When I was young and first read Stephen King. I was amazed at the storytelling and the fear the words could draw up in me.

  2. Penny Olson

I was surprised that a romance could be soooo good. It was Outlander.

  3. Ann S

No, I usually stick with the same genres.

  4. Ann S

I usually stick to the same genres, so no, I can’t say I’ve been surprised.

  5. gala

I have been surprised reading a new genre. That’s how I fall in love with YA.

  6. JAMIE MARTIN

Surprised to love YA as an adult!

  7. Christopher S

I like to dip into genres I’m not familiar with. So I tried an “Oprah book club’ book (The Corrections) and hoped for the best. While not my most fav read ever, I appreciated the story, the characters and letting it resonate with me after completing the book.

  8. Sheila S.

I don’t stray far from my usual genres. I have read some non-fiction books that
    surprisingly were very good.

  9. Jayne Townsley

Not really because I’ve never been a genre snob and was open to reading just about anything my whole life.

  10. Jana Leah

I enjoy most genres & have not necessarily been surprised by a specific genre, but by individual books. There is not a particular book that comes to mind at the moment.

  11. Beverly Gordon

very surprised I didn’t really like mc books or ya books and Gave them both a shot and now im hooked on both

  12. Debbi Wellenstein

I don’t often read scifi. I was very impressed by Station Eleven; it has become one of my favorite books.

  13. Abigail Gibson

I am not a fan of horror until I read Stephen King’s Misery. Awesome!

  14. BookLady

I have been surprised at how interesting some YA books can be.

  15. Sarah L

  16. Ashley @ Oh Hey Books

So normally I read nothing but YA and through my mom I started reading Debbie Macomber [romance] I was actually surprised to find that I quickly became a fanatic.

Check out this fun post from Ashley @ Oh Hey! Books.

  17. Lu Worley

No, because I like most all genres.
I I find all genres have good and not good books.

  18. Jessica cashen

I was surprised by how much I love YA books

  19. Judy Cox

I was recently suprised when I read my first cozy mystery, mainly because I thought it would mostly be kind of silly, but it was a good mystery!!!

  20. Amanda

I was surprised that I liked The Girl with all the Gifts as much as I did since I don’t usually like zombie stories. The book’s world and character development was excellent.

  21. Stephanie

As long as there’s a little bit of drama or suprising events then I enjoy them.

  22. Gwendolyn Jordan

    No, never been surprised

  23. Ellen Levickis

When I picked up a romance after years away from reading them I was furious that I wasted time an d money on a book more erotic than the blurb or the cover indicated to me and I found that to be true with others.

  24. Shannon Capelle

Yes I read YA books and was surprised that I really enjoyed them and they were really good!

  25. Edye

I was impressed with the City Of Bones series!

  26. Danielle Hammelef

Yes, I was recently surprised by an adult mystery/thriller that I was actually “afraid” to read because of the potential content. But it turned out to be an amazing and fun book with so many twists!!!

  27. Dianna

Yes, I have been surprised at reading what I thought was paranormal, but it ended up being a horror story.

  28. John Smith

“Have you ever been surprised reading a new to you genre? What made the book good or bad?” I’ve read a couple books that count as romances in the past year, and they were quite good! (But one of them, despite being otherwise a fun and quite-correct period piece had a raunchy sex scene–blecchy-poo!)

  29. Andrea Carroll

I was surprised by the My Lady Jane – I wasn’t sure making light of Lady Jane Grey would be successful. Absolutely loved the book and laughed all the way through it.

  30. Burma Turner

I read Dark Matter by Blake Crouch and I was surprised by how much I liked it. I rarely read sci-fi.
