at night.
c) … in the past. I like trying to figure out who the bad guy is instead of focusing on violence.

  1. When the last page of the book is read, I want to feel…

a) … that second chances are not only real, but they can be incredibly joyous.
b) … a sense of deep satisfaction that justice has been found and order restored.
c) … tremendous hope and optimism for the future.

If you choose mostly As … then get ready to follow dedicated defense attorney Morgan Dane as she takes on her next case in Melinda Leigh’s What I’ve Done.

Morgan has been hired to defend Haley Powell after the young woman wakes up in a pool of the victim’s blood. And while Haley has no memory of the night and no alibi, Morgan is sure that there is more to this crime than a simple case of murder. With the help of her private investigator boyfriend Lance Kruger, Morgan inches towards answers all the while dodging threats meant to keep her silent.

***

If you choose mostly Bs … then the lightning fast twists and turns of Mary Burton’s romantic suspense novel Cut and Run is just right for you.

Medical examiner Faith McIntyre is used to investigating grizzly crime scenes, yet she is totally unprepared when faced with a barely-alive victim that looks EXACTLY like her. With no answers and nowhere else to turn, Faith teams up with her colleague-with-benefits Texas Ranger Mitchell Hayden. Together they discover decades old crime scenes, as well as new victims of a serial killer.

***

If you choose mostly Cs … then get ready to be transported to the windswept beaches where Mary Ellen Taylor sets her next release Winter Cottage.

When heroine Lucy Kincaid loses her mother, she receives an unexpected inheritance—a lonely old estate big enough to hold the secrets of Lucy’s family. Why did her mother never mention the mansion or the sea swept town of Cape Hudson? Who is Lucy’s father? And why is there a (literal) skeleton on Lucy’s property? With more questions than answers, Lucy turns to handsome local Hank Garrison only to find he has a motive for wanting the Winter Cottage all to himself…

Review

I didn’t realize this was #15 in a series! I’ve read a few of the previous books because characters started sounding familiar. That said, this book can definitely be read as a stand alone but if you think you want to read this series, then start at the beginning because a series is always best started with the first book so you can watch the personal lives grow.

This installment focuses on Jenna and Devin. They meet totally by chance but had spoken on the phone without knowing it when they met. Jenna’s son Reilly called Northpole One to reach Santa to add a Dad to his Christmas list. It was a fluke that a burner phone that Devin had was that number. I have to admire Devin for playing along and not crushing a young boy’s belief in Santa. He tried to reach Jenna to let her know her son was calling him, but Jenna would not answer. She had her own issues with a stalker and thought it was that person. Thankfully she finally answered and they got that squared away. I think it was at that moment that Devin fell in love with someone he didn’t even know.

Jenna ends up in Eternity Springs because it is touted as a place to heal broken hearts. Plus she feels safe there when the stalker forces her to go off the grid to escape him/her. She just didn’t realize that she would find her new home and potentially family there. Turns out it was a great decision for her. Plus since Jenna is a OB/GYN she was able to help all the women that seemed to have gotten pregnant during a blizzard in March. One of my favorite lines near the end – “After that, it was like dominoes. All six women…every last one of them…went into labor.”

Another favorite line between Jenna and Devin – Jenna “Who starts a fight at a cakewalk? You smashed Maggie’s cake!” Devin – “That was unfortunate. But since I as the winner, the only person I hurt was myself.” (there was more but I just highlighted my favorite parts)

There are some tense moments for Jenna when the stalker initiates some pranks and (apparently) what they call swatting (prank calls to emergency numbers). I will say that the whole situation with this stalker fell a little flat. I realize it wasn’t the main focus of the book, but once they discovered who it was it just ended and there wasn’t any more mention of this person or what happened to them or if Jenna would need to testify against this person.

Overall this is a very enjoyable book and I can just imagine that one of the upcoming books will be about Boone. This book just hints that there is more to him than meets the eye.

We give it 4 paws up!
